Alaska Voting Rules

Deadline to Register:
30 days before Election Day (October 5, 2008).

Voter Eligibility:
In order to register to vote in Alaska, individuals must: be a US citizen; be a resident of Alaska; be at least 18 years old or will be within 90 days of completing their application. Note: If an individual has been convicted of a felony, they may still be eligible to register to vote if they have been unconditionally discharged. They should provide a copy of their discharge papers with their registration application.

Identification Requirements:
Individuals who initially register to vote by mail must include information that will verify their identity. If they have not previously registered to vote in Alaska and are submitting their registration application by mail, they must provide a copy of ONE of the following: driver’s license, state identification card, birth certificate, passport, or hunting and fishing license. In addition, individuals need to provide their birth day and last four digits of their social security number on their voter registration form. If identity can not be verified, the individual will be required to provide certain identification when voting in the next state conducted election.

Where to Turn in Your Registration:
Voter registration applications should be turned in to the voter’s Regional Election Office. A list of Regional Election Offices can be found attached to the voter registration form.

How to Register Others:
In order to register voters, an individual must become a Registrar. In order to become a Registrar, contact any Regional Election Office for a quick training. A list of Regional Election Offices can be found attached to the voter registration form. Trainings will provide any additional information necessary to register voters.

Absentee Voting:
Any registered voter may vote absentee. No excuses are necessary. Applications to vote absentee may also be used to register any unregistered voter. If using this form to apply for an absentee ballot and register to vote, this application must be received by the Regional Election Office at least 30 days prior to the election (Oct 5, 2008). A list of Regional Election Offices can be found attached to the voter registration form.
Begin the Application Process

Dates: Absentee ballot applications can be requested and turned in anytime during a calendar year, up to 10 days before Election Day (Oct 25, 2008). Absentee ballots must be mailed no later than Election Day to be counted. If the ballot is to be faxed, it must be voted, witnessed and received by the appropriate fax in the Director's Office by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
*Ballots for all 40 districts are available at the following airports on Tuesday (Election Day only) from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.:

• Anchorage Ted Stevens International Airport (Domestic Terminal, car rental area)

• Fairbanks International Airport (1st floor, by the escalator)

• Juneau International Airport

• Ketchikan International Airport

• Kodiak Airport

• Sitka Airport

Early Vote:
Any registered voter may vote early. No excuses are necessary.
Dates: Registered voters may apply and vote in person as early as 15 days before an election (Oct 20, 2008) and no later than Election Day. Ballots for all 40 districts are available at all Regional Elections Offices. A list of Regional Election Offices can be found attached to the voter registration form.
