John Tanner must go

Send a letter to the Department of Justice demanding that John Tanner be removed as the official responsible for protecting the voting rights of all Americans.

Last week, Barack Obama sent a letter to Acting Attorney General Peter D. Keisler demanding that John Tanner be removed from his position as the top ranking voting rights official at the Justice Department.

As voting rights chief, Tanner overruled the recommendations of Justice Department lawyers to support a controversial photo ID requirement in Georgia despite numerous studies that show that photo ID requirements have a discriminatory impact on African American and other minority voters.

Recently, he was caught on video claiming that such requirements do not disenfranchise minority voters because, “Our society is such that minorities don’t become elderly the way white people do; they die first.”

He went on to argue that these requirements actually benefit minorities because, “Anything that disproportionately impacts the elderly has the opposite impact on minorities.”

John Tanner has an obvious disregard for the voting rights of minorities and should not be in charge of protecting them.

Send a message to the Acting Attorney General and tell him to replace Tanner immediately. Click the “Participate” button to get started.
