“Victory alone is not the change we seek-it is only the chance for us to make that change.”
This summer, Organizing for America is looking for students, recent graduates, and anyone else who believes in the power of community organizing, to help lead our grassroots movement. Summer Organizers will work directly with communities and volunteer leaders to recruit, train and mobilize volunteers to keep making change happen in 2010.
By participating in our Summer Organizers program, you will join a new generation of leadership that is changing our country. You will work as a real community organizer— the profession that launched President Obama’s public service career.
So many of you stepped up and organized your campuses and communities during President Obama’s presidential campaign. You knocked on doors, made phone calls, registered voters, and trained your peers. You made it happen.
And over the last 14 months, you’ve redoubled your efforts to make the change we fought for on the campaign a legislative reality. Thanks to your efforts, health insurance reform and student loan reform are now the law of the land. We’ve also been able to bring real reforms to the credit card industry, and played an instrumental role in the successful push to make Sonia Sotomayor a Supreme Court Justice
But, make no mistake, we are just getting started. Change in Washington does not come easy. We will not achieve affordable education, financial regulatory reform, or create a clean energy economy unless we all work for it. It is up to all of us to fight back against special interests and make sure that our voice is heard. And there are critically important midterm elections that are only months away.
We need you this summer.
There’s much to be done. Our success, in both the 2008 election and in the time since, has always been possible only because so many people, many of whom had never been involved in politics or even voted before, stepped up and made their voice heard. We need to continue to be the vehicle that brings people into the political process, and empowers them to speak up in their communities and in their voting booths for the change our country needs.
Summer Organizers will be trained on the principles, strategies and tactics of effective grassroots organizing. Summer Organizers will be asked to commit to 40 hours per week and will:
