9. Donate to the Make a Wish Foundation

Presidential Inaugural Address Delivered by President Barack Obama on 20 Jan 2009

My fellow citizens -
I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.
That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.
These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.
Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met.
On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.
On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.
We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.
In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.
For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.
For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.
For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.
Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.
This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.
For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act - not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do.
Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions - who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.
What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.
Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control - and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart - not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.
As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort - even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.
For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.
To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.
To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.
As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment - a moment that will define a generation - it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.
For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.
Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends - hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism - these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.
This is the price and the promise of citizenship.
This is the source of our confidence - the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.
This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed - why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.
So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:
"Let it be told to the future world...that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet it."
America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

We were able to convince my Uncle ( Granny Gobama's son) to vote for Barack Obama! Granny Gobama was so proud... she felt if she couldn't even help convince her own son that this is the chane we need, that it would be difficult for her to convince anybody. But we did it! Vermont '08 Election Dress Code: No Ties, No Tails - Updated

There may be no state in the country considered as “safe” for Barack Obama as the Green Mountain State. It is after all the home of former governor and current Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean. But I wonder what happened over the past two weeks to explain why 538’s state-by-state survey of electoral outcome probabilities slipped Obama’s chances of winning the Green Mountain State from 100% (a unique status it had shared with the District of Columbia) to 99% (with Rhode Island and Hawaii).

I doubt it is related to the size of Obama’s official campaign presence here, currently one full-time staffer embedded in the Vermont Democratic Party campaign office in Burlington. Attendance at recent Obama county organizing meetings in Chittenden and Addison was respectable considering it is mid-summer and the election is 3 months from now. After all, grass roots activists had no difficulty gathering required petition signatures, conducting canvasses, registering new voters, raising funds and mounting visibility long before the official campaign arrived in Vermont just 2 weeks before the March 4 primary. And that effort built a strong foundation for the general election.

No public opinion polls have been published in Vermont since February, but these would probably be a waste of money. Two polls conducted just weeks before the Democratic primary projected Obama beating McCain by margins of 34 and 21 percent. How reliable were those polls? The same polling organizations at the time showed Obama leading Clinton by 24 and 14 percent (Rasmussen 57-33 and Research 2000 53-39). The far less scientific AOL straw poll at the same time showed him with a 20-point lead (60-40), very close to the actual primary results (59.31% to 38.59%). So go figure.

Well, that’s exactly what fivethirtyeight.com has done. They have adjusted the February data to a current projection of 59.7% to 38% for Obama over McCain. Since volatility is not a Vermont voting trait, barring some major development, you can probably bank on 538’s prediction holding on November 4.

While most Vermonters are excited about bringing CHANGE to Washington DC, the same does not necessarily apply to their state capital, Montpelier. This is a very unique election year. Neither of Vermont’s highly popular Senators, Democrat Patrick Leahy nor Independent (democratic socialist) Bernie Sanders, is up for re-election. And Representative Peter Welch, finishing his first term as one of the country’s most effective freshman in Congress, will have no Republican opponent in November, though he will face an anti-war activist in the Democratic primary and a Progressive Party candidate in the general election. So, all attention is on the Governor’s race, with Republican Jim Douglas running for his fourth two-year term against Democratic House Speaker Gaye Symington, with Progressive Party candidate Anthony Pollina as her potential spoiler.

So far, Election 2008 looks to be a bifurcated event that will focus far more resources on the state race than on the national contest. Both Democrats and Republicans have already raised the specter of coattails effects in November. Democratic Party officials talk of Obama drawing enough new voters to the polls to help Symington overcome the State’s tradition of voting for candidates irrespective of party affiliation. Republicans cautiously whisper of a reverse coattail effect, with McCain benefiting from a loyal turnout to re-elect Douglas. These may be prime examples of wishful thinking. It is doubtful that “coattail” is going to become a causative verb in Vermont any time soon. Why? Because the ties that connect these local candidates vertically to their national tickets are nebulous when compared to the strong ties that bind them horizontally to other state party officials.

Top Vermont Democrats like Leahy and Welch certainly boarded the Obama bandwagon early in the primary race. But their party has failed to court Obama’s most active grass roots supporters who are engaged in politics for the first time.

Perhaps more importantly, while most Clinton supporters in Vermont will certainly vote for Obama, it is not clear what role her state campaign chair, former governor Madeleine Kunin, is going to play at the Denver Convention.

UPDATED: She is currntly a leading advocate for an Obama-Clinton "dream ticket", choosing for now to play the yenta. But there are forces within the Democratic Party, like PUMA and the Denver Group, ready to cause havoc at the convention who would be more than happy to seize on "Hillary for VP" as their battle cry, as well as highlighting the party's schism through a roll call vote for President. By late August, Kunin may have to choose between party unity and loyalty to Hillary and her personal cause of promoting women in politics. And that decision ironically could affect both her state party's prospects of electing another female governor as much as the national party's opportunity to elect the first biracial President.

On the Republican side, Governor Douglas knows he is better off distancing himself from his party’s standard bearer. Otherwise, he risks having to defend McCain’s erratic personality and unpopular positions before a skeptical electorate. It will be much easier to present his own narrative of a steady demeanor and record of cautious stewardship. In fact it is his Lieutenant Governor, Brian Dubie, with whom he forms Vermont’s sole surviving Republican “team”, where coattails may help if at all. But this November, it is probably going to be casual Tuesday. And that means “No Ties, No Tails”.

Greetings fellow delegates!

Some of you are undoubtedly new to the delegate role, as I am, but information is trickling in.

1. Congrats to the 110 or so Obama delegates from town causes, who successfully submitted their Statement of Candidacy/Pledge of Support forms, and are now campaigning to become Vermont delegates for Obama to the National Democratic Convention. 2. The goal at the state convention May 24th is to select Vermont's delegation to Denver. Vermont is allocated 10 district-level delegates and 3 district-level alternates. Based on the results of Vermont presidential preference primary on March 4th, those delegates will be awarded as follows: Obama gets six district-level delegates, three males and three females, Clinton gets 4 district-level delegates, two males and two females. Obama gets two alternates, one male and one female, Clinton gets one female alternate.

3. There will be a final delegate training session on Wednesday, May 14th at 6:00pm at 38 Eastwood Drive, So. Burlington.

4. Hopefully, you have received information from Joanne Boyle (who's helping organize the VDP Convention on 5/24). She sent information about development/placement of ads in the program and/or renting of table space at the convention to help promote your delegate candidacy. As I type this post, the word "Community" is in the upper left corner of my blog window. It is something I had hoped to find on this site. And while I find most of the blogs very informative, the discussions and banter in the list-serve messages I receive, have left me wondering.

Can the democratic party come actually together in time to win the White House in November?

We are truly blessed. We have TWO qualified, dedicated public servants in our party looking to lead our nation. We can blog, debate and discuss these candidates freely. We can vote without fear in primaries, caucuses and elections. As imperfect as the process sometime seems, WE have the power to change that, or at least elect people who will.

My friend Dennis, from Kenya, was recently beaten during the post-election riots in his country. He was simply holding a camera at a gathering and was brutalized for it. Maybe his attackers knew he had been secretly smuggling families away from the violence outside their homes, or maybe he was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time.

But WE, my friends, are blessed to live in this country, at this time. WE have the power to come together and ensure a democrat is elected and helps pave the way to "a more perfect union."

Without a doubt, Senator Barack Obama should be the next U.S. President. But I will not stand by and listen to others tarnish his respectable campaign by slandering his worthwhile opponent. Our energy and passion would best be served by redirecting our words and actions toward advocating Senator Obama's positions on the issues and qualifications to be President.

Barack Obama as "Protected Species"

On April 20, 1982, the Vermont House of Representatives passed Resolution H.R. 19 protecting Champ, the legendary lake monster, “from any willful act resulting in death, injury or harassment.” A similar resolution was adopted in the same year by the State Assembly of New York. One theory is that Champ, whose sighting predates the famous Loch Ness monster, is a plesiosaurus, a prehistoric water-dwelling reptile that escaped extinction in Lake Champlain, which lies between Vermont and New York.

Vermont Democrats, who last week voted 59% to 39% to make Barack Obama their party's nominee for President, are now considering a new resolution similarly declaring their candidate a "protected species" to provide him the same legal safeguards as Champ. The fear is that Obama has had his mojo stolen and may be eaten alive by his opponent. And so she would prematurely bring to an end the career of a new breed of politician intent on fundamentally changing Washington.

There is some evidence to support their concerns. After Vermont, Hillary Clinton won primaries in Rhode Island, Texas and Ohio. And the 3AM phone call ad and NAFTA-gate that contributed to her victories are still actively discussed in the media. On top of all that, one of Obama's two top female foreign policy advisors, Samantha Power was forced to resign late last week after she called the former First Lady a "monster".

It is interesting that the comparison of Hillary Clinton to a monster did not come out until after the Vermont primary. But it does raise some questions. Was the former First Lady's decision to move to New York affected in any way by that state's resolution protecting the lake monster? Just asking. It appears Hillary has not suffered "death, injury or harassment" since she migrated to NY; probably pure coincidence. Is Hillary in fact a carnivorous Plesiotsuris (from the Greek plesio and Yiddish tsuris, meaning "similar to trouble") who is taking advantage of the legal protections intended for Champ, whose friendly image serves as mascot of the minor league Lake Monsters baseball team? To quote Hillary: "There is nothing to base that on, as far as I know."

Elsewhere, NY Governor Eliot Spitzer, a super delegate who endorsed Hillary Clinton, announced he may not vote for her in Denver after all.

Bennington Banner Column Mocks Obama and his Message of Change

After a disappointing March 5, I was proud that Vermont voted for Obama and I vowed to do more to help ensure that he becomes the next president of the United States. Saturday morning I opened my weekend paper and there was an anti Obama op-ed. I say anti Obama because it wasn't pro Clinton. It was a mish mash of misrepresentations and Clinton talking points, not that there is much of a difference between misrepresentations and Clinton talking posts. . . I sent the Banner a column that I wrote in response. I wonder if they will print it. Just in case they don't here it is.

I am writing in response to Weiland Ross’ anti-Obama op-ed in the March 8, 2009 weekend edition of the Banner. I agree with Mr. Ross that the primary process in the Democratic Party is in disarray. Where we disagree is that I don’t think you rewrite the rules to the game mid way through because you are losing. The process that enshrines Iowa and New Hampshire with first in the nation status needs to be overhauled. Clinton wants to seat the delegates in Michigan even though Edwards and Obama removed themselves from the ballot and even though 40% of the vote went to uncommitted. Florida presents a more complicated delegate allocation problem. I don’t have an answer for either situation but if you don’t like the delegates selection rules then get active in the party and try to change them. Clinton’s people front-loaded the primary system to give her the nomination, it didn’t work and now they are crying foul.’

Mr. Ross asserts that Clinton has won all the "important" states and therefore she should be our nominee. Really? Howard Dean has set out to rebuild the Democratic Party from the ground up. He has worked hard to create a 50 state strategy rather than use the same old 15 to 17 state strategy that Democrats have used in the past. Obama on the ticket has the potential to turn a few purple states blue. The big state game plan is insulting to all of us from little states and you know what? A Democrat making inroads in to Republican states is a very good thing.

What experience does Hillary have? How has she crossed the Commander in Chief threshold? The truth is she hasn’t. She voted for the Authorization to use Military Force in Iraq. She supported the Kyl/ Lieberman amendment declaring the Iranian Quds force a terrorist group and giving the president the authorization to go to war with Iran. She supports the racist and draconian sentencing disparity for those convicted of possessing crack versus those possessing cocaine. A disparity that the Conservative Roberts court opposes. Senator Clinton voted against a bill (sponsored by Senator Obama) to stop the use of cluster bombs in heavily populated areas. She claims there is a media bias against her campaign and then claims she brought peace to Northern Ireland. She claims that a visit to the Kosovo Macedonian border, with Sinbad and Sheryl Crow, constitute foreign policy experience.

The uplifting appeal of the Obama campaign is only condescending if you don’t believe that this country can be a better place. The Wizard of Oz metaphor can describe the Obama campaign, but not in the way that Mr. Ross implies. The tin man wasn’t given a heart, the lion wasn’t given courage and the scarecrow wasn’t given a brain. They earned these things, because the wizard was just a man. Senator Obama’s greatest achievement is his ability to inspire people to look within themselves for the strength to solve their problems. "Yes We can", is a lot more inclusive than "yes she will." Hope isn’t empty. "In the unlikely story that is America there has never been anything false about hope." Hope brought our ancestors here from distant shores. Hope fuels our aspirations and nourishes our souls. Hope protects us in the face of great fear, and hope looks at the world as it is and insists that despite the great odds, it can be better. We can be better.

"Fascinating and important", eh? Apparently this author failed to consider the fact that heavily African-American Wyoming (wink) might just be bucking the trend. People, white and black (and Hispanic and Asian), move out of cities for a variety of reasons, including crime, pollution, taxes, etc, not just the racial makeup of their neighborhoods. Add to that the Interstate Highway System, which allowed whites who had cars (a higher percentage of them did then blacks) to move out to the suburbs because of these new highways. Apparently Mr. James takes any interruption of a 12 state victory run (mostly by huge margins) as evidence of white rejection of black pride and support of their most viable candidate ever.

I categorically disagree.

Obama got 52% of the White Male vote in VIRGINIA, capital of the Confederacy.

Our country has grown up quite a bit in the past 20 years. The children of the children of the sixties are now parents themselves. The revolution has quietly taken place without anyone noticing until now. The poor, undereducated working class whites (Reagan Democrats) are generally more racist than more affluent, educated whites, but most of the really racist ones vote Republican anyway, not for a Black OR a Woman.

Your choice of the words "Kiss of Death" either is intended to be an attack on Obama's candidacy disguised as a news article or it's just ill-informed and off the mark. Really, just look at lily-white Vermont. Sure did stampede them away from Obama there, eh? Mr. James, please take another look at the issue.

One reason that Clinton might have taken Ohio that cannot be ruled out, and is also perhaps the reason Kerry lost Ohio despite leading in the exit and pre-election polls is that vote fraud and machine problems there are rampant. The political machinery was in the Hillary camp, which makes that stuff much easier to do (it was in the Bush camp in 2004). See BradBlog.com and BlackBoxVoting.org if you don't want to take it from me, but the electoral machinery in Ohio is VERY flawed. One other factor, the weather, was also not weighed heavily in any analysis I've seen but it was atrocious, especially in the heavily black areas in and around Cleveland, where ice coated the roads and made voting extremely difficult.

My main point is that "white flight" has shown VERY little evidence of showing up and suggestions to the contrary seem more like wishful thinking than discussions of fact.

Nice work. You have successfully managed to beat Obama in 3 primaries, after his 11 states. I know it takes hard work to win a state, but please, quit playing it up as if you just won the nomination. I mean, there's no comparison. Obama has won far more states than you, and winning Ohio doesn't make you "America's choice".

What really shocked me was your hints about Obama being your running mate. Guess what: Obama is still winning. Yeah, you have some new momentum, but what does that mean when he has more delegates and states? There isn't much time for a comeback, is there? A look at the results from the March 4 election results on MSNBC.com and CNN.com suggests that Hillary Clinton probably only netted a gain of 7 delegates from Rhode Island, Vermont, Ohio, and Texas. While the results from the Texas caucus are not all in yet, CNN’s Election Center reported that Obama had a 56% to 44% lead with 40% of precincts reporting. So, if we allocate 56% of the Texas caucus delegates to Obama, we get the following results:

Well according to CNN, the results are all in... Barack won Vermont! Hillary won Rhode Island and eeked by in Ohio and Texas!

The truth, however, is that besides the Vermont primary, Barack has won another victory... Barack Obama continues to win on the Battlefield of High Moral Values.

Obama has refused to fall prey to Hillary's tenacious attempts to lure him into her world of mudslinging, false advertising and ALL OUT LIES! I SALUTE YOU BARACK, for taking the high road and not being influenced by the Clinton camp's bad behavior! Barack has maintained that he is "uncomfortable" with retaliating to the type of negative campaigning to which Hillary Clinton has resorted. Nor is Barack comfortable with stooping even lower by diffusing lies about Hillary Clinton to manipulate voters.

As last night saw Barack's first losses after twelve (12) straight primary wins, one can only postulate that Hillary's negative campaigning did take a bit of a (temporary) toll on Barack's momentum. What I do know, is that Barack Obama's REFUSAL to waiver on 'fighting back with negative campaign tactics --even at the possible cost of narrowly losing some of last night's primary states--further speaks to why we MUST do everything in our power to ensure that Barack Obama is our next President of the United States of America.

Hillary's cheap political tactics are temporary, but Barack's strength of character, high moral values and overall consistency are enduring.

I must say that today I am dissapointed. However, it is not with the results of the primaries, but with the rhetoric coming from the Clinton campaign. If the Democratic party wants to re-take the White House in the fall, then winning a few primaries by primarily bashing your opponent on events that are in reality mix-ups, along with commercials using a "red phone" and constantly mentioning it, is outright repulsive. I plead to Barack, to not go negative with this campaign. Continue to do what you do, to inspire us, and make us want to see America turn the page. If you change directions now, then it will be hard for the states ahead to look at this campaign the same way. Believe in yourself and in us, that positivity speaks louder than the negative path.

P.S.

My negative stab at Clinton: You said in your speech tonight that you couldn't have done this without the support of your husband Bill. Where the hell was he? Oh, ok, now I get it...

CNN has projected Obama's win here in Vermont. Yes we can! However, I have a question about the Democratic ballots. Edwards and Kucinich still had names on the ballots. This was upsettig to me as it "could" have easily taken votes away from Obama. When I asked the Town Clerk about it, she said that the two candidates never formally contacted anyone in the state to have their names removed and therefore it legally had to remain on the ballots. Is that accurate? If it is, why do you think they wouldn't have followed the protocol and removed their names?

I just read this fact in the Huffington post: "In Vermont, almost as many voters picked Iraq as the economy _ the first Democratic contest this year in which Iraq was considered about as important as the economy."

That combined with the fact that 4 in 10 voters in the Vermont election are "independent" is a clear sign that Sen. Obama is going to destroy Sen. Clinton in Vermont. This is the first news of the night and is going to guide coverage, considering that a) Ohio is going to be too close to call and b) Texas is going to last an ungodly amount of time.

Unless we are in the primary states and voting today or are calling and/or helping get out the vote, today is a day to wait for the results. We wait to see if all the hard work has paid off. We wait to find out if our candidate connected with voters in those states as much as he has with us. We also wait with some trepidation as the attacks against him in the last two weeks have been numerous and these may have their own kind of momentum.

No matter what happens remember that just over two weeks ago he was down in all contests by double digits, more than 20 points in some of these states. That Ohio and Texas are now dead heats speaks volumes to his campaigning efforts and the strength of the message.

Yesterday I predicted a split decision. But even that favors Senator Obama who is ahead in all ways except super delegates and narrowing even there. As you watch the returns come in tonight keep in mind that while winning all four contests would be a knock-out blow, a win in either Texas or Ohio makes the electoral math so in favor of Obama that Clinton will have very little to cheer about.

Hope and hard work got us here; hope and hard work will secure the nomination. Whether that day is tomorrow, next month, or the convention.

How many times have I heard that in the last eight weeks?

I got back in town just in time to re-acclimate myself to what's left of the race for the Democratic nomination and I'm going to do a mini-watch party at the house tonight.

I'm going to stick my neck out and call tonight's results from Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas, and Vermont a draw -- Barack Obama wins Texas and Vermont while Hillary Clinton carries Rhode Island and Ohio. It appears as if early voting in Texas helps Obama while the bad weather in Ohio helps HRC.

So, it's a push.

For Obama however, this is as good as a win because it adds more delegates to his growing lead over HRC (now at 1392-1279) and it means that there will be 370 fewer delegates on the table for either candidate to win. What HRC needs tonight is a victory in the neighborhood of 60% in each of the four March 4 primary states and she's not going to get it.

Just a few other things I read last night that fall into the category of reading tea leaves:

A leaked e-mail from the Clinton campaign would seem to indicate that HRC's team has started the post-election finger pointing a little early.
Early voting ("no-fault" absentee voting) has been used effectively by the Obama campaign at the end of his rallies in Texas to get voters to the poll on the day when they are most fired up by voting rather than waiting for election day. These are votes that would not be counted in the most recent polls from Texas.
"Huffpollstrology" is yet another way of picking winners and losers on election day that combines all of the advantages of polling and pseudo-science. The bottom line is that Obama and Paul (both Leos) should consider relaxing with bath oils and McCain and Huckabee (both Virgos) are encouraged to look into networking. HRC's horoscope (Scorpio) almost makes a believer out of ME.

Texas reminds me more and more of California.

Recall how Hillary had a lot of momentum while the EARLY VOTING was going on, then Barack started to gain traction, leading to first a closing of the polls, then a final Zogby poll showing that momentum and a LEAD.

However, the benefits of the early voting (in the primary) in CA, led to a Clinton win of about 10 points. Respondents in Zogby's poll may have WANTED to vote for Obama, but had already cast their vote for Clinton.

In Texas, there are TWO things at work. One, is of course the same thing that benefitted Hill in CA. Early voting. Obama is going to CRUSH Hillary in the early voting, which was conducted before she started trending up a bit. Secondly, Obama's ground game (especially for the caucas portion) is much stronger. Don't believe me? From Politico's Smith...

"Behind the scenes, meanwhile, the Clinton campaign was scrambling Monday to put a field operation in place for Texas’s two-step electoral process, in which the primary election is followed by caucuses at each of about 8,000 precincts around the state. One aide said that while the campaign had rounded up thousands of volunteers to represent the campaign at those locations, they were still well over a thousand short.

The organizing scramble was matched by an internal struggle to tamp down flashes of public sparring between senior aides, with many damaging leaks focused on chief strategist Mark Penn. Penn did himself few favors internally Monday with an email to the Los Angeles Times in which he noted that he was responsible only for the campaign’s message, not its organizing or its spending."

In the end, I think that Obama will wind up winning TX by about 5-7 points and win more delegates.

In OH...I think HRC used every arrow in the quiver and will win by about 7-9 points.

In RI...I think HRC will win by about 5-7.

In VT...I think that Obama wins by 15-21.

Net GAIN of 10-20 delegates for Obama.

If my predictions hold, I do hope for Hillary's sake that the media doesn't take to playing her husband saying that she should suspend/end the campaing if she can't take both. That will be embarassing and make her look petulant. We need her to feel WELCOME to unify, rather than cornered.

Today, March 4, 2008 - millions look to you. A slumbering giant, who has not slept well, but who has remained drowsing for far too long is awake and looks to you.

The world, but mostly the Thinking American, a person who realizes that the problems of the USA go beyond jobs and the price of fuel, to the role that as a country, we've refused to play in issues of longter survival like international relations and the environment - watches and not without some anxiety.

We have a leader, someone who is no doubt imperfect, but someone who has demonstrated an ability and inclination and intent to mobilize US and to give US the ability to shape things. Someone who seems to remember what a government by the people means.

So today, may your focus and your energy make the weather no more than a minor distraction. May your enthusiasm protect you from our wondering and desire to be there. May your tenacity help you choose the high road for success should others choose less palatable methods to achieve their results.

This restless giant sees a glimmer of a future and I don't think it will return to slumber should the choice in the Fall be reduced to Clinton and McCain. For in that, as Ms. Clinton has so clearly stated, there is no choice.

Break free of the restraints of complacency. See what our country has become. The barbs thrown at Obama are merely distractions. Would someone who chose to be a community organizer and civil rights attorney when they could have written their own ticket as an attorney in an firm in NY be worried about getting a deal on a house?

Not going to be able to sleep

Well, here it is. The mini-super tuesday eve...and there is no way I am going to be able to sleep. Sen. Obama has actually done what I hoped. He has hit the big parts of Ohio. He went to Rhode Island. I was very excited to see my concept come to life - not that I take credit, but it was good to see that I can hold my own with the strategy folks. (Almost makes me believe I can actually run for office soon...)

Well, I think Texas is Barack all the way. Same with Vermont. Rhode Island will probably go Clinton. The old style of back room deals are strong in Mass and Rhode Island. She does well with that group. But Ohio. Oh Ohio. It might go his way - it might go her way. It will probably not be decided tomorrow night. Who ever thinks they should be there to declare a win is in the wrong place.

So, will that take us to Wyoming and Mississippi? Yup - there are two more in his pocket. Then Pennsylvania. I think Sen. Obama can do it there. Its going to take lots of work. But I know plenty of people in the state who are looking for change. Ignore the capitol area...There are lots of economic issues to tangle with:

Steel
Timber
Manufacturing
Coal
etc.

I again volunteer my services to help with any question about the coal industry and what can/should be done. Sen. Obama should be prepared for religious questions. He should be prepared for dinners with odd foods. (Which if you are ok with the weird foods of Chicago - pierogies, etc - you should be ok.) Go to lots of small towns in the northern tier. Show people that Pennsylvania is the rest of the country.

Good luck tomorrow - maybe Pennsylvania won't matter. Help us if we have to past April...

I hope that we can finally put this long primary season behind us. I don't know about anyone else but I got a bad case of primary fatigue. I have weeks worth of my favorite shows on tivo that I will never be able catch up on, because I am so addicted to CNN. I never get a good nights sleep anymore because I am so busy surfing the web for the lasted details and poll results. My friends say that I need to get a life. My response is this is my life, and it should be every one's. This is one of the most important elections of our generation and we must get it right! we must get the message out to our friends in Texas, Ohio, Vermont, and Rhode Island that Obama is the real deal for Change and he will take this country in a new direction. Then we can finally tell Clinton to go home and we will start to rally against the republicans and the politics of the past! Maybe then I can start catching up on my tivo and get some sleep.

OK—so I have to preface this blog with two embarrassing tidbits of personal information: first, I used to be a registered republican; and second, I voted for Bob Dole in 1996.

The first one can generally be explained away as a youthful indiscretion. The second—that’s a bit more difficult; I’m not even sure that Bob Dole voted for Bob Dole [although the non-stop third person referencing was rather entertaining].

Over the past twelve years, however, I find myself doing a reverse Winston Churchill and becoming increasingly more left-leaning. Towards that end, I offer my unabashed support for Barack Obama, the first campaign to which I have ever contributed anything more than my vote.

I joined the military in the position of Counterintelligence Agent in November, 2001. Like many others, my response to the September the 11th attacks was to look inward and find an avenue through which I could contribute to my country; to play a small role in achieving the broad ideals on which the United States was founded, but has often fallen woefully short. Regardless of how one views my decision to enlist in the military; I did so because I felt mobilized to serve a cause greater than my own self interests. I did so because I ardently believed that I had not contributed enough to what I felt was one of the fundamental notions of American life: creating a better future for the next generation of Americans.

Maudlin? Perhaps. Naïve? Probably. Sucker? Maybe.

However, it seems to me that the notion of America has always existed somewhere in the disconnect between its ideals and its reality. And there are distinct times in our history in which it is paramount to push for the hope of America rather than settling for its sometimes stark reality.

I support Barack Obama because he offers a unique message of hope, reconciliation, and dynamism that transcends traditional party lines; I support Barack Obama because he extols the virtues of finding commonality, whenever possible, rather than reveling in tearing others down; and, I support Barack Obama because of his dynamic ability to push through a progressive political agenda.

Are these fuzzy, amorphous concepts? Sure they are. However, it doesn’t make them any less tangible than Sen. Clinton’s itemized recitations of the government programs she’ll deliver if elected president.

I feel the same way about the Obama campaign as I did when I joined the military. It’s a campaign that actually calls on me to question what my role is in the process, encourages me to participate, and energizes me to be involved. I feel galvanized to be a broad part of a larger, more important ideal. And, frankly, it makes me feel good about myself.

I would argue that the energy being created by the Obama campaign is infinitely more important than small policy differences between Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama on health care. When citizens are motivated to participate, and feel good about their government, they end up with a more responsive, streamlined, and transparent government.

A NEW GOAL

Late yesterday evening. the powers that be posted our achievement - 1 million calls. With greatness comes expectation and as such, a new goal was posted. 1.5 million calls before Tuesday.

We have it all within our grasp. For those who don't say on the news front (it can be distracting) let me assure you that others who will be involved with the caucusing and ground support are really turning up the heat in Texas and Ohio and Rhode Island and Virginia. A knock out of all 4 races is VERY possible.

So two things you can do... when you have a minute.. make a call. Everyone you connect with either by the phone bank army or via your friends by email, phone or in person, encourage them to get involved in the Phone Bank Campaign. If you make 20 calls and you manage to find 3 other people who make only 10 calls each, you've become responsible for 50 calls. It doesn't even matter HOW you find them. If it is someone you call in TX or OH - their help is important on the ground but by the time they catch up with someone in a field office and get busy time is wasted. Suggest to them that they consider making a few calls while waiting for a return call or when the phone bank is open by the daily operations are paused.

There are HUNDREDS of thousands of people on the Barack Obama site - most never pick up the phone for the campaign but every ONE we can get to make just 3 calls is ALOT more.

Yes I Can!!! (My First Canvass)

I just finished my first canvass shift: it was great!

Max, our local staffer, told us that canvassing and phone calls were the two most effective ways that we could help. After that, I decided to resist my fears, challenge myself, and give canvassing a try.

I showed up at the White River Junction campaign office at 10, after a good breakfast, excited, but tentative. Max trained us on how to talk to voters, and gave us the voter turf lists we needed. After a couple of minutes reviewing the route I was going to walk I was ready to go.

When I started, I was worried that people would yell at me for trying to help my country. I was wrong. I learned very quickly that the people that I encountered were all polite, even when they did not have the time or interest for discussing politics. I had a great conversation with the undecided husband of a school teacher on Senator Obama's education policy. Another woman along the way told me about how she believes that Barack is the only candidate who can truly bring change to Washington.

The weather was actually rather pleasant. The sun was out, and the birds were singing. I dressed in layers and I was so comfortable that I worked all morning without my gloves.

Two hours after leaving the campaign office, I was done. It was quick, it was painless, and I feel like I did something concrete to help add votes for Senator Obama on Tuesday.

We really need canvassers over these last couple of days before the primary. Please consider the impact you could make with just a couple of hours of your time. If you are interested in canvassing, phone calling, or volunteering in other ways, please look for events in your area or contact your local campaign office. Politics is entertainment. The Entertainment business is obsessed with politics. Politics "as usual" is a phrase we have heard often during this Primary season and everytime I hear it I make my own parallels to the Entertainment industry, because I notice the same trends of corruption, special treatment for special interests, and the biggest factor of all...Money = Power. Next Tuesday, the voters in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont all have an opportunity to bring us one step closer to avoiding "politics as usual". The momentum and inspiration instilled in Barack Obama's campaign has brought young people to the voting process again while creating a true and deep desire for change. Similar occurances are happening in many aspects of the Entertainment industry as well. The recent writer's strike by the WGA in Los Angeles/Hollywood/NYC brought the industry to standstill, while making the industry big whigs look at how selfish they have become and how power hungry they have made their peers. The music industry is sinking year after year as CD sales continue to plummet. However, there is a movement towards digital distribution and Artists (including major ones such as Radiohead, Hole, Team Sleep, etc.) are now realizing that the need for huge record label monopolies like Sony, Warner Bros, Universal and the like are no longer necessary. The artist can now directly make a connection (and a sale) with the consumer/fan. Trends like these aren't mere coincedences. They are signal fires blowing into the wind, looking for the right people to find them. Barack Obama is the right person to spearhead this charge, in no more important of a place than the highest office in the land. One day, because of him and many others like him, change will be the medium for which "entertainment as usual" will become something of the past. Tuesday will be an important day for Barack Obama, an important day for me, and an important step forward for this country. Remember one thing though. Change doesn't happen overnight. But it sure will be entertaining...

We are down to the last few days before the Vermont primary and it is time to turn up our intensity another step. We will be responding in White River Junction with a new series of visibility events leading up to Tuesday.

The first event will be a Honk and Wave tomorrow (Friday, 2/29) at the intersection of Rte. 5 and Rte. 14 in White River Junction. This will take place from 4:45 - 5:45 so that we can focus on travelers during the afternoon rush hour. You can learn more about the event here.

We are also planning an event on Monday, 3/3. That will most likely be a Honk and Wave at the same intersection, but during morning rush hour to target a different group of drivers. I will post more information once we have more concrete plans.

Ready On Day One

I would like to debunk a myth held by Barack Obama, the media and his supporters. I can not understand how Barack can say he will be right on day one, when quite frankly, he was not even their. It was Hillary Rodham Clinton who on day one saw her city attacked. It was Hillary Clinton who walked through the smoke fill streets seeing first hand the death, injury and hysteria that over took her city. It was Hillary Clinton who, first hand, saw the terror , fear and anger on the faces of her friends, family and constituents. Are our memories so short that we forget the hysteria that over took this country after the attacks on Day One? Are our memories so short that we forget at the time Bush was give the authority to go to war, Bush had an approval rating into the high 80's? Have we forgotten how radio stations stopped playing the Dixie Chicks songs, how their records were run over in the streets because they opposed the Bush policies on the war? How war hero's service was tarnished because they apposed the war? Well I have not!!! Barack Obama and I shared the very same views on the war with Iraq, and we where a minority. But believe me that does not in any way mean I am ready to be commander and chief. Barack Obama was not their on day one to make the vote. He was not there to feel first hand the demands of the American public to go to war. If you remember, those of us who apposed the war were called traders. No matter what the reasoning behind her vote, at the time it was made Hillary was making a vote based on what she was elected as Senator to do and that was vote the will of her constituency. It is always easy to say I would have done this or that after the fact, but it is very hard to be honest with yourself and remind yourself what you wanted and what you would have done. So enough of this I'll be right on day one Barack, when you were not even there. And believe me no matter who we elect there will be mistakes made and frankly it dose not matter it is on day one, day two or day three. Yes, even by the Great Obama!!!!

The debate didn't give us a bump this time. Obama is slipping in Ohio and anyon who has been calling there probably knows that OHIO is a tough nut to crack.

In the process if watching Fox News this evening they kept playing the speech Hillary Clinton made today. In this speech she Mocked Obama and in turn she Mocked the THOUSANDS of supporters of Obama. I would like to see Obama address this in the upcoming debate. Probably by now many have seen it and it is very disturbing. 1st we all see the smerks on her face today in regard to the PICTURE that came out.

This picture is damaging and Hillary knows it. I run a Obama Nation myspace site and am always fielding questions and concerns. Many have been afraid to vote for Obama thinking he was a Muslim and other rumors. I have been dispelling the rumors with the truth facts that I know on a daily basis. Issues like this picture will make some go, see, he is a Muslim and Hillary can try and pull off a sneaky win. We have to avoid that and keep the public informed. Therefore, I am running a myspace site and I believe others should as well. Heavily promoting THE TRUTH about our canidate OBAMA.

The anger point came this evening when I saw the MOCKING of Barack. Saying according to Obama the skies are going to open up, all will be wonderful, everyone will be happy like a fairytale. She is desperate and that is a direct insult to all of the hard work all of us are doing inspiring and uniting the country. Because we BELIEVE and HOPE, she is making fun of that and our intelligence in the process. We know and Barack has said its going to be hard and a difficult process. But we are in the beginning stages of making changes and gathering the masses to believe. AS THEY SAY, IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE YOU MUST 1ST BELIEVE. And Hillary has to cut us down for BELIEVING. Hope For Hillary?

As those of you who read my posts know, I am a pretty fair-minded and logical guy...so consider the following within that context.

For those of you out there who are still hoping for the 30 points miracles in TX and OH I want you to consider how YOU would react if the Obama campaign (or any other rival campaign) put out a picture designed to make the uninformed public believe that Hillary was a radical feminist or a picture of her shredding a document?

You folks would rightfully be OUTRAGED that someone would take a picture reframe the context to passively suggest something that feeds into the smears the GOP uses against her. AND what's more..I'd support your outrage.

Please have the intellectual integrity to admit that. By shrugging this off as no big deal or simply as part of the "vetting" process is disingenuine.

This is a last ditch, scorched earth attempt to try to drum up as many points as possible. And in so doing, she is threatening the integrity of the Clinton brand, her role in the democratic party, and her husband's role on the world stage. Further, suggeswting that it is "her campaign, not her" is also a vapid statement. Is she in charge of her campaign or not?

Folks, I have maintained a real even-handed attitude, even with the disprortionate amount of pro-HRC posting here (often to the detriment of logic-based debate), but to support these tactics is beyond the pale. Mailings with debate-worthy talking points are one thing, quasi racist or something that plays on social fears is quite another..and you all know it.

No end justifies these sorts of means.

I can only hope that she has reassured her big donors enough that she can pay off her 5 million dollar loan with these attacks and come the 5th of March she will apologize for this, and exit gracefully. But in the meantime...she will pay for these tactics.

The Obama voluteers are already a dedicated, if not obsessive bunch...to feed them this kind of red meat will only increase the level of work they pu out, AND will cause the MSM to paint her as even MORE desperate.

Remember the Alamo...

The March 4 Texas (and possibly Ohio) primary may be the decisive, if not final battleground for Hillary Clinton’s campaign to win the 2008 Democratic nomination. Like Col. William Travis of the epic tale, she is making an Alamo-like last stand in the face of Barack Obama’s insurgency that has dissolved her once formidable lead in Texas polls. As an irony of history and in contrast with the original narrative, Hillary Clinton is hoping that Mexican-American voters concentrated along the southern border of the Lone Star State will, along with white women and lower income/education voters, come to her rescue.

But Don’t Forget the Green Mountain Boys

Generally ignored is the fact that, in addition to the Texas and Ohio primaries, there are two other primaries scheduled with a total of 370 delegates at stake on March 4: Texas 193, Ohio 141, Rhode Island 21 and Vermont 15. These numbers do not include Super-delegates.

Vermont has a tradition of political independence even older than that of the Lone Star State. After all, Vermont was briefly a republic before it became the fourteenth state. That tradition is reflected in the fact the current governor is a Republican (Jim Douglas), while its Senators include a Democrat (Pat Leahy) and a socialist (Bernie Sanders). Primaries are open, with citizens able to choose the party ballot they want to vote on. And first-time registrants still have to sign a modern version of the Freeman’s Oath, declaring they will vote their conscience and not let anyone tell them how to vote.

Restarting Today

As today’s Washington State and Wisconsin primaries and Hawai’i’s Caucus play out, we will all start to see a big push. No matter the results today (an Obama sweep, a split decision, another run of marginalization messages by both media outlets and candidates alike), the coming two weeks prior to the 4 March contests in Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas, and Vermont will seem even bigger than the lead-up to last month’s Super Tuesday. That's because they are going to be so very strongly contested.

After today, there are 16 contests with 1191 pledged delegates remaining. That's enough delegates for a Republican to win his party's nomination. With the delegate counts so close (even after today's contests), every delegate, endorsement and vote counts. Marginalization messages -- no matter the source, that are based on race, income, religion, voting history, whatever -- will matter for nothing as we go on.

In these coming weeks, I wish to offer all of us some reminders as to how we as supporters of Senator Obama can ride out the potential troubles to come and help deliver the most of these contests and delegates to this campaign:

My interest in Barack Obama began four years ago, I had been for the past 15 years living and working with my German husband and our children in Germany. Over the years we experienced firsthand, the European perception of Americans and their politics - many times with admiration, and progressively with disapproval.

We returned yearly in the summer to run the US branch of our business - so we were never far removed from what was the reality of their perceptions and what was prejudice.

This election coincided with our permanent return to the US with our children - what an opportunity for them and us to be involved in such an important election. My daughter had heard Obama speak 4 years ago, and said that he was who she would vote for if he ran when she was of voting age - and now at 19, she focused her attention on finding out what kind of a candidate he was. As a family endeavor, we looked at ALL the candidates in both parties. Barack Obama represents my family's hopes for our country and the Democratic ideals, he vocalizes our dreams as US and world citizens, and he makes me, as a business woman, willing to work and even sacrifice, time, money and success, to make the United States, and the world, better.

I am not alone - my voice in multiplied by everyone who is touched by his message. This is the leader we can be proud of, here, and in any part of the world.

In Light of Recent Events

Tonight — I stopped looking at Hillary's numbers.

While it's true that we hold a slim and possibly tenuous margin, I'm not thinking about her as competition. Her campaign is imploding: they've gone through two senior staff in as many days, they're tapped out for legal campaign contributions, and even CNN is finally starting to cast a clear eye over Senator Obama.

No longer watching Hillary, but I am watching McCain's numbers. And tonight, I was glad to see that we alpha'ed him, too. Those people who voted for us in the primaries so far won't suddenly, mysteriously switch their votes in the general election; they'll vote for us again. And we have, dare I say it? Triumphant margins on either side. America is speaking.

There is plenty of discussion on the various grassroots e-mail lists about the superdelegates. One camp says "Call, e-mail, write them!" Another says, "No, HQ says don't!" A wise few say, "Forget the superdelegates, we have a full plate as it is." I'm in the third camp. This race is too close to go maverick and it neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg to listen to HQ. And we do have a lot of work ahead of us, and I believe in Occam's Razor.

My feeling is this:

We are about 725 delegates short of the nomination. Should Hillary concede, endorse Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination and give us her delegates, that would put us up and over the top like Superman, without superdelegates. At this point, Hillary is a pledged-delegates spoiler; what we need to do, in my view, is to work like crazy and gain a decisive margin victory in Texas, Ohio, and/or Pennsylvania. Vermont tends to vote heavily independent, God bless 'em, so who knows who they'll tip for!

We're likely to take Hawai'i because he's a native son, and I know for a fact that at least Eugene and Portland like Obama (Salem less so). We have 65 delegates and I'm looking for Barack to take 40 of them.

But that's pure speculation. The bottom line is that we need decisive victories in Texas and Ohio; get Hillary to concede the nomination race, and get her delegates.

Let's hit the phones, folks. I got lots of friends and family in Ohio and Texas, and you bet I'm-a gonna make them bloody sick of me before the month's out! :)

Obama First to File, Again Leads Fundraising in Vermont

Senator Barack Obama is the first presidential candidate to file with the Vermont Secretary of State to appear on the Democratic primary ballot next March. Over 1500 signatures were gathered by volunteers, 500 more than required, over the past 6 months in a grass roots effort to meet the petition requirements for filing. Applications to participate in the primary can be submitted as late as mid-January, but Obama’s enthusiastic supporters did not wait for his campaign to ask for help in completing the petition requirement, and the formal application was submitted in Montpelier on October 17.

Obama also remains the number one fundraiser in the Green Mountain state by the end of the third quarter. Based on his latest filing with the FEC, the Illinois Democrat has raised $334,792 this year, an amount that exceeds the combined total for all other candidates from both parties.

It's been a crazy month for me. I've spent countless all nighters trying to improve my grassroots Barack Obama website that I hope will make a difference in the younger voters out there. There are still a few glitches to fix, but for the most part, the new site is online and ready to help promote Obama as best as it can.

Probably the biggest difference is that there is now a page for every US city and state where people can leave comments and quickly interact. I chose the simple comment system because I know that many younger voters won't take the time to sign up for Barackobama.com but still want their voices to be heard, so this is their chance to be heard.

The most time consuming part of the whole website redesign was the creation and upload of over 30,000 images people can get on t-shirts. Like I mentioned earlier, there are a few problems with a few cities and states, but basically, EVERY CITY has its own Barack Obama t-shirt.

Let me say that again... EVERY US CITY has it's own t-shirt design!

I'm an artist and web designer, and this is how I'm supporting Obama. It doesn't matter what you're good at.. there's definitely something you can do to help him get noticed.

** Major Vermont Political Figures Endorse Barack Obama for President**

Burlington, VT, September 11, 2007

Vermont State Attorney General William H. Sorrell and Vermont State Treasurer Jeb Spaulding, as well as Former Burlington Mayor Peter Clavelle, will announce their endorsement of Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s candidacy for President at a political rally and organizing party tomorrow evening. Obama was the top political fundraiser in the state during the first six month of the year, collecting more than all other candidates of both parties combined. He also won a poll conducted by the Vermont Democratic Party, which announced on August 1 that Obama had 36% of some 800 votes cast.

Sorrell has served as Attorney General since he was appointed to the position in May 1997, and was subsequently re-elected five times. In 2004-2005 he served as president of President of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), which had given him the Kelley-Wyman Award for being the “Outstanding Attorney General” in 2003.

Jeb Spaulding was first elected Treasurer in 2002, having served eight terms in the State Senate from 1985-2000. A University of Vermont graduate, he was a founder and General Manager of WNCS-FM in Montpelier and a general partner in Precision Media, Inc., which owned and operated radio stations in New England, for many years.

Peter Clavelle served seven terms as mayor of Burlington from 1989 to 2006, having previously served as Director of Community and Economic Development in the administration of then-Mayor Bernie Sanders. Clavelle, who now assists in community development projects abroad, won an EPA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 and Champlain College’s Distinguished Citizen Award in 2007.

Vermonters for Obama, a grassroots organization made up entirely of local volunteers, has scheduled a “Club Obama Organizing Party” from 6-9PM on Wednesday, September 12 at Club Metronome (above Nectar’s), 188 Main Street in Burlington. The group has already collected signatures to ensure that Obama’s name appears on the March 4, 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary, and has participated in neighborhood canvassing, both in Vermont and New Hampshire. The party, at which the three senior politicians will officially announce their support, will feature big screen presentations of the candidate, music, and Obama merchandise. The event is open to the public.

Fundraising Analysis - Now even more so

I wrote this after the second quarter numbers came out. Subsequently, there were reports that Clinton's campaign had to lower some of their ealier numbers due to double counting. But now that the Hsu no longer fits and the Clinton campaign is returning $850,000, there will have to be some serious recalculation. I can't wait for the third quarter, which ends in only 3 weeks.

MONTPELIER, VT. — Vermont state senators voted Friday to call for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, saying their actions have raised "serious questions of constitutionality."

The nonbinding resolution was approved 16-9 without debate — all six Republicans in the chamber at the time and three Democrats voted against it.

Bush and Cheney's actions in the U.S. and abroad, including in Iraq, "raise serious questions of constitutionality, statutory legality, and abuse of the public trust," the resolution reads.

The Vermont Senate is believed to be the first state chamber in the country to pass such a resolution, said Bill Wyatt, a National Conference of State Legislatures spokesman. "Many chambers passed resolutions about the war in Iraq, but none that we are aware have called for impeachment," he said.

Some were thrilled. "I think it's going to have a tremendous political effect, a tremendous political effect on public discourse about what to do about this president," said James Leas, an advocate of withdrawing troops from Iraq and impeaching Bush and Cheney.

Democratic House Speaker Gaye Symington has kept a similar resolution from reaching the floor in her chamber. She said it would distract Washington from efforts to withdraw troops from Iraq, which she says is more important.

State lawmakers in Wisconsin and Washington have pushed for similar resolutions.

Getting started

As a fourth-generation Vermonter and self-styled "Reagan Democrat" who voted for Clinton (twice) and Bush (twice), I am registering my support for Barack Obama in the 2008 election and I am reaching out to oher like-minded Vermonters to do the same.

As a 20-something, I was swayed by Clinton's charm and impressed with his approach to domestic and foreign affairs (bad choice of words, I know!). Alas, because I was tremendously disappointed with his personal choices, especially in light of his role as a father, I turned to the Republican party for the last two elections.

As a 30-something, I was swayed by Bush's fiscal and social conservatism and still remain impressed with his steadfast approach to domestic and foreign poilicy. That said, I am tremendously disappointed with his administration's handling of many core issues, i.e., the war, stem cell research and immigration reform.

As a soon-to-be 40-year-old, I want to give my daughter's generation the best chance for domestic tranquility and financial success. Although I admit I know little about Barack besides what I've read in his books and seen through his television appearances, I'm swayed by his populist message and I think he might just be the best candidate out there to lead us in the post-Bush era.

Sure, he's untested on a international scale, but his biography is impressive, his integrity seems great and I think he's strong and morally grounded enough to resist the trappings of the office. I am convinced he's committed to doing what is in the best interests of the majority of Americans.

I hope other Vermonters will recognize Barack's apparent strength of character, learn more about his policies (through this amazingly good website) and if they - as I - come to think this is the right man to lead this country, they will do all they can to support his candidacy.

Yes, I know that Vermont is small and insignficant in the grand scheme of things, but we still have a voice and if enough people thrown their voices behind Barack Obama we just might make something very special happen in 2008.
