Give Barack the tools he will need to govern; elect progressives to Congress

While it's important not to look too far past the upcoming election fight against John McCain, one aspect of that fight will be sending more qualified Democrats to Congress to help President Obama enact his policy and give Americans the real change they are clamoring for.

One candidate it is my pleasure to call to your attention is seeking to oust Alabama Republican U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions, who is about as old-guard and wrong-headed as they come. The name of the woman who will dismiss Sessions is Vivian Davis Figures, and I predict she may just be the "next" Barack Obama.

Mrs. Figures comes from a mixed African-American/Creole/Cajun/Cherokee background and has worked her way up from poverty. Her mother did not know how to read, yet Mrs. Figures has a degree in management science from the University of New Haven.

Like Barack, Mrs. Figures worked as a community organizer after leaving college, while attending law school. She ran a summer lunch program for Mobile Community Action, providing nutritious meals for poor children, and also directed a foster-grandparents program.

She helped run an African-American-oriented weekly newspaper called New Times in Mobile, Ala, where she was born in the waning days of Jim Crow and went on to become an outstanding member of that Deep South city's city council.

She was married to Michael Figures, a prominent Mobile attorney who became perhaps the state's most successful African-American politician, rising to the post of president pro tempore of the state Senate before being struck down by a brain aneurysm in 1996.

Widowed at the age of 39 with three young sons, Mrs. Figures won election to her husband's senate seat with 87 percent of the vote, and has amply improved on his legacy. She is known for standing up for her principles while knowing how to compromise to achieve progress. Her sister describes her as a "quiet storm" who gets things done without losing respect from her friends and colleagues in both political parties.

She has been particularly active in the service of aid to the homeless of Alabama, to women suffering from breast cancer and to those seeking to drastically Alabama's high illiteracy rate.

What makes her a particularly attractive candidate, though, is that her beliefs are grounded in the old-fashioned notion that a senator is a servant of the people who voted to put her in office, not of the elite and well-connected insiders in Washington who pay to get favors from government that hurt the rest of us.

She has developed a reputation for sticking to her guns. When the white mayor of Mobile wouldn't consider appointing even one black department head {in a town that's about half African-American and has been for most of the 300 years it has existed}, Mrs. Figures refused to ratify any of the mayor's appointments until he changed his mind. In a closely divided council, her refusal held sway and the mayor came around to her way of thinking.

Mrs. Figures reminds me in some ways of Barack back when he was seeking his Senate seat. He did not have the name recognition of his Democratic rivals, nor the financial resources of his Republican opponents, yet he had the truth on his side and the ability to tell it so that folks who might not normally be attracted to his candidacy became ardent supporters.

She was against the war in Iraq when it was not popular to say so. She spoke out against the whole charade on the floor of the Alabama Senate and defeated an attempt by the Republican-dominated House to express official support for Bush's warmaking. She was careful to draw the distinction between opposing the war and supporting the warriors, who after all, only go where they are sent.

She has voiced frustration with President Bush's "No Child Left Behind" policies, which she admits were successful only to the extent that no children got ahead, either.

Jeff Sessions has amassed $4 million to fund his re-election effort, while Mrs. Figures has roughly $100,000. She could use some help from progressive donors, but she will use Sessions' financial advantage against him.

"He's big business and super-rich. That's who he represents," she told the Birmingham News last month. "He has been someone who has marched in lock-step with George Bush in taking us into war in Iraq and into recession at home. He does not think for himself. He is not his own man and it's time we give this seat back to the everyday working people of Alabama."

It is indeed time. Let's hope she can do it, and let's hope the Obama campaign extends her a hand up to help her help us.

[To hear Mrs. Figures in her own words, you might look at this Q-and-A session posted on YouTube last year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOqgDl9A1RY

She doesn't really get going until about six minutes into the video, but when she does, look out Jeff Sessions!]

Obama Goes Mobile

From Clickz (a marketing blog -- link below):

>>>If You Build It, They Will Come

Barack Obama's overall digital communications strategy is grounded in a <a href="http://origin.barackobama.com/" target="_blank" onclick="s_objectID="http://origin.barackobama.com/_1";return this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true">well-designed Web site. However, keep in mind how you maintain contact with your audience when you refresh your site. For instance, after last week's win in the Iowa caucus, the Obama site got a refresh to capitalize on the momentum moving into the New Hampshire primaries. This refresh has moved the "Obama Everywhere" links well below the fold, making it difficult for supporters to gain awareness about how they might further interact with the candidate across digital and mobile platforms. If you update your site, remember to make it easy for your audience to follow you.

The Obama campaign has taken the idea of mobile connectedness a step further by establishing and maintaining a <a href="http://twitter.com/barackobama" target="_blank" onclick="s_objectID="http://twitter.com/barackobama_1";return this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true">Twitter profile. Twitter is a prime example of the microblogging trend that resulted from the concept of status updates. It's also a great way to take advantage of the principles behind social networking and the mobile platform. By signing up to "follow" Obama on Twitter, you receive SMS (<a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/short_message_service.html" target="_new" onclick="s_objectID="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/short_message_service.html_1";return this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true">define) updates (your account can also be accessed online) that primarily revolve around mood, location, and upcoming events. It's a great way for supporters to feel like they are in the know and an opportunity for the campaign to send subtle reminders about upcoming debates or rally locations.

Simply put, the <a href="http://origin.barackobama.com/mobilev2/" target="_blank" onclick="s_objectID="http://origin.barackobama.com/mobilev2/_1";return this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true">Obama mobile strategy is innovative and well executed. Frankly, it's so well executed that marketers should be jealous. It proves those who are willing to take a bit of a leap are often rewarded handsomely. Obama's building a base of voters who look beyond traditional means of communication for interaction and information. He's satisfying that same base by integrating multiple cross-channel communication platforms. While there's always room for improvement, there's indeed a lesson for mobile marketers in the Obama strategy.<<<

http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3628057

Text Message Update From NYC Rally!

We received over 400 text responses during the NYC Rally directly to Obama Mobile (62262). People of all ages were truly inspired by Barack's speech tonight and are texting us their thoughts on the rally from their phones as they head home. Here are a few of the best ones so far:

+Sheila from Brooklyn, NY texted in “It was the best! I told Barack that I am a 60 yr old woman that wants her America back and I am putting all of my faith in him.. He said we will get it back!”

+Stanley texted, “It was awesome. I'm a high school student, and in coming to the rally, it has opened up my eyes on what the nation will be missing out on if he's not elected."

+Jack in Manhattan texted, “Finally an actual politician that makes me feel as proud to be an American as Jed Bartlet did on The West Wing.”

+Michelle from Brooklyn texted, “The September 27th rally in Washington Sq was informative, but more importantly inspiring. Hope for a better future is an invaluable gift Barack gives us.”

+Evan from Manhattan texted “It was amazing! Barack's ability to give a speech and control a crowd is incredible. He brings qualities to a Presidential race that we haven't seen in my lifetime!"

+And an another supporter texted, “I'm proud to say that the first election I will be old enough to vote in is the one with the most promising candidate since JFK.”

Keep the messages coming in. Text us your name your city and your thoughts to 62262.

Take Barack's Message With You

A few days ago we launched a mobile text messaging program. Not only can you sign up for texts, you can also download wallpaper and ringtones for your cellphone (try texting ringtone1 to OBAMA).

The ringtones are an innovative way to get Senator Obama’s message out there. As John Della Volpe, director of polling at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics and founder of SocialSphere Strategies, puts it the ringtone is “going to create conversations.” When it plays while you are out in public and someone asks you about it, just ask them to text GO to OBAMA and they will get more information about Senator Obama.

We hope you will find these ringtones fun and enjoyable. For those times when your cell might ring out at an inopportune moment, such as class, I suspect that teachers might be a bit more lenient when they realize that its public policy and civic participation coming out of your cellphone.

Jon Stewart has gotten the Obama ringtone fever ( Daily Show clip). Shortly after our launch he did a hilarious segment highlighting the new ringtones in a variety of means from referencing a bus equipped with spinning rims adorned with Obama logos to Stewart himself dancing to the beats. Stewart’s glowstick dance moves paired with Obama’s ringtones must have been a hit –downloads of the ringtones doubled following the show’s airing.

Mobile Incorporated into the Obama Campaign

There needs to be more of a mobile component incorporated into the campaign. A few ideas that come to mind include:

*Reminders sent via TXT 12 hours before an event starts

*Blogging or Discussing via Wireless Web (more efficient than coming all the way home to post)

*Barackobama Mobile Site & experience for users without computer/Internet (33% OF THE AMERICAN POPULATION)

*Donate via Mobile (Charge to Your Phone Bill)

*Pass Along Content sent via Mobile

These are the top 5 I'd implement.

TECHNOLOGY STRATEGIES Obama 2008

Obama 2008 Web Marketing Campaign
TECHNOLOGY STRATEGIES

I have visited Senator Obama’s website before attending the rally today in Atlanta. I must say that his web team has made exceptional use of technology to get his message across. The clarity and media does an excellent job of information design. But there is yet another level he can elevate his message and fund raising efforts. Obama Store

Affiliates…
Give supporters the opportunity to sell Obama paraphernalia from their websites. How an Affiliate Program Works

Affiliate joins Obama affiliate program through the sign up page.

Affiliate logs into the member area, obtains the code for store banners, rich media ads, product buy text links, etc. in order to link to the Obama store.

Visitor clicks through from the affiliate’s web site to Obama web site.

Software code tracks the visitor as they browse Obama site.

Visitor makes a purchase

Tracking system associates the sale with the affiliate's visitor and records the transaction.

The Affiliate receives sales report by email.

Obama site provides recognition rankings of leading Affiliates.

Obama Download…
Allow supporters to download web marketing paraphernalia and collateral to use in their social networking, personal, or business web sites. Obama Downloads would offer these resources but also allow talented supporters to contribute their approved designs for others to download. Social Networking MySpace and Facebook are the most popular social networking sites with a combined 83 million unique visitors in February of this year. Social Networking downloads will allow supporters to use the following for their pages.

Layout library (templates with Obama 08 message and media)

Codes widgets (polls, referrals, voter registration, etc.)

Codes for embedded media (audio, video, images and podcast)

Store affiliate links and buy buttons

These resources would be designed to be easily integrated with social networking sites.

Web Sites
Beyond social networking sites, business and personal websites can also utilize the above downloads with the exception of Layouts.
