Register & Vote on Election Day

Here’s what you need to bring with you:

Option #1:

A MN driver’s license, MN state ID card, or tribal ID with your photo, name, current address and signature, or a notice of late registration from your county auditor or city clerk.

Option #2:

A photo ID plus a current utility bill in your name.

Photo IDs:
• MN driver’s license or ID card (with old address-not expired)
• Tribal ID without an address
• U.S. passport
• U.S. military ID
• MN student ID

Utility bills (due within 30 days of election):
• Gas, Electric, Solid waste, Water, Sewer
• Phone (any kind: land line, cell, VOIP)
• TV (cable, satellite)
• Internet
• Rent statement with itemized utilities
• Current student fee statement

Option #3:

If you don’t have any of these things, that’s ok!  You just need a voucher -- someone registered to vote in your precinct who can swear that you live there

Minnesota Voting Rules

Voter Eligibility:
In order to register to vote in Minnesota, individuals must: be at least 18 years of age on Election Day; be a citizen of the United States; have resided in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding Election Day; maintain residence at the address given on the registration form; not be under court-ordered guardianship in which the court order revokes the right to vote; have not been found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote; have the right to vote because, if have been convicted of a felony, felony sentence has expired (been completed) or have been discharged from sentence.

Where to Vote as a Student
As a college student, you may have a choice as to where you register to vote and cast your ballot.

  • College students living at home
    You may register to vote at your home address and vote at your neighborhood polling location.
  • College students living on or off campus
    You may register and vote at either a parent’s home address or your school address, depending on which you consider your residence. However, you may only register and vote at one location in any election.

Absentee Voting:

Voting absentee is easy. You can vote by absentee ballot if you are: away from home on Election Day, ill or disabled, an election judge serving in another precinct, unable to go to the polling place due to a religious holiday or beliefs

  • Vote absentee: in person from Oct. 4 through Nov. 3 at your county auditor’s office during normal office hours; or from 10 am to 3 pm the Saturday before the election or until 5 pm the Monday before the election.
  • Call your county auditor or city clerk or visit the Secretary of State website http://www.sos.state.mn.us/home/index.asp?page=211 for the details.
  • If you are in the military or outside the US, vote based on where you last lived in Minnesota. You or your parent, spouse, brother, sister, or adult child can apply for you. Be sure to apply early!
  • You only need ID to vote if you have not registered before arriving at the polling precinct. You may register to vote at your polling place on Election Day. ID needed to register to vote at the polling precinct must consist of a combination of one approved photo ID and one approved utility bill. Photo ID examples include: Minnesota driver's license with current name (licenses from out-of-state are not acceptable), Minnesota state ID. (An ID from another state is not acceptable), U.S. Military ID, U. S. passport, or Minnesota Tribal ID. Utility bill examples include: electric bill, gas bill, water bill, sewer bill, solid waste bill, cable television bill, or telephone or cell bill. Please note that the utility bill must have your name, current address, and be due within 30 days of the election. If you do not have this combination of forms of identification, you can go with someone else from your precinct who can vouch for you

Absentee Application Process:
Applications can be found here. Applications should be turned in to the voter’s local County Courthouse by fax or mail. A list of local County Courthouses can be found here.
