Arizona Voting Rules

Voter Registration Form:
Forms can be found here.

Deadline to Register:
29 days prior to the election (Oct 6, 2008).

Voter Eligibility:
In order to register to vote in Arizona, an individual must: be a US citizen; be a resident of Arizona; be at least 18 years of ago by Election Day; not be a convicted felon (unless civil rights have been restored); and not have been adjudicated an incompetent person.

Identification Requirements:
Completed voter registration forms must contain the individual’s Arizona driver’s license or non-operating identification license number. If they do not have either of these licenses, they must include the last four digits of their social security number. If they do not have a driver license or non-operating identification license or a social security number, a unique identifying number will be assigned by the Secretary of State. A complete voter registration form must also contain proof of citizenship or the form will be rejected. If the individual has an Arizona driver license or non-operating identification license issued after October 1, 1996, this will serve as proof of citizenship. If not, they must enclose proof of citizenship with the form. The back of the form contains a list of acceptable documents to establish citizenship and instructions on how to include copies of the documents with the voter registration form.

Where to Turn in Your Registration:
Voter registration forms should be mailed or hand-delivered to the voter’s local County Recorder’s Office. A list of County Record’s Offices can be found at the bottom of the voter registration form.

How to Register Others:
All voter registration forms must be turned in to the voter’s local County Recorders Office no longer than 5 days after their completion. There are no other regulations to registering voters.

Absentee Voting:
Any registered voter may vote by mail-in ballot. No excuses are necessary.

Application Process:
No applications are available online. Voters should write, call, or email their County Recording Office to request an early ballot. If a verbal request is made, the voter must provide their birthplace and date of birth. Some recorders will allow a voter to request an early ballot through their Internet site.

Dates: Requests for mail-in ballots must be requested no later than eleven days prior to the election (Oct. 24, 2008). Mail-in ballots must be turned in to the voter’s local County Recorders Office or any polling location by 7pm Election Day.

Early Vote:
Early voting is available. No excuses are necessary. Early voting takes place at the local County Recorder’s Offices starting 33 days prior to the election (Oct 2, 2008) and ending at 5pm on the Friday before the election (Oct 31, 2008).
