Yesterday in Des Moines, Valley High students kicked off their weekly canvass to local neighborhoods to encourage more young people to vote—and encourage all of our supporters to vote early. For the first 15 minutes before the kickoff, the student leaders talked with a few of the first-timers about what to expect at the doors and shared some of fun things they have seen over the last few weeks. Everyone was laughing, having a good time, and totally fired up to get out and start knocking on doors--- then the canvass officially kicked off with a chant of “4 on 3”—and if you aren’t familiar, that’s “1,2,3… 4!”

As they were leaving, I got a chance to talk to a few of the students about why they were getting involved in this election.

“This is my first canvass, and my first election to get involved. And even though I won’t be able to vote, I feel like everyone should be doing their part. I’m also here because I’m pro choice, and I was encouraged because my sister in law really likes Joe Biden”

“My parents are really political and I’ve been to the Harkin Steak Fry several times—and that has always been lots of fun… This is the first election that I’ll be able to vote in, but I was able to caucus for Barack—which really meant a lot to me…I feel like the world needs a new impression of America, and I know that Barack can do that, and he can also show the world our values and morals more so than any other candidate.”

“Barack is compelling new people to get involved, and he is really the product of the way that we see the world. We want to see more involvement, more diplomacy… He changes the rhetoric coming out of Washington, but it’s so much more than that because it’s getting more and more of us involved. We want more discussion-- more voices in the discussion.”

“I’ve been making phone calls and canvassing for awhile now, because I really want to see this happen. Barack has changed the paradigm of campaigning by getting more people involved—young people too. He supports civil rights and he understands how America is viewed across the world, which is the first step to bringing real change.
