Colorado Rural Tour Day Three: Photos

Friday wrapped up the Campaign for Change Rural Tour. The RV worked (and sometimes strained) its way up the Western Slope back towards Denver.

The towns of Olathe, Hotchkiss, Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs, Edwards, and finally Dillon all got to see the Campaign for Change RV roll through and hear its passengers, Agriculture Commissioner John Stulp, Former Governor Roy Romer, and US Senator Ken Salazar tell them why Senator Obama is the best choice for rural America

McCain's Co-Chair in Maine shouldn't be speculating about Edwards

Many Mainers were shocked when Sen. Susan Collins speculated on a radio show about John Edwards's adultery since it opens the door to the discussion of Sen. McCain's admitted adultery.

If you don't know about McCain's first marriage and why he left his sick wife and children, you should do a bit of research. We can't afford to have a man like that be the leader of the free world.

This issue is important for a couple of reasons: to begin, it establishes clearly that McCain's moral fiber is hardly the stuff of Presidents. But it also illustrates that Susan Collins is a catty and inappropriate person for Mainers to have in the Senate.

To find out about this, I suggest you read not only the article in the Portland Press Herald, but that you read the public forum posts as well.

If a few people post their thoughts and make this a "popular" forum subject, then it will appear with a direct link on the front page of the online.

If Edwards Had Withdrawn Before Iowa

Howard Wolfson of the Clinton campaign claimed that—if John Edwards had realized that he could not win, and withdrew from the 2008 Democratic presidential campaign before the Iowa caucus—then Hillary Clinton would have won the Iowa caucus and steamrolled from there to the Democratic nomination.

This is outrageous fiction! Early in the 2008 Democratic presidential campaign, supporters chose one of two groups: Clinton and ABC (Anyone But Clinton).

Actually, Clinton was aided by the large field of Democratic candidates, because they split the ABC votes into 7 parts--thus making it easier for Clinton to win.

Wolfson fantasizes that the Edwards supporters' second choice would have been Clinton; but, among the Edwards supporters that I have met, Obama was the second choice.

Publicly, Hillary Clinton is supporting Obama; but, at the national convention in Denver, she still wants to have a roll call vote of the states. As an old song lyric said, “There is 'No, no' on your lips, but there is 'Yes, yes' in your eyes.” The Democratic Party needs unity in order to win the November election, but the Clinton campaign is continuing the primary struggle into the convention.

Why The Edwards Story Is Worse For John McCain

When something bad happens to a well-known leader in the Democratic Party, you might expect that the Democratic Party might suffer.

Those of us that have been paying close attention to this election have noticed that Republicans have been quick to exploit any news story that can be distorted to discreditBarack Obama. But with the Edwards story, John McCain and the Republicans are treading lightly this time.

Why? Because John McCain's vapid, shallow and crotchety campaign has been based on two things:

First, the McCain campaign is out to assassinate the character, policies and campaign narrative of Barack Obama with an alarmingly vitriolic and immature tone that more and more voters are finding repulsive.

The second part of the McCain campaign strategy is to continue his hyperbolic glamorization about his service and character. John McCain wants you to believe that getting shot down and beaten up is a qualification to lead, and that taking on populist policy positions as part of an image-making strategy after the Keating Five scandal somehow validates the assertion that he is an independent minded maverick.

There is a growing consensus throughout the voting community that John McCain’s self-manufactured image as maverick-foreign affairs guru-former fly-boy is little more than a thin marketing strategy that worked better eight years ago.

So, of course John McCain doesn’t want the public to be reminded of his character flaws, which includes his violent and vulgar temperament as well as his dozen or so marital infidelities.

John McCain’s first wife, Carol waited years for her husband while he was in a P.O.W. camp. When he came home to find that the former model was severely injured in a car accident.

Despite his apparently catastrophic war injuries on the behalf of the Viet Cong, he was able to muster the strength and virility to commit hundreds of infidelities with dozens of women.

When he finally found an FWB who had extensive connections in Republican politics and who was a millionaire heiress to the Anheuser-Busch fortune, he left Carol outright.

McCain even had the audacity to get a marriage license to wed Cindy McCain, (the infamous pill-popping Stepford Wife) before his divorce with Carol was final.

So, while John Edwards was egregiously unfaithful, I’m sure McCain would like it better if the public wasn’t talking about the marital infidelities of politicians.

Especially when his character-myth is the lynchpin of his campaign narrative.

A good old fashion picnic with a tried and true StarBucks concept, a PICNIC IN THE PARK Drive-Thru Voter Registration & Meet The Candidates Event, SUNDAY, AUGUST 17th 2pm-7pm at Tualatin Community Park, Tualatin. It's an old fashion POTLUCK and it's BYOB - bring your own BBQ meats, beverages and beach chairs.

Congressional Senate Candidate, Jeff Merkley is a special guest and will talk one-on-one with picnickers as a key stop in the Tualatin/Tigard community part of his 100 Towns Tour for Change across Oregon. Tigard Representative, Larry Galizio is the key note speaker. Local candidates Jessica Adamson (Sherwood/ Wilsonville) and Jeff Barker (Aloha) will also join in the afternoon festivities.

The event following on the heels of the the Annual Tualatin Crawfish Festival a week prior serves up a fun relaxing afternoon with Obama and Democrat supporters from all over Washington County. Children will enjoy the new playground area with decorative gym climbs, and a scenic viewing area overlooking the beautiful Tualatin River. SUNDAY, AUGUST 17th 2pm-7pm at Tualatin Community Park.

Jeff Merkley is a special guest and will talk one-on-one with picknickers as a key stop in the Tualatin/Tigard community as part of his 100 Towns Tour for Change across Oregon. Merkley leads Gordon Smith in the latest poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports for the hotly contested US Senate seat while another internal poll shows Merkley surging ahead by 11 points among voters who could rate both candidates.

Rep. Larry Galizio (Tigard) is the key note speaker along with Lupita Maurer from WashCoDems tentatively committed. Local candidates Jeff Barker (Aloha), Jessica Adamson (Sherwood/ Wilsonville) and Ron Morgan, Field Organzier from WashCoDems will also be attending.

Calling the Obama calvary...What do you need you ask? How Can I help? What What What???

First, review the NEEDS WISH LIST below. Our first priority is LASER Printers with their corresponding TONER CARTRIDGES. Next, desk, chairs and shelves; and a large refrigerator in excellent condition should be sufficient for the office needs. Also at the top of the list is rolls of butcher paper, and red, white and blue poster paints to make many, many posters! We'll take any custom or homemade Obama posters that we can hang on the wall, too.

Starting today, Friday, here is where you can help (and spread the word out to the Oregon Obama community). We need lots of volunteers to help set up and organize the office, everything from cleaning, setting up desks, filing cabinets, shelves and office furniture. Getting computers online, organizing and stocking the office, kitchen and maintenance supplies, in addition to a supply/storage room, even making posters.

We will accept any and all donations or contributions, bring in whatever you have on hand especially office supplies. Again, refer to the Needs Wish List below! Someone will be at the office to accept donations everyday from 10am-9pm.

As a reminder as well, if you're able to, make it a point to bring along lots of SNACKS, FOOD, and BEVERAGES to feed our hard working volunteers, fellows and Field Leaders every time you come to the Obama office. They will appreciate it very very much!

Finally we’ll need many, many volunteers to make phone calls starting Sunday to get the word out about the new office. We'll concentrate on outfitting the office with everything we need and get the word out to our network of supporters throughout Washington County and city of Portland.

We're back in business Obama peeps, we're taking it to the streets and we're not stopping until we get BARACK OBAMA in the White House right! If you know of anybody who might be interested in being a part of our OATs strategy (Oregon Action Team) here in Washington county, don't hesitate to let them know about our introductory Level 1 and 2 meetings! We're looking for dedicated people like yourselves who are interested in the campaign in more than a casual way.

I attended my first meeting this Tuesday. The turnout was fantastic, people were motivated, stimulating and driven campaign supporters with a wide variety of experience including newbies like myself! No experience required except DESIRE and PASSION to insure Barack Obama gets elected come this November and is the President who has his hand on the bible and says "I Do" in January!

Blue turning Purple?

I am just an average person concerned with what is happening to my country. My emotions have been on a roller coaster ride for the last eight years. Is that possible? I was a Kucinich person. I am not unreasonable, I can deal with Edwards. OK OK so we are still heading in the right direction I can go with either Obama or Clinton. Disappointed with Clinton tactics ( so call me naive ) I am now firmly behind Obama thinking that he is someone our congress can work with even with the differences. Now with all Obama's fine tuning my concern continues to grow. I understand some of his apparent changes but this FISA is too important. Why can't he and the other Dems stand strong on just this one issue. My personal opinion is that the neo-conservatives have some kind of hold on the Democrats due in part to information obtained illegally. I am beginning to lean towards a third party, progressive maybe, but for now I can only hope the Obama becomes the president and he shows his real self and that it is the person who gives those great speaches. I can't imagine my country under John McCain.

A Nation's Loss

A little after 4pm yesterday, I heard the news of the death of Tim Russert. This nation has certainly lost a man who was a journalist with integrity. He will be sorely missed for his tenacity of reporting the truth and his ability to make you feel like you knew him. Michelle Malkin - Borg Queen

During a broadcast on Pravda Television, aka Fox News, ever-twitchy, ever-ranty Michelle Malkin sat spewing venom into the airwaves while a chyron below her read, "OUTRAGED LIBERALS: STOP PICKING ON OBAMA'S BABY MAMA!" Pretty classy, right? It's always amazed me that the right gets away with these kind of overt smear tactics. When Ann Coulter stood before her fauning audience of the 34th Annual Conservative Political Action Conference and called John Edwards a "faggot" the MSM simply shook their heads and tittered. "Oh, that Ann Coulter. She's a wiseacre." And probably a man.

Now we have Michelle Malkin, a soulless harpie who, if you watch carefully enough, literally seethes with hatred. If one looks close enough at Malkin's head they will actually see heat waves distorting the air around it, like a patch of blacktop running through the Sonora desert. Something bad happened to this poor wretch. Something from her youth. I was a sailor who visited the Phillipines and can only guess what the catalyst for such supreme hatred could have been. I'm sure that before her mother, Rafaela Maglalang, met her father, young Rafaela spent many a night under quivering, drunken sailors. That kind of family dishoner doesn't wash away easily, not even after you've married an American and taken the last name "Malkin". I'm sure that every time Rafaela had ever laid eyes upon Malkin's doughy white husband a shudder ran up her spine with memories of tainted childhood.

See how disturbing it can be when someone makes illogical leaps when it comes to race, family?

Obama's Running Mate Considerations

Every presidential nominee must consider several factors when choosing a running mate:

Ability to Serve As President: This is the major role of a Vice President. In 2008, Obama should consider people that could, if needed, fill out the rest of his term. Likely candidates are governors, senators and representatives, military officers, and cabinet members (past and present). Some names that have been mentioned are Janet Napolitano, Ed Rendell, Bill Richardson, Kathleen Sebelius, Evan Bayh, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, and Jim Webb.
Agreement on the Role of the Vice President: Reagan refused to accept Ford, who wanted to be a co-president. This situation could be a major reason to avoid asking the runner-up to be a running mate.
Beware of Skeletons in the Closet: George McGovern should have investigated Thomas Eagleton's medical history more closely before choosing him as a running mate. Walter Mondale should have investigated Geraldine Ferraro's husband's business dealings more carefully before choosing Ferraro as a running mate.
Balancing the Ticket in Order to Win the Election: This is the traditional reason for choosing a running mate. Presidential candidates often choose a running mate from a different part of the country. A running mate from one of the swing states—such as Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Florida—might help win that state. Obama has not been in Washington very long, so he might want a running mate with more Washington seniority. On one hand, Obama might want to choose a female running mate. However, since Obama would already be the first black president in history, he might want to avoid any more “firsts” by choosing a white male running mate.

Thoughts on the VP and Washington Politics

This will be my first blog post on the Obama site! Congratulations to Obama and to all of the volunteers and donors across the country who worked to no end over the past five months to help Barack secure this nomination. It's time to get excited, just in case you weren't already.

Like many of you, I'm dissappointed at Mrs. Clinton's decision to not acknowledge Obama as the nominee. However, I think she's doing this for a couple of reasons:

GE campaign advice (why not?)

I'm sure Barack's waiting with bated breath for these pearls of wisdom...

1) hang out with lots of working class white people (duh!)

2) explain how helping ordinary Americans economically is consistent with fiscal responsibility

3) emphasize that the Iraqi people want us out and explain how genocide will be avoided

4) signal that health care mandate could be phased in if his current plan doesn't work as well as envisioned (too many young, healthy people opting out, relying on emergency room, and driving up costs for those paying premiums.)

5) Explain long membership at Trinity United Church of Christ as the result of a strong personal connection arising from his 'finding Jesus Christ,' which overrode a long-standing intellectual disconnect, while at the same time emphasizing the most progressive elements of the New Testament. Don't stress as a campaign theme, but every time it comes up, talk in a very personal way about the personal importance of Jesus and his progressive, inclusive, world-engaging ethics to Obama. Change the subject from Wright to Jesus, in a way that strikes the right tone for progressives.

6) Double-down on change: Pick a female governor (or other executive) as a running mate. This may p.o. Hillary (see http://www.americablog.com/2008/06/clinton-campaign-hillarys-not-gonna.html) and even, at first, many of her core supporters, but given a few months to consider someone like Sebelius on her own merits, many of Hillary's female supporters who overlooked her flaws mainly because she met the litmus test of a 'qualified woman' will have reason to reclaim their dream of a woman president in the the not so distant future. Obama has said a) he wants someone who brings expertise he doesn't have b) foreign policy savvy is not one of those personal deficits c) operational management skills may be (remember debate response about being disorganized). Interestingly, Wes Clark reportedly plugged Kathleen Sebelius for VP at a wind energy event in Texas (Reported on Politico (see http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0608/Wes_Clark_floats_ObamaSebelius.html).

Vice Presidential Choice

I would like to request that if/when Senator Obama becomes the Democratic Candidate for President that he not choose Hilary Clinton as the Vice President. To me, there is a large difference in their vision for leadership of our country. I would much prefer to see former Senator John Edwards as the Vice Presidential Candidate. I think this pairing would create more synergy and a positive working partnership.

I also am a huge fan of Governor Ted Strickland and though it would be a compliment for him to be tapped, I think it is not the best choice. Actually, Ohio has had some rough years and we are finally making positive gains. It is the wrong time to start over with new leadership. Please leave Governor Strickland to help us solve our problems in Ohio.

Edwards for running mate

The Democratic party leadership has failed us time and time again. I can only hope that they have learned from their previous failures and will not sabotage this election with inept decisions. The worst choice they can make at this time is to force Obama to take Hillary as his running mate. This will surely lose him the election. Edwards is the only viable choice. Mcain is weak. He is a dinosaur who is stuck in the past and will only serve to keep our country in the past. This is the time for the Democratic party to stand up and take back the reigns of this country. With Barack not only can this be done but our country can take strides into the future that will benefit generations to come. Making Hillary the running mate will surely cause Barack to lose many democratic supporters but especially all the people waffling on the fence will surely vote against him. Hillary has proven herself to be a corporate Republican. The only job she has held has been working as a corporate lawyer in a prestigious corporate law firm. She has proven herself to be hungry for power at all costs. The average Democrat does not want her anywhere near the presidential seat of power. Most assuredly she will not get any Republican votes. This all seems like common sense but again... the democratic party leaders have failed us before.

Time for unity

So around June 4th, after another 90 Super Delegates have come out in support of Obama, doesn't it make sense for all of the contenders who ran for the Democratic nomination to appear with Senator Obama on stage to make the following announcement together?

Mrs. Clinton opens the presentation - "Eighteen months ago, when this contest started, we stood on the stage as contenders for the same single position. Now that the process is over we have come together again to announce that we are working together to support the will of all the people. Senator Obama will be our candidate for President and I congratulate him for the battle he has fought and pledge to support him in any way I can, and I hope those who have supported me so generously and ardently will join me in my support for Senator Obama."

Then after the applause dies down Senator Obama says - "And Mrs Clinton has graciously accepted my request that she be my running mate and that we now work together to unify our party and to win in November. We are proud to announce that our cabinet will include Bill Richardson as Secretary of State, Dennis Kucinich as Attorney General, Chris Dodd as Director of the Office of Management and Budget, John Edwards as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Joe Biden as the Secretary of Defense, Tom Vilsack as Secretary of Commerce, Mike Gravel as Special Project officer for the reform of the Electoral system of the US, and President William Jefferson Clinton has accepted our appointment as Ambassador to the United Nations."

John Edwards says, "Each of us brings to this team a different perspective and a unique point of view. We each represent a group of constituents and colleagues who we now offer to the larger good of the entire United States of America."

Then in Spanish Bill Richardson says, "We are one team working for one goal, to bring democratic values to government and true equality to the people of the United States."

Then Senator Obama simply opens the floor to questions and for two hours or more our nominees talk with us about our future and how we can work together to get out of Iraq, improve our relationships all over the world, revive our economy, remain safe without sacrificing freedom, educate our children for the 21st Century, provide health care for all Americans, mend our crumbling physical infrastructure, bring impartiality back to our Federal Courts, reform our immigration system with an enforceable guest worker program and re-introduction of immigration for those who can help us, like nurses, doctors, scientists, and business owners from around the world.

Call me naive, but this is a scenario that I think makes sense not only for the Executive branch, but to help win overwhelming progressive majorities in both houses of Congress. Then we have four or eight years to roll back the conservative take-over of the judiciary and return us to rule of law, not rule by elites.

Florida and Michigan-some numbers

Do Florida and Michigan really make as much difference as the Clinton camp claim to think they will? Or rather, if the seating of the delegates is properly and fairly handled, should they make much of a difference?

Let me say at the start that I think, along with the Governor of New York, the rules should be upheld, and that Florida and Michigan, who flagrantly broke those rules, should not be allowed to have a voice in choosing the presidential or vice-presidential nominee. I also do not think that either state, or the Clinton camp, have a leg to stand on in terms of what is fair.

However, for the sake of party unity and for the best shot at November 2008, I can see how some sort of compromise would be a good idea. So, based on the “results” of both primaries and the circumstances in which they were held, I think the fairest solution would be for Michigan’s delegation to be halved and split down the middle and Clinton to get a net gain of one delegate from a similarly halved Floridian delegation.

Here is my reasoning:

Michigan

Michigan’s primary was not even a “beauty contest”. It did not even have Obama or Edwards on the ballot, for both were obeying the request of the DNC to remove their names from the ballot. Clinton disobeyed rules her own supporters had at the time helped formulate and had agreed to. Clinton should not be rewarded for disobeying her own party. If Michigan’s result was allowed to stand it would be an outrage and, as significantly, make a major inroad into Obama’s current lead (of 156 pledged delegates), because Clinton would get 70 delegates (55% of 128 delegates) to none for Obama .

One might well argue that the situation is not quite that bad, because the “Uncommitted” delegates, roughly 51 in total (40% 0f 128) might well be for Obama, but at the moment there is no guarantee of that. If the Michigan result is somehow let stand, there should at the very least be such a guarantee, because clearly anyone who voted for “Uncommitted’ was in effect voting “Not Hillary” (nor Dodd, Kucinich nor Gravel). The one thing, therefore, that the “Uncommitted” delegates should not be allowed to do is vote for Clinton. But should they all vote for Obama? Yes. Since Michigan both Edwards and Richardson have endorsed Obama, so therefore all the candidates under the rubric of “Uncommitted” are Obama supporters, or supporters of Obama endorsers, and should be treated as Obama delegates.

At the very most, therefore, in what is still a very unfair situation, (Obama never campaigned, and voting for “Uncommitted” is not the same as voting for a person), Clinton would gain a net 19 delegates. However, both Michigan and Florida should not be fully seated at the convention, because they have to be punished for their breaking the rules, so if they are allowed in, their delegates, much like Florida’s similarly punished Republican delegates, (and the delegates of Democrats Abroad), should only have half a vote each. This would narrow Clinton’s gain to 9.5 delegates, which, for the sake of compromise might be acceptable, and should not make that much of a difference in the end. But, given she also broke the rules by leaving her name on the ballot, the fairest solution would be for the halved delegation to be split down the middle—with no net gain for either candidate.

Florida

Florida’s primary did have the candidates’ names on the ballot, so it was, as Obama put it recently, a “name-recognition contest” but not much more than that, because none of the candidates campaigned there—when they were following the rules. Clinton effectively broke those rules when she saw she was slipping, and held a victory party in Florida the night of the primary. And one of her main remaining arguments is, as we have heard her make completely disingenuously in the last days, is that in Florida one should, this time around, “count every vote”.

She is saying that because if the primary/ “beauty contest” results were taken at face value, then she would net about 31 delegates, again a sizeable chunk. This is because she would win roughly 50% of 185 delegates, whereas Obama would win 33% of them, a difference of 17% (17% of 185 is 31). This would seem to be a good reason why Clinton is so hell bent on getting Florida seated.

But not so fast! The Clinton logic is compromised by the fact that at that point in the primary campaign Edwards, Richardson and Dodd, now all endorsers of Obama, were still also on the ballot. If we follow the logic applied above to Michigan so that Michigan’s “Uncommitted” category should now all be counted for Obama, so in Florida the votes for Edwards (14.4%), Richardson (1%), and Dodd (0.3%) should also be added to Obama’s total. Once this is done, then the vote for Obama and his endorsers becomes 48.5%, with a net difference from Clinton of 1.3% (49.8%-48.5%), which works out at about 2 delegates (1.3% of 185 is 2.4). So, if we really do want to “count every vote”, then Clinton’s net gain is all of two delegates. Once we impose the same penalty on Florida that we did on Michigan by halving their votes, then the net gain of Clinton for Florida should be one delegate.

Of the candidate/endorsers, admittedly, only Edwards had a significant enough vote to gain actual delegates, and if this is taken into account, then the gap is 2.5% (49.8-47.3) for a total net gain of 5 delegates for Clinton, or 2.5 if the delegate votes are halved. This consideration really ought to be taken into account. If the Florida result is, unfairly, accepted on its face value, then Edwards and/or his delegates should be included in the calculation—in favour of Obama. But if we really want to “count every vote” then Richardson and Dodd’s votes should also be included with Obama’s, leaving Clinton with that one delegate advantage.

So, if Florida and Michigan are included, in as fair a way as possible, the net gain for Clinton should be one delegate. If it is done in a less fair, but still—for the sake of compromise—acceptable way, then the net Clinton gain would be 9.5 + 1 = 10.5 delegates. I think Obama’s campaign team can handle that.

Birdalone notes this article fails to note the age divide between Obama and Clinton supporters, which has been the most consistent divider. Nor does this article remind us that the three recent Democratic congressional wins were all Blue Dog conservative Democrats, the source for House and Senate Democratic Party majorities in 2006. Blue Dogs are still the biggest group of uncommitted super-delegates.

Also, no one ever writes about how many votes FOR Obama may have been votes AGAINST Clintons (like mine was on Feb. 5), or how many votes FOR Clinton may have been votes AGAINST Obama after Richardson, Biden, Dodd, and Edwards dropped out before Super-Tuesday on Feb. 5.

My pick for an Obama VP in February was Sam Nunn. Interesting to see how many congressional super-delegates agree. Sam Nunn is part of the Hagel-Lugar-Susan Eisenhower nucler non-proliferation team that Obama joined in 2004, and is the heart of Obama's foreign policy and defense spending policy, which he tries to talk about, but the media still ignores. Nunn is the grand-nephew of Dixiecrat congressman Carl Vinson (1915-65 in the House). Maybe a Nunn married to the former Colleen O'Brien could reassure Catholic voters. (Disclosure: as a former Edwards supporter in 2004, I note here that Edwards didn't even win his home precinct in NC for Kerry in 2004)

In case anyone wonders why this article only focuses on Sam Nunn and John Edwards, consider that one of the reasons Southerners are so popular as candidates is that they are taught to say Yes, Sir and Yes, Ma'am (remember Edwards yes, ma'am to Gwen Ifill during the 2004 VP debate?). Not sweetie, or honey, or birdie, but ma'am, goes a long way to proving you mean what you say when you want change everyone can believe in to include older women, who are Hillary's real base. My vote against Mrs. Clinton on Feb. 5 was based on not wanting another Clinton to lose Congess again.

Last week, John Edwards announced the launch of his new campaign to dramatically reduce domestic poverty. I hear Obama agreed to support this. There don't seem to be many details on line, but I'll be watching with curiosity to see where this goes.

With Sen. Obama well on his way to this nomination, the talk of VP will begin to warmup. Looking at endorsements and key states and demographics, here are my suggestions for Senator Obama, by best to ahh... there ok:

1. John Edwards, Edwards would extremely help obama with white working class americans.

2. Bill Richardson, Richardson would allow Obama to reach out to the Hispanic voters in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada.

3. Chris Dodd, Dodd would strengthen Obama's white vote

4. Joe Biden, ditto chris dodd

5. Robart Menendez, ( NJ) ditto richardson

6. Hillary Clinton, I can't believe i am saying this, but she would help him with all of the above and women.

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan: John Edwards gave his long-awaited endorsement to Senator Barack Obama, bolstering Obama's efforts to rally the Democratic Party around his candidacy and offering potential help in his attempts to win over working-class white voters in the general election this autumn.

"The Democratic voters in America have made their choice, and so have I," Edwards told a roaring crowd of more than 12,000 in the Van Andel Arena here Wednesday, a day when Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton was trying to capitalize on her big win Tuesday in West Virginia and convince superdelegates and contributors that she still had a chance to capture the Democratic nomination.

"There is one man who knows in his heart that we have to build one America - not two - and that man is Barack Obama," Edwards said.

Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina who dropped his bid for the Democratic nomination in January, said that Obama represented hope and reconciliation to a nation buffeted by war and economic distress.

His endorsement came after victories by Clinton in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and other states with large working-class populations indicated potential weaknesses with voters along racial and class divides - weaknesses that Clinton has tried to exploit to convince superdelegates, contributors and voters in the five remaining contests that she has a better chance to beat Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee.

Edwards could help Obama with that group of voters. A Southerner, he had directed his candidacy at working-class people and had made a pitch to the same white and working-class voters Obama is trying to woo.

"I'll just point out the obvious," Edwards said when he was campaigning in Iowa last year. "In the last - can I do the math, 45, 50 years - what is it, the last two Democrats who actually got elected president? Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton. Both of 'em talk like I do."

His endorsement was as much about Obama as it was a populist cry for universal health care, job creation, better schools and an end to the war in Iraq.

The value of endorsements is often unclear, and Obama was not greatly helped when Caroline Kennedy, Senator Edward Kennedy and other big-name Democrats announced their support this year. But for Wednesday, at least, the endorsement, televised live on cable news and on ABC News, put the focus on Obama and distracted from several television interviews that Clinton had given earlier in the day to make the case for her continuation in the race.

Edwards spent several minutes praising Hillary Clinton, which at first drew loud boos from the largely white crowd, who had filled the arena with no knowledge of the endorsement to come.

He called Clinton a capable senator and a stalwart campaigner who deserved respect for tenacity and service. "We are a strong party because Hillary Clinton is a Democrat, we are a strong country because of her years of public service, and we are going to be a stronger party in November because of her work," he said.

But the drama and excitement of the moment was reserved for Obama, with Edwards's endorsement meant to send a sharp and clear signal that the long race was nearly over.

David Axelrod, Obama's chief strategist, said there were no plans yet for advertisements featuring Edwards or for the two to campaign together.

The endorsement came one day after Obama suffered a 41-point loss to Clinton in West Virginia, where polls gave the strongest indication yet that Obama's race could be a factor in November.

Clinton's team played down the endorsement with a terse statement from its campaign chairman, Terry McAuliffe: "We respect John Edwards," it read. "But as the voters of West Virginia showed last night, this thing is far from over."

The endorsement was sealed Tuesday evening in a telephone call, initiated by Obama. In that call, Edwards told Obama that he would like to endorse him as soon as possible.

Missing from the event was Elizabeth Edwards, Edwards's wife, who has been a passionate proponent of universal health care. The Edwardses were said to be split on the endorsement, with Elizabeth Edwards said to favor Clinton because of her preference for parts of the Clinton health care plan.

Obama, who accepted Edwards's endorsement with praise for the speech and the man, also praised Elizabeth Edwards and her commitment to health care.

As the campaign proceeds, aides to both men said, Edwards is sure to be included on a short list of vice presidential prospects. But Edwards has said he is not interested in a second turn on the ticket.

Edwards has carefully played down his aspirations for an administration role. In January, he said he would not accept a vice presidential spot or cabinet post. "No, absolutely not," he said, shaking his head emphatically. But privately, he told aides that he would consider the vice presidency and favored the position of attorney general.

Clinton spent Wednesday making her case, in a round of network and cable interviews, that she planned to stay in the race through the final primaries on June 3 and that she still believed she could win. She also said, on Fox News, that she was "not entertaining" the idea of angling to be Obama's running mate.

In response to a question from Wolf Blitzer of CNN, Clinton also said that it was "probably right" that she had made a foolish comment when she claimed that more "white Americans" were supporting her than Obama. In making that admission to CNN, she was responding to a remark by one of her supporters, Representative Charles Rangel, that her original "white Americans" comment was "the dumbest thing" she could have said.
