The Importance of Letting Your Voice Be Heard

I share this with you because the topic spoke to my heart after hearing people recently say "I don't vote; What good would writing or calling do; I don't have time to volunteer."

When I volunteered to be a community organizer several weeks ago, I was intrigued by the idea of helping to get the word out about another worthy cause. While the topic was Healthcare Reform, I saw the overall cause as something different. What did I see, you may ask. I saw the opportunity to continue learning, participating and educating family, friends, neighbors, strangers on the importance of being involved in the decision making process that helps to shape laws that govern our rights and privileges.

As John Adams said, "...Liberty cannot be preserved without general knowledge among people."

It was probably 9 years ago when I truly sought to better understand the political process at the local and national level. I was especially interested after 9/11 as the fears among citizens grew and the tolerance for diversity among faiths decreased. It became more important to me to learn what people in positions of leadership were saying about the future direction of my city and state - our country. So, I paid more attention to political commentary shared in the media like the NY Times, CNN and MSNBC and the local newspapers. After all, our parents, their parents and generations before endured unthinkable trials of might and faith to cause a universal cry for freedom, justice and equality. Their journey is inherently our journey because we hold the responsibility to maintain and improve on that which came before us. This means that we each hold a piece of the multicultural quilt that spreads across our free land. It also means we have a responsibility to let our voices be heard.

Our vote is one of the most critical ways we voice our opinions and take part in this beautiful system of democracy that was designed to work for the voice of the people. It is not a perfect system, but it is a beautiful system that continues to work to promote FREEDOM, JUSTICE, EQUALITY for all. There are thousands who lost their lives for the very rights that we have, and there are thousands more who are calling for actions to improve upon the rights that we do have. The recent Healthcare Reform debate is just one recent example.

There have been thousands upon thousands of calls and letters to government officials across our great nation to push for Healthcare Reform. No one knows yet what the line-by-line details of the final bill will include. What we do know is that the call for change is because our fellow Americans have spoken and said they witnessed or know of too many people negatively impacted by the loss of insurance, suffering declining health or losing loved ones because of a damaged healthcare system.

It took people, just like you and me, to make phone calls, write letters, share stories and sometimes hear the stories of families torn apart because of the horrific healthcare policies that are in place. It was the voice of people, like you and me, at the local and national levels that has helped push the proposed bill closer to becoming a reality. When it does, it will be a historic event.

As we continue on this collective road to shape our America, please be encouraged and continue to be encouraged that our voices do matter. It is very important that when we have the opportunity to speak for positive change- let us speak; when we have the opportunity to write for positive change - let us write; when we have the opportunity to vote for positive change - let us vote.

In general, I do not believe as adults we "do" because anyone tells us to. Instead, I believe we generally do because we allow ourselves to be open to the possibility that we can affect the outcome of a situation. That same openess to be a participant in the possibilities of life leads us to do the right thing in our time of need, and in preparation for tomorrow. I believe that resounding voice comes from a sense of honor, dignity, respect for our past and the hope for a great future that cares for all of our people - not just some.

If you are like me, your schedule is booked solid most of the time and you treasure your "me time." If you are like me, you understand that sometimes the best "me time" is when we open ourselves up to causes outside of "I" and give a portion to "we time." You are so very important to the progress of all people, not just in our great land.

United We Serve

OFA Passing It Forward — Mon, 31 Aug 2009 17:14:13 EDT

We, The World (WTW) and the Pass It Forward Movement (PIF) is taking part in United We Serve, a national effort launched by President Obama to engage more Americans in serving their communities this summer.

WTW will be launching a pilot program to give every person the opportunity to be a mentor and to have a mentor as part of the summer service initiative, which President Obama announced in his video message.

“In these tough economic times, we need volunteers more than ever,” said Arlan Berglas, WTW Executive Director. WTW is facing increasing demands for services, and volunteers can help us fill this growing need. We are pleased to join this national effort and thank the President for making this call to service.”

United We Serve kicks off on June 22 and runs through September 11, which will be marked for the first time as a national day of service and remembrance. The initiative is being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that improves lives and strengthens communities though volunteering and service.

“This summer, I'm calling on all of you to make volunteerism and community service part of your daily life and the life of this nation,” said President Obama in the video. “Economic recovery is as much about what you're doing in your communities as what we're doing in Washington – and it’s going to take all of us, working together.”

United We Serve focuses on five key areas where everyone can have a real impact in their community: education, health, energy and the environment; community renewal, and safety and security.

To make it easy for individuals to get involved, the Corporation created Serve.gov, a website that allows visitors to type in their zip code to find local volunteer opportunities, recruit volunteers by posting their organization’s projects, or get ideas for creating their own projects with friends, families, and neighbors. There you will find information about the Pass It Forward Movement.

Rally in Denver, Ironies

Hello all - Since I'm unemployed at the moment, I thought it might be wise to do something productive with my time, like support Obama's healthcare plan. I am in favor of a public option. I've never had health insurance in my entire adult life, so the idea of a public option really excites me, and I will be gravely disappointed if it passes without. I'm getting older and the idea of going without healthcare is bordering stupidity. But the costs are so high, it is impossible for me. I can barely afford the prescription I fill every month. I also work freelance jobs, so getting insurance through a company is not an option for me. So, I'm getting involved, learning more about the plan and trying to volunteer some of my time to see that our Congress passes some reasonable legislation - with a public option for those like me, who have never been able to afford health insurance. Would love to hear thoughts from others about your experiences. I know you're out there! Let's make our voices heard - just like we did in this past election! Let's make our voices heard about this important and defining issue of our time!

Mike and I just met with our Jeffco field organizer, Alyssa. We wish her well, as she will be leaving for college in California. Mike and I will be attending a training on saturday. Tomorrow we are hosting our first organizational meeting and planning for the future. Saoirse has taken up new duties, and with Patricia now living in Michigan (we miss you), there is a void in Golden. Mike and I will try our best to fill some very big shoes. It's time to re-energize and motivate Golden volunteers who worked to get Barack elected. That was the easy part. We now have to make sure our elected officials act on our behalf. We voted for change! Now we must demand it !

OFA at Turks Head Festival in West Chester, PA

On Sunday, July 19, OFA had a table at the Turks Head Festival in West Chester, the county seat of Chester County, PA.

We had anticipated doing a canvass in parts of the town that day, but given the number of volunteers and the expected size of the crowd at the festival, we decided to table instead. So we had to postpone our canvass volunteer training using Hassle Lines (see the July 17 entry in this blog). Flexibility!

We had two volunteers initially: one remained at the table to engage passers-by and the other walked through the festival grounds clipboard in hand for the same purpose.

It would be interesting to research which way is the more effective at 1) gaining declarations of support for the President’s three principles, and 2) the next step, signing up volunteers for the OFA effort.

Our Key Role as Volunteers in Nebraska

Sometimes it can be hard for volunteers in Nebraska to see how our efforts can change the outcome of a Congressional vote in Washington D.C. We tell ourselves that one person can't change anything. This mindset is a huge barrier to those attempting to organize the fight for health care reform in our state. It is hard to convince people to walk around a neighborhood going door to door, or call people they don't even know, if the volunteer can't see how there efforts matter.

This is what makes the fight for health care reform so unique and intriguing for those of us living in Nebraska. Our state does matter and our senator is nationally accepted as one of the key votes in the Senate. Ben Nelson's vote is one of two that the president himself has accepted as the key votes. The Boston Globe reported that President Obama set up private meetings with two senators that he sees as the votes he needs to pass serious health care reform. Senator Nelson was one of these two senators and his vote is accepted by many around the nation as the vote that will decide the outcome of this reform.

Nebraska, this is our chance to change the world. This is our opportunity to actually make a difference in this country. To change the way future generations think about health care. This really is our moment. Senator Nelson will listen to us if we show him that we want this reform. It is hard to put into words how monumental this moment really is for our state. Our senator could be go down in history as the key vote on a bill that literally changed everything we know about health care. Unfortunately, it could also go the other way. Nelson could be remembered as the one who stopped the change. The way history remembers him, and us, is up to us as volunteers here. We must show him we support this change.

So please get involved- call, write, knock on doors. Show the nation that Nebraska wants to see change in the way we view health care. Supporters are here, but that doesn't help the cause if we don't tell Senator Nelson that the supporters are here. He needs to see there is support across the state. We have to show him that we want change and that Nebraska really does care about the future of our country. It is hard to overstate the importance of our work as volunteering now. Can we really afford to go down in history as the state that didn't do everything in its power to influence our key senator? Do we want to be the state that killed our generation's chance to fix our broken medical system?

This is not how I want our state to be remembered. Let's go down as the state that made this happen. The state that gave our children affordable health care. The state that finally won the war for reform.

OFA in West Chester, PA Training for Canvassing

This Sunday, July 19, OFA will canvass for the President's three health care reform principles in West Chester, the county seat of Chester County, PA.

If we have new volunteers who have never canvassed before, we will do a brief training. We will, of course, hand out the printed materials and make sure everyone understands them. But, after that, we will do an exercise called Hassle Lines.

Hassle Lines

The group makes two lines facing each other--like a Virginia Reel. The members of one line take the role of OFA volunteer, knocking on a door. The members of the facing line take a different role, usually a person opening the door who we would like to talk to about health care. We give each line a few moments to get into their roles and then ask that they begin the conversation. We let it run for only 30 seconds or maybe one minute.

Poverty in America

I want to discuss poverty and its effect on our economy. I do not have all the answers but I do have a desire to initiate a dialogue on how to eradicate poverty. It is my belief that this is the perfect time to reach out and bring the people who live below the poverty level into the middle class. Our country and the world is on the verge of a great technological leap and our resources are being refocused to bridge the gaps that exist in our economy. It is imperative that we not lose this opportunity to institute a green economy and take a new and fresh approach to how we help those in need.

I am starting a non-profit in Hyattsville, Maryland that will use government resources to help those that others want to help but are apparently to busy to speak to. We must upgrade our workforce and change how we obtain energy as well as reforming our health care system. Why not use our volunteer time and government and private funds to establish businesses that train or re-train our workforce while we look at how we relate to the poor. Our law enforcement agencies are overwhelmed and our prisons are over crowed and we cannot afford to continue to fund programs that deal with the side effects of poverty and discrimination.

I am a veteran and a minority living in a wealthy state and I see homeless people and immigrants/migrants with no programs of substance to help. I have a background in social work and outreach to populations in crisis and I have decided not to take a 9-5 position and instead I will work for less money and advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.

ORGANIZING FOR AMERICA - Have You Seen This Video Yet?

Organizing for America - Have you seen This Video Yet? More then ever, you need it now to re-kindle the spirit that lived in us all prior to the election.

We need to get this video out in the public eye in a big way to re-kindle the spirit of optimism that existed prior to the election of President Obama.

Yes We Can (Change our Destiny) that is what we need to understand.

Post the inaugural, post the election, post the optimism fading, post the Republican's battle of the wills, it's sad to see our country slowly slipping back to the bad ol' days when the President is simply a news curiosity, just some guy in the White House. Barack Obama is more then that. He is the change we all voted for.

When I get pessimistic that such talk as the above is simply the talk of a dreamer, I hear President Obama speak. For instance, his speech at Notre Dame. It was historic, incredible, inspiring. it reminded me why I was so filled with hope on November 4th, 2008. When I hear him speak, I still get uplifted and remember who is in the White House.

But let us not forget the obvious, he's a human being, he can't correct everything at once, he has information now as President about our country we will never know and he is, I am confident, desperately trying to balance it all. I have not agreed with every move, espeically preventitive detention, but should we need or expect to agree with everything that anyone does? I agree with most and that's good enough for me to be a great supporter of his. I speak out when I don't agree with President Obama or anyone, but that doesn't mean I don't ardently support President Obama. In the past, I agreed with very little our Presidents have done, so this is an extremely refreshing change, especially at a time in our history which is unparalleled in it's complexity and danger to our society, our country and our world.

My only personal regret is that the video I directed and produced to keep the dreams alive, Yes We Can (Change our Destiny) has not been endorsed by Organizing for America and posted on its home page (or endorsed by Oprah or some such celebrity that can bring instant distribution to this cause, this quest to make optimsm and involvement the norm). This video should be endorsed by someone or some organization of such stature. It should be the rallying cry that we all remember to say to ourselves every day, that "YES WE CAN CHANGE OUR DESTINY." If we realize that simple truth, that we are in control of our destinies, we will work hard for change. We will become involved. Pessimism occurs when we believe we aren't in control, when we believe that hope is lost, when we believe that we can't make a difference. But the election proved how much we can change the world, how much we can accomplish when we act in unity with hope and optimism, when our world collectively believes that YES WE CAN CHANGE OUR DESTINY.

I have tried to move on, to concentrate on other causes, problems and issues in our world and my life, to not continue to push so actively to get this video "out there" more. But every time I lose hope and become pessimistic about our world, I listen to my own words in that video and I realize that Yes I can Change My Destiny and the world's destiny, that I can be part of that, that I'm not just a weak individual without a voice. I'm just as capable of changing our world as anyone. Ghandi, Rosa Parks, Mother Theresea, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Maria Montessori, Jonas Salk, Orville & Wilbur Wright, Barack Obama, yes, these are great people, but they are people, regular individuals that began with simply a dream, to change our world. When you look back through history, it's not countries or corporations that created transformative change, it was individuals. The power of the individual is stunning.

If anyone out there in the administration of Organizing for America listening please take a moment to watch this video. It's only 5 minutes. I'm a professional filmmaker, I promise you, it will be worth your time. This video was made as my service to America. But with "only" 130,000 + views (which is teeny tiny in the world of YouTube) which occurred mostly around January 20, 2008, this video is not inspiring anyone anymore. It could be inspiring millions right now to stand up and be part of the solution, not the problem, to realize one's own civic opportunity and responsibility, if Organizing for America would simply endorse this video and place it on their home page as a permanent fixture of inspiration.

Do not think I do this for any fame. I don't even want credit for this film. This project was entirely pro-bono and continues to be so. I simply want to help before my time on this Earth is over.

Celebrating the first 100 days of President Barack Obama - Education & Healthcare

A couple weeks ago we were asked by OFA if we had in our community a positive story to highlight the first 100 days in office of President Barack Obama, and here in Saint Lucie County, Florida, we do. We started organizing and holding regular meetings right after the elections.

Within days of the President’s call to service, a small planning group was formed to help with the President’s vision to bring hope to thousands of college students in our communities and the group’s mission was outlined to provide an outlet for active citizenship in the area of college affordability.

On April 11, 2009 a new non-profit organization, Iduka, was incorporated in the state of Florida.

Iduka was created to promote college affordability by connecting students with lenders, schools, and community service organizations through an Internet based interest free micro-loan program.

Students may also qualify for a loan to grant conversion. In such cases students can pay off their loans by volunteering in their communities if Iduka can secure enough donations to cover such loan to grant conversions. A student enrolled in a Health Care Program at the local community college, can, if matching funds are available, convert an Iduka micro-loan into a grant by volunteering at a local hospital or community hospice.

In addition to a few professionals that have already provided pro bono services, we currently have a group of 10 local volunteers working hard to make this project a reality. This commitment and enthusiasm is a direct result of President Obama’s call to bring change to our communities, country, and the world.

Iduka is currently seeking seed money start operations and fulfill its mission. We are also actively recruiting members to serve on the Board of Directors, particularly individuals with a background in Law and Finance.

Being an Absentee

Voting by absentee ballot is usually a lonely experience, but not last November!

I live in Vancouver, British Columbia, and late last August, as I was walking to the grocery store, I noticed the neighbourhood drag was closed to traffic for one of the city's summer street festivals. I wandered over to browse the numerous booths selling this and that craft or cause, when what should I see? Team Obama had set up a table!

I made a beeline to the five or six volunteers at the table to express my solidarity, and was greeted warmly. Of course, as soon as I announced I was an American citizen, several clipboards were thrust at me simultaneously, but I explained that I was already registered to vote and had even voted in my primary.

It was wonderful to talk enthusiastically about the election with other voters, but the best part was when I told them how happy I was that since my state, North Carolina, was in play this election, my vote finally had some weight. The gang cheered. Not only that, one of the volunteers at the booth was from NC! She expressed the same sentiment and I left to do my shopping feeling even more hopeful of success in November.

Just so we get those out of the way.

To answer the question: The structure, style, leadership, groups, all of it is volunteer created and volunteer led. I emailed OFA and received a response that CAN is a volunteer created grassroots organization.

Here is what I like about the CAN groups:
- National network of volunteers that are active now, or at least will read their email and join an online group because a stranger asked them to
- State network of the same
- Updates of facts, action items, once a day under the "daily digest" option.

Here is what I dont like about the CAN groups:
- Aggressive against those elected officials who disagree. We received instructions during the Campaign by Obama himself to treat the other side (hillary at the time) with respect. See my MyBO blog for excerpts of his speech (under mybo username J. Lowe).
- Admins are not clearly labeled a "Volunteer" - plus one of Lisa's titles are just like the DNC's official voteforchange.com campaign used during the general election
- Establishes a top-down hieararchy, and the campaign was a flat organizational style.

More on the last point - I was told by Matthew Barzun that the organization is flat, and received a diagram from him too. It is a circle of volunteers surrounding the staff at the center. There is no hierarchy - we are all equals. Also, Camp Obama taught that there are only two types of volunteers: those who make phone calls and knock on doors, and those who teach and encourage others to make phone calls and knock on doors.

The organizer is not higher than the volunteer, it is just a role to complete the group assignment: to talk and listen to voters, and to bring that information back to HQ.

What is the action to take on the CAN group? I can only tell you what I am doing: listening. I am not sold on this group right now, and am watching the communication style to learn how to be a better organizer for our local groups. My meditation on this group is to remember our call to Respect, Empower, and Include.

As far as my volunteer action from here? Do what I have always done: Whatever the OFA website tells me to do, just like Forrest Gump in boot camp. And in the meantime mayb make something up that sounds like something they would like me to do.

If I were to bet $20 on what the next OFA action is, it would be this: SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND

This was done during the first 6 months of the campaign and is what won Iowa. There was a link on the mybo website to submit ideas about important issues, and the field staff were trained in effective listening and knocked doors for months. All of the info was sent to HQ. Groups of intelligent minds were linked online who received our info, and researched and discussed it, and used it to create the Blueprint for Change and craft the course we are following right now. So it is most logical that there will be another round of what worked. So, good money is on house meetings led by you and me and everybody's cousin, using the question sheets they give us.

Back to action (most important). I was thinking to host a health care meeting - I missed the opportunity during the holidays - and now since Daschle is out, staff would have time to incorporate our information into the health care design. Probably they may do another call under new leadership, i dunno.

Or possibly i might host another USAservice.org volunteer project - doing something good for others. Then I'll feel like daisies and sunshine and the world will feel like the fabric softener commercial featuring a teddy bear.

Either way, life is good.

Wonderland of Opportunity...

Wonderland of Opportunity…

I woke up this morning to a winter wonderland. It had snowed all day yesterday and then well into the night. Heavy, white snow clung to tree branches, bushes, rooftops, and decks. A clean white carpet covered the earth. A scene this pure and innocent was created not by the hand of man but was there for him to gaze upon with wonder. It would be but a brief display, for the sun shone brightly this morning and soon its’ warming glow would melt the multitude of snowflakes that had created this awesome scene.

I dressed quickly, grabbed my camera, and headed for the cold outdoors. This was the photographic opportunity I had waited for all winter. The realities of politics, the sagging economy, and the hungry mouths around the world could so easily be forgotten here. In a few short hours, the snow had covered all the ugliness of the world and the conflicts of its people. Oh, if only the answer to our woes were that simple. But what if we took only a clue from this wonder of nature? Our moments of opportunity are only short and fleeting. I want a better world for my children and grandchildren. Together we can change the realities of today and make for a better tomorrow.

Real Work Now Begins

Today, January 20th, was one of the most amazing days of my adult life. I was privy to a historic event that I thought I would not have lived to witness and thus, it's the most rewarding experience. I enjoyed watching President, Obama and First Lady, Michelle interact loving with eacb other. Over the course of this campaign, my family almost lost our home and so I was working 16-hours a day to keep us afloat but I blogged, bookmarked topics and answered misleading questions on Yahoo Answers!

This was my personal contribution to this history-making event and I feel remarkably proud to have been a part of it. I feel as if I have inherited a new family of two beautiful girls along with a brother, a sister-in-law and a grandmother. Let's us pledge to work together to continue this wonderful journey to change lives, fix our economy, health care and educate our children. The real work now begins so it's a new day dawning.

God's speed Mr. President and First Lady, Michelle Obama. I pray for the courage to face life's struggles and joy that comes from knowing that anything is possible, if we put God first. Let's us pray that all Americans and people everywhere will pledge to change each corner of our space by encouraging others to do their part for the common good.

By the way, Michelle you looked gorgeous and you wear these young designers' clothes very well. I can see that the President is proud of you and we all love you too.

They Also Serve Who Write

I googled my name out of curiosity, and found my other blogs. I was pleased to see the connection between this site, and another site dear to my heart. I recently joined Navy for Moms, an online community for Navy Moms. I feel like it's a good way for me to support the troops.

I believe in the power of the pen, or in this day and age, the age of technology, the power of the internet. The internet, though often abused and used for evil purposes, can be a wonderful tool for worthy causes. It is a wonderful way to communicate with others, even others clear across the world. It can be a way to increase understanding among people.

When people get involved in online communities, and start sharing things dear to one's heart, such as family photos, pictures of sacred places, interests and beliefs, we soon learn that, no matter what country or background we are from, we are more alike than we thought. It becomes evident, to the honest heart, that we are all brothers and sisters, of one humanity, children of a loving and benevolent God. With that mind set, we begin to really care about this planet Earth, and the people on it. We find ourselves wanting to make life better for all of us, in whatever way we can, using the talents we have been blessed with.

I'd like to think that those of us who are passionate about blogging, using our love for the written word, and our talent for putting our thoughts on paper, or on Internet sites, are also serving worthy causes, as much as those who are actually on the front lines, serving as volunteers in hospitals, homeless shelters, or relief organizations. I believe we are, by sharing words of encouragement, telling others about worthy causes, and bringing the light of truth and hope into the hearts and minds of those living in the darkness of despair.

Fill Our Food Pantries -- Pasadena DIY Service Opportunity

A group of Obama volunteers gathered in December at the Pasadena, California, home of Marilee and Bruce to figure out how to channel our energy and enthusiasm. We came up with a quick community service activity – supporting our local food pantries and homeless service organizations.

This form of economic relief is easy and much-needed. All organizations are reporting record numbers of people seeking aid, and fewer people giving donations.

If you’d like to join in, here are some places to start:

Ecumenical Council of Pasadena Area Churches (ECPAC) Friends in Deed Pantry – Food Drive and Volunteer Opportunity444 E. Washington Boulevard, Pasadena, CA 91104The Pantry provides supplemental food to 200 or more low-income and homeless families each week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but volunteers and food deliveries are needed daily.

Bring canned food, particularly protein, and packaged goods, such as whole wheat pasta and cereal, as well as fruits and vegetables from your garden. Food drop offs can be any day, but call ahead to ensure someone will be there to receive the items. 626/797-2402
The organization also needs people to work in the pantry. This could be a group or individual activity. They need help to serve clients, but could use a group to help on other days to clean, stock shelves and organize. Email pat@ecpac.net.

Bad Weather Shelter – Group Volunteer OpportunityGymnasium of the Pasadena Covenant Church, 539 N. LakeOperates during the winter months, serving a hot dinner and providing a warm place to sleep. Foothill Unity Center – Food and Clothing Needed Last year the organization gave out nearly a million meals, and this year the need is greater than ever. More than 50 percent of their clients are under 18 years old. Find out more about their programs.

Food ProgramsThey accept all kinds of food donations, including perishables. They also take the usual pre-made packaged foods, canned and dry goods. They have a family food program, which supplements a family with groceries for about 10 days. They also have a bag lunch program for those who are homeless or have nowhere to store or cook food. Drop off food during business hours 9-5, closed 12-1.

Union Station Foundation – Group and Individual Volunteer Opportunity

Union Station has an excellent Web site describing their volunteer opportunities, which include adopt-a-meal, a once-a-month commitment perfect for a group. They also need kitchen volunteers to help prepare and serve breakfast and lunch, Monday through Saturday. They even have volunteer orientations every couple of weeks.

Bienvenidos – Group Food or Clothing Drive Opportunity

Bienvenidos provides a wide-range of services for everyone from infants to adults to achieve their mission of “Keeping Families Together.” Their clientele are at or below 200 percent of the poverty level. Bienvenidos is one of the only organizations to provide on-site day care so parents can search for a job or apartment.

Bievenidos serves four counties. Their administrative office is in Downtown Los Angeles; their primary service delivery is in East LA, but they have 12 locations.

Obama election sparks new interest in civil rights

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - When Barack Obama is sworn in next week as the first black U.S. president, 97-year-old Alabama civil rights veteran Amelia Boynton Robinson will see a miracle in the milestone.

"I think it's an act of God," said Robinson, who was jailed and beaten decades ago in the racially segregated U.S. South.

For Robinson, whose mother was born just a few years after the end of slavery, the fight for equality did not end with the civil rights laws passed in the 1960s and it won't end with Obama's historic inauguration on January 20.

"To this day, I am still on the battlefield," Robinson told 35 educators, students and activists last week in Tuskegee, Alabama, during a four-day tour of civil rights historic sites in Selma, Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama.

Obama's election has rekindled interest in the U.S. civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s amid continuing racial tensions and wide disparities in income, education and health care between whites and minority groups.

In Alabama, visitor numbers are up dramatically at a center that marks the route of a five-day, 47-mile march led by King from Selma to Montgomery in 1965 by 25,000 people demanding equal rights for black Americans, said Tina Smiley of the U.S. National Park Service.

Doug McMillon, chief executive of the Sam's Club unit of Wal-Mart Stores Inc, has brought four large groups of executives to the center in recent months, and has commissioned a film so all his workers can share the experience, she said.

Activists Charles Alphin and Bernard Lafayette organize civil rights tours such as the one Robinson addressed.

Robinson, who once hosted Martin Luther King Jr. in her home, will travel to England next month to teach the principles of non-violence used in the sit-ins, mass arrests and protests that characterized the movement.

In the 1930s, she started a voter registration drive in Selma, Alabama, where African-Americans were hindered from voting until the mid-1960s by capricious literacy tests, poll taxes and the need to produce two white "sponsors."

Robinson catapulted the issue into the limelight in 1965 when she asked King for help.

Soon afterward, King led the historic voting rights marches in Alabama. On what came to be known as "Bloody Sunday," white authorities beat and tear-gassed protesters and television images flashed around the world.

A LONG ROAD

"It's the screaming I remember most," says Joanne Bland, who was 11 years old when she was knocked unconscious on Bloody Sunday. Her 14-year-old sister needed 26 stitches on her head; but both girls marched again the next Tuesday.

The violence sparked outrage and solidarity marches around the country and helped prod Congress into passing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a law that finally secured the right of African-Americans to vote.

Bland ran Selma's voting rights museum and now leads tours of the 20,000-plus town that is grappling with a high crime rate, drug problems, severe poverty and rising unemployment.

Bland says the Selma movement paved the way for the election of Obama, who visited the city in 2007.

"What we did here in Selma is why he was able to be elected," she said.

Obama often credits the black Americans whose struggle made his personal road to the White House possible.

"It's important for people to study and learn about this period of history so that we can continue to build on King's work and his philosophy," added Roger Vredeveld, 47, who teaches U.S. and black history in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and went on the tour.

Some analysts have described Obama's victory as ushering in a "post-racial" era, but civil rights activists say there is still much to be done. They point to such crises as Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which revealed deep racial divides, and recurrent cases of police brutality.

Another teacher on the tour, Arthur Romano, cited riots in Oakland, California, after the January 1 shooting of an unarmed 22-year-old black man by a white transit police officer, and said King's non-violent approach would be far more productive.

Oscar Grant's death, he said, "serves as a reminder of how far there is to go, and the need for serious, strategic and long-term community involvement on these issues."

Presidential Inaugural Committee and The Advertising Council Launch a New Public Service Advertising Campaign Highlighting President-elect Obama's Call to Service

President-elect Obama asking Americans to "Step Forward" and Volunteer in their Communities

Washington, D.C. - The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) and The Advertising Council launched today a new public service advertising (PSA) campaign aimed at summoning a new spirit of service in America. The television ad "Step Forward" and radio PSA "Chapter" feature President-elect Obama urging Americans to log on to USAService.org to find ways to make an ongoing commitment to serve their communities and their country. Nearly 6,000 volunteer projects and opportunities across the country are listed on USAService.org.

President-elect Obama's and Vice President-elect Biden's "Renew America Together" initiative, calling on Americans of all ages to participate in community service, begins on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 19th, to honor the legacy of a man who lived his life in service to others. On the eve of the Inauguration, thousands of community service events will take place in Washington and all across the country.

"President-elect Obama believes each of us, as Americans, has a responsibility to do what we can for our communities and fellow citizens. We've launched USAService.org to connect volunteer organizations with Americans in their community and make it easier to serve on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and beyond," said Josh Earnest, PIC Communications Director.

The Ad Council is distributing the new television and radio PSAs to stations throughout the country this week. Per the Ad Council's model, the PSAs will run and air in donated advertising time and space.

"We are delighted to join President-elect Obama and the Presidential Inaugural Committee for this poignant campaign that will inspire Americans to serve their communities and their country," said Peggy Conlon, President & CEO of the Ad Council. "Media companies have committed to support these new PSAs and I believe this critical effort will encourage Americans to answer President-elect Obama's call to service."

Several media companies have committed to support the PSAs in donated time and space. These media companies include: CBS Television and Radio; NBC Universal; CNN and the Turner Networks (including TNT and TBS); FOX Networks; Clear Channel Radio, Comcast Spotlight and Entercom Radio. The National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) will promote the television spots to their members and donate a satellite feed during the week of January 26 for the distribution to the cable industry. Additionally, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) is donating a satellite feed for distribution of the radio and television spots to the broadcasting industry this week.

"Honor Our Veterans" Community Service Event - Obama Advocates for Service-LA/OC

Born out of our grassroots volunteer efforts to elect Barack Obama, several of us in the Los Angeles and Orange County area have formed a group called "Obama Advocates for Service-LA/OC". Our intention is to continue volunteering as advocates for community service in Southern California.

We have decided to focus on Veterans for our first community service event. It will coincide with the inauguration and will take place on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - Monday, January 19th, 2009. Obama Advocates for Service-LA/OC will be visiting with and passing out gift bags to approximately sixty (60) patients at the Community Living Center located at Long Beach Veterans Hospital in Long Beach, CA. Our efforts are funded by our own grassroots donations (not by the Obama campaign/administration).

We are looking for donations of personal items to be included in the sixty (60) gift bags. Items we are looking for are: toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shavers, fingernail clippers, toenail clippers, post it pads, pens, etc. You could also write a personal letter or send a card for a Veteran to include in any of the gift bags. We are also looking for cash donations to purchase additional items.

National Service-Let's start Locally!

I am proud to say that I have always worked in the service industry. I have washed other people's dishes, cared for adolescents who were homeless, educated children about their environment, and most recently encouraged college students to get involved in their community.

I am amazed by the impact that one person can have, and I hope that my efforts are creating ripples in the communities I have lived and worked in.

From the first - I knew that Obama was going to be my candidate. I had always loved Hilary for her intelligence and what she represented as a strong woman, but it was Barack's statements about national service that sealed the deal.

It has been so frustrating to try to explain to family members from another generation about what I do and why I do it. It paralleled my frustration at knowing that for at least 8 years, the administration in Washington had no idea either and could care less. Finally, I had found my champion. Someone who will uphold my values and speak out for what I believe in.

I know millions of other people in America right now are feeling the same way I do, for a variety of reasons, and I am so excited to meet with them to help President Elect Obama fulfill his mission to bring change to the people in this amazing country.

Yes We Can Racine is an organization and an online community for action, information and conversation. hi Marla--I am now linked with so many different groups I need a program to help me keep track of them! I just joined your organization, Nations for Change, and wanted to drop you a line about what I'm doing and how I see myself interacting with many, many different groups.

My natural group is not my state or my Congressional District or my neighborhood. I've lived too many places to identify with where I happened to retire because I need sun & warmth & swimming; nice people in my neighborhood, but not my political group...

Here's what I'm doing: organizing with feminists. I have my own ideas of a web I'm weaving and what that could lead to, but my web depends on participating in many other organizations and their webs. I see myself as a cross-pollinator, a leader, a thinker, a writer, someone who has public-speaking and workshop-leading experience, and has recently added some podcasting & digital art skills in order to help me communicate.

So, I'm not signing on to any groups as a team member or even a team leader, because my plate is full as I realize my own imperatives; however, there is a lot of opportunity to share knowledge, resources, and whatever else the moment requires. I'm currently working on what I can contribute to another organization's conference in April (EngageHer, headed by Mable Yee), because although our goals are slightly different, we are both aiming for much the same population. My population is women, and in particular, women who are invisible and girls in high school or college.

I would love to be a feminist at-large member of your organization; it's critical that feminists expand their base and do a better job of explaining their goals, and I also think that other activist organizations really need the feminists--we've been organizing for a long time! We're natural radicals. We're out-there thinkers.

I'd be happy to discuss this with you more, or, maybe the best way to get where I'm coming from is just to nose around my blogs. You've already joined the FAB group on Facebook, I think, haven't you? That's great. I'd love to interview you for ROADTRIP. That might be a good way to get to know one another!!!

What November 4, 2008 Meant to Me

People around the world said "Yes we can" on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Yet, the work has only begun. While I am really delighted that Barack Obama is the President-Elect of the United States, I see my journey towards change in a more personal way. It is about who I help.

As with any leader, if the people do what the leader does change will come about. Otherwise, it was just hype. What President-Elect Obama has done so far is serve. And he's also opened himself up for major criticism. But at least he has done something and is willing, despite the criticism, to do more.

How many of us ordinary folk have gone to neighborhoods unlike our own to talk to people about the things they can do to make change? How many of us ordinary folk have the courage to put ourselves on the front lines in order to inspire others?

Barack and Michelle Obama have taken on a great task. They are the face of the service and of course they will get the most criticism. But what does it mean for me? It means volunteering in my community. It means being active in changing the things that negatively affect people who are not like me. It is a great undertaking and I am scared to death. But doing something is better than doing nothing. That is what Barack Obama has inspired me to do. Something.

While I may not change the entire world (who can?) I can change the part of the world that I live in. And that is what November 4, 2008 meant to me.

Keep Working for Change: UlsterCorps

I'm posting an email which grew out of a discussion Rik Flynn and I had on one of the many drives home from PA about how we can continue to work for change in our own community. Rik was a Vista volunteer back in the day and we're hoping President-elect Obama is introducing a similar project on change.gov with America Serves (see below). We'd love your ideas & suggestions.

Change.gov excerpt:

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

Our thoughts:

One, "first blush" thought that might be to include in the conversation(s) is how to tap into existing, well-functioning organizations (I'm thinking of a simile of Barack's notion with the federal budget, working with it, with a scalpel rather than an axe) such as United Way of Ulster County. I had a modest bit of dealings with it and Stacey Rein (head of United Way, Ulster County) when I was a School to Work Coordinator with BOCES. To my knowledge United Way does a great, very cost-efficient job of raising money for various non-profit organizations. But I don't know that there is a parallel effort for identifying and soliciting volunteers needed for these organizations. Perhaps one of the things to explore is some kind of coordinated networking with such an organization that would put the "human capitol", a volunteer base, into the mix along with the monetary channeling and networking? Perhaps maintaining a database of needs correlated with identified volunteers and their availability including occasional as well as more scheduled, routine efforts. Sorta like a "Red Cross" that dealt with non-profit organizations in a non-crisis mode? Maybe also bringing in leading politicos and administrators in such an effort, e.g. the new County Administrator; the U.C. Legislature to promote and work with other organizations?

I'm so glad to hear many of you express interest in continuing to work for change, because as President-Elect Obama makes clear on his new website, change.gov, he still needs our help. I'm hoping we can use this forum to begin a discussion of how we can further effect change in our own community and beyond. One idea I'd like to suggest is an UlsterCorps, sort of a local PeaceCorps, to facilitate community service here in Ulster County. I know many of you already volunteer your time regularly, and I would love you suggestions on specific projects and programs to help out with, and how we can motivate others to get & stay involved. Perhaps we could coordinate Service Saturdays working with different organizations each week, or a Thanksgiving Day Drive for Change/ Meals on Wheels to spread the joy & gratitude we are all feeling??

Lets get to work - small efforts can lead to big change

I'm encouraged to hear Barack Obama remind us that we are now just beginning the work we need to do. Talking to people over the past several months in my community, I sense a willingness and readiness to volunteer and serve that I've not seen before. Undoubtedly, Barack Obama's inspiring words are behind this change.

Now is the time to harness that energy and start organizing grassroots volunteerism. The "events" need to start now. If we all donate our time and talents for even 2 hours, imagine what we could do to rebuild our infrastructure ourselves! 2 hours of time x the number of Americans equals a lot of free labor to put back into our economy. The sense of teamwork and pride we will have will be reflected internationally and will help to improve our international image.

There have to be multitudes of places and ways we can all give back and I fear that if we don't outline those ways and places and harness the energy Barack has stirred up that we will all get back to our "too busy" lives and forget that we all play a role in making America great. It is easy to think "I don't have time to give a year of my life" to the Americorps or other groups. I propose that it doesn't need to be a whole year. It can be a few hours doing a part of a project that one of our "whole year" volunteers heads up.

I want to be a part of this kind of change. I want to help organize it. I can certainly give MY 2 hours worth. Is there anyone out there that is ready too? Who do we call? How do we start?

Lets get a list of simple projects and events people can host to organize some volunteerism and some giving back. We'll need a simple how to guide for each one to help people get started.

Here is a start:

Roadway clean up - supplies can be obtained from the DMV I believe
Volunteer to tutor students
For the financial types: Set up a free "financial advice"/how to consolidate debt seminar

My stomach was in knots.

I paced.

I smoked too many cigarettes.

Drank too much caffeinated tea.

In short, I was a mess.

I thought about those undecided voters I had written about to 40 people & wondered could they take O down?

When Niki Sutton asked us to call people in Nevada & Colorado, I couldn't do it. I would not have been able to form a sentence.

I flipped channel faster than a guy & for the first time couldn't even laugh when Jon Stewart's special came on.

Invitations to parties & bars were ignored because how do you show up to a party with your desk, map, cigarettes, tea, bananas, red & blue pen, kleenex box & bottle of water? Ha!

When Obama was declared the winner I wept.

I thought McCain gave a very dignified speech. I hope Mrs. Palin won't be seen or heard from in a long time. The lies she repeated over & over about Obama were disgraceful.

When Obama came on stage I knew there were people all over the world who were thinking "finally, America has come to her senses."

Humble as ever, our new President stated his case. He cannot do this alone my friends. Every single day we have to reach out to people who have less than us, who need our help, our voice, our passion.

Not just college students so they can go to college but every single one of us needs to volunteer our time.

Pick your passion. Google volunteers if you don't know what you want to do - but do something.

We have the chance to make America war-free, debt-free & poor-free.

A Democratic Revolution in America

We shed blood, sweat and tears over the last weeks leading up to this election. I volunteered in New Hampshire a total of 9 days and made over 1200 calls for the Obama campaign from my home. I made 300 or so phone calls for the campaign on behalf of other organizations supporting the changes that I felt were essential for the country. We donated money and time. I put my practice of medicine and my family life on hold for this election. I met countless others who did much more than I.

But before the presidential campaign I had the opportunity of getting to know Barack Obama. He tells us about his upbringing and family values of hard work, and eternal optimism. He reads out loud his story in Dreams from my Father. His resonant voice and choice of words and imitation of people’s accents make the story come to life. He tells us about begging lepers who would knock on his home’s front door in Indonesia. He tells us story of how he got the scar on his arm.

I read about his political career in The Audacity of Hope. He won his seat in the Illinois state senate and later the US Senate by running a campaign based on truth, facts and respect for the opposition. He shares his ideals and ideas of community, fairness, faith and citizenship. He tells us about his first private jet flight as a senator. He tells us that his first kiss with Michelle tastes of chocolate.

He becomes the voice for our frustrations and carries our voice from the depths of America. He becomes the voice for all of us who want a better America. One without racism, wars of aggression, poverty, bail-outs, torture, rendition, pride, falling bridges in Minnesota, Abu-Ghuraib, failing levees in Louisiana, potholes, oil spills, snubbing the UN, plummeting dollar, terrorist attacks, orange alerts, wire-tapping, collateral damage, Monsanto, crumbling concrete, Enron, black outs in New York, bigotry, melting icecaps, Guantanamo, killing civilians, atomic bombs, propped up dictators, politics of hate and fear, Halliburton, outsourcing, flag covered coffins, endless consumption and stolen presidential elections.

He becomes a voice for the best in America. A country of justice, apple pie, equality, liberty, due process, Thanksgiving Day, movies, churches, innocent until proven guilty, Habitat for Humanity, telephones, Apollo 11, tractors, fortune cookies, “In God we Trust”, firefighters, jazz, diversity, airplanes, green cards, America’s Second Harvest, innovation, ice-cream cones, civil rights, baseball, state troopers, synagogues, green collar jobs, model T Fords, light bulbs, polio vaccines, mosques, Hershey’s, NIH grants, national parks, Google, temples, industry, rock n’ roll, Harley-Davidsons and pow wows.

Like powerful leaders of the past, he shows how active and peaceful resistance can take the form of a campaign. He proves to us that democracy can work. His experience and leadership provides the impetus. He showed us the way democracy works. Troops of people showed up in phone banks, and swing state offices. We shed sweat in the heat of the summer, walking, running, jogging and knocking on doors to discuss our nation’s issues. We broke out in cold sweat in unfamiliar labyrinthine apartment complexes with creaking stairs that smell of rot and decay. We shed tears when Obama gives his acceptance speech at the Democratic Convention. He did so in front of a crowd of 100,000. We shed blood from the paper cuts. Hundreds of flyers, canvassing papers, maps and driving directions, freshly off the printers, cut our fingers: a paper cut that will not stop as you flip canvassing papers and phone call lists. But enough blood to stain the white pages of names of fellow Americans. And yes we shed a drop of blood in a bloodless revolution: a change so profound and deep and wide that the world takes notice. And once again we start a new path in the America for which we stand: one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

It's all over... almost

In just a few hours, Americans will have made their choice, Barack Obama or John McCain. This isn't the time to spin Obama, this is a time to be thankful for the time spent here with many volunteers trying their best to make their country a better place.

My girlfriend and I spent 4 days making calls, entering voter data, picketing in front of a voting place and going door to door to get people to vote for Obama. Many things we saw don't exist in Quebec or in Canada; some would be outright illegal in our system. Some other campaign methods are identical, just adapted for a longer ballot and for a larger population. We learned a lot and will grow from this experience.

Special thanks go to Dave Hendrie in the Manchester, NH office for helping organize our coming here and to the Schroeders for welcoming us in their home. Many thanks also go to the Obama team managers that guided us through the rules of US politics and tought us the work that needed doing.

It's Election Day

New Mexico, the polls are now open. It's a great day to elect Barack Obama President and Joe Biden Vice President.

All of the hard work and the long days come down to today.

It's up to us to finish what we've started.

But first, we need everyone to VOTE, and then we need everyone to VOLUNTEER.

Here are some tips to help you make sure Election Day goes smoothly:

* The polls are open from 7:00AM to 7:00PM. If you are in line by 7:00PM, it's your right to vote.

* If you have not received your absentee ballot, you can get another ballot at your polling place on Tuesday, November 4th.

* If you registered to vote by mail for the first time and didn't include ID, you must bring ID with you to the polls. The address on your ID does not need to match your registration address.

* You may be asked to remove or cover any campaign gear (Obama T-shirts, buttons, etc.) that you wear to the polls. As long as you comply, you still have the right to vote.

Moms-

This has been a long journey from that cold day in Springfield almost 2 years ago when Barack Obama announced his candidacy. Are you feeling the weight of the moment like tomorrow is graduation day for your child or grandchild? Mix of pride, excitement, and worry. All the hopes and dreams and hard work is coming to a defining moment in the journey of life. After the ceremony and party the next chapter, full of promise and support, will begin.

This weekend from coast to coast Moms and our families did our part. Holding rallies (see pictures from the various ones here- http://www.obama-mamas.com/), making phone calls, knocking on doors, reminding our family and neighbors to vote, dropping food and supplies off at the local office, leading getting out the vote activities, and some even pray.

But it is not over yet. We still need to get through the day.

Hope + Action = CHANGE

Time to dig deep to find that energy we have reserved for special times. Time to use your voice - VOTE and don't stop there.

On Sunday, I volunteered to call people in an attempt to help get out the vote. First time I ever volunteered for a political cause, if you don't count my short stint as a Young Democrat. Admittedly, I did not do much back then. Prompted by my work in Head Start and in community mental health, I had assumed that other Dems were as dedicated to caring for their neighbors as I was and as the platform(s) promote, and boy was I wrong. Never had I experienced such open, mean-spiritedness --directed not only at opponents, but also at other Dems. One or two of the other folks in the group were cool, but I still decided I hated politics there and then (after 3 - 5 meetings). Thereafter, while I kept myself informed and voted, I did not participate otherwise. Until Barack's speech on race, that is.

After that speech, I gave money to a political candidate for the first time. And then I gave again. Finally, I phoned people in Missouri this past Sunday to help get out the vote.

What a beautiful day!! I woke up this morning wanting to sleep all day but I remembered that I signed up to volunteer with Barack Obama's campaign. Damn I thought as I lay quietly in my warm bed, "I gotta get up!!" My friends and family know I love Barack Obama. This year I have dedicated a lot of time to the campaign for change. I have made hundreds of phone calls enlisting people to volunteer for the campaign, assisted organizers, set up registration drives, and supporting fellow volunteers. I am dedicated because I believe we all have to be involved in the experiment of democracy. I put on my new AFT Obama shirt with my blue jeans and my pumas and ran out of the house.

At 10:15 I arrived at the campaign office to volunteer. I was quickly directed to go to the staging location three miles away. I was a little upset about it because I wanted to walk around in my neighborhood. I was assigned to another area on the Eastside. I got to the office and introduced myself to KiamBo and Matt then I quickly made phone calls. I made calls to voters to remind them to get out to vote on Tuesday, November 4. At 12:30 I canvassed voters with a partner (Sheila a Detroit teacher). We walked around for about three hours meeting some really nice people in the Mack and Hurlbut, Bewick area. For Detroiters Mack and Bewick is the epitome of bad neighborhoods. I will have to admit this was the first time I was ever in this area but it was just fine at 1:00 in the afternoon. Everyone was so nice. In between the vacant and raggedy homes were people who cared about their homes and families. At 4 we finally returned to the staging location to turn in our canvassing sheets.

I have been working with the campaign since May and I have met some wonderful people. From the organizers in the office on Martin Luther King Blvd to the newer offices that have been opened throughout the city everyone has been welcoming and friendly. I have to admit that it was really hard in the beginning having to work with different people every week. I continued to sign up volunteers and donate to the campaign. I did this all for the cause. I thought about how the civil rights movements mobilized without the tools that we have today. I could literally sit in my home and make phone calls for my candidate. I am proud of everyone who dedicated their time to the campaign. You were willing to give a piece of your life to a greater cause, your country.

There are a lot of things that I love about this campaign. The most important thing is how organized these people seem. It is amazing what you can do with computers now. The small investment of programs, networking, and communication has made this campaign the most efficient campaign in history.

I dedicated my Saturday walking around my neighborhood. I was able to see my neighbors and my community up close. I was proud to walk to Obama and I will continue to do whatever is needed to help the world I live in. I am excited about Tuesday and I cannot wait until we elect the new president BARACK OBAMA.

The First Time

In this election season, I have encountered many firsts. These were all firsts because in the 2004 election - the first election I was old enough to participate in - I didn't volunteer at all. I lived in Michigan and was a student at the time so I rationalized that it was unlikely the Kerry campaign needed my help - and in truth, it didn't, in Michigan at least. Michigan went blue as it has every time since 1992. Sure, I was in school and didn't have much time or money to travel out of state to campaign. Of course, we all know what happened in Ohio, just south of the Michigan border. Following the debacle that cost this country four more years of inept leadership, I vowed I would not sit on the sidelines again.

The 2004 election - and the Democrats’ failure at the polls - inspired me to drop my landscape architecture major and switch to international studies. That move led me to transfer to American University in Washington, D.C., to finish my degree in the international political capital. Since then, I’ve been working at a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to international peace through education but I’ve never lost sight of my goal: to make sure 2004 doesn’t happen again.

So, when I realized Virginia had become a battleground state, I knew what I had to do. I wasn’t going to let time, money or distance stand in my way of helping to put a Democrat in the White House. What cemented my determination was Barack Obama – his vision, his passion and his integrity. I knew that if we couldn’t end the chaos of American leadership with a candidate like Mr. Obama, we had little hope for that end.

The first of my firsts was committing to the Obama campaign and signing up on the website. After that, it was just a matter of showing up to volunteer.

This was the first time I participated in a political campaign.

This was the first time I made a cold call to a voter.

This was the first time I registered a new voter.

This was the first time I knocked on a stranger's door to spread the message.

This was the first time I was yelled at for calling someone's home.

This was the first time I had a door slammed in my face.

This was the first time I convinced someone to vote for my candidate.

This was the first time I did my civic duty and the first opportunity I've had to serve my country.

This was the first time but it will not be the last time I give my all to support a leader I believe in. Without the participation of volunteers, politics loses its impact. If no one cares who the leader is, then what’s the point of democracy? We were lucky enough to have an amazing candidate this year and he has the ability to make a real difference for this country. After all, he has already inspired millions like myself to donate our time and money toward this effort. Imagine what he can do as President of the United States.

The mass volunteer turnout this year has convinced me that we are going to win in Virginia and we are going to win this election. Come Tuesday night, we will be on the right path to redemption and we will all own a piece of that victory.

While this is only the second time I’ve voted, this is the first time I’ve voted for someone I truly believe in.

I believe in a brighter future. I believe in Barack Obama.

I'm voting formally

Back in the early 1960's when I was a young boy, I saw images of freedom riders; young men and women, riding buses to Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and yes, Florida. These heros, men and women, black and white, came to the South to stand up for justice and sometimes to sit in. Their heroic efforts changed our country and society forever. When you look at those old photos from back in the day, you'll notice that many of those young men and women came to the protest actions dressed formally.

Tomorrow, it's looking increasingly hopeful that we will elect a new president and he will be a sure enough multicultural/multiracial man with a African father and a Midwestern mother. It's the most significant public event of my 58 years on Planet Earth.

To mark this occasion and to honor the brave heros of the early 60's, I'm wearing my best (OK, my only) suit and tie when I go to vote tomorrow. I hope some of you will join me in marking this life changing event.

I know everyone is busy, has other things to do, has work, and is tired. But - there will be thousands of other days to work, thousands of other days to sleep, thousands of other days to run errands. This is our only day to make sure Barack Obama becomes president and if we win this election I truly believe each of those thousands of other days will be better.

That is why I am asking you to take off Election Day and help ensure that we elect Barack Obama our next president.

In twenty years you will not be thinking I sure am glad I slept those extra few hours or I am glad I saved my vacation or sick day. But I guarantee you that you will be proud for the rest of your life to have been part of the Obama Campaign on Election Day 2008.

I woke up early and watched coverage of Senator Obama's weekend rallies-AWESOME! The mood of the people contrasted sharply with that of the people shown at the other candidate's events. I think that those good folks at our rallies felt what I've felt lately-a sense that something's coming, something good (pardon me if I break into a show tune!) It's coming folks! But, we have some work to do between now and tomorrow night. After phonedbanking over the weekend, I'm surprised that there are still undecided voters out there! Let's get busy, or "git 'er done" as my Dad used to say. Before you head off to work or class this morning, take a moment and decide how you can help make a difference. On-line phonebanking is available and they are already calling to Virginia, North Carolina and other states. Or, head down to your local Obama office and find out what you can do to help. Saturday, November 1: three days before election day. We wanted to do something. So we and our two small girls spent the afternoon going door-to-door to support the Obama campaign.

Why are we such strong Obama supporters? Its hard to sum up, but here’s a try. The past eight years have been huge for us. We got married. Bought our first house. Had a baby. Had a second baby. Bought our next house.

But some developments have been much less happy. We were distraught to see our leaders invade Iraq—a diversion from important post-9/11 work that’
s been so expensive in lives and dollars. Millionaires got enormous tax breaks while the rest of us fretted over shrinking wages and plummeting retirement accounts. Oil and insurance companies enjoyed corporate welfare and record profits while we paid insane prices for their products.

Meanwhile, the administration chipped away at the Constitution time after time in pursuit of expanded power.

We are sad that our young daughters will bear the burden of failed leadership, rampant spending, and unnecessary war...yet, we are hopeful. In Barack Obama, we see a chance at a dramatically new direction. We want intelligence, thoughtfulness, and integrity in the White House. Obama represents a once-in-a-generation leader—an FDR, or JFK, or MLK for our time.

As we knocked on doors, we met all kinds of people...black, white, young, old, even a few naturalized immigrants from Cuba. We even met some registered Republicans who are voting Obama and wanted to tell us why. (We were happy to listen.) Most importantly, we reminded everyone to vote.

The phone lines were full and the Democrats were donating by using their cell phones in Flagstaff today. We're got some great literature to get out to Democratic voters and need more walkers on Sunday and Monday to do it. Come on down to 4 S. San Francisco Sunday!

Examples of responses to calls I made today:

"Is the election <b>this</b> Tuesday? Where do I go? (The answer was on the piece of paper in front of me!)"

Is Barak Obama a Democrat? (answer: Yes) "Go Barak!"

"I'm intimidated by all those propositions? Answer: The party recommends a no vote on all but the last one on the list. Response: Thanks, I'll go vote!"

"I'm so glad you called, I was just going to try to go on line to find my polling place!"

These calls are easy to make. People are glad to get them. We are not calling Republicans -- unless it's a mistake on our list and then we say "Have a good day," and hang up on them.

Come down and help Barak win!

Just got back from walking the suburbs and downtown Livingston and I have to say I am glad I did it. I am shy about these things, but I did it because I believe that in doing it I am helping to preserve our democracy.

It is way beyond party lines, or "I hope my candidate wins". We are fighting to keep our country alive.

Wherever you are in America, take it from me, it is worthwhile (and not that hard) to do something to help get out the vote for Obama-Biden. A few hours do help, and you will find if you visit your local campaign office you will get tons of support and knowledge from the campaign workers and your neighbors–millions of ordinary citizens of all ages and walks of life–who are giving up hours and days to do this wonderful and rewarding work.

I've also changed my answering machine message to a voting and volunteering reminder and I am stopping to chat with everyone I se, be it a neighbor, acquantance, or friend, to be sure that they keep the spirit of Change We Need alive, right up until the polls close. I also just dug deep to make another modest donation to Obama-Biden.

And a special shout out to my sister in Pennsylvania who has been so generous with her time and money in this campaign to save our country.

Three days left. My girlfriend and I got to Manchester, NH yesterday. This place is rocking and everyone is very welcoming. There is tons of work to be done and fortunately, tons of people to do it.

There's no time to waste anymore, people need to at least know that their first duty is to get out and vote. We just hope they'll be voting for Obama.

Don't get scared by the opponent's scare tactics, they will try everything and anything to prevent victory.

Last Day of Early Voting

Today is the last day of early voting here in Reno. Our effort today was mainly to find folks that hadn't yet voted early and try to get them to head out before the deadline.

Thousands of people have voted early here in Washoe County. The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting that, "As of Wednesday night, 78,403 voters had cast ballots in Washoe County — including 35,051 Democrats and 26,913 Republicans."

I'd like to think that we had some effect on those numbers over the past week. There is actually evidence that canvassing does get people to the polls. I've seen the numbers from Sparks and they're very encouraging. Particularly when we're calling on empty houses -- or worse yet, the ones where people are home but don't answer (I can see you! Just answer the door!).

One Word Sums Up the Mood Right Now

You want one word to sum up the mood among Obamacans today? Don't look for it in Webster's--look in Weinreich, the Yiddish dictionary: You've got shpilkes, everybody -- plain and simple.

Shpilkes (pronounced: SHPILL-kuhz) is a case of nerves + excitement + anticipation that knows no bounds. No English word even comes close. 'Pins and needles' and 'sitting on tenterhooks' are poor second cousins to real shpilkes (the kind we have now).

Okay, you admit you've got shpilkes--the first step in any self-help campaign. What do you do about 'em?

The more energy you spend for the Obama-Biden Campaign, the less energy you'll have for those shpilkes.

So, get out there and volunteer -- one last time!

Volunteer Fatigue - Election 2008

My house is a mess, I’m out of underwear, my hair is in desperate need of professional styling and my eyebrows resemble two fuzzy caterpillars. No time for laundry, tweezing or hair appointments. At least not until after Tuesday.

I’m tired. I want the election to be over already. I’m tired of canvassing and blogging and entering data. I’m tired of following the polls and listening to pundits. I’m tired of Election 2008.

So I had to sit myself down for a pep talk. “Self,” I said. “Get over it. You think you’re tired? How about our candidates jetting all over the country, giving interviews between rallies, and keeping up on current issues and problems that are morphing moment to moment. You (and we all) cannot afford to rest just yet. Yes, Obama/Biden are leading in a number of polls. That and four bucks will get you a latte. It ain’t over til it’s over.” (No, I’m not going to sing, so don’t ask.)

I’m an entrepreneur - which is slang for works all the time and can never hide from the boss. And I’ll admit that my business is suffering a bit from the time I’m devoting to this campaign. But I believe I and my little business, and we all, will suffer a great deal more if we don’t make this election a top priority. So I’ll drink some more coffee, pin on my Obama buttons, and go out to work for Change that I believe in - Change that we sorely and desperately need.

And on November 5th (hopefully after we’ve had occasion to celebrate long into the night of the 4th), I’ll do laundry, clean house, and work on my appearance. After I sleep about 16 hours. Join me in working our hardest until then to get Barack Obama and Joe Biden in the White House. Volunteer, make a donation, write a blog, talk to your neighbors and friends. Change is coming - pass it on.

Yes We Have, Yes We Did, And Yes We Can Again!

Let me start off by saying — this is about us.

This campaign is not about Senator Barack Obama. This campaign is not about Senator John McCain. This campaign is not even about Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Joe Biden, or even Governor Sarah Palin.

No, this campaign is, has always been, and always will be about US.

This campaign is about us because whoever is chosen to be the next President of the United States of America is direct reflection upon us as American citizens, as a nation.

I say all of this to remind people that we are all a part of this choice, whether or not we vote in November 2008.

I want people to remember that it is sooo important to talk but it is much more important to take action. Action bodes movement in the direction that may actually end up in change that leaves an impact upon other people’s lives.

In light of the first debate between the two presidential nominees, I want to stress how important it is to take action right now, each and every single one of us.

I am an avid supporter of Senator Barack Obama, so the list of action points that I have listed below are to support Senator Barack Obama.

Governor Howard Dean rallies students at UNH

Governor Howard Dean returned to the great state of New Hampshire today to rally students at UNH – Durham. UNH – Durham is the largest university in the state of New Hampshire, so the student population has the potential to play a deciding factor in this upcoming election. With early voting over, students in New Hampshire can still register and vote on Election Day through same day registration. Governor Dean encouraged all the students in attendance to make their voice heard by showing up and registering to vote.

Also appearing at the event were two young women who recently graduated from college themselves – Molly Shaheen (Jeanne Shaheen’s daughter) and Kathleen Shea-Porter (Carol Shea-Porter’s daughter). Governor Dean urged students to not just vote for Senator Obama, but to vote for the whole Democratic ticket, all the way down including former Governor Shaheen and Congresswoman Shea-Porter. Barack will need help as President, and we need to keep New Hampshire blue to give him the Senators and Congressmen he will need to get our country back on track.

Dean told the students assembled that they were taking part in a historic election – one that will witness a passing of the torch -

In many ways this election is similar to the 1960 election between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Kennedy was running on a promise of hope and change while Nixon was running as the status quo…and we all know what happened in that election and Kennedy’s historic inauguration.

Registration is over, canvassing is over, absentee ballots handed out, and campaigning continues. With only five days left it is really crucial that everyone registered to vote does, and that everyone who is still unsure of which candidate they are backing makes the correct choice. A vote for Obama is a vote for the change we so desperately need. Obama represents your average American- middle class. His policies help the average person, not just the large business that are already well off. His policies will provide tax cuts to the working family by three times more than McCain's policies, make it possible to start and maintain a small business. With Obama health coverage wont be a problem, it will be guaranteed for every American, unlike McCain's plan which will impose a high tax on the working class family's coverage. But I don't need to rant off policies, if you're reading this hopefully you already back Obama.
As a teenager I can't vote, I need you to vote for me. Vote for the right person, they effect not only you but the next generation. I don't want to have to face bringing up a family and working in an economy that is shot, I don't want to have to struggle my way into the working class, I would love a stable economy, affordable health care, and a good educational system in place.

I just want to remind everyone if you can vote, VOTE. If you know some one who can vote, make them VOTE. If you can volunteer to drive people to polls, or escort them if they need help. If you live in an urban area remind people on the subway that they can vote.

Days before the most important election in genearations of Americans, it has been made known to me...that I will not be able to vote. Unregistered and without recourse, my desire for change is no more than a moot meandering thought.

How can I, a young American let this symbolic act that defines our democracy esacape me?

How can I, a woman suffer through the shame of invisibility in this time where my presence is called upon?

How can I, a Black American Woman, explain away the lack of action when much marching, crying, dying has occured just so that I can enact my freedom of CHOICE?

I can't...I cannot explain it.

There are 'contributing factors'. There always will be. But knowing for certain that Change MUST be created, I failed in making sure I could do my part in the creation.

So after I hummed the' Star-Bangled Banner'to myself to restore my wilted inner Americana...and recitedly repeated the lyrics of 'We Shall Overcome' like the lines of my Easter morning Sunday speech, I made a decision-That there is SOMETHING that I can do! There must be!

And I came to Barack Obama's website and signed up to Volunteer to get OTHERS who are registered to Vote out into the polling stations and making the right choice for our Country.

If not me..than my neighbor.

if not me...than my brother, sister, fellow American.

I will make up for my own misstep in making sure that my voice is heard.

So since in the polls I'll be silent...I'll make sure that I have a squadron of fellowmen speaking for me!

Don't Let Up

I loved the Obamercial; it was so well-produced and narrated. Of course, it's propaganda, but I think it perfectly addressed the objections of undecided voters and people that have been distracted by the spiteful blubbering of the GOP candidates.

I was very happy that there was absolutely no mudslinging directed at McCain and Palin. I consistently hear creative ideas and solutions from Obama and Biden, where it seems McPalin have nothing left but lies, finger-pointing and exaggeration.

Last week, I signed up to take Nov. 4th off to help the effort in my home state of Washington. I've never done that before and was dreading it a bit, to be truthful, as I dislike when people call or knock on my door.

There's so much at stake, though, so I've donated again and am now looking forward to getting out and talking to people.

Day Five: Getting It in Somersett

Today was awesome. We called on approximately 90 people. Our contact rate was very high and we had a lot of positive interaction with NV voters.

We were walking the Somersett area which is much more affluent than the Sparks areas. With the exception of three people, everyone I spoke with had already voted (Nevada has early voting through Friday October 31) for Barack Obama and most had also voted for the Democratic candidate Jill Derby for congress. One guy I caught on the way out of the house; he was heading to the early vote location to vote for Obama!

Two interesting interactions that stand out today. Both involved Republicans and both were inspiring...

Biden in Melbourne

The turnout was amazing at the Biden Rally tonight! We overflowed the parking accomodations -so those of us on volunteer duty were turning away cars and having them park over at BCC and along the road! I am so proud of you all! We are really turning the tides here...

We [my husband and 2 children along with myself] carried our signs from the event area out to the road where the McCain supporters were protesting and shouting at cars as they entered the event. We wanted to welcome our supporters and offset all that venom...

My heart sank as I listened to some of the ugly, hateful, and just plain IGNORANT things these people had to say out there. We bolstered the children so they might be prepared - and I paid close attention to their comfort levels because the children were there to support their hope for their future - not to engage in spiteful exchanges of words with strangers.

These 'grown ups' - who claim to belong to some "moral majority" - were not content to hold their signs and wave at cars - but insisted on yelling about 'baby killers' - telling my children that all the jobs would be gone here if our candidate won... rambling about how Obamas plan to level out the taxes so the rich folks and multimillion dollar coprorations get to pay percentages that are more like the percentages that I actually pay - is marxism [did she mean 'socialism'?].

Socialism - "Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy."

Capitalism: "an economic system in which investment in and ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of wealth is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations"

Which does this Wall Street bail out fit into?

Concerned about how the kids were taking it - I checked with them both regularly to make sure they were not scared - only to find my son (age 12) smiling ear to ear - and raising his voice even higher - calling out 'Yes We Can!' and my daughter (age 16) more resolved than ever that there must be a serious connection between low IQ and McCain supporters - that they are obviously not thinking a whole lot and may just be consuming what is being fed to them on their TV sets or in their churches. I had to struggle with my own disgust as I reminded them not to judge all the McCain supporters by the actions of these few...

I had to chuckle at the thought that maybe they mistook my family and me for members of that elite 'middle class' the republicans seem to believe exists out there making $250,000 / year. LOL.

I am not 'Joe the plumber'. Actually, the last time I called him, his rates were far too high for me - he wanted over $800 for the work I needed done, so I went to Home Depot and fixed the problem on my own for the cost of the $80 part and about 3 hours of my own time :) Did they actually perceive that 'people like us' might suddenly see things 'their way' if they just shouted misinforation in our faces loudly enough? It was so ridiculous that one adult out there actually even assaulted my daughter's hair style when they ran out of other material... I was glad when they left shortly after that.

I am so confident that we have the numbers to win here and feel it is more important than ever to win this...and despite what all the ignorant, hateful, prejudiced nay-sayers might want to believe, our numbers cannot be ascribed to any single demographic or socioeconomic group.

I saw people of all skin colors.
I saw men, women, and children in the cars entering that event.
I saw single people, heterosexual couples, homosexual couples, families in the line waiting
I saw beat up cars with taped up windows - AND I saw some BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus in that parking lot of Obama supporters.
I saw elderly people - middle aged folks - teens - and young children in that crowd.
I saw a lot of diversity among the staff, volunteers, and guests.

There is only one singular unification point that we - the diverse Americans that make up the Obama Biden support base - can be justly accused of; there is one trait we do all share:

Six Days Two Hours Thirteen Minutes

As I write this there are 6 days, 2 hours and 13 minutes remaining until election day. Things are starting to heat up here in Reno (literally and metaphorically). My mother and I have been canvassing various areas around Reno for the past four days and will continue through the election.

We had a full afternoon of canvassing up in Sun Valley. Very rewarding today. We started off at the Victorian Station field office again. This time we arrived just in time for the briefing. We were told that Sun Valley might have some stray dogs roaming around and learned how to use the clip board as a defense mechanism (email me and I'll fill you in).

Probably the most interesting part of canvassing today was the fact that we ran into three guys doing the same thing for McCain and some local Republicans. We literally crossed paths with them at one point with them waiting for us to leave one house so they could go up after us. I tried to keep it positive (some brotherhood in canvassing maybe?) and commented on what a nice day we were having. They seemed mildly annoyed and went about their business.

One very odd thing though, they had Alberta plates on the GIANT SUV they were driving. I didn't think much of it then but I've subsequently heard that there was another Canadians for McCain sighting earlier in the week. Maybe John McCain can't inspire Americans but he's got the secret sauce for the Canadians? Strange indeed.

Charles Meets Barack

After Charles met Senator Obama on Sunday before the historic rally in Denver, he said it was one of the most memorable experiences of his life.

That's saying something, as Charles was born in 1922.

He's seen the Great Depression, a world war, served in the Korean War, and has volunteered for campaigns since Franklin D. Roosevelt, but it's the energy of this campaign that has excited this lifelong Democrat more than any others.

He sees similarities between Barack and the last candidate he volunteered for: Bill Clinton.

"I like anyone who's come from a hard life because they understand people that are having a hard life. Barack Obama, like President Clinton, they really understand the people and lives we're going through with."

Charles volunteers in our Boulder office almost every day, greeting people at the door making sure they sign in, and always has a story to tell folks with an open ear.

I'm writing my story in the form of a letter to Barack Obama, fully acknowledging that he will never read it. I only hope that at least one campaign worker will take it to heart and give himself or herselfa pat on the back.

        Dear Barack,
        Less than one week ago I was informed that I would have to take a week long business trip abroad, causing me to be absent from the polls on Nov. 4th. I came home and discussed the situation with my wife. Neither of us knew the protocol for absentee voting and with less than a week to figure it out and obtain a ballot, we thought that it would be impossible to accomplish. Our lives are very busy and although voting is important, it takes a back seat to our kids, education and work. As we finished our discussion we heard a knock on the door (no joke, the second we finished our discussion there was a man at our door). We tried to ignore the probable solicitation but my curiosity got the best of me. I opened the door to find one of your ground volunteers standing on my front porch.
After asking if I had decided on a candidate and tallying his sheet, he asked if I needed an absentee ballot application. I SURE DID!!! He gave me two applications, instructions on how to fill it out, a business card and directions to the local Obama HQ. I am happy to say that I just completed my absentee ballot and proudly declared my vote for you.
The point of this story is that although you won my vote with your inspiring message and unwavering determination to fight for the middle cllass, it was your volunteers and ground campaign that brought my vote to fruition. I hope that regardless of the outcome of this election, you can take the time to thank your volunteers for their diligence and determination. My story is proof that without these good people, the final tally in Michigan would be one less vote for Barack Obama.

My mom housed a couple of his volunteers and has been volunteering for the campaign as the German head of Democrats Abroad and from her other home in Washington, DC.

Obama will be in Raleigh tomorrow, where I live. How cool would it be to show Obama shaking my hand, taken an ocean away from where this was shot? We are two generations of Obama Mamas!

North Carolina is a battleground state. This could help on the publicity front. I write for three blogs and would love to cover this story through Twitter and my blogs. I bet you this is a rare opportunity to capture two moms, two generations, an ocean away stumping for Obama.

My Argument for Activism

Responding to a mixed crowd of folks, some of whom think that Senator Obama’s already sealed the presidency, he cautioned them to remain vigilant in their involvement. In the same crowd, he also spoke to those whose faith is dwindling that a democracy might actually represent them. To these people, he asked them to hold out hope that a better future was just around the corner. During this speech in Canton, Ohio, Senator Obama closed with the following words:

"Don't believe for a second this election is over ... We have to work like our future depends on it in this last week, because it does … And if in this last week, you will knock on some doors for me, and make some calls for me, and talk to your neighbors, and convince your friends; if you will stand with me, and fight with me, and give me your vote, then I promise you this—we will not just win Ohio, we will not just win this election, but together, we will change this country and we will change the world."

If you’re anything like me, every presidential election (primary or general) you’ve voted in has been a disappointment. During the last eight years, we’ve seen outright lies and criminal acts fly in the face of democracy. Even during this presidential race, we’ve seen a gutter news reporting, with a spin cycle that is suspiciously shorter for a candidate whose choices have been irresponsible, and now, outright offensive. No doubt you’re cynical.

No doubt, you’re saying, “What more do you want from me? I vote.” Or, unsurprisingly, you may feel helpless. You might feel that your actions, as one person, won’t really make a difference.

But I promise you they will: Every day, an average person—not an expert and maybe even a little shy—walks timidly into their local Obama headquarters, willing to give just an hour of their time. And it’s not because these people have nothing better to do. It’s not because they necessarily would classify volunteering as “fun,” though it can be.

The reason they show up is because they know that if they don’t try to take back their democracy, no one will do it for them. The reason they show up and volunteer is because they quite literally cannot afford four more years like the last eight.

What I’m asking of you is your time, your "elbow grease." Find the Obama headquarters in your area and volunteer--even for just an hour. We need people to man the phones, knock on doors, drive people to the polls, and run errands for those of us “sequestered” at different staging locations.
Take a friend, if you think it will help the time pass or if you’re too shy to go alone. And buy them a beer, later on, for their trouble.

What I’m asking is that, in this last week, you believe enough in yourself to feel that precisely your efforts can make a difference. I’m asking you to believe me that even an hour of your time could help tip your state blue. I’m asking you to imagine for a moment that if enough folks actually commit to this—everyday, non-expert, slightly introverted, very busy people, just like you—that we will take our democracy back.

I end this plea with two of my favorite quotes, one from my friend Kathryn and one from an exceptionally smart man:

Upon sitting up late one night with a twenty-page paper due the next day and no draft in sight, I put my head on the desk and started to feel sorry for myself. At that moment, Kathryn unceremoniously told me to buck up, saying “You can’t go to grandma’s house all the time.” In other words, sometimes you have to make it all better on your own.

I close with a quote from Albert Einstein, genius, F-math student, and philosopher. I’m going to end this argument for activism the way I always harp on my students not to end papers, using someone else’s words and not their own. Perhaps they’re onto something after all: "The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do harm, but because of those who look on and do nothing. "

Day Three: Sparks Canvassing

As you may know my mother and I have taken off the next several days through the election to come to Reno to get out the vote for Barack Obama. I'm writing a blog post when I can to document our travels, trials, and tribulations.

We mixed it up a bit today and met with Riley at the Victorian Station field office in Sparks to get our marching orders. We took four canvassing packets and head out.

We decided to change our operating methodology at the first location and each take an opposite end of the area. Nice strategy but it works better when both people have the map. Normally it's not a problem because the addresses are all on the voter list and you just follow the street signs. Except there were no street signs here. I managed to locate all of the places but I wasn't exactly efficient.

Volunteering in Colorado

I had the pleasure of volunteering for the Obama campaign in Denver, CO, this weekend. I drove to Englewood, just south of Denver, Friday evening. Saturday and Sunday were full days - knocking on doors, talking to residents, attending training, facilitating the Denver rally. I met many active, energetic, hopeful people - each one of them working ardently to make change in our national political system. Sunday's rally, with near or more than 100,000 people gathered in downtown Denver, was exciting, energizing, and moving. Now back in Salt Lake City, I will continue knocking on doors, supporting local candidates. But, I will also return to the phones, calling the good people of Colorado, sharing my aspirations for our country. I encourage you, too, to give at least a few hours of your time. My trip to Denver was not a sacrifice; the community and movement I discovered there was a gift from those active friends and citizens making change near their home and across the nation.

Biden Rally in Suffolk

This past week-end, my step daughter and I volunteered for the Biden Rally in Suffolk. We helped set up chairs and made posters the night before the Rally then came back early the next morning to volunteer again and ended up in the "cheer leaders" group! It was fun. Our group were to keep the crowd cheering, clapping and waving their arms as we waited for Joe Biden and then as he gave his speech. I heard that it was the first time a candidate from a presidential ticket has ever held a Rally in our city. Joe Biden was a dynamic speaker and actually rather handsome on stage! Paige was surprised when after the speech Senator Biden held a few babies, she didn't know that was an age-long politcian's thing.

Tomorrow Barack Obama is speaking in Norfolk at Harbour Park and guess what!? Yep, Paige and I are volunteering again! We will arrive at 4 p.m. and stay until after the rally which starts at 9:30 p.m. It's gonna be a loooooong but exciting day!

ARE YOU WALKIN THE WALK?

Or are you just talkin the talk?

It is NOT enough to simply repeat views, platforms and political ideals... Obama has called upon us to take responsibility, to stand up and actually take part in rebuilding and restoring America.

Actions speak louder than words. We all need to come together and take an active interest in our government and our country. We all need to do what we are capable of doing to show our love of America. We need to reach out to others of all faiths, races, cultures, incomes and political views. You can judge a society by the way it treats its most vulnerable. We are our brothers keeper. If our brothers and sisters lives are bettered so will our lives be bettered. When our brothers and sisters suffer so do we as a nation. It's not about me... it's not about you! It's about ALL of us!

In essence you and I are America, do our lives and actions reflect the best of America or the very worst?

What can you and I do to better America. Use your strengths, everyone has a strength or gift to offer America!

Don't underestimate the simple act of a smile. You have already experienced the viral effect of your campaigning... A smile, the simple acknowledgement of caring about another is as potent and viral and as the message you bring.

Today a woman asked me for something small. I smiled at the stranger and when I did so we were no longer strangers. I didn't hesitate to give her what she asked for... in fact I gave her more than she had asked for even though my finances are fixed and extremely tight. She was surprised and thankful... we both parted feeling a warmth inside of us, both had smiles on our faces and in our heart. It wasn't about what I gave to her it was about the simple act of helping another.

Giving of oneself to another is the most satisfying experience one can ever hope to feel. It doesn't have to be big, anything you can do for another... even giving something as simple as a smile can make all the difference in someone's day. If we all reflect love for each other by committing simple acts of kindness the world would be a far better place.

During this financial crisis everyone is suffering... You and I can make a difference by seeing the problems around us and doing something about it. By seeing the pain and suffering in others around us and doing something to help... no matter how small of a gesture it may be it DOES make a difference in peoples lives.

I challenge you all to spread love in it's most viral form... A heartfelt smile. And if you are in a position to do so please consider giving even more... Volunteer, visit the aged, visit the veterans in hospitals, look out for your neighbor, help a child or help a family. Give your time, give your heart. Open your eyes and look around for opportunities to help your family, friends, community, and nation.

The needs in our nation are many, see the needs and act upon it!

That is the message and mission of Hope!

When in doubt remember these words! Yes We Can!

Sunday Reno Canvassing

Cavassing today in Reno. We went door to door trying to get people (Obama supporters really) to get out and vote early here in Nevada.

They've got a great early vote system here. You can vote in any of the Scolari's grocery stores and a few other locations. Shop and vote in the same trip!

We knocked on 60+ doors between the two of us and made contact with 20 people. With the exception of one random guy everyone we met was really nice and were all planning on voting for Obama or already had. We even got one woman to volunteer for next weekend! By the way, the campaign is still looking for folks to come out next weekend through the election.

One funny story... I was excited to knock on a door with an Obama sign in the window. A very friendly woman answered and I said, "Saw the Obama signs in the window, just here to make sure you're getting out to vote early." She said, "Those are my husbands signs, I'm not supporting Obama." I smiled and said, "OK then, well please tell your husband to get out and vote early! You can vote whenever you get around to it."

We both shared a laugh and she said goodbye with a "Kudos to you for getting out and volunteering. God bless you." Even the McCain supporters aren't too bad here.
