Obama St. Patricks Day t-shirts, Updates, and Nobody Messing With Joe

It's been quite a while since I updated this blog, but felt like enough has happened recently that an update is due. I've been busy following all the recent events with the economy and of course I watch Obama's speeches when they happen. This past one inspired me to not only create some stuff around the whole "nobody messes with Joe" slogan, but also made me start a new blog devoted to all the products that end up being created when events like that happen.

My most recent blog is about another seemingly popular topic that comes around this time of year. I remember last year, Irish Obama stuff was all over the place during St. Patrick's Day. I don't see things slowing down in regards to this love of both green beer and Obama, so I wrote an article on Barack Obama's St. patrick's Day t-shirts. It's interesting that on the site I use for all my designs, "Obama Irish t-shirts" are the very first thing you see on their St Patricks Day t-shirts page. He's got to be poplular if he's getting that much attention. It makes me with I had designed some shamrock'ed out designs myself. Maybe next year :/

In other news, I think Obama's first 4 days of being in office were sensational. There were so many reversals of Bush's laws that happened in such a short period of time that it was amazing to witness. The fact that he jumped in and changed things right off the bat makes me think more and more that he's got an idea of the direction he wants to take things toward. I think Bush not only lacked direction, but with what direction he had, he was poorly misguided.

Obama's Change.gov is also another major shift in the way of government. There's something truly beneficial to having all the expenses of government in the close scrutiny of the eyes of its citizens. My only hope is that not only do they keep the information public, but that they also make a way to comment and/or submit feedback on various expenses. I have a feeling the large US population will be able to spot waste more efficiently than a handful of people in the whitehouse.

I'm going to try to update this more often as I get the time, but until then, I wish everyone who reads this the best in these crazy times.

15 Days From Change: An Update From the National Student Co-Director

Things have been pretty busy lately (needless to say) but I wanted to take a quick moment to give you an update about some interesting facts and stories from the past week or so.

Voter Registration:

The Obama-Biden campaign is committed to enabling as many people as possible to exercise their fundamental right to vote. But you have to registered in order to vote, and the campaign has been very successful in ensuring that every eligible voter is on the rolls.

Taking Virginia as an example, just a week ago a group of committed HS students travelled down to Virginia from Maryland where they knocked on an astounding 12,000 doors in a single weekend.

It's this kind of hard work that has resulted in the numbers described below.

Virginia now has more than five million registered voters, a new record, as of the deadline for registration for the fall election closed on Oct. 6th, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections.
The total number of registered voters in Virginia is now 5,021,933.
Since January, Virginia, a swing state this cycle, has experienced a net gain of 436,000 new voters, including what they call an "onslaught" of new voters in the last week of registration.
Nearly 40 percent of the newly registered voters across the state are under the age of 25. Trends show that, regardless of age, females represent the majority of new registered voters.

Debate

Near the very end of the final presidential debate last Wednesday night, Obama stated:

"I also have to disagree on Sen. McCain's record when it comes to college accessibility and affordability.
"Recently his key economic adviser was asked about why he didn't seem to have some specific programs to help young people go to college and the response was, well, you know, we can't give money to every interest group that comes along.
"I don't think America's youth are interest groups, I think they're our future."

From Day 1 through the present, Senator Obama has understood that investing in young people is an investment in our future. As President, he will follow through on his promises to make college accessible and affordable to all Americans.

Campaign Is Putting Their Money Where Their Mouths Are

In addition to our strong field outreach, our campaign has been doing a variety of innovative advertising designed to reach out to younger voters and make sure we don't leave anyone out. We're continuing this commitment through the end, and are excited to see the initial result of our efforts both on the ground and on the air on Election Day. You may have read recently that the Obama-Biden campaign is the first presidential campaign to take out virtual advertisements in video games.

The Talk

The campaign recently unveiled this website about having "The Talk" with your parents and grandparents. This may not be "The Talk" you're thinking about though...instead it's about talking to your parents and grandparents about supporting Senator Obama. While intimidating for many young people to initiate, I think we've already seen the impact of these cross-generational conversations. Tax Plans (that’s one for you, nineteen for me).

There’s a graph that Obama supporters are sending around, showing the differences between the Republican and Democrat tax cut proposals. It shows that Obama is not in fact planning to raise taxes - he’s planning to cut them for all but the very, very rich. I couldn’t help but notice though - the graph is still massively weighted towards the interests of the super-rich. For example, the bottom two-thirds of the population are given only a third of the space on the graph, while the top 0.1% of the population - one in a thousand people - gets almost 10%. What’s more, an “average tax cut” is then given, which seems to have been derived from taking a total of the nine income brackets shown and dividing it by nine. Journalists should really volunteer to take remedial arithmetic, you know. Once again, this ignores that one of the brackets represents one thousandth of the population.

So let’s make this a bit more accurate - let’s keep all the brackets, but draw it to scale.

Voter Registration

I was reading about various states purging vote registration rolls and it reminded me of a story I read about earlier this year where 10,000 names were purged from the rolls in one district in Madison county: http://missthirddistrict.blogspot.com/2008/03/madison-voter-purge.html This one person actually had the power to act on her own to do this, and even purged a candidate and his wife! That is ridiculous.

I also found a story that I missed in July about a plan for a massive two-year purge of inactive voters in the county. Campaign Update

On Thursday night, Barack really hit it out of the park – or the football stadium, to be exact. Americans from all walks of life, in Denver and in living rooms across Minnesota, were energized as Senator Obama laid out a specific, detailed agenda for the future.

One thing is clear: Minnesotans are focused, united, and ready to get to work electing Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Since Thursday, we have seen a surge of people coming in to get lawn signs, buttons and t-shirts. But more importantly, people are coming in to sign-up to volunteer. I’ve been involved in many campaigns, but I’ve never seen something like this.

These are regular, everyday Minnesotans who are eager to answer Senator Obama’s challenge to knock on doors, make phone calls, stuff envelopes, anything to help spread his message of change directly to their friends and neighbors. If you're ready to answer the call, sign up to volunteer and your local field organizer will contact you about ways to get involved.

We are running the largest grassroots campaign this state has ever seen because people win elections – not commercials, buttons, lawn signs or bumper stickers – and based on the conversations we’re having with people across the state and with the help of our grassroots volunteers, I feel confident that we will win in Minnesota and send Barack Obama and Joe Biden to Washington to bring the change this country so desperately needs.

McCain and Palin, Still More of the Same

When the Republicans come to town next week they will be accompanied by John McCain’s new running mate, Alaska’s first-term Governor Sarah Palin. While we all congratulate Gov. Palin and her family on her designation as the Republican nominee for vice president, her addition to the ticket does not change the fact that the Republicans are offering more of the same failed Bush policies of the past.

1. Public Enemy Free Concert

The Re-create 68 Alliance has announced that in addition to free shows by Dead Prez, Rebel Diaz and Blue Scholars, and 22 other influential bands, the historic and legendary political hip-hop band Public Enemy (The original line-up) will be playing a free concert at Civic Center Park on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 2pm which is expected to draw thousands (no tickets necessary).

2. Cindy Sheehan Joins Us in Denver

The Re-create 68 Alliance also announced that anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan and Green Party Presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney and Green Party Vice Presidential candidate Rosa Clemente will be joining their historic line-up of speakers who include Ida Audeh, Kathleen Cleaver, Ward Churchill, Mark Cohen, Chairman Fred Hampton Jr., Larry Hales, Larry Holmes, Ron Kovic, Glenn Spagnuolo, Pamela Africa, King Downing, Jenny Esquiveo, Mumia Abu Jamal - Current Political Prisoner (Recorded from Death Row for the DNC), Gloria Estela La Riva, Ricardo Romero, Natsu Saito, Ann Erika White Bird, and others.

3. March and Street Theater in the Freedom Cage

DNC Police Riot Preview?

Activists Declare Zero Tolerance for Poorly-trained and Rogue Federal

[Denver, CO] -- Was the July federal attack on Rainbow peace activists a
preview for DNC police riots? Colorado activists are asking Denver
officials to adopt a zero tolerance policy for poorly-trained and rogue
federal law enforcement officers who will be providing security at the
Democratic National Convention (DNC) in downtown Denver from Aug. 24
through Aug. 28. The Colorado Legal Eagles, a local civil rights group, is
asking Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Colorado Governor Bill Ritter to
begin an investigation into brutal and violent tactics used on July 3 by
federal agents in Wyoming against peace activists in the National Forest,
in the hopes of preventing those same tactics from being used against peace
activists at the DNC. The violent tactics, which injured several adults and
children, include the shooting of pepper bullets into crowds of women and
children, pointing semi-automatic rifles at children, and repeatedly
tasering a man who was handcuffed.

Attendees of the annual Rainbow Gathering meet every year on the July 4
holiday in the national forest to camp, commune with nature, and pray for
peace. This year's Gathering was in southwestern Wyoming near Big Sandy and
was attended by about 6,000 campers. Every year, the U.S. Forest Service
(USFS) increases its attempts to disrupt and cause violence at the Rainbow
Family's peaceful gatherings. This year's Gathering was no exception and
was almost certainly used by the feds as a training exercise for the DNC.

The pathetic examples of crowd control exhibited by these federal agents is
either extremely poor training or done intentionally to provoke the crowd.
One incident occurred on July 3 in the Kid Village area of the Gathering,
where all the children in the campground play. The incident began when
twelve to twenty federal agents stormed into Kid Village, brandishing
handguns, rifles, shotguns, tasers and pepper bullet guns with the intent
to arrest one person for what was later said to be suspicion of marijuana
possession.

Panic and terror ensued as the feds stormed Kid Village, which was crowded
with dozens of campers and children. One woman who tried to ask the agents
what was going on was brutally thrown to the ground and also arrested. No
one knew why the camp had suddenly been invaded by armed federal agents

The hundreds of Rainbows in Kid Village try to dispel the tense situation
by chanting "Om" (a type of meditation chant with calming effects.).
Rainbow cries of "We love you" and "We mean you no harm" directed at the
federal agents are heard.

Without any warning whatsoever, several USFS federal agents open fire into
the crowd. Instead of trying to communicate with the crowd and control it,
they started firing their guns at close range and at random, using what was
determined later to be hard plastic pepper bullets. As the feds retreated
with the two people they had arrested, they repeatedly opened fire without
warning into the crowd, injuring both adults and children, and hitting one
man in the face. There are also reports that the feds used rubber bullets
and that one federal agent pointed his gun at several children and a baby.

The agents had no bullhorn and did not try to communicate with the crowd in
any way, causing questions on whether or not they intentionally tried to
incite the crowd to get angry and violent. Instead, they instantly formed a
defensive posture, with guns pointed outward. The only ones who tried to
control the crowd were several Rainbow peace activists. Shouts of "Stay
back. Stay where you are" are heard from the Rainbows. Several peace
activists who tried to help by standing as buffers between the federal
agents and campers were shot repeatedly with pepper bullets in the back.

Police say these relatively new non-lethal weapons are similar to paint
balls, however, they are not that innocuous. Photos of injuries caused by

"In the days when cops only had guns and shooting people would kill them,
they were a lot more careful about using weapons," says Rob Savoye,
Colorado Legal Eagles. "Now that they have less than lethal weaponry, there
is nothing to stop them from shooting at people. In fact, because these
weapons are supposedly 'less than lethal', law enforcement is actually
encouraged to start shooting at people. These weapons are extremely lethal,
and the cops need to understand that."

Savoye continued, "These videos show the feds weren't sufficiently trained
to deal with the stress of dealing with large crowds of people. They got
easily upset in situations where they shouldn't have. I hope the DNC
security force has a lot better training. Like the Rainbows, the DNC
protesters are just people exercising their First Amendment rights and
there is no reason to start shooting at them."

Joseph Vigorito, another member of the Colorado Legal Eagles, says, "It's
clear they went in there to inflict pain and hurt people. There was no one
posing any threat whatsoever. The feds were just looking to incite a
response from the crowd."

This is likely to be a preview of what crowd control will look like at the
DNC. The USFS federal agents presumably received the same training as the
federal agents who will be controlling the crowds at the DNC. The DNC
security is being lead by the Secret Service, with help from the National
Guard and other federal agencies.

At the DNC, federal agents are likely to find themselves in instances where
they must make an arrest in a crowd of people. Will they handle it the same
heavy-handed way they did in Wyoming, storming into the crowd and shooting
at random? Or will they come equipped with bullhorns to communicate with
the crowd and a better tactic to arrest one person in the midst of
thousands?

Denver received a $50 million dollar grant for security during the DNC. If
the training of the federal agents in Wyoming is any indication of how
well-trained the agents will be during the DNC, we may be in store for a
repeat of the "police riots" of the 1968 DNC in Chicago.

We are urging concerned citizens to contact Mayor Hickenlooper and Governor
Ritter and urge them to have zero tolerance for any police "overreaction"
during the DNC:

I didn’t procrastinate. I got my application in five days before the deadline. Then it was announced that the application period had been extended for the Obama Organizing Fellows. I quickly got over it but looked forward to some news on May 16. Today is May 16.

The temperatures have been hovering in the sixties this week. It’s been damp and rainy and side roads have been wormy. Today, though, the clouds have made way for some of that mid-spring sun to reach my spot in the Midwest. It felt really good being outside today. The sun was warm. A turkey vulture had dropped a feather next to the raspberry shrubs for me to find, a particularly rare gift.

My mobile rang. I didn’t know the number, but heard a familiar phrase when I answered, “This is Spencer with the Barack Obama Campaign. You applied for the Obama Organizing Fellows? If you have time right now, I’d like to conduct a preliminary interview.”

In addition to asking the questions that were on the application, I was asked if I would be able to commit to 30 hours or more for six weeks this summer through the end of July. We discussed a few finer points including would I be able to take direction from someone who is, on average, 24 years old? Hmm… Our conversation concluded with the suggestion that I should be hearing from the Campaign within the next week.

If accepted, training will take place in Columbus on June 14 and 15. It would seem as if I passed the second step, so the reference calls may start soon.

If you need to stay on top of the newest News... and you aren't already using news.google.com well you know what a job you have in front of you. Scrolling blogs is great but you often get directed to the same article multiple times from different people.

not only sorts the news giving you the freshest stuff but also indicates a wide breadth of sources.

It requires someone a bit tough though... since credible sources are next to non-credible sources and articles that are little more than someone's flight of fancy are next to real news.

Still for those who are wanting to offer cutting edge response in their blogs or discussions, it is INVALUABLE!

Sheboygan County Update

Yesterday, we had a fired-up group of volunteers go door-to-door to Get Out The Vote for Barack. Brian Driscoll, a volunteer on vacation from Governor Doyle's office, brought us walk lists and literature. Our walkers talked to voters and dropped literature all over Sheboygan…thanks to everyone who came out!

Because of the poor weather conditions, we decided to not open the Emil Mazey Hall campaign office today. We will be back there at 9:00 AM tomorrow. If you have time today, please make phone calls from home. You can go to www.barackobama.com, On the main page, you will see a box on the right called "MAKE A DIFFERENCE." In that box, you will find "Make Calls." Click on the Wisconsin map and you will be given names and numbers to call from the comfort of your own home. These calls make a HUGE difference!

We can use more folks walking on Monday. While I know most people will not be home during the day, we know that every vote counts, and we do have literature to drop! I also have some large Obama signs that are geared towards students, but can be effective anywhere. If you can pick some up tomorrow morning and take them to UWS and Lakeland, I think we could get some more student votes. If you haven't already signed up for a particular shift, please let me know if you plan on coming to Emil Mazey Hall, so we'll be sure to be there.

While we haven't received any specific driving requests for Tuesday, we may get some from the campaign. I'll keep you posted on any major news. Please feel free to forward this message to your friends! The polls open in less than 48 hours!!

Update on my Health

On Sunday, November 4th, I was rushed to Sheboygan Memorial Hospital in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, after falling ill.

The doctor that took care of me for the three and half hours that I was at Sheboygan Memorial said that I had not had much water and eat too much sweets.

State of the Campaign

When we got into this race as a largely unknown candidate new to the national political stage, we never expected that nine months later at this stage of the race, we would be in a tight three way race in Iowa; leading in the money race; have the largest grassroots organization in modern political history; and have an organizational advantage in the early states and February 5 over a quasi-incumbent from the most powerful political machine in modern political history.

Barack is the candidate with the message and biography that is most in synch with the electorate - according to a Gallup poll in September Democratic voters prefer change to experience by a margin of 73 percent to 26 percent.

The Obama campaign has: the largest organizations with the most experienced staff and enthusiastic volunteers in the 4 early states;

An unexpected financial advantage that allows the campaign to compete in multiple contests at the same time;

The most donors by far in the race, who as the election draws nearer will get even more active on our behalf, giving us financial sustainability;

A significant organizational advantage in February 5th states.

Barack Obama's Schedule: On Monday, Barack Obama received the endorsement of the New York City Correction Officers' Benevolent Association. Tuesday, he's speaking at Change to Win in Chicago. Wednesday, he can be seen live on the NBC/NECN/New Hampshire Public Radio/New Hampshire Democratic Party debate, which will be broadcast live on MSNBC at 9pm EST. Following the debate he'll head to New York, where he'll participate in a live interview on ABC's The View at 11am EST on Thursday before leading a major rally in Washington Square Park. On Friday, he speaks at Howard University's Convocation and participates in the CBC Issues Forum in Washington, DC.

Challenging Conventional Thinking in Washington

Barack Obama believes that what's stopped us from meeting our challenges isn't a lack of good ideas; it's a politics that puts the partisan and special interests ahead of the people's interests. Too many in Washington see politics as a game, instead of a mission. That's why Barack Obama believes this election cannot be about who can play this game better. It has to be about who can put an end to the game-playing. Barack Obama is the one candidate with the judgment to challenge conventional thinking in Washington and bring about fundamental change in this country.

Our Common Stake in America's Prosperity

Barack Obama is asking Wall Street to join him in saying that we will not tolerate a market that is fixed, and rigged by lobbyists who don't represent the interests of real Americans or most businesses. We will no longer tolerate the attitude that "what's good for me is good enough" - because the only thing that's good enough is what's best for America.

Barack Obama has proposed several steps to prevent future crises like the subprime mortgage fiasco and restore some measure of public trust in the market. First, we need to update the current mortgage rules and establish a Home Score system to create a simplified, standardized metric for home mortgages. Second, there should be an immediate investigation of the relationship and business practices of rating agencies and their clients. Third, we need a five-star credit card rating system to inform consumers about the level of risk involved in every credit card they sign up for, including how easily the company can change the interest rate.

In the coming weeks, Barack Obama will lay out a 21st century economic agenda to help ensure that America can compete and thrive in a global economy. The first part of his agenda is a plan to modernize and simplify our tax code so it provides greater opportunity and relief to more Americans. The second part will be to ensure America's competitive edge in the 21st century. The third part will be to modernize and strengthen America's safety net for working Americans. As President, Barack Obama will help usher in a new era of mutual responsibility in America.

Tax Fairness for the Middle Class

Barack Obama believes our current tax code reflects the wrong priorities. It rewards wealth instead of work. Special interests have achieved huge tax breaks and loopholes that shift the burden from the well-off to working people. This isn't good for Main Street or Wall Street. Because as Obama said - when ordinary Americans are denied opportunity, that pain has a way of trickling up.

Obama would restore fairness to the tax code to strengthen the American economy. First, Obama would cut taxes for all working Americans. All told, 150 million Americans will get a tax cut. Because this credit would be greater than their income tax bill, the Obama tax cut would eliminate income taxes for 10 million working Americans. Second, Obama would ease the burden on the middle class by providing a universal homeowner's tax credit. Third, Obama will eliminate the income tax for any American retiree making less than $50,000 per year. Fourth, Obama will simplify tax filing for middle class Americans.

The Experience America Needs

The pundits say Barack Obama lacks experience because to them, only the years you spend in Washington count. But Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld had two of the longest resumes in Washington and they got us into the worst foreign policy fiasco in recent history. So time served doesn't mean sound judgment. Barack Obama may not have the experience Washington likes; but he has the experience America needs.

Barack Obama's experience tells him that real change comes not by dividing, but by bringing people together to get things done - like when he worked with police officers and civil rights advocates to reform a death penalty system that had sent thirteen innocent people in Illinois to death row. Or when he worked with Republicans and Democrats to expand health care for 150,000 Illinoisans, or put $100 million worth of tax cuts in the pockets of working families.

Barack Obama's experience tells him that real change comes when we put the people's interests before the special interests and partisan interests. That's what he did in Illinois when he took on money in politics and passed the first major ethics reform in twenty-five years, and in Congress when he passed a law that earned him the cold shoulder from leaders of both parties - and for the first time in history forced Washington lobbyists to disclose who they're raising money from and who in Congress they're funneling it to.

Iraq

Barack Obama opposed the Iraq war from the start - at a time when it was unpopular to do so. He believes this war should never have been authorized and never been waged. He introduced a plan back in January that would have gradually and responsibly removed all combat troops from Iraq. He's kept the pressure on the Republican Senators and Congressmen who continue to support the President's failed course. Now he's calling for an immediate end to the surge that begins to bring our troops home. If we don't end the war before George Bush leaves office, then it will be the first thing Barack Obama does as President.

Health Care
Over the last decade, the drug and insurance industries spent $1 billion in lobbying. And their friends in Congress made it illegal for our government to negotiate with the drug companies for cheaper drug prices. As President, Barack Obama will sign a universal health care bill into law by the end of his first term that will cover every American, cut the cost of a typical family's premiums by up to $2,500 a year, make sure that if you lose your job, you don't lose your health care, too, and make it legal to negotiate with the drug companies for cheaper drugs.

Greetings, Colorado!

As many of you know, we had an extremely successful organizing meeting on Tuesday night for the upcoming Walk for Change. On June 9th, groups all over the country will be canvassing their neighborhoods to get the word out about Barack Obama. In Colorado, new walks are being organized every day!

If you attended the planning meeting on Tuesday night, please write a blog post about your experience. I know I had a great time helping set up, meeting people from the website, and sharing ideas about future get-togethers. Thank you to everyone who introduced themselves at the meeting or sent me a message the next day. It's good to know that Obama supporters are intelligent, friendly, and proactive.

As Kristl Tyler suggested during the meeting, Coloradans for Obama is a good place to start making connections across the state and looking for relevant information. As the campaign gears up, more and more content will be added. We also highly recommend you join the group in your city so you can get information about local events and meet some of your neighbors. Kick-Off Update

I'm sitting here relaxing, allowing myself to take in the magnitude of national support for Barack, while wearing a happy $865.00 smile. That's how much money we - rural, historically Republican, Menard County supporters have contributed to Barack after just one pot-luck get-together Saturday. We are on the rise. I'm most moved by the intelligent, thoughtful and caring people who are stepping forward to insure a major change coming about in the next Presidential election.

This campaign IS about US. I fought back the urge to weep after watching Barack's live Healthcare Forum discussion with citizens from New Hampshire yesterday. I can just feel his constant hand on the pulse and needs of us - the common voter, parent, retiree, veteran, working-class, IGNORED and TRAMPLED backbone of America.

In this pivotal time, we're inspired and determined to continue relentlessly forward in helping Barack to help us. Keep in touch with our local group as we post regular meetings and events. We're collectively growing the future direction of our great nation.

I owe it to my young men sons, to build a better door for their futures. Thank you to all of you who've come in to be heard and offered a hand in getting us going.
