New President

Today, I watched the inauguration several times. I was so excited to see that Barack had finally become the President of the United States. I watched the big parade afterwards and even took notes on his speech so I could remember it forever.

We finally have a Democrat for President and we need to do something that will help others in the economy we have today. People are losing jobs, stock values, and most of all money. They need our help so try to raise as much money as you can to donate to our newest President. Today, I sent several more invitations and I want to raise at least $50.

A survey came out today that showed Senator Obama trails McCain 2 -1 in Oklahoma. That may seem like insurmountable odds, but what that survey also showed is that 58 percent of Republicans who planned to vote McCain also indicated they MIGHT CHANGE THEIR MIND!!!!!! That's HUGE!

To appeal to those folks who may be straddling the fence, we plan to march in the parade at the Yukon Czech Festival, October 4th, 9:00am. This festival attracts over 40,000 people from around the state. Imagine with me, seeing 100 plus Democrats marching united for Senator Obama and our local and state candidates in an area that is a traditionally Republican stronghold.

It's time to STAND UP and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! The Democratic party is the party of change, we're the party of working people, we are the party who takes care of our citizens and the rest of the world. JOIN US IN SPREADING THE SPIRIT OF HOPE AND CHANGE SENATOR OBAMA HAS INSPIRED.

To prepare for the march, we will gather at the Obama OK Headquarters, Tuesday, September 30, at 6:30 to make rally signs that declare our vision, our mission. Let's have some fun, be creative and make some memorable signs for the parade! ObamaOk Headquarters is located at the NW corner of NW 39th and Classen. Check the Events page for Oklahoma and sign up to make signs and more importantly: Join us in Yukon for the parade on the 4th; eat Kolaches and have some fun!!!

2008 Milford Labor Day Parade

Everyone came out this year and all had a blast. Beautiful day, lots of people, it was a site to see. The Shaheen, Lynch, Hodes and Obama campaigns were in force with hundreds of volunteers. Lynch led with a load of barrels on a flatbed. Shaheen had a huge semi-truck with barn signs all around and it was blasting some serious parade music. Hodes was cruising along in a old antique automobile. The New Hampshire Campaign for Change even had a float with Obama on it!

As you'll see in the mass of pictures taken, the float consisted of a voting booth, a couple stand-ins, and some pretty impressive decor on the truck, including a great quote by FDR. The Obama contingent led chant after chant, inspiring those along the parade route to sign along. A favorite included "Barack and Joe - Ready to Go!"

They're not alone. Come join this historic campaign in New Hampshire. Get involved! Find a local Field Office near you.

5th of July Parade in Laurel, MD - Loud and Proud for Obama

The day started with a little rain and a lot of enthusiasm. Our little group packed a walloped at the end of the line. Jemma lead us in the calls and response. Elliott and Pat worked the crowds. Wendy went “old school” by designing cool signs and passing out lollipops. We made sure that we had the U.S. Flag waving for all to see.

The Chants:

Vote for Obama…There’ll Be No Drama

Yes we can! Si Se Puede!

Spectators cheered us on. We had one thumb down, but our spirits were high. I felt like I was in the zone. Then, my 16 yr old nephew said, “Aunty, I’m tired.” I told him that the marchers in the Civil Rights Movement did not have walking shoes or bottled water. I don’t know if I told him that Aunty took a nap after the parade.

For those of you, who have participated in the parade, please share your thoughts with us.

Cheers,

Crystal

Purple Parade

I found red, blue and purple at the Crystal Lake parade this year. And there was Tabitha. This is a story of a city/county that is RED much like the city of Chicago is always BLUE.

In McHenry county all your neighbors are Republicans and it is a shock to the system when you find someone that is not. No one pulls the Democratic Primary ballot. Why should we? Most the time there are few democratic candidates, if any, running. During the general we are used to seeing Republicans unopposed. Bush won handily in 2000 and 2004.

This year the Democratic party enjoys more participation and excitement then has been seen for a time. At this parade we saw it in force. Here is our group before the parade started

and the Republicans

We had multiple banners, two vehicles, people walking with signs. Merri was wearing a shirt from the Iowa JJ, many had the Obama 08' or other candidates, and another had a Vote for Change shirt. I held the round O sign someone picked up at the Harkin Steak Fry last summer and others had signs and yardsigns from the Super Tuesday primary and later. My husband and I fashioned an "Obama stroller" with a yard sign, pompoms, and flags.

There are candidates running for state and county seats. Part of the county lies in the 8th IL congressional district and is represented by a democrat , Melissa Bean. Last cycle she won this decades long Republican seat and is up for re-election. The other part of the county lies in the 16th and this year Bob Abboud stepped up to the democratic plate to run against an incumbent Republican!

They are finding support among swing Republicans (like myself) and the independent minded. My friend Matt, who walked a few other parades in the suburbs this past week, commented that this parade had the most excitement of them all. It even started before we started to march! Members of my church (a United Church of Christ church) had a float. Some of them gave a thumbs up and came to talk to our group. Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam (a supporter who had to stay neutral) stopped by.

Even though we were in one of the last spots of the parade our mile plus march was welcomed. Our cheers found voices in the crowd. We had people consistently waving, making positive comments, many shook hands with the candidates, and yes some petted the dog (Bob's).

Future Congressman?

Ok the proud Mom is taking over for a paragraph :) These were the youngest supporters in the parade.

Jenna refused to wear her Barack Obama profile shirt so I put her in a Hawaiian sundress as an ode to Barack and completed it with a button. She walked for about a third of it, waving a sign or playing a toy horn before she had a mini meltdown and was put into the stroller. Kayla wore her 4th of July sundress and had a YES WE CAN button. She also walked about half the parade with whatever struck her to carry which included a pompom, flag, tamborine, and sign. Yes they even cheered! Jenna asks everyday "I want Barack Obama parade" to which we reply - later this month (McHenry on the 20th of July)!

And I cannot leave without mentioning Tabitha. I first met her at a phonebanking event during the primary. Then I ran into her in Indiana for voter registration efforts. She drove over 30 miles to march in this parade (it is not even in her county). I was impressed already and as you can see she came prepared - complete with a bazooka!

Oh yes watch out Republicans! From this parade experience I forecast the color Purple is IT for the fall.

From the grassroots- Mid America Mom

*Thanks to Lynda for some of the pictures*

Email from Wendy - No Voter Resgistration for July 4/ How about a Parade?

From: Wendy
Date: Jul 2, 2008 10:18 AM
Subject: Visibility Opportunity- Parade for Change - July 5th

Good morning everyone...are you fired up! and ready to go? Great!

I truly enjoyed meeting everyone on Saturday and am looking forward to working together to bring about a change in our nation! That being said. I checked with the City of Laurel and discovered that their fireworks will be held Saturday July 5th @ 9:15 pm.

Bad News/Good News
Unfortunately the vendor spaces have been filled for this event so we will be unable to conduct voter registration this time....

But they welcome our participation in the parade that will be held Saturday morning @ 11 am! Are you ready? This will be a great visibility opportunity and a chance to keep Barack and voting in the forefront of peoples minds.

Bring/Wear any Obama '08 paraphenailia you've got. (Flags, posters, buttons, pins, flyers, banners, signs) I know that there are items that can be printed from the website but we can also go "old school" and make some signs..paint, markers, glue anyone?) Let your creative juices flow.

We will meet at the Laurel Boys and Girls Club on the Corner of 7th and Montgomery Sts. @ 10 am to assemble and get signed in. The parade route is only a mile and a half, a great exercise opportunity.

I plan to post this on the website to invite any other local particiipants. Let's show our support on the local level for Barack Obama and do our part to Unite For Change.

If you have any questions please fell free to call me. See you Saturday!

July 4th Ashland Parade

Hi All,

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July! Along with some veterans and volunteers, we marched in the Ashland parade showing our support for Barack Obama with some blusterous chants.

See Here: YouTube Video

The turnout was great! We had nearly 60 people show up to march with us and show support for Senator Obama.

The jam packed audience loved it too!

See Here: YouTube Video

We Obama Fellows really want to thank the Veterans who came out in support, for their service, and for their help making sure that we elect Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States!
Eagle County Dems March in Vail Parade with Colorado Lt. Governor O'Brien

Happy 4th of July everyone.

We had a great day yesterday marching with Lieutenant Governor Barbara O'Brien in the Vail parade. (The Roaring Fork Dems marched in Aspen.) I have pictures and a full report posted at SquareState. Stop by and take a look.

Since I can't post pictures here, you will have to see my post online elsewhere. It's worth the trip.

Reminder: Please point your friends and Sen. Obama supporters that live in Eagle County, Colorado to our Eagle County for Barack Obama group. It would be nice to get this list in the hundreds before long and have an full corps of volunteers ready to work to win the election for Senator Obama and our other Democrats.

Here is the link to join the Eagle County for Barack Obama group.

Tell us what happened in your area for Independence Day. Put it in a blog or send an email to the group or add a comment below. - dkm

4th of July Parade -- Report from Sonoma, CA

Wow -- that was fun! It's the first time I've marched in a 4th of July parade. Add that to my first political contribution and all the firsts involved in volunteering -- it's been quite a ride and I look forward to the months ahead as we work to get Obama elected.

We had teens, middle aged and seniors. We had men and women. We had people join in with us from the watching crowd. There were lots of waves and clapping from the onlookers as well. We had a "working class mama for Obama", an "independent for Obama" and a "Republican for Obama" cheerleading the parade as we chanted "Yes We Can! Si Se Puede!". We had a two year old who later will be able to brag that his first 4th of July parade was spent with his father in the parade.

We were quite a mixture in many ways, but we all had tremendous enthusiasm in common. A sense of strength and power exuded from the group, and it was accompanied by excitement and even joy. For me, the excitement was partly born of discovery of unity amidst diversity, that I could be working side by side with people often so different from myself who share a common dream for our country. It's this energy that is running our campaign, and it's not a energy of "blind hope" and insubstantial talk. Just five days ago I'd hosted the study party with some of the same people in attendance, and reading through the 64 page Blueprint for Change with its detailed plans brought home how substantial this campaign is.

We've got what it takes to get Obama elected -- we've got it all! Yes we can, yes we ARE!

Obama & Family Visit "Historic Butte America" On Nations Birthday!

My 'Hood' In Butte Mt. Great Great Grandma Johannas' "Glenn House"...Red Roof Behind The Tall Tree (I Planted 1974) On Right.

I've now lived in Seattle for over 30 years. I've lived here but I still consider my birthplace and childhood home of Butte, Montana my true home. So when friends asked why Mr. Obama would want to visit Butte Montana for the 4th...while an obvious choice for anyone knowing Buttes significant history, not so much for the average American.

Most feel that Montana's electorate would never be numerous enough to greatly affect national politics, but what the state lacked in quantity, it has more than made up for in the effectiveness of it's elected representatives. Always politically conscious and demonstrative, Butte, itself, has entertained and imposing number of presidents and candidates. Many of them appearing in Buttes wonderful 4th of July festivities. Among those, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Howard Taft, Warren Harding, Eisenhower and JFK and Mrs. Kennedy.

So why was Butte Montana a required stop on the road to the White House? We'll in a word, mining. The mines of Butte always have been the true essence of Butte. Most who have lived in Butte were unusually dependent on the mines in one way or another. Butte copper played key roles in the industrialization of America. My own family lived in Butte since 1860 and all Irish immigrants from Cork Ireland. Most although not all of them were hard rock miners. As the people of Butte created a unique lifestyle of the great mining camp, so did the mines create the lifestyle of the people.

Most aren't aware that the "Richest Hill On Earth" is also known as "The Gibraltar of Unionism". Butte has been a union town since June 13, 1878 when the Butte Workingman's Union was organized. Since that time, there have been strikes, violence, solidarity, and dynamiting's! One of the many union disputes occurred on June 23 rd 1914 when bout 100 men opened rifle fire from Union Hall upon thousands of miners gathered around the building. The miner's returned the fire causing the Union president and others to ultimately flee the building. The attacking miners then took cases of dynamite from the nearby mines and blew up the hall! Whatever the changes in union alignments may have been, one fact is clear: Butte has always been a union town!

Coming full circle Butte is now the site of the largest superfund cleanup in the country. The people of Butte are working diligently to ensure that the the mining that occurred in the last 140 years, does not have adverse effects on Montana's pristine ecology. Their efforts are impressive. They have completed a ground water treatment facility which removes the toxic minerals from existing mine water and it is then returned to nearby Silver Bow Creek safe for fish and wildlife.

So when Mr. Obama visits Butte on Friday to appear in the parade, no doubt, this history played a significant role. Butte is a prime example of what is important to America...Families, Immigrants, Industry, history, and of course politics and the environment.

The theme of this years celebration is "Family Business".

The campaign made a smart choice for the Obama family. One that I believe will put Montana firmly in the Obama war chest of growing former republican strongholds.

Happy Birthday America! Happy 10th Birthday Malia!

(At Butte's Freedom Fest Parade 2008 AP Photo)

It was truly a joyous experience having crowds of people yelling for Obama, yelling for us, the Obama supporters. Joann and I had made Obama Pride logo buttons and I passed out about 500 Obama buttons which didn't even last half way through the route. People were SO excited to get Obama stickers and buttons!

The Obama group won the parade's People's Choice award! Joann took photos as she marched: http://www.flickr.com/photos/buttons4obama/sets/72157605909020106/

Great work Jen and Jake for organizing this wonderful event!

P.S.I said in a recent post I stated I was going to get the Obama Pride video ready for the iPhone.
Obama Pride

So the gay community was out pretty hard for Obama on Sunday. We went to the gay pride parade in WEHO and found some extended Obama family marching along..."WE WANT CHANGE, WE WANT IT NOW"..."O, O, O, OBAMA! O, O, O, 08!"..."YES WE CAN, YES WE CAN!" There was even an Obama-mobile!

It was a rowdy parade and we loved seeing the Obama suppoters passing out Obama Pride stickers and registering voters. Everywhere we turned folks had on Obama stickers in the crowd and Obama signs. Who said the gays were for Hillary??? Vivvy came along with her "Barack the Vote" doggie tee and an Obama Pride sticker. She was an instant hit.

In case you're wondering why we were at the gay pride festival...we were actually trying to promote our wedding planning...lol...but the Obama enthusiasm was a pleassant surprise. LGBT 4 OBAMA!!!

It's Not Easy Being Part of the Green Machine

I personally love this time of year. I've got an Irish bloodline on both sides of my family and my birthday happens to be the day after St. Patrick's Day. Like many Americans that are a mutt of nationalities, I attempted to connect to the Irish part of my heritage until my first study abroad in August 1999. I was 19, on my return flight from Moscow. The plane ride was ten hours nonstop, my final paper was due upon landing in Dulles, and I sat with pen in hand scribbling. Somewhere into the first hour of tireless writing, I heard a woman chatting a few rows behind me. Her Irish brogue stood out amongst the deep consonance of the Russian accents around me. When I turned toward her voice and peered down the aisle, I knew she was the woman a few rows back with auburn hair curling past her shoulders. Her creamy skin and high freckled cheeks moved to her commanding tone. I had to talk to her about my Irish heritage…with my luck, maybe she knew a distant relative.

I mentioned to her that I was Irish too, trying to enter into the conversation. She asked me which County I hailed from, to which I was forced to admit that I wasn't 100 per cent Irish. My grandfather's family originally came from Ireland and immigrated to America in the 1800s. Like a pot of gold at the end of my family tree's rainbow, I clarified that the Delaney's were from County Kilkenny. Immediately, my fiery haired airplane neighbor explained to me in her brogue that I was not Irish – but American – as if being both American and Irish was actually a rejected hybrid of St. Patty's clichés: leprechauns, rainbows, shamrock milk shakes, and alcoholism brought on by consuming gallons of green beer. I thought maybe she just wanted me to tell the true story about Irish Americans.
The history of St. Patrick's Day and Irish Americans began in Ireland around the year 460. St. Patrick did not banish all the snakes from the Emerald Isle or introduce Christianity to Ireland. Actually, he was a rich British kid whose father was a Christian deacon (apparently for the tax incentives). When Patrick was sixteen, Irish raiders captured him from his family's estate and enslaved him back in Ireland. Six years later, Patrick finally escaped his slavery (as a lone shepherd) and ran off to the Irish coast. When he returned to England, he had a vision where an angel told him to go back to Ireland to convert the Irish to Christians. He stayed in England and studied for fifteen more years to become a priest, then headed to Ireland on his mission. His mission was so successful that the bars in Ireland were actually closed on March 17th until tourism broke the barroom's seal in the 1970s.
To celebrate my heritage, I have three requirements for my St. Patrick's Day experience: (1) ham, cabbage, and potatoes, (2) a pint of Guinness, and most importantly, (3) live traditional Irish music. While most Irish and Non-Irish Americans celebrate Irish heritage that day, did you know that the first Irish Parade was started in America? In 1762, Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City to connect with one another and Irish Americans.

Then, with the potato famine in 1845, Irish began flooding America. But America wasn't so happy to accept them into their communities and during a St. Patrick's Day celebration, they were portrayed as "drunken monkeys" by newspapers. But despite the public's distaste for Irish Americans, as they gathered at St. Patrick's celebrations, Irish Americans realized their powerful numbers gave them an amazing amount of political power. In fact, the Irish holiday in America became so important to the political community that it was considered "must-attend event for a slew of political candidates" if they were to win over the Irish voting community known as "the green machine."

Come out for the St. Patrick's Day Parade and celebrate your Irish heritage. The Annual "Wearin' of the Green" in Wilkes-Barre is on Sunday, March 16th at 2pm down South Main and East Northampton Streets. The main event in Scranton is Saturday, March 15th, at 11:45am. If you are interested in showing your political power like the Irish Americans of the 1800s, Obama volunteers will be handing out balloons and possibly registering voters at both the Wilkes-Barre and Scranton parades.

Honolulu coverage- MLK Obama supporters, Akaka bill

The following is KITV channel 4's coverage of our presence at the Martin Luther King day parade last Saturday. They closely segwayed from coverage of us at the MLK parade to Obama's declared support for the Akaka bill. I recorded the 5 and 6 oclock broadcasts. I think it was shown on the late night broadcast, but I only recorded the first two.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sksJbvShB_U

(This site did not accept the standard Youtube embedding code- if anyone has workaround code please comment. Edits: cropped out commercial break, inserted longer parade coverage footage from 6 oclock broadcast.

Los Angeles MLK Day Parade

Thousands packed the streets of Los Angeles to celebrate the life and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Marching bands, community organizations, and elected officials all joined in the march, as well as volunteers and supporters of Senator Obama.

We talked to many people at the parade, and the most common given answer for why they supported Barack Obama was that they wanted change.

Barack Obama is the only candidate that has the ability to bridge this country’s political divide and form a working majority to push forward an agenda that will bring health care to all, new jobs to rural and urban communities, and an end to the war in Iraq.

Here's a video of the parade and our supporters in action:

The primary is now only 13 days away. Help change the world. Get Involved TODAY!

Hope on Display

Not even freezing temperatures could keep Obama supporters from being part of New Hampshire’s local holiday traditions. Yesterday, volunteers and supporters bundled up and braved the cold winter night to march in the Exeter Holiday Parade, whose theme this year was “Scenes of Hope from Around the World.” They handed out glowsticks and candy canes to parade watchers and warmed up the night with enthusiasm and hope.

And in the Nashua office, a volunteer who regularly writes post cards, makes phone calls and canvasses decided to use her remaining spare time to hand-sew a quilted Obama banner. She presented it to the staff before yesterday’s canvass.

Growing a Movement of Firsts

September was busy in Central Illinois. On Saturday, November 3rd will you be?

And September was full of firsts.

My family and I started on Labor Day visiting family in the Chicago area. It was a perfect weekend for a parade! We marched with supporters from the northwest and south suburbs of Chicago in the annual Buffalo Grove Days parade with the Obama float in tow . Later that week I held an Obama playdate at the house. Toddlers and preschoolers played while their moms talked about the candidate.

On the 8th we headed to Barbeque for Barack! We attended two that day and the contrast was stark- rural town to inner city. Next day we attended the Champaign County democratic picnic. Nice turn out!

Here I met someone from Obama's home district when he was in the Illinois legislature and now attending school at the University of Illinois. I also met a local state legislator that knows him. I loved hearing a few stories of our adopted son!

As a bonus they even had a bluegrass band playing.

Lee is a Bassist for Obama. New mybarackobama group forming????

He also helps to cook at the democratic functions. His chef co-hort is Lloyd. I ask Lloyd how long he has been a democrat. "All my life. I know nothing else!"

The mobile phone banking initiative is taking off. From state line to state line across central Illinois dozens of supporters gathered to make phone calls into Iowa. One of those supporters, earlier in the year, claimed she would never do so and here she was. In one day our phone bank made almost 900 calls!

Many attended camp! Camp Obama made its first stop in Illinois outside of Chicago at Illinois State University. Mara shares her story here .

And our activities in the mybarackobama.com community is as busy. Toward the end of the month the democratic contenders debated at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. A group of women, many from Illinois, took part in a first of its kind debate feedback/discussion group on the site.

********

And the month is not complete without a canvassing story!

A group of us, mainly students, went over the big river to canvass in Iowa. We start in the office as Jeff, a staff member, leads us through the drill. I listen attentively as it is my first experience and I was not alone in this. Before we head out I talk to Jonathan. He is at Illinois State University and involved with Students for Obama on campus (you can see some of these students- at the point of 9:19 in this Video) It is fitting that Obama has such a strong presence there- Abraham Lincoln helped to draw up the legal documents for starting this University. Today it is known as one of the largest producers of teachers in the nation. I asked how the ride was since it is far. He and his friend Brock came over on a bus that originated at the University of Illinois campus! During the ride the group talked to each other, someone had brought along Obama's stances on issues for them to read, and they watched episodes of the TV show -The West Wing (and it is not lost on me that the president on that show was a democrat and a lawyer).

They tell me they are a little nervous about getting into the conversations. I also feel the same as we head out in the perfect weather but during an Iowa vs Iowa state football game (who is going to answer their door? It is like when the Cubs play the Cardinals- nothing else matters!)

I catch up with Jonathan a few days later on the phone. He was assigned to Robbins Iowa - an area he describes as a middle class rural area. What did he find there? He found most people were undecided, many were leaning toward Obama, and healthcare was the issue of concern. They also were really friendly. He will do it again!

For my walk I was paired with a student, this is her first election and first campaign experience. Why Obama? She was hooked when he spoke, she was in high school then, at the 2004 convention. It was nice that one of our early doors - the gentleman was like I am about 80% Obama. Not too hard to talk to him ;) We came across many women that were undecided. They cited healthcare, the war, and education as top concerns. We also came across a veteran from vietnam and another from Korea! And you know what? Over and over we heard - "I am undecided and waiting until later."

The best conversation we had was the last door. We spent a good amount of time. He wanted to hear our stories and shared some of his. The voter spoke of canvassing 4 years ago for another candidate and who he likes in this election. Obama is in the running. As we walked away my partner shared that she thought this was the best conversation we had and it was all worth it. I thought - it was a fantastic first for her. And hers and mine and the thousands of firsts out there will add up to victory!

As you can see we are busy growing the Obama movement. Join us. Make the Canvass Saturday November 3rd in Iowa, a first.

Chicago area sign up-<a href="http://illinois.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/organizing/4vmyr"
Obama supporters at the Route 66 Parade in Duarte, California

They say it never rains in Southern California - It pours. Well, it poured on us today. It rained the hardest while we were waiting, but stopped when we walked. So it turned out real well.

We even recruited a new supporter during the rain, the person who took this picture for us will be coming to our organizaitional meeting this week. We got his contact info!

One way to overcome negativity

My family spent part of the Labor Day weekend at Buffalo Grove Days which, as one might expect, is an event held annually in Buffalo Grove, Illinois.

We marched in the parade on Sunday with a group I estimated at about 50 supporters, complete with a small float and a van decked out in Obama signs and balloons. Throughout the parade route, there were mostly enthusiastic cheers from the crowd as they recognized the Obama contingent walking by. We also got some great reactions due to the dogs in our group that had signs saying "Bark for Barack," a request heeded by virtually all of the canine-Americans along the parade route (as well as many of the humans!)

It wasn't a completely pro-Obama crowd though. A few Ron Paul supporters tried to convince us to change candidates (no way!) and, in addition to that, I recall three or four individuals giving the thumbs down or saying something negative about Barack or something pro-Clinton. I also remember seeing one guy in a Kucinich shirt and another for Edwards. Overall though, a very positive feeling for President Obama emanated from the crowd throughout the entirety of the parade route.

The main thing I wanted to relate, however, was how we dealt with one guy in particular. I don't remember the specific words he used, but as we were marching and yelling "Hope! Change! Obama! Now!" this guy was basically telling us to shut up in a very vigorous way. It caught me a little off guard at first, but then I started to get really angry. The only productive thing I could think to do was to shout even louder. In short order, our group raised the volume level and easily drowned out the naysayer, HOPE! CHANGE! OBAMA! NOW!!! HOPE! CHANGE! OBAMA! NOW!!! To the point that he eventually gave up. It was a really cool moment.

I have never actively supported any candidate for any office until Barack Obama, so it was new territory for me to be wearing an Obama button and publicly supporting a candidate in a parade. It was a tremendous feeling to overcome the negativity personified by the guy who wanted us to shut up and go away. Well, I've got news for him, we are not going to shut up and we are definitely not going away.
As I reflected on things as he faded into the background, I realized that the guy who was telling us to shut up as we supported Barack in the parade is going to be showing up in a lot of different places. In fact, he already has. Not that specific person, but "that guy" or "that woman" who is so numb and settled in to the status quo that they don't want to hear about the things this campaign has been discussing; People who are afraid to even consider the possibility that we can be for a candidate and don’t have to be against someone or pick the lesser of two evils. People for whom having hope, working for change and taking back the control of our government is a nice concept, but they don’t believe it can ever happen.
I don’t think we will be able to change all of their minds, we don’t have enough time, but I think the main thing to keep in mind when we see or hear from these folks, is that we all need to do our best to take some sort of positive action and do something constructive. Someone trying to shout us down? Shout louder!! Someone posting a negative comment on a blog? Post a positive one and point out the error of their line of thinking. Someone touting a poll showing someone else in the lead? Go sign up another Obama supporter or send in a donation (or both!) March in a parade or wear an Obama button or shirt. Inspire someone.

If we all take action and pull in the same direction, we can and will make this happen and, in the process, make this a better country and a better world. As was said during Barack’s campaign for US Senator, “Yes we can!!!”

Monroe Fair Days Parade - Obama Visibility Event 08/25/2007

>

This dispatch is from the energetic an enthusiastic Emilie from Redmond who organized an Obama entry at the Monroe Fair Days Parade on Saturday 08-25-2007:

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for helping to make the Monroe parade an Obama visibility success.

8 people marched, with Nate and Courtney joining for their first Obama event
and driving all the way up from Dupont. The picture was taken after the
parade so it doesn't show but it was a big parade with lots of spectators.

We handed out 500 flyers (ran out), and many bumper stickers, buttons and
rally signs. The crowd was noticeably less politically aware or more
Republican than the Shoreline parade spectators. I noticed one of the 7
judges was clapping wildly! We were the only presidential campaign in the
parade and hopefully made some more Obama aware.

_____

Once again, Obama supporters in all parts of Washington State are getting out there and doing the work that needs to be done at the grassroots level. The energy is amazing, and as Emilie states and as I have experienced, OBAMA SUPPORTERS ARE THE ONLY ONES OUT AT THE LOCAL LEVELS RIGHT NOW! We need to strike while the fire is hot and the opportunity is available - the public support of every day ordinary citizens like you and me is making a difference.

There's another Parade taking Place today in Elma, WA, which is located in Grays Harbor County (central coastal region). I hope to be able to report on that soon. Sincerely, Amy Maurer

Face Painting for Barack

The Bettendorf “Old Fashioned” Fourth of July turned out to be a holiday of fun, excitement, and the traditional summer heat in the Quad Cities. All of it made for a great day for the Obama supporters and volunteers who were in attendance.

The day started with a morning parade, and to fit in with the old fashioned theme, we sported a ’63 Cadillac convertible with “OBAMA 08” decals on both sides (nicknamed the ‘Obamalac’). If that weren’t enough of a spectacle, the huge number of volunteers walking alongside the car wearing Obama t-shirts, while passing out Jolly Ranchers and Obama for America stickers certainly caused us to stand out.

Immediately following the parade was the Bettendorf Festival in the Park—an afternoon of grilled food, carnival rides, and even a petting zoo.

To get in the spirit of the festival we set up our own official Obama for America booth in the park. With the help of some incredibly artistic volunteers, we offered various arts and craft items, Barack Obama hats and stickers, and—our most popular attraction—face painting. Kids loved it, and it gave us a chance to talk to parents about Barack while they waited.

Between arts and crafts enthusiasts and curious passers-by, the number of people who walked up—to talk about Barack, ask us questions, or simply tell us that they are supporters—overwhelmed us. Many people came up to us and told us, in appropriate Fourth of July spirit, that they felt compelled to do something to change the direction that their country has been headed. We were happy to tell them how supporting Barack Obama is a great start.

In all, it was a great old fashioned Fourth. We got to spread the word about Barack to so many people, hand out tons of stickers and signs, and some of us even learned how to paint faces.

And, of course, we had the privilege of walking in a parade next to the Obamalac.

Marching in the Storm Lake 4th of July Parade

A bunch of Obama organizers and volunteers all lined up for the Storm Lake parade at 10:00 am with the Buena Vista Democrats. The Dems had a great float...an old school silver hitch plastered with candidates' signs and red, white, and blue balloons.

Our Obama crew had the most volunteers of any candidate! We walked the parade route and handed out stickers and got people from the crowd to sign supporter cards. One of us fell behind, and when the parade was over, we started getting worried as we waited for her to join us. She finally appeared, with almost 20 supporter cards in her hand!!! We were all thoroughly impressed!

At the end of the parade we milled around the shops and food venues by the lake and talked with both supporters and undecideds. We got into a great conversation with some people who were curious about Senator Obama. We traded them a health care packet for some funnel cake so by the time we left they were well informed and we had satisfied our funnel cake craving!

All in all, it was a great day! If you're in the area, you should stop by our local field office in Spencer at 301 Grand Ave!
July 4th in Iowa Falls and Ames

While Senator Obama toured southeast Iowa with his family on the Fourth of July, Iowans in Ames and Iowa Falls were also excited about his campaign for change. As hundreds of flag-clad people of all ages lined the streets for parades in both cities, spirits ran high on a beautiful day.

In rural Iowa Falls, a traditional Republican stronghold, both Democrats and Republicans showed their frustration with the status quo. One Republican said he liked Obama and that “others should keep an open mind.

In between cheerleaders throwing candy to kids and high school marching bands, politics was in action as well. State and local Democrats marched in force to the delight of cheering crowds. Senator Obama’s campaign made a particularly strong impression. Iowans young and old proudly showed off Obama buttons and stickers, eagerly shouting out as campaign workers walked by handing out souvenirs. Many would yell out “I’m for Obama! Come over here!” And the kids were very eager for Obama stickers. In the race for President, Senator Obama’s name was undoubtedly the most visible at the two parades.
The day reaped more than good cheer for the Obama campaign. All along the parade routes potential caucus-goers committed to Senator Obama by signing supporter cards, far more than anyone at the events expected. The ever growing groundswell of grassroots support for Barack was readily apparent on the Main Streets of Ames and Iowa Falls.

In Ames, a college town, students intending to caucus for the first time showed their excitement for Barack. One student from Iowa State University said, "Obama! Yeah, I'll sign a card! What can I do to help!?" The enthusiasm surrounding the day’s events was energizing.

As Americans in Iowa celebrated our independence, a time when colonists stood up to injustice and decided it was time for monumental change, the urgency for a new direction was evident once again. In a true Fourth of July spirit, yesterday showed that Iowans are prepared to take action. Looking through the crowds, at the throngs of Obama supporters signing up to volunteer, committing to caucus, and showing off their support, it was clear that people across the state feel inspired by Barack’s message of hope. What better day to talk about hope for change than the Fourth of July?

Mardi Gras in Sioux City: Perfect Weather, Raining Beads

The name of the game is beads. As many beads as is humanly possible. And Obama volunteers had them by the handful, tossing them out to eager crowds during Friday night's Mardi Gras Parade in Sioux City:

And a few excited Obama supporters watching the event even got some t-shirts:

The Parade is part of Sioux City's annual Mardi Gras celebration and the Obama team here had a great time participating. Below you can see some of our volunteers just after the parade ended, ready to go check out some of the rides and music waiting just up the street near the riverfront.

Lots of people signed supporter cards while waiting in line for custard or funnel cake; others asked for some more information about Barack's vision for uniting our country and solving the issues that confront us each and every day.

For those of you who are in the Sioux City area and would like to find out more, please feel free to stop by our office, located at 1322 Pierce Street. And next Tuesday and Wednesday we'll have extensive coverage of the Obama family's swing through southeastern and central Iowa. Click here to see where they'll be!

Utah for Obama Group Update

Saturday's meeting was a great success! We had around 20 people attend, and there was some very good feedback. Below is a summary of the topics discussed. If you are unable to attend meetings, but would like to help out with anything, please let us know. We are happy to coordinate with you outside of the meetings. It looks like we're growing quite a bit, and getting a lot of interest from the general public. There are a lot of things we could use help with that aren't mentioned here, so if you want to help and don't know how please contact Mark Rothacher and myself, and we'll let you know what our pressing needs are, or you can let us know what you're interested in doing.

St. Patrick's Day Parade

Utah for Obama marched in the Salt Lake City St. Patrick's Day Parade. Talitha Day and Sherri Vance coordinated the effort, and created our props. We had some clover-shaped signs with a logo on one side, and UtahForObama.org on the other, as well as 6 clover-shaped signs spelling out O'BAMA.

We had 11 people signed up, and were worried that not enough people would show up to carry the letters. But, the morning turned out better than any of us had expected!
