Connecticut Voting Rules

Deadline to Register:
Forms must be hand delivered or postmarked 14 days prior to the election (Oct 21, 2008). Or individuals may register in person at their local Registrar of Voters 7 days prior to the election (Oct 28, 2008).

Voter Eligibility:
In order to register to vote in Connecticut, an individual must: be a United States citizen; be a resident of a Connecticut town; be at least 18 years old by Election Day; have completed confinement and parole if previously convicted of a felony and have had your voting rights restored by a Registrar.

Identification Requirements:
In order to avoid providing ID at the polls if individual is registering for the first time in Connecticut, they may provide their driver’s license number or the last four digits of their social security number along with their voter registration form.

Where to Turn in Your Registration:
Voter registration forms should be returned to the voter’s local Registrar of Voters. A list of Registrars of Voters can be found here.

How to Register Others:
There are no restrictions in place for registering voters. The Secretary of State asks that voter registration forms be turned in to the Registrar of Voters in a timely manner.

Absentee Voting:
Absentee voting is available. Excuses are required.
Excuses: A registered voter may vote absentee if unable to vote in person due to any of the following: illness or physical disability; absence from town during all election hours; religious beliefs forbidding secular activity on Election Day; service as an election official at a polling place other than their own; or service in the military.
Application Process: Applications for absentee ballots can be found here.The application is to be returned to the voter’s local Town Clerk. Voters may fax this application to the Town Clerk but must also mail this completed application with their original signature to the Town Clerk, either separately or with their absentee ballot. If the application with their original signature is not received by the close of the polls on the day of the election, the absentee ballot will not be counted. Dates: Absentee ballots are available beginning 31 days prior to the election (Oct 4, 2008). Ballots must be received by the Town Clerk no later than 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Early Vote:
No early voting is available.
