Politics and marketing

I read an interesting question and answer earlier today from a relatively famous graphic designer and wanted to post it here.

Stefan Sagmeister's website has a pretty unique interface and has posted several questions that were sent to him from students. Here's the one I found intriguing:

Q:Do you think you could defeat a politic campaign trough a design campaign? Can a design campaign decide an election? Is a politic campaign a design campaign?

A: No I actually think not. Now I know that Saatchi always claimed he put Margret Thatcher into office and he is full of shit. We have the annoying habit to constantly overestimate our power.

Design and advertising has a huge impact where the consumer cannot possible see a difference between products or services (say: Vodka) but is surprisingly less powerful when the average person does see that difference (say: cars or politics).

Rick Warren a big mistake

The self-promoting Southern Baptist pastor, Rick Warren, has not only insulted gays and compared abortion to the holocaust, but especially hates people like me, who identify as Humanist and atheist.

In interviews with Newsweek and BeliefNet, Warren responds like a bigot when conversing with opposing views. Sam Harris gives thoughtful reasons, which Rick Warren blows off. He is a slippery snake.

I think a key to understanding Warren is his view of religion as marketing. In the book, "Ideas that Stick", Warren's approach is described. He tells his staff to think of a Saddleback Church person -- of a particular income and education level. His church is then tailored to market to that person.

Warren is sometimes praised for promoting environmental causes for Christians. But he appears to thoughlessly blow off other issues, like abortion and gay rights. Was it really so easy? Or did he run it past a marketing poll for which issues to modernize? Enough people hate gays that he doesn't have to love them either?

Please, Barack, ditch this guy.

LAT

Obama has the best marketers yet.

When it comes to winning elections, Obama has it made. I believe he has the best marketers in the world. Not to mention he has a charm no one can ignore. You either like him or you hate it. I personally, Like Obama, he has wisdom, and maybe new to this but I think he really means what he says, even if it is written out by his writers. He seems alot more personal then most people that elected to be president, much less anything in office. But his marketing strategies are very good.

Marketing in social networks

Marketing to the youth

marketing to single mothers

Marketing to people without health care

gold and silver coins with his face on them

Posters, shirts, pins, practically anything about him you can buy.

And, I think he's got some really nifty photographers too.

Like I said, I belive he has some good marketing going on and that as well as his followers, contributers, volunteers and helpers, etc all helped him get into office.

Despite his past, his mother, his pastor, and all the negative energy abound in this election-he still made it. And I think 4 years from now, he'll make it again in the next elections.

Politics 2.0 ; A Land Slide Beyond Expectations!!!

I personally thought that if this was any kind of a just country that Obama would win by @ 15% margin. This is a clear example of the power of a good man running for president coupled with a high level of communication that reaches the public at the highest level of convenience. The ironic thing is that the republican party could not attempt to do this because it requires an honest party with an honest cadidate in order for them to willingly be exposed so openly and easily. That is why Barrack won by a 100% margin. That is why the republicans sat there on T.V. at John McCain's election watch party with egg on their face because they did their best and pulled every dirty trick that they had as usual and were still thoroughly trounced. That is why the elitists out there were in tears as they watched and realized that Obama has changed the game forever and even the highest level of government must now listen to and answer to the new era welly connected and unified mainstreet massess that are now more highly informed due to the wide spread acceptance and understanding of the internet. Well done.Man, I thought that I would never get to see this day.

Simply Amazing!

As a marketer, I followed Barack Obama's campaign with particular interest. His clear, simple, compelling, and consistent "change" message broke through the political noise bombarding us the past two years. And, talk about energizing an untapped voter base! The web 2.0 tools used to create the supporter community were deployed so effectively that we've never seen such a young adult voter turnout as yesterday. We felt a part of something bigger than ourselves.

And for those who pooh poohed the message as too simplistic and without specifics and depth - I recommend you take a close look at the linkages and strategies used by this campaign to point those interested in becoming more fully informed on plan details to check out the website and listen carefully to the messages delivered during debates and even within ads. Obama's campaign continually reinforced the simple change message with follow-on detail without overloading.

Check out today's Advertising Age's article post for more reasons why Advertising Age voted Barack Obama as marketer of the year. http://adage.com/columns/article?article_id=132237

Fast Company's article on building the Obama brand is interesting, as well. http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/124/the-brand-called-obama.html

Washington D.C -- Lead by Example

I mentioned in an earlier blog that I would get to this subject -- Washington, D.C. As a 12 yearold boy, I visited our nation's capitol in the Summer of 1968. Yeah, one of the year's that will go down in American History as a time when we thought it was possible that the great experiment of a democratic state might not last. The Vietnam War had pitched the half the country against the other half. Riots erupted on college campses from coast-to-coast. The Chicago Police brutally beat Anti-War protesters on National TV. The National Gaurd was called out to help. The newspapers and magazines of the day were filled with photos of tear gas, flower power, troops with young college students, people being beaten and dragged away.

The spin from the was into the Media was atrocious -- always listing how many "enemy" dead as compared to how many US sodiers killed each day and each week. And this on the six O'clock new delivered straight to the family dinner table. Never were the numbers believable -- the US troops were always less killed sometimes by orders of magnitude, but the reality surfaced that whole battalions of troops had been killed, sometimes in single days.

It was a time that tried everyone. I really began to believe that the future of our country would not stand, if things continued like this.

And yet, in 1968...

When I visited the Senate, there were no security lines. When I visited the Washington Monument, I walked the stairs all the way to the top with a friend of mine, there was no security ensemble or Xray room to stop us. The biggest security was at the US mint! My friend, Michael, and I went to the Smithsonian, the National Archives, the Sentate, the House, the White House, the Washington and Lincoln Memorials, the Jefferson memorial, the Tresury Building -- heck, we even had lunch in the Senate Office Building cafeteria and rode on the subway to get there from the Capitol with Senator Edward Kennedy! No xray. No security details. No fear.

But in 2008...

I had told my son and his friend of my Summer in '68 and what I had done, and how much I had enjoyed the great City of Washington. How proud I was of it and what a shining example of honor and peace it was.

Everywhere we went, streets blocked off, barricades to prevent "who knows what". Xray machines, and military-like security personnel, yelling at us to stay in line and stand against the wall in order to go into the Capitol rotunda. Heck, my wife had to get her purse Xrayed just to visit the National Aquarium in the Federal Triangle. It was ridiculous, the complete overkill of security and disdain for visitors to our Nation's Capitol. We couldn't climb the stairs in the Washington Monument any more -- closed due to Security. We couldn't visit the White House (owned by the Public since the 19th Century) -- closed for Security. We managed to visit many places, but going to them was worse in most cases than boarding an airplane's security.

And some of you might think that this is necessary because of the terrorists. Is it necessary in your city? Is it necessary in your hometown? Would it make any less of a headline if terrorists blew up something in your city than Washington, D.C.? Would it kill any less people?

What I saw in Washington, D.C. this Summer was fear mongering. Out-and-out marketing to tell everyone who participates in that city that you should be afraid, all the time.

I say that this is wrong. It wasn't necessary in the bomb-throwing times of Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, it's not necessary today.

Washington, D.C. needs to lead by example as an exemplary city, the quintessential American city. If the new president wants to lead, the city he lives in and governs from should lead as well.

You know, on the Federal Planning and Urban Development Building there are NO solar panels? There is no water reclamation system in place for any of the city parks or memorials? The traffic gridlock is horrendous and the subway system is fabulous! Oh, by the way, no security measures in the subway system -- oversite? No, just doesn't take as good of a picture for the media marketing.

Fix our city, Mr. President, make it a place where fear doesn't exists again. Lead by example.

How can you Write a Great About the Author Box

How can you Write a Great About the Author Box
Your article marketing campaign will gain almost instant exposure for your business. That is if you let people know who wrote the articles you are submitting. When you write your articles, don't forget to include the most vital aspect, the About the Author box. This is your space; use it wisely.

Once you've created a stunningly informative article, you'll want to see some sort of payback. What makes article marketing worthwhile for the authors? That's right, it's the About the Author box. That is the place where people who have loved your article will be able to go and get more information about you, the author.

What to Write

Your About the Author box is generally short and sweet (think 300 characters or less). This is your chance to make a pitch and sell yourself a bit, and drive people to your web site. Lead off the text with your name, accompanied by some information about your credentials.

For instance, "Kelly Gilbertson has been hand crafting custom napkin rings for over twenty-five years. Her unique artistic process allows her to create one of a kind napkin rings like nothing else on the market."

See how it works? State your name, your business and why you are special. While napkin rings may not be your forte, I am sure you can find something interesting to say about the product or service you are offering. If there is something particularly unique about the company itself, you may also want to make a mention of that.

Your Website

The website address is perhaps the most essential component of the About the Author box. This is why you decided to embark on your article marketing endeavor. It is the quickest and easiest way for readers to get more information about your company. When they like what they read they simply direct their mouse to the bottom of the screen, click on the link, and voila! They find themselves directly linked to your very own website!

Not only does this bolster your direct site traffic, it also helps you establish a ton of backlinks which will boost your Google rankings. The more backlinks you have from credible websites, the higher you'll see yourself climb in the rankings.

Directories will accept either a text version, or an HTML version, of your About the Author box. In your text version, it's fine to include your URL. Also, include what's known as a fully qualified URL, complete with the href.

There is no mistaking the importance of the About the Author box. It is the portal through which consumers will discover you through your articles. Just watch as your site traffic, Google rankings, and profits climb, all thanks to the About the Author box.

Article Marketing, What Good Can It Do?

When mentioning article marketing there are still many people who laugh and shake there head. Typical comments from these people are often "whet good can one article do"? You know, that person is actually very right when asking this question in a laughing matter because one article in itself will not do much good at all. Many articles on the other hand can move mountains.

Well, it might not move mountains literally but they sure can get traffic rolling to your website. How I found out about the power of article marketing was really not planned rather I had run out of money trying everybody's magic formula on how to drive traffic to my site. Needles to say I came to learn about article marketing as a last desperate attempt in making my website take of.

Sitting there with no money left, a website I had worked so hard to put together and a vision of it all come tumbling down made me realize I had to take some drastic measures. That was when I came across some articles about the power of article marketing and the best of all this wouldn't have to cost me any money. You know what I did, went straight to my computer and started writing.

Having never written an article before I must confess it took some trial and error before I finally got it right. From that day on I wrote several articles a day and submitted them to as many directories as I could possible find that did not charge me anything to submit my articles. Yes, I did do a lot of work and wrote a heck of a lot of articles but it didn't take very long before I started noticing traffic coming to my site.

If you for one minute think that I started slowing down on my article writing when seeing the traffic increasing, you are wrong. Seeing the results from what I had done just made me even more exited so I kept on writing. After a while I did slow down and wrote maybe 3 or 4 articles a week which seemed to keep a steady flow of traffic to my site. Now, over a year later, my site has gotten to the point where I really do not need to do much marketing for it at all but that is only because of the type of website this is.

Most people considering getting into article marketing need to realize that any type of marketing needs to be done on a consistent basis in order to keep the traffic coming. Out of all the different types of internet marketing strategies I have tried out so far, none has worked as good and been as effective as article marketing.
Make money from your Mailing list!

If you are serious about making money online then you simply must understand that you need to build an optin list. It really can make all the difference between you succeeding and failing with your home based business. It doesn't matter what you do online, you must build your mailing list.

Having your own list allows you to email your customers and prospects once they have subscribed to your newsletter via your website. You can keep them updated on any changes or additions to your website or company.

The best thing though is that because these people visited your website and opted in to receive your emails, you will never have to worry about any spam complaints, and that is a huge benefit. You can communicate and send them all your offers and sell them products they are interested in buying.

Providing you give your subscribers high quality content and information they are interested in, they will look forward to receiving your emails. This is when you can begin to sell them products and start to create an income. It is also likely they will refer other people to your website and tell them how good your content is.

Once you have your list you are not limited to just selling them your products. In fact below you will find 7 Top ways to make money from your mailing list. Remember the more subscribers you have, the more money you will eventually make.

1 - You can begin selling advertisement space on your website. You will need to generate a lot of traffic for this, but once it builds up you can have space for banners or text ads on your website. You could also have a space inside your emails or newsletters you send out. Lots of companies are interested in purchasing these types of ads providing your list is of a good size.

2 - You can join forces with similar websites to your own. By using P4P on your website a company will pay you for generating a lead or prospect for them. A simple piece of code or a short text ad will work this well for you.

3 - You could contact other businesses and ask for a small commission from any sales you make to your list for their product or service. Once your list trusts you, you can run regular ads for other businesses and make extra money this way.

4 - You can act as the middleman for larger companies. You can sell their products and people pay you. All you then do is simply go to the larger company and purchase the product and forward it on. Make sure you have a good profit margin when trying this method.

5 - You can make your own products or reports and sell them to your subscribers. People will pay money for information to gain the knowledge they need to improve their lives and make them simpler. Again, providing you have formed trust with your subscribers this can generate a lot of income for you.

6 - Tell your subscribers to refer their friends to your newsletter or website. You can offer an incentive to them for doing this like giving them a free book or product for referring a certain number of people to your newsletter.

7 - Contact your subscribers and offer to a Joint Venture with them. Many of them will also have mailing lists and by doing a Joint Venture with them, you can reach many more people and make a lot more money. It is also an idea to contact other list owners when thinking about doing Joint Ventures.

Keep your list fresh and updated and constantly work to build it and increase your subscriber count. It will become the heart of your home business so look after your subscribers well.

So where do we go from here?

We’ve listened to the messages. We’ve heard the discussions. We’ve rolled our eyes at the pundits hypothetic baloney, seen the headlines, read the blogs and watched the polls bounce into the Republican favor after a very “lucky guess” with the addition of Sarah Palin. But we’ve come too far and fought to hard to allow Barack’s presidency slip through our fingers.

Time is too short to just simply continue down the traditional “change” path. It’s what got us here and it’s what we believe in and what we want, but it is not what will help us win right now. The general public already knows that change is the Obama theme and that Barack owns it. What I’m suggesting is that we need to lay low on the change theme until the last week before the election. Laying out the “McCain is not about change” theory on the stump is simply falling into a Republican trap. They are trying purposely to throw us off course. And guess what? They’re winning at it.

So, where do we go from here? Here’s a few marketing ideas I think will work.

• Forget about Sarah Palin. The more we ignore her, the faster she will go away. If we need to address something related to her it should not come from Barack’s lips. She is nothing more than a small town, narrow-minded figure that the Republicans have latched on to because MaCain has no platform. The media has been bored since the tough battle against Hillary and so they have drifted to Palin quite simply because she is a woman. However, she is not Wonder Woman. And, let’s face it, she is no Hillary Clinton and never will be.

• Concentrate on two main issues for the general public – economy and ending the war. Enlist every major economist (and Bill Clinton) to help lay out a new plan (in a step-by-step format) and include how ending the war will bring prosperity back to America. Deliver a major “presidential” speech about the economy with Bill Clinton at Barack’s side. The media will not be able to talk about anything else because they believe that Bill and Barack hate each other. Deliver this speech 2 weeks before the election so that the Republicans do not have enough time for rebuttal.

• Rally on the Hispanic marketplace and use Richardson to do so. Enlist Oscar De La Hoya (the biggest hero in the Hispanic community) who is retiring from boxing after his fight Dec. 6 against Filipino star Manny Pacquiao. This is simple cross promotion and good for both the party and for De La Hoya. I can help with this.

• Push the health plan and ask Hillary to do so. Find a way to hint that Hillary will head the Health Plan initiative under an Obama administration. Have Hillary deliver a major speech about the importance of health in America for a brighter future.

• Do a new college tour, educate older voters and ask housewives to participate. We must get every college student there is to educate the older voters around them and get them to the polls. Every college student must devote at least two hours a day to the cause and go door-to-door to speak to housewives. Housewives are the soul of middle America. Ask them to help get the word out in rural areas.

• Manipulation of the media is the quickest way to get the message out. What they want is for us to give them something new to talk about. Use the items listed above to capture the media’s attention.

Ok, now for my pep talk.

Somehow, somewhere down the line we’ve forgotten how to think for ourselves. Americans have been herded like sheep into believing that the only way to get ahead is by stepping on others. This is a Republican agenda. As Democrats, we must show unity. Complete unity.

Too often, we become absorbed in our individual concerns without thinking what impact our actions may have on those around us. Too often, people have told us that we should not move forward, when we know in our hearts that we must. Too often, we’ve become lost in confusion without a clear path in how to make our lives better. Too often, people tell us we can’t, when we know we can.

These distorted ways of thinking are what holds us back from banding together as a nation and bringing peace to the world. These are the thoughts of flawed leadership that must be corrected if we are to create a new road for generations to follow.

People, we need to get outside of the box and concentrate on new possibilities. Nevermore have the stakes been so important. Nevermore has the time to act been so crucial to our future. Nevermore have we needed a leader such as Barack Obama.

Let's do this, now. There is not a minute to waste. Election day will be here sooner than you know.

Barack Obama is Changing Politics Like the Beatles Changed Music

Everybody loves The Beatles right? Well, duh. They were great. And so were most of the bands of their generation. But it was the music that came some time after them that really showed us how much we lost when John, Paul, George and Ringo pressed Abbey Road and went their separate ways. The same is true of Barack Obama. He is going to be an amazing leader and will inspire a generation of leadership all around the world. The catch is that thirty years from now, when he is gone from the public scene, we may wish that he had never shown us how to meld politics and marketing into such a successful venture.

The Internet Changed Politics

I love the way technology is changing how we look at the world. Websites and social networks are changing businesses in general and my industries in broadcasting and video production in specific. I must admit I’m all over the changing technology and I LOVE the advancement that’s being made. Robotic cameras, HD TV, Interactive TV, Internet Portal TV, video blogging, video podcasting, web streaming, web sponsored video clips all have changed the way we entertain and express ourselves. I can’t tell you how many social networks I belong to (well, I could but you wouldn’t believe me) or how many groups I’ve started for myself AND for my clients.

But the thing that amazes me the most is how the Internet has changed politics. This can clearly be seen in how the presidential nomination campaigns have been run. Now, I had chosen my candidate early on, but I felt I knew I had made the right decision when I saw him pop up on LinkedIn and Facebook. I thought, this just amazing! I can actually join one of his social networks…wait; I can create my own page on his social network. To me, that was the coolest thing. Oh, and I’m NOT a member of generation X. I’m 46 years old so I’m closer to 50 than I am away from it. I remember when you had to get up to change the channel on the TV, rotary phones and typing scripts on a typewriter. I can remember vinyl records that melted in the sun and the penny you had to place on the arm of the player to keep it from skipping. I remember my first clunky answering machine you had to explain to folks how to use (my parents have never gotten use to them) and my first cell phone that was bigger than a breadbox.

Still I love this time in life as well with new technology and all the wonderful things it’s bringing our way. To think, this new technology may have helped a Presidential nominee get elected. What an age we live in. Read on for more information on the way the Internet impacted the Presidential electoral process.

From The Sunday Times, May 25, 2008
“Barack Obama is master of the new Facebook politics”
By Andrew Sullivan

Last Tuesday night, as the results from Kentucky and Oregon gave both the Clinton and the Obama campaign something to feel good about, another statistic blipped up on the television. In April the Obama team had raised a further $31m for its campaign. The Clintons managed $20m - and the broader financial picture was even grimmer for Hillary.

Barack Obama now has close to $38m cash in hand for the remaining campaign, compared with Clinton’s $6m. And her debts amount to $10m, not counting the $11m she lent herself. His debts are only $2m.

How did this happen? The Clintons are the biggest name in the Democratic Party. Their campaign chairman, Terry McAuliffe, was once chairman of the party. In December, when Clinton was the favorite, she was able to use that leverage to persuade most big donors to go with her. She had star power and a pitch designed to appeal to Hollywood (the first female president) and to New York (she was its senator).

There is only one real answer to Obama’s financial success: the Internet. What Howard Dean, a previous candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, presaged in 2004 - when he raised $27m online for his campaign - has come to fruition only four years later with a candidate who is primed to take advantage of web power and a generation that is now used to relating, thinking, talking and meeting online.

It was one of Clinton’s many huge errors that she bypassed Silicon Valley’s fundraisers in favor of more traditional areas of Democratic support. And she missed the key element of the new politics: social networking. She was still AOL; Obama was Facebook. Clinton was the PC; Obama was a Mac.

As Peter Leyden of the New Politics Institute, an influential California think tank, says: “What’s amazing is that Hillary built the best campaign that has ever been done in Democratic politics on the old model – she raised more money than anyone before her, she locked down all the party stalwarts, she assembled an all-star team of consultants and she really mastered this top-down, command-and-control type of outfit. And yet she’s getting beaten by this political start-up that is essentially a totally different model of the new politics.”

The new model really began thanks to John McCain. His 2002 campaign-finance law ended the era of a few big donors funding party politics. The maximum legal amount of any individual donation became $2,000 in 2004 and $2,300 in this election cycle. So the key to raising money was getting people to “bundle” together as many friends and colleagues as possible to contribute the maximum of $2,300 each.

That’s how George W Bush did it – with his “pioneers” and “rangers”: friends and supporters who could corral dozens or hundreds of friends to pitch in. The usual means were living-room fundraisers and barbecues and phone trees, often involving the candidate himself or a surrogate.

But the Obama team realized that online social networking made such physical fundraisers redundant; and it also realized that a much better point of entry wasn’t $2,300 but less than one-tenth of that: $200. It transformed its website into a social networking zone, and its appeal to the young made this strategy viral. Last month’s $31m haul – almost all of it accrued online – is all the more impressive when you discover that 94% of it came in sums of $200 or less. A million little donors became the model.

One of the men Obama hired to set up this new effort certainly knew what he was doing: Chris Hughes is a co-founder of Facebook.

When you hear Hillary Clinton call Obama an elitist, the flood of small donations is worth remembering. Obama’s campaign has in fact been the least elitist and most democratic fundraising operation in the history of American politics. He has more than 1.5m individual donors, who come with their own e-mail address books and social networks. And since most have not donated anything like the maximum amount, he doesn’t just have a list of names to thank; he has a huge list of names to ask for more. This is a money machine unlike any other.

Joshua Green, whose definitive report on Obama’s strategy appears in the latest issue of The Atlantic magazine, points out something else: “During the month of February, for example, his campaign raised a record-set-ting $55m – $45m of it over the internet – without the candidate himself hosting a single fundraiser.” That’s another staggering benefit of this kind of open-source, web-based operation: the personal drain on a candidate is lessened. He can spend less time at rubber-chicken dinners, fewer soul-sapping hours begging for cash on the phone, less time schmoozing possibly cheesy characters (remember how much trouble Al Gore got into in 2000?) and more time honing speeches, working on policy, engaging the media.

Obama’s trademark mass rallies must also be seen in this context. They aren’t just media draws. Everyone who wanted to get into the 75,000-strong rally in Portland, Oregon, last weekend had to provide an e-mail address (to gain entry). By the time they came home from the event, an e-mail was waiting for them, asking them for money or for referrals to other friends, and encouraging them to form “affinity groups” to spread the network wider and wider.

It’s a new form of politics; it is likely to last beyond the Obama campaign and to change the shape of all campaigns to come. For Obama the new method was also bang on message. His liberalism is not a top-down, managerial variety; it’s more in line with progressive traditions of self-empowerment. A social network was the perfect medium.

I have seen this for myself. This spring, many friends who had never previously been interested in politics suddenly told me about their Obama fundraisers. I was stunned by their activism. No one had asked them. They were arranging the parties or performances or gatherings through Facebook and MySpace, without any formal leadership from Obama headquarters.

Just as Obama’s most famous web videos were never commissioned by the candidate – they were created and disseminated spontaneously online – so his fundraising began to take on a life of its own. The only other candidate who managed to inspire such energy was the maverick Republican Ron Paul. His message was not unlike Obama’s: self-empowered, antiestablishment, next-generation. There is no question in my mind that this is the future of political organization and fundraising.

The strongest criticism of Obama is his lack of substantive achievements in public life. He is a freshman senator, and his record is indeed thin in comparison with that of McCain or Clinton. However, if his abilities in government are in any way similar to the skills he has shown in managing – and brilliantly not managing – his campaign, then this is a candidate not to be underestimated. Clinton has been sideswiped. And, privately, most Republicans I know are terrified.

Maybe Obama’s model is a little before its time. If not, the online president of social-networking democracy is imminent. And his URL is My.BarackObama.com.

Senator Obama's Positioning Challenge

Deal Mr. Axelrod and the Obama for America Campaign:
After hearing Karl Rove on "This Week", I believe that Senator Obama is able to and should quickly own some of the key Republican positions.Specifically, Karl Rove said that McCain needs to advance his reform agenda within a "larger narrative". This "larger narrative" are 6 key platform points that Republicans will attempt to claim as their own. I believe that Senator Obama can quickly "own" each of these points. Here are the six points:1) The country remains a center right country.
2) Americans want control of their healthcare and don't want to give it up to the government. They want to be in charge.
3) Americans want to keep more of their money in order to save and invest as they see fit not as the government sees fit.
4) Americans want to operate their lives with the maximum amount of freedom and liberty.
5) Americans want to be secure and want American to confront its enemies.
6) Americans want reform of great institutions in a way that gives individuals more choice and more control. Here are examples, starting points, that may be able to help Senator Obama "own" these. It is imperative that he obtains a first-mover advantage and obtain the perception that he will be the best candidate to deliver these values to Americans.1) The country remains a center country and the Republicans and John McCain have taken the country to the extreme right. Senator Obama, through his ability to bring to together Democrats, independents and many Republicans and he stated objective of having everyone have a "seat at the table", will bring the country back to the center rather than the extreme right. Proof points:

the right to choose

health care reform not just written by the pharmaceutical companies,

Energy policy that isn't written by the oil companies that are making billions of dollars

Energy policy that fosters long-term alternates to petroleum

2) Americans don't currently have control of their healthcare and Senator Obama's healthcare plan does NOT give control to the government, but rather gives choice to those who don't have a choice. Proof points:

Not having health insurance severly limits American's choices; many times it's the emergency room or nothing at all

employer healthcare plans severly LIMIT choice.

There will be MORE choice with Senator Obama's healthcare plan because ALL providers and citizens participate.

3) Under the current Republican laws, the VAST majority of Americans, Americans that are not the extremely wealthy, have LESS money and CANNOT save and invest. They have NO choice because they don't have the money.

The Bush tax cuts have not given more money to most Americans

Americans under Bush/McCain have less money to spend, less money to invest and in fact are more in-debt

Americans under Bush/McCain have suffered severely with the housing crises and have lost value in their #1 asset.

Under Senator Obama's plans, seniors earning less than $50,000 will pay no federal income tax and therefore have more money.

Those families earning less than $200,000 will have the same amount of money to save and invest.

4) Senator Obama will give more Americans more freedom and liberty than the Republicans and John McCain.

A woman's right to choose.

Fewer intrusions and MORE privacy than with the McCain/ Bush "patriot" act

Choices with healthcare, choices on energy sources, choices to enjoy the environment

5) Sentor Obama will make America MORE secure and will confront our enemies on MANY fronts. Not just military actions, but diplomacy supported by a strong military.

Getting out of Iraq will better stabilize the region and not inflame hatred of the U.S.

Security by making wise, thoughtful choices on when to use military action

Diplomacy will once again be an option of first resort rather than costly, sometimes counter-productive military action

6) Senator Obama is ALL about reform and giving indiviuals more choice and control. He is for individuals having control and choice rather than LOBBYISTS AND SOLELY CORPORATE INTERESTS.

Barack has not had and will not have lobbyists on his presidental campaign staff

Individuals and diverse interests will have a seat at the table to help formulate and guide our institutions; not just corporations. Yet corporations will STILL have input just not at the exclusion of individual interests.

I hope these ideas help the campaign. I'd love to work on Senator Obama's campaign full time. I spent over a week assisting the campaign in Nevada and also helped in California. In Nevada, I provided canvassing training to out-of-state volunteers and served as the Precinct captain with 2 days notice. I'm a CPG marketing expert with extensive experience on branding and positioning. As part of my corporate work, I have worked with the same consultants that provided key positioning research for Hillary Clinton's initial senate campaign. Please feel free to contact me or just consider some of these suggestions.

David Crocker

Marketing Strategist with major strength in brand positioning

http://www.linkedin.com/pub/3/868/1b5

USC MBA 1988

State of Michigan state debate champion 1979

son of Ken Crocker, retired UAW member now retired in Florida originally from Michigan

Inaugural Post!

Hi There Folks!

As you can see this is my first post, so I'll just tell you why I've decided to Blog for Barack! It's pretty basic, if I didn't find a way to get in touch with Barack's PR Folks and Communications Team to share strategies and thoughts, even if they're worthless, I was going to bust. So, what you'll find here is postings of PR and Communications tactics that I think can be effective in this campaign and movement. There is no particular order. Some postings will be random thoughts, and some will be occasional frustrations, but I'll always try to provide a solution or suggested call to action as events unfold. Sometimes there will be pauses in posts, as I am generally only apt to post when I am completely sickened by the mass media and politicos and their impact on the electoral process.

Here Goes Nothing!

Inspired to Serve

I've been so inspired by the thoughtful use of communication technology by the Obama campaign, that it's offered me the window I've been seeking to escape my soulless corporate job and put my skills and talents to a more satisfying (and satisfactory) use.

I have resolved, therefore, to make it my personal and professional mission to enable worthy nonprofits, organizations and artists to use the same techniques and technologies to develop strong relationsihps with their constituents and spread their messages as effectively and gracefully as possible.

Since this site was a large part of the inspiration, I'll use this blog to let you know if anything good comes of it.

Wish me luck!

Few are more Chicago than Elliot Ness. The so-called "untouchable", was a beacon of fidelity and justice. His undying commitment to rooting out corruption exemplified his devoted family values. Ness fought against odds and stereotypes to do the right thing.

Comparing Ness and Obama has some interesting corollaries. It's obvious that McCain has been put up by the republican party as a token candidate. His efforts to "clean up washington" have conspicuously overlooked the weapon's industry. As a veteran, he cant appear as anything other than pro-military and pro-war.
Weapons and Oil are clearly the root of corruption in washington. They have benefited most from the past 8 years, and mislead the country to do it. McCain can speak all he wants about campaign finance reform; but his voting record tells a story of dubious energy bills and war for oil.
Capone led by the sword. We need a president with a strong pen, and a strong stomach. Lets look at the Bush dynasty's tax records. Lets remember Haliburton.

i am always frustrated by clinton, her surrogates, and her supporters telling blatant lies or sharing factually inaccurate information to trick voters. perhaps even more so, i am frustrated by obama gurus who share factually inaccurate information on here even when i know they have the best of intentions... at least i hope we are not misrepresenting our competitor or our very own candidate's record as tools of persuation. i am confident clinton has sufficient skeletons in her closet and obama has proven himself the best qualified leader.

i always say:

clinton = political calculation to meet the popular opinion

obama = moral calculation to meet the consistent greater good

furthermore, i continue to read single sentence "blogs" that don't pose any type of debate or simply restate the obvious. i always want to comment: "thanks captain obvious" but i resist that rude tempation. in addition, i read the comments the some of us are leaving and they are simply disrespectful or rude... yet, i will still giggle because people attempt to embarass the blogger with whom they disagree or find lacking in brain cells... and yet, many times, the ones leaving the comments are the most lacking in brain cells and say the darnest things.

julie hensley of virginia and christopher of ohio commented on a brief blog about clinton advertising on american idol and obama not. julie was quite abrasive and told the blogger to read a book because she thinks that american idol is boring. christopher must have thought he knew about successful elements in a marketing campaign. christopher said that obama doesn't need ad buys on american idol because his campaign is more successful on the phones and in the field. clearly, both are misinformed.

the truth is that i agree american idol is a boring program. i am also embarrassed for my country that more people prefer to vote for an american idol than for the past few american presidents.

however, the reason that clinton would have bought air time with this program is because american idol consistently rates number one, or close to it, in adults 18-34 and teens. while teens can't vote, 18-34 is a key demographic.

on the other hand, the cost of ad buys are based on ratings. this is why super bowl air time is expensive. likewise, american idol ad buys aren't cheap. i am surprised that clinton's team invested in american idol air time to reach 18-34 demographic when they are also paying to reach teens who can't vote. but given how much campaign donations her team reportedly spent on parking, i shouldn't be surprised by any squandering of cash by our competitor. good for them.

more than likley, obama's team has decided to do ad buys with programs that reach key demographics made up of more eligible voters. this strategy would yield a better return on investment based on projected eligible voters per ad buy.

i don't watch tons of tv, but rest assured, i've seen dozens of obama commercials in ohio. i've seen clinton also, but i would estimate that obama airs just as many... if not more.

as for ad buys and why candidates would want to be on tv... obama is effective through rallies and his ground work is a force to be reckon with... but never underestimate the unparallel reach of advertising. not only do you reach people that don't follow the news or have phone numbers in the phone banks... you reinforce obama's messaging to those with who you have already spoken.

be smart. where's that united spirit that this movement is all about? i went as far as to comment on julie's latest blog and let her know how disrespectful she proved herself to be in her remarks above. duh.

for those of you that see factually inaccurate information shared on here, call it out! prevent spreading bad information... even when it supports obama. the worse one is about clinton only authoring and signing into law 20 bills during her first term as a senator. the bulletin/message lists how many bills were authored or co-sponsored by obama as a comparison to clinton. come on. i support obama and he is more productive than clinton, but the comparison i describe is so much misleading that i would assert that ithe author is bordering on a lie. clinton authored more like 177 in a two year period at the end of her first term, co-sponsored tons more, and earmarked others. obama's record is still solid, but one day people using that info will be called out by somone on clinton's side that knows better.

by the way, i'll end this rant with a pdf that i stumbled across. it is unathorized marketing material and does not reinforce the campaign's messaging and brilliant logo... so i do not share this as a handout, but as a reference to anyone who would like to know more about obama's state senate record which catapulted obama into the us senate with the biggest victory on record!

http://manchester.ucsd.edu/misc/obama-state-senate.pdf

_ _ _ _ _ _ _

on the other hand, this link makes for the start to a great handout. i see people creating their own marketing material, and i would advise deviating from the official branding... the look and message of the official campaign reinforced by this site. as an additional tip, at a minimum, there should be the date of the election, the web site address, and the official logo.

http://www.barackobama.com/downloadsv2/files/posters/obama_08.pdf

this is a great pdf because it reinforces the slogan and web site. it would be ideal to switch out the 2-color logo at the bottom for the main red-white-blue logo and add "vote march 4" towards the bottom right corner under the web address. in fact, if there was an artists with indesign, i would also suggest adding bullets to the bottom 25%, reducing the image area to emphasize polices from this site important to ohioans. for instance, health care and economy and use the two bullets from barack's commericial. very simple and clean. people don't like to read too much and those who do, will visit the web site. that is why every flyer and poster should have a web address for the main homepage!

messaging parity: the poor man's method of branding. creating material that looks different than the web site, signs people have seen on tv, etc... is less effective than messaging and flyers that do look the same and repeat the same message. a consistent appearance and message is vital in effective marketing campaigns.

~ j

I have an idea that I think may be brilliant but then I am likely arrogant enough to believe that about many of my ideas.

Anyway, I think I will ask folks from areas that have already indicated their support of Obama to write blogs that I can post on my profile and group. They can serve to help the local Obama supporters realize this area is just a microcosm of a country with far greater open-mindedness and diversity than we 'enjoy' here.

Getting the Word Out - You Have the Tools

You might be asking yourself how you can help get the word out about Barack Obama's campaign. You already posess a very effective tool, and you know how to use it.

One of the first things we learn how to do when we get access to the internet, is forward emails from associates along to our friends, family and co-workers. We all know people in states who have upcoming primaries. We have all received the funny stories, unbelievable photographs, inspirational poems and hysterical videos. We have seen ordinary people doing extraordinary things through the words and images we receive.

Knowing the effectiveness of email, marketers offer everything from software and medication to knock off designer watches and real estate in Spain. Most of these 'spam' emails have ended up not reaching us thanks to filters that hold them captive and then delete them on the mail servers across the land. We opt in to receive email from those companies we trust to provide goods and services, hoping to save a few dollars here and there with coupons and special offers. As good friends and neighbors do, we even forward these emails when we know someone is in the market for an item, hoping to save them a few dollars as well.

This type of marketing is referred to as "viral marketing" because it spreads through social contact, from one person to another, many times in multiples, and gets the marketing message out to a vast array of people. Marketers hope that they can send an email that is so compelling, that receivers will feel it is worthy of forwarding.

You possess the power of viral marketing, and you certainly have a compelling message that is worthy of forwarding. So how do you go about sending that message to friends and family, associates and co-workers? You simply, as any good advertising executive will tell you, tell them what is in it for them. Understand where Senator Obama stands on the issues, and spread the word.

How exactly do you do it step by step?
1. Evaluate the issues and concerns of those you know.
2. Match their concerns with the facts presented on the Barack Obama website.
3. Use this campaign website to gather your facts, and include them in your email. In advertising terms, create a headline that is benefit rich and support it with the facts.

Here is an example: I want to send an email to my friend Cindy, who has no health care coverage for herself and her family. An email I might send to her would open with a friendly statement, and contain information I copy/pasted from the website. I would include a link to the page where I got the information, so my friend could click on it and go there for 'the rest of the story'. This email might look like this:

Hi Cindy,

I know you are concerned about getting health care coverage for your family, and I have some good news about your ability to get affordable coverage in the near future. As you may or may not know, I am watching the race for the white house very closely. I agree with where Barack Obama stands on this issue, and thought you might like to know what he is proposing.
Barack Obama's Plan
Quality, Affordable and Portable Coverage for All
Obama's Plan to Cover Uninsured Americans:
Obama will make available a new national health plan to all Americans, including the self-employed and small businesses, to buy affordable health coverage that is similar to the plan available to members of Congress. The Obama plan will have the following features:

Guaranteed eligibility. No American will be turned away from any insurance plan because of illness or pre-existing conditions.

Comprehensive benefits. The benefit package will be similar to that offered through Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP), the plan members of Congress have. The plan will cover all essential medical services, including preventive, maternity and mental health care.

Affordable premiums, co-pays and deductibles.

Subsidies. Individuals and families who do not qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP but still need financial assistance will receive an income-related federal subsidy to buy into the new public plan or purchase a private health care plan.

Simplified paperwork and reined in health costs.

Easy enrollment. The new public plan will be simple to enroll in and provide ready access to coverage.

Portability and choice. Participants in the new public plan and the National Health Insurance Exchange (see below) will be able to move from job to job without changing or jeopardizing their health care coverage.

Quality and efficiency. Participating insurance companies in the new public program will be required to report data to ensure that standards for quality, health information technology and administration are being met.

You can read more about how he intends to follow through with this plan on his website at http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/

I hope you take the time to visit the site. There is a great deal of information there about many issues I am concerned about, and I think you will find it interesting. Please forward this information along to people you know who are concerned about health care.

Your friend,

Debbi

Simply put, if each of us who wish to spread this message of hope, will pick one issue to pass along to friends who will benefit from Barack Obama's plan, and send them an email, encouraging them to 'pass it along', we will make a difference. The more emails we send, the bigger the impact. So use what you know how to do. Use the tools you already possess, which are quite powerful, and put action behind your faith in this message.

Deborah
http://www.grandlakeadvertising.com

Grass Roots Strategies

Remember James Carville's 'war room' for Bill Clinton's campaign and its motto of "It's the economy, stupid!"? Or how about Ronald Reagan's lines of "There you go again", and "I'll not hold your relative youth and inexperience against you" in his debates with Walter Mondale? These tactics and lines were amazingly effective, even to the point of perhaps shifting the momentum of entire campaigns. The purpose of this blog, and its associated group "The Rose Garden" is to mine the collective wisdom of campaign volunteers to uncover nuggets of wisdom for Barack's speeches, campaign tactics, and policies that can make a difference in this campaign.

Most of the formal advising for campaigns comes from political professionals and campaign insiders, often from inside the beltway. While brilliant professionals, there are times when their advice is too deeply steeped in conventional Washington thinking, and is in great need of a fresh breeze of perspective. For me, the idea to do this blog and seek your wisdom emerged the week a few months ago when Barack suggested that it would be useful to sit down and talk with leaders of rogue countries as a way to establish more effective communication and constructive relations. Immediately, Hillary seized on this moment to suggest that it indicated his foreign policy inexperience and naivete. Barack spent the next few days backpedaling, in what appeared to me to be a result of poor advice from his advisors. In the desire to have input on this situation (his poll numbers dropped from this event), this group and blog was borne.

From the Main Streets and side streets around this country, I invite you to contribute your ideas for campaign tactics, speeches, or slogans that may help make the difference in communicating to America why Barack should be President. Have an idea for attracting more women voters--the key battleground for the national primary? This is the place to air it. Have a novel phrasing Barack can use in one of his speeches or debates? Send it in. How about an idea about how to reach the orchid growers of America. Here's a forum for you.

So all of you armchair strategists, policy wonks, debaters, speech writers, and marketers, this is your time, and this is the place to make a difference in this campaign. Should be a lot of fun. Let me hear from you!

Campus Credit Card Marketing
----- Original Message ----
From: "info@affil.org" <info@affil.org>
Sent: Friday, September 14, 2007
Subject: And now for your weekend entertainment

Dear AFFIL Members,

Greetings from AFFIL! CLICK HERE to check out our new animated video parody about campus credit card marketing. Then take the follow-up action steps and PASS IT ON to your friends.

Here’s why campus solicitation matters:

Credit card companies sign up students even if they have little or no income, knowing they'll trigger high "penalty" interest rates and fees. That's where they make their big $$$.

College students, young workers, immigrants, the elderly and others who are not aware of the traps get solicited the most and hit the hardest.

Free t-shirts, frisbees and pizza come at a dangerous cost.
Word-of-Mouth Marketing

I'm very frustrated with the fact that Hillary has succeeded in "labeling" Obama as "inexperienced." Much as Bush "labeled" John Kerry as a "flip-flopper," putting Kerry on the defensive and causing him to respond to the charge every day. Hillary has labeled Obama as "inexperienced," and every mainstream media report on Obama repeats the charge.

Obama and his supporters need to turn his "inexperience" into an asset, not a liability. We also need to define Hillary as what she is: another Gore/Kerry candidate whom Democrats love but who will doom the Democrats in the general election. We need to point out that her "experience" is 15 straight years in Washington, following many years in the Arkansas governor's mansion. She has no recent experience with real people, in real communities, as Obama has. Moreover, her promises to reform healthcare and track down Bin Laden both lack credibility, because she and her husband already had the chance to do both and blew it. Given that she failed to achieve significant healthcare reform when she had a husband in the White House and both houses of Congress firmly Democratic, why should we believe that she'll succeed this time?

Even the Pakistan comments, which have been seen through the "inexperienced" lens, can be turned to Obama's advantage. The media needs to be encouraged to point out that Hillary and Bill had "actionable intelligence" on the whereabouts of Bin Laden 10 years ago and did nothing, while her current statements indicate that, even after 9/11, she still would do nothing if the President of Pakistan refused to act. The American people are on Obama's side when it comes to striking at Bin Laden wherever he might be. Obama needs to put Hillary on the defensive on that point. Unfortunately, the "inexperienced" label continues to stick, so he's the one defending himself.

Above all, we need to point out that all of Hillary's "experience" didn't help her when she was faced with the most important vote she ever cast in the Senate - namely, the vote on authorizing the Iraq invasion. The "inexperienced" candidate got that right, while all of the "experienced" professional politicians got it wrong.

I understand that Obama can't voice all of those charges himself, for fear of seeming to "go negative" on Hillary. But Hillary has "gone negative" on Obama by hoodwinking the media into doing her dirty work for her.

Our efforts need to focus on the media and Democratic primary voters. The best way to do that is via blogs, word-of-mouth marketing, and an organized campaign to get liberal radio to question Hillary's appeal. Right now, Bill Press, Thom Hartman, Stephanie Miller, Ed Schulz, and others seem ready to anoint Hillary as the defacto nominee. These influential liberals and their listeners need to hear from Obama supporters every day. If we can get them to raise concerns about Hillary, the corporate/mainstream media will follow. Hillary needs to be asked difficult questions every day about her vote on Iraq, her inability to achieve healthcare reform the first time, her unwillingness to go after Bin Laden, and her electability. The fact that a huge portion of the population is ambivalent or openly hostile to Hillary should be pointed out. Having half the eligible voters against her on day 1 will seriously undermine her viability as a candidate in the general election and her ability to govern effectively if she actually wins. Hillary will simply continue the polarization of the past seven years, because so many people dislike her and aren't going to change their minds. Obama, on the other hand, could actually unite the country as President. We need to voice those concerns on the liberal talk shows, in the blogs, and with everyone we meet, hoping to cause a ripple effect that reaches the mainstream media.

Unpolished Perspective....

As I survey the press and material availible on this website, I am struck by how it superficially shows Barack Obama in the most flattering light. It creates the visual and print lexicon of his campaign. The sound bites, talking points, and incessant requests for financial support. This is not to mention pep rally enthusiam and banners and sloganeering. American campaigning at its most tiresome and superficial.

It is completely lacking in critical information and discussion. Is this community of Obama supporters the equivalent of a fan club? Will we buy Obama and wear his advertisment like a Nascar billboard? Will we buys magazines with his face plastered on it and join in the rallies for the sake of joining into mob excitement?

It is possible for the campaign to damn the caution and create a dynamic environment for gathering information, discussion regarding issues, brainstorming of vision, and above all, cultivation of a deeper sense of belonging than that which is availible to those that share the latest and greatest designer underwear.

Remember, supporting Obama is not about buying the right product or being a winner for once. It may be about taking responsibility, finally, for the multidimensional world that we have created. It may be about waking up and clarifying the complexity of the current geopolitics and global psychology. The truth is that this campaign is a completely made up abstraction around an emerging individual human being, and that we can define it as having greater depth and reach than whter, brighter teeth and laundry.
