“If they say, Come Along with us, let’s lie in wait for someone’s blood, let’s waylay some harmless soul; lets swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; throw in you lot with us, and we will share a common purse!”. (By the way, there is more to this statement than just this, but, taken out of context, perceptions can change and be manipulated for the ultimate control factor)

In the prophetic words of a man named Solomon, true values that hold through the ages, have been pushed aside throughout history. Why, you may ask, are things like this done? Perhaps it’s that special gift that God has given us, free will, the ability to make choices in our lives that lead us to life, or to destruction/death per say.

What are some of the realities of today, seemingly no respect for elders, the have and have not, the social strata that envelopes all of us, the mass consumerism that rules our lives all leading to various complexities of personality disorders. Some call these disorders Sin, others call them just a fad or phase and then again, who’s to say? Gossip and innuendo seem to be more powerful in our society and world than truth and integrity. Looking at the magazines, the news on tv and in the paper, there seems to be a proliferation not only of porn, but false statements and misconceptions pushed just to get ratings and sell advertisement. Humm very destructive things for all of us, and yet we bite into it on a daily basis.

Trust, wow, what a term! Trust implies honesty, integrity and other very wonderful heartfelt values to maintain between even two people (much less trusting yourself to make appropriate decisions). Trust in relationships is waylaid by undercurrents of accusatory statements, criticizing others without looking at your self first. In actuality, most of us, as human beings, are hypercritical of ourselves and take for granted that we have the right to judge others on our own metrics of life, instead of attempting to understand the other persons’ metrics.

Perhaps an exceptional evaluation of personal metrics and what criteria we base this on is in order. The metrics of my life are probably not the same as anyone else, but they may be close in a comparative sense. Definitions and values, even though they have the same wordings, still vary in perception of what is real and what is not, and can be twisted and used against people at will, or, the opposite of this coin could be the ability to accept and understand the other persons perception, and not take it as a criticism of your personal perceptions.

Perhaps it’s time for a personal introspection and going through that 4th step in the 12 step program, a fearless and personal moral inventory and see just what our individual metrics are, and whether they fit our perceptions of various values or not……

Health Care Rally Results

We had a good turnout at the health care rally yesterday. Had a lot of honks from people driving by. We turned in a 133 page petition for a public option. We spoke to the staff of Senator Carl Levin (MI-D) and told them how important the public option is to keep the insurance companies honest. We received a letter that he wrote to Senator Kennedy expressing his support for the public option. This is an issue "Senator Levin has been working on for decades," stated Vicki Selva, Regional Representative. We had a great time and everyone was very excited to be a part of real health reform that is so desparately needed.

Summary of June 12th Health Care meeting

I held a Neighborhood Health Care meeting on June 12th. Attendees included: Randy Virgin, DeeAnn Apgar, Mara and Marty Severin, Lex Patten, Linda Zaugg, Carly Horton, Susanne Fleek, Terry Umatum and a lot of rambuctious but well-behaved children.

Summary of issues:
1. Every person in the group had lived at some point in their life without healthcare coverage. The number one reason was cost.
2. Attendees who were self-employeed and purchased their own health care paid a high cost ($400+ per month) for plans that were essentially comprised of little mroe than catastrophic care. One attendee was forgoing a procedure to have a growth removed because it was too expensive - her deductible on her insurance was too high for it to make financial sense for her to go to the doctor.
3. Attendees were concerned to learn that in some cases, insurance coverage did not cross state lines. As a result, one couple lost medical coverage for themselves and their newborn when they moved to Alaska.
4. Even when medical assistance is available through state, federal or non-profit programs it is often hard to take advantage of due to the paperwork and a lack of knowlege that the programs are available.
5. Though the expectations of doctors for high salaries may be part of the cause of expensive health care, the group agreed that most doctors sacrifice a great deal during medical school in addition to the financial impact. There was agreement that doctors were deserving of high compensation. It was suggested that the federal goverment could assist doctors in paying off loans in exchange for free or discounted service or shortterm assignments in at-risk communities.
6. The group was concerned about the high cost of medical mal-practice insurance and indicated support of some sort of cap on awards on medical malpractice.
7. The lack of preventive medical care coverage in all but the best and most expensive insurance plans was noted as especially shortsighted. The group believe an investment in preventive care would lead to decreasing medical costs over time.
8. California was highlighted as an example where the problems of poverty and the uninsured will be compounded as the State makes deep cuts into community services. The group predicted that there would be a great increase in the number of patients ending up in the ER for care which would increase costs to hospitals, creating a catch-22 situation.
9. The group was especially concerned about the health care available to pregnant women, children and the elderly.
10. The group noted that public inebriates were a special problem in Anchorage that strained the system. Because of the lack of preventive services and programs at the state and federal level, local first responders and local governments are forced to bear most of the costs of serving this needy and demanding population -- often to the detrmiment of other citizens.

CONCLUSION/ACTION ITEMS:
Though the goal of the meeting was to develop and participate in a community-based health care project on June 27, 2009 this group seemed more interested in the policy development and political aspects of this debate. Most in the group were interested in ensuring that the House and Senate subcommittees produce a viable piece of legislation that includes a public plan component. To that end the group was interested in the following actions:
1. Track the legislation develop through House and Senate subcommittees. We're not sure how to do this and may contact Begich's office for assistance. In the same vein, the group wishes for a better understanding of what the actual policies are and what the timeline for approval will look like.
2. Ensure that both Senators from Alaska vote to support health care reform that guarentees choice, reduces costs and provides affordable healthcare options to all Americans. A letter-writing, emailing campaign is probably in order.
3. Ensure that communications with our Senators includes an emphasis on prevention, using the public inebriate impact on Anchorage as a prime example.

As a result, the group will develop a letter-writing campaign and will begin outreach on that process the week of June 21. More information on this will follow.

North Korea following the nuclear test and missile launches on the east coast air defense declared closed to shipping in the coming days, one of the regions of the Yellow Sea.

"North Korea has announced a ban on shipping near the district of the province of South Pyongan Chynsan-Namdo on the west coast, presumably because on Tuesday or Wednesday it will launch a short-range missiles," - Renhap agency quoted South Korean government source in South Korea.

It is estimated that out Renhap, flight range of these missiles with conventional named KN-01 is 160 kilometers.

Remember, May 25, North Korea "as a measure for a comprehensive strengthening of the nuclear deterrent force" conducted a successful nuclear test. According to the Ministry of Defense RF power tested a nuclear device was 10 to 20 kilotons.

In addition, North Korea launched three short-range rockets from Cape Musudan and around the town of Wonsan. South Korean experts viewed these actions as a demonstration of force.

In response, the UN Security Council at an emergency meeting strongly condemned the nuclear test North Korea and demanded that Pyongyang comply with Security Council resolution calling for halt activities in the nuclear field.

Media: The Somali pirates have decided to abandon piracy

About 200 pirates in the north of Somalia have agreed to throw a pirate craft, and the release of the captured hostages.

As a committee, meet the pirates with local community leaders and people from Somalia took place in the autonomous region of Puntland. The representative of the pirates Abshir Abdullah told the BBC that all the ships and hostages, whom they held, will now be released.

Polish publisher, whom the press called Marek S., sentenced to three months jail on probation for two years for the publication of excerpts from the book of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf.

Greek police detained some 40 immigrants involved in the riots
Today, 22 May, in Athens, was arrested about 40 immigrants who have taken part in demonstrations, which later degenerated into riots.

According to police, protesters threw bottles at police around the water, and damaged 17 cars and two shop windows.

As reported, on the eve of about fifteen hundred immigrants, mostly Muslims, were protesting near the Greek Parliament to destroy copies of the Koran to Greek police.

The immigrant, owns a café in the center of Athens, claimed that during the inspection of police tore the holy book of Muslims, and became a tramp of feet. The police announced that it is investigating these allegations, but that did not stop the crowd, which tried to break through the cordon around parliament.

Appropriating and Recontextualizing Google Image Search Results

Every art student learns about the fair use principle, granting us permission to use any image in our artwork as long as we transform it so that it conveys new meaning. But beyond that all-encompassing definition, we don’t know what transgressions, if any, we are actually committing.

Recently in the news is the preemptive lawsuit artist Shepard Fairey filed against the Associated Press. According to Fairey the AP threatened to sue him unless he pays royalties for the image that he used as source material for his now famous campaign poster of Barack Obama. Fairey argues that he is protected by the fair use principle. He claims that his intention was not to reproduce any particular image, but instead was to capture a specific gaze representative of the ideas of hope and change.

In an interview on NPR, Fairey declared he was going forward with this suit on behalf of all artists, the thousands of artists that created their own campaign images in the same grassroots manner, pulling images from the web in support of the message of hope, change and a new administration in Washington.

I am fascinated by Fairey’s implication that the process of appropriating and re-contextualizing Google image search results might be considered a grassroots action. As an artist, I frequently use images that that I find on Google. Like Fairey suggested, my motivation for using these images is to highlight the search itself, not the derivative image.

Perhaps then, these cyber Robin Hoodian actions—using and transforming Google image search results—are capable of changing the structures that control the dissemination of information. After all, the order that information appears in Google searches is determined by the amount of people searching any given topic. And as a result of the Fairey’s appropriation, his campaign poster may be forever linked to Obama’s presidency.

Beware of Big Business Backlash

Closing tax loopholes, scaling back on tax breaks and liberal write-offs, and generally expecting big business to contribute to this nation's economic recovery by sharing more of their profits with the American people rather than top management all fall under the heading of "the right thing to do."

However, I sincerely hope the Obama Team has a plan for fighting back when big business instead raises consumer costs to make up for the "losses' these business will incur as a result of these policy changes. We all know that instead of sharing in the pain they will continue to find ways to covertly line their proverbial pockets while publicly proclaiming, "See, the president's economic policies are not working. Just so we get those out of the way.

To answer the question: The structure, style, leadership, groups, all of it is volunteer created and volunteer led. I emailed OFA and received a response that CAN is a volunteer created grassroots organization.

Here is what I like about the CAN groups:
- National network of volunteers that are active now, or at least will read their email and join an online group because a stranger asked them to
- State network of the same
- Updates of facts, action items, once a day under the "daily digest" option.

Here is what I dont like about the CAN groups:
- Aggressive against those elected officials who disagree. We received instructions during the Campaign by Obama himself to treat the other side (hillary at the time) with respect. See my MyBO blog for excerpts of his speech (under mybo username J. Lowe).
- Admins are not clearly labeled a "Volunteer" - plus one of Lisa's titles are just like the DNC's official voteforchange.com campaign used during the general election
- Establishes a top-down hieararchy, and the campaign was a flat organizational style.

More on the last point - I was told by Matthew Barzun that the organization is flat, and received a diagram from him too. It is a circle of volunteers surrounding the staff at the center. There is no hierarchy - we are all equals. Also, Camp Obama taught that there are only two types of volunteers: those who make phone calls and knock on doors, and those who teach and encourage others to make phone calls and knock on doors.

The organizer is not higher than the volunteer, it is just a role to complete the group assignment: to talk and listen to voters, and to bring that information back to HQ.

What is the action to take on the CAN group? I can only tell you what I am doing: listening. I am not sold on this group right now, and am watching the communication style to learn how to be a better organizer for our local groups. My meditation on this group is to remember our call to Respect, Empower, and Include.

As far as my volunteer action from here? Do what I have always done: Whatever the OFA website tells me to do, just like Forrest Gump in boot camp. And in the meantime mayb make something up that sounds like something they would like me to do.

If I were to bet $20 on what the next OFA action is, it would be this: SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND

This was done during the first 6 months of the campaign and is what won Iowa. There was a link on the mybo website to submit ideas about important issues, and the field staff were trained in effective listening and knocked doors for months. All of the info was sent to HQ. Groups of intelligent minds were linked online who received our info, and researched and discussed it, and used it to create the Blueprint for Change and craft the course we are following right now. So it is most logical that there will be another round of what worked. So, good money is on house meetings led by you and me and everybody's cousin, using the question sheets they give us.

Back to action (most important). I was thinking to host a health care meeting - I missed the opportunity during the holidays - and now since Daschle is out, staff would have time to incorporate our information into the health care design. Probably they may do another call under new leadership, i dunno.

Or possibly i might host another USAservice.org volunteer project - doing something good for others. Then I'll feel like daisies and sunshine and the world will feel like the fabric softener commercial featuring a teddy bear.

Either way, life is good.

Metric and the Stimulus Package

I haven't had a chance to call them yet, but here's the letter I sent to Barack Obama, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, Anna Eshoo, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Elaine Alquist and Paul Fong.

The economic disaster brings us fresh opportunity to think about the things that aren't working and make fixing those things part of our economic stimulus. A great example of this is our broken customary measurement system needs to be done away with in favor of metric.
Currently, we use a confusing and out dated system of measurements rather than the easy system the rest of the world uses. This is one of the factors that makes our economy less efficient than that of other countries and makes our exports less desirable (no one outside the USA wants to know about our customary measurement system).
The confusing nature of this system leads to substantial losses such as the $360M Mars orbiter and the $25,000 congress wasted last year because of a conversion error when buying carbon credits.
It also leads to errors in medicine (children ending up in E.R. because of conversion errors and errors involved with parents using teaspoons out of the drawer rather than a measuring spoon if given a prescription in teaspoons instead of milliliters) and extremely valuable time wasted in our classrooms as we have to teach our children a difficult set of units and then even more difficult calculations using those units (as they involve conversion from metric) rather than the much more straight forward metric version.
Our children come out of school unprepared for the global economy because they're unable to effectively use the global language of measurement.
It's time to fix this mess. Please require that new infrastructure built with the stimulus package is exclusively built using metric measures and that conversion to metric is one of the goals of the stimulus.

Getting Obama Elected

We all helped Obama in our own way: some phone-banked; others knocked on doors. Because of my busy schedule, I couldn't do any of that.

So I decided to become a voluntee internet strategist for Obama's campaign. I launched my own "50 State Strategy" - essentially a massive e-mail campaign, where I micro-targeted voters. I sent out over 100,000 e-mails on his behalf the past 9 months to people from the 50 states.

It was a great deal of fun. I spent two hours a day mining the internet for e-mails specific to region, race, ethnicity, etc. And this worked beautifully. For example, when Obama was endorsed by the Asian-American PAC (the 80-20 Initiative) I sent an e-mail out that same day to over 500 members of Asian-American fraternities and sororities. And when Obama had a surprisingly rocky start with a Latina member of Congress in June (the start of the general election), I went into overdrive, e-mailing over 2000 Latinos across the country for a whole week straight about his commitment to concerns Latinos hold dear.

Moreover, when I e-mailed states like MT, ND, WY, ID, WV, and NE, I played up his eye-popping appeal among white voters. However, when I e-mailed NM, CO, OR, CA, FL or WA (more cosmopolitan, and racially/ethnically diverse states) I simply showed how he was winning and what his positions were.

So in four years when we're all working to get Obama re-elected, let's not forget about the internet. Its powerful. And it was largely responsible for him getting elected.

And when he announces his bid to run for re-election, I'm determined to have 600,000 e-mails I can send his info to. I'm growing my list, which currently is over 200,000...we have to keep the momentum going!

North Jersey Grassroots - update

I've been preoccupied since the holidays with starting a new contract job in Baltimore as well as of course the Inauguration of President Obama.      I wanted to take this opportunity to once again thank everyone who worked so hard to achieve his election. I'm slowly returning to my new love (politics), so you will be hearing a little more from me in the coming days and weeks.

The North Jersey Grassroots ("NJG") group continues to organize and make good progress at becoming a permanent progressive movement in Bergen County.   This is the official new name of Bergen County for Barack Obama. MyBO is being updated, we've reserved an Internet domain name, and I am continuing in my leadership and advisory roles for the time being.    If you have an interest in becoming involved (leader or participant), please contact me off-list.

-> In particular, I need legal advice regarding the bylaws ASAP.    Also, a financial person.

We discovered recently that we'd scheduled the next meeting of NJG on Super Bowl Sunday. That, of course, won't work for football people, so I wanted to briefly touch base and let you know our updated plans.

Why is the Urban Progressive Foundation so Passionate About Helping Seniors re: Transition to Digital Television ?

Six months ago, it became clear that there was a Digital Disaster on the Horizon with the Transition to Digital Television Impact on Seniors, Minorities, Disable and Rural. Millions could be left in the dark Feb. 17 2009 is action to connect their boxes does not happen now.

With no funding, but a passion to be part of the solution, my non-profit The Urban Progressive Foundation (a 501(c) 3 project of CDP) began a journey going to various senior buildings, underserved organizations and individuals to help them obtain their $40 coupons and then come back to connect the digital converter boxes free of charge. I saw it as a moral responsibility to get involved.

Even though DTV awareness is critical before citizens can make an informed and deliberate move to become "digital". The fact that having to do something "techie" makes people "freeze".

For 11 years our non-profit has Engaged, Excited and Empowered urbanites and underserved individuals in technology. Technology should not control you; You are empowered to control technology. So when it was clear that the DTV technology applications and trouble-shooting processes would cause great despair to those without a voice. How could we not get involved?

I contacted a company called WINEGARD, who carries the digital converter boxes. Spoke with the National Sales Manager, Grant Whipple, persisted and was successful in having Winegard to lower the price of their digital converter boxes for the underserved constituents we were serving. So with the $40 government coupon, they would only have to pay $8 (includes tax, bulk shipping and everything).

Now we are into December 08, Time is not on our side. As a friend of mine stated “Technology without compassion is another form of oppressing those without a voice." I will continue to do the best I can - but of the 35 million Americans impacted by the DTV transition a disproportionate number are the elderly, disable, rural and minorities. I just wish I could do more.

We’re six weeks out, and it feels like Inauguration Day is right around the corner. One thing’s for sure: our efforts are really starting to pay off. Let me give you a couple of examples.

Yesterday in New York City the Pickens Plan got another big endorsement. This time it was from the American Lung Association. Think about that. Here we’ve been talking about how developing renewable energies and using cleaner burning natural gas is good for our economy and creates jobs. Come to find out the Pickens Plan is good for your health! I love it. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was also on hand. He’s been a real leader in using renewables and compressed natural gas in his city. I’m glad to have him on our team.

I also want to bring up my visit to Washington last week where I met with the Obama Transition Team. Like everyone else, I’ve been impressed with the way the President-elect has been preparing for his new administration. My father used to tell me, “A fool with a plan can outsmart a genius with no plan any day of the week.” Let me tell you: the Obama team is smart, and they have a plan. The President-elect wants to get us off Middle Eastern oil in 10 years. There’s only one way he can do that, which is why I’m confident that the Pickens Plan will play an important part in the stimulus package he and his team are crafting right now.

I know President-elect Obama is ready to make some big changes. Let’s make sure Congress is too. The Army is 1.37 million strong. Now we need to get ready in every Congressional district, and I need your help.

I get tired of hearing myself bitch and moan, but...

I am one of the most non-religious people I know, but I have a family that isn't and they engage in the little yearly affair Christians like to put on called CHRISTMAS. This means family flying in to visit, spending time with family, cooking meals, decorating your elderly parents' house for Christmas the way they like it (and can no longer do themselves), and a general increase in activity in one's personal life.

Even before the election took place and we knew the joyous outcome, I felt strongly about capitalizing on the grassroots movement we've all created. I want nothing more than to continue to be the change, but does it have to be right now? Can't we wait until after the holidays are over?

I want to participate in community meetings but now is just not a good time, and it probably isn't for a lot of people. Will we have similar community organizing meetings after the first of the year? Will people who jump back in at that point be disregarded or left out?

THE REAL JOB BEGINS FOR ALL AMERICANS!

The countdown to 'CHANGE' is upon us. But our President-Elect Obama has not disappointed us. Likewise, with Vice President-Elect Joe Biden. And now we have Hillary on board, along with many other political experts.

Now is the time to 'ramp-up' and organize not only continued grass-root efforts, but even moreso ramp up your schedule to include some time to stay in direct contact with ALL your Local Politicians asking that they fully support the new legislation of the Obama/Biden administration. THIS WILL BE A CRUCIAL FACTOR! No joke!

The tasks set forth before the Obama/Biden administration is enormous in its intensity, moreso than the number of issues involved. This I'm sure we are all well aware of. But I must stress everyone to remember a few things: "It takes a village to raise a child" (translated: It takes all of us to renew a nation") and "Life is like a box of choc-o-lates, you never know...".

Therefore, it is imperative that we all strive to continue to put forth our best efforts to aide in whatever capacity possible to support the Obama/Biden administration.

Oh,yeah, please try not to besiege the Whitehouse with a flood of resumes, okay! There's plenty of other avenues that could utilize your skills and political support right here in your own backyard. If you put a little more creative thought to it, you can truly, actually, really, honestly establish it as a small business.

So I urge you to do some focused, creative thinking on that vs. sending all those resumes to the Obama/Biden administration.

There is much to be done, as well as numerous ways to get it done!

GET BUSY! FIND A WAY! GO AHEAD! GIVE IT JUST A LIL MORE THOUGHT!

Something BIG is Happening in Racine, WI

A new group in Racine, WI is attracting international attention. After the first week in existence, Yes We Can Racine has already been featured on National Public Radio and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Yes We Can Racine is an organization and an online community for action, information and conversation. We are taking the organizing principles of the Campaign for Change and applying them to local issues. At Yes We Can Racine we take action in four ways:

Work on local issues that impact Racine County
Train volunteers in the organizing techniques we used to elect President Obama
Elect state and local candidates who share the same vision for our country
Help President Obama pass legislation through grassroots efforts

I'm glad Allison Fine is critiquing Change.gov, (on techpresident) and I think she makes some good points. I know that some activists are frustrated that the Obama team hasn't shown the ground game leadership that was the power behind the campaign. I think it's way too early to criticize Team Obama, but not way too early to be floating and discussing ideas.

But here's my meta take on one of the most vocalized complaints I've been hearing: post-election Team Obama (they're not even in the White House yet, he hasn't even been inaugurated yet) has not built the 2-way bridge to everywhere and everyone is stranded on the shores of post-election chaos and confusion.

I don't see this and I think it's a myth being created for good press and/or to push one's own agenda. Activists & organizations exist by the hundreds, maybe the thousands, and they aren't waiting around for instructions from Change.gov. They're doing what activists do. I'm one of them. I'm very busy right now getting back to my regular feminist agenda after having put it on hold for 9 months while I was All Obama All the time. As a result of having joined the Obama community, I am more skilled, more connected, and more activist.

In my opinion, it will take some time before the Obama administration figures out how to build bridges with its grassroots base, but, folks, this is and will continue to be a bottom-up movement, and so should it always be. We, the people, must agitate for what we need, and we, the people, will continue to build our visibility, our agendas, and our collective voice. And we will then invite the O-administration to visit our table...or our tables.

Do I hope that the O-administration will get the bridge thing right? I certainly do, but I'm not holding my breath. We're in an economic crisis. We're involved in two wars. Terrorists sent the world a new message yesterday in India. The unemployment rolls are swelling...in my view, Obama and team will be on ER duty for quite a while. In the meantime, my fellow feminists and I continue to expand the base, to network wildly, to get our agenda seen as a universally applicable set of needs as opposed to being marginalized as "women's issues."

The feminist movement never ended even though the mainstream press reported otherwise. We are not post-feminism. We are not post-patriarchy. There are staunch and stalwart feminists still at work, there are younger feminists emerging as leaders, and there are even younger feminists who are energizing the movement.

We're here, we've been here all along, and we're not waiting for the phone to ring.

All,

Where do we go from here? The campaign was a battle of epic
proportions. As in war and most battles, the heroics of the
battlefield will remain unsung. Where do the spoils of war rest?
There will be no medals given out; that's the bottom line. President-Elect Obama called upon us to join him to bring the change we need.
Though all our stories are unique to ourselves, we answered that
call. With fierce determination, strength and political will that
the world has never seen before, we turned 'Yes We Can' into 'Yes We
Did.' There are no words to describe what victory means in the
context of history, to the people of the world or to oneself. The
victory is either upon us or now rests soundly behind us depending on
what we do from this point forward.

So where do we go from here? I say this: There will be no more lofty speeches to feed our hunger for change. Change has come to the White House and the United
States. Our President must be the President of all our citizens.
Today and for the unforeseeable future, the challenges are great but
not insurmountable. The battle of Obama for America and the Campaign
for Change was won and a celebration is due. However, the problems
we face as a nation are far greater than our victory. The time to
exult must be short because victory was merely a step in the right
direction.

Though the challenges we face are immense and the battlefield appears to be in Washington D.C., it is not. The battle rages on in large and small cities across this country, places that
only we have been with people that were once strangers to us who
still remain unemployed, uninsured and underpaid. We still live in a
crumbling infrastructure where jobs are being shipped overseas and
where the schools for our children are under-funded, etcetera. These
problems still remain and will continue to do so. Though these
challenges were not created by us, it is us that know how to bring
the change they seek to them.

President-elect Obama called upon this nation two years ago and asked us all as a people to help him with these challenges. These problems will not go away overnight. The president cannot swipe his pen and end poverty and inequality. We as
a trained "army" are the ones who know how to build and harness
change at the grassroots level and help it rise to the top. The
brotherhood, sisterhood and the renewed value of citizenship are
alive again in America. It brings with it something new, individuals
of all generations, all economic levels and all backgrounds. It took
the whole history of the United States for this to come about and it
cannot wilt. The community we built and the strength that has come
with it has just begun. Our time is now to act on what appears
natural for us to do: bring change to our communities, which will
bring change from the bottom-up to our President's desk. We carry
the mantra of change now because we were and are that change. That
symbol of hope, which is the new great symbol for America, is ready
for its next steps. I believe that it is on us to pick up that
battle flag and continue to inspire and motivate the millions of
people who helped us all get to this historic moment in history.

What are the spoils of this war? First and foremost, we now hold
inside us the greatest political victory in our nation's history.
For all people that took part, from volunteering, first time
activists and to all the staff, we will not fully understand the
weight and gravity of our achievement for some time to come. It goes
far beyond anything we have ever done in our life.

Now is not the time to stop. We are at the beginning of our journey. We have still yet to make the ultimate sacrifice. We worked tirelessly, but that
was just to get us to the starting line. No sacrifice was too
small. Each and every individual played a critical role, which
contributed to our success. I truly believe the grassroots
organizations combined with an unstoppable field operation are the
faces connected to the people who got it done. Washington is not
where that happens. It's now rooted in Des Moines, Iowa and all the
places in the country where we made a difference and where the
campaign foothold was grounded deep in the trenches.

If we let the front lines go and do not build them strong and reinforce them, our
President's job will be tougher than what it is today. 2010 and 2012
will be here before you know it and we must be prepared. The
President's mandate is the front line, and it must be held. We
cannot fade into the distance and watch as things unfold. In some
way we must be there to stand with them so we are building from this
point forward and not rebuilding afterwards, which may be too late.
The most precious thing we have is our grassroots and the communities
we organized. We must keep them motivated and empowered to take
action in their own towns and to keep supporting our President as he
wades the difficult time ahead that he and the American people face.

We all started this for our own reasons. For me it was my belief in
Barack Obama and the belief that if he were president, my brother
Sgt. Daniel James Hunter, U.S. Army, would finish his third tour
safely and return to a new President and Commander-in-Chief. These
are my spoils of war. Yet, the war still rages on at home and
abroad, and our task has just begun.

What I'm thankful for today on this Thanksgiving Day is that tonight
my brother will arrive again on U.S. soil. Let us all hope that this
will be his last tour.

I am also grateful for every individual who sacrificed and who
believed that what we were doing was the right thing to do and that
if we worked hard enough we would bring change to the United States
of America. We did and for that I am thankful for each and every one
of you.

We are all the ones we were waiting for and we shocked the world.
Let's see this through. We must water the roots and they will grow.

Grassroots Inaugural Ball 2009 -- We're getting there, Yes we are!

Hello MYBO people!

It's time for another update on the Grassroots Inaugural Ball 2009! Some of you would say past-due...

A number of people have been working very hard, and there is some big news to announce to you.

Where's it going to be? When's it going to be?

The date and location of the ball have been decided!

Our very first Grassroots Inaugural Ball 2009 will be on January 19, the night before the inauguration, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center on Pennsylvania Avenue. That's right on the Inaugural Parade route, between the Capital and the White House. The plan is that after the Ball ends, people will be able to go right out in large groups and stake out space on the parade route, or over on the National Mall where there will be giant TVs -- a night vigil, awaiting the Inauguration. This is not only symbolic, but also practical, since 4 million people are expected to descend on Washington Tuesday morning to see the Inauguration. We'll have a head start. The space can accommodate around 2000 people, and we expect to sell out quickly.

(By the way, Monday night is a traditional inaugural ball night--we'll be one of many such events, and we're hoping we can get the President-elect and Mrs. Obama to drop by and greet the folks who worked so hard throughout the last 18 months.)

Sponsors and Underwriters

The only thing holding us back is making the deposit on the Reagan Building. We are still hoping for those among you who feel that you can to step forward and help sponsor the event. Your sponsorship assures us and everyone attending the ball of two things:

First, that we can make the $52,000 deposit on the Reagan Building. We are getting close, thanks to those who have stepped up to sponsor and underwrite the event (and we will get the list of underwriters and sponsors onto the website), but we need more of you to get us all the way there. To date, we have some $45,000 in pledged monies. Not bad! It's starting to come in too, now that... wait, that's for later.
Second, lower ticket prices. Every penny (those still exist, right?) of sponsor and underwriting money will go to one ultimate goal: bring the ticket prices for the event as low as we can.

Just to be 100% clear: a couple people have asked if non-sponsors will be able to purchase tickets, and the answer is yes! The whole point of sponsorship and underwriting is to make sure that a certain number of tickets will be able to be offered at a lower price in general sale.

What does your sponsorship get you again?

At the $2,000 level: 4 free tickets to the event, publicity space in our program and on the website, and a very special sponsor gift.

At the $1,000 level: 2 free tickets (Surprise! The holidays have come early! Yes, the is retroactive to those of you who have already sponsored. That was fun!), publicity space in our program and on the website, and a very special sponsor gift.

At the $500 level: 1 free ticket to the event (Yes, you, too!), publicity space in our program and on the website, and a very special sponsor gift.

Below $500 level: Pre-sale ticket access, mention in our program and on the website, and a sponsor gift.

Disclaimer: Your donation is not tax-deductible. We apologize, but it takes the IRS up to a year to review new non-profit applications, and they can always refuse you. Since we don't have the luxury of that kind of time, we've had to just proceed with non-profit status.

We'd also to thank Corinne Carson for spear-heading the "high-roller Obama donor" research project. Corinne and a group of MYBO volunteers have taken on the job of using public information on the largest Obama campaign donors to help us identify additional individuals to contact to solicit sponsorship help for our event. Our very own first Grassroots Inaugural Ball 2009 wants to build the base of its ball entertainment on you. Our base was solid enough to get Obama elected, so... please reply to this email with samples of you performing (video, music file, etc.).

The Reagan Building space allows as a range of different venues, from the 600-seat amphitheater for larger performance and multi-media and image/video presentation -- like Meredith Wheeler's Bridge Project, and we are looking for additional submissions to run during the night -- to a dance floor with raised stage, the monumental amphitheater foyer, and several more intimate spaces for quieter cabaret-style performance and conversation.

We're getting started now reviewing submissions -- no promises made -- but we will listen/watch and get back to you as soon as we can.

We'll also be looking into some local artists and possibly some big names (don't get your hopes up too high now) for your enjoyment.

. . . Here's My Concern . . .

It may seem like a small thing, well a couple of things. You mentioned using your gut feelings. President Bush said something similar. That bothers me because I know that few people know Cognitive Therapy. That says that all feeling have a thought behind them. We have to bring the thought into mind and test it to see if it's true. Feelings have a thought or thoughts behind them and they can be true or false. Everything, then is subject to logic. If we have a gut reaction, it's often true. It shouldn't be dismissed easily at all, but you have to ask yourself, what does it mean. Why do I feel that way and since they are so important, even after understanding them it's good to keep looking for more information. The free world is hanging on those decisions. Scripture might say to test them to see if they are from God, that is to say, workable, reasonable, true and fit with everything else you know and believe. Sometimes it takes a lot of asking yourself questions, not making judgments, just asking for explanations. Those rules are consistent scripturally and scientifically, from the results of extensive study and confirmation. That's my first concern. If you need help, be humble, ask.

Secondly, the thought you expressed of working 16 hours a day, or some such. No way. If you follow the rules of how to think, ask if you don't know. Bush deligated, but didn't follow up on what they where doing. The government needs an administrator or many such, but it needs an inspired person overseeing. A good adminstrator is worth their weight in gold, but they still come a dime a dozen. Not many people are as inspired as your going to need to be. None were quit good enough except one. You also need to be listening to solutions from the people, 100 million strong. You have incredible geniuses out here. Why do all the work yourself? And intuition. Let the brain do the work and access it with intuition, better than a gut reaction. The rule is the same test it rigorously also, but only after you find out what sense it's trying to make and why the intuition came. It has a reason to be, so take it seriously. Test it yourself and listen to Einstein when he said, the only real thing is intuition, the only valuable thing is intuition. I believe that that saying is more important than his other theories, which he said he intuited also. Oprah said she followed her intuition. You can hardly find anyone famous who didn't. That's inspiration. Do that and you can get home to your family sometime and set a good example for all of us. You can do some work at home, but keep humble like me.

I agree that the Obama grassroots network should be kept separate from the DNC.

It truly is a "mass movement with unprecedented potential to influence voters." "If it's in the party," said Marshall Ganz, a Harvard University lecturer who helped design the training curriculum for Obama's organizers, "that's a way to kill it."

"Barack got elected with a significant number of independent voters and a fair number of Republicans. And the agenda that he ran on is not just a Democratic agenda, it's a broad agenda," Hildebrand said. "If all of the communication comes from the DNC, it may not engage as many people as we're going to need to engage at the grass-roots level."

Hildebrand offered another argument for an independent network: It could be used to challenge Democratic lawmakers if they didn't hew to the Obama agenda. The organization, he said, could "pressure anybody who we would need to build a coalition of votes in the House and Senate."

OK mates; the world has seen the largest organized effort of the American people successfully launch an initiative to transform our nation. There is now a debate on the course of our ship of state and we have a choice whether we are going to help steer.

From my biased perspective, I summarize our choice as follows:

Either we fold the power and organized structure of the Obama campaign into a DNC effort intended to defeat Republicans ... or we maintain the grassroots organization as a bipartisan force with the intent of unifying America and finding solutions of common purpose.

Our Grassroots Inauguration Ball 2009 -- Update

Dear MYBO volunteers,

This is to let you know that a core organizing committee has formed and has been working round the clock since Friday to get our Grassroots Ball 2009 off the ground .

We have chosen a URL for the event, the website is being developed and will be ready to go soon, we are negotiating with venues and are working to solicit sponsors and underwriters to help keep the ticket price as low as we can make it.

This last is an urgent need, and anyone interested in sponsoring, purchasing advertising in the program, underwriting, or investing to help us raise the down payment on the venue should get in touch with one of us right away.

We need to rasie $40,000 before the end of next week to secure our venue big enough for a couple of thousand Obama-supporter volunteers to celebrate the fruits of our hard work, and, for many, finally meet face to face. That may sond like a lot, but remember, it was all our little donations that put Barack over the top!

If you are a fundraiser or have experience as a volunteer doing fundraising for a charitable organization, have the time right now and want to take this on, please let us hear from you! We can help put together a team to assist you.

We have been approached by a promoter who wants to take the event on with total control and financial backing, but our concern was that the event be divested of it "grassroots" significance. Like we have said throughout the campaign, we can do it, Yes.We.Can!

Reponse for this event has been staggering. Our goal is to accommodate as many wishing to attend as possible, but we can see that demand will outstrip the capacity of any facility we can find. There are as many wishing to come as worked so hard throughout the year, and we have replies from all over the country.

A group is organizing satellite The People's Balls throughout the United States. They seem to be organizing from Maryland for Obama on MYBO, for anyone interested in checking that out and organizing something in your area. We will try to get an AV set-up to watch simutanous events in DC and elsewhere from our own, and broadcast ours on live streaming video.

Anyone who has specific skills to volunteer -- particularly people in the DC area -- who can be "on the ground" and has the time, grit and flexibilty to jump on this, please be in touch. We need to move very, very quickly to make this happen. Make it clear in your subject line that you are offering help and with what.

Once the website is up, we will put the word out so you can check it for information and the announce date for ticket sales. We can no longer accept any requests for reservations by email.

Do You Have to Be Well-Connected to Participate in Inaugural Events

With the Senators and Congressmen taking requests from friends and family, many of Obama volunteers and supporters may be left in the cold. So, why not take the lemons and make lemonade? One group here is suggesting to host our own parties. I agree and want to take it one step further (thanks Anthony). I hope the Obama team will use their clout to talk to stadium owners to let supporters watch the inauguration throughout the DC area and the country. That way, we can tailgate; have free concerts; and do not have to spend a lot of money for dress-up clothes.

What are your thoughts?

What to do w/ My.BarackObama.com now?

Team Obama is now deciding what to do with My.BarackObama.com. I urge the team to continue growing and developing the site, and to use it to support and advocate Obama's initiatives with Congress and America.

Though Congress is Democratically controlled, I can almost guarantee there will be disagreements b/t Obama and the House or Senate on some things. Frankly, I trust Obama's erudition, due dilligence, open mindedness, integrity, and judgement much more than that of Congress. When disagreements arise and push comes to shove, I am pretty sure I'll want Obama to win them.

Directed support and advocacy from his 10 million strong My.BarackObama.com users will in many cases be enough to swing Congress Obama's way. One extremely useful addition to the site would be automatic email/fax capability, where users can upload documents to fax to a list of Congressional office fax numbers, or send emails to congressional office email addresses. I've been using Metrofax.com for this regarding financial crisis issues. It works ok, but is limited to sending 50 faxes at a time, and it's contact list entry and import features are rudimentary at best.

In a nutshell, My.BarackObama.com team should focus on providing the tools Obama's supporters need to effectively, efficiently advocate Congress in support of his initiatives.
