Alabama Voting Rules
Voter Registration Form:

Deadline to Register:
10 days prior to the election (Oct 25, 2008).
Voter Eligibility:
In order to vote in Alabama, individuals must: be a US citizen; reside in Alabama; be at least 18 years of age prior to Election Day; have not been convicted of a felony (unless your voting rights have been restored); have not been legally declared "mentally incompetent" by a court.
Identification Requirements:
If not previously supplied, voters will be required to present identification when they vote absentee or at their polling place Individuals may send with their absentee application a copy of a current and valid photo identification, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows their name and address.
Where to Turn in Your Registration:
Voter registration forms should be returned to the individual’s local Board of Registrars. A list of local Boards of Registrars can be found at the Secretary of State's Office.
How to Register Others:
There are no state-specific restrictions on registering voters.
Absentee Voting:
Absentee voting is available. Excuses are required.
Excuses: A registered voter may vote absentee if they meet at least one of the following: Will be absent from the county on Election Day; are ill or have a physical disability that prevents a trip to the polling place; are a registered Alabama voter living outside the county, such as a member of the armed forces, a voter employed outside of the United States, a college student, or a spouse or child of such a person; are an appointed election officer or poll watcher at a polling place other than his/her regular polling place; or works a required shift, 10 hours or more, that coincides with polling hours.
Begin the Application Process
Applications to vote absentee should be sent to the voter’s local County Circuit Court. Please address applications to Absentee Election Manger in care of the local County Circuit Court. A list of local County Circuit Courts can be found at this website.
Dates: An absentee ballot returned by mail must be postmarked no later than the day before the election (Nov 3, 2008). If hand-delivered, the ballot must be in the office of the Absentee Election Manager by 5 p.m. on the day before the election (Nov 3, 2008).
Business/Medical Emergency applications can be made after the absentee deadline but no later than 5 PM on the day before the election (Nov 3, 2008) if the voter: is required by an employer under unforeseen circumstances to be out of the county on Election Day for an emergency business trip; or has a medical emergency requiring treatment from a licensed physician. Early Vote:
No early voting is available.
