Until very recently, a photograph of myself and John Edwards hung on the wall of my office. Before his campaign imploded in Iowa, I’d done some work for the Senator in California. On the night of that particular picture, I’d been standing in the garden of a beautiful house in Beverly Hills, where supporters were hosting a cocktail party to raise money for his long shot bid. Edwards came up behind me and grabbed me by the arm. “You, come with me,” he said. Thinking it was a security guard who’d mistaken me for a trespasser, I’d just about dropped my drink and was about to protest. But when I turned around, Edwards had a huge grin on his face. “Get rid of your name tag,” he said, and I did so just in time for the photographer to snap a shot of the two of us.

Earlier this week, I took that photo down. What had been the pride of my office wall had become a bitter reminder of Senator Edwards’ personal indiscretions, a joke for passers-by to point to and say, “hey, isn’t that the guy with the sick wife who knocked up a campaign worker?”

Edwards’ precipitous decline from Democratic golden boy to the stereotypical can’t-keep-his-pants-on politician has left me awestruck. Why is it that Edwards, like so many politicians before him, fell prey to the temptations of power? The short answer is that it’s a sense of entitlement. Edwards said in his mea culpa press release that he’d begun to feel as though he were “special.” Read: entitled. Being in positions of power and influence has an incredible effect on the ego, and that’s why we’ve seen so many politicians getting caught with their hands in the proverbial cookie jar. For the Bob Neys and Ted Stevens of the world, it’s the allure of money. For the Bill Clintons, Gary Harts, and John Edwards, its…well, it’s another vice.

The truth is that John Edwards went from leading the Democratic idea debate to just another political sideshow. He’s a supermarket tabloid cover, only worse: in his case, the normally ridiculous “UFOs Spotted at White House” headlines actually got it right. And what’s worse is that Elizabeth Edwards has become the pity case that she never wanted to be, even through her bout with what will certainly be terminal cancer. Too intelligent and too dignified to play the role of Dina McGreevy, she’s nonetheless been featured in the all-too-typical People Magazine “My Struggle” cover piece.

In another few months or years, few will remember that Edwards- for better or for worse- raised the bar on national healthcare, essentially cementing the issue into the Democratic platform. He focused the Democratic spotlight on infrastructure and rural investment, two areas that the big-government Bush Administration managed to defund and neglect for the past eight years.

Fight Back with Focus

Sen. John McCain has a long history of lying to his constituents. If we can harken back to his heroic days in Vietnam, let's then fast forward to the 1980's and the Keating Five*, (Senator McCain was one of the five involved in the S&L scandal). Or his own party in his home state of Arizona calling for his censure in 2006.

I recently heard a pundit on MSNBC say that the Republicans are very good at being focused and consistent with their messages, no matter how untruthful the claim, or how nuanced and shallow the topic, everyone gets on board with the mantra, giving it the credibility it does not deserve.

Senator Obama has responded with denouncements. But when McCain tells out-and-out lies about Barack, "Mr. Maverick" turns the remarkable events of Obama's recent tour of Europe and the Mideast into a sophomoric mocking of his rival's "celebrity", it's time to set the record straight.

Obama's ad response to the "celebrity" issue is very clever, but it focuses on McCain's theme of the week, not Obama's. The Obama campaign's response to the Republican Senator's attack ads and negative jabs on the campaign, should be that of outrage – by Mr. Obama, David Plouf and the heavy hitters of endorsers such as the Clintons, the Kennedys, Govs. Richardson, Sebelius, Kaine and Rendell, Al Gore, Speaker Nancy Peliosi – the whole team. Let's get them in a room together – unified –on camera, facing the viewers and calling McCain on his baggage. The public has a right to know more about the real John McCain in clear, direct terms.

The backdrop has signatures of the backbone of Obama's successful rise to the Democratic Party's nomination: us, the grass roots, volunteers and supporters. On the national stage, for the general election, WE NEED THE PARTY LEADERS TO STAND UNIFIED.

Speaking of the Clintons, why are there still reports in the mainstream media about her "bitter" supporters? I heard a comment on the news today that Clinton supporters (or was it the Clintons themselves?) believe that had John Edwards confessed to his affair before the Iowa primary, Hillary would have won the nomination. This is not unity, folks. Or reality.

How can such a well oiled campaign such as Obama's allow the Hillary factor to continue to try and dilute his leadership and rightful place as the party's nominee for President? Reign her in before it's too late.

It's impressive that Obama is responding to current events "as if" he was the President. I understand that line of thinking.

But first, Senator Obama, you have to win the election.

Obama Should Name a Range of Cabinet Choices, Nothing Final, but Get Some Names Out There...

Today, one Blue Dog Democrat, from the Yahoo! group by that name, which is not connected to mybarackobama.com pointed out that Dewey might have lost in 1948 because he named a Cabinet, but Dewey didn't lose that election solely because he named a Cabinet. That was 60 years ago. Times have changed. Many other factors beat Dewey...

Things are more urgent in 2008; the need for Cabinet level perspectives is paramount, and would precipitate a lot of voters to Obama's side, if he did it in a non presumptuous way, and made it clear that he was opening up the discussion in a fair and egalitarian way.

Personally, I believe we are in such an infernal mess internationally that the Secretary of State job has taken on more importance than the Vice President, and that we need a diplomat with a lot of international exposure, experience and track record. That would be New Mexico Governor Bill
Richardson, by a long shot....

Attorney General is another vital one: California Attorney General Jerry Brown, by a long shot, in my opinion. His record vis a vis Consumer Protection is stunning and is also sterling. Edwards is out of the picture (maybe like Eliot Spitzer is out of the picture, because of that Southern Male Brain?)

Health Secretary or FDA Commissioner? Very vital. FDA reports to Secretary of Health, and I believe strongly, if he would take the job and wouldn't see it as a step down, DR. Howard Dean III, M.D. would be the best; this is someone I trust a lot, especially at FDA to oversee fully 25% of the US Economy, which is either food or drugs. The corporate manipulation of FDA is killing America and big chunk of the rest of the world.

Even if Obama's top advisors are too scared of announcing Cabinet choices or a range of Cabinet choices, which they should not be at all, we can still talk about them, while we are not convincing fence sitters to vote for Obama.

The best tool I know of are his speeches, like the Berlin Speech, which has convinced many of my fence sitter friends, and for the devotees in Santa Fe, they in turn have printed it out and used it to convince other fence sitters. I managed over great difficulties to publish the entire Berlin Speech in the Santa Fe Sun News, of which I am the Managing Editor. When I was hunting down the precise complete text thereof, I couldn't even find it at mybarackobama.com, so I published it here a few blogs ago....

I am a member of about 70 different Obama groups, and I have noticed a tendency for the most active members to wallow in self congratulatory B.S., nitpick over what should be psychoanalytic conjecture, hairsplitting, noshing, chatting, and mere linguistic controversy, means that all doing this are entirely missing the point that we have an election to win.

All of the yukking-it-up in the world is not going to win it. It means take the time to pound the pavement, take literature that you yourself print out from various sites, and take it door-to-door in your neighborhood.

If we don't do this, we can still easily lose this election in November. Make no mistake. It is only about 90 days away, our supreme test!

When a local mix of residents combine their grassroots passion with progressive ideas what do you get? A good old fashion picnic with a tried and true StarBucks concept, a PICNIC IN THE PARK Drive-Thru Voter Registration & Meet The Candidates Event, SUNDAY, AUGUST 17th 2pm-7pm at Tualatin Community Park, Tualatin. It's an old fashion POTLUCK and it's BYOB - bring your own BBQ meats, beverages and beach chairs.

Congressional Senate Candidate, Jeff Merkley is a special guest and will talk one-on-one with picnickers as a key stop in the Tualatin/Tigard community part of his 100 Towns Tour for Change across Oregon. Tigard Representative, Larry Galizio is the key note speaker. Local candidates Jessica Adamson (Sherwood/ Wilsonville) and Jeff Barker (Aloha) will also join in the afternoon festivities.

The event following on the heels of the the Annual Tualatin Crawfish Festival a week prior serves up a fun relaxing afternoon with Obama and Democrat supporters from all over Washington County. Children will enjoy the new playground area with decorative gym climbs, and a scenic viewing area overlooking the beautiful Tualatin River. Jeff Merkley is a special guest and will talk one-on-one with picknickers as a key stop in the Tualatin/Tigard community as part of his 100 Towns Tour for Change across Oregon. Merkley leads Gordon Smith in the latest poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports for the hotly contested US Senate seat while another internal poll shows Merkley surging ahead by 11 points among voters who could rate both candidates.

Rep. Larry Galizio (Tigard) is the key note speaker along with Lupita Maurer from WashCoDems tentatively committed. Local candidates Jeff Barker (Aloha), Jessica Adamson (Sherwood/ Wilsonville) and Ron Morgan, Field Organzier from WashCoDems will also be attending.

The event following on the heels of the the Annual Tualatin Crawfish Festival a week prior serves up a fun relaxing afternoon with Obama and Democrat supporters from all over Washington County. I am not a fan of the National Enquirer, for obvious reasons, but I find the story on John Edwards and his secret love child to be credible. See http://www.nationalenquirer.com/sen_john_edwards_caught_with_mistress_and_love_child_in_la_hotel/celebrity/65193. This is my analysis:

First of all, it has alleged the facts with specificity.

Secondly, I don't think the National Enquirer has plans to make John Edwards rich by letting him win a libel suit against it.

Thirdly, neither John Edwards nor Elizabeth Edwards went to the press to speak out vehemently against the allegation, even when they are sufficiently intelligent, capable and articulate in representing themselves. After all, they are both lawyers in their own right.

Finally, this is a case that can be proven readily by means of a paternity DNA test – an easy case for John and Elizabeth Edwards to win, if the National Enquirer had fabricated this sordid tale.

Can you imagine the amount of damages they can sue for and collect if John and Elizabeth Edwards had been the subject of defamation? This is money in the bank – big money.

We have a HOME, yeah! However there is much work that needs to be done and we NEED your HELP URGENTLY!

Calling the Obama calvary...What do you need you ask? How Can I help? What What What???

First, review the NEEDS WISH LIST below. Our first priority is LASER Printers with their corresponding TONER CARTRIDGES. Next, desk, chairs and shelves; and a large refrigerator in excellent condition should be sufficient for the office needs. Also at the top of the list is rolls of butcher paper, and red, white and blue poster paints to make many, many posters! We'll take any custom or homemade Obama posters that we can hang on the wall, too.

Starting today, Friday, here is where you can help (and spread the word out to the Oregon Obama community). We need lots of volunteers to help set up and organize the office, everything from cleaning, setting up desks, filing cabinets, shelves and office furniture. Getting computers online, organizing and stocking the office, kitchen and maintenance supplies, in addition to a supply/storage room, even making posters.

We will accept any and all donations or contributions, bring in whatever you have on hand especially office supplies. Again, refer to the Needs Wish List below! Someone will be at the office to accept donations everyday from 10am-9pm.

As a reminder as well, if you're able to, make it a point to bring along lots of SNACKS, FOOD, and BEVERAGES to feed our hard working volunteers, fellows and Field Leaders every time you come to the Obama office. They will appreciate it very very much!

Finally we’ll need many, many volunteers to make phone calls starting Sunday to get the word out about the new office. We'll concentrate on outfitting the office with everything we need and get the word out to our network of supporters throughout Washington County and city of Portland.

We're back in business Obama peeps, we're taking it to the streets and we're not stopping until we get BARACK OBAMA in the White House right! I attended my first meeting this Tuesday. The turnout was fantastic, people were motivated, stimulating and driven campaign supporters with a wide variety of experience including newbies like myself! No experience required except DESIRE and PASSION to insure Barack Obama gets elected come this November and is the President who has his hand on the bible and says "I Do" in January!

You will not be commanding the ship yourself. I will help you, the Obama Field Organizers Alejandro and Caleb will train you, and together WE will work our communities to register new voters, Get Out the VOTE and involve people with a variety of Obama events! We'll all learn together, train each other and have FUN being a visible presence. You'll learn enough to be "dangerous" but not enough to trip over yourself!

John Edwards would consider being Vice President Again

John Edwards could have taken the Jim Webb route when NPR grilled him yesterday about his interest in reprising his role as the Democratic vice presidential nominee, but instead he said this: "I am prepared to seriously consider anything, anything he asks me to do for our country."

If Barack Obama were to choose Edwards, it would create an unusual situation in American politics. Very rarely does a losing vice presidential nominee land on someone else's ticket in a future election. Edwards would be the fourth person ever to do this, and the first since 1916.

The others:

Thomas Hendricks, the Democratic governor of Indiana first ran as Samuel Tilden's running mate in the 1876 election. The Tilden-Hendricks ticket actually won the popular vote, but Republican Rutherford Hayes maneuvered his way to a controversial 185-184 victory in the Electoral College. Hendricks sat out the 1880 election, but was chosen in 1884 as Grover Cleveland's running mate. The Democrats narrowly defeated Maine's James Blaine in the general election, but the 66-year-old Hendricks died eight months after taking office.

Adlai Stevenson I was a congressman from Illinois when the Democrats nominated him to run with Grover Cleveland in 1892, when Cleveland was seeking to reclaim the White House after a four-year absence. Stevenson was placed on the ticket to appease the party base, and he and Cleveland went on to defeat incumbent Republican Benjamin Harrison and his running mate, Whitelaw Reid, in the fall. But when Cleveland stepped aside in 1896, Democrats snubbed Stevenson at their convention and instead nominated the charismatic William Jennings Bryan for president. Bryan lost to William McKinley but emerged again in 1900 as the Democratic nominee and – with most prominent Democrats unwilling to run for VP in what seemed to a be a doomed election for their party – turned to Stevenson as a way of uniting the party base.

Charles Fairbanks was chosen in 1904 to run with Theodore Roosevelt on the Republican ticket in what proved to be one of the more uneventful general elections in American history, with Roosevelt and Fairbanks trouncing Democrats Alton B. Parker and Henry Gassaway Davis (at 81, the oldest person ever nominated for national office by a major party). Roosevelt essentially chose his own successor in 1908, but passed over Fairbanks for William Howard Taft. Fairbanks reemerged in 1916, though, when he was tapped to run with Charles Evans Hughes, who very nearly unseated Woodrow Wilson.

One other name could also be on this list is Rufus King, who represented New York in the Senate and who was the Federalist Party's nominee for VP in both 1804 and 1808, losing both elections. But unlike the others on this list, King ran both times with the same presidential nominee, Charles Pinckney.

Hillary: She ran half a race, her ultimate downfall. With higher aspirations and a recent history of conflict with Obama, not to mention a newly formed animosity between Bill and Barack, Hillary might not be the best choice. Also, she and her husband would be very difficult to control. However, she did acquire more than half of the primary votes and has faired quite well in many of the swing states, and has the backing of many different demographics within the Democratic Party (Woman, elderly…). Also, the Clinton name definitely brings name recognition on the national scale (for better or for worse).

Odds: 9:1 - Hillary may have some of the power in the swing states and a large following, but there are several other VP-candidates out there that could pick up a good percentage of the vote.

Jim Webb: This first-term Junior Senator from Virginia has been nothing but stellar as a Liberal attack dog in the Senate. He would bring Obama certainly a lot of Military credentials, a history of conflict with McCain, and the support of a VERY important swing state as the senator of Virginia. However, if Obama is looking for a less partisan, more experienced, pro-gun control, and more controllable Vice-President, Barack should look elsewhere.

Odds: 3:1 - Since joining the Senate, Webb has been fighting, if not harder, then just as hard as Obama for reforms that are also important to Barack. Also, don’t forget his military history (that can’t be Swiftboat-ed) and Virginia.

Chuck Hagel: This Senator has been the “Lieberman” cross-over for the Dems. He has seen eye-to-eye with Majority many times in the Senate, especially against continuation of the war. However, on many social issues, particularly abortion, he is quite conservative.

Odds: 20:1 - Hagel may be anti-war and anti-partisanship, but he is still a Republican.

Bill Richardson: He would bring in the Hispanic vote, and provide Obama with support by bring years of executive experience, foreign policy experience, and the support of the “Clinton” side of the party. However, he was the worst in debates. Period. Not to mention, it might be difficult to try and persuade those semi-xenophobic, possibly racist independents out there to vote for an African-American president with a Hispanic-American VP (just being honest).

Odds: 23:1 - “My mind is mush.” Enough said.

obama/clinton dream ticket fraud

With Obama officially clinching the nomination, we must unify behind him. Now's the time to remember that the differences between policies Clinton and Obama proposed are not nearly as significant than the policy differences between Obama and John McCain. This is now a Democrat versus Republican policy battle and we already know where the policies of the republican party have led under Bush. As Obama pointed out in his speech Tuesday night, we must remember that McCain is perceived as a maverick or moderate within his party. He continues to point to the one or two differences he has had with Bush in the last eight years. Yet, to become his party's nominee in 2008 where he failed many times before, John McCain bought into the Republican party with his heart and soul as he saw his chances faiding and has, in fact, voted over 90% of the time in agreement with George W. Bush. A vote against Obama is a vote for Bush's Third Term. While some dissappointed Clinton supporters will act and speak out of emotion, already many admit that they intend to vote the the selected Democrat.

There has been much speculation of a "dream ticket." Clinton, as I note in an earlier blog, breathed life into this idea because the time came when even she recognized she could not win in a general election without Obama. However, as I note in an earlier blog, this is not true when Obama is the nominee. There are many well suited candidates for a running mate that will benefit Obama greater with respects to the electoral map and reaching out to working class and potentially to woman as well.

The truth remains that Obama has won for many reasons and this end result astounds me, someone who strongly backed my candidate since researching him in December. He overtook the lead from the "establishment's candidate." Clinton is someone that as first lady was rumored to run for senate in a big state to help support her future bid as president. The Kerry campaign was so poorly executed that many were left believing that the Democrats were throwing the election for a Clinton run and a Clinton win in 2008. The Clinton branding was strong and it's longevity made is seemingly impossible to overcome... 20 years of market share domination and now a new little enterprise would fend for not some, but the majority of that share. Today, it hard to believe anyone could pick off Coke or P&G. But, that is exactly what Obama accomplished. Not only did he run one of the most brilliant marketing campaigns in my time, he succeed where no person of color has succeeded in a leading nation. While some leading nations have appointed women, what I recently realized is that Obama broke a barrier that extends long past the United States.

There are petitions and emotional claims to defend the "dream ticket" and most of which stems from Clinton circles. Let's not forget that Obama won as the "change candidate" and he has brilliantly represented "new politics." Many of Obama's supporters, and rightly so, believe that the addition of anyone who epitomizes "old politics" would jeapardize our mission and cloud the message, leaving a obvious weak point of attack for McCain like the small thermal exhaust port that left the Deathstar in Star Wars open to destruction. I can almost see McCain now, "Clinton on this ticket... that's not change we can believe in." * insert insidious smirk*

Among the emotional pleas I have read are these, and given that I label them as emotional, I assert that they lack logic:

"The only way that Obama is going to reach out to the working class, Hispanics, and win the swing states is with Clinton on the ticket (he ignored Kentucky and West Virginia, so those states he has already lost without her)."

FALSE

First of all, Puerto Rico is not a state and that is precisely the contest that made Clinton's popular vote neck and neck with Obama. Puerto Ricans don't vote in the presidential election. They voted against being a state a decade ago, as they have voted twice before that when given the chance to enter into the union. I am boggled why they are awarded more delegates in the primary than many real states that do vote in the general election. Richardson and Clinton can reach out to Hispanic voters even without being on the ticket.

There are four governors in key states that each would help reach out to such voters and bring along a needed swing state. Among these four easy picks are Governor Richardson who has served under Bill Clinton, yet he may be my least favorite of the four easy picks. Ted Strickland could help with rural working class as he helped Clinton in Ohio because he is from rural Ohio and has served in the church and military. Strickland may sit at the top of my list.

Clinton does not come with a key state. Arkansas can be won by the Clinton's campaigning on behalf of Obama without her being on the ticket... as can other communities. Clinton does not need to be on a ticket to endorse and campaign heavily for a candidate to unify her party... a party, some assert, she invoked much division.What Clinton does need to do is embrace Obama for America and throw as much heart and resilience into this campaign as she did when she remained in the running for reasons I point out in my earlier blog.

Pennsylvania voted for Kerry due to the strong campaigning by governor Ed Rendell who is the same governor that campaigned for Clinton. It is widely believed that with similar campaigning by Ed Rendell in his state, any democrat can pick up the winning numbers that Kerry picked up against Bush.

New York and California are key states democrats win by wide margins as did Kerry. Although it is true Clinton won in the primary it is illogical deduction to believe that any democrat, unless that democrat was running against Ronald Reagan, could fail at winning both states handedly.

A presidential race is not won with West Virginia or Kentucky. But, if Obama is able to turn the Carolinas which Kerry failed to do even with Edwards on his ticket, that would make a difference. Obama won more votes in North and South Carolina against Clinton than the number of votes cast for McCain and Huckabee combined. The states Obama wants to tun in addition to the Carolinas are the Western States of Colorada, etc. Obama polls better in the west than rural areas like West Virgina and Kentucky where inevitably some degree of fear applies. But as I mention above, Ted Strickland comes with a key swing state and could easily reach out to the working class and Christian voters... perhaps more effectively than Clinton.

Governor Bill Ritter, a popular, young democratic in a historically conservative state, would be a better choice to aid in the West and Governor Kathleen Sebelius would successfully reach out to the identical segments that were fascinated by Clinton without compromising the message of new politics: again working class and women. Most female voters in exit polls admitted that gender was a significant impact on their decision. No other voting segment admitted to gender or race affecting the vote. Add almost any woman to a republican or democratic ticket and you will likely lure a great percentage of those voters who responded this way in exit polls.

"It would be a guaranteed 18 million votes for the Democratic party, and there is no way John McCain would have a chance."

With this logic, or lack thereof, Obama could win with almost any running mate. While it is true that Clinton won over 17 million votes, so did Obama. In many states, Obama won more votes than Huckabee and McCain combined. To suggest that all democrats that voted for Clinton will literally stay home or vote for McCain, is not plausible. Throughout history the results in the primary does not necessarily translate into similar results in the general. That is why at this point there is no guarantee that Obama can turn the Carolinas away from Republican grasps. But, based on the primary numbers, it is the best chance the Democrats have had in decades and decades. Already, Obama's grass-roots activity is kicking up to register new democrats. This is how he closed the gap in states that Clinton was leading by 20points or more and this is how Obama won the majority of contests and clinched the democratic nomination for president. A historical achievement not only for the United States, but something that many leading nations have never done before... appoint a person of color to lead their nation.

Am I against Clinton? Not entirely, but partially. She does represent everthing I dislike about Washington Politics as usual and I don't think her record of success outweighs her record of failure to follow through with promises made to the nation and later to New York. While putting her into a position of Vice President may realistically strip her of all power, I don't want her a heart beat away from seizing the most powerful position in the world.

Now it is your turn. I selected four easily identifiable candidates for a VP nomination: Strickland of Ohio, Ritter of Colorado, Sebelius of Kansas, and Richardson of New Mexico. As Governors, each brings executive leadership and management that no senator can honestly claim with the exeption of Obama who, as I note in an earlier blog, was the only senator among Clinton and McCain to exemplify extraordinary executive leadership by leading his multi-million dollar enterprise, Obama for America, to success. However, who do you think Obama should select? If it is Clinton, then please have better support than the emotional defenses I discount above.

Barak Obama just clinched the nomination for the Democratic Party!! He is such a great orator, and my only wish was that Hilary Clinton would have endorsed Barak Obama and supported him after he had clinched the nomination. I think Obama did an excellent job at recognizing Hilary Clinton and saying that she helped become a better candidate. I am very impressed and I am looking forward to seeing who he decides to name as his running mate. ((my secret hope is for John Edwards.....))

If you think it wasn’t calculated, think again.

Today, John Edwards, the former Senator of North Carolina and Democratic Presidential candidate, endorsed Barack Obama for President of the United States. Immediately after the announcement was made, the cable news networks began to speculate about whether Edwards’ endorsement of Obama was spontaneous (decided today) or calculated (decided days or weeks ago). While Barack Obama and his campaign advisors may never admit it, I’m here to tell you that this move was 100% calculated and implemented to perfection by the Obama campaign, possibly their greatest, most effective strategy of the campaign thus far.

Please make no mistake about it. The John Edwards endorsement was not a spur of the moment, spontaneous thing. In fact, what we saw from the Obama campaign was a very deliberate, very calculated, very well thought out strategy to take Hillary Clinton completely out of the game.

In the run up to the West Virginia primary, I had doubts about Obama’s strategy. Why was he choosing to ignore West Virginia? Why would he not campaign there? Why would he go to Missouri just three days before the primary instead of campaigning in West Virginia? Well, now we know why... Now it all makes sense.

Think about it. Last week, after remaining silent since dropping out of the race back in January, John Edwards came out of nowhere and conducted interviews with all the major news networks. And for what? To basically say nothing. He refused to endorse a candidate. He praised both candidates for their qualifications, and he refused to pressure Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race in favor of the presumptive nominee.

So what was the purpose in him coming out? It was to build a buzz for tonight’s endorsement. It was to make John Edwards relevant again. It was to get his name back out there so that his endorsement would actually mean something to the campaign. Already a major player in the Democratic Party, John Edwards became the one to watch once again.

But the Obama campaign’s strategy didn’t stop there. Barack Obama all but ignored West Virginia. He made one campaign stop there, essentially ceding the state primary victory to Hillary Clinton.

Why?

Well, first of all, because he knew a Clinton win in West Virginia wouldn’t affect the math. He would still have a sizable lead in pledged delegates, popular vote, and states won. Barack Obama also knew, however, that John Edwards had 19 delegates pledged to him, delegates who could choose any candidate they wanted to support when Edwards dropped out of the race. Hillary Clinton having netted 12 delegates in her win over Barack Obama in West Virginia, Obama could easily erase her gains by collecting most, if not all, of Edwards’ pledged delegates, making West Virginia, in essence, a wash. So why spend time, money, and resources in a state that you probably wouldn’t have won anyway? Why not just win the endorsement of one person and collect more delegates than you ever could in West Virginia?

What we saw in the last few weeks of the Obama campaign is political strategy executed to perfection. Announcing John Edwards’ endorsement at this point in the campaign was a genius move. Not only does it lend Barack Obama some credibility in winning the elusive white, working class vote, not only did it deflect attention away from Hillary Clinton’s victory in West Virginia and her one-on-one interviews on all the major news networks afterward, but it also put the nail in the coffin of the Clinton campaign.

Yeah, they may try to diminish it as just another endorsement, but it’s not. This is the endorsement of the champion of the white, working class. This is a former Senator, a very popular former Presidential candidate, and someone who almost became our Vice-President. In fact, this is a man who may very well become our next Vice-President. So, no, this wasn’t just any endorsement. It was one of the biggest endorsements of the campaign and the final blow to the Clinton campaign.

So, my advice to Hillary: bow out graciously, head back to New York, and run for governor in 2010.

And my advice to Barack: could this be a sign of things to come? Maybe an Obama-Edwards ticket?... I’m just saying.

The security of our future depends on our open and honest sharing of racial feelings and concerns. Our society will only suffer if racial issues, no matter how seemingly insignificant, are continuously ignored in any illusion of shared prosperity no matter how inclusive it might be. The frankness needed for sustainable friendships and family relations is no less requisite for community relations as well. Why Still Canvassing for Obama in North Carolina?

Charlotte, North Carolina May 2nd 2008 – Even after a double-digit loss for Obama in Pennsylvanian primaries, I decided still to head back on the road to work for his campaign and to get out the vote in the remaining contests. I flew in from Washington DC to Charlotte NC, on weekends of April 28th and May 3rd for a final push; this was about 3 days before the crucial North Carolina and Indiana May 6th primaries.

Canvassing for Obama, listening to FOX NEWS radio...

During the first week, I worked under enormous pressure as I canvassed in the streets of the city of Charlotte; in places like Albermarle Rd, Central Ave and Sharon Amity Areas. I remember listening to Fox News (very popular radio on the Carolinians’ waves) while it run tirelessly its daily “breaking news” at every other top of the hour: “The Rev. Jeremiah Wright appearance at the DC’s National Press Club”. Wow… I had to hear that unpleasant propaganda and still be encouraged in my rental car around. I definitely was embedded with hope that I can convince and to talk to voters about Senator Barack Obama in spite of what I know they might have heard before I got to their door steps.

How in the world a press organization can go that low, making a non-political figure’s speech a campaign trail’s headline and even more a daily “every top of the hour” breaking news for the entire day. Fox News gave that Wright’s appearance in DC the same amount of attention they gave with a media frenzy to Paris Hilton Arrest’s episode or the Anna Nicole Court’s Case … Even more, Fox wanted us to believe that the Rev. Wright’s conference was all they had to cover for the day.

Well, Senator Barack Obama and the campaign made it clear, thank God, that moving forward, that although him being his former pastor at the Trinity Church of Christ, Jeremiah. Wright’s relationship to the candidate won’t be the same and that he does not speak for our campaign nor does he represent the Senator’s views. That weekend’s trip in Charlotte NC was my biggest challenge in my entire canvassing experience for Barack Obama. Keep in mind here that I have been in the cold streets of Candia, Manchester, Nashua, NH; I organized and called volunteers and voters in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhoods; I planted yard signs along streets in Virginia and helped register thousands on the Virginia Primary Baloot for Obama; I took a high attitude and poised look while talking, at their door steps, to resilient Texans, even those who say to me they will never vote for a black man. Driving around the streets of Charlotte for a door-to-door visit to voters seemed hard because I personally had to hear the whole Jeremiah Wright’s live-speech and a bogus post-speech news commentator’s analysis that went on for the day.

What do North Carolinians know about this 2008 election?

Yet, North Carolinians seem, from my talks with many, to be more thoughtful than the right-wing media pundits suggest and were more leaning towards Senator Obama than the Clintons have calculated. In every household, there is this belief that it’s time for North Carolinians to exercise their judgment in voting after many early contests took place (41 already). They are concerned about the Economy (particularly the gas price and the unemployment); they are looking for a government that John Edwards promised some of them to fight for. Can Obama carry the fight on poverty they so much believed the Senator from Chapel Hill with? In any case it seems to be just an Obama’s fight now. Many voters I talked to are doubtful about the Clintons’ message regarding fighting for the working men and women…for fighting poverty in America; also most voters lost trust in them given their deceiving showing for the last 2 months (Bill and Hillary) on the campaign trail.

There is that lack of discipline among the Clintons’ surrogates that seem to bother most voters here in NC; their choices to use negative ads against their party’s fellows to bait voters on TV, their SNL show’s characterization and their many evening TV appearances before the primaries were not well welcomed by southern voters here, although seen as a fair game by the media.

The long fight between Democrats has become a disservice to the American People. Voters are also very critical of the lies they heard (the Hillary landing in Bosnia under sniper attacks) and promises made in order to pander to voters (gas tax from summer to labor day) in order to win an election. In deed, Hillary Clinton has poorly sold that ineffective idea to the voters while the Washington Post was reporting last week that “this gas tax would save to an average American household only 18$ of their pocket money, according to a study made by an independent organization on the proposal. Republican John McCain who inspired Clinton on his first vocal economic idea of the 2008 decision, cannot at this time be counted as that so-called “Maverick” people got used to see from the 2000 elections; he has given many voters many reasons to believe he cannot deliver on those economic solutions given the stakes.

He and Hillary have launched the proposal to continue gaining terrain after they unfairly attacked Obama about his former pastor’s comments (not his) and mischaracterized what he said about voters who are frustrated with their government’s business dealings. So, calling the straight talk bus rider a maverick in 2008 is like comparing the so-aligned with the distrust that the American people have towards their government to a fresh face senator who can still pull in a 35 thousands people’s rally in Philadelphia on a night while trailing in the polls, and it is like ignoring what the libertarian and registered-republican candidate Ron Paul has to offer as far as patriotism, suppression of big government and his anti-war sentiments as to compare them to a John McCain’s line of speech on Iraq and his so-out of touch views of our economy.

This is what's at stake…in this election

I have made these costly trips to Charlotte NC, knowing and still believing that we will prevail, even if the status quo will continue to resist. I still see as many other Obama canvassers I met there from SC, Georgia and Texas and the wonderful staff at the Elizabeth Ave/ Hawthorne Office: Santiago or Molly… that we can deliver a victory all the way to the democratic nomination. From my past experience with the Obama Camp, I would challenge those supporters who feel like giving up on this journey. I have got one thing to say: I have canvassed for a half-year in the cold and icy streets of New Hampshire and I’ve organized voters in high-crime quarters and corners of Metro stations in Boston Massachusetts; I have planted lawn signs along local streets and have supported in Virginia and collected petition’s signatures for Obama. 30 thousands signatures were needed for to put the canditate’s name on the Virginia ballot; I also canvassed in Arlington and Fort-Worth, Texas.

During all these episodes, I have always in mind that if we can win a state primary or a state caucus, it is not just because of the candidate’s message but because of the hard work we can as campaign staffers and volunteers put forth at the grassroots level. That civic engagement alone has been effective and powerful in convincing the undecided voters. So, I say to these fellow supporters, hold your head up, suit your gear back up and run; continue the fight!

We are in fact the backbone of this campaign; a movement that enlists Americans who are determined to see change in the ways our politics affects our citizenry. We are citizens who want to challenge the status quo in place in Washington DC and in our home states leadership. By the status-quo I also mean: people (voters) who will always wait until the last minute hoping to be helped (the old school way) in their choice for a candidate: The old school way suggests that a campaign was properly laid out on the issues, voters ought to be fed with some last minute negative ad; people who do not vote based on sound judgment, facts and candidate’s profile, but by name recognition, who are proud to be fanatics or who vote for a contender based on age group, racial or gender preferences…. The only way to win against the political establishment represented by Hillary Clinton and John McCain is to go after them with a coalition of voters (all racial backgrounds) like we have been doing since the beginning in Iowa and New Hampshire. The reason why people campaign and vote for Obama is not because somehow America now wants a black candidate as a symbol of change…

Our Movement is not about color or gender, It's the American Deal for Generations

The reason I met a bunch of Irish-Americans in New England, campaigning with me for Obama, the reason why 85% of the staff and volunteers at the Manchester NH Office were Whites; the reason why we won states with working class citizens like Wisconsin, Virginia, Maryland, Washington State by big margins; the reason why we conquered many other majority-white states like Utah, Nebraska, Idaho, North Dakota versus states with whites-blacks demographic splits like Mississippi, South Carolina, Alabama or New Orleans… The reason why we won states with urban, suburban and rural working class population like Illinois, Connecticut, Colorado, Delaware is because Americans want a new face in the oval office to set the country in a new direction. The reason why we delivered states with large percentages of anti-war activists like Vermont, Minnesota, Maine… and Virginia is because the American people have decided to turn the page for a new chapter in the American foreign policy and diplomacy..

Now Americans abroad (Europe, Africa, Asia etc.) are all for Barack Obama results indicate; He won in off-the continental USA…In Alaska, Hawaii and in the US territories of Virgin Islands and in Guam. I would like to thank my friends from Charlotte and Raleigh who made my trip easier and pleasant. Thanks to the Lubamba family for their hospitality… And with a little bit more of these moments of challenge like the North Carolina’s episode, we won’t just win an election but will transform this country.

Using MSNBC's number - 27 superdelegates to shut out Clinton

On March 28, over at Chris Weigant's blog, Chris asked his readers to place their bets (in quatloos) when Clinton would drop out of the Presidential race. Well, I've done pretty well so far. I predicted that Obama would surpass Clinton in Superdelegates before the West Virginia primary (got it right) and several of my delegate totals from the primaries were darn close (I didn't do so well on my original delegate estimate for Indiana). Also, I was only 1 day off for the John Edwards endorsement of Obama. My final prediction is Clinton drops out on June 16, just 31 days from now.

Just when I start to like Hillary the human being, the politician comes back.

I just watched Brian Williams interview with Hillary Clinton after her huge win in West Virginia. It was a charming peice and for the most part showed Hillary in a favorable light. It showed her as the fighter we have or at least I have come to admire. For all the bad things you can say about Mrs. Clinton, you can’t say she is a quiter. In my opinion, that never surrender attitude is the most alluring quality that she possess’. But I think it may be that same quality that brings out the most unattractive side to Senator Clinton as well.

The win at any cost Clinton strategy. For the sake of not going through all the scenarios that have taken place within this campaign that I consider to be the scorched earth policy by Senator Clinton I will just use this past WV primary as an anaylsis.

The Pink Elephant in the room.

The now infamous AP article that Senator Clinton sighted while giving an interview to USA Today saying that hard working people, white people vote for her was probably the most divisive thing that I’ve heard through out the campaign. Now we’ve all known this since Ohio. There is a large segment of the population that is going to vote for Senator Clinton purely on the basis that she is a Clinton. Still, there are some that like the definition and experience that she gives in contrast to Senator Obama’s aloofness and message of change. And yet there is still a segment that is going to vote for her because she is white. (raises hand) And before you say it, I know that there are some blacks who are voting for Obama because he is black.

That isn’t the problem. The problem is when you come out and say it like it is something to be toted around like a badge of honor. It gives permission to those that feel that way to feel that way…or maybe better yet, she is saying it is okay to feel that way. Either way it is divisive and intentionally so.

There is also this magical goal post that for some reason everyone keeps allowing her to move. Now she keeps saying that she is staying in the race until we have a nominee. This is fair, right and just and it is the backbone of a democratic society. Voters must vote! It is the people who should decide the fate of our future. I believe this with all my heart. I believe that Hillary Clinton deserves the right to stay in this race until a nominee has been decided. But that doesn’t mean that she should stay until she finds a way that she can become the nominee.

She keeps changing the rules, at first we weren’t going to count the Michigan and Florida delegates because they held rogue elections. Everyone, including Senator Clinton agreed that this was fair. They even agreed to take their names of the ballots in Michigan, this also includes Senator Clinton. This was established by the party leaders and the candidates before the election process started. Now Senator Clinton is reneging on this agreement. Just like she reneged on taking her name off the ballot in Michigan. Now you might ask why am I bringing up something that has been known since before March. But now Florida and Michigan provides new talking points. Yup, she’s found another way to change the dynamic of the race…and the latest rule change is(drum roll please)…2210.

Since it is almost certain that Barack is going to get to 2026 delegates before Hillary does she has taken it upon herself to move the goal post. The magic number is not 2026 anymore it is now 2210 because that is how much it would have been if Florida and Michigan were included in the process.

It reminds me of when I used to play basketball when I was a teenager. There was this guy named Jerry Jones. He lived around the block from where I grew up. He had a basketball hoop up in his backyard that was quite simply the perfect place to play backyard ball.

It was all concrete with a ten foot privacy fence wrapped around it and no powerlines to abstruct the angles to the basket. So needless to say, everyone in the neighborhood would post up over there during the summer, to either wait on the next game or to watch us play ball. The only problem with playing over Jerry’s house was that when ever he lost a game he would either immediately yell “RUN IT BACK!” which means he gets a rematch or he would just up the score. If we were going to ten then it went to twelve, if we were going to twelve then it went to fifteen and he would do this until he won the game. That’s what you call house rules.

A HOSTILE TAKEOVER

For you to be the nominee it would have to be a wholesale shift in superdelegates, in effect overturning the pledge delegates and the individual state elections. Would you be comfortable with that?

Hillary Clinton:

Well I think that super delegates are there for a purpose that is to determine who they think will be the stronger candidate for president. Super delegates are not bound to vote any way. They can change their minds. They can go to the convention and change their minds.

She went on to say that pledged delegates didn’t have to follow the will of the people either. The reason I bring this up is it flies in the face of the logic of her main argument to seat Florida and Michigan delegates as they voted so that they reflect the will of the people when she is willing to disenfranche the thirty plus states, the seventeen million plus people that didn’t vote for her by having the superdelegates over throw the populus vote just so Hillary can be crowned queen for not quiting.

Victory before dawn.

The road to victory is bumpy...yes. However, each victory for Hitllary is overshadowed by the next sunrise. John Edwards morning endorsing for Senator Obama is a beautiful thing. John Edwards endorsement followed by his delegates was a climax by sundown.

President Bush's comment in Israel...let's say should be expected since we have chosen to ignore the "Politics as Usual" Washington DC stratedgy. Mr. Bush showed his "True Colors' when he not once, but twice shunned Senator Obama. I'll say "Change" is obvious when the President who is not campaigning for a new term is hating. I would like to say that it just Republican supporting another Republican...reflecting on modes of operendi...seem like a wee bit of h8n in the white house. I'm sure others(officials) have made attempts to speak if not even poised to sleep with the enemy if needed. Apparently Barack Obama appeal to the world in the realm of peace is possible. Strange when Hammas sees the hope and change before President Bush can. Maybe he needs glasses. let's just make sure they don't have a Rose tint.

Newshounds were notified, the event happened with full coverage, and because this was a major endorsement, it knocked Hillary's West Virginia "landslide" news off the edge, as one of those quarter-pushing carnival games would do!

Sometimes later, even seemingly so late as to be ineffective, is better!

Looks to me things are turning for the best and for the November general election. Obama is gaining endorsements everyday. No longer does he appear to be the underdog, but like many of us have always believe and continue to believe, he is the best candidate to run in the November general election.

It is really important for all of us to make sure those people who are not registered to vote yet, to get them out there and do so. Whereas we may have come a long way, there is still work to be done. Our young people especially need to make sure they are registered. Many states allow you to download the voter's application and mail it to your perspective counties. I have to say for myself this is the most I have ever gotten into politics and elections and I am excited.

Barack Obama for our next President...that is change we can believe in!

It's about time, Mr. Edwards...

I was at an event in Little Rock this evening and heard some folks whispering the news that John Edwards had finally endorsed somebody in the Democratic primary.

This certainly takes something off the thumping Obama took in West Virginia on Tuesday and the endorsement has obviously been in the works for some time.

I'm anxious to see if Edwards works to close the blue-collar gap between Obama and Hillary Clinton in Kentucky.

It's an interesting development but it's probably inconsequential to the final outcome.

But anything that will get this thing over by June 3 is welcomed.

As a former Edwards suppporter, I have to say that it finally happened that John spoke in Michigan to endorse our candidate, Barack Obama. I was hoping he would have endorsed earlier, but I think that the timing could not have been more perfect. His speech was great and it reemphasized the "One America" campaign he has been speaking about. Obama's speech was just as great and Barack is really showing the unity that the Democratic Party needs to have in order to defeat John McCain (aka George W. Bush's 3rd term) in November . Like John said, change isn't going to be easy to come by. We know that the special interests will do anything to stop the change that needs to be done in this country. That is why his endorsement is important to make sure that change does happen and that it won't just be a dream.
