Rhode Island Voting Rules

Deadline to Register:
31 days prior to Election Day (October 4). A person may also register to vote on Election Day, however, they may cast a vote for President and Vice President only.

Voter Eligibility:
You may register to vote if you are a citizen of the United States, a resident of the Rhode Island city or town where you wish to vote, and at least eighteen years old on or before the next election. You may not register to vote if you are legally declared mentally incapable by a court or a convicted felon still serving a sentence. Once a sentence is fully served, the right to vote is restored by either notifying your local board of canvassers in writing or by submitting a new registration form.

Identification Requirements:
Valid RI driver's license or RI ID, current utility bill, current bank statement, current government check, current paycheck, another current government document.

Where to Turn in Your Registration:
Voter registration applications should be turned in to the Local board of canvassers, which can be found here.

How to Register Others:
Anyone can register others and mail/turn in their forms on their behalf. The only parameter is the registration deadline of October 4.

Absentee Voting:
Excuses: Required. Absent from the state, incapacitated due to illness or physical disability, confined to a hospital, religious reasons, awaiting a trial, serving in the military or spouse of someone who is, work for the Elections Board or a poll worker.
