Indiana Voting Rules

Deadline to Register:
Voter registration forms must be postmarked by October 6th.

Voter Eligibility:
In order to vote in Indiana, individuals must: be a citizen of the United States; be at least 18 years of age on Election Day; have lived in their precinct for at least 30 days before the election (except for certain military voters); not currently be imprisoned after being convicted of a crime.

Identification Requirements:
Individuals are required to provide their Indiana driver’s license number in the “Voter’s Identification Number” blank on the voter registration form. If they do not have an Indiana driver’s license, the last four digits of their social security number should be provided.

Where to Turn in Your Registration:
Voter registration forms should be mailed or hand delivered to the voter’s local Voter Registration Office. A list of Voter Registration Offices can be found attached to the voter registration form here. Original signatures are required on all registration forms and therefore faxed forms will not be accepted.

How to Register Others:
There are no restrictions involved in registering others to vote.

Absentee Voting:
Absentee voting is available. Excuses are required.
Excuses: In order to vote absentee by mail, a registered voter must meet at least one of the following requirements: have a specific, reasonable expectation that you will be absent from the county on Election Day during the entire 12 hours that the polls are open (6 am until 6 pm); have a disability; be at least 65 years of age; will have official election duties outside of your voting precinct; be scheduled to work at their regular place of employment during the entire 12 hours that the polls are open; be confined due to illness or injury or be caring for an individual confined due to illness or injury during the entire 12 hours that the polls are open; be prevented from voting because of a religious discipline or religious holiday during the entire 12 hours that the polls are open; be a participant in the state's address confidentiality program.
Application Process: Applications for absentee ballots can be found here. Applications should be returned to the voter’s local County Office. A list of County Offices can be found attached to the absentee ballot application at the above link.
Dates: Applications to vote absentee by mail must be returned to the voter’s local County Office at least 8 days prior to the election (Oct 27, 2008). Applications must also be turned in within 7 days from the completion of the form. Absentee ballots must be returned to the voter’s local County Office no later than noon on Election Day.

Early Vote:
Any registered voter can vote absentee in-person. No excuses are necessary.
Dates: Absentee in-person voting is available at your local county election board office beginning 29 days prior to the election (Oct 6, 2008).
