Collect Petitions for Fair Districts Florida in Plantation (Community Service)
Every ten years, after the census, the boundaries of our congressional, state house and state senate districts are redrawn. But the process has been hijacked by self-interested politicians. Our constitution contains no standards to prevent politicians from putting partisan politics ahead of Florida voters.
The bipartisan state committee FairDistrictsFlorida.org is proposing to establish clear fairness standards that will end self-interested gerrymandering. They have drafted two amendments to the Florida Constitution which they plan to put on the 2010 ballot through the citizen initiative process. These amendments would establish fairness standards for use in creating legislative and congressional district boundaries. While protecting minority voting rights, the standards would prohibit drawing district lines to favor or disfavor any incumbent or political party. Districts would have to be compact and utilize existing political and geographical boundaries.
The Plantation Democratic Club will be soliciting signatures for FairDistricts petitions at the West Regional Courthouse every weekday from 11:45AM until 1:15PM. Please come out and support this worthy effort and help bring real change to Florida!
