March Against Hate (Community Service)
Hi all - I'd love to see folks at this event. There will hopefully be a large number of people in the community, and we should take the opportunity to (1) stand against hate in our community and (2) register voters (I'll bring voter reg. materials). I hope you come and wear Obama gear. In response to recent hate crimes in Astoria, Astorians United Against Hate Crimes will be meeting at Athens Park (located at 30th Avenue and 30th Street in Astoria - near the 30th Avenue stop of the N Train) at 1:00 on Sunday, September 7. The rally will be lead by Father Braxton, a priest who runs Carmen's Place. Carmen's Place is a shelter for LBGTQ youths. Father Braxton was assaulted by local youths after Father Braxton tried to intervene when the youths were assaulting gay teens living at Carmen's Place. After the rally, we will peacefully march to Carmen's Place (31-14 Steinway Street). In addition to Father Braxton, other speakers at the rally include Congressman Anthony Weiner, Councilman Peter Vallone, Tom Shanahan from the NY State Division of Human Rights on behalf of the Governor, Erica Braudy from the NYCLU and Amardeep Singh from the Sikh Coalition, and myself. Karla and Val Turner will provide musical entertainment. Astoria's greatest strength is its diversity. That greatness is lessened when people are singled out and attacked because of their identity. That greatness is strengthened when the entire community stands up with one voice and says that hatred will not be tolerated. Please join us and stand up for what makes Astoria great.
