First, download and print a North Carolina Voter Registration form to mail into your local County Board of Elections Office:

IMPORTANT DATES

Regular voter registration deadline is October 10th: To be eligible to vote on November 4th, you must drop off or mail your registration form to your local County Board of Elections Office by October 10th.

One-Stop Early Voting: October 16th- November 1st:

You can vote in person during the One-Stop Early Voting period from October 16th through November 1st, if you are registered to vote in North Carolina or if you are an unregistered North Carolina resident who would otherwise be eligible to vote (you will be 18 or older on November 4th). A voter does not need an excuse to vote early in North Carolina.

If you believe you are registered but discover you are not on the voter list during One-Stop Early Voting, you can simply register again and vote at the One-Stop Early Voting location.

Absentee Ballot Application Deadline: Your application for an absentee ballot must be received by October 28th.
Absentee Ballot Deadline: Your completed absentee ballot must be received by 5 p.m on November 3rd.

Election Day: November 4th




North Carolina Registration: Know Your Rights!

Who Can Register to Vote?

Any U.S. citizen who will be at least 18 years old on November 4, 2008 and will be a North Carolina resident for at least the 30 days before November 4th can register to vote.


Can College Students Register to Vote?

Yes, North Carolina college students can register to vote in the county where they live during the school year. Students can still register even if they do not intend to stay in their college community after graduation.


Can Formerly Incarcerated People Register to Vote?

Yes, people who have been convicted of a felony can register to vote in North Carolina once they have completed their incarceration, parole, and probation.


When is the Voter Registration Deadline?

To register to vote on election day, you must drop off your registration form at your County Election Board or have it postmarked by 5:00 p.m. on October 10, 2008. If you have missed the October 10th deadline, you may register and vote at the same time, in person, at a One-Stop Early Voting site in your county from October 16, 2008 through November 1, 2008.


How Can I Vote by Mail?

First, register to receive an absentee ballot by mail before October 28, 2008. After you receive the absentee ballot, complete and return it before election day. Your completed absentee ballot must be received by 5 p.m on November 3, 2008 for your vote to be counted.


Do Voters Need to Bring ID on Election Day?

First-time voters who registered to vote by mail should bring a valid and current photo ID (like a driver’s license, student ID, employer ID or government ID) or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows their name and address.


When do the Polls Close on Election Day?

Your polling place will be open from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm. If any voter is in line to vote at the time the polls are closed, that voter will be permitted to vote.

What if I Get to the Polls and They Will Not Let Me Vote?

Federal law guarantees your right to vote by provisional ballot if there are any challenges to your registration, or to your right to cast a regular ballot, when you are at your polling place.
