Berks League of Women Voters Statement on Coroner's Race

IMPORTANT: Please read this statement from the LWV regarding the County Coroner's race. 10/28/09 News Release: League of Women Voters of Berks County In a campaign mass mailing by the Republican candidate for Berks County Coroner there is the following statement: "FACT: Nick Bybel MD is the most qualified candidate for the office of coroner. (League of Women Voters Forum, 9/29/09)" While this statement may have been made during the Candidates Forum by a candidate or a supporter, it was not made by the League of Women Voters of Berks County moderator. We are demanding a written retraction of this misleading statement from the Elect Doctor Bybel Corner Committee and the Berks County Republican Committee, immediately. We further demand that this retraction be mailed to the mailing list which received the erroneous material as well as a retraction to appear in the Reading Eagle. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization that does not endorse candidates but provides forums to inform voters. The League does not support or oppose any political party or any candidate, but does and always has taken stands on issues which its members have studied. According to our By-Laws, Article II, Section 2, The League shall not support or oppose any political party or any candidate. (copies available upon request) The League of Women Voters began formally as an organization in February 1920 in Chicago, six months before the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment giving women the right to vote. Our mission is to LET PEOPLE KNOW. MAKE PEOPLE CARE. HELP PEOPLE ACT. The purpose of the LWV is to create in citizens a sense of responsibility for knowing about governmental problems and doing something about them. The above link is a very good article by USA Today featuring some recent census data. Among other things, it points out something very relevant to the next election:

"Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia had higher poverty rates than the national average, many of them in the South, such as Mississippi (21.2%), Kentucky, Arkansas and Louisiana (each with 17.3%). That's compared with 19 states and the District of Columbia that ranked above U.S. poverty in 2007."

Blue Dogs and Health Care

I am furious about the lack of party cohesion behind the agenda which WE ELECTED Democrats to fulfill. I am appalled by the defection of the Blue Dogs. I will be more than willing, come November, to contribute grassroots support and money to unseat any Blue Dogs and support their liberal opponents regardless. There will be no more supporting "pseudo" Democrats for the good of the party. It does the party no good.

To address the Blue Dogs directly: What do think you are going to accomplish by acting like Republicans? Do you really think that if the Democrats fail to pass real health reform, people are going to vote for a Democrat who is sort of like a Republican, vs. putting an actual Republican back in office to replace you? The whole point of your existence is to prove to people that there IS a difference between the parties and that Democrats do have more to offer, so stop betraying your own party and slowing down an agenda that is crucial to everyday Americans. All of the Blue Dogs who are “proudly” manipulating health care legislation should be utterly and totally ashamed of themselves.

"The votes just aren't there"?

We need large-scale health care reform and a vigorous bill to get us there. Nibbling around the edges will not do.

To any member of Congress who says, “The votes just aren’t there” for a strong reform bill, we need to note that “The votes just won’t be there” in the next primary or general election if you do not take leadership on getting a strong bill through.

The forces of "do nothing on health care" are hard at work. Now we need to bypass all the posturing and wordplay and make it plain enough that even a member of Congress can understand: we want real health care reform that includes every American.
