Thank You, Barack, For "A More Perfect Union," and for WRITING IT YOURSELF!

Barack just before delivering his speech.

Barack Obama gave a speech on the morning of March 13, 2008, that is already being called the greatest speech on race since Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. Centuries from now, historians will look at Barack's "A More Perfect Union" speech as the gold standard in the study of race relations in 21st century America.

It made us smile. It made us cry. It made us think. It made us hope.

It was 4,911 words of pure beauty. It was 37 minutes of the truest patriotism in the world: Patriotism that accepts the flaws of the country that one loves, that embraces its successes, and that offers hope and faith for the future.

Those 4,911 words were written by Barack Obama. Not a speech writer.

The last time a major speech was written without the aid of a speechwriter by a president or presidential candidate was Nixon's "Great Silent Majority" speech delivered on October 13, 1969. An evil speech, but an effective speech- and a speech made over 39 years ago. That's the last time we had a candidate wise enough to sit quietly with his thoughts and organize them into a speech, and brave enough to deliver his own speech before the nation.

If that's not enough to convince you that Barack Obama stands head and shoulders above the crowd, consider another politician from Illinois who wrote his own speeches: Abraham Lincoln.

Let's thank Barack Obama for his courage and for a speech that will be remembered and echoed in America for thousands of years. Let's raise $4,911.00. One dollar for each word from Barack's heart.
