The Busy Campaign for Change Office

I stopped in to the downtown Suffolk Campaign for Change office today to drop off some odds and ends as I was on my way to the DMV to correct my address on my drivers license, it needed to be straightened out before election day. Anyway, I met Darla! Hi Darla!!! There she was, busy as a bee in the offices. The office was very full of activities, new posters, big photos, food and a great big monitor counting down the minutes until the election. It was very encouraging, especially after the low turn out we had over the week-end for canvassers.

There is a little store in the little "mall" where our office is. I've been buying Obama buttons there but end up giving them away while canvassing. I am down to my last one so I stopped in the store to buy some more and he was out of them! He had several other designs but I didn't like them nearly as much. I bought one but will hold out for the promised arrival of more of the kind he had before. He (I should learn his name) also sells Obama tee-shirts and hats. I ought to buy a hat, I like hats, but I make my own tee-shirts by printing my own designs on iron on transfers paper then I iron them on to plain tee-shirts. I also make refrigerator magnets that parody the the 'Virginia is for Lovers' logo. It has Virginia is for Obama instead.

Also, over the week-end I made a mini-poster in response to Obama's joke about "Contrary to popular belief, I was not born in a manger.....I was instead born on Krypton..."

Of course I also printed each of those designs on tee-shirts.

I wish I had a button maker!

Vivian is one of New Hampshire’s most enduring supporters of Barack Obama. Having met Barack at an event just a few months after he announced his candidacy, Vivian decided on the first-term senator from Illinois over the deep field of Democratic candidates. There was something in the way he talked to her—cool, intelligent, and thoughtful—that led Vivian to believe that he would change the way things had been going in recent years.

Perhaps one of the most persuasive people to set foot in the Nashua office, she has been known to turn an undecided voter into a full-fledged supporter while managing to schedule them to do repair work at her house the next weekend. She knocks on car windows while holding signs at intersections and poses tough questions about jobs and health care to McCain-stickered cars. She volunteers at every event in the area, whether it is a rally for Barack Obama himself or the last-minute organizational meeting before a big week of campaigning.

Just recently, in the wake of the collapse of finance giant Lehman Brothers, Vivian’s employer downsized its operation. The most recent hire, Vivian found herself at the bottom of the seniority ladder, and management had to let her go.

Tears still in her eyes, the first stop Vivian made after losing her job was our field office. With her usual big smile and eagerness to help out, she announced that she was going to have a few more hours to offer the campaign on top of her already substantial volunteering schedule. She proceeded to her usual position at the head of our phone bank, laughing in her usual way, but this time, with just a bit more determined than usual. Vivian McGuire is a constant reminder to all of us here in the Nashua office why we need change and why we need Barack Obama.

Long days' journey.

Whew. Well, I'm here. I took Amtrak down here, and while I love trains, the American train system offers few options in terms of scheduling for infrequently traveled routes.

Which meant a 3am train out of Penn Station for me. Fun! But I finally made it to the Mason Family Compound at around 2pm and unpacked in my room.

But no matter, I got here. I was on essentially no sleep, so I went down to the Virginia Beach Obama office (which is on the Boulevard, near Rosemont) to check in and then went home to crash.

Lots of activity there. People walking in off the street to register, as well as people phone banking and the field directors and organizers planning out stuff. And it wasn't even particularly bustling, as a lot of folks were out on the streets canvassing.

If you're nearby and want to help out, come by the office! There's always someone there.

Let me rephrase that, if you're nearby, you NEED to come help out. Stop by. Here's a map.

And if you're not nearby, volunteer wherever IS nearby. There's no excuses for not pitching in this year.

Off to bed, first day of real work (for me) is tomorrow. I shall cast a long shadow of volunteering on my hometown

Arlington / Lexington Regional Democratic Office

Hello everyone,

I am still hearing that a lot of people out there do not know about the existence of our office, so here is the information.

The Regional Democratic Office, located at 148 Massachusetts Ave in East Arlington, was funded and opened by the Arlington and Lexington Democratic Town Committees. Our mission is to support the Democratic candidates up and down the ticket. The focus is on the presidential race, so we have a lot of activity going on for the Obama campaign.

We are making voter ID calls into New Hampshire almost daily. Our usual schedule is Monday through Thursday evenings, 6:30 - 8:30 PM (skipping nights this week and next due to the Jewish holidays), Saturdays 2:30 - 5:00 PM, and Sundays noon - 5:00 PM.

Canvass trips to do door-to-door voter ID in New Hampshire originate from the office and Lexington High School every Saturday and Sunday. Saturday trips leave at 9:00AM, Sunday 10:30AM.

To sign up for any activity, you can call the office at 781-316-2889 daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (and later on phone bank nights). You can also send email to ArlingtonMAForObama =at= gmail =dot= com OR LexingtonForObama =at= gmail =dot= com.

Finally, our office is a distribution hub for campaign material orders from the state party. Order forms and checks are due each Tuesday at noon and the materials are promised by late afternoon the Friday of the same week (they arrived at 6:30PM last week, somewhat due to the poor weather). Women's Week: Keene Canvass Kick-off with Jan Schakowsky and Nancy Keenan

Saturday, Illinois Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and NARAL President Nancy Keenan kicked off a canvass at our Campaign For Change office in Keene. Over 100 people showed up to help spread Barack’s message and to hear Congresswoman Schakowsky and Nancy Keenan discuss why Barack Obama is the best choice for women in this election. Both speakers stressed the fact that Obama is a strong advocate for issues like pay equity, reproductive rights, and expanding access to health care.

After kicking off the canvass, Schakowsky and Keenan headed to Keene State College on the other side of town. They walked around campus and talked to students, faculty and other members of the Keene State College community about Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s commitment to protecting the rights of women.

Following the Keene State College visit, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Nancy Keenan traveled to the town of Peterborough where they held a discussion on women’s issues at the Toadstool Bookstore in town. Several dozen men and women attended the event where the two speakers addressed what was at stake for women in this election.

Yes, folks, I'm kind of sad.

Went to the Grand Opening of the Pittsburgh Office, and, I must say, I felt a bit let down.

You see, I worked the PA Primary, and had a great time. We were all a bunch of amateurs, flying by the seat of our pants, changing things moment by moment, but we were all committed to Da Man and his message. The party hacks were all on the other side; they weren't running our show, and we didn't have to do things their way.

Tonight, the party hacks were large and in charge. It was evident from the way they gave orders. During the primary campaign, it was What Can You Do? What Do You Want To Do? Okay, Do It! Now, those people who wear neckties or union t-shirts or have the most buttons (not just Obama buttons, but Kerry and Gore and Clinton buttons--I asked one officious personage what she had against Dukakis or Mondale!) tell you Do This, Do That without inquiring into one's gifts or interests. It's as if by winning--nationwide, not alas in Pennsylvania--the crazy, whacky folks who made this movement a success have, in fact, lost control.

Yes, I'll continue working for Da Man, because I want more than anything to see him elected. I'll do what I'm told, even if a party hack, a suit or a union or a multi-buttoned nostalgist tells me to do it. Somehow, though, the fun has gone out of it. For tonight at least.

Manchester Office Opening last night!

Wow what a crowd! Over 150 supporters came to celebrate Senator Obama's 47th birthday and the official opening of the Manchester, New Hampshire Campaign for Change office. There were many special guest speakers including Democratic Chairman Raymond Buckley, Rep. Mike Brunelle, Jim Demers, Senate President Sylvia Larsen, Sen. Lou D'Allesandro, and Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter.

The walls were covered with signs from all the Democratic candidates: Obama, Jeanne Shaheen, and Carol Shea-Porter. Sign-up sheets on the back wall were filled with people signing up to volunteer, write letters to the editor, and house out-of-state volunteers.

The theme of the night was the urgency of everyone to get involved to support the coordinated effort to turn New Hampshire blue and elect all the Democrats down the ballot. Mr. Buckley noted the power of this campaign and the excitement of everyone who was involved during the primaries and the importance of the great state of New Hampshire in deciding the outcome of the 2008 Presidential election. The time is now! Get involved.

This morning I decided to check out the Obama New Mexico site for possible news from Las Vegas, New Mexico. Last time I checked was when openings of several NM offices were announced for Saturday, August 2. Las Vegas was not among them. But, today there is a symbol on the map for Las Vegas, and a listing for a local office. I looked the place over ASAP, and it is on the absolute busiest street in town. Once some big signs go up, the Obama campaign will finally be visible in Las Vegas, NM. Hooray!

Beaverton and the Campaign For Change

Last Thursday, Beaverton welcomed the Campaign for Change to Washington county with the official office opening potluck. Over 300 supporters stopped by to take part in the festivities and find out how they could help bring real change to their community and make Barack Obama the next President of the United States. Field Organizers Caleb Hayes and Alejandro Hoekstra have been hard at work engaging with the community in voter registration drives for several weeks, and the opening part gave supporters a chance to hear how the Campaign is active in Washington county and across Oregon.

Supporter Astrid Harmon describes the event: "People from all backgrounds came to celebrate and over 100 signed up to volunteer. The excitement and enthusiasm even translated to the street, where hundreds of cars honked and gave a thumbs up to the Obama volunteers waving signs."

The crowd listened as special guests State Senator Suzanne Bonamici and State Representative Larry Galizio spoke.

Yesterday I visited the Bozeman field office. Sadly, I missed the office opening, but I took some pictures of the office itself, and of Megan, the field director there.

They've really done an excellent job decorating the new office, especially considering that it was previously the Bozeman DMV. The office is located at 19 N. 10th Ave. Bozeman, MT.

The advantage of Main Street is that it has a large amount of commuter traffic and the available locations are clearly visible from the road. Other locations in Woodstock are no where near as visible as they are hidden or positioned far back from the street. Please consider Main St. in Woodstock as your location as it will cast a shadow on the Right Wing Tavern and send a clear message to the republican party, that we are here and we are proud.

An Afternoon in Adams County, PA

I spent Monday afternoon volunteering at the Gettysburg campaign office, learning about the issues that are important to Central Pennsylvanians and making more thna 60 phone calls to local residents in their 60s, 70s, and older. Most of the calls were pleasant and I spent as much as 15 minutes talking to folks about their thoughts on the election. I was surprised that most people are still undecided, even after more than a year of the campaign. Hearing how many people aren't sure they can trust anyone after the current administration was certainly disappointing. Still, there were several visitors to the office while I was there and they all were eager to purchase buttons and bumper stickers or find out how they can get involved.

Living only an hour away from Pennsylvania, this was a fairly easy way to contribute. If you live near PA too, I hope you'll consider paying a visit. The volunteer at the Gettysburg office is named Matt Armstrong and he was very welcoming. Some of the offices have a paid Obama campaign staffer but small offices like Gettysburg run purely on volunteers. I suggest you bring warm clothing (there was no heat at this office!), a headset if you like to use them while making calls (the office has prepaid cell phones for you to use), and any extra campaign literature or signs you have from prior campaigning. You might also bring some snacks or treats to share with fellow volunteers and leave behind for the next crew. These are sparse places and all contributions are appreciated.

If you can travel on a weekend, then add sturdy shoes to your checklist and plan to do some canvassing. Weekday shifts are mainly phone calling. Of course, there are signups for the final weekend and day before the April 22nd primary election when they will need all hands on deck.

Anyone in my area (Montgomery County, Maryland) who would like to drive North to Adams County, here is the contact information for that office.

Drive North on I-270 beyond Frederick, Continue North on Route 15 into PA, Exit onto Route 116/Hanover Street, Turn Left onto Route 116/Hanover Street. At the square, go 3/4 the way around (essentially turning left) onto Baltimore Street. After about four blocks, turn Right onto High Street. The office is three blocks down on the right side. Park along the street or in the lot across the road.

The office is officially open T/W/Th 11-2, weeknights 5-9, Saturdays 11-4, and Sundays 1-4. If you want to come up any other time, call in advance and someone will meet you. Hey Austin!

I hope you're all Fired Up about the campaign HQ opening/precinct captain training today. I'm stuck at work, so I decided to stop by yesterday to get some volunteering in. I showed up at around 7:00 with two dozen doughnuts, and spent most of my time cleaning/clearing offices for yet-to-arrive paid campaign staff and sorting things (mostly computer/phone equipment) that had been shipped in from the offices in various Super Tuesday states. I worked for nearly three hours, 'till pretty much everything that could have been done was done and we called it a night. Oh yea, and I took some pictures. Enjoy these tasty previews of the office. Columbus Ohio Headquarters Opening Soon

I know there is a great hunger for this info out there and lots of questions being asked.So... the date is TENATIVE, but the Columbus Headquarters is HOPING to open this wednesday, 2/13/08. The office is at 193 E Rich St. Please check the Ohio page on barackobama.com for updates and to be sure of the opening before heading down expecting them to put you to work.As soon as they are ready for volunteers to sign up for jobs, they will let us know. We have the Obama website for communication, as well as a broad database of volunteers that we have been collecting contact info on for the past year.I am SO inspired to see SO many people inspired by Senator Obama!Volunteers ROCK!Thanks All!Obama '08!

When I first got involved in Sen. Obama's Campaign, the group's only real goal was to get an office in Tennessee. At the time it seemed like a monumental task, that we would never get it done. Today, I am so happy...the day is here.

The campaign saw a movement and is supporting it with reinforcements, NO OTHER CAMPAIGN has come to TN and done that, and TN has raised less that $300,000 total for Obama's Campaign (out of 80 MILLION). It's not because we are a cash cow for him, it's not because he will swing the state in the General election, it's because we have organized, and requested help in continuing to spread the message...it's because of you, and the potential that each one of you have to change this country.

So come on out, and meet your fellow supporters...come get inspired!

Obama Idaho Headquarters Grand Opening a Huge Success!

Our Idaho headquarters office opening happened on November 1, but seeing pictures and media accounts of the opening is probably still of interest to many people. Check out this post by Brett Adler, one of our core volunteers:

"The grand opening of the Idaho Headquarters of the Obama for America campaign was a huge success!

Nearly 100 supporters, community leaders, and elected officials gathered to support the opening of our Idaho Campaign Headquarters. They toured our office, met our staff, and signed up to get involved. Speakers included District 19 Rep. Nicole LeFavour, Obama For America Western Caucus States Director Ray Rivera, and Obama for America Idaho Field Director Joey Bristol. Ray flew in from Colorado just for this event and Joey, a native of eastern Washington, recently moved here to lead our efforts to win the caucus in February. We also heard from Boise locals TJ Thomson and "ObamaMama" Kassie Cerami, who both played a vital role in turning our local grassroots efforts into an official campaign headquarters.

Yesterday was my first day at the Obama field office in Des Moines as an intern. It was such a great time! Everyone there is just like Obama: super friendly, outgoing, and full of life. I can tell that it's going to be a great road to the White House for the team.

A lot of people ask me why I support Barack Obama so much. Is it becauseof his stands on education? Is it because of his healthcare plans? Is it because he doesn't support the war at all?

I bet the commencement speeches are filled with rosy pictures and the graduation parties flowing with cash. Sorry the "older" folks are doing that- it is not reality.

But really- now what? Those from high school will be told- go to college- get a degree! And if you have that degree you will be told- get a decent job with benefits.
