March 4 Healthcare reform on 10/18/09 in Cincinnati!

I propose we have another nationwide march on 10/18/09! Lets coordinate! I myself only had 3 days to organize my event here in Cincinnati on the 13th of September. That was not enough time to do it right, especially with my limited budget. There was no time for word of mouth to spread in three days. We only had about ten marchers at the peak of the march, but we did network with each other & we got media coverage. Channel 19 WXIX & CityBeat newspaper showed up. We were noticed by drivers & got positive feedback from people on the street. I also had the pleasure to meet and talk with Nicholas Hollan who is running for Cincinnati city council. He is a strong supporter of the cause and at this point in time is planning on joining us in this next march.

UPDATE: The permit has been pulled so this is a go! Rain out date is the 25th of October. I want to clearly state the meeting location this time. I was too vague & many may have totally missed us. Everyone meet at the corner of 5th & Walnut by Fountain Square, downtown Cincinnati, on 10/18/09 at 11:30 We'll march the streets from there at 12 again. Depending on turnout & weather we will march for 30 min. to an hour. I will show up early to this event, hopefully by 11, to ensure more organization and preparation. In case you forgot you won the election last Nov. Why are you letting the Radical & Angry Right & the Sissy Blue Dogs (their own name for them not mine) drive the debate? The Radical Right never changes positions. They are the party of No; of hate & anger; of slander & smear. They are the party of victims (mostly of their own actions) & the party of the oppressed (in their own skewed logic). They are the party of I Got Mine, FU. The party of I Got Mine & I want yours & yours & yours & I'm entitled to his & hers even though I stole more than I earned. The party of name calling & labels. The party of Shoot First & Ask Questions Later. The party of secrecy, deception & need to know.

The self-anointed Sissy Blue Dogs . . . I don't know what their problem is. They were happy enough to ride the coattails of success. To agree with campaign rhetoric & align themselves with a winning party. If they weren't so worried about remaining in office through the next election cycle, they could give meaning to their words. If they get voted out of office in the next election cycle, it won't be because they delivered. It will be because they showed themselves to be just another pol, eager to win & not so eager to deliver or offend big campaign contributers.

If the party of Yes We Can waffles on the centerpiece of the 50 state campaign; does not deliver on campaign promises, there will be plenty of disappointment & blame to go around. I don't think it is even reasonable or helpful to adopt any old health care legislation just to get something on the books without offending the Radical & Angry, & BTW Minority Right or Fat & Bloated Insurance companies. Depending on banks to do the right thing with billions in bailout money has not worked out so well. It is just plain unacceptable to expect that insurance companies will behave any better.

When the Party of No takes offense that a duly elected President wishes to address the nation's youngest citizens in public schools where the majority of children attend & where there is the greatest need for role models & team spirit & the Yes We Can attitude, I guess there's no pleasing them. So why bother?

Organize for America the way you organized your campaign. Git 'er done. The real Blue Dogs & Red Dogs & dogs Left, Right & Center that helped get you elected are still watching . . . & waiting.

HAVE YOU FINALLY "HAD IT" WITH ALL OF THE LIES?

Have you finally had it with all of the absolutely unbelievable political maneuverings by the fringe right, the lies, the distortions, the twisting of facts, the outright hatred towards our President simply because a minority (yes it's a minority, remember they lost) of our society are unhappy he is our President?

If so, it's time to do something about it.

Remember, when we were "all one" working hard for the would-be-President, to get him elected because we felt for once we had an intelligent person who was running? Well, we were right. He was the best person running. He is the best President we've had in a long time and we're lucky such an honest, caring individual with vision for our future is in office. Given our world situation, we need him now more than ever. Our future depends on him.

But we are no longer supporting him with the fervor as we did, nor are the same numbers of people supporting him.

Can you believe, his poll numbers are dropping? Yes I understand, post the honeymoon period numbers drop. But to this degree and while he's saving our country, maybe our world? The man that inherited the worst our country has ever seen in terms of war, finance, enviornment and more, who is helping us drag ourselves out of this recession and fight two wars he didn't even want - his poll numbers are dropping? The man who has accomplished more in months than others before him accomplished in lifetimes, his poll numbers are dropping? It's ludicrous. It's like Lincoln's or Roosevelt's poll numbers dropping as they were saving our country. But I must remember, we live in a world where Lincoln was assassinated.

I wear my Obama hat and my wife at times tells me to "take it off Steve, you might anger people" Wow, what a world. I might anger people that I support our President. That is the times of our current times, little by little, it's less acceptable to support our President because the fringe right has made it seem so.

As we fall off in numbers, the extreme fringe right takes advantage by spreading hatred and lies. And there seems to be no limit to how crazy of a story that can be spewed and believed by those who want to believe it and spew it. If I wrote such stories in a screenplay, I'd be told to modify my words because it would be unrealistic that the public would believe such nonsense. But apparently, the public's benchmark for naivety knows no bounds when fueled by hatred.

For instance (one tiny example) think about the outrage (yes outrage) regarding President Obama speaking to school children this Tuesday (as though that's a new idea).

President Obama is the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. He is the mentor of our country the image of our country to the world. He is doing what millions have done before him, speaking to school children. He was elected to lead our country. Get over it fringe right, he gets to lead. You lost.

The cynicism and hatred that drives those who dislike President Obama so much, so as to try to make speaking to school children seem as anything more than what it is, an attempt to inspire and lead our children, is beyond my understanding.

People say, is President Obama's speech to children "political?" Well, he is a politician, he is the President of the United States and yes he will weigh the pros and cons of his every action (as will the world), so I guess he'll weigh the politics of his actions, but that doesn't mean that everything he does, because it's weighed, is a sham or diabolical as some are actually seriously suggesting.

The fringe right who are the strategic architects of the nonsense we hear every day on so called "news" have lost all credibility to argue against anything. Even if they had a legitimate complaint, it's lost in the shuffle of their ludicrous positions and lies.

So, let's start writing, talking, doing - not taking this anymore.

President Obama asked us to turn the page on what happened with Bush, Cheney, et. al. He asked us to believe in the change that we deserved. I can’t believe that all this GOTV, letter writing, phone banking, poll tending, volunteering, home parties, restaurant presentations, cheerleading for a year and a ½ to get him in the winner’s circle is causing a rise in cynical interpretation. We understand that Obama has to be a worldwide respected, flexible American representation. We understand he wants to include all of America. We know deep reform in healthcare is necessary and a given. More than 75% of Americans want healthcare reform that includes the public option, universal healthcare, and single payer, whatever you want to call it. President Obama experienced the downside through his own mother’s dying. He had to know that there would be an all and out war with dysfunctional profit making, no holds bar, hundreds of billions healthcare making system. He knew the ravages in the financial system. In addition, yes, we see those fear mongering, hating, imposing gun packing/toting self-centered paid obstructionists at town hall meetings. So where is the line in the sand? We voted for “real change” not propping the industry, that disrespects our right to human healthcare. Take off the gloves, Fight Obama, Fight! You are head of the United States military. I know you have succumbed to the ills of an economy that has kept you from the movement. I know it isn’t easy and it isn’t fair what you’re going through. I know because my household has been hit hard too.

So I know. This stinks bad. You want to be involved and you want to advocate. Yet, I know this is for sure. It will not get easier unless we stand up and be counted. You see, I’m concerned about our movement. I am not concerned about the Policy we believe in but, I am concerned about the advocacy.

We are losing precious moments. We can say whatever we want about the Tea Party Protestors. However, you cannot say they’re not active and advocating. We are the Champions of advocacy and we must get stronger in our activity. This year’s and next year’s elections are counting on our movement. The People of Michigan are counting on us to deliver the message of a stronger Michigan and confronting the status quo. When you signed up to be an insider, you promised to be the guardians of Progressive Policy for Michigan Residents.

Perhaps its time for a slight shift in the movement and choose action over belief. The movement has altered a bit. It has to be a “Yes We Are” Party. “Yes We Are” active and advocating the issues that make Michigan stronger. “Yes We Are” showing up and showing out on the front lines of Democracy. “Yes We Are” supporting our Legislators in delivering the message or even volunteering in their offices. “Yes We Are” debating the issues and confronting the opposition.

It’s something about our Party that embodies a positive progressive energy. But, only if we stay on our message and actively advocate our vision. Let’s now be a “Yes We Are” movement. Let’s get moving!

One-term President?

The Press has been very reluctant to look beneath the surface of Obama's falling popularity numbers, and once again the spinmeisters on the right step in and dominate. My own support for Obama began to decline before the election, when he flipped on the FISA issue. The fact that John Yoo is free to teach law at Berkley infuriates me. The constant attempt to appease the nihilist Republicans, or give credit to dinosaurs like Chuck Grassley with anything but obstructionism and dishonesty of the highest, most hypocritical order, just turn my stomach. Where's the change I believed in?

In summary, Obama's falling numbers are due to his turning his back on the progressives who elected him, not the fantasy being perpetrated by conservatives and parroted by the uncritical media. He will continue to slide the further he moves to the center. If there is no public option in health care reform he will almost certainly be a one-term president.

On the other hand, the Republicans would have to find someone to run against him. Unless Meghan McCain suddenly wants to run for president I don't see anyone with any credibility, never mind vision, anywhere on the horizon.

I am currently supporting Anthony Weiner for president in 2012. I certainly hope he'll consider running.

NO OPTION, ARE YOU KIDDING ME . . .

Barack Obama won by more than 7.5 million votes over the Republicans . . . How then can he be so wry in stating what he wants this healthcare reform bill? Obama won more votes than any other candidate. He even won Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, New Mexico, Nevada, North Carolina, Virgina, and handsomely, California (except Orange County).

Those of us who field the calls, go out to the malls, set up workshops, pass the word, produce pass outs, e-blast, twitter, and Facebook are interested in knowing why there is so little information regarding the strategy behind Obama’s statement that the “public option is just a sliver of the proposed objectives and may not be in the final bill”?

Obama-ites and individuals in need of healthcare who believe in the change necessary to stop the medical bankruptcies, to provide efficient, effective and standardized health delivery are supporting healthcare reform. Many understand the need for preventive care, which is to lower the costs of pharmaceuticals, doctors, hospital healthcare, which is strangling our weary seniors, and HIV/AIDS, cancer, diabetes and cardiac treatment. I believe we all know someone with a nagging irreversible illnesses requiring medicinal cocktails, patches, pills, shots, and tonics to make it through the day.

With the recent morphing of the Obama Plan, “NO OPTION”, many are raising their eyebrows regarding the “non information” getting to the front lines and this can be quite wearying when you are taking the “shots, the hits, the late night calls, and the hissing” from those who believe you are on some “blind ambition” that Obama can deliver.

So what is all of this hesitation, maneuvering and double speak that we are hearing? Are the Democrats just downright gutless wonders on an issue that affects us all? Bush is not around to kick this time. The media won’t allow us to be oblivious to the disruptive, gun toting and gun strapped, reddened, head-vein popping, bulging eyed, yelling “patriots” at town hall meetings. We understand that change is abominable to some and frightening to most when the government steps in. We know how groups take advantage of the “gaping loopholes” and “financial windfalls” due to poor planning and pencil pushing administrators who can’t think their way out of wet paper bags. Nevertheless, Obama et. al. says they have “studied the plan, they know what they need to shore up the gaps before execution.”

Won’t we, in the meantime, demand that our legislature stop taking money from the corporate entities that stand to lose when healthcare is spread throughout the United States? While legislators fully enjoy superior taxpayer-supported healthcare, paid in full, every year, on time, without denial for prior medical conditions, can’t we be vigilant and exclaim to our elected leadership that they represent us and our families’ future? What is wrong with us that a subject we all require to live each day becomes something not worth fighting for? Is it really something in the water? Will someone explain this to me?

I keep running into people that think it's enough to have voted. I ask them about health care and they respond with "I hope the vote goes well". Or "I'm trying to follow what's going on". It sounds pretty disinfranchised. What about leading what's going on? There's a quote from the audacity of hope, about government being better the more people pay attention which I keep thinking about. I think what's meant is government is better the more those governing KNOW people are paying attention. It's not enough to passively read, or talk about it with those within our normal sphere of safety. It does mean staying fully politically engaged, starting and sustaining political debate, communicating with representatives, and with the media. I've no idea if anyone in either Scotland Nebraska or any other relevant places will read this, but I hope on a regular basis you are saying Yes I Am! as part of Yes We Can! --

North Korea accused South Korea of military provocations on the border

North Korea on Wednesday, April 22, accused South Korea of military provocations on the border between the two countries.

As the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the South Korean military reportedly moved pillar Pokus to the territory of the DPRK.

It's Up to Us

Now that ARRA has passed, and wise minds are trying to tackle the rest of the mess: the message is out - Help is on the way. Take a minute and breathe that in. It's not hopeless anymore, the 8 year treadmill of the downward spiral for the common person in this country is over.

There are two major problems confronting ordinary people now. One is to get the "talking heads" to broadcast positive news - start affirming hope. Heaven knows, it took 'em long enough to see we were drowning out here. Write your local news station and thank them for every positive news story they air. Suggest other places where ordinary people are making a difference -despite- what's going on. As long as the big news story is Bad News, the rest of the world will believe we are never going to recover. I think we can. I think we will.

The second is that ordinary people are going to have to learn to tread water until the help gets to them. For some folks it won't take long, for others it may take a while. Take a look at your life, see how you can make do, see what you can do smarter - get a bucket and start bailing!

Here's an example. When bread hit 2.50 a loaf here, I decided that I was not going to pay extortion prices. Flour hadn't gone up that much, neither had gas - not enough to cover a 3 times price raise in something as basic as bread. So I went searching for the Bread Thrift store. The one in my area had closed! Right across the street from that shuttered business, however, was an Aldi's Grocery store. I had never been in one - it's not a "major" supermarket. I was delighted to find bread at 79 CENTS a loaf. Not only that, but everything else was 30-40% cheaper than the supermarket stores. Milk, eggs, cheese - 1/3rd or more off from what I had been paying.

Here's another example: I found a food co-op called SHARE. It's a food co-op that is for people who volunteer their time in the community. You volunteer 2 hours of your time (doing whatever you want to do in your community) and you can purchase 20 lbs of food for $19 through the co-op. The same basket of food would cost you $50 in the supermarket. I have a family of 3 - we get 6 orders a month and each put 4 hours a piece into the community doing volunteer work. We've done everything from picking up trash to visiting at a retirement home. Other people will help an elderly neighbor with their yardwork or help assemble care packages for our troops overseas. No one organizes these efforts - the co-op members each look for things that need doing and jump in and do them.

And yet one more example: I sold both of my cars in 2004. Gas had hit $1.89 a gallon and I just couldn't afford the expense of all that goes in to owning 2 cars. It was an experiment to be sure - could we survive on mass-transit, an occasional taxi fare and a once in a while car rental? If not, we could always buy another car, so we put the money from the car sales in the bank and gave it a try.

Once we wrapped our heads around it taking longer to get places - it turned out not to be so bad. We adjusted our schedules and learned to cope. As a consequence, when gas got to $4.00 a gallon - our cost of getting to work and other places stayed nearly the same. This was a lucky experiment and not one everyone nation-wide can do it. But for those who can - give it a try. Park your car and figure out other ways to get around. In 3 months you'll be surprised at how much extra you have in your budget (and if you can walk to places like the gorcery store - how much better you feel). If you have plenty and this "extra" is just extra find someone who is in need and lend them a hand.

So cut the budget, find someone else worse off than you to help, find something that needs doing in your community and do it - take the power and use it to make your world a better place.

The bottom line is "It's up to us".

Our President would need all the help from us. Instead of asking lets start by doing something to make the lives of others better. Even simple things can make a world of difference to another. The problems we have are too great and time is too short.

Chanting YES WE CAN and CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN only creates noise but applied into care driven action becomes divine.

Go out there and reach out to someone, do anything to make their lives better and you shall have learned the true meaning of that simple world.

The result will be more people doing what you did for them.

Organizing for America - Yes We Can (Change our Destiny)

My pro-bono organization can help millions want to work tirelessly for Organizing America. Pre inaugural, when I would say that, it was hard to distinguish my altruism from people who wanted to glom on to the presidency for self-aggrandizing. Distancing myself from them took effort. Now that the inaugural is over I hope my mission to help America will be more noticed.

Here’s background and what my pro-bono organization can do to help:

When I was in Grant Park and saw all the “Yes We Did” signs, I was concerned that the passion of involvement that existed during the election would fade to something much less post inaugural, when our world needs us.

I was so committed to not allowing that to happen, that I stepped down as CEO of my small, but successful family owned video production company in Chicago and created a pro-bono organization called "Yes We Can (Change our Destiny).”

Its simple mission is to “keep the passion of civic involvement alive.” I knew the administration would create structure for our involvement. But the President will be extremely distracted and will need us to proactively and independently work for change.

But we as human beings need rallying cries and inspiration to move us emotionally to want to get off our couch and work for our world.

My entire life I’ve created effective video that made my clients rich. I figure it’s about time I use my talents to help America. When I released our first 5-minute video days prior to the inaugural it became the #1 non-profit video on YouTube, 125,000 views in a couple of days, inspiring so many to keep the movement going. It was played at inaugural balls, covered by ABC, NBC and the papers. But it can inspire millions of people if the video was simply out there in a bigger way (such as on Organizing America’s website, on USAService.org. etc.).

I give this video (broadcast quality HD master tapes), free, to your organization, to the world, just for the asking. As President Obama said, we can “put our hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.” In other words, “Yes We Can (Change our Destiny).”

Ending Marijuana Prohibition

Marijuana has been shown to be much safer than legal substances such as alcohol and cigarettes. It was originally made illegal decades ago in an effort to discriminate against minorities such as African-Americans and Mexican laborers. President-elect Obama, why continue to enforce a drug law which was originally created solely to target minorities? I advise everyone to do your own research on the subject, one may be surprised that many Americans' beliefs about Marijuana are unfounded and more often than not, outright propagandist lies made popular in the thirties and forties. The only reason this relatively harmless plant is still illegal is because most politicians do not have the guts to stand up for the thousands of Americans incarcerated simply for posessing marijuana.

I also say that we stop calling it a "war" on drugs, because it is not, it is a constant assault on otherwise law abiding American citizens, who choose to use marijuana just like mankind has for thousands of years. In 2004 President-Elect Obama supported decriminalization of marijuana, only to withdraw support later on. On the subject of outright legalization, Mr. Obama has claimed to be against it. If you are familiar with change.gov, you know that it is an official website set up by the transition team which had a section that allowed Americans to ask questions, the number one question was concerning marijuana legalization. What does this tell you? Americans are hungry for the change that Mr. Obama has promised, and want it in the form of marijuana legalization. This is shocking, considering the economic meltdown, the housing crisis, Iraq, and Afghanistan. GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!

As part of the inaguration contest, this is what I wrote:

This inauguration means to me that change is possible especially if 40 years ago blacks were being hosed down or bitten by dogs because of marching for their rights and then 40 years later a half black man can run and win the Presidency of the United States. This inauguration means to me that I as a single black mom, U.S. Naval Veteran can start her own Community Development Corp, creating products, jobs, services and business opportunities internationally. Doing my part for change. To also teach my son the same, so when he is older he knows what to do. This inauguration means to me that we have a President who understands the people. Who understands we the people, for the people, by the people. Its about the people, its a we thing. Yes we can.

I went on to write:

I remember being stationed in Sicily Italy in the early 90s. I went on vacation to a resort in Sicily that overlooked the Med Sea. I was awakened by what sounded like thunder in the morning but it wasn't raining. I just layed by down; This happened two mornings in a row. My co-worker who also went on the trip heard it from her room, and asked that morning, did I hear the lion roaring. I said, What? The lion roaring!? There was a zoo next to the resort down the street. That roar rolled out across the waters and I believe that is what the life, the voice of God has done through President Elect Obama to wake us up. But it doesn't have to stop there, we all have a roar within us that need to come out that can wake up ourselves and others.

Yes we can.

THE AUTO INDUSTRY, A FEW OF MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES (INDUSTRIAL GREED):

This post is a brief overview of the Automotive Industry which describes some of the fundamental problems that are rarely spoken of. In addition, you will learn of a few of my personal experiences growing up, an environment where I was surrounded by the industry; you will learn of a few perspectives that are shocking and that even only a few within the industry know of. At the end of the post, you will better understand what happened to American Manufacturing and where it stands.

The Auto Industry is at the heart of all of American Manufacturing. It is an industry that laid the groundwork for many other types of industries to follow, deemed at one point in history to be the highest of successes. But now, it sheds light on what can become warning signs for other businesses that mistakenly try to imitate it.

This months hot topic is whether to bailout/rescue the regressing American Auto Industry. The original owners and their successors abandoned that industry long ago. The auto industry was ravaged and plundered by the wealthiest Americans a half century ago and has been in decline ever since. Shortsighted greed from one generation to the next has been the culprit. Since autos were first mass-produced and America monopolized the world, it was only natural that the American percentage/share of the market would eventually be reduced. However, total growth was enormous and total size of the market continues to grow even through today. Therefore, American growth of exports should have continued to grow, but does not significantly due to pillage and poorly planted roots. In simpler terms, we originally owned the entire pie. The pie was split up. Since the entire pie has grown dramatically, our piece should have grown too. However, the Big 4, 3, 2, … have been loosing market dominance and lead since the end of World War Two. Here we are years later in crisis, and the real question remains whether or not to rescue the real victims of the auto industry, the workers. People were not retrained or re-educated; most were never afforded real education's to start. People are now in despair and hopelessness. From my vantage point now living in Colorado for the last two decades, I have seen the high tech industry follow the auto industry, but at a learned and accelerated rate. Other industries are also copying the auto industry and are laying similar foundations also headed for disaster. Going back to a brief history, the misguided roots show how the decay started and why it spread.

Although I did not grow-up during the inception of the Auto Industry, its roots surrounded me. I spoke with a few who were there in the earliest days, and spoke with many who were of the following generation. I absorbed its history by studying it while attending school in Motown (Motor Town), by natural osmosis, and in my earliest career dealing with the car makers.

Growing up as a kid I lived less than a mile from Henry Ford's first moving assembly line factory, with GM’s World Headquarters’ just three miles away, and with Chryslers World Headquarters at the end of our street. The first Ford plant (in Highland Park, a city now surrounded by Detroit) and the first of GM's plants were built on the importation of the next generation of former black slaves and white share crop workers from the south (whites similar to former slaves whose white necks were red from working in the sunny fields, hence the mean spirited term 'Redneck'). The joke that Henry Ford must have laughed at and that went around town was "each worker would get paid enough to buy a Ford" (Of course using infamous 'Ford Credit' which was a primary direct withdrawal from their pay checks.) Henry manipulated a built-in guaranteed customer base and tapped double profits, being profits on the cars and the profitable bonded interest. Those were scams that he copied from sharecropping. The remains of their wages were so low that they had to live in shacks; but after all Henry felt, they came from shacks near the fields in the south. So much bigotry and repeated methods from sharecrop economic slavery. Instead of updating and rebuilding the original plants and without regard for the people who were the workers, the emerging auto giants left to go further to the suburbs.

So, as they moved and grew they imported shipload after shipload of immigrant economic slaves from Poland (to Hamtramck, MI) and more economic slaves from the Middle East (to Dearborn, MI). There were other minorities imported as well, also imported for economic servitude to supporting industries such as mining, iron works, steel fabrication, glass works, textile, …. Astonishing how easily the game of 'divide and conquer' worked upon the variety of minorities; a game of keeping the workers pitted against each other using race and ethnicity; all to hold back the power of the people from truly uniting. WW2 caused the Automakers not only to retool but also to reevaluate their future directions.

Soon, after the victory of WW2, came the Auto Giants grand visions for economically conquering the world via expansion outside the U.S. They quietly boasted that that would leave mainly world headquarters executives, designers, and engineers in the U.S. with the prestigious white-collar jobs. It was felt then (and these are not my bigoted opinions, not from me, yikes) that after all even 'the weaker sex' could do factory labor jobs as seen during WW2 (i.e. Rosie the Riveter). So why not have the 'stupid foreign workers' do the labor outside the U.S. What also gave way to the idea that manufacturing could succeed outside the U.S. was Mexico; since Mexican workers were also imported, but only temporarily during WW2. (By the way, the temporary Mexican workers were never fully paid back as promised during WW2.) A tremendous wave of pride about white-collar jobs became very popular in Detroit and in other automotive communities during the 50's. That vision sat poised on the back burner, but a pre-planted seed was already in place, which was Canada (Windsor) just across the Detroit River.

Canada was a much-desired orchestrated precedence for the automakers; it set the stage for grace given by the government as an easily set up protocol for off-shoring jobs. Soon after, the automakers made a migration south to other states, then further south to Mexico, and finally overseas and on to economic slavery in China.

Today we see the results of the destructive path the industry has taken. Layoffs, instead of being temporary situations reserved for pauses during new model changeovers, eventually became the mark of permanent labor plant closures. Obvious abandonment of people soon became the name of the automakers game. Along the swathed trail are - Highland Park, Detroit, Pontiac, Flint, Marquette, Gary Indiana, Pittsburgh, Toledo, Cleveland, …, which became known in the early 80’s as 'The Rust Bowl’. Sort of a rape, pillage, and burn mentality, which continues to today.

Amazing how well the reasoning of "that's the way it's always been" persists and grows from one generation to the next. Excuse after excuse gave temporary reasoning to incremental geographic movements for global conquer. Temporary excuses ranged from the need to originally amass large workforces, to the hindrance of union pressures, to American workers are lazy, to 'over' government regulation, to …, all straw obstacles as to why the auto industry needed to move as it did.

No! Greed is not good. We see how those at the top of the industry have each come in, grabbed with their greed, and left. Now today, we see how greed has caused "what once was, no longer is". So in short, now we see the results of greed, poorly planted roots, and disregard, taking its toll on America. Equally, is the toll on the myriad of unrelated businesses, old and new, that have adopted the auto industries infectious habits of having little to no regard for individual people that make up the American workforce. People.

While being raised in the center of Detroit, I experienced many situations involving the Auto Industry; the following although early was not my earliest, and is an actual example.

Around 1963, when I was 11 years old, I remember George Romney visiting our house to exchange political favors. Our 23-room house was a rundown relic of a past era, but it cleaned up well as a phony front for wealth and pretentious power. I remember we kids had to pretend that we were Christian Protestants for the visiting Governor (former Chairman of AMC) who was doing his Christian Mormon tradition of visiting the homes of his new legislators. How ostentatious they both were with fraudulent humility of how they rose from their humble beginnings. But more to the point, I remember Romney sitting at our dinning room table and saying "The Big Four Automakers don't have to worry about giving the Unions what they want, as long as the benefits will not be due for decades. By that time the labor plants will be outside the U.S." That shocked my brother Jimmy and I, as we listened playing in the sunroom just off the dinning room. Later we were once again physically punished (beaten-up), this time for listening to adult talk. Jimmy a year older than I, and intellectually gifted, soon became a Page at the State Capital. The accounts he returned with were shocking as well. Growing up as we did would make your head spin and open your eyes to disgust. We continued living in those surroundings until we grew out of our teens. Then we moved on to make our own adult lives, creating better environments much different from what we were born and raised in.

Recalling back to my teens, I realized back then the Detroit riots were not only about race, but was also about economic oppression. It was the minorities who were oppressed the worst, most especially African-Americans. Bad however you measure it is bad. (For a better understanding of the decline of Detroit and to better understand the riots, take a look at my other post: “DETROIT RIOTS OF 1967, A RECOLLECTION OF THE TRUTH.” You will also better understand how very close we came to seeing a nationwide repeat of the riots in the coming Spring of 2009.)

Unions, workers, man-hours, laborers, …, are not people, they are burdens to be minimized and eliminated. While watching Lee Iacocca being interviewed on Charley Rose last year, I noticed Iacocca admit that he new all the way back during negotiations with the unions, in the early 80’s, that Chrysler would never have to pay off in full on long term commitments to the unions. As Iacocca danced around the issue he said "now the unions will have to face reality". And, as Rose went on to discuss it more, Iacocca was getting more uncomfortable, and eventually managed to change the subject away from discussing past union negotiations. Iacocca was a bit slicker than George Romney was, since Iacocca was on national TV. It made me ashamed that Chrysler World Headquarters was at the end of our street when I was a kid. And, that as a young adult I had so proudly in my early career returned while working for a couple of electronics companies to Chrysler's World Headquarters R&D operations. I thought it an honor to have paid Iacocca's in-house barbershop to cut my hair, even his same barber. Some honor.

Following Chrysler, I moved up to deal with GM, and was puzzled. I listened to upper executives at GM complain that they constantly had to bribe Mexican government officials and border guards for GM plants. I guess they also assumed I already new and accepted that the plants in the late 70's had already begun their exodus to Mexico and other countries. I have always looked at bribery as disgusting and wrong, it was not for me or those who I dealt with, that's among the many good things that a mentor named Jack Bazzy taught me as a young kid. By becoming acquainted with other mentors as an adult, I learned to seek out highly reputable employers and quality knowledgeable friends. I learned how to educate myself, and moved up very high in the scientific and technical industries, all of which I enjoyed.

Although I grew up in Highland Park / Detroit, that was not anywhere near my top focus in choosing Obama. But, it is a simple history for me to recall, amazing how many more details I can give, but the main points have been brought forward. In addition, from being a mutt of sorts myself, to being a self made man, be that what it may, I have no illusions of being great. What I do mean here is that I quickly recognize many of Obama's unique insights, although mine are different but a bit similar in nature. Like many Obama supporters, I have personal experiences on most issues Obama has raised. So, above is just one of many examples that I can personally give.

How this movement began:

53 year old Steven Miles Sulkin, Chicago producer and founder of the "Yes We Can (Change our Destiny) Project," was so encouraged by the phenomenon of the 10’s of millions of people who were inspired by President Elect Obama to bring about change to our world, that he has put aside nearly all of his responsibilities and has vowed to devote himself to help keep that potent force alive. He believes our world needs us now more then ever, to, as the famous quote says, "ask not what our country can do for us…"

The group's mission statement was inspired by what President Elect Obama said on November 4th at Grant Park:

We have an opportunity to put our hands “on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope for a better day.”

Project #1: Create a video that begins to bend the arc of our immediate future by inspiring millions to understand that if they act together as a group to help our world, that “Yes We Can (Change our Destiny).”

Spurred on by supporters and friends, self-funded with money he doesn't have and shouldn't have spent, Steven brought in 40 of the nation's top video artists, musicians and "philosophical confidants" and on December 7th at The Chicago Recording Company, created in a marathon 17 hour session, the "Yes We Can (Change our Destiny)" video.

The film is so compelling that it is already becoming a visual and musical rallying cry for change post the election, much as Will.I.Am's video inspired a nation to bring about change before the election.

Steven is confident that this video along with other events in Washington D.C. during the inaugural will re-ignite the 4 million people coming to D.C., and that in turn will re-engage the country and the world to bring about real change our world so desperately needs.

Steven will be attending the inaugural in Washington D.C. He wants no fame or fortune. He just wants to make an impact on this world and feels that this project is his calling; that his entire life has been on a path for this moment.

Eureka Springs Change Is Coming House Meeting

Nine local residents met December 13 to plan how we can connect local change efforts with those at regional and national levels and the Obama administration.

We introduced ourselves and expressed our priorities for change:

Sustainable economy
Green jobs
Clean energy
Protecting the enfironment

We discussed efforts already taking place and possible projects we could do before Inauguration day:

Planet Home - working to fight global warming
Eureka Springs Outdoor Alliance - trail building
Green jobs
Time bank
Local school service project as a venue for education
Food security, community garden, canning center
Support public policy for solar energy for historic buildings

We decided to sponsor a public forum on Community Sustainability. The idea is to help educate, organize and coordinate local efforts to protect the economy and environment. A speaker will present on green jobs followed by open time where visitors can visit with representatives of local groups. Arrange a meeting with the mayor to:

Events for change

Greetings all and thank you for reading this blog. At this time we are creating an event we hope many will come to participate in. We have been fortunate enough to secure a facility for 150 people to have seats but we can squeeze a few extra into the space if needed. We have noticed many of the small gatherings can facilitate perhaps 20 persons, and they have been turning people away. Now we have the space for meaningful numbers, so if you are in the Portland area, then come on and sign up for the event.

As our soon to be President said, we have the person in the White House to facilitate change, but we still need the people to make it happen. He cannot do it himself, and we all know how Congress and the Senate are rife with special interests and agendas for the status quo. Change HAS to come from US. We have to be prepared to voice our desire for change from the grass roots level. We HAVE to participate in this change, instead of leaving it for others to do for us. We have to be ready to let the career politicians who would stand for the ststus quo, know that we will not stand for obstruction to the plan we are developing here in the trenches of our neighborhoods.

I hope you take a moment to read this blog to understand a very important project I’m working on that I need everyone’s help with.

Here’s some background…

When I left Grant Park after President Elect Obama’s victory, I was carrying with me a “victory” song that I wrote (I’m a video producer, head of a family owned production company based in Chicago and am a pianist / professional musician).

But as I walked up Michigan Avenue on the way back to the Obama Headquarters hotel at the Hyatt, the “Yes We Did” signs caused me concern, as I’m sure it caused many people concern. Because we know all too well that the real journey still lies before us. And that if we don’t inspire the electorate again, we cannot change our world (and our world I fear is on a precipice in great need of our collective help).

So I put away my victory song, as I did not want to infer to anyone that our mission was somehow complete.

Over the next few weeks I became even more deeply concerned that all the potential energy that was harnessed by Mr. Obama would be lost forever and most of it never rekindled.

I’m a 53 year-old cancer survivor and father of four beautiful children. My wife and I endured the loss of eight babies in utero as we tried to make our family. My father lived through the holocaust in WWII in Poland. I give you these examples to tell you that I know something about both joy and suffering. But I also know that if people band together, that we can, through hope mixed with hard work and powered by inspiration, dig our way out of even the worst circumstances.

So I vowed to do my part for our country and our world by re-writing my “victory” song so as to turn it into a forward looking piece entitled

“Yes We Can (Change our Destiny)”

I got together 30 of the country’s best musicians, arrangers, director’s of photography, lighting designers, engineers and more, and on December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day (interestingly enough) spent 17 straight grueling hours laying down the music tracks and filming the production at CRC (Chicago Recording Company). At 5am, we all rolled out of there tired, but inspired.

What came out of that session surprised even me. It was as though (and I don’t mean to sound too “out there”) I was a participant in my own writing, as though inspiration was writing for me. For example, I do not typically write gospel inspired music, it is not my background. But a Pop / Gospel inspirational piece poured out of me. It’s possibly the best work I’ve ever done. I’ve sent the audio tracks to thousands who were immediately inspired beyond words. It still inspires me each time I listen to it (and typically I can't even look at whatever I created for about a year)! It’s amazingly uplifting and I believe it has the potential of inspiring millions, causing them to understand that we must all help our society by staying passionately involved. Will.i.am inspired millions of people to vote. He's a famous guy and that helped his cause. I'm not a famous guy. I'm just a guy, but I want to inspire millions of people to do something even more difficult, to keep their passion alive over the long term.

In closing, I would like to say that I’m sure there are still 10’s of thousands, if not 100’s of thousands of people who care and are working hard for the common good of man. But I fear only a small percentage of the involvement of what we saw prior to the election is currently taking place.

President Elect Barack Obama is relying on all of us to come out of the woodwork again. I suspect that a "what you can do for your country" type speech is what the President elect will give on January 20th. I want to help in my small way by getting this song out there to inspire us to ask not what our country can do for us, but what we can do for our country (and our world) as the President I grew up with, when I was just five years old, so many years ago, inspired me to realize. 'Hope' springs anew for Washington University grad students

UNIVERSITY CITY — Georgia O'Keeffe found inspiration in the light and shapes of New Mexico.

Mary Cassatt found hers in mothers and children.

Maya Escobar and Carianne Noga, two graduate students at Washington University's Sam Fox School of Art and Design, found inspiration for their latest project from the long lines on Election Day at a Ben and Jerry's ice cream shop in the Loop.

There, on the sidewalk outside the shop, which was giving away scoops of ice cream to voters, the two women felt excitement and hope among voters. They said they found that same feeling across the street in the long line of voters waiting to vote at the Loop polling place.

"We wanted to continue that moment and not let it peak out," Noga said.

Before the polls closed, they had begun to create their "I hope…" project.

They first staked out a site: outside the University City Post Office at 561 Kingsland Avenue.

They then provided people with bright red tags and paint markers for them to write down their hopes for a better future.

The tags then are affixed to a permanent lattice wood sculpture already on site outside the Post Office.

"As difficult as it can be sometimes to voice our wishes and dreams, it can be strengthening," the artists say in explaining their mission. "We can be reminded of the rest of the world outside our own immediate concerns. In this period of great change and near infinite possibilities, it is time for us to voice our hopes."

While the project is for all people, Escobar said it holds special meaning for young people.

"This is our moment to make a difference for our communities," Escobar said. "We need to be aware — of our national situation, of the economy."

Many of the hopes expressed — most recorded anonymously — so far are noble and universal: "I hope for world peace" and "My hope is that hate is no longer."

Some of the hopes are personal. "I hope to not fear death," wrote one.

Others have a distinctly political bent: "I hope we get out of Iraq and don't go to war with Iran." And some are just fun, like the person hoping for "chocolate cake for dessert ..."

A University City police officer named Hope — Reginald Hope — shared with them his own hope: for safety for police officers. A fellow officer was killed while on duty near the Loop last month.

Washington University Chancellor Mark Wrighton gave his hope and "wishes for better health and greater prosperity for all."

The artists also are encouraging people to submit their hopes online at togetherwehope.com.

Barack Obama's election as the 44th President has inspired me like no leader that has come before him.

In 1961 - when I was 6 years old - my family took me on a tour of the White House. I ran down a hallway (away from the tour) and peered through a crack in a folding screen that was set up to block a doorway. President John F. Kennedy was seated on a couch in a majestic, sun-filled room reading a newspaper.

That vision and feeling of awe has been with me since that day. I can still close my eyes 47 years later and see that scene. I have that same feeling when I see President-elect Obama.

It's been a long time coming, and a change is gonna come! We must, as Americans, continue to pray for this great nation, and our current President as well as President Elect Barack Obama and his family. We must remember to continue doing our part in making and keeping this country a great nation.

The voters stated profoundly that we, as Americans, will no longer stand for the same old same old. We have a voice in our vote and we will stand together to bring about a change in this Nation. Therefore, if there are "repeat offenders" in your legislative, senate, or congressional seats, VOTE THEM OUT! We will not get anywhere with the same people in office. We hear it everyday...if you think you're going to get a different outcome doing the same thing with the same people in control, you're fooling yourself, wasting your time, and remaining stagnant.

It's time to stir the waters, take a leap of faith, and exercise that FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD! Get involved! Your little bit counts - even if it's just helping to feed a neighbor's child; making sure your neighbors are safe and warm; helping the children in your neighborhood complete their homework; lending a hand to the senior citizen in your community; etc. At least participatie and not stand idly by watching things get worse - that is no longer an option.

This crisis is real and WE BELIEVE that YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! YES WE CAN!

I have to admit, last June I had not jumped on full-fledge and my only blog was entitled, "Sen. Obama, please don't soften her" in ref. to Michelle. I started leaning way over when Edwards, Richardson and then my guy Gore made their endorsements. But I was still one of those hard nuts to crack. Mr. Biden on board really brought me over the fence but still just out of curiosity I was looking to see who Sen. McCain would announce (keeping my options) just felt we really should trust in Judgment and really, other than running a strong well disciplined campaign, what do you have to go on other than the VP choice?

Needless to say Sen. Obama hit the home run and Sen. McCain hit a foal ball at best.

So I got aboard late, but better late then never.

That's right. Barack Obama, the newly elected President of the United States, didn't win last night.

WE won last night. All of the people who wanted their voices to be heard won last night. I won last night. My children won last night. Millions of people....millions....won last night. Yes...we did.

I said nearly 2 years ago that this man would be our next President, and no one believed me. Tyler doubted me, my parents laughed at me, my sister said, "Are you sure?" with that look of doubt in her eyes. Yes. I was. I never doubted that the American people would open their eyes and see the change that could come. I knew that this man with the funny name and the colored skin would be a great figure in American history. Yes we can.

I didn't vote for Obama because he was going to be written into history. I didn't vote for Obama because he is bi-racial. I didn't vote for Obama because he's young, or because he has the ability to bring the ages together. I voted for Obama because I truly and geniunely believe deep down in my heart that he can change America. I believe in a better world for my children, for your children, for us. Yes we can.

Watching Grant Park in Chicago last night, with 125,000 people jammed pack into the confines and spilling over into the parking lots....I had goosebumps. Through tearful eyes I watched the joy on people's faces, I watched red states turn blue, I watched history. I was a part of history. I tear up as I think about it now. Obama's speech was eloquent and moving, and I believe in every single word that he said. Yes we can.

The road ahead will be a rough one, and I know that I won't agree with everything he will say and everything that he will do - but I will support him just as he will support us as families, and as workers. WE won last night. Don't you understand? We were heard! We raised up above everything saying that we couldn't, and we prevailed. WE DID IT. We are validated. Our voices are not hushed now, we have 4 (I hope 8) more years of being heard. Yes we can.

Barack Obama didn't win last night. We won. We are validated. He'll keep speaking for us, and I'll keep being a proud American. I'm proud to be a part of history, and I'm proud that all of the time and effort I spent talking to people about this great man meant something more than I could ever describe.

I'll shake his hand again, and he'll look me in the eye. I can't wait for that day.

January 20, 2009 will be even more monumental than last night. President Obama. I like that. President Obama.

You have brought me to higher heights than I have soared to in YEARS.

You have inspired me to believe in not only yourself, but all of us as well.

YES, WE CAN!!I have been such a cynical person. I realized that tonight as Barack Obama-President Obama, was giving his FIRST PRESIDENTIAL SPEECH!!!! What he said tonight made me realize how I need to do more. It is not over. It is just the beginning. I have supported Obama since he announced his candidacy. I heard about him, I read his books; I examined his Senate voting records. I "VETTED" him. And even though I voted for him in the primaries, encouraged (and harassed) my friends to vote for him, tortured my children and husband with the news for close to 2 years, bothered people in Pennsylvania for a few nights, wore an Obama-mama shirt every weekend to my daughter's volleyball games, stuck bumper stickers all over the back of my car, (even after I have said for years people that did that were attention-seeking), fought with my conservative parents multiple times, begged my conservative brother, schemed with my little Democratic sister & aunt (on how to convert them), I donated a what little bit of money I didn't really have to his campaign every month, BUT tonight-I realized that I had totally prepared myself for Obama to lose. I was ready for a fight. I was remembering 2000. I was remembering 2004. I was expecting problems, and I was waiting for something to happen. I was so sure something bad was going to happen. I have to say, I stayed up last night to see the Dixville Notch election. When he won there, when they have not voted for a Democrat since H. Humphreys, I seriously saw that as a sign. When they showed Ohio and Pennsylvania, I felt like maybe was starting to happen. And then something did happen - and it wasn't bad. I slopped some dinner on the table for the kids (4) and then I glued myself to CNN. Somewhere in between the kids tattling on each other, finding the Halloween candy that I JUST hid, taking baths, signing homework, and the 52 minute lecture from my Dad about why we are in the War in Iraq, and that we need a balance of power in Washington, D.C., Barack Obama became President of the United States. Barack Obama won. It happened so fast. When I logged onto CNN live, and I saw Jesse Jackson crying, and I saw the enormity of the crowd at Grant Park, I knew. I ran back to CNN, and un-paused (I love TIVO!!!) CNN, John McCain came out & conceded. And I'm going to pull a Michelle Obama here- "For the first time in (this election), I have been proud of Arizona." John McCain was truly a gracious man, and proved himself to be a servant of his country. His concession speech could not have been better. He truly vindicated himself with that speech. I realized when I saw President Obama come out with his family, it was real. It was really happening. No "recount", no Supreme Court. It was here, and it was real. I can't remember a time in my life, besides the days my children were born, that I have been so moved and so inspired by something. I realized that this election has changed me, and there was no way to hide behind my cynicism anymore. I was so happy for my children, that they would be able to grow up in a country with so much HOPE. But with President Obama's words of hope, and inspiration about what we need to do, to come together, to serve our country, I knew that this movement isn't over. There's more to do. This is just the beginning of CHANGE. Our country spoke tonight, and it spoke LOUD!!!We are all really good at something. I think after tonight, if everyone thinks about it, what they think is especially important to them and their lives, (education, the environment, healthcare, the economy, jobs, the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan) if you dedicate yourself to that cause in the best way that you know how - then our country will be better off, a little bit, everyday. If we keep moving toward our goals, together, and never forget what we did in this election, we can CHANGE THIS COUNTRY. I think tonight is the first night that I have really believed that.

Some thoughts on Election Night

I'm taking a break from making calls (over 100 made tonight & counting!) to reflect on some of the memories I've collected while working for Barack's Campaign for Change. I'm thinking about the many people I've met and the voices I've heard.

The first time I, went canvassing for Barack the somewhat disheartening day ended on a high note. After knocking on 10 pages worth of doors in an economically depressed area of Virginia Beach, and being met with hostility, suspicion, indifference, and many empty homes, my partner and I were greeted by an entire extended family who came outside to thank us for the work we were doing to change the world.

The man on our list was a young African American soldier who was visiting his parents' home with his wife and two daughters. He came to the door in a Barack T-shirt and stepped outside to speak to us; his mother, father, uncle, wife and two daughters followed. As he updated his address (he had recently been transferred to Northern Virginia) and signed up to volunteer, his father and wife spoke about the campaign and the hope they felt. His pre-teen daughter said she wanted to vote too. As three generations of this family stood around us, I noticed that we were all smiling ear to ear, just beaming at each other. "It's a new day!", his father said as we took turns shaking hands round the circle and said goodbye.

The first night I made calls to voters in my state, after 25 calls that yielded little but wrong numbers and one screaming McCain supporter, I happened on a 93 year old African American woman who had voted early, she said, "because of my age". She wanted to talk and her quavering voice conveyed the emotion she felt. "I have waited so long for this, for this day! I have waited so long to see this happen, wouldn't nothing keep me away."

Tonight, as I made calls to voters in Virginia and Nevada, a 73 year old Caucasian woman stopped me mid-sentence to say "Don't you worry, I voted this morning and I voted for Obama!".

As I canvassed on Sunday, a young Caucasian man with sandy-colored hair in cornrows, a naked torso covered in what looked like home-made tattoos, and a big smile asked for an Obama lawn sign and poster. As he meticulously taped the sign to his mailbox he explained that he couldn't vote, but he wanted to help get the word out. "Barack's gonna change everything up! He's gonna change this world. " (Apparently, as an ex-convict, he had lost his right to vote.)

This is the first time I have felt truly connected to the political process and the first time I have become actively involved beyond voting and giving a small donation. I'm a single mother of a young son and a teacher; my time and my budget are tight. Yet, somehow I managed to scrape up extra time and extra money for Barack Obama's campaign. I have waited so long for this and together we all will change everything up. For the first time I unabashedly believe--we can change this world.

We hear so much from the McCain supporters about Americans who CAN'T rise above old racist instincts, who CAN'T have the courage to pursue real change but choose to retain the status quo, who CAN'T believe in hope when they have lost so much. I know Americans and I know WE CAN. My 95 year old Mother likens listening to the inspiration from Senator Obamas speeches to listening to FDR on the radio and just knowing inside that He would get us out of the mess we were in. Just instinctively trusting him.

Barack Obama is a self described Christian, a child of God. not a pharisee (Republican?) who prays and preaches loudly for attention while letting the poor go hungry and the sick die at their feet. I can't find anything Christlike in the Republican platform. Jesus was all inclusive, He came to show us all the way to God. With the Republicans, there is only room for perfect people..no lesbians..no gays..no disabled...no elderly..no poor ..no addicts...nope- no sinners allowed. Who do they think they are kidding? We are all sinners , and anything good in us comes from God. Jesus hates sin and loves the sinner. Republicans seem to wallow in the sins of greed and self-righteousness and pride and lying and hate a great many people. It seems to me that when this election is over the Rebublican party needs to be rebuilt from the ground up with people who believe in following their own self proclaimed principles.

I am so very hopeful that on Nov 4th 2008, Americans will begin the long road back to recovery of the country that God has given us and that we love so much. God bless you Senator Obama and your family and may you always look to Him for help when you need it most. Thank You for giving us HOPE.

I have always voted, but I’ve never taken action for a cause or candidate I believed in. I’ve been a passive participant in my own democracy. I have never donated money to a political campaign and I always felt too shy to talk to friends about politics. Until now. This country needs change desperately and I have more faith in Barack Obama than I have ever had in a political candidate. Not only do I believe in the change he can effect, but he’s also made me believe in the change I can effect. It’s not a new concept, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”, but he’s inspired in me that’s it actually possible. Not only is it possible, it’s our duty. I feel blessed to have political freedom and access to information that has led me to supporting Barack Obama as president. I’ve also found the courage to talk to friends and family about becoming involved, whether it’s financially, volunteering, or simply knowing the issues and where the candidates stand on them. And while the $75 I raised on my personal fundraising page for Barack Obama is small, it is also great in that it shows my growth as someone who speaks up and out and asks other people to help effect change. Because Barack Obama has shown me, not only “Yes We Can”, but also, “Yes, I Can!” For Us.

Barack Obama’s phenomenal campaign which has been run completely on his faith in himself, his loved ones, and our faith in him truly hit home with me last night while watching his 30 minute “infomercial”.

You see, I have been an avid supporter of Senator Barack Obama’s since the summer of 2007. And I am SO grateful that I became a supporter. But I did not realize how my contributions with my time, my money, and my efforts to engage my family, friends, and loved ones, even in simple discussions about his campaign, have contributed to Senator Barack Obama being in the current position that he is right now to even air that informercial and have contributed to my understanding of my own power as an individual.

And it hit me that it truly only ever takes just one. It takes just one individual to stand, one individual to go against the grain, to question the status quo…..JUST ONE PERSON. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE POWER INHERENT IN WHAT I JUST WROTE? JUST ONE PERSON.

Knowing, not just saying, but knowing and truly believing that it only takes JUST ONE PERSON to change the world – that concept is mind-blowing.

Imagine if Barack Obama had not decided to run for President because the odds were so highly stacked against him?

Imagine if Michelle Obama had decided to not endorse her husband and nurture his dream and instead discard it some crazy concept?

Imagine if that one individual who first decided to support Barack Obama’s campaign and not to spread his/her endorsement to those around him/her?

Imagine if that one individual did not engage another individual, who then engaged another individual, and so on and so forth…which has now created this movement that has brought Senator Barack Obama to this point in time, in history?!

Imagine? Can you just imagine? Now imagine the fact that this has all been a long, long road that began with just one step…just one step…and you will realize that….

WE DID THIS! WE BROUGHT THIS MOVEMENT TO THIS POINT….WE DID! And NO MATTER what happens come Tuesday, November 4, 2008 - we are left with the understanding that truly nothing, truly nothing is impossible. Nothing at all. If we can contribute to this individual, with everything stacked against him, and get to this point where he is quite possibly going to become the next President of the United States of America - then my God, we can do ANYTHING. ANYTHING at all.

Kennedy, Harriet Tubman, Gloria Steinem, Madeline Albright, Prince, Michael Jackson, Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston, Frederick Douglass, Thomas Jefferson, Sidney Poiter, Janet Jackson, Benjamin Franklin, Sojourner Truth, Abraham Lincoln, Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry…oh..I could go on and on with the list of people who have been game changers. People who have accomplished things beyond their wildest dreams and beyond anyone’s conceptions. And you know why?

These people got to the point where they literally changed the game by FAITH. Let me say that again.

These people changed the game by FAITH.

Without faith in themselves, faith in people to change and to want something more for their lives, and without the faith from people — these individuals would not be in our minds as heroes, as extraordinary human beings.

The beauty of this is not just that it only takes one and that we all can be extraordinary by believing in our dreams and holding on dearly to our faith in those dreams, even when things go dark, eve when we have no concept as to how to get to that huge dream - no, the beauty of all of this is that we are all extraordinary.

Yes, I said it. We are all extraordinary. There is no other way to look at it, except for just as that. You see, there can be no leader without followers. There cannot be a conductor without the orchestra — there is no music without the orchestra nor without the conductor. So you see, there is no way that the people we call extraordinary can be extraordinary without US also being extraordinary.

Our faith in them, our contributions to their efforts, our support of them takes FAITH and FAITH is an extraordinary concept seeing as how it is is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

So when you look at the massiveness of the movement that pushes Barack Obama forward, whether or not you support the man, understand this very well. We are all extraordinary and we recognize that we are extraordinary when we exercise faith. When we just believe in something with faith the mere size of a mustard seed, and work hard on our dream, we can truly move mountains. And Senator Barack Obama’s campaign has done that…we have literally moved mountains. And he could not have done that without us and we could not have done it without him….he is no more extraordinary than us and we no more extraordinary than him. And if we can do this, then why not be extraordinary in our lives, all of the time? Why not step out on faith in ourselves, as we have done for him, and lead our extraordinary lives that are just waiting for us? Why not?

Let me start off by saying — this is about us.

This campaign is not about Senator Barack Obama. This campaign is not about Senator John McCain. This campaign is not even about Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Joe Biden, or even Governor Sarah Palin.

No, this campaign is, has always been, and always will be about US.

This campaign is about us because whoever is chosen to be the next President of the United States of America is direct reflection upon us as American citizens, as a nation.

Assuming Obama wins, the man will have the ability to do a lot of good.

But there's some things that are better fixed bottom-up (grassroots and individual action), rather than top-down (action from government and corporations). For instance, making the transition to sustainability is going to require a lot more than just legislation - we have to get the myth of consumerism-as-fulfillment in check, for instance, and the battleground for this fight is our own lives. We need to fix our own lives before we can help others to fix theirs. Moreover, we need to create further demand for positive, constructive change, by selling our solutions as win-win: we lead happier, more fulfilling lives AND we help improve the world. Progressive thinker Adam Werbach came up with this idea, and I think he's absolutely right.

In this election, we have built the networks needed to accomplish these goals. If after the election any significant fraction of My.BarackObama were to start working on the issues which are best solved from the bottom up - living our own lives as the basis of positive change - then we would quickly see that Yes We Can indeed.

So, while it's true that Yes, Barack Obama Can do a lot, there are other things which we must do ourselves. Thoughts for things to do? I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I'll post some of my tentative bottom-up solutions soon.

Why we need change.

We need change for a better nation.

We need change for a stronger people.

When I listen to some of the negative talk comming from some of our fellow citizens, it makes me wonder do these people really want change or are they expressing their inability to accept change. Too many times we talk about how much certain aspects of our lives need changing but yet when presented with the opportunity to make a change or be part of a change, we hesitate or even fight against change. Today I am happy to say that I feel we have been presented with one of the best opportunties to make it happen. I believe that the forces that once told us to fear change will be overcomed. This is our time, this is the time to remember that power to make a change lies in each of us and not the people who say we can't. Let us all stand with one voice and say that we all have the power to make a change and we will on November 4th. Yes We Can.

Obama and Love

Speaking as a psychologist, when I hear the angry gossip about Barack Obama's muslim, terrorist, marxist, socialist takeover of the real America, I am reminded of the people with whom I work. Their parents might have died when they were very young, or they might have been forced from their homes or countries by poverty, genocide or environmental calamities. They are ordinary Americans who have been traumatized by some of life's most unfortunate events. These are people who become experts at predicting dark outcomes in order to avoid ever feeling loss, hurt or disappoint again.

Many of my generation witnessed the assassinations of inspirational leaders. John F. Kennedy was killed on November 22, 1963. Aren't the tears and fears of that day still part of us? On April 4, 1968, didn't the shot that fell Martin Luther King tear into all of our hearts? Most of us were just beginning to believe that his mountaintop could be all of our homeplates. And who didn't love Bobby Kennedy? Just two months later, he was assassinated on June 5, 1968. He led with the promise that no matter who we were and what were facing in the tumult of the times framed by an increasingly painful Vietnam war, we could all end up in that better world for which we all hoped.

Have we recovered from traumas some forty years old? I don't think so. We buried our pain and learned to expect less from ourselves and others. We got used to a kind of dull apathy. It just didn't make sense to have too many expectations. My generation has been haunted by the ghosts who aggressed upon our idealism. We became calculating, pragmatic and cold - a quite cynical group used to the abuses of living in a country perched high upon aggressive materialism.

And then Barack Obama showed up, asking us to believe again. "Yes, we can," he said. "Yes we can."

Some of the gossip and anxious sputtering about the two kinds of America and and the symbolic use of a radical student from 1968 remind me of what happens to trauma victims when they have a chance to recover and to live again. They resist. They make excuses. They conjure up old imagery to keep from taking the risk of trust. Nobody in the real or not-real America wants to feel pain again.

When a people experiences great losses it is easier to subdue living. And most of us have become the widows of our dreams. We have a chance on November 4th to risk falling in love again with our faith, values and highest estimations of our own humanity. It will hurt, and it won't be easy. But there is life on the other side.

100,000 in Denver!

All I can say is WOW!

This was our first Obama rally that we ever attended. We could never attend the previous ones because of our work schedules (he was always here during the weekday in the past). Let me just say that my girlfriend and I were totally overwhelmed by the massive amount of people at this rally. It started at 11:30 so we figured we'd get there about 10am. We thought this would be early. Boy, were we wrong. Driving through Denver, we were astounded to see lines (sometimes 4 or 5 people deep) winding around the entire Civic Center Park and snaking in and out of every single surrounding block. It was a mix of young and old, black, white, rich, middle class and poor. But what they all had in common was the hope for change and to get a glimpse of the man who has jumpstarted the whole movement and has given it a voice.

It took about 15 minutes to find a parking spot about 5 blocks away but we managed. While walking to the event, we were again dumbfounded to see the line of people stretching for a mile in all directions. We had NO idea where the line started or where it ended! After circling around an entire block, we finally found the end and settled in to make our way to the park.

What was so amazing about this crowd was that there was nothing but positive energy! Some people had been there since 7 in the morning (and some even earlier, I'm sure), but the crisp fall temperatures and breeze didn't dampen anyone's spirit! We ended up making quick friends with a couple from Denver. She was a staunch Democrat while he had recently made up his mind to vote for and even volunteer for Barack. He had never voted Democratic in his life. This is the type of story that has been echoed hundreds of thousands of times across the country. Hope and change knows no party affiliation!

As we winded our way through to the park past vendors flaunting t-shirts, buttons and signs, it became apparent we wouldn't be able to get into the bowl of the park to get close to the stage, so we were redirected by DPD to take an alternate route to the outskirts of the bowl. As we approached the park, we were once again astounded. For as far as the eye could see, there was a sea of people stretching in all directions, from the City Courthouse all the way back to the state capital building steps! Unfreakinbelievalbe! People were standing on garbage cans and the marble walls surrounding the park, on the tops of surrounding builidings, clinging to light poles and trees, and some even ventured to climb up the forklifts holding the massive speakers lining the park area...all just to get a glimpse of Barack!

My girlfriend and I literally got stuck a few times trying to get closer, but we decided to move to the outer perimeter onto the road separating the park and the state capital building. This turned out to be a pretty good place to be. it was amazing, we looked toward the park....tens of thousand of people...we looked back toward the state capital building...tens of thousands of people...to the right thousands...to the left thousands.

It was simply awe-inspiring to be part of history like this. It was heartening to know that so many have awakened from the "slumber" we've been in the past 8 years.

We did run into a couple McCain/Palin supporters, but we both held our comments. We are here to make a positive difference and include everyone. Unlike many of the McCain rallys I've seen on TV, where those with opposing viewpoints where figuratively "tarred and feathered", this crowd was nothing but positive, even towards the couple of guys holding "We Don't Want the Kind of Change Obama Offers" signs. It's America, they're entitled to their views. That's what made this country great and what the forefathers envisioned.

Although we were never able to get a glimpse of "the man" we were able to hear every word crisply. A few dignitaries spoke and right at noon, Barack emerged. Even he was suprised by the throngs of people. "Goodness Gracious!" he said, "Does Denver do anything small?" The crowd rebutted with "Never!" Much of the speech repeated the talking points of his past speeches with many comments aimed at Coloradans, interspersed with chants of "Yes We Can" and "O-B-A-M-A".

After 40 minutes, our feet became weary and our stomachs started to growl for lunch, but it was DEFINITELY worth it! If and when this man becomes president in 9 days, we'll be able to look back and tell our kids we were there to witness a little bit of history and be part of the change we've been waiting for!

Yesterday I helped my son who recently registered to vote check and see if he was in fact in the registrar system since he recently moved.

In the process, we had to provide address and zip code information that matched his original registration information for verification purposes. We were quite shocked to learn he was not registered and could not figure out why.

We tried every address and zip code we could think of with no match. I checked at least eight times with determination. At that point he had given up on voting.

Finally, I decided to try something less obvious with chances being slim to none it would work (so I thought). I decided to try taking the Jr. off his name and what do you know??? It Worked!!! I was happy but shocked that the suffix of his name might have kept him from voting and it was not his mistake. How many other people might have gone through this, students and others voting for the first time and they decide to give up?

MORAL TO THIS TRUE STORY: Please check early to make sure you are registered properly especially if you’re a Jr., Sr., Henry the VIIIII etc., and know your past addresses and zip codes to locate your proper precinct if you have moved recently. My fellow Obama supporters, the state of Louisiana need you right this minute, and you can help from where you are via the internet.

The Shreveport Times, a paper in North Louisiana endorsed Sen. Obama today. This is a major thing as Obama will surely lose Louisiana as it is a solid red state.

The comments readers are posting as a result of the endorsement are absolutely outrageous! I warn you it will make your blood boil. But please don't return with more incendiary posts. Instead read the endorsement and reply with calm thought provoking facts about why you are supporting Sen. Obama. Respond in the fashion that you know he would do.

Please do so immediately as others may read your responses and something in their hate filled hearts may change as they go to vote. You have done so much to get Sen. Obama this far, please do this one additional thing. (Continue reading to find out how to help)

A PART OF WHAT BARACK OBAMA MAKE A LEAP FROM "LEAST LIKELY" TO WIN THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION, TO "FRONT RUNNER" AND NOW POTENTIALLY OUR PRESIDENT IS THE BASICS.

WHAT DO I MEAN BY THE BASICS?.

IN THE PRIMARIES, WHEN OBAMA STARTED TO USE THE PHRASE, OVER AND OVER, "YES WE CAN", AND "WE ARE ONE". AMONG OTHER COMMENTS, I DO NOT NEED TO LIST THEM ALL, JUST LOOK AT ALL OF THE "INSPIRATIONAL OBAMA VIDEOS" ON YOUTUBE.

WHEN OBAMA STARTED THE "YES WE CAN" THEME. DID OTHERS NOTICE AS I DID THAT IT "TURNED HEADS". MANY, INCLUDING MYSELF, HAD NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN POLITICS. THEN I HEARD THE INCREDIBLY INSPIRATIONAL SPEECHS, WORDS AND CHANTS THROUGH THE RALLIES. ALL YELLING A THUNDEROUS, "YES-WE-CAN".

IN THE FINAL STRETCH, PLEASE BARACK, GO BACK TO THE BASICS OF WHAT BROUGHT US HERE. READ AGAIN YOUR SPEECH FROM THE 2004 DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION THAT REACHED AND TOUCHED SO MANY. SAY THE WORDS THAT INSPIRE. "ONE VOICE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD", "YES WE CAN", "WE ARE THE ONES WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR".

PRESS THE FACT, AS YOU SAID IN THE DEMOCRATIC 2004 CONVENTION. "NOT THIS TIME, NOT THIS YEAR". JUST AS YOU STATED. THE OLD POLITICS OF HATE AND DIVISION AND SPIN ARE RUNNING WILD WITH MCCAIN AND PALIN LEADING THE WAY. SAME AS WHAT BUSH DID IN 2000 AND 2004.

YOUR WORDS BARACK, INSPIRED MILLIONS, AND CAN NOW, TODAY AND OVER THE NEXT 9 DAYS CARRY US INTO THE WHITE HOUSE.

SAY "CHOOSE HOPE OVER FEAR". THE LAST WAVE OF ABSOLUTE MOTIVATION, HOPE, INSPIRATION AND CHANGE CANNOT BE MATCHED BY OUR OPPONENT.

My whole life I've been avoiding taking part in a society that provided little or no "hope" for my generation. I've run from every path that led in the general "American" direction. I've been told that in doing so, I was destroying every chance of security, of happiness, of real "Freedom" and that I would only end in despair. Until now, I have not seen a reason to fall into line, a reason to "participate" in a system that to me, has never had "the little guy" in mind. Perhaps by not taking part, perhaps by not having my voice heard, I have allowed others to bring us to the place we are today... so with that in mind, I'm making a "Change" in my own life. I'm reaching as deep within myself as I can, to find a sense of "Hope" for our future. I believe that together we can bring this amazing country around, we can put an end to the mindlessness that has controlled us, and brought us enevitably to our knees, with War, Poverty, Homelessness, Unemployment, Racism, and Uneducation. Until today I have not seen a person come within grasp of leading us out of this darkness, until today I have not believed in a functional American system. Today I see what we've all been waiting for. Today I see what this fight and struggle has been about. Today I "believe". Barack Obama is evidence that what a country "For the people, By the people" can achieve, that as "The land of opportunity" can bring forth a person of such integrity, a person who has climbed the walls of oppression and racism, a person who reveals what "Freedom" truly means. A person willing to take a step in the direction towards an America undivided, and willing to stare this bureaucracy in the face, and tell it that the buck stops here. To bring forth an America where "the little guy" has a voice, and is heard. I've long felt the need for a change, for a complete overhaul of this great country... for someone to finally say what so many of us have been trying to have heard. I believe that person has come, I believe that person to be Barack Obama, I believe that with our help, and our guidance we can make a long awaited "dream" a reality. Just Say "No" to Any Immediate Bailout-Don't try band-aids to keep theTower of Babel Standing

Rabbis of antiquity interpreted the attempt by humanity to build a Tower of Babel that would allow people to storm heaven as a symbol of human hubris and technological power gone crazy. It was globalization for the sake of power, not for the sake of kindness or goodness, so, according to the Bible, God ensured that the whole thing would collapse. Scrambling languages and creating a multi-cultural reality provided a way for humans to develop their own less imperialistic goals, diffusing power and challenging the notion that the path to salvation lies with material conquests and technological prowess.

Our contemporary capitalist system and its globalization of selfishness has evolved into a similarly grotesque distortion as people are increasingly socialized into the goals of the system: accumulate as much money and power as possible, and refuse to allow any other ethical goals into the public sphere(we are allowed to pursue them in our own "private lives" but not together in social space). The human suffering that results is not only for the poor. As people internalize the ethos of the marketplace and its "looking out for number one" and its seeing others primarily in instrumental terms ("what can you do for me to further my goals or satisfy my needs?"), families feel increasingly unstable, education becomes training to "make it in a global competition," and politics increasingly focuses on how to best assist the most powerful in their aims to secure or increase their wealth, or to protect American corporate interests as they increasingly seek to dominate world markets.

The pursuit of money and power is a huge ethical distortion for human life and destructive for a society. Whether manifested in the failed wars in Vietnam or the continuing bloody conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and soon Pakistan and Iran, or in the collapse of our banking, insurance, and stock market systems, the ethos of selfishness and materialism are not sustainable in the 21st century.

So the careful and skillful manipulating of us into a mass hysteria that this all be worked out immediately and before Congress goes on recess to run for reelection, with dire predictions that nobody knows to be true, to rush to use our monies (currently proposing a trillion dollars, but there will be trillions more to come, because we will be nurturing a "culture of dependence" by the rich and their corporate holdings) to bolster this way of life. Democrats have bought in. Yet it is a huge error-it's like trying to put bandages on the Tower of Babel. Of course, the wealthy all think that this is an immediate emergency-they suspect that a Democratic President and Congress might be more willing to demand a better deal for ordinary citizens in return for using their tax dollars this way. And they think that our tax monies (of which they contribute very little, should be used to "provide confidence to the markets"-meaning themselves). Many of them don't care that the resulting inflation is likely to make most working people's savings, retirement accounts, and social security considerably less valuable in real purchasing power terms. But they are wrong to fear the Obama election-the Democrats, including Obama, are as much committed to propping up the current system as the rich, in order to prove (to the pundits and inside-the-Beltway crowd and their wealthy funders who together constitute their primary reference group) that they are "responsible." So their demands for "accountability," re-regulation, and "limits on executive incomes" throws the merest little restraint while the hundreds of billions that will be spent will resuscitate the system of selfishness, keep the majority of corporate executives benefiting from the excesses they current enjoy, and not even touch on reshaping the fundamentals.

This is an extraordinary moment, a crisis like this is a precious thing and should not be wasted. If we had any ethically or spiritually visionary leadership, they would reject any immediate bailout, and instead, talk of ethical and spiritual reconstruction of the society in accord with a New Bottom Line: that every institution should be judged efficient, rational and productive not only to the extent that they maximize money and power, but also to the extent that they maximize love and caring for others, generosity and kindness, ethical and ecological sensitivity, and awe and wonder at the grandeur of the universe.

To start that process, we should demand that any corporation receiving help from our government give a corresponding level of ownership and control of their venture to the people of this country. Moreover, any such corporation should be required to meet the terms of the Network of Spiritual Progressives' proposed Social Responsibility Amendment to the Constitution: that any corporation with an income of more than $50 million a year must get a new corporate charter once every ten years, to be granted only if it can prove a satisfactory history of social responsibility as measured by an Ethical Impact Report and as decided by a jury of ordinary people whose task is to represent the interests of the common good.

Meanwhile, the rest of us should be protected as the Tower of Babel collapses. So the hundreds of billions of dollars being thrown recklessly by our Congress into the hands of the very people and corporations that fostered the current meltdown, should instead be used to create a national bank that would provide mortgage assistance at affordable rates, buy up and restart in the hands of the people who work within them any at-risk corporations providing socially useful functions at a price not dictated by the need to ensure that the wealthy prosper, recreate ( for those who've lost them) and sustain (for those who still have them) pension funds for families with incomes under $300,000/yr., create a single-payer universal health care system of the sort now being used by Members of Congress, and provide strong incentives for alternative energy-oriented investment and a minimum wage that rises with inflation to ensure adequate compensation for working people.

Yet these are only baby-steps, and the moment is now to insist that the elections themselves be dedicated to exploring more visionary approaches to reconstructing our economy on the basis of caring for each other and rejecting the materialism and selfishness that has perverted our media and threatens to continue to destroy our economy in the years to come. Just say "no" to the demands for an immediate "bailout" of the wealthy with your tax monies-and take the time to use this amazing historical moment to put ethical and spiritual values back into our economic life!

David's Daily, Day Journal of a Freelance Reporter, "Signs Of Hope"

I spent the latter half of the week, in a numbed state of anger, fear, uncertainty and a compelling urge to get involved, get active, and try and put my slim, frail shoulders to the wheel of a stuck wagon, mired and sinking in mud, in the hopes that my meager efforts might somehow help all we face today.

I am sure, nearly all other Americans, and indeed, even international citizens, feel exactly the same way, or nearly the same way, these past few days.

I divided my time just about evenly, between, writing scathing articles on the short sighted, myopic, self driven perspectives of Republican "Leaders" and modern "Econo-Wizards", deriding their lack of action, their lack of real substance, their insistence that the common man should give all they have left and turn it over to the same persons responsible for ALL of these massive failures and collapses. Without question, and quickly, before anyone has any time to study the matter at all. It is precisely, this Bush Agenda, of "Act Now, Think Latter", that got us into the mess we are in right now, Iraq, is only the most obvious example of this "leadership" style, a monumental MISTAKE, holding up most of our military, and costing the U.S. BILLIONS of Dollars every month, month after month, and NO END in sight. Not, this time, me thinks, this time, Congress must THINK FIRST, ANALYZE, then act, but act CAREFULLY. No more "Act Now, Think, and PAY, latter" "Plans" for this President.

The other half of the time, I spent volunteering for the Obama Campaign, I am now a Regional Deputy Field Organizer at the State Offices of Obama/Biden '08, State Of California, and a local Neighbor to Neighbor outreach organizer for my own neighborhood, in my Congressional District. My home, is now, a grass roots Neighborhood Obama '08 outreach office for the Latino Community of my District. No, in case any Republicans are wondering, I am NOT being paid for this, THERE IS NO COMPENSATION at ALL. In fact, I have to go around to the local businesses in my area, begging for donations of supplies and services to meet my office needs such as ink, paper, copying, et all, any money donated, is forwarded directly onto the main State Office, not one penny is withheld, not ONE CENT. I had to buy my own "T" shirt, my own posters, my own button I wear, myself, there is NO MONEY for these offices, they are ALL DONATED by the People!

But in the middle of all this concern, and devotion, I have been getting weary, I never wanted to be a political organizer, I wanted to take lovely photographs, make fun and lighthearted commentary on common people, being themselves, enjoying their lives, and the beauty of the cities they have built themselves, many with their own hands.

I compiled a few photographs, and a few endearing stories, in a composite, view, of Common Americans, getting back to normal, what I see as "Signs Of Hope".

In the dark, and roughly finished interior of an old office building dedicated to promoting the Arts, all the Arts, as a community outreach tool to improving the lives of all citizens in Los Angeles, there stands an organization known as The Los Angeles Art Complex, at 801 East 4th Place, Los Angeles CA 90013. There, the Local Congressional District 34, Obama Organizers have met for their staff meetings. At the last meeting, a slim, outgoing, very vivacious and forward 8 year old Latino boy, showed up, all by himself, and introduced himself to me as his local elementary school's Obama Motivator. He was accompanied by his best friend, a very pretty and devoted little 8 year old Latina girl., whoes name I believe is Adrian. The boys name, is Manlio Adrin Torres, but he, and his friend proudly announced to me, "Everyone just calls me Chicken Little!". Most 8 year old boys private rooms are filled with toys, posters of Harry Potter, or Disney Characters, baseball mitts, soccer gear, all the stuff that most 8 year old boys regard as their priceless treasures. Manlio's room, looks like an Obama Field Office, He has Obama Posters, Stacks of Obama Literature, in BOTH English and Spanish, Fliers, Door-Knob Leaflets, buttons, T Shirts, he even has "Contact Lists". Most 8 year old boys, spend their recess and free time after lunch, playing with their friends, or just being with their friends.

Manlio does have many friends at his school, and many admirers as well, But Manlio, spends his time promoting the Obama/Biden Ticket to his school mates, hoping his message to them, will reach home to their parents, uncles, cousins, and all the people in their extended family contacts. He is tireless, ceaseless, filled with HOPE, DEDICATION, LOYALTY, and HEART, and regards Barack Obama as his PERSONAL HERO. Manlio's friends may currently call him "Chicken Little", but, I see him as a young LION, I see him as, "The Little Boy Who Can!". Manlio took, Mr. Obama's message of "We Can!", and PUT IT TO WORK, he is living PROOF, of HOPE, And a fine young man, by anyone's standards, Republican, Democrat, or anything else. Please join me in saluting this fine young person, for his personal efforts and contributions to his community at the tender age of 8. He is an INSPIRATION to ALL of us in these hard times we face ahead. Manlio asked me, before my parting, if he might ask a "Big Guy" like me, if I could get him a signed photograph of Mr. Obama for his wall. Rest assured Manlio, one is ON THE WAY. (It may even have a special message attached, just maybee....)

Down the street, from the Arts Complex, in the Latino section of downtown Los Angeles, was a family, buying hot dogs, from a local hot dog street vendor parked in front of a downtown store. The boys, and the parents, were gobbling down their bacon wrapped all beef grilled hot dogs smothered in freshly grilled onions and green peppers. The activity, the innocence, of this, struck me as lovely, beautiful, Americans, being Americans, having a good time with just a simple hot dog, and each other. I couldn't resist snapping a few pics of them, and of course, I HAD to sample a couple, or maybe THREE of those DELICIOUS street dogs MYSELF!

Around the corner, from my humble little apartment now turned into an Obama Field Office, was a film crew from CBS, channel 2, filming an episode of "Numbers". They do this a lot on my street, my street is filled with old brick multiple storied apartment buildings, with exposed iron fire escapes, that double as balconies in the hot summer nights for all the residents seeking relief from the relentless California Summer Heat. It looks like the Bronx, in New York, or Manhattan, in the early 1920's, and is one of the favorite sites for many, many film crews of Los Angeles. And it occurred to me, this too, is a sign of HOPE, people back at work, people making movies in Tinseltown, I felt a little re-assured that not all companies have gone bankrupt, some are just fine.

I hope you all enjoy my little departure from the depressing, I know I needed some reassurance myself.

You may have already read the following in my quotes, however I find it appropriate to repost it here in the first blog. The following is a quote from the Dalai Lama:

With that said, I think it's important for us to remember we can share our thoughts/ideas/beliefs but we CAN NOT force them upon someone. (Please feel free to take/leave what you like from anything i blog. It is your right to do so!)

Now that we have that established, onto the blog!

Some people may be asking themselves, Why should I vote? Will it make a difference?

Let me just say this...From the beginning this campaign has been about everyone working together to make a difference. Yes, one person can make a difference, but imagine our strength and the change we can promote by joining forces! Just look at what we have done together so far!

Barack Obama has brought wonderful Ideas/Opportunities to the table, but he needs our support. Think of this: A politician could have a plan that would end the current hunger crisis present in various parts of the world. However, If they had no support, how far would they get??

I am asking you to take a moment and think about which issues are most important to you, and how Barack Obama's Policies can fulfill those concerns...

Now, are you willing to just set aside and hope enough citizens will show up to vote in favor of supporting your core position on issues/beliefs? I'm not...

FEATURING THE WOMEN'S VOICES FOR PEACE CHOIRLiner Notes:

In the past forty-five years of singing and recording, being an interpreter of song, but not a writer, I have most often gravitated towards songs that celebrate the delicate, delicious, sometimes rough and tumble dance between the sexes-(certainly a topic perennially foremost on the minds of humankind ever since Eve took that first bite!). Over the years it has been very gratifying to hear people's stories of how my music has touched them, intersecting with their lives at particular pivotal moments-I've heard all kinds of touching stories, but I must say what I hear the most are stories, (often x-rated!), of how my music has been the Soundtrack to various love affairs, lust affairs, seductions, lost virginities, honeymoons, and yes, I've actually been shown more than a few pictures of children who, as their proud parents tell it, were conceived to my music!-When I hear these stories I just smile and say, "Glad I could be of help!"

So I was pleasantly amused, but not surprised, when a friend emailed me an article he'd come across in which a well-known music critic declared that "'Midnight At The Oasis' was probably responsible for the conception of more children than any other song of the 1970's". He signed off with "Thought you'd like to see this-Have a great day, Fertility Goddess"-"Goodness!," I thought, "I've been called a "hippie love goddess" before, but never that!" That email came at the very moment I was due to create my thirty-fifth album. After years of being given free artistic rein to produce whatever inspired me, I was in a bit of a quandary. "What is there left to sing about? What is truly on my heart and mind most of all these days? What would a "Fertility Goddess's" Gig be in 2008?"

My conclusion was deadly serious. What's been weighing on my heart and mind so heavy it hurts, is the sad, deplorable, alarming condition of our Planet today-wars, nuclear proliferation, global climate change, rapid depletion and rape of the Earth's once bountiful resources, genocide, poverty, starvation. The whole litany of the world's ills make it imperative and urgent for us to all WAKE UP and start working together towards a massive healing of the growing imbalance that so-called "modern" society is spinning towards at such a reckless pace. Right now we live in a world so deeply out of balance, the thought occurred to me that if things continue as they are, there will come a time soon when there won't be any people to make romance and babies, and no place to do so either!

So...what to sing about...? Quite to my own surprise, after all these years of not particularly liking topical songs, I decided to make a protest album! However, the concept quickly morphed into a pro-peace album, because I realized the issues that concern me most, go much deeper than just singing clever songs that "diss" the current leaders in power and the irresponsible, destructive havoc they have wreaked upon our world. They are, after all, just the latest personifications of the age-old, worn out Patriarchal Paradigm of Greed, Power, Oppression, Aggression, War, and the "To the Victor Goes the Spoils" mentality that has created and fueled most of the misery on this planet for millennia. Surely this entire retrograde mindset MUST change if we are to survive as a species at all, but most of us have come to the conclusion that the only thing that will ever transform the prevailing outmoded, moribund paradigm is a peaceful, non-violent spirit of brotherly love and co-operation that must start from within and spread outward `round the world from there. So...I wasn't as interested in songs of angry accusations, as in songs that pose questions like "War-What Is It Good For?," and "Why Can't We Live Together?," and offer positive solutions like "Make A Better World," "Pray For The USA," and "Yes We Can." Most of these songs were written in the 1960's and early '70's, but because we have not evolved (in fact we have de-volved!) I feel it is vitally crucial to voice these messages once again. As Pete Seeger said recently, "If you love your country, you'll find ways to speak up for what is right. Finding the right the songs and singing them over and over again is the right way to start."

As part of this project I created "The Women's Voices For Peace Choir", inspired in large part by a compelling book by Jean Shinoda Bolen called Urgent Message From Mother (Earth): Gather The Women, Save The World. I enlisted many women-singers, activists, writers, and even an Indian holy woman named Amma (known to her millions of devotees `round the world as "Divine Mother," and in the West as "The Hugging Saint"). Most of these women have boldly and tirelessly been lifting their voices for peace, non-violence, and social justice their whole lives, and their commitment to these causes has been deeply inspiring to me over the years. Now we have all gathered here to lift our voices together in a heartfelt Musical Prayer for Peace. I am humbly grateful for their unanimously positive response and gracious participation in this project.

I am also deeply grateful to my Brothers in Music-David Torkanowsky, Tony Braunagel, Hutch Hutchinson, and Shane Theriot (known here as "The Free Radicals") for responding so enthusiastically to the concept of this project, going to great lengths to make themselves available, and delivering such inspired, soulful, FUNKY renditions of these songs. It is our hope that our efforts here will inspire minds and hearts and that these songs will become part of the Soundtrack to the Change we must all become part of, a Soundtrack to the creation of a New Paradigm in which we finally recognize that we are all ONE (as Garth Brooks says in "We Shall Be Free"-"There's only one race and that's MANKIND"). We are all linked together, and we must find a way to create Unity, Harmony, Cooperation, and Peace On Earth. "Peace On Earth" must become more than just a sentimental slogan on a Hallmark Christmas card. It's been a prayer in the hearts and minds of most humans since time began, and at this pivotal moment we need to work together to manifest it as Reality. Listen to these songs, turn 'em up LOUD and let's get to work!

Seattle Musician posts video-A new song titled, "Yes We Can"

I'm a singer songwriter from Seattle and I just uploaded a video to Youtube that I think is relevant in these final weeks up to the election. My song "Yes We Can," cowritten with Hans York (also Seattle resident), was uploaded today'.

The song is about Americans making change by paying attention, "staying engaged" and getting involved.

The video was filmed and coproduced by Stephen Sherrard. The music was also recorded at Stephen's studio in Issaquah. It features most of the musicians (everyone except bass player, Jon Hamer, because we forgot to move the chair between Jon and the camera when we were filming) including drummer, Ben Smith, who is currently out on tour with Heart, Dan Tyack on pedal steel, Greg Fulton on electric guitar and Hans York on acoustic.

What, exactly, is Barack Obama Asking You to Believe?

When was the last time voters were asked to play a part beyond an election? Are we prepared to answer Barack's call?

When you go to Barack Obama’s website you are met with this quote, “I’m Asking You to Believe...Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington. I’m asking you to believe in yours.”

How many people that are chanting “Yes We Can!” do you think have really thought about what this quote means? Maybe, you should pause for a moment and think about what it means to you.

If change is what you are after, getting Barack Obama in the White House is only part of the equation.

Change is defined (according to dictionary.com) as, “to make the form, nature, content, future course, etc., of (something) different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone: to change one's name; to change one's opinion; to change the course of history.”

If “change” to you is about seeing a black man in the white house, then you are only perceiving a small portion of change should Barack Obama win the Presidency.

If “change” to you is about seeing the gas prices decrease, then you are only perceiving a small portion of change should Barack Obama win the Presidency.

If “change” to you is about keeping us safe from terrorists, then you are only perceiving a small portion of change should Barack Obama win the Presidency.

If “change” to you is about every American having healthcare, then you are only perceiving a small portion of change should Barack Obama win the Presidency.

If you believe that the issues you are facing in your personal life are solely the fault of our government then your perception of both, this election and your world, is one dimensional and while chanting “Yes We Can” today to get Barack Obama elected, you will, likely, be the very one blaming him later if you don’t perceive, receive and willingly begin to perform your part of the “We” in the chant.

So, while, statistics are proving that Barack Obama is the leadership that many United States of America citizens believe our country needs right now, the balance to “Yes We Can” is that all of us – white, black, yellow, brown or green with purple polka-dots – must be willing to do the mental and emotional work to bring about real change, first individually which will position us to develop collectively.

This quote is a plea to the willing, “I’m Asking You to Believe...Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington. I’m asking you to believe in yours;” a plea to those who are willing to believe in his ability to lead for changes that are going to be for the good of all while in the Washington White House, but more importantly in each American’s belief in their own ability to bring about change in themselves to create collective changes in our worlds from the bottom up: individual, immediate family, extended family, community, city, and state.

We can not undo what is done - not in the world, our country, or our individual lives. Change has to begin with you, and in your own life...with the choices you make. Your personal choices are solely about you, but rarely do the decisions you make only affect you.

Barack’s plea is valid to every American. Believing in your own ability is refreshing and revives individual possibilities in the face of challenging times, and challenging times are always easier when you have a mentor who can inspire and lead you where you want to go.

We must, all, be willing to acknowledge where we are – our personal beliefs and whether they are for the greater good; be willing to learn more, and make better decisions that will, ultimately, produce the collective changes we need to raise our country up.

On August 25th, 2008, Representative James Leach, a life-long Republican, addressed the Democratic National Convention. His words are among the most profound ever spoken by a political figure: at once damning of the flaws of self-centered wanton ignorance and myopic partisanship that have divided the United States and today have so polarized the people of this land that the once unthinkable prospect of an end to the free exchange of ideas now threatens to become reality, and acknowledging the many challenges, including flaws within our own society, that we, as Americans, united under mutual cause, have overcome as one people, one nation, standing together.

Like him, I have long stood firm in my belief that only through mutual respect and cooperation can the United States continue to be the great nation we know that it can be. We are a nation that believes in freedom for all, not just for the dominant, whether they be only a few or a majority, to dictate to the rest. We believe in the freedom to love, in the freedom to live, the freedom to share our ideas, and the freedom to seek our own happiness within this great experiment called democracy.

For each of us, freedom is something precious, even though it is all too often taken for granted. Freedom is also something fragile, a delicate balance between the guarantees of fairness for all and the liberty of each individual. In this place, we are free to live as we wish, but we are not free to cause harm to our fellow citizens, or infringe on their rights.

Once, we understood these things. Once, these principles were at the very core of what it meant to be American. Once, the debate between and within the parties consisted entirely of how best to fulfill that promise of our Republic to our people.

That is the promise of change offered by this year’s Democratic nominee, so eloquently stated by a true Republican: a return to the promise of America. Once more, we can be One Nation, one people, living in the greatest country on Earth – one with Liberty and Justice for All.

Many of us are critical of one or both candidates, vowing to withhold our votes, because of certain isolated mistakes those mortal men have made; of them I ask: Who is the perfect candidate that we should vote for? Many of us would choose to vote, but to vote out of anger, casting a ballot for a candidate we do not believe in as an act of revenge against our own parties for some symbolic – and irrelevant – slight; of them I ask: What is truly important to you? Many of us would vote based on circumstance alone, be it for reasons of race, or wealth, or the struggles of days long past; of them I ask: Is it more important who a person is, or where he has been, than how he leads? Many of us would vote, not for a candidate, but against the other, because we are so cynical, so bitter, that we would actually choose to turn down that which seems too good to be true, whether or not it is; of them I ask: Is your faith in your own worth so worn that you cannot trust in your own ability – not any politicians, but your own – to make something better than what exists today, for yourself and for us all?

Of you all, I ask: Is there any single issue that is so important, any single decision either candidate promises to make, that is so vital that it outweighs the inspiration to work together, to live in peace with one another, and to, as one people, proud but respectful, opinionated but rational, help forge America into the nation it has always been destined to become?

To me, no policy, no campaign promise, and no party-line stance is so important as reestablishing that above all, beyond locality and party loyalty, we are all Americans first. We are a family, brothers and sisters, sharing a home that spans a continent and beyond. As one great leader once said, a house divided cannot stand. Once more, our house is divided. This November, let us all consider our family, those so dear to us that we would gladly lay down our lives to protect, even though we may have never met. This November, we are given the choice to elect another great leader, or to go on as we have for far too long.

That is what Barack Obama represents: the promise of true leadership. Not establishing universal healthcare, or a withdraw from Iraq, or enacting comprehensive energy reform, or any of the other articles of change he works toward – those are all issues of great importance, but none are so vital to the future of our land and the destiny of our children who will dwell here. If we fail to stand up, fail to reclaim control of our own lives, fail to remember that we don’t need to wait on Washington to give us solutions, but can take action on our own, then we run the risk of never returning to the America of Jefferson and Lincoln and Roosevelt ever again. By failing to reclaim the promise of America, we risk losing it for all time.

It is not who Barack Obama is or what he hopes to do as President that makes him so important, but what he represents. He cannot give us back what we have squandered, but his leadership can inspire us to return to our most important duty: to forge a more perfect union, by the people, for the people, and of the people. We can achieve our dreams, if only we believe in our own ability to do so.

misquote him. It makes a campaign that claims to be misquoted look pretty bad.

McCain's telling on himself and every time Sarah Plain opens her mouth, she sticks her size-moose foot in it. They don't need Obama's help to fall apart, they're doing a fine job of it on their own.

IN the meantime, stick with the issues and when McCain tells another lie and Palin co-signs it, get the context of their meaning straight and blow them out.

And as far as lipsticks on pigs go, if the color fits, the Piglin ought to wear it.

     "It also occurs to me that in a way McCain and Rove have actually simply taken over the liberal blogosphere in some way. They are being played.

    Just a few examples—yesterday Obama gave a fantastic interview at the Service Forum. Did the liberal blogs even cover this? No.

    He gave a great speech on the trail. Are his town halls even posted or excerpted? No.

    The liberal bloggers have become McCain central. They make people click on his ads, make the world spin around him instead of focusing on our candidate and what he is trying to do. There is ZERO coverage of what Obama is actually doing every day talking tough on the issues. There is ZERO coverage of Biden (who is on the trail but the blogs don’t seem to care or cover him unless he is doing what they think he should be doing. Sadly AFP did cover him this week and people seemed to be too busy saying he was not doing anything to include the link with his forceful comments against McCain. The one time the blogs linked to Biden—when the MSM tried to make a big deal out his answer to a question that made Hillary look bad and he defended her. That was it).

    McCain and crew realized early this cycle that they did not have a visible internet presence. So what did they do? They took over the liberal presence, they are manipulating the leading liberal blogs, just as they manipulate the MSM. All to their own advantage. And the blogs have all fallen for this hook, line and sinker.

Does no one realize this?"

Normally I write and post my journal before I leave in the morning, not after I come home. I apologize to my readers for this inconsistency.

I cannot excuse my lack of discipline in this day, but I can offer an explanation, I was busy, very very busy, and pressed for time, it was a very productive and very adventurous day.

I had my interview, with the director, and CEO of the largest, best run, most humane homeless shelter in the country, the Union Rescue Mission of Los Angeles, currently run by Reverend Andrew, "Andy" Bales, with more than just a teency bit of help from his devoted executive secretary, and "Gal Friday", Ms. "M", Nickerson, an English woman of more than just exemplary talent and dedication.

The Reverend Andrew Bales is a very handsome, accomplished, friendly and skilled man, absolutely dedicated to his calling. He seems to be under more than just a little stress these days, more than just a little weary. He has been ceaselessly working for the interests of the homeless for 23 years, and has been the CEO of the Union Rescue Mission for the last 4 years now. And recently received some bad news concerning a loan, from the county board of directors, to help fund his efforts, a loan for 2.5 million, which had been denied. Recently, two of his major donors, both women, one named "Carol", and the other, a woman from Pacific Pallisaids, fell victim to these harsh economic times. Carol, once a generous donor, now lives at the Mission, the other woman, was supposed to come live at the Mission, but committed suicide before she arrived. With glassy eyes, and a low voice, Rev Andy declared, "She could not face the shame, the fear, the uncertainty of homelessness, and ended her life instead".

This problem is getting worse, much worse, not better.

According to Reverend Andy, "We are seeing people come into the Mission we have never seen before, full time students, students from fine schools like USC and UCLA, people with full time jobs, but who just can't earn enough to pay the high rents. Grandmothers on Social Security Retirement, forced out of their homes by ever escalating rents in a downward housing market. The price of housing is going down, but the price of renting in Los Angeles continues to go up."

I left over an hour ahead of time, deliberately, because I wanted to not only photograph the mission itself, but the area in which it resides. I strolled the byways, the sticky, grimy, hopeless streets, filled with THOUSANDS of societies cast away persons. Men, Women, Mothers, Fathers, Children, Grandchildren, Families, Grandmothers, the elderly, the diseased, the forgotten, invisible people of Los Angeles. It is a scene that more properly belongs in Calcutta, or Brazil, and not Los Angeles, not a major city of the United States. These are the "castaways", the "untouchables", the discarded persons of a society so infatuated with success and materialism as to consider it morally justified to ignore the helpless. It is a day I will NEVER forget, as long as I live.

So there I was, being the old, out of place, out of date, aging, hopelessly romantic, over the hill hippie I was meant to be... strutting up and down the streets, camera in hand, my press pass proudly bouncing on my chest, 30lb back pack with all my "supplies" in tow... snapping away, innocently, trying to somehow "help" with my craft....

It quickly became apparent to me, that my very presence, my camera, my press pass bouncing on my chest, was an affront, an insult, an attack upon the security and privacy of these people and what little dignity they had remaining.

Normally, when I bounce about, snapping pics in another kind of place, people smile, people come forward, wanting to be noticed, wanting that brief moment on the newspapers page....

But not in this place....

Here people scowled at me, gestured rude signals at me, even stalked and followed me on my journey, threatening me, yelling at me, accusing me, of being the "man", demanding I leave their streets.

Here I was "the man", here, I was "the enemy", here I was asked to leave.

It frightened me deeply, it saddened me deeply, I was here to help, but they saw me as an enemy, a traitor, someone who wished to use up what little they had left. It drained me, and when I came home, I feel on my knees, completely drained, utterly exhausted, and broke down and cried.... For I had fallen in love with the strength of a lost people that could never love me back, and never would.

But tears, however sincere, will not help these people, a voice may, working for change will.

So that is why I am late in posting this today....

Please try to understand my human failings.
