Let's keep going till we win this thing!

After too many years complaining about the direction this country has been going, it's time to step up and ensure that Obama and Biden lead the United States in a new direction.

As a New Yorker, it's easy to become complacent, when it seems like almost everyone you know feels the same way you do.  Watching the McCain / Palin campaign over this past month has been a frightening experience, as we see how the once nominally "maverick" McCain has caved in to the pressures of the religious right to support an agenda which is is in opposition to almost everything I believe in, as well as to many of his own previously stated positions.

After being inspired by all the optimism and joyous energy in Denver at the nomination speech, I vowed to start doing more to support the campaign.  For my 41st birthday, I challenged each of my friends to make a small donation as a birthday gift, with the goal of bringing everyone together to raise $41,000 to enable Obama campaign can do what it needs to make sure we win this election, and win back the country from the extremists on the right who have done so much damage in the past 8 years.

Miraculously, we not only reached the goal, but have now exceeded $43,000 and donations keep coming!  We have already seen in Michigan that Obama's resources have enabled him to drive McCain's campaign from the state to compete in places the Republicans might otherwise have taken for granted. It's important that as the polls start turning more clearly in Obama's direction that we continue to push hard in these next 30 days.

In the past few weeks, I have been inspired by friends who have copied these kinds of fundraising campaigns or organizing benefits. Others who have been getting on the phone calling voters in battleground states.  Still others who have been going door to door registering voters, and rallying support in parts of the country where a few hundred votes could actually change the course of history.

Barack Obama and I are committed to changing the political process by building a campaign founded on a broad base of support from ordinary Americans. This campaign is about putting the people's interests ahead of the special interests, but to do that, Barack needs help from people like you and me.

I've set my own personal fundraising goal for the campaign, which you can see in the thermometer to the right.
