Donate $8.60 in honor of Barack Obama's Grandmother, Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham, Age 86 (born October 26, 1922)
** UPDATES **4:46 PM EST 11/3/2008: CNN Breaking News: "Sen. Barack Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died after a battle with cancer, his campaign office says." Our thoughts and prayers go to Sen. Obama and his family.
A Note of Gratitude: Over $8,000 has been raised through this page. At a very sad time -- breaking reports have just confirmed Sen. Obama's grandmother has died -- I want to express gratitude to everyone who has donated to the Obama campaign through this donation page, every person who wrote about it online (some people made MANY posts online on behalf of this page -- I am VERY grateful), every person who mentioned it to their friends, every person who sent a kind email to me.
We turned one of countless slurs from the McCain campaign into another positive for Barack Obama and into honor and deep appreciation for his grandmother, Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham. Donations ranged from many people who kindly answered the request for $8.60 in honor of Madelyn Lee's 86th birthday, to hundreds of dollars. There are a lot of kind hearted people out there, that's for sure.
With one day before the election please do something today or on Election Day to help the Obama-Biden campaign. Visit the http://www.barackobama.com home page. Make some calls (it's easy, it really is). Connect with the Obama group active in your state right away. Thank you!
About the Creation of this Donation Page (Here is the original message of this webpage):
I know everyone's thoughts and prayers are going out to Sen. Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham, who has just reached her age 86th birthday (born October 26, 1922). Sen. Obama as you know cancelled some events so he could travel quickly to his grandmother who is gravely ill. Sunday, October 26, marked Madelyn Lee's 86th birthday. Sadly, she is not expected to live to see Inauguration Day...
On Thursday Oct 23, I saw online the latest smear from the Republican camp: In an apparent effort to deflect criticism over the RNC spending $150,000 for clothes for Gov. Sarah Palin, GOP strategist Brad Blakeman criticized Obama on MSNBC for "taking a 767 campaign plane to go visit Grandma." You can see the entire exchange here:
It was encouraging to see MSNBC anchor David Schuster laugh out loud at Blakeman, but Blakeman's comments went beyond laughable and crossed a line. He seemingly made light of the fact that Obama's grandmother is seriously ill. His remarks and the tenor of his remarks ("go visit Grandma") are unacceptable.
With Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham's 86th birthday in mind, I would like to ask everyone to donate $8.60, or any multiple of $8.60, to the Obama-Biden campaign, right now!
If you have already donated money to the campaign, as my family has, I hope you will consider just $8.60 more to send a little message to Mr. Blakeman, and, far more importantly, make a donation specifically in honor of Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham.
Please Spread the Word! I want to thank everyone who has helped spread the word on this donation page, including so many Huffington Post members who have posted, bumped and re-bumped the link to this page (THANK YOU HUFFPO MEMBERS!!), as well as many bloggers! Thank you all!
