The Campaign for Change Watch Party at Independence Mall (Convention Watch Party)
On Thursday, August 28th, American history will be made when Barack Obama formally receives the Democratic nomination for President. It will be one of the biggest political and historical moments of this generation. Millions of people around the world will be watching, as Senator Barack Obama becomes the first African American to receive the Presidential nomination of a major political party. The fact that this historic event takes place on the 45th anniversary to the day of Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech adds to the excitement of what will truly be the grandest night of the campaign. Nationwide there will be hundreds of venues and supporters hosting “Watch Parties” to bring together thousands of Obama supporters who want to witness and celebrate this historic moment. In Philadelphia, Independence Mall will be the site of a free public Watch Party. There will be a huge 20’ x 30’ screen on the Mall carrying a live feed from the Democratic National Convention. The Watch Party starts at 8pm and will end at the conclusion of Senator Obama’s historic acceptance speech. His “Audacity of Hope” speech at the Democratic convention four years ago electrified the country and this year’s speech as a Presidential candidate promises to be even better. Independence Mall is located in downtown Philadelphia on Market Street between 5th and 6th. This area is referred to as “America’s Most Historic Square Mile” which makes it the ideal location for Obama supporters to gather and be part of this historic moment. Everyone is welcome and all attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. Those who arrive between 5pm and 7pm can enjoy the Music on the Mall Concert which features classic tunes performed live by local bands. This free summer concert series is presented by the Independence Visitor Center.
