Mississippi Voting Rules

Deadline to Register:
30 days prior to the election (Oct 5, 2008).

Voter Eligibility:
In order to register to vote in Mississippi, individuals must: be a US citizen and a citizen of the state and county for at least 30 days prior to the election; never have committed a felony or if so, have had their rights restored as required by law; not have been declared mentally incompetent by a court; be at least 18 years of age by Election Day.

Identification Requirements:
If the individual does not mail in a copy of ID with the registration, they will be asked to provide ID at the polls on Election Day. Accepted ID includes copy of current valid photo id, or copy of current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows name and address of voter.

Where to Turn in Your Registration:
Voter registration forms should be mailed to the voter’s local County Voter Registrars Office. A list of County Voter Registrars Offices can be found here.

How to Register Others:
There are no state-specific regulations involved in registering voters.

Absentee Voting:
Absentee voting is available. Excuses are required.

Excuses: In order to vote absentee, registered voters must be at least one of the following:
• A disabled war veteran who is a patient in any hospital and a citizen of Mississippi
• A citizen of Mississippi temporarily residing outside the territorial limits of the United States and the District of Columbia
• An employee engaged in interstate transportation
• A student, teacher or administrator
• An employee engaged in offshore employment, or as an employee on a vessel or other watercraft
• An employee, businessperson, professional, tradesman or worker required to be over 50 miles away from the county of residence on election day due to employment
• A person with a temporary or permanent physical disability
• 65 years of age or older
• A parent, spouse or dependent of a person with a temporary or permanent disability hospitalized more than 50 miles from home county and with such person Election Day
• A member of a congressional delegation

Application Process:
Absentee ballots can be requested from the voter’s local Country Registrars Office. A list of County Voter Registrars Offices can be found here.

Early Vote:
No early voting is available.
