OFA – RI celebrates Nov. 4 Anniversary with Renewed Commitment to Change

Organizing for America of Rhode Island celebrated the one-year anniversary of Election Day 2008 with a gathering at CAV Restaurant in Providence that encapsulated the dual emotions of the day: pride over the progress our nation has made by electing President Obama and a renewed commitment to fighting for the change we voted for!

In attendance were former Rhode Island volunteers, campaign staff, grassroots organizers and current Organizing for America volunteers. We heard from campaign super-volunteer, Greg Greco on his experiences as a volunteer:

“Being part of a historic moment in our country’s history one year ago was truly a highlight in my life. But as President Obama has said himself, that’s where our work starts, not ends…but President Obama cannot do it alone - no one can! He and our country are only as strong as those of us that believe in making our country great.”

As a surprise addition, Congressman Jim Langevin and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse called in to the party to wish the crowd well and give a behind-the-scenes update on the progress in Washington. Both Members of the House were energized by the continued enthusiasm of Rhode Island Obama supporters and stressed the importance of staying fired up!

“This day last year was not the end of our fight for change,” said Congressman Langvein, “it was our beginning!” Senator Whitehouse added, “The mood in Washington is intense – we are closer than ever to passing real reform and rely on the grassroots to help make it happen!”

All attendees agreed, whether you volunteered during the campaign or not, and whether you’ve already participated in the fight for health insurance reform or not, NOW is the time to get FIRED UP and READY TO GO all over again!

Don't Just Sit There -- DO SOMETHING!

I've been in a financial hardship for the past several months due to a major job loss. In this time, I have consistently put in resumes, conducted follow-up calls, and made in-person visits hoping to land a stable position. Unfortunately, the economy is not cooperating with me; nor are prospective employers, who can't afford to take on more workers. So here I am...I'm hanging on by a thread but I still believe that our President, for whom I voted, is still going to turn this country around in a positive way.

That's why it's so critical that even if you're not in the best financial shape, healthy constitution, or otherwise, we must ALL do our part by participating in EVENTS that make a statement and create a buzz to generate REAL support for the issues in which we believe. My primary goal is to get a universal health care program installed in our governmental system -- if all else fails, I'll opt for the public option -- meanwhile, some politicians and media talking heads are trying to say that it can't be done.

They're trying to say that we "can't" have it.

They're trying to say that they don't care about us.

They're trying to say that we don't matter.

Well, we DO MATTER. And God willing, if we put our hearts, minds, and spirits together, we CAN get this thing off the ground. Sittting at home yelling at the news channel is not going to accomplish anything. Sitting at our desks, keying rants and raves about how we feel is not going to get it done.

The ONLY WAY we CAN GET REAL HEALTH CARE REFORM is if we PUT OUR THOUGHTS and WORDS to ACTION. Participate in events, organize events, help orchestrate a candlelight vigil, a rally, a sit-in, a march...DO WHATEVER IT TAKES to MAKE THEM LISTEN.

We will not go gently into the night. We will not fade into the sunset...TODAY IS OUR TIME. WE ARE THE ONES WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!! LET'S GET GOING!!!

We had a tent set up, and I played guitar, and asked people politely if they would lend their name to the work we have to do. It was a beautiful day in America to be spreading progressive values! We got hundreds of signatures.

It is gonna be ALL ABOUT shameless SELF PROMOTION! I tell you this so that you may (if you want!) to deal yourself out, were we playin' "Five card Texas Hold 'em"! But we're not, so I hope you'll play along!

As many of you already know, I have an "EVENT" for which you can sign up (and I hope many more of you do; it is VERY EASY to do so; see "events" to the right? A quick search SHOULD yield a result that lists my shameless pluggery!

I am currently LIVING as opposed to the miscontsrued perception of what Hospices are really all about!

They are NOT a place where people "go to die. They are a place where one goes to live, thrive, and in my case, create some of the finest "Artwork" I've ever put out!!

125 Pledges - what worked for us! Pledge Project 3-21-09

Worked: a regional director of the Campaign salted our little Event with a 'ringer', i.e., a really skilled veteran canvasser, and the synergy raised our game plus he was by far the source of the largest chunk of Pledges. Worked: rather than walking a neighborhood, we set-up a table in front of an upscale health food market (with prior approval from store mgr) in a progressive area, which brought the Pledgers to us, and provided buzz for later in the day ("Did you see that Obama table over at Whole Foods?"). We began the Event early (11am) and by far the greatest traffic was between 11am-1:30pm (we stayed till 3pm).

Worked: I contributed the cost of 200 color reproductions of the original Pledge form, which 1) made the Event look official, 2) the 'brand' elicited a positive emotional response, & 3) it made each potential signer feel special. Included in my Feedback to OFA is a proposed mechanism whereby supporters can contribute bulk-print materials to local Events. In the meantime, see if a supporter who can't physically attend the Event might instead perhaps choose to contribute in this way.

Worked: I contributed the cost of a printing shop to create 6x9 color cards of Fairey's red/blue/cream portrait off Google Image, this version with PROGRESS at the foot, selecting the thickest laminate material which doubled the cost, but this way a true Collectable was created, which could be stood-up rather than filed away and boxed. We called them an Office Toy, to stand up on one's desk/bookshelf. My cost was $250 for merely QTY 35, but one of my Event signs said: 'First 35 Pledges get one of these!' and they were extremely popular and motivating. I will try to do the same at future Events because word/envy will spread in the community, creating motivation for new people to attend upcoming Obama Events. If you like the idea, see if you know someone who might want to contribute a give-away like this to your event.

Worked: We taped to a pole near our Event table my standing cardboard life-sized Obama. I had a paper taped above him: "Good Day! Do you support me?" and another light-hearted sign to the side "Free cell pics!" This was very popular and helped identify our group in front of a busy market, even to folks driving by.

Worked: We printed color-text signs and taped them up on a poster next to my life-sized Obama: 'Those who resist Progress are the guardians of the Status Quo'; 'Rebuild and Renew for a Century of Progress!'; 'Show your Support! Will you sign this Pledge now?'; and a final one with green large-fonted 'Energy', 'Health Care', and 'Education', each followed by the Pledge verbiage. This allowed passers-by to get the message, too.

Then, we were wow one of the Events Nationwide that was covered by the media (NBC News/MSNBC) and in their news rotation for that evening and I am soo glad I brought out all the bells and whistles. Some of us are already figuring to do it again next Sat, at another populous location in a progressive area. There's no reason we can't keep doing this semi-regularly. As opposition to him builds, President Obama will need every committed supporter we can bring on board.

O.k. I've had this idea for a while now but have refrained from posting it out of deference to our new Organizing Director. However we have heard nothing since the annoucement from David and we need to become active NOW, because if we continue to wait it will be too late when we finally do.

So here is my suggestion. It was our ground game that won this election and had the Republicans shaking in their boots. Yet we are all acting like now our job is done and it's somebody elses responsibiliy. NO IT'S NOT; IT'S STILL OURS!!!

We need to reactivate our ground game and direct it towards the organization of events across the country simply titled "ENOUGH!"

All across the country we need to get all the Precinct Captains re-activated and contact as many Americans as we can to join together at central locations in every city and town to send a message to our government. Make signs with that simply message and even if people have to work they can also participate in the same manner by simply having a sign or a button. They could do so during their lunch breaks and after work where ever they are. Shop owner could post signs in the windows. Housewives and the unemployed in fact all families can tape American flags to their window or hang them outside their windows with the "ENOUGH" written across it.

100,000's thousands at a location and 10's of thousands more just walking the streets in their areas all sending the same message that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! It's time to support our President. He has stood up for us and now WE must stand up for him.

People President Obama can only succeed if we make it clear to Congress, and the media, that they need to get on board with the President or face the consequencs.

We should pick a day make this happen. If we don't the Republicans will continue work to erode his standing, and if we don't work with and for him they will succeed.

The only thing necessary for evil to prevail is that good men people do nothing!! WHAT ARE WE DOING??

Guys what I'm thinking of is an action that will not only have a central point of gathering but which will also encompass an entire city or town should anyone not be able to get to a specific location at a specific time.

Imagine seeing everywhere you look people and shop windows confronting you with the same message ... "Enough"

We can do this. We only need to get people on the ball in every community where they live and then have one person responsible from that community to link up with a command center of sorts to coordinate the logistics. We need to build our own infrastructure of Activism for America and for our President. Dems and Reps are hurting in this economy and Financial ruin is and equal opportunity destroyer. So all American no matter what their affiliation should be standing up and saying "ENOUGH!!"

Let me know you are with me and I'll get down to telling you how we get this thing off the ground ..... See I've already got that part partially figured out too LOL .... But I need help ;-)

Events for change

Greetings all and thank you for reading this blog. At this time we are creating an event we hope many will come to participate in. We have been fortunate enough to secure a facility for 150 people to have seats but we can squeeze a few extra into the space if needed. We have noticed many of the small gatherings can facilitate perhaps 20 persons, and they have been turning people away. Now we have the space for meaningful numbers, so if you are in the Portland area, then come on and sign up for the event.

As our soon to be President said, we have the person in the White House to facilitate change, but we still need the people to make it happen. He cannot do it himself, and we all know how Congress and the Senate are rife with special interests and agendas for the status quo. Change HAS to come from US. We have to be prepared to voice our desire for change from the grass roots level. We HAVE to participate in this change, instead of leaving it for others to do for us. We have to be ready to let the career politicians who would stand for the ststus quo, know that we will not stand for obstruction to the plan we are developing here in the trenches of our neighborhoods.

This is an open suggestion to the Obama campaign for presidency.

With the abundance of donations and the historic achievements this campaign has made utilizing technology and the internet my suggestion is two-fold. Buy one hour of air time either national network or cable distribution and have a webcast/simulcast "Online Town Hall Event" where Mr. Obama takes questions via emails and responds to them live. Have someone engaging to host the discussion and read the questions such as retired General Colin Powell. It's important to speak to "this generation" and show that an Obama administration understands the importance of this new world both - the economy, and what technology brings.

We must elect leaders who are not "technology illiterates" like Bush and McCain - someone like Obama who's engaging audiences in their chosen mediums - that will help lead is in this new century and not be stuck in the past - someone who'll lead us all with change - into a bright new future with hope.

Thanks for visiting our group page! The first few entries of this blog will detail what we've been up to so far, in case you are just joining the conversation.

An inspiring email from David, re: An Obama Event You Can SPELL!

Hello Fellow Obamafolk,

On Saturday October 4th at 2:15PM myself, my family and heaps of Obama
supporters will punctually descend on downtown Keene each carrying a
letter or sign with a letter with the intention of spelling the word
CHANGE. Imagine pumpkinfest, but switch the pumpkins with letters -
one person carrying a huge paper mache"C", another wearing a sandwich
board with an "H" on either side, another carrying a poster with a
bright pink "A", another holding a torn piece of cardboard with "N" in
black marker, another holding a huge toy snake contorted to look like a
"G" and then someone with a bold "E" on their Tshirt. They meet at
Railroad square, introduce themselves, and march around downtown
proudly spelling "Change" along with throngs of other proud spellers.

Joining this happy group will be other signs supporting Obama-Biden
that say "Change You Can Believe In" and other phrases we've heard from
the campaign. The campaign will also be present accepting commitments
to give an hour a week of canvassing neighborhoods - making sure
supporters will vote.

New Hampshire continues to be a toss-up in the polls. We live in a
state that could decide this election. We have to do something. So
why not have some fun doing it?

So please come, and bring a letter.

Obama should visit and focus more on Minnesota

Don't get me wrong, I hate polls and I don't really believe them because of they are skewed and don't sample people with cell phones. I'm just worried by the recent polls that show Obama and McCain even in the state. I know that is not true but with the RNC that was just held here in St. Paul and the way the state had been leaning Republican over the years. I thought that the Obama campaign would want to have another big or even small set off events around Minneapolis and Minnesota. Something to rally people again. I know he has been to Wisconsin a lot but I feel like they need to do another high profile event where he can get big crowds and do smaller events around Minnesota in some of the smaller towns. Minnesota is important and I hope the campaign will remember this. We need to get it out there that we would like another campaign stop soon especially as I learned today McSame and "Tina Fay" are having another event here in Anoka on friday. Obama also needs to spend a little more on TV adds in the state. I have seen a lot of McCain adds (all negative) and none to few from Obama. I think it is time to get MN energized again.

Women's Wednesdays Kick-Off in Portsmouth

This last week was the launch of Women's Wednesdays Women Unite for Change Women-to-Women Outreach in every Campaign for Change office across New Hampshire. About 40 women turned out at the Portsmouth office to hear from several speakers, including State Senators Martha Fuller Clark and Maggie Hassan, about the importance of the women's vote in this presidential election.

After a short welcome and brief remarks from the Senators, participants hit the phones to make calls and reach out to other women in New Hampshire to talk about why they support Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Women's Wednesdays will continue every Wednesday evening until the November 4th election.

Join New Hampshire Women for Obama today and come to your Local Office each Wednesday and get involved to help bring the change we need.

Hey everyone! I would love to get together with young adults who are in support of Obama and his campaign. This is just a quick thought I came up with but any ideas or suggestions are very much welcome. I'd love to make this an event on the site and we can make it a bi-weekly meeting. I feel that we need more events for people our age so we can communicate and feel as if we aren't the only ones out there! We can meet up at a coffee shop and discuss our views, etc. Let me know what you all think, give me some ideas :)

A number of people have requested I post the Obama poster and pins again. These posters and pins have a little story. With only a few weeks left before the big event in Washington DC, our local bake sale fell short to raise the funds for the permits, tables, stage, and other costs for a big rally and fund raiser in Washington DC. A grassroots event is just that, grassroots and cannot receive support from the campaign or the DNC.

With people making plans to attend and bands volunteering, I sat down and painted a portrait of Obama. Not a portrait artist, but I used to paint wildlife in watercolors. Working as a nurse in the ER, I got home from a shift, started painting, answering emails, and trying to keep ahead of a growing event. The grassroots groups have been great help, and it is coming together. I finished the painting and had a limited edition printed off along with pins from the same artwork. I am pleased to say, the stage is being built thanks to everyone!

The original painting will be in Washington DC framed, and raffled off as a fund raiser for the Presidential campaign.

GRASSROOTS FOR OBAMA IN WASHINGTON DC FREEDOM PLAZA, PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE SEPTEMBER 6, 2008

This will be a rare opportunity for grassroots groups from all over the country to unite in the nation's capital.

There will be fund raising and voter registration. This is a high visibility event in Freedom Plaza close to the White House. There will be extensive media coverage as we host Mayors, Climate Change, members of Congress, Sierra Club, Veterans. Bands, performers, grassroots special guests.

French TV has contacted me and they will be filming for a special program about the election and our grassroots movement.

Our stage is being built. I am hoping to find an Obama banner for the stage if you know of any group who has one and can loan it for the event. If you live in the region, come to Washington DC to Freedom Plaza to share our grassroots enthusiasm. If you live across the country, it's a great time to visit your nation's capital and be apart of history.

A word about the ticket. I am so proud to be supporting such talented and inspirational candidates as Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Together they complement the spirit of Hope, Change, and Determination that America represents to the world. I have been fortunate to work with so many people across this country organizing this event. Grassroots have always been the spirit and good intentions of America.

I didn't know anything about organizing an event like this. I just knew I wanted to become involved. I just got onto the site and I began. With a little hard work and love for my country, I found out something about myself, and the other people I encountered.

Hampton Roads Veterans & Military Families for Obama

We had an incredible grassroots event Sunday at Mount Trashmore park in Virginia Beach, VA for Hampton Roads Veterans & Military Families for Obama! Over 130 Veterans, Military Service Members, and Military Families came to show their support for Senator Obama!

A big thank you to our incredible Veteran & Military Family Volunteers! Everyone pitched in to make the event a success; bringing everything from food to grills and reaching out to other Veterans to let them know about our event.

I also want to thank Delegate Joe Bouchard, Mayor Meyera Oberndorf, and Candidate for Congress Glenn Nye for speaking at our event and attending the BBQ. They fired up the crowd, showed their support for Senator Obama, and stayed to talk one on one about the issues we face as Veterans to many of the people that attended.

The BBQ today has made it even more clear to me that a few people with an idea, a love of this great country, and a candidate we believe in can make a big difference. Everyone I spoke to today was ready to do all they can to help Senator Obama win in Virginia.

We support Senator Obama because he has consistently worked to improve the lives of our troops, their families, and Veterans. Senator Obama's voting record and the policies he will implement once he is elected prove that he is the best choice for military families. He will keep the promises that were made to those of us who have served and he will protect our troops by bringing them home in a safe, responsible manner.

Grand Opening: Oregon City, OR Headquarters

Last night, five of six Oregon state headquarters opened. I attended the Oregon City event. It was wonderful! The did a great job of setting up a beautiful office (see the before and after pics on link below) with sign ups at the entry, a Volunteer Raffle to sign up for, pictures with a Barack Obama standee, and delicious treats. It was a warm evening, so the cool beverages were also welcome :) Everyone did a marvelous job of meeting each other and introducing themselves. We were greeted by the DNC office and we learned that the county had just turned BLUE! Also learned that Oregon voter reg #s were in for June and there were 10,000 Democrat and 400 Republican! Rob Hill was in attendance to speak and it was wonderful to meet him.

I read Senator Barak Obama's 2002 Remarks Against Going to War with Iraq; and I re-read it several times. I am struck that his comments were made nearly 6 years ago yet the content of this speech is still relevant. Senator Barack's response to this war "a rash war" speaks to me still today.

"Let's fight to wean ourselves off Middle East oil, through an energy policy that doesn't simply serve the interests of Exxon and Mobil. Those are the battles that we need to fight. Greetings Moms!

It has been awhile. Life, like this campaign, is busy! This week we noticed that our membership has met a milestone we never imagined was possible - 1500 members worldwide. And over 1800 join us from the myspace group. Felt it was a great time to reflect, see who is joining us, and connect with you.

This is an exciting journey that is full of firsts for many of us. I grew up with the notion that it was not proper to talk about religion or politics with company and here I am! Is it your first time voting or giving money to a campaign or attending a political function? I bet one of those applies to you. It is everyday mothers and women like you and me that are helping to fuel this campaign. Our organizational skills, gift of gab, cooking ability (or the cookies from the bakery we pass off as our own!), decorating eye, and more are being utilized AND appreciated. Your time and talents are precious and we thank you for using them to help elect Barack Obama as the next President of the United States.

And drum roll please... meet our 1500th member - Shannon. She is a busy and passionate woman. I can tell she is embodying her own profile quote "We are the change we have been waiting for." This Hillary and Obama supporter is holding a platform meeting in Southern California next weekend . She has phonebanked for Barack with a teenager in tow (way to get them involved!). On July 4th she was inspired to write a blog.

Speaking of events. If you ever host we encourage you to post it to our group for advertising purposes. We "rotate" the main page event listings so your event will have a headline there. Are you overseas? You can now create and post events on this site! Want to host but not sure what to do? I have compiled a list of event ideas seen or done in the grassroots. Just email me directly. Women and mothers have been the lifeblood in our communities and the leaders of change. Who else raises money for the school or leads the cleanup of a local eyesore- an old industrial site or abandoned lot? Thanks to Rosa ALL Americans can sit wherever they want on the bus.

Wishing you could do something for the campaign? Do something, just one thing. You can start by looking at the EVENTS near you. You can get out and work or socialize. Try hosting! Even the administrators for the Moms for Obama have taken the plunge. Earlier this week I hosted a postcard party. Next week Carolyn is hosting a social. Gail is holding a Listening to America Platform meeting later this month.

Ready to connect with your neighbors? You can get a list of voters, script and other information via the site. If leaving home is not an option there are things you can do! Connect with your local grassroots group to see if they need some help. Sit down and write postcards to other voters. You can blog. Make phone calls from home using this site via the ACTION Center. Lend your talents to a fundraiser or event (like quilting squares, organizing the volunteers, or making cakes for bake sales). Hold a yard sale and send the money to the campaign. Connect with your family and tell them why you support Obama and encourage them to consider him too.

...And please reach out to your local Obama for America campaign office. Did you know that many of our Obama organizing fellows, interns, and paid staff may have never lived in your town or state? I admire their enthusiasm, commitment, and HOPE. I encourage you to introduce yourself and see if there are opportunities to lend a hand. Besides needing supplies (trust me it is paper- be it toilet or computer!) they love getting contact information for community groups and leaders. While you are it- why not invite them over for dinner? You have at least one thing in common ;)

The event will be held at Mt Trashmore on Sunday, August 3, at 3:00 pm. We have reserved Picnic Shelter 2 which is wheelchair accessible (as are the restrooms). It is at the Edwin Drive entrance on the lake side of the park (to mapquest it the address is 300 Edwin Drive in Virginia Beach).

4th of July Parade -- Report from Sonoma, CA

Wow -- that was fun! It's the first time I've marched in a 4th of July parade. Add that to my first political contribution and all the firsts involved in volunteering -- it's been quite a ride and I look forward to the months ahead as we work to get Obama elected.

We had teens, middle aged and seniors. We had men and women. We had people join in with us from the watching crowd. There were lots of waves and clapping from the onlookers as well. We had a "working class mama for Obama", an "independent for Obama" and a "Republican for Obama" cheerleading the parade as we chanted "Yes We Can! Si Se Puede!". We had a two year old who later will be able to brag that his first 4th of July parade was spent with his father in the parade.

We were quite a mixture in many ways, but we all had tremendous enthusiasm in common. A sense of strength and power exuded from the group, and it was accompanied by excitement and even joy. For me, the excitement was partly born of discovery of unity amidst diversity, that I could be working side by side with people often so different from myself who share a common dream for our country. It's this energy that is running our campaign, and it's not a energy of "blind hope" and insubstantial talk. Just five days ago I'd hosted the study party with some of the same people in attendance, and reading through the 64 page Blueprint for Change with its detailed plans brought home how substantial this campaign is.

Any Republicans for Obama in Indiana? I know they exist, the question is whether they're in MYBO and if they're willing to publically proclaim their support. I know there are many who are whispering!

Went to an Obama community event

And took my 12 year old son! It was terrific! Only about 25 people were expected, and three times that showed up.

We talked about Barack's candidacy, the environment, and myriad other topics that were on everyone's mind. Our hopes and dreams for the future of our country were on everyone's lips. People shared ideas, a local activist and Senatorial candidate Howard Shanker showed up and spoke to us all, as did an acoustic band that performed a song they wrote about Obama.

It was a wonderful experience for both my son and myself, and I can't wait until the next event here in the Quad-City area.

Obama Study Group Ideas

Now that I've hosted the study "party", here's a report on what happened and some ideas of what I would recommend for future study meetings.

At least 13 people signed up, but 7 actually showed up despite emails to those who had signed up asking them to tell me if they weren't coming. I had made a waiting list as I thought I'd have too many, so I'd say plan on half the number coming and set your maximum attendance on MyBo for more than you can actually handle when you plan an event. As for a study group, this was actually a good number, so I'd say shoot for 6 to 10 people as someone recommended earlier.

I had called it a Study "Party" -- not sure why -- but someone came with wine which didn't fit in too well with studying so I wouldn't call it a party in the future. It's good to be really clear in your description of what the event is.

About being clear on the description. Since it was the first time I did this and there weren't any precedents, I left things a bit open. As a result there was a bit of confusion at first as to how we would proceed and that left things open for people to make their opinions known as to how they would like it to go (and that wasn't always how I saw things going). So I'd say think of how you want to approach the study process and make that a part of your description of the group from the beginning. Then reiterate that when you start the meeting.

What we ended up doing, and what I think was a great format, is reading through the Blueprint for Change. In just one meeting we had time to read through each issue "at a glance", and then begin to go into depth in one area. This accomplished several things -- first everyone got familiarized with the Blueprint and how it's organized. Someone in the group was also able to point out that in the descriptions of issues online, how each of these areas will be funded can be found at the bottom of the page. If you have ongoing meetings, you could take one area at a time, but in any case I highly recommend working with that document. It's 64 pages. One person had printed it out and made copies which most people chipped in for. You could encourage people to bring their own, or just pass one around.

Some guidelines I set up --

Our purpose was to learn Obama's positions, not to discuss their merits or our opinions, and
discussion was to be for the purpose of clarifying the issues or positions. This was helpful. Some people in our group were quite knowledgeable in certain areas and it was very informative.

I also made it clear the meeting would end on time and ended the discussion 15 mins before ending time. That was what was comfortable for me. If it's in your home, you get to decide that kind of thing. If you don't mind lingering on and socializing afterwards, or want to do that, then you can set the tone for that to happen.

A few other "tips" --

If you use the MyBo Event planner, then sign up for the event yourself if someone is coming who doesn't signup through MyBo. I had several people coming who responded to an email and I added numbers in for them through my signup. Kind of complicated but the Event tool tops taking signups when the capacity is full.

Well, that's all I have energy to type today! If I think of more, I'll add it in another post.

I encourage anyone who wants to do this, whether you do it on your own with friends or set up an event online!

Reflecting on my first Obama event

I went to an event called In It To Win It at a home here in Decatur this weekend. It was absolutely phenomenal. I didn't know quite what to expect from the description, but I was interested in getting involved and this seemed like a good place to start. It defied every expectation I had.

It was an ecclectic group of people - a nice mix of ages, races, gender, and occuptation. It's always nice to meet new thoughtful people. In that mix, it turned out that there was a very wide range of opinions, perceptions, and feelings about Obama and the election. As we each shared why we came and/or why we support Obama, we began to realize that there were some deeply held beliefs, perceptions, and feelings that were at odds with each other. There was a woman who described feeling "disrespected" by Obama supporters because she was a Hillary supporter, another woman who said she'd never met a Hillary supporter before in her life, and a man who believes that Obama is fulfilling the Lord's purpose by providing hope and leadership by example. I enjoyed hearing them all. As we talked, it became very clear though that there is a difference between hearing and listening, or as the hostess put it, "I had listened to the voices, but I hadn't allowed myself to hear the heart, and the truth, of what you [Hillary supporters] had been saying."

Perhaps it was because I was the baby of the group, but I was eager to get the group together again, this time in a more proactive way. I felt that the experience had been so transformative and moving, and as a group we share a belief that the best way to persuade someone of your position is on a one-to-one, personal level. So, we decided that I would host the next "group" event, with the challenge that each person who had come that day would bring 1 person who was NOT an Obama supporter. The goal for the meeting is to really, really, actively listen to the hopes, concerns, fears, feelings, and stories of non-Obama supporters as a way of respecting where they are, and the truth of their life experience, while also providing a space to share our own beliefs and hopes for our country and Obama.

I'm so excited about this I can't contain it! I'd love to know if anyone else has tried something like this, and would be willing to share how it went. I give massive kudos to the hostess, Ruth Waller, of the event that I went to last weekend, and I thank she and Senator Obama for truly uniting a group of people who might otherwise never have come together.

I attended Two wonderful Unite for Change Events

Ohh what a wonderful day today was. I attended two Unite for Change home events. The first was excellence in motion. People of all faces, races and levels were at these two events. Passionate speakers, good food!

At today's second event (First Americans United for Change) there was an original Tuskegee Airman at the event! The crowd was shown his Congressional Medal of Honor and a picture featuring his receiving his award. When the meeting disbanded, I hugged this wonderful Airman and I personally thanked him for such a distinguished military tour and for serving our country. AHHH!!

Prior to attending these two events, I had to go to the bank, and the bank teller told me her boyfriend wasn't registered to vote. I gave her a form for her boyfriend.

After leaving the second meeting, I went to an electronics store; and the gentleman who helped me was not registered to vote but will vote for Obama in November. I had my voter registration forms available. (I'm a volunteer for the campaign.)

People all over are amped up. The campaign torch has been lit like the Olympics Torch by our dear Senator and Mrs. Obama. People are excited, and the excitement doesn't wane. I'm so glad I attended the two events I said I would today.

I wanted to set up a campaign system like this 9 years ago, but couldn't get anyone to listen to me, I bet they're listening now. But if they are Republican, go and get your own help!

The Step Back, Take a Deep Breath Event

On June 28th, many of us will host or attend a "Unite for Change" house meeting. The "Step Back, Take a Deep Breath Event" is a pre-event event of sorts.

Barack Obama has made it clear that he would rather lose with integrity, than win with a negative, dirty campaign. He has set an example of calm, positive, respectful campaigning that is unprecedented and inspiring, even in light of so many personal attacks against him, his family, his friends, and his supporters. Senator Obama is a model for us as we deal with people in our lives and on the Internet.

The general election has begun. We've just ended an emotional primary. We're up against an opponent more than happy to use old school, negative, dirty campaigning. It is so easy right now to get angry, to respond negatively, to get caught up into a downward spiral of name calling and fighting, even amongst ourselves.

We need to reset, reboot, take a deep breath and restart our brains and our emotions. This "event" is a moment, a few minutes before our house party, to do just that. Wherever you are, close your eyes, take a deep breath, let go of the past, clear your heart, and visualize how you intend to represent Barack Obama during the house party AND for the next five months. Commit to thinking, "What Would Obama Do?" every time you feel the urge to retaliate, whine, attack, or respond-in-kind to negativity.

the magic of holding an event

I signed up to host an event for Obama on June 7th ant the nearby park. I thought that as in past years I would have a few people who might want to come out to help register voters for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon and bring thier kids. Well, Like most things this year when supporting Obama this event is quite different! I have found that there are more people that want to work to help him get elected than I thought possible when I started. I now have 99 people comming and this little evelt is going to be sooo... much fun. We will register people, eat good food, talk, meet our kids will play and we can start to organize for the genneral election campaign. This does feel like the grass roots of old.

Obama Bridges Project

Hi Everyone,

I am a US citizen who lives in Switzerland and just participated in the Obama Bridges Project, which is a project that consist of taking pictures of Obama supporters, replete with banners, signs and t-shirts, on bridges around the world. This was an was AMAZING experience and as a former resident of NYC and I am traveling to NY on 31 May and would like to help organize a photo on the infamous Brookly Bridge on Sunday 1 June.

This project is the brainchild of Meredith Wheeler of DA France, and is making its way around the world.
Great pictures have already been taken, from Vancouver to Jakarta to London, and are continuing. This montage of photos will be shown to Howard Dean in July with the goal of showing it at the DNC in August and be used as images of global unity for Obama. For the full story, see the NYTimes article:

Who Knows That YOU Support Obama

A new challenge... THREE A DAY TO ELECTION DAY.. when you consider that the recommended daily allowance of fruits and vegetables is five - agreeing to talk to three people a day about Barack Obama seems a minimal goal to say the least.

This event looks to each of us to build a cumulative effect between now and November. Simply make the goal to speak to three DIFFERENT people everyday about your support of Barack Obama. Your aren't counting those you convert - just those you speak to.

You might consider using the phone banking system to reach three different people. Or take advantage of Obama gear (like buttons and stickers) to help people approach you. Maybe you will just make a special point to pick up the phone or send an email to friends, co-workers and others you go to church or enjoy a hobby with.

Nothing hardcore. Just a conversation. No major point to make, just give these folks the heads' up that you support Obama and are willing to answer their questions or help them with concerns.

Of course, talking to folks on my.barackobama.com doesn't really count ... unless maybe you are turning them on to the challenge. Talking to 30 people in one day doesn't mean you can ignore the challenge for the next 10 days either. Every morning when you wake up, this challenge has to be as regular as brushing your teeth.

The goal is three conversations. Three opportunities for you to share with someone specific information about Barack Obama so a one way communication (seeing your Obama gear, posting a blog or a comment) doesn't accomplish it.

If you read this and go, wow! Three different people... I don't know if I can be in touch with that many different people! YOU are the one we need most, because if you are that insulated the odds are that the people around you probably are to.

Consider using the phone bank system on www.my.barackobama.com . If that idea sounds a bit ambitious, come join the group Barack's Inspired Phone Bank Army first.. as a way to get advice and support before you pick up that phone.

How you do it isn't the critical part. The critical part is that each of us has to be aware that this Election will be won on the ground and between now and November each of us can canvas everyday. Three A Day Til Election Day.

Vermont Delegate Update

Greetings fellow delegates!

Some of you are undoubtedly new to the delegate role, as I am, but information is trickling in.

1. Congrats to the 110 or so Obama delegates from town causes, who successfully submitted their Statement of Candidacy/Pledge of Support forms, and are now campaigning to become Vermont delegates for Obama to the National Democratic Convention. 2. The goal at the state convention May 24th is to select Vermont's delegation to Denver. Vermont is allocated 10 district-level delegates and 3 district-level alternates. Based on the results of Vermont presidential preference primary on March 4th, those delegates will be awarded as follows: Obama gets six district-level delegates, three males and three females, Clinton gets 4 district-level delegates, two males and two females. Obama gets two alternates, one male and one female, Clinton gets one female alternate.

3. There will be a final delegate training session on Wednesday, May 14th at 6:00pm at 38 Eastwood Drive, So. Burlington.

4. Hopefully, you have received information from Joanne Boyle (who's helping organize the VDP Convention on 5/24). She sent information about development/placement of ads in the program and/or renting of table space at the convention to help promote your delegate candidacy. If you did not receive her message, I encourage you to contact her at jm(dot)boyle(at)yahoo(dot)com

5. If you cannot afford an ad or table - you can personally distribute flyers at the convention. I also invite you to introduce yourself to the Vermonte Delegates for Obama group via a blog post, and/or a message to the group. Lastly, you can also campaign via the web opportunity below.

6. Neil Jensen of Vermonters for Obama, is graciously offering space on his website for national delegates to make their case. He says, "Just send me an email at info@vermontersforobama.org with a statement in support of your candidacy -- and I'll post it online for you. If you participate, your name will be posted in alphabetical order at http://vermontersforobama.org/delegates and will be linked to your candidate statement. You can send statements either as text in an email, a Microsoft Word or PDF attachment, or just a link to another website, whichever you prefer. The Wisconsin State Journal ran a big special feature on the Wright controversy yesterday (5-4) on the front page of the Forum section. They have invited readers to answer the following questions: Will Sen. Obama be able to overcome the controversy over his former pastor's outspoken views? Is the flap merely overblown media hype?

Submissions must be 200 words or less, submitted by Wednesday (5-7) to wsjopine@madison.com, for publication next Sunday.

Please write to show your support for Sen. Obama, and ask them to devote their time to more substantive issues.

Fundraising

There are two main ways to donate to the campaign. One is through the main DONATE NOW page on barackobama.com and the other way is to donate through someone's personal fundraiser.

You are allowed to have one fundraiser for your account. You can make it personal by using your own story or make it in honor of someone or something in your life. Find the link to set up a new fundraiser, follow the prompts, and you will see it appear on your dashboard.

You can invite people to donate in the same way as you would invite them to one of your events.

When someone donates to your fundraiser, you will get an email letting you know about it and any personal message the person donated may have for you. When you go in to manage your fundraiser, there will be a reminder to send them a thank you note.

As with some of the other my.BO features, you will be given the person's real name, not their display name. If you want to know who they are on my.BO, just ask them in the thank you note!

It is not a good idea to use the group emails to invite people to donate. However, you can post it on your blog, in the community blogs, and even send out requests to your friends.

As with other invites, please DO NOT send your email requests over and over. Also realize many people have their own fundraising going on and some people only like to donate through the main donation link.

Callers simply dial the number and enter their zip code and are then given the location and hours of the One-Stop Early Vote location nearest them. Obama Event Volunteering in Columbus, Indiana

Yesterday, April 11th, my wife, Sharon, and I volunteered at the Barack Obama Road to Change Indiana Tour 2008 at Columbus East High School in Columbus, Indiana. It was a last minute opportunity, literally invited by the Field Organizer, Rick Scalf, the night before.

Being an hour and a half away, we got up early and arrived before 8 am. There was already a huge crowd in line, some of whom had slept overnight to get good seats.

As volunteers, Sharon and I got in early, went through security (pretty serious), and were gathered to learn our jobs for the day. After a brief orientation, we were divided into groups with group leaders. Sharon and I were assigned to be ushers, but were later reassigned to help gather people from the audience to sit in the stands behind the Senator. Have you ever watched a Town Hall speech and thought, how did those people get to be behind Senator Obama? Well, for this event, at least, we simply went into the audience, chose a good variety of voter-aged people and asked if they'd like to be on TV. Almost all said yes. It was fun. Some people got mad that we didn't "choose" them, thinking we were being racist or agist or something, but we had to pull about 50 people out of a crowd of thousands and simply not have a single demographic overrepresented. In other words, we had to populate the people that were going to be on all the news channels behind Obama with a crowd that was similar to the full crowd. I don't see anything wrong with that, and prefer that to those people being "dignitaries" or people who are young and tough enough to sleep in a tent all night.

It was impressive to watch him walk around, being sure to address everyone - no teleprompter, no hiding behind a podium. I expected to be moved, but not at the level I was. I was almost in tears when Senator Obama said we need to get back to the Constitution, and the crowd stood up applauding. As a Republican, I am a strong Constitutionalist, and, as Obama embraces the Constitution, the Republicans in power today are tearing it apart. To see the crowd show the same strong feelings about the Constitution as me gave me hope for the future.

After his speech, Senator Obama walked around shaking hands. His Secret Service agents (heroes, every one), made you feel he was safe, something I've been worried about. As a volunteer, I didn't feel right pushing through the crowd for a handshake, but I did get fairly close:

Sharon had brought my copy of The Audacity of Hope, which the main event coordinator, Ethan, took before the event. Afterwards, he gave it back, signed by Senator Obama. Excellent...

We helped people leave, tried to encourage people to volunteer, and then helped clean up. It was a great experience I will gladly repeat, and I strongly encourage others to try.

This Saturday, I will deliver my plan to begin a smart, phased withdrawal out of Iraq to the White House and Congress and I'd like you to be there.

I will also officially announce that I have filed with the Virginia Democratic Party to be on the ballot in June, and I am ready to take a symbolic first step toward getting our country back on track.

Along with supporters like you, I will walk sixteen miles from the Veterans' Memorial on the Vienna Town Green to the United States Capitol to show my support for our troops and to deliver my plan for a smart, phased withdrawal from Iraq.

Our nation has run off track. I'm sure you share my disappointment with the recent congressional testimony of US leaders in Iraq. Once again, the Bush administration has failed our troops and our nation. It is time to take action.

I agreed to turn off my TV for 1 week. Can't believe I signed up for this event and definitely can't believe I would be experiencing such withdrawal symptoms from the News!! I've never been a big news watcher...actually have pretty much avoided it since the Iraq War (too painful to watch with my sons being in the military). Since getting involved with the Obama campaign, I've done nothing but watch from morning to night. This is day 2 of 7 and I'm truly not sure if I'll make it. I'm finding it extremely difficult to not know what's going on and knowing about it first hand!! No Tickets for Supporters

Barack Obama is coming to Indianapolis this Saturday...YEAH!

I heard the announcement yesterday on the news and contacted all my family and friends to give further encouragement for his presidency. Unfortunately, the details of the trip were unavailable. So I checked the local news sites and barackobama.com every couple hours to see if there's an update on the details.

Finally, I get a message in my Inbox about the event. I am so overjoyed since I've been a long-time supporter, activist and contributor to his campaign. I click on the great little "RSVP" button only to arrive at a page saying "Sorry, no tickets are available. You must have a ticket to attend the event." What?!?!

So I wrote a letter to the campaign, which responded with an auto-reply that it may take days or even weeks to respond due to correspondence volume. So I called the national campaign headquarters since I am still unable to find any information on an Obama office in Indiana. The national headquarters basically said, "Yes. It filled up in less than 30 minutes."

Well, first let me say...I'm really happy that the event sold out. But the venue is extremely small in a high school gymnasium and to turn away supporters and contributors that are working hard to advocate for this campaign is both disheartening and ostracizing an important aspect of the campaign particularly in light of Republican-dominated state such as Indiana. Why doesn't the campaign find other larger venues to accommodate larger audiences. Isn't the idea to win votes, delegates, states, popular vote, etc?!?!?

I'm keeping some faith that the campaign will respond and make this opportunity happen for me. Otherwise, I'll still go to the event, but I'll be the one with the sign that says, "Want My Vote??...Need a Ticket." My campaign spirit took a big setback today. I'm fired up and ready to go.

After last night it is becoming evident that this election will be decided in Denver in Aug. These superdelegates need to made aware what the people want. To get this message across, I believe that we should began to let our voice be heard by going to Denver. We need to start now. Therefore I propose that we start sending out invitations to everyone we know to go with us and be heard. To begin this journey I will create an event to see what respone we will get and build from there. Needless to say there will be a need to book rooms and transportation for all who want to be a part of this historical chapter in our history. I will get in touch with John and the JaxforObama and run this idea by him before creating this as an event. I am urging everone to beging to think about our journey and assist in planning for the road to the White House. The voices of millions declaring "Yes We Can" cannot be ignored. The first event will be a Honk and Wave tomorrow (Friday, 2/29) at the intersection of Rte. 5 and Rte. 14 in White River Junction. This will take place from 4:45 - 5:45 so that we can focus on travelers during the afternoon rush hour. You can learn more about the event here.

We are also planning an event on Monday, 3/3. That will most likely be a Honk and Wave at the same intersection, but during morning rush hour to target a different group of drivers. I will post more information once we have more concrete plans.
