Volunteering

On Tuesday my wife and I went to the N/NE Portland Obama Campaign for Change office to volunteer for the first time. Over the weekend we visited the office and signed up for a shift of data entry. Neither of us having volunteered for a political campaign before we didn't know what to expect. As we quietly entered the office we looked around wondering what we be doing.

My wife and I are both in our 20's, democrats, and an active LDS church memeber. I would really like to orgainze an event for LDS members who support Obama, but I am not sure how to go about doing it. If anyone out there would like to help me out, let me know. I have a house and a big backyard we could use. I am very into politics and would like to be more active but just not sure how. Anyone interested in getting together? I live in SE Portland.

Volunteering in Portland

Over that 100+ degree weekend when Barack appeared in Portland by the river and got the first huge crowd that was to presage his Berlin appearance, I was there.

I canvassed in Portland that weekend, having flown in on Thursday evening. We went out on Friday and Saturday.

The first day I went out with a woman from the SF Bay Area and we went to a pretty long list of houses in a neighborhood across the river from the Obama HQ. We talked to some folks, left literature at other places where no one was home.

The big surprise was being told that Barack was actually coming to Portland on Sunday. I had no idea. We volunteers were told the office would be closed on Sunday and everyone was invited to come to the riverfront to see him.

A good old fashion picnic with a tried and true StarBucks concept, a PICNIC IN THE PARK Drive-Thru Voter Registration & Meet The Candidates Event, SUNDAY, AUGUST 17th 2pm-7pm at Tualatin Community Park, Tualatin. It's an old fashion POTLUCK and it's BYOB - bring your own BBQ meats, beverages and beach chairs.

Congressional Senate Candidate, Jeff Merkley is a special guest and will talk one-on-one with picnickers as a key stop in the Tualatin/Tigard community part of his 100 Towns Tour for Change across Oregon. Tigard Representative, Larry Galizio is the key note speaker. Local candidates Jessica Adamson (Sherwood/ Wilsonville) and Jeff Barker (Aloha) will also join in the afternoon festivities.

The event following on the heels of the the Annual Tualatin Crawfish Festival a week prior serves up a fun relaxing afternoon with Obama and Democrat supporters from all over Washington County. Children will enjoy the new playground area with decorative gym climbs, and a scenic viewing area overlooking the beautiful Tualatin River. There will be face painting for kids, Obama Bubbles, and a friendly Pull 4 Obama TugO-War game for children and adults. Bring your Frisbees, play catch and throw the softball around the horn, serve it up on the tennis court, shoot three pointers on the basketball court, or bump it up with volleyball.

The main thrust of this event is to acquire new voter registrations in Washington County with a breakthrough concept modeled after drive through coffee stands... a Drive-Thu Voter Registration that can complete the entire sign up process in minutes with the assistance of capable volunteer registrars. The TigardObamanators, is a collective group of experienced and passionate volunteers with a "progressive" spin to traditional campaigning engaging their community to "connect" with neighbors and increase voter support and new registrations - particularly Latino voters in Washington County. This event paves the way to bolster Barack Obama's swelling support across Oregon and the rest of America in addition to key at stake Democratic positions nationwide.

Drive-Thru Voter Registration will be held from 12pm - 4pm. Picnic-goers can relax in the comfort and beauty of the park, enjoy a tasty smattering of potluck delights while having a close-up and personal conversation with local candidates. Here is what is on tap for the afternoon festivities:

PICNIC IN THE PARK Drive-Thru Voter Registration & Meet The Candidates EVENT

SUNDAY, AUGUST 17th 2pm-7pm at Tualatin Community Park.

Jeff Merkley is a special guest and will talk one-on-one with picknickers as a key stop in the Tualatin/Tigard community as part of his 100 Towns Tour for Change across Oregon. Merkley leads Gordon Smith in the latest poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports for the hotly contested US Senate seat while another internal poll shows Merkley surging ahead by 11 points among voters who could rate both candidates.

Rep. Larry Galizio (Tigard) is the key note speaker along with Lupita Maurer from WashCoDems tentatively committed. Local candidates Jeff Barker (Aloha), Jessica Adamson (Sherwood/ Wilsonville) and Ron Morgan, Field Organzier from WashCoDems will also be attending.

The event following on the heels of the the Annual Tualatin Crawfish Festival a week prior serves up a fun relaxing afternoon with Obama and Democrat supporters from all over Washington County. Children will enjoy the new sandpit playground with decorative gym climbs, and a scenic viewing area overlooking the beautiful Tualatin River. Bring your frisbees, play catch and throw the softball around the horn, serve it up on the tennis court, shoot three pointers on the basketball court, or bump it up with volleyball. It's an old fashion POTLUCK and it's BYOB - bring your own BBQ meats, beverages and beach chairs.

The main thrust of this event is to acquire new voter registrations in Washington County with a breakthrough concept modeled after drive through coffee stands... a Drive-Thu Voter Registration that can complete the entire sign up process in minutes with the assistance of capable volunteer registrars. The TigardObamanators in cooperation with WashCoDems have joined forces to increase Latino voter registrations in local communities and this event paves the way to bolster Barack Obama's swelling support across Oregon and the rest of America in addition to key at stake Democratic positions nationwide.

The Voter Registration drive is from 1-5pm. Picnic-goers can relax in the comfort and beauty of the park, enjoy a tasty smathering of potluck delights while having a close-up and personal conversation with local candidates. Here is what is on tap for the afternoon festivities:

It looks like we won't have a Gresham Obama office for the general election, unless we find donated space, or a generous supporter donates the rent; so I decided to try the online neighbor-to-neighbor program through BarackObama.com. I input my zipcode and got a list of 40 of my neighbors to canvass door-to-door. Since the list still calls my apartment complex Harmony Pointe instead of the Groves, I have a feeling most of the apartment dwellers on the list will have moved out. Turnover is pretty high here. Well, if there are new residents of those apartment, they probably need to register at their new address. So, if you're in Gresham, and don't want to drive down to the office on Division and 30th too often (likely with gas prices so high,) check out neighbor-to-neighbor. And, if you don't want to walk your own neighborhood, I could really use a buddy in mine.

We have a HOME, yeah! However there is much work that needs to be done and we NEED your HELP URGENTLY!

Calling the Obama calvary...What do you need you ask? How Can I help? What What What???

First, review the NEEDS WISH LIST below. Our first priority is LASER Printers with their corresponding TONER CARTRIDGES. Next, desk, chairs and shelves; and a large refrigerator in excellent condition should be sufficient for the office needs. Also at the top of the list is rolls of butcher paper, and red, white and blue poster paints to make many, many posters! We'll take any custom or homemade Obama posters that we can hang on the wall, too.

Starting today, Friday, here is where you can help (and spread the word out to the Oregon Obama community). We need lots of volunteers to help set up and organize the office, everything from cleaning, setting up desks, filing cabinets, shelves and office furniture. Getting computers online, organizing and stocking the office, kitchen and maintenance supplies, in addition to a supply/storage room, even making posters.

We will accept any and all donations or contributions, bring in whatever you have on hand especially office supplies. Again, refer to the Needs Wish List below! Someone will be at the office to accept donations everyday from 10am-9pm.

As a reminder as well, if you're able to, make it a point to bring along lots of SNACKS, FOOD, and BEVERAGES to feed our hard working volunteers, fellows and Field Leaders every time you come to the Obama office. They will appreciate it very very much!

Finally we’ll need many, many volunteers to make phone calls starting Sunday to get the word out about the new office. We'll concentrate on outfitting the office with everything we need and get the word out to our network of supporters throughout Washington County and city of Portland.

We're back in business Obama peeps, we're taking it to the streets and we're not stopping until we get BARACK OBAMA in the White House right! Last week I was at the Aspen Ideas Festival. iT is a remarkable experience if you ever get the opportunity. I sat in on a number of political sessions including a couple with Austan Goolsbee. As most of you know, Austan is Barack's economic advisor. He sat opposite Jack Kemp (ex Representative from Buffalo) on one panel and Allan Hubbard (Bush's previous chief advisor to the president on economic policy). In both cases, I saw the attack start from the first exchange. Austan spent all of his alloted time correcting the ridiculous overstatements, mischaracterizations and inaccuracies hurled about by the "other side." I can't tell you how frustrating that was. I congratulated Austan for keeping his head and explaining the realities of the Obama program gracefully.

Today I attended the Obama Open House for the new campaign office in SE Portland, Oregon. It was a nice event with a few heart-felt speeches. One of them was from ex-Governor Barbara Roberts. Her speech was generally good until she accused John McCain of saying as (Phil Gramm did say) that there is no economic problem and we are whiners. It is certainly possible that it was a slip but we have to do better. If we are changing the rules then we can't play by their rules. McCain has made a number of mistakes and will keep making them. We don't have to play fast and loose.

Oregon loves Obama! Primary Report...

Well we did it! We all worked so hard and we won Oregon! Woohoo! Congrats to everyone who put in endless hours for nothing but thank yous. Thanks to all of the out-of-staters who came from all corners of the country. A special thank you to Hannah and Pendry, the two rockinist FOs I know! I can't wait for fall... but since we have a few more primaries left perhaps I will make calls from home.

The day started with some sign waving all over the Portland streets. We hit the morning commuters and were shown a lot of love through honks! It was raining and cold, but we had a great time doing it. I love visibility. It's like being a cheerleader for Obama. In fact I think I will make some pom-poms for the fall. *chuckle*

When we got back from "visibility" in the morning we got prepared for the day. We were sending out canvassers all over Portland reminding people to vote. We picked up a lot of ballots!

The watching party at HQ was so much fun. Everyone was very excited, it was the best way to watch the results start coming in. The results in Portland were overwhelming for Obama (after Sunday's rally we figured it would be). The final (I believe) for PDX was Obama 66% HRC 34%. The state was a pretty big win at Obama 59% HRC 41%. After a speech from Earl Blumenauer and Barbara Roberts we all traveled to Kel's (a local Irish Pub) for food and drinks.

I am so proud to have been a volunteer here in Portland. It was a terrific experience. I meet many great people and thought the campaigh organization was amazing.

Sunday's Rally was fabulous and so much fun to work on. I hope to continue my involvement as things move to the general election.

It feels weird to wind down after all the incredible energy. I can't wait until we gear up again!

I want to shout out to all our field organizers, and my organizer, Adam Yates. Job well done.

McCan't to be "Spruced"

I read where McCan'ts people want him to "spruce" up his image. Apparently, they were shocked by the Portland rally. One of the things they have suggested is for him to wear designer sunglasses that reflect a more youthful image. For some strange reason, I find the concept of a "youthful McCain" to be an oxymoron.

Next, they will probably have McCan't wearing an enameled designer flag pin. Then he will criticize Obama for wearing a generic flag pin. Oops, I forgot, McCan't only wears a flag pin infrequently. Something conservative right wing talk radio seems to ignore.

If the McCan't people really want to do it up right, they need to book better lead in music. Maybe something along the lines of the Cranberries. I know the perfect Theme Song for McCan't:

Portland Rally - A Volunteer Prospective

I woke up at 6 am (or as I like to call it *ugh* in the morning) yesterday to get ready for the Obama rally here in Portland, Oregon. I was volunteering so I had to be there at 8 am. This is a bit difficult in Portland on a Sunday because busses do not run as frequently. (I am a mass transit gal... I don't drive) I knew it would be a long day. I knew it would be a hot day... and as the fates would have it my only Obama shirt is long sleeved. I knew it would be hard on my body. But I figured it would be worth it. It so was...

McCain's 75,000 ???

The far-wrong of the Republican Party in various blogs and articles today were downplaying the significance of the Oregon rally in Waterford Park. There were numeous comments that Oregon is noted as a Liberal state and such a rally is to be expected in someplace like Oregon. The blogs went even further, asserting that if the rally had been in Virginia, it would not have been anywhere near as large as the estimated 74,000 to 82,000 people.

My question to the McCan'ters (Supporters of Sen. John McCant) is this, "Exactly where in the conservative states has McCant had his 75,000 person rallies?

I must have missed them on the news. With all the lobbyists on his payroll, McCant should have gotten Somalian warlords or Saudi princes to back a rally for him somewhere.
