Where Barack Stands on the Issues

Latino Blueprint for Change

Education

Barack Obama believes that our education system must be reformed to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population. Obama would work to keep young people fromdropping out of school and hold schools accountable for teaching English-language learners. Obama is a cosponsor of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which allow undocumented students to pay lower in-state tuition rates.

Immigration

Obama played a leading role in crafting comprehensive immigration reform. He believes our broken immigration system can only be fixed by putting politics aside and offering a solution that secures our border, enforces our laws and reaffirms our heritage as a nation of immigrants.

Health Care

There are nearly 14 million uninsured Latinos. Obama is committed to signing legislation by the end of his first term in office that ensures all Americans have high quality, affordable health care coverage. His plan will expand access to affordable health insurance, fight health disparities, get more Latinos to enter the medical profession, and increase the cultural competence of health care workers.

Economic Opportunity

Obama will raise the minimum wage, support low-income families, and protect Social Security and home ownership for Latinos. Obama supports funding for job training programs and providing capital to minority-owned businesses. Obama will work to provide immigrants more access to banking services.

Foreign Policy

Obama will strengthen our relationship with the more than 500 million people who live in Latin America. Obama opposed the Iraq war from the beginning and has introduced legislation that would begin a phased withdrawal with a goal of removing all of our combat troops by March 2008. His plan focuses on reaching a political solution in Iraq, protecting our interests in the region, and bringing this war to a responsible end.
