There are just four days left before Election Day and the campaign's Get Out the Vote effort is running on all cylinders to ensure that Barack is elected on November 4th.

Tomorrow, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean will make stops in St. Cloud and Minneapolis to rally supporters to "Get Out the Vote" over the next few days.

Governor Dean will campaign for Barack Obama, Al Franken, Elwyn Tinklenberg and other DFL candidates. He’ll appear alongside Tinklenberg, state Senate Assistant Majority Leader Tarryl Clark, Thomasin Frankin, Mayor RT Rybak, and Rep. Keith Ellison.

This weekend will be the biggest on the ground effort of the campaign. It's the weekend before Election Day and we need all of our supporters on the ground in their community helping us to win the election.

Our on the ground effort in Minnesota has been incredible this past five months. Organizers are working day and night to win Minnesota, a must-win state for the Obama campaign. But to pull it off, they're counting on the time, energy, and passion of Obama supporters across the state who share their commitment to Barack's message of change.

Just check out this interview with Jeff Blodgett, the Obama campaign's Minnesota state director about the Campaign for Change's "Get Out the Vote" operation:

Earlier today, I had the chance to talk for about a half an hour with Jeff Blodgett, the State Director for Barack Obama in Minnesota. Blodgett is the most distinguished DFL operative in Minnesota. In addition to being Paul Wellstone’s Campaign Manager, Blodgett was a senior adviser in the Klobuchar campaign, GOTV Director for the Kerry campaign in Minnesota and runs Wellstone Action, the not for profit group working to advance the causes that the late Sen. Wellstone fought for during his time in public life.

Blodgett gave me a run down of the Obama campaign’s GOTV plans in Minnesota. If I had to describe the effort in one word, it would be “wow.”

First things first, if you are not yet signed up to help during this last week, go to www.gotvforchange.com right now. You can enter your zip code and find the campaign action center closest to you, even sign up for a specific shift.

Now onto the nitty gritty details. With Blodgett in charge, you will not be surprised to find out that the Obama campaign in Minnesota has been heavily focused on a grassroots ground game. Since June 1, the Obama campaign has had 1 million conversations with voters in Minnesota. That’s stunning.

But, as the saying goes, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

There are 37 Obama offices in Minnesota. During the last four days of the campaign, that will expand to 130 GOTV action centers spread out from Grand Marais to East Grand Forks to Worthington to La Cresent. Why the massive expansion? The campaign has to accommodate some 20,000 volunteers who have already committed to helping during those final days (including 10,000 who have already signed up to help on Election Day alone!) To put this in perspective, in 2004 the Kerry campaign had about 10,000 volunteers during the final GOTV period and 5,000 volunteers on Election Day.

That’s right – the Obama campaign has doubled what the Kerry campaign did in Minnesota just four years ago.

Its also worth noting that the 20,000 volunteers are just what the Obama campaign brings to the table – it doesn’t count the Franken volunteers, the Madia volunteers and all the other great DFL campaigns that will bring volunteers to the coordinated GOTV effort.

So what will this army of volunteers be doing? The Obama campaign has identified a universe of 500,000 sporadic and new voters who they think are likely to vote for the DFL ticket if they get to the polls. Each one of these 500,000 people will be contacted 4 to 6 times between now and Election Day. The vast majority of these contacts will be made through doorknocking, though phone banking will be used in rural areas.

People say this every campaign, but there is no doubt it is true this time around: this is the largest GOTV effort in Minnesota history.

Without a doubt, the strength we have in Minnesota is due to the people we have on the ground, talking to voters face-to-face about Barack and the importance of their vote.

Recently, State Rep. Erin Murphy sat down with Liz Carroll and Daithi Sproule before an evening performance in St. Paul for a "jam session" about the importance of this election.

Liz, the daughter of Irish immigrants, is one of the nation's most reverred Celtic musicians, often appearing with Daithi, who is an accomplished guitarist in his own right.

In Hibbing last night, Hillary Clinton drew on her years of public service and made a lucid observation on the choice Minnesotans have in this election.

This election is really coming down to one simple slogan. It's a slogan that embodies what Democrats stand for, what we fight for, what we believe: "Jobs, baby, jobs!" That's what it's about and that's why we need Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

With Democrats in the White House and in the Congress, we will end the tax breaks for shipping jobs overseas, we're going to start creating jobs in America again. We did it before and we can do it again.

Barack Obama has a plan to jumpstart the American economy, provide middle class tax relief, and provide quality, affordable healthcare to every American. This fact, and the reality that on every one of these issues John McCain is disturbingly out of touch with middle class families, was not lost on Hillary:

Senator McCain has repeatedly said that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong."

Well, maybe they are if you're looking through rose-colored glasses. But if you're living with both feet on the ground

and you're going in and out of people's homes and you're listening to what's on your minds, there isn't any way you could reach that conclusion.

But to George Bush and John McCain the middle class isn't fundamental, it's ornamental. They don't understand that if you don't have a strong and prosperous middle class, we will not have a strong and prosperous America.

"The evidence is clear," continued Hillary, a champion for working families in her own right, "Barack Obama and the Democrats are for you. And that's why I hope you will be for the DFL candidates up and down the ballot to delivver the change we need."

Folks in Minnesota are struggling to cope with a failing economy and looking for real leadership from the next President. Since President Bush has taken office, health care costs have risen 4.3 times faster than average wages in Minnesota, and over 430,000 Minnesota residents – and over 45 million nationally – lack health insurance today.

The situation in Minnesota is just a microcosm of what's happening across the country, a situation which will only get worse if John McCain is allowed to continue the failed policies of the last eight years.

That's why we have to take action to prevent that from happening:

There isn't anybody who really thinks we could survive the next 4 years if they're like the last 8 years and recognize our country. The income inequality will continue to expand, people will start losing their hope and their belief in the American dream.

I know that you probably have friends and even families, coworkers and neighbors who are not yet decided; who may even be thinking of voting for the McCain-Palin ticket.

That dog don't hunt anymore. You can't keep rewarding the same bad policies and expect to get anything better.

"So I hope each and everyone of you will go out and talk to those who are yet undecided. Maybe try to persuade those you think are heading in the wrong direction," added Hillary.

Focus on the Issues: Women's Issues

Barack Obama has led as a champion of women’s rights – from advocating fair pay, to preventing violence against women, to protecting the right to choose.

Despite decades of progress, American women still make only 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. Barack supported the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which would allow women to sue for pay discrimination if they discovered they were paid less because of their gender. Barack will also help women in the workplace by expanding paid sick leave, giving women the ability to take a few days to stay home if their children get sick.

Barack has been a tireless advocate of preventing violence against women. Barack introduced legislation to combat domestic violence by providing services to families affected by domestic violence. Barack also supported the landmark Violence Against Women Act, originally sponsored by Joe Biden, which establishes sexual assault services programs and helps police and communities combat domestic abuse.

Finally, Barack is committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose, and is a strong supporter of Roe v. Wade. He co-sponsored legislation to expand access to contraception, health information and preventive services to help reduce unintended pregnancies.

John McCain’s record speaks for itself on women’s issues. McCain wants to overturn Roe v. Wade and would ban all abortions – even in cases of rape or incest. McCain has opposed number domestic violence bills, including the Violence Against Women Act, which has saved the lives of countless women. And McCain opposed legislation that would help women receive equal pay for equal work.

But don’t take our word for it -- do your research. The facts speak for themselves: Barack is the smart choice for America's women.

Barack has been campaigning for 20 months now. For 20 months he has traveled across the country, from state to state, talking to voters and talking about the change that he will bring to Washington. He'll continue traveling and campaigning over the next 16 days, but now it comes down to us.

When Michelle was in Minnesota last week, she explained to the gathered crowd that while Barack has gotten us 85% of the way there, the rest is up to us. We have to knock on doors, call voters, volunteer and most importantly, vote.

We are still in a fight, and the next weeks are going to be crucial to our Get Out The Vote effort. Which is why we need our supporters on the ground to be working as hard as they can over the next 17 days to win.

My wife Jill is an extraordinary woman.

Jill's passion has always been education, and even during the campaign she's been teaching class during the week and joining me on the trail on the weekends. But this week, she also found some time to go to campaign headquarters and call voters in crucial battleground states.

In the words of Senator Obama, the "Obama for America Campaign is a different type of campaign."

For the first time in campaign history, children ages 12 and under, have a place to go and actually vote—through their voice. What a great way to be introduced to politics and to express your support for Senator Obama.

The Superior Telegram talked with students in Ms. Krull’s fourth-grade class at Great Lakes Elementary School.

Here's what some of them had to say:

Matt:

I want Obama because he wants to cut taxes for the middle class and raise taxes for the higher class. With McCain, I don’t want Palin because she doesn’t have the best ideas I don’t think. And I like Obama because he wants to take troops out of Iraq. McCain wants to increase troops in Iraq.
Most important issues of election: change, the economy and the war in Iraq.

Blake:

I like Obama because I think he’ll be better for our country than McCain. I like McCain; I like his ideas, some of them, but I don’t think he has what it takes to be president. And if he dies, which he could any minute now, we have the Sarah Palin campaign going on. I don’t think she could really do it because she’s only been governor of Alaska for like two years. She doesn’t impress me that well.
[McCain] wants to unravel heath care. I don’t want another George Bush.
Most important issues of election: the economy.

Natalie:

I want Obama to be elected because he’s a democrat, and I’m kind of an independent. So is my mom, but my dad’s more of a democrat. But Obama, I think he’d be a better president because he stands for things that are a little better than McCain. McCain has good ideas, but not as good as Obama. He (Obama) wants to lower gas prices and help us with the economy and stuff. He wants to give heath insurance, so that’s why I like Obama.

The Obama campaign just announced that Hillary Clinton will campaign for Barack and Joe up on the Iron Range next week.

ST. PAUL – U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton will hold a public rally for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign next Tuesday evening on the Iron Range.
Sen. Clinton will speak with Minnesotans about her trust in Sen. Obama’s steady leadership and ability to turn around our economic crisis. Sen. Clinton will discuss the current crisis and the leadership required to bring the change we need.

More details will be announced in the coming days.

Hillary said it best in Scranton last week:

Barack Obama and Joe Biden are for you and that’s why I am for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

"Me and My Moma Are For Obama"

Last weekend, a group of "Mamas for Obama" used the my.barackobama.com grassroots organizing tool to set up a playdate with their kids at their neighborhood park.

From the beginning, this campaign has been about everyday people stepping up to make change happen in their own communities. As Barack said today in Londonberry, NH:

John McCain thinks this campaign is all about me – but the truth is, this campaign is about you. Your jobs. Your health care. Your retirement. Your children’s future. That’s what this election is about. That’s what I’m fighting for. Because I can take 3 more weeks of these attacks from John McCain, but the American people can’t take four more years of the same failed policies and the same divisive politics. That’s why I’m running for President of the United States.

Barack was raised by a single mother who put herself through school, followed her passion for helping others, and taught Barack that there are no barriers to success if you are willing to work for it.

His grandmother, who also helped to raise him, worked on a bomber assembly line during World War II. Michelle, Barack's wife, has been described as "the rock of the Obama family." She and Barack want their two daughters, Malia and Sasha, to grow up in an America where both work and family are part of the American Dream.

All of Barack's accomplishments have been made possible because of these women. And it is because of these women that Barack fights for women's rights. He fights for healthcare and education, support for working parents and an insistence on equality.

These are the issues that are important to the women who support Barack -- women who come from all types of backgrounds, and who are united by care for their families and their communities.

We can turn the page on the last eight years and create a better world for our children, but we need your help. By talking with your neighbors about Barack's plan for women and families you can help bring change to Minnesota and to America.

Change is coming! Enough is enough! I am tired of trying to make it from paycheck to paycheck only to find myself out of money before my next paycheck — struggling to get my sick child to his medical appointments in the Cities and putting food in his stomach, a roof over his head, clothes on his back and warmth in the cold. My child comes before me in anything! My needs are not being met because I am struggling to give him what he needs. One income in a household can’t possibly make ends meet. My husband works many overtime hours including Saturdays so we can try to make it. And it is not enough. I am disabled and can’t work, but I had to get a job this summer to help and then I find out that I am over-doing it and making myself weaker and sicker. I have had to set my illness aside and peel myself out of bed in the morning to go to work even if the pain is unbearable. I invite you to walk in my shoes for a while.

My husband and I have needs, too, but we have to put our needs aside to get our son what he needs and to pay the bills. You don’t see us together out in the evening because we can’t afford to go. We have lived here for six years now and we like our little town but we have yet to go out to the movies or to dine in one of the eateries or go to mingle with our friends and neighbors in our community because we can’t afford it. We don’t even have winter coat. But we don’t mind as long as our child has what he needs.

Our economy needs help, people that have invested their money or have 401(k)s (us included) can probably kiss their investments goodbye for now. Health insurance needs an overhaul so people with pre-existing conditions can still be covered and so that everyone can afford to have coverage. Social Security needs to be saved so when we retire it is there for us and our children. Medicare needs to be changed so all of our seniors and disabled can pay for their medications and see their doctors as needed. Something needs to be done so all of our children can go to college because college tuition and expenses are through the roof. Our children’s schools and education needs help. Something needs to be done with the meth, drug and alcohol problems that are a plague on our society. Do you want me to continue?

With all the promises that both candidates are making and lies about each other, who knows what and who to believe anymore. But I know one thing, I am and have been ready for a change!

"Our purpose today is to come together to contribute and contribute significantly to make sure Barack Obama is elected the next president of the United States."

With those words, Marian Moore opened up a night of musical entertainment, dance, and revelry at The Lab in Minneapolis hosted by Minnesota Artists for Obama.

[Tonight is the product of] three ordinary citizens who thought this election was too important to just stay on the sidelines and see what happens. So they put in their time and resources to make this happen.
The presidency for Barack Obama is within reach, and we have just 23 days. After that, the window's closed. What can we give and what can we do to make sure we wake up happy on November 5th?
We really can't afford another 4 years of an assault on everything that is good and that is beautiful in the world

The fundraiser, organized by Susan, Mary, and Jan, demonstrates the belief in the power of coming together at the grassroots level, a fundamental tenet of Barack's campaign for change.

The 250 folks who gathered to show their support for Barack, enjoyed musical performances by Adam Levy of the Honeydogs, Prairie Home Companion regulars Prudence Johnson and Dan Chouinard, and John Munson and Matt Wilson of The Twilight Hours. Rhythmic Circus, a local tap dancing troupe, also performed.

Jeff Blodgett, the Obama campaign's Minnesota State Director, spoke with passion about Barack Obama:

The McCain campaign keeps asking the question, "Who is Barack Obama?"
But we know who he is, we know the answer. We know that Barack Obama is a man who has devoted his entire life to his community, his country, and that he will be a president who will make the economy work for the American people again.
Barack Obama is someone who has tapped into something we're feeling right now in this room--people are ready for change. They're tired of divisive politics and people want real leadership.
And while some want to create fear by asking these questions, our campaign here in Minnesota is focused on talking to people about the issues. Because that's what the people want to hear--what is the next president going to do to help me and my family?
Minnesotans deserve better than they're getting from John McCain and his campaign.
And on November 4th, we're going to make sure they get it.

From day one, this campaign has been driven by the everyday people, like Susan, Mary, and Jan, who, instead of sitting idly by, stood up and acknowledged their responsibility to make change happen in their community.

Reflections on Canvassing

Last week, we posted a video of two friends, Anya & Emily, canvassing in Minneapolis.

Both Anya and Emily have made a personal commitment to volunteer for at least three hours each week to make sure Barack wins Minnesota on November 4th.

In front of a crowd of more than 4500 in St. Paul yesterday, Michelle Obama said that, for her, this is not just politics. "It's personal. It's personal for me, it's personal for all of us now."

Hard-working people who don't want government to solve all their problems. Folks in this country aren't asking for much. They just want to be able to do what my dad did for me -- get up, go to work every day and earn a decent living.

And from my vantage point, as a wife, as a mother, as a daughter, the choice is clear. There's only one candidate who is speaking at all to the issues that I care about.

Michelle's story is the American story. Michelle grew up on the South Side of Chicago, attended public schools, and took used scholarships and loans to pay her way through college and law school. After a few years practicing corporate law, she returned to the South Side of Chicago to give back to the city she loves and to help others serve their communities as the executive director of a non-profit.

Michelle reminded folks that Barack was raised by a single mother and his grandparents. And while they didn't have much money, they taught him to believe in the promise of America.

I can't speak for anyone else, but Barack Obama gets it. And he doesn't get it in some philosophical, theoretical way. He gets it because he's lived it.

"Don't we deserve leaders who get it?" asked Michelle.

Michelle will speak with Minnesota voters about the everyday challenges that working families face as our economy worsens, following eight years of failed economic policies. She will share her perspective on the clear choice voters have in this election between change and more of the same.

Michelle will discuss Barack and Joe's long records of standing up for women and families, and their commitment to reversing the last eight years of economic policies that put the special interests ahead of hardworking American families.

DFL challenges McCain health care plan

There’s been a concerted, and apparently nationwide, effort by the campaign of presidential candidate Barack Obama to focus attention on the health care reform plan offered by Republican nominee John McCain.

In Mankato, Obama was represented by state Sen. Kathy Sheran of Mankato and state House Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Paul Thissen of Minneapolis. The two Democrats said Obama’s plan is similar to proposals developed by a bipartisan group of stakeholders in Minnesota while McCain’s plan is a radical deregulation of the current health care system.

“This is an issue that’s truly a defining difference (between the presidential contenders),” Thissen said.

Today, the Obama-Biden campaign released a new 30 second TV ad, “Taketh”, which highlights healthcare in the debate last night. In the ad, which features footage from the debate, Obama tells Americans the truth about John McCain’s healthcare plan, explaining that McCain pays for his tax credit by taxing your health care benefits, for the first time ever. "So what one hand giveth," Barack explained last night, "the other hand taketh away.”

"Taketh" will air across the country on national cable beginning today.

Change means: Healthcare for All Americans

Healthcare is an issue that many Americans care about. Parents worry about having insurance that covers their children, seniors worry about being able to pay for prescriptions and others worry about having pre-existing conditions.

Jane from St. Paul shared her story:

I am 41 years old with two kids and my husband is an assistant principal at a charter school. The premiums for his plan would be over $800 a month. We have small health issues that make us unattractive to the health insurers found on ehealth.com.
So we are covered under MN comprehensive health plan and pay over $500 a month for just me and the boys and we each have a $1,000 deductible. I haven't been to the doctor in 4 years because we simply can't afford to pay for a doctor because all of our money is going to pay for premiums on a policy with a huge deductible.
My children have asthma and average one or two visit a month between the two of them at $80 a visit. So on average we spend between $650-750 a month on health care and I receive no care at all!

Barack's plan provides affordable, accessible healthcare for all Americans, builds on the existing healthcare system, and uses existing providers, doctors and plans to implement the plan. Under the Obama-Biden plan, patients will be able to make health care decisions with their doctors, instead of being blocked by insurance company bureaucrats. Under the plan, if you like your current health insurance, nothing changes, except your costs will go down by as much as $2,500 per year.

Barack will require insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions so all Americans regardless of their health status or history can get comprehensive benefits at fair and stable premiums. He will create a new Small Business Health Tax Credit to help small businesses provide affordable health insurance to their employees.

A healthcare plan that promotes public health and looks out for ordinary Americans is the change Washington needs.

Today the Minnesota Women’s Press endorsed Barack Obama for president and Joe Biden for vice president.

It is the first time the Women’s Press has ever endorsed a presidential candidate. Among several reasons, the outlet cited the Obama-Biden ticket’s commitment to issues important to women and all Americans, including:

Economic justice
Education, with a strong investment in public education
Healthcare, with a commitment to affordable healthcare for all

Before I get to the activities we have lined up this week I want to take a moment to discuss Barack Obama’s huge victory in Friday’s debate.

What you saw on Friday was the past versus the future. While John McCain offered more of the same failed policies of the last 8 years, Barack Obama demonstrated the vision and judgment to be Commander in Chief and outlined his plan to pursue 21st Century policies in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to reinvigorate our alliances.

And while the focus of the debate was foreign policy and national security both candidates addressed the current economic crisis. Barack Obama again showed that he will be a fierce advocate for the middle class while John McCain couldn’t escape his record on the economy – which is just more of the Bush policies that have been a disaster for American families.

This week the campaign will continue to carry the message of change on the economy throughout the nation and across Minnesota. This week, the contrast between the candidates’ on health care will come into sharp focus. Barack Obama has a plan for universal, affordable health care – with no one left out. Barack Obama is committed to turning the page on the failed politics of yesterday's health care debates and working toward a 21st century health care system. Under Obama’s plan, those with health insurance can expect their costs to go down as much as $2,500, and those without health insurance will have a choice of new, affordable health insurance options.

John McCain’s plan will impose taxes on workers’ health care benefits for the first time in history and could force up to 20 million people from their current plan.

Obama Supporters Cheer Breast Cancer Walkers

Members of Minnesota Women for Obama were up bright and early this morning to cheer on participants in the Susan G. Komen 3-day Walk for Breast Cancer.

As part of the Women's Week of Action, a group of Obama supporters stood at the 25 mile marker with "Women for Obama" rally signs and offered words of encouragement and handed out Women for Obama buttons and stickers to the run/walkers.

Minnesota Women for the Change We Need: Duluth

As its third day draws to a close, the Minnesota Women's Week of Action is revving up for an exciting, event-filled weekend.

Up in Duluth today, a group of Women for Obama who couldn't make it down to Minneapolis for the Rally to Restore the Economy, decided to get together and show their support for Barack on a highly-trafficked street corner.

Here's how Joan, one of the enterprising women described the day:

We had about a dozen women at the corner and had a great time. Many many cars and people went by cheering for us and honking and giving the thumbs up. Passers by even came to stand with us and one woman had her boyfriend take a picture of her with our signs. We had signs that said: Hockey moms for Obama (I put mine on a hockey stick), Community Organizers for Obama, Moms for Obama, Obama Grandmas, People of Faith for Obama.

We have decided that we are going to stand on at least one busy street corner every Friday until Election Day with our signs. If it takes off, we plan to add more locations and maybe more days as the election gets closer. It was a great time.

We were energized and got good response. I hope we can get more people and then try some other sites. We will keep the signs positive.

Online Video Conversation with Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton Tonight

As part of the Obama campaign’s “Women for the Change We Need Week of Action,” Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton got together for a conversation with women on the issues that are most important to them. The conversation, one of the largest women’s web forums in history, will be broadcast to tens of thousands of women across the country.

Women across the country will be able to watch the address online and hear about Senator Obama’s record on the issues of concern to women. Topics that will be covered will range from, equal pay for equal work, reproductive health, expanding the Family Medical Leave Act, to protecting Social Security. In remembrance of the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Senator Obama released the following statement:

Today, we honor the memory of the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001, and grieve with the families and friends who lost someone they loved in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We will never forget those who died. We will always remember the extraordinary efforts of our firefighters, police and emergency responders, and those who sacrificed their own lives on Flight 93 to protect their fellow Americans. And we give thanks for the Americans defending us every day in our communities at home, and in our military abroad.

On 9/11, Americans across our great country came together to stand with the families of the victims, to donate blood, to give to charity, and to say a prayer for our country. Let us renew that spirit of service and that sense of common purpose. Let us remember that the terrorists responsible for 9/11 are still at large, and must be brought to justice. Women on Wednesday Phonebank During the RNC

The Republican National Convention has women fired up and ready to talk to their friends and neighbors about Barack's plan to make the economy work for Minnesota's families again.

Last night, over 20 women were called women in their neighborhoods to share why they supported Barack and to invite them to join Minnesota Women for Obama.

There was a sense of urgency in the air, because the women understand that we have a real choice in this election. We can either choose a new direction for our economy, or we can keep doing what we’ve been doing.

Pat, a first-time phonebanker, explains:

I volunteered to help elect Barack Obama because I believe we need Barack as our next President--and I wanted to do something to help make that happen! We need to change Washington, and he's the one who can get that done.

I've always been politically involved but early on in my voting years, I was a Republican. As the Republican party moved further and further to the right, it left me behind along with countless others. I then counted myself an independent voter...but that left me feeling left out of the process....when the Democrats came calling in the past fifteen years, I knew it was the party I belonged in.

Barack Obama has further crystallized that for me...he believes much of what I believe and I honestly think he can bring the many parts of each of us together to make the most of this system we call democracy.

We need this change and we need it now. I tell my friends that Barack is every person, not black or white, not young or old, not male or female but a bit of each of us...and the very best of each of us.

In late 1959 I met John F. Kennedy. In 1968 I worked for his brother Bobby's campaign in Illinois and watched in horror as he, too, died for his ideals. I have not worked for a campaign since then, never feeling quite right about who was running. I watched with interest when John Kerry and John Edwards ran against Bush/Cheney. Although I really like one of the two, I still did not feel strongly enough to actually take the step of campaign work.

Now, I feel that there is truly a candidate out there who just might be the real thing. Someone who doesn't say the ""politically correct thing"" to win support; but rather tells it like it is. Someone who doesn't tone down how bad things really are getting here at home. Doesn't promise things he knows that he cannot deliver. An individual who really listens to what the small guy has to say, and then tries to do something about it.

Should this man win in November, he won't be able to carry the burden by himself. With the backing of the American public, and the leadership of Barack Obama, our homeland can become the beacon of the world that the world knew back in the 1960's. If you have any doubts or reservations, read his latest book.

I am ready to don the campaign hat once more.

Post-Bulletin: Hillary and Michelle prove women have the right stuff

The leading women of the Democratic Party have done their part.

Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton, slated as the featured speakers on the first two nights of the national convention, delivered a pair of speeches that came as close to fulfilling the hopes of the nominees and the party leaders as anyone could have imagined.

They raised the bar for Joe Biden and Barack Obama and signaled to John McCain that the level of professionalism on their side is so high that Republicans will have to stretch to match it.

For those who like to look past the immediate partisan stakes, the message of Monday and Tuesday night is really heartening. Never before has a national party entrusted to women the principal burden of setting the tone for the coming campaign by their domination of the first half of the convention. And rarely, if ever, have the expectations of the convention managers been so well fulfilled.

The phenomenon reflects what we sometimes forget is the revolution in higher education. Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton are products of elite law schools and the leading law firms of their cities, Chicago and Little Rock. It is not hard to imagine a future in which it will be rare for a political party to give major roles to mere men.

Obama's task was to provide her husband, the nominee, with a family story that could comfort and reassure the many voters who have trouble identifying with his exotic history and name. His own early autobiography, "Dreams from My Father, " set out to do that, but the complications of his mixed racial identity and his post-adolescent struggles to adjust probably created as many uncertainties as the book resolved.

Michelle Obama's narrative locates him (and herself) in a much more stereotypically "normal" working-class family environment. It may be over-sanitized but it certainly helps bridge the cultural and racial divides. And with their two young daughters on stage with their mother, it became really hard to resist being charmed.

Hillary Clinton faced a challenge more overtly political. I thought the pre-convention buzz about lingering tensions on the side of the Clintons was exaggerated. Neither here in Denver nor last week in New Hampshire did I find evidence supporting the polls that warned Democrats that many of Mrs. Clinton's supporters were ready to defect to McCain or shun the November voting.

Notwithstanding my skepticism, it became apparent over the weekend here that many arriving delegates had persuaded themselves that a word of encouragement from Hillary Clinton might be enough to send her supporters into open rebellion against Obama.

No such word was uttered on Tuesday night. Instead, Clinton provided a hearty endorsement of her erstwhile rival. Twice she referred without gagging to a future where "President Obama" would sign sweeping health care legislation and spur other reforms.

As for her supposed leanings toward McCain, Clinton declared, "No way, no how, no McCain." Clinton acknowledged her personal fondness for the Arizona senator but said that on all the issues that motivated her own campaign, "Barack Obama is my candidate," while McCain offers no relief from the policies of George W. Bush.

Clinton recalled some of the battered citizens she had met on the trail -- a wounded war veteran, an ailing single mother. And she challenged her own backers to ask themselves, "Were you in this campaign just for me?" Or were the needs of all these others part of the motivation?

Her message was clear: If you don't support Obama, as I am doing, you are being a lot more selfish than I am.

Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton are two impressive women -- and there are a lot more like them.

Statement of Senator Amy Kloubuchar on Selection of Gov. Sarah Palin

Senator Amy Klobuchar released the following statement regarding John McCain's selection of Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.

While I congratulate Sarah Palin on her selection as the vice presidential nominee, her addition to the Republican ticket changes very little about what a McCain-Palin ticket means for American families. McCain has still voted 90% with President Bush, and we simply can't afford four more years of the same failed policies. American families need real change - economic policies that benefit the middle class and a new approach to energy policy. It's been said that it's not just about gender, it’s also about an agenda - and there, American women know the choice is clear. The Obama-Biden ticket stands for the policies women have been fighting for, from equal pay to affordable health care. I know that Minnesotans will vote for change in November, and Barack Obama will be our next president.

Lois Quam: Why I, a Clinton supporter, will vote for Barack Obama

I was a strong supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton throughout the Democratic primaries.

As a woman, I am moved by her strength and courage in pounding 18 million cracks in that highest, hardest glass ceiling. As an American, I am inspired by her courage, passion and leadership.

And like Clinton, and the overwhelming majority of her supporters, I will vote for Barack Obama in November.

I support Obama because this country cannot endure four more years of the policies that have left us less safe in the world and suffering from a punishing economic downturn.

I support Obama because he has the judgment, the vision and the leadership to stand up for middle-class Minnesotans who are completely ignored by John McCain's "vision" for America.

And there are many more like me. This election is far too important to let slip away. McCain would be a disaster for America -- and specifically, for American women.

The idea that there is a cadre of Clinton supporters who will decide to choose more of the same failed policies by backing McCain simply isn't true. I have talked to my fellow Clinton supporters. We had a hard-fought primary, but today we are united behind Obama.

The reporting that has come from several Minnesota media outlets on this topic in recent days does not reflect reality. It attempts to stir up a story where none exists.

We support Obama because, as Clinton herself has said, he is ready to take on the serious challenges facing this country. He will stand up for working Minnesotans and end the war in Iraq safely and responsibly.

Obama has fought tirelessly on behalf of equal pay for women in the workplace. He was a cosponsor of the most critical equal pay legislation in the Senate this year, a bill that would have protected a woman's right to fight for equal pay in court. McCain opposed the bill.

Backstage Tonight: Kayla Whitaker of North Dakota

Kayla is a 20-year-old student and evangelical Christian who credits Barack for her newfound interest in the political process. Tonight, she will join Barack backstage before his acceptance speech.

"As a Christian, I have seen it repeated that evangelical Christians are 'required' to vote Republican. When I heard Barack's 'Call to Renewal' speech, I was surprised... This is change I can believe in and many other young, evangelical Christians can believe in, too. For the first time in my life, I got hooked on politics."

She now plans to register to vote so that she can cast her ballot for Barack in November. Among Kayla's top concerns are health care, teacher pay, and the environment. In an effort to convince her mom to become involved in politics, she has brought her to Denver.

"One More Lifted Voice"

For much of the past eight months, the only house on the 9600 block of Jonathan Lane in Eden Prairie with Barack Obama lawn signs was the Hill house.

Tori Hill, a first-time delegate from Minnesota to the Democratic National Convention, became enthusiastic about Obama after attending a rally in Minneapolis. "It was electric. It was just a madhouse. I began asking, 'How do you become a delegate?' How to you get involved in the campaign?'"

Now, she and her husband, Leon, and their three children, are in Denver, attending caucuses, participating in community-building and, for Tori Hill, participating in determining who the Democratic presidential nominee will be.

"The mere fact that I can show my kids in this lifetime that this can happen is amazing. I was raised that you could reach, that the sky is the limit," she said. "Leon and I raised the kids to try and make a difference in everybody's life and promote that you can be the best."

Tori Hill admits she can cry at the drop of a hat, but the prospect of having a hand in the history-making process of nominating the first black presidential candidate makes her especially emotional.

As a black woman, witnessing the speech of Michelle Obama on Monday also made her reflect on her own life.

"All women were sitting there, just thinking how proud they were of her," she said.

On the bus ride back to the delegate hotel with her son afterward, she reflected on what she had just seen.

"I was swelling up with emotions, I felt like I embodied everything that she said. That it is us," she said. "That it is my time to make a difference."

Senator Hillary Clinton took to the podium last night and delivered a resounding speech to the assembled delegates and to Americans across the nation.

About 30 Hillary supporters gathered in Edina last night to watch Hillary's speech and to learn how to get involved in Obama's Campaign for Change.

Hillary supporters sported shirts that read "Let's Make History (Again): Hillary Supporters for Obama" and were also given a chance to join Minnesota Women for Obama.

As one of the most groundbreaking candidates ever to run for the Presidency, Senator Clinton has inspired millions of women and men with her unyielding commitment to the causes that we all care so deeply about. This fact was not lost on Hillary supporters, many of whom wiped tears from their eyes as they listened to Hillary's speech and celebrated the historic nature of her campaign

There was no doubt among the Hillary supporters gathered about what we all must do to face the challenges ahead of us: unite behind Barack Obama and present a fully unified Democratic Party to the country and to the world.

Amy Klobcuhar, Women of the Senate Address the Convention

On the 88th Anniversary of women's suffrage, Minnesota's Amy Klobuchar joined other women of Congress in addressing the Democratic Convention in Denver. Senator Klobuchar spoke about knowing what it's like for working families in Minnesota and America as they struggle to make ends meet, and why it's so important that we elect Barack Obama our next President.

Below are her remarks.

I'm Amy Klobuchar from the great state of Minnesota.

My grandpa worked 1,500 feet underground in the iron ore mines of Ely, Minnesota. He never graduated from high school, but he and my grandma saved money in a coffee can to send my dad to college.

Today, it's getting harder for middle class families to make ends meet. Since 2001, the average family's income has fallen more than $1,000, but their expenses have gone up $4,500. It's a chunk of change, and it doesn't fit into a coffee can any more.

If we are going to protect the family checkbook, we need a president who'll fight for middle-class tax breaks and affordable health care and education.

This November, we can't afford more of the same. Let’s elect a president who looks out for the middle class, not the privileged class!

That's why the Democratic women of the Senate say the women of this country need Barack Obama and Joe Biden in the White House.

Minn Post: Klobuchar's Monday speech wins far-flung fan

Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar's Monday-night speech at the Democratic National Convention recieved great reviews from a delegate from the America Samoa.

From MinnPost:

DENVER — Sen. Amy Klobuchar has a (small) fan club — in American Samoa.

Marilyn Ah Ching, an American Samoa delegate to the Democratic National Convention, was wowed by Klobuchar's Monday speech, which lasted less than five minutes.

"Just hearing her speak, I could tell she is someone to watch for the future. She's going to get there.''

This testimonial came unsolicited.

What was there to like in such a brief time?

"She was real,'' said Ah Ching. "She didn't read the teleprompter. She spoke from the heart. She was different from the rest. I'm keeping my eye on her.''

By the way, there are only two flights a week leaving American Samoa for the mainland. It took Ah Ching almost three days to get from her home to Denver.

Here in Minnesota, Hillary supporters will be celebrating Women's Equality Day and honoring Senator Clinton's historic run with Convention Watching Parties.

Hillary supporters, like Jeanine pictured above, are uniting for change and rallying behind Barack Obama.

Yesterday, Minnesota Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher, assistant Senate Majority Leader Tarry Clark, and former Minnesota DFL Chair Rick Stafford, Hillary supporters during the primaries and Democratic National Convention delegates, released this joint statement:

My fellow delegates, are you fired up and ready to go? Are you tired of that subprime leadership in the White House? In 2006, people all across America voted for change in Washington. We took back the Senate. We took back the House, and now, in 2008, it’s time to complete that change and put Barack Obama into the White House.

I arrived in Washington in a little different style than some of the other Senators. Unlike the senator from Arizona, my family doesn’t have a private jet. I left Minnesota with my husband and our daughter and loaded up our Saturn with our college dishes and a shower curtain from 1985.

We were barely out of our driveway when I got a call from a certain senator from Illinois, Barack Obama. We weren’t even sworn in yet, and he was already determined to break the lock the lobbyists had on Washington. By the time we got to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Barack had all the new senators on a call, and by the time we got to Washington, we had an ethics reform plan in place.

Within months, he had marshaled support on both sides of the aisle, and it became the law of the land. No more golf junkets to Scotland. No more gifts of caviar. No more special discount flights on corporate jets. No more fast track between Capitol Hill and K Street. We said it’s time to stop the insiders’ no-bid military contracts. We said drug company lobbyists shouldn’t be able to prescribe our health care and that never again will federal energy policy be made from an undisclosed location.

They say that inertia is the most powerful force in the political universe. They say you can’t change Washington. Barack Obama has already started, and he’ll finish the job as president of the United States.

At another time in our history, when our nation was hurting and yearning for hope, President Franklin Roosevelt proved that democracy works best when Washington puts the American people first. “I never forget,” he said, “that I live in a house owned by all the American people and that I have been given their trust.” My fellow delegates, it’s time to elect a president America can trust. It’s time for the American people to take back their White House. It’s time for change we can believe in. It’s time for Barack Obama.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Joe Biden's Selection as VP Nominee

“Minnesotans will love Joe Biden. He’s a regular guy from a working middle-class family who has never owned a home in Washington. In fact, he takes the train home to his wife and family in Delaware every night. He’s both down to earth and incredibly well-respected around the world.

“I was particularly proud to work with Joe when he led the fight to fund 100,000 new police officers on the streets across the country, which for Minnesota has made a big difference in lowering the crime rate. Barack Obama said he wasn’t looking for a yes man, and by picking Joe Biden he adds to the ticket someone who has independent judgment and will truly help him bring change to this country.”

Rochester Post-Bulletin: Obama brings fire back to 75-year-old

This morning's Rochester Post-Bulletin includes this story about a 75-year-old Caledonia woman who is fired up about Barack's candidacy:

Back in the day, Julia Massman knew them all. She had shaken their hands and heard them speak at state conventions -- political leaders like Wendy Anderson and Rudy Perpich and Hubert Humphrey.

Then the Caledonia woman fell away from active involvement in the DFL Party and stayed away for years. Then she began to feel her political soul stirred again.

Though she had never been a national delegate or even tried to be, Massman campaigned actively at the DFL district convention in Albert Lea to be a national delegate. She won it on the basis of a speech she delivered at the district convention that included this simple declaration:

"I'm a 75-year-old, Irish, Catholic white woman, and I'm supporting Barack Obama," Massman recalled.

Massman knew there was political potency in the statement. It directly refuted the conventional wisdom at the time that older, white women, particularly supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, never would support Obama's candidacy.

At age 75, Massman -- a former dairy farmer, mother of 13 and grandmother of 27 -- will be attending her first national convention as the state's oldest national delegate when the Democratic National Convention kicks off Monday in Denver.

Massman makes no secret of what it was that re-ignited her passion for politics. The moment for her came during Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. Massman instantly was converted.

Massman calls Obama intellectual and thoughtful, someone who has grown up in different places and countries and knows what it's like to live in those environments.

"He represents the perfect American. I'm Irish-Dutch. He's Irish, Scotch and Kenyan, and most Americans are more than one nationality. We are a melting pot, after all," she said.

DFL leaders say the DFL delegation will be one of the most diverse ever. It will include 25 African-Americans, six American Indians, 10 Asian-Pacific Islanders and seven Latinos. Its youngest will be 17-year-old David Gilbert-Pederson of Minneapolis. Its second youngest will be 18-year-old Sam Hagedorn, a native of Rochester and a graduate of Mayo High School.

John Stiles, the state DFL Party's communications director, said the DFL delegation will almost certainly be more reflective of the state's diversity than the GOP delegation, which he said will be almost "entirely white," older and mostly Christian, "with no people of different religious beliefs in it."

Last night, the Minnesota Campaign for Change officially launched Minnesota Women for Obama with events in Duluth, Rochester, and Minneapolis.

Over 1000 people participated in the kick-off, either in person or by watching a live webcast of the event on MN.BarackObama.com!

Chelsa Nelson, a student at the University of Minnesota in Duluth shared her story about the Dultuh event:

The Women for Obama event was incredibly inspiring. I felt it brought a sense of community to women across the state of Minnesota. Women are the majority and are yet often overlooked and it was very empowering for the Obama campaign to pay special attention to our issues, passions, and concerns.

I am looking forward to continuing to contribute my time and resources to this well run and inclusive campaign. We need as many volunteers as possible to get Barack Obama elected and I feel this event did a wonderful job of exciting women and encouraging women’s involvement.

Minnesota Women for Obama Kick-Off in the News

In an effort to solidify his support among female voters -- many of whom had been devoted followers of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton -- supporters of presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama lauded their candidate's support of women's issues at a Minneapolis rally Wednesday.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., got the crowd cheering by thanking Obama backers and those who had campaigned for Clinton, saying, "We're all together now."

"Are we fired up and ready to go?" Klobuchar asked. "Are you tired of that same old leadership in D.C.?"

"Yeah!" the mostly female audience responded.

Organizers said more than 600 people attended the event at the Woman's Club of Minneapolis as it was simulcast to similar gatherings in Duluth and Rochester. They heard a cavalcade of noted female speakers argue that Obama has long record of supporting women's issues, especially when compared to his likely Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain.

Klobuchar then introduced one of Obama's potential running mates, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who urged the crowd by phone to help "mobilize other women across the country," in support of Obama.

Perhaps the biggest cheers were for famed arctic explorer Ann Bancroft. She told the pro-Obama crowd that "it's time to win the hearts of the world back."

"It's going to take all of you," Bancroft said. "Each one of those small steps makes a difference to the bigger goal.

"Those steps matter."

WOMEN FOR CHANGE: Liz in Duluth

Liz started her internship with the Campaign for Change in Duluth in July. She previously worked with Students for Obama at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from October 2007 to May 2008.

What did you do before joining the campaign?

I was just another college student, working with College Democrats and a member of the Wisconsin Women’s Crew team.

What inspired you to get involved?

I knew that if I didn’t get involved now, I would regret it for the rest of my life. In my opinion, Barack is a once in a lifetime candidate and we only get one chance to elect him, I’m doing everything I can to make sure our country takes advantage of this opportunity.

What is your day like?

On a typical day I usually do a couple hours worth of calls, IDing voters, event invites and recruiting volunteers. Also, I do some door knocking and any odd jobs the field organizers have for me. There’s really no typical day in the Obama office.

How has this experience changed your worldview/view of politics?

This experience has definitely changed my view of politics, and given me new energy to continue to fight for change. It has been incredibly refreshing to see how energized people are in this election, and how excited they are to go out and get Obama elected. This election is the critical first step in putting this country back on the right track, and I hope that we can keep this movement going and continue to change politics in the US.

WOMEN FOR CHANGE: Maggie in Minneapolis

Maggie Mitchell is a field organizer with the Minnesota Campaign for Change based out of Minneapolis. After graduating college in the spring, Maggie started volunteering for the campaign in DC.

Why did you decide to get involved with the Obama campaign?

There is no greater cause right now - working to make someone like Barack Obama the leader of our country is the first step to getting this nation back on track and making it as great as it has the potential to be. As Obama says, "in the face of impossible odds, people who love their country can change it" for the better, and that's what I hope to do.

For those not farmiliar with the responsibilities of a field organizer, what is your day like?

On weekdays, we start out with a morning meeting, then make our contacts for our community groups, do voter registration, and then make phone calls all evening, identifying voters and recruiting volunteers. On weekends, it's pretty much all canvassing with the exception of Sunday evening phone calls.

How has your experience on the campaign shaped your views of politics?

I had not realized the power of registering people to vote until I started working on this campaign - I have registered people who are voting for the first time with pride, often because Obama has inspired them to do so, and on the flipside I have encountered individuals who are so cynical about the political system that they no longer see a purpose in voting.

This is the sort of cynicism Senator Obama often speaks of, and it shows me the importance of electing someone who will bring about a visible change in this country - a change that impacts each and every American in a positive way and shows them that working through the political system can make a difference. Obama's campaign represents that "change we can believe in."

Libby Kantner is a field organizer with the Campaign for Change in Minnesota's 7th congressional district, working out of Moorhead. This is her story

When I was in 11th grade I had an amazing American history teacher. The way she talked about America was the way a mother talks about the childhood antics of her son- you could picture events and characters perfectly in your minds’ eye. One day she told our class about a time in American history, right after World War One, when at baseball games, grown men would take of their hats and cry during the National Anthem, because they were just so proud to be Americans. Since that day, that image had been imprinted I my mind. In present day America, you often hear of people hiding their nationality when they travel abroad, or laughing at the idiocracy of our president. You never see that sort of pride. I long to make America a place that we are once again proud to call home. I believe that Barack Obama, with his unique background and willingness to include everyone in the political system, can do that.

That's why I joined the campaign.

Before I joined the campaign I was just your typical college student, spending my first summer home from college working at Caribou Coffee and toiling away at an internship for my City Council Member, Melvin Carter of Saint Paul. My life was blissfully busy- I still had time to catch the summer blockbusters and make everlasting friendship pacts. But then I got a call from Regional Field Director Maggie Thompson at the start of July, and the pockets of free time in my life went from few to none. After a few weeks of interning in the Saint Paul office, I was offered the job of Field Organizer in Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District. This District is the largest congressional district in the country that does not make up an entire state, and while it is only a few hours away from my home, it feels like a different world. The people in the greater Minnesota are very friendly and willing to talk, no matter their political persuasion . With such a lower population density, the people of CD7 are often few and far between, and for a city girl like me, it can seem a little lonely.

This afternoon, the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Convention Committee announced that Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar will speak at the Convention in Denver on Monday, August 25th.

Sen. Klobuchar will address the Convention on the same night as Michelle Obama.

Minnesota DNC delegation more diverse than ever

KARE 11 has an article u highlighting the diversity of Minnesota's delegation to the Democratic National Convention, which starts next Monday:

There's a time in every national convention when each state gets to show its face to the world. And, more often than not, it's a white face out in front.
It happens as the leaders of state delegations formally cast their ballots. Historically the people in that spotlight, expounding on the virtues of their home states, have been Caucasian.
And, while Minnesota's population may be overwhelmingly white, its delegation to the Democratic National Convention in Denver next week will present a more diverse front.
"Fifty out of 109 Minnesota delegates will be men and women of color," Senator Mee Moua told reporters at a Saint Paul news conference Monday.
Moua, a Hmong immigrant herself, will be part of the most ethnically and racially diverse group of Minnesota Democrats ever sent to the D.N.C.
"We've had not only historic turnout of individuals to participate this year, but we've had historic turnout of individuals who want to go to Denver to witness history."
Senator Patricia Torres Ray said that number is already taking Democrats from other states by surprise.
"Many Latinos in California, New York and Texas say, 'Really? Are you sending 50 people of color to Denver? Are you sure?'"
Ray, the first Latina ever elected to the Minnesota Senate, said she has a ready answer.
"I say yes, I'm very serious because this Minnesota is the same Minnesota that welcomed me 21 years ago as a new immigrant."
The breakdown offered by the DFL includes 25 African Americans and immigrants from Africa, ten delegates classified as Asian/Pacific Islander, nine Latinos and six Native American Indian tribal members.
While the state party conducted outreach efforts in hopes of attracting more ethnic minority delegates, those individuals still had to do the hard work of winning precinct and district elections to become national delegates.
"And I will tell you some of those elections were very, very hard fought," Moua said, "I can't even remember how many ballots we had to go through to get people elected to become delegates."
Josie Johnson, an African American and long-time party activist, said she was drawn back onto the convention track this year by the opportunity to be part of history with the nomination of either with Senator Barack Obama, or his rival Hillary Clinton.
"When you get a certain age you think let someone else do it, you've had your turn, sit down," she remarked, "They suggested that this might truly be the year that I truly want to go, and I do."
Johnson was part of the state's contingent that traveled to the March on Washington in 1963, where the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior delivered his "I have a dream" speech.
"He spoke of the day when people would be judged by their character and not by the color of their skin, and here we are in 2008 with the opportunity to do just that."
Many first-time delegates are immigrants, including Shanti Shah of Eden Prairie.
"I'm a Hillary delegate," Shah said, "But we will unite to be one party regardless of our race, gender or national origin."
Younger Democrats will also play a role in Denver, with 23 delegates under the age of 35. One of them is David Gilbert-Pederson, who won't turn 18 until October.
"Even though I can't vote yet," the young Obama volunteer told KARE 11, "It's my prerogative to elect and help elect leaders who will make the right decisions for my generation, and my children's generation."
On the other end of the experience spectrum is Rick Stafford, who will be taking part in his ninth national convention next week. He's one of nine Minnesota delegates who are gay or lesbian.
"And when we talk about diversity, we talk about the fabric and the kaleidoscope of what Minnesota really represents," Stafford said.
People around the nation will probably still regard Minnesota as a relatively "white" place, and the most recent US Census figures put the state's white population at 89 percent.
But at the DNC in Denver the state's delegation will reveal more of a rainbow colored tapestry, one that insiders say is a truer reflection of more recent demographic trends in Minnesota.
"As a Native American tribal member, as a gay man, I just think it's thrilling to go to Denver," said Minneapolis City council member Robert Lilligren, "To go a national convention and put a somewhat new and different face on Minnesota."
Josie Johnson added, "I believe this convention and the people we have gathered to go and represent Minnesota will make all of you proud Minnesota."

WOMEN FOR CHANGE: Bianca Scott in Wayzata, MN

Bianca Scott is an intern in the Campaign for Change office in Wayzata. Blanca is an international studies major at the University of Chicago. She plans on continuing to volunteer with the campaign when she returns to school in the fall. After interning for the campaign this summer, Bianca is now considering adding a political science double major.

How long have you been volunteering with the Obama campaign?

Originally, I was accepted into the 6-week Obama Fellowship program back in June, but unfortunately it was unavailable in Minnesota. I was so glad when I found out I could still contribute as much as I wanted to by being an intern here. My first day in the campaign office made me wish I had started my involvement earlier! But I am ecstatic to be able to now call myself an intern of the Obama Campaign for Change.

What inspired you to get involved?

I would have to say the number one catalyst would simply be Barack Obama's passion.

The ardent way in which he speaks about every thing is inspirational in itself. His care for our country, our future, along with our "fellow citizens of the world" is enough, I believe, to move anyone to become involved with his campaign to ensure a brighter future through his election. I suppose my interest in political science is a factor as well, but it is truly the goal of electing Obama into the office that I care about most.

For those unfarmiliar with the responsibilities of an intern, what does your typical day look like?

As an intern, I am required to work on the campaign at least twenty hours a week. Usually, I drive into the office for a four hour shift and do whatever the Field Organizer says needs to be done. The other interns and I do a lot of calling/id-ing voters from lists, canvasing in various neighborhoods, and voter registration where we go to public places and make sure everyone's voting information is up to date. Volunteers come out with us, too, a lot of the time.

How has your experience on the campaign shaped your worldview?

Although I have been with the campaign for a relatively short time, the experience is already changing my perspective on everything from people to politics. It's interesting, at the end of the day, to realize all the different types of people I've spoken to in a short period of time. I feel as though this work is just broadening my worldview in every direction as I go, and the great part is it's not even close to finishing.

WOMEN FOR CHANGE: Minnesota State Field Director Jaci Urness

Jaci Urness has been with the Obama campaign since February 2007, first as a field organizer, then as a Regional Field Director, and now as the Field Director for the Obama campaign in Minnesota. Urness, an East Grand Forks native, earned her B.A. in political science and a minor in journalism from the University of Iowa.

How long have you been with the Obama campaign?

I began this campaign on the announcement tour back in February 2007 and have been on ever since. I remember the first time I heard Senator Obama…it was a packed gym in Cedar Rapids, IA and I had been standing outside all day in the freezing cold making sure all the attendees were signed in and in the proper lines. Finally, I was able to go inside the gym. It was packed – wall to wall - and in walks Barack. He was positive, charismatic, and quite the contrast from our current President. I knew right then this was going to be one amazing campaign but I am still sometimes in shock at just how incredible the last 19 months have been.

What did you do before joining the campaign? And what was your role before becoming the state field director?

Before joining the campaign I was a Field Organizer in on the DFL Coordinated Campaign in the 5th Congressional District. Before that I worked in Former Majority Leader, Dean Johnson’s Senate office during the 2006 session.

To this day I still believe being a Field Organizer (FO) is one of, if not the toughest, jobs in a campaign. These young people give up their lives to work every day, often over 14 hours a day, for peanuts, because they believe we need to change the direction this country is going. It’s pretty inspiring to now be on the directing end and see the excitement and frustration in the FO’s and relive my memories through their new experiences.

For those who aren’t familiar with the responsibilities of a state field director, what is your day to day like?

As the Field Director I wear many different hats. Essentially my role is to manage and coordinate how we as a campaign are connecting directly with voters around the state. Whether that is through phone calls, door to door contacts, at community events or through our neighbor to neighbor program I am responsible for making sure we are doing as much as possible to reach as many voters as we can. . In addition I am responsible for setting the tone and direction for all field staff on the ground. That means being truly committed to our motto- Respect, Empower, Include- because I know it has to be carried out at all levels, starting from the top down if we want to see it work from the bottom up.

Sen. Klobuchar Announces Rural Minnesotans for Obama

Senator Amy Klobuchar was on hand at Farm Fest to announce the Rural Minnesotans for Obama Steering Committee and to discuss Barack's New Energy for America plan.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar:

Barack Obama supports bipartisan efforts on agriculture and energy that Senator McCain has rejected, including this year's Farm Bill. Tomorrow, Sen. Amy Klobuchar will be in Redwood County, MN to rally Obama supporters at Farm Fest. She'll be on hand to discuss Barack's comprehensive energy plan and to announce the Rural Minnesotans for Obama Steering Committee.

Amy Klobuchar will headline a rally of Obama supporters tomorrow at Farm Fest to announce the Rural Minnesotans for Obama Steering Committee and to discuss Obama’s New Energy for America plan. Report: Minnesotans paid $729 more per family while Exxon reaped $11.68 billion profit

Earlier today, the Obama campaign released a report highlighting the real impact of Exxon-Mobil's record-setting profits on Minnesota families.

The report found that from April to June, the period in which Exxon reaped in $11.68 billion in profit, a typical Minnesota family paid $729 more for gas than they did in the same three months of 2001, when Bush first took office, in addition to having their income fall by $7,307 in inflation-adjusted dollars.

Barack called the juxtaposition outrageous and said that its time the economy started working for American families, and not for oil-company executives:

Perhaps the only thing more outrageous than Exxon Mobil making record profits while Americans are paying record prices at the pump is the fact that Senator McCain has proposed giving them an additional $1.2 billion tax break. While Senator McCain’s plan has succeeded in helping his campaign raise over $1 million from oil and gas company executives and employees just last month, it won’t lower gas prices or end our dangerous dependence on foreign oil. Instead of an energy policy that reads like an oil-company wish list, it’s time to create a new American energy economy by investing in alternative energy, creating millions of new jobs, increasing fuel efficiency standards, and ending the tyranny of oil once and for all.

Women on Wednesdays Phonebank

Barack is surrounded by strong women on a daily basis. He was raised by single mother and inspired by his grandmother. Barack describes his wife, Michelle, as "the rock" of the Obama family.

All of Barack's accomplishments have been made possible because of these women. So it's not surprising that women have an important role in his presidential campaign.

Right now, a dozen members of Women for Obama are phone banking at the St. Paul HQ of the Minnesota Campaign for Change.

Jackie Hays and Audrey Schroeder (pictured above) are longtime friends from Roseville, MN, who came to phonebank together. Jackie is one of many supporters of Hillary Clinton now supporting Barack Obama for President, citing his commitment to ending the War in Iraq and energy policies. On her last call of the night, Audrey called a house with 5--yes, 5!--Barack Obama supporters!
