New York Presidential Nominating Convention (Meeting)
The candidates or representatives from all of the major presidential campaigns will be present, so come and experience this once-in-lifetime opportunity to express your opinions on national issues DIRECTLY to the future president.
Here is a more detailed description of the event:
Balloons, banners, fiery speeches and heated debates will fill convention halls around the nation as high school students examine the candidates for president at the Junior State of America's Presidential Nominating Conventions. The Junior State has conducted student-run Presidential Nominating Conventions for over thirty years. In 2008, conventions will be held in Los Angeles, Chicago, Berkeley, Houston, Seattle, New York City, Cleveland, and many other cities.
Student-run campaigns will capture the thrill and excitement of the presidential elections during the heart of the primary season. The Presidential Nominating Conventions will give students the chance to evaluate the candidates on their merits, qualifications, and positions on the issues. The conventions will be a unique opportunity to look beyond the sound bites and TV ads to determine the best candidate to lead the country. Dramatic convention-style roll call elections will be held to select the students' choice for the Democratic and Republican nominees. A suspenseful run-off election between the two nominees will end these exciting educational conventions.
Throughout the convention, controversial issues will be debated as delegates adopt a student platform for the country. As leaders of the next generation, students will have the opportunity to express their opinion on the key economic, foreign policy, and social issues that will shape this country's future.
In addition to serving as delegates, students may choose to become more actively involved by accepting convention leadership positions. For each presidential candidate, a campaign committee of students will be selected for the complex task of carrying out a successful convention campaign.
The PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATING CONVENTION 2008 is a unique opportunity for students to actively participate in the 2008 race for the Presidency. Each convention will be student-run with students presiding over the convention, campaigning for the candidate of their choice, and debating the issues of this exciting presidential election.
Nominating Candidates Convention-Style -- the two main sessions of the convention will imitate the Republican Party and Democratic Party Conventions. In the morning, the focus will be on the Democrats as Joe Biden, Hilary Clinton, Christopher Dodd, John Edwards, Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich, Barack Obama, and Bill Richardson battle for the party nomination. In the afternoon, the Republicans will take center stage as many candidates seek the opportunity to represent their party. Whose vision best reflects the ideals embodied by Ronald Reagan: Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Alan Keyes, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo, or Fred Thompson? The hoopla and tension will build from nominating speeches through several ballots until the strongest candidates emerge victorious.
At the end of the day, a stand up, straw poll vote will be taken between the Republican and Democratic nominees. This convention will give students the chance to express their opinions and campaign for their favorite.
