Letter from Senator Ted Kennedy to President Obama

THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary _______________________________________________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 9, 2009

Below is the text of the letter from Senator Edward M. Kennedy referenced by the President in tonight's address to a Joint Session of Congress.

May 12, 2009

Dear Mr. President,

I wanted to write a few final words to you to express my gratitude for your repeated personal kindnesses to me - and one last time, to salute your leadership in giving our country back its future and its truth. On a personal level, you and Michelle reached out to Vicki, to our family and me in so many different ways. You helped to make these difficult months a happy time in my life. You also made it a time of hope for me and for our country.

When I thought of all the years, all the battles, and all the memories of my long public life, I felt confident in these closing days that while I will not be there when it happens, you will be the President who at long last signs into law the health care reform that is the great unfinished business of our society.

For me, this cause stretched across decades; it has been disappointed, but never finally defeated. It was the cause of my life. And in the past year, the prospect of victory sustained me-and the work of achieving it summoned my energy and determination. There will be struggles - there always have been - and they are already underway again.

But as we moved forward in these months, I learned that you will not yield to calls to retreat - that you will stay with the cause until it is won. I saw your conviction that the time is now and witnessed your unwavering commitment and understanding that health care is a decisive issue for our future prosperity. But you have also reminded all of us that it concerns more than material things; that what we face is above all a moral issue; that at stake are not just the details of policy, but fundamental principles of social justice and the character of our country.

And so because of your vision and resolve, I came to believe that soon, very soon, affordable health coverage will be available to all, in an America where the state of a family's health will never again depend on the amount of a family's wealth. And while I will not see the victory, I was able to look forward and know that we will - yes, we will - fulfill the promise of health care in America as a right and not a privilege.

In closing, let me say again how proud I was to be part of your campaign- and proud as well to play a part in the early months of a new era of high purpose and achievement. I entered public life with a young President who inspired a generation and the world. It gives me great hope that as I leave, another young President inspires another generation and once more on America's behalf inspires the entire world.

So, I wrote this to thank you one last time as a friend- and to stand with you one last time for change and the America we can become. At the Denver Convention where you were nominated, I said the dream lives on. And I finished this letter with unshakable faith that the dream will be fulfilled for this generation, and preserved and enlarged for generations to come.

With deep respect and abiding affection,

Ted

Nation Bids Farewell to the Hon. Senator Edward M. Kennedy

By Padmini Arhant

The moment has arrived for the nation to acknowledge the final departure of their tireless and long serving representative, Senator Ted Kennedy, the youngest son of America’s beloved family.

Senator Kennedy, the brave survivor of many family tragedies was a true warrior in various aspects. The Senator zealously battled for the large segments of the society on significant issues and health care was the top priority among them. Senator Kennedy delivered the health care speech with sincere emotion and great concern for the neglected groups in our society.

Please refer to http://www.padminiarhant.com for the remaining content.

Thank you.

Padmini Arhant

Polish American Congress Mourns Passing of “Lion of the Senate” Edward M. Kennedy

Washington DC, August 28, 2009 -- The Polish American Congress, one of the
country’s largest umbrella groups of Polish American organizations, joins
with millions of other Americans to mourn the passing of Sen. Edward M.
Kennedy, a great statesman and a tireless advocate for human rights in the
United States, Poland and around the world.

“The memories held by many Polish Americans of Senator Kennedy are cherished
ones that span his life and our own,” said PAC President Frank Spula in a
statement released Friday in Washington.

When the new Pope, John Paul II, made his first papal journey to Boston in
1979, it was Senator Kennedy who led a joyous throng to meet him at the
airport, Spula recalled.

“Later, when Senator Kennedy was denied a visa by Poland’s communist regime
before Christmas 1986, he persisted in his quest and just five months later
was able to present awards to Zbigniew Bujak and Adam Michnik, organizers of
the Solidarity movement, for their achievements in the spirit of his late
brother Robert,” Spula noted. “When he gave them the Robert F. Kennedy Human
Rights Award, Edward Kennedy praised the pair for their willingness to
‘speak truth to power.’

“But on that trip Kennedy’s own example of speaking truth to power came
when, under surveillance by the communist regime, he took three of his
children, three of his sisters, Robert Kennedy’s widow Ethel, as well as
several of their nieces and nephews to the grave of martyred Rev. Jerzy
Popieluszko, who was killed two and a half years earlier under marshal law,”
Spula recalled. “There he embraced Popieluszko’s elderly parents, good
people of the land with gnarled hands and stooped postures.”

There, as the New York Times reported, Senator Kennedy remarked that, “Like
Father Jerzy’s mother and father, my mother and father lost sons to
senseless violence. Like Father Jerzy’s brothers and sisters, I and my
sisters lost brothers to senseless violence. And I know that my brothers and
sisters, like Father Jerzy, would want all of us to carry on their good
work.”

“Senator Kennedy did just that,” Spula continued. “He fought hard for the
rights of working men and women in the United States and across the globe;
his name became synonymous with the fight for freedom and human rights.”

“You saw that in how he fought for immigration reform and how his voice
thundered a resounding ‘yes’ to Poland’s accession to NATO. He was indeed
the ‘Lion of the Senate’ in Washington, but he was also fierce in his
pursuit of the betterment of the lives of millions of Poles and Polish
Americans.” (MEA)

-- 30--

________________
Polish American Congress
1612 K Street NW, Suite 410
Washington, DC 20006
Tel.: (202) 296-6955
Fax: (202) 835-1565
Web: www.polamcon.org

Senator Kennedy’s representation on many issues remembered nationwide. Among them, the Senator’s relentless effort to bring equality and justice to the poor and underprivileged in the hallmark healthcare, education and immigration was commendable. There is more reason to pass the public option health care reform as a tribute to the deceased Senator.

Senator Kennedy fought for millions in not only his constituency but also the entire nation with passion and power. The Senator extended his service beyond shorelines in ways to resolve the international conflict such as the Northern Ireland peace process. Senator Kennedy was committed and dedicated in helping citizens of stars and stripes achieve their American dream.

The national recognition of Senator Kennedy as ‘The Lion of the Senate’ personified in the Senator’s role in every legislative matter of great value and importance to all people regardless of socio-economic status.

Senator Ted Kennedy lived up to the reputation of the Kennedy legacy in national service. As a true patriot, the Senator deeply cared and carried out the legislative duties and responsibilities diligently and frequently in a bipartisan manner, a monumental achievement in contemporary politics.

Senator Edward M. Kennedy will be truly missed by the nation, while his service commemorated now and in the future as the member of the iconic Kennedy family and the esteemed United States Senate.

No words can possibly heal the moment of sorrow except time.

Time is the best healer and trusting in the brighter tomorrow ease the pain experienced during the natural events in life.

I convey my heartfelt condolences to the Kennedy family, friends and the entire nation.
Thank you.
Padmini Arhant

P.S.
The Lion Of The Senate

We can’t possibly outline the numerous, 300 or more, bills that Senator Edward Moors “Ted” Kennedy wrote and made into law. Most people may not fully appreciate the difficulty in getting legislation passed. Well, if you can’t, think about the trouble the Obama’s Government seems to be having with the Heath care Bill now

The Lion Of The Senate

This death, although we tried to prepare

Has grabbed tightly, people everywhere

Every political figure and every constituent

Lost this iconic figure and his needed involvement

I watched closely and read how he

Organized bipartisanship and caused both sides to agree

No other senator served in this way

Only he made crossing sides seem okay

Forty seven year he worked hard to enact legislation

The Cancer, Disabilities, Civil Rights Acts. Nationality and Immigration

Health Insurance, Children’s Health program, Mental Health Parity

Edward M.
Tribute to Senator Ted Kennedy

The Kennedy family has been riddled with tragedies. The history books are crowded with the many tragic incidences that described this family. Yet with all this, their contribution has been enormous. They never stopped trying to help, to change. Only one of the brothers lived to have grey hair, yet these boys will always be remembered for their grandeur. Ted Kennedy died Aug 25 before midnight. On his dying bed he was living one of his passions. He was trying to get changes in legislation passed that would see his prompt replacement. My deepest sympathy goes out to all the Kennedy Family and friends

Senator Edward Moore “Ted” Kennedy

Shook their hands and reached across the isle

Edward “Ted” Kennedy was versatile

November 7 in 1962

Assigned to the Senate and from there this icon grew

Tragedy came to his brothers very early

Oswald shot and killed JFK then Sirhan shot and killed Bobby

Remorse clouded Ted’s good judgment they say, over these 5 years

Emotions overcame Ted and little could dry his tears

Driving from a party in ‘69 his car broke a bridge

When it overturned in the water, he escaped and fled to a ridge

Abandoning the accident where his passenger had drown

Reported his guilt of fleeing and accepted the mandate of the crown

Darkness plagued Ted and he needed great light

Mounded himself into work and there shone bright

Over the next four decades his records would show

One man who became an icon that both sides will know

Reached out first as a friend to all in the House

Encouraged all other Senators to dispel political grouse

Then get to the root of the problems before they decide

Even chose to stand in the way before them, if tempers will collide

Decades of work, he wrote over 300 bills

Kept busy, they called him “The Lion Of The Senate,” for his skills

Enormous contributions he made to affect all Americans’ lives

No other Senator has done more, I hope his legacy survives

Not through his name alone but the differences he laid

Equality, Civil Rights, universal health care and immigration aid

Dogs were his passion, sailing, fishing and saying “You tried!”

Yesterday, before midnight, Senator Edward Moore “Ted” Kennedy, died

Senator Ted Kennedy

The world knows by now about the passing of Ted Kennedy — the patriarch of a storied family and a man who touched millions of lives. The news adds an undertone of seriousness to preparations for the Organizing for America bus tour that kicks off in Arizona tonight, and a note of sadness to everyone's work.

Kennedy's Greatness: Not Who He Was But What He Did

Love him or loathe him, Sen. Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy was an undeniably great public figure. But his greatness did not spring from who he was -- the surviving one of four, larger-than-life brothers of a powerful American family -- but from what he did -- champion the rights of all Americans, including those not born to such wealth and privilege.

Waking Up

Greetings

I am so grateful to be a part of this...something larger than any one individual...a true sum of the parts. The election of Mr. Obama is truly historic, but it will be our collective energy and effort that will make his presidency transformative.

I am sure I feel the same as many of you. Our country is waking up in order to fully realize its potential. I see more smiles, more kindness, and a real attempt at making connections with others. Even my more conservative colleagues are admitting that the Obama administration can take our beloved America in the right direction.

I am entering my 20th year working directly with youth, the last 13 in a public school setting. Never have I seen students be more interested and involved...and knowledgeable! Working with middle school students on a daily basis regenerates my sense of optimism and faith. Never have I seen young people believe in the possibility of their futures. I have witnessed an amazing transformation in a very short period of time.

In my classroom I have individuals who represent the entirety of our society. The discussions of race, gender, religion, class, and politics have been open and respectful. And with my guidance the disagreements have been instructive. The youth are listening to each other and realizing that the need to get along is vital if they are to inherit a vibrant society and democracy. In a very real way, the youth of America are showing us the way.

I will be providing a first person perspective on life in a public school classroom. I teach special education in a middle school in Lacey, WA. My primary charge is to instruct, mentor, and guide students who have been struggling in school due to their classroom behaviors. My students are labeled with various terms: health impared, emotional and behavioral disordered, conduct disordered, oppositionally defiant, "those kids". Beneath it all are wonderful human beings who present challenges to their teachers and families. But when the day is done and I leave my building I know that they have grown some each day and that they know there are many people in this world who care about their lives.

Federal education policy in the form of No Child Left Behind has done little to improve the state of public education. Lack of funding and an evaluation process divorced from reality are just two factors that leave teachers short of resources and short of breath. School improvements are due mainly to the hard work and dedication of the teachers in the trenches. What I see on a daily basis is true heroism as educators do all they can with ever tightening budgets and ever expanding mandates. Ask yourself one important question: Why did Senator Ted Kennedy feel the need to apologize for No Child Left Behind on the occasion of its one year anniversary?

The Democratic National Convention 2008 –Highlights

My previous blogs have VANISHED (apparently into thin "web" air)!! Oh well, I am not going to spend anytime crying about that. I am also not going backwards (i.e., trying to repost items lost) because the election is less than 60 days away! That being said, I have few exceptions: highlight speeches of the historical 2008 DNC, Obama's acceptance speech, Fact Checking Gov. Sarah Palin and Republican Pres. Nominee John McCain's RNC Acceptance Speeches. With respect to the highlights of the 2008 DNC, I have compiled a list of my favorite speeches with links to the video. The list is in reverse chronological order. If, for some reason, a link is broken, you can always Google the speech or search for it on YouTube.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION

Denver, CO (August 25-28, 2008)

Pres.
Let's Define What LEGACY Is - Who Has It, and Who Doesnt Have It

As of recent..we have been hearing a lot of talk of the Clintons. They have been invading the space of the airways with what they want, how they want it, and who they want it from.I've shared my feelings over and over again about this so I won't repeat anything you've already read. I am going to make some points though.

Wow!

The first night of the Democratic National Convention was absolutely amazing. From Ted Kennedy to Michelle Obama, tonight was full of moments that caused jaws to drop and eyes to tear. You won't find many of those moments at the RNC next week, and I know our convention will only get better. Michelle Obama gave a heartfelt speech that rivals any speech given thus far in the campaign. She definitely has the chops to compete with her husband in that department.

And Ted Kennedy...wow!

He is truly an icon of the Democratic party and of this country. For years he has been a hero to the working class, the underdog, the little guy, the down-trodden...and tonight, he has become a hero to that new generation of Americans watching tonight, which includes me. His promise to be on the Senate floor, still fighting for the American people, next January touched me deeply because it represents one of the essential elements of our party and our country: hope. I am so proud to be a Democrat and an American tonight.

What these two people did tonight in their speeches was phenomenal!

They connected each one of us as Americans with Barack Obama.

For those of us who watched and heard every speaker including both Barack's sister and Michelle's brother tonight, the first night of the Democratic Convention, along with Caroline Kennedy, Claire McCaskill, and many others who worked with Barack in Chicago, we witnessed the greatness of our Democratic Presidential nominee and his family.

Ted Kennedy expressed the love of his family and his country through his deep committment that healthcare for every American is a right. He stood strong and hopeful for his deepest values while his own health stands in jeopardy.

Michelle Obama told of her Dad, her Mom, her brother, her children , and her husband, Presidential nominee Barack Obama, with love, respect, and remarkable emotion and grace that touched a nation as she spoke, "I love this country!"

CSPAN: Ted Kennedy Live In Denver

According to a report at http://www.vadimuspost.com/ted-kennedy-to-appear-live-at-democratic-convention/, CSPAN is saying that Sen. Ted Kennedy will make a surprise, dramatic appearance at the convention this evening. Originally, he was to appear in a video link during a tribute to him during the opening festivities.

Given the nature of his cancer, this may be the last time the party's conscience and the Senate's lion appears at a party convention.

Kennedy's wife says senator is doing well

Senator Edward M. Kennedy, past the midway point in a six-week course of radiation and chemotherapy treatments for a malignant brain tumor, remains upbeat and has been sailing daily following his trips to Boston for treatment.

Each morning, after exercising at his Hyannis Port home, Kennedy is driven to Massachusetts General Hospital for his medical regimen. On the 90-minute drive home, he's been known to place calls on his cellphone to friends and colleagues, including Governor Deval Patrick.

Kennedy's wife, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, sent an optimistic e-mail to family and friends last week, saying the senator was enduring the treatments well.

"The news is really all positive and encouraging," she wrote. "My incredibly strong and resilient husband is handling the treatment very well. The only side effect is fatigue, and that word has never been in Teddy's vocabulary before. But he's learning to cope with it. As I have mentioned to many of you, he is tackling cancer with his trademark grit and determination, and he is doing everything he needs to do to regain his strength and health."

Following a seizure at his home on May 17, Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, which carries a grim prognosis. He underwent surgery at Duke University Medical Center on June 2, a procedure his doctors declared a success. After a week in Durham, N.C., the Massachusetts Democrat returned to his Cape Cod home and began the radiation and chemotherapy.

Kennedy's office has declined to discuss the specifics of his treatment, although doctors not involved with his care said the standard chemotherapy for brain tumors is a pill called temozolomide, which slows the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. Radiation therapy, typically administered five days a week, would involve using a beam directed at the cancerous area.

Brain cancer specialists say doctors would monitor response to the pills and radiation, and, if that approach is not working, patients could choose to switch to more experimental treatments or join a clinical trial. Several people close to Kennedy have said the senator has been optimistic since undergoing surgery at Duke.

"He exercises every morning before we make our trek to Boston, and sails almost every afternoon when we get back to the Cape," the senator's wife wrote in the e-mail, which she sent Wednesday night and which was obtained yesterday by the Globe and the Associated Press. "I have drawn the line at sailing in thunderstorms, but other than that, he's out on the water just about every day. He's making calls, staying in touch with his office staff and colleagues, and still pushing all the issues he cares about."

The Globe reported recently that Kennedy has been increasingly active in healthcare advocacy. He got involved personally in helping Massachusetts seek a Medicaid waiver worth hundreds of millions of dollars, strategizing with the governor and placing phone calls to Bush administration officials. Kennedy's office has also been convening meetings to lay the groundwork for implementing universal healthcare after the next president takes office in January. Staff members for Senator Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, have been participating in the talks.

The Kennedys celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary Thursday, but because they had to travel to Boston for treatment, they were not able to make their traditional sail from New York's Sag Harbor. "We'll save that for next year," Victoria Kennedy wrote.

Instead, they had plans for a day trip on Nantucket Sound and to have their children, grandchildren, and other family members join them for the Fourth of July.

"I thank you all for your many cards, letters, emails and calls of care and concern," she wrote.
A Little Prayer for Ted Kennedy

Sen. Ted Kennedy is undergoing brain surgery today in Durham, North Carolina, at Duke University Medical Center.

Talking about his surgery, Kennedy said, "I look forward to returning to the United States Senate and to do everything I can to help elect Barack Obama as our next president."

Carole

An empty suit? Balderdash

In my blog entry, posted in response to the story "Don't go there, Sen. Clinton", as written by Jay Bookman, I address this "empty suit" accussatoin that some folks make about Sen. Obama. It's balderdash, of course, but fortunately, our candidate is anything but.

-----

As for Obama’s experience, what we’re trying to do here is elect a leader of the Federal Government; not just someone who knows how to attack or fight (which leads to an impasse, like with HRC and WJC over health care reform. Eight years and nothing accomplished!), but someone who knows how to unite people around a common cause, then to accomplish great goals. It does take cooperation in DC to get things done!

Note that Abraham Lincoln had about the same experience level as Obama when he entered the Oval Office and he didn’t turn out too bad as a President. Both Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson had their detractors, even to this day.

If Obama didn’t have great skills to lead, would it make sense for Ted Kennedy to endorse BHO over HRC? With all the weight of the importance of such an endorsement from Ted, Caroline, and Patrick if there was any doubt at all that he would make a great President, why would Ted Kennedy risk such an action? The Lion of the Senate is beholding to no man.

And from Laurence Tribe, arguably one of the most astute Constitutional scholars of our day, a testimony, “I can’t pretend that I had any idea then that he would be a serious presidential candidate — that would have been a crazy thing for anyone to project at that stage of a career — but he was certainly the most all-around impressive student I had seen in decades,” said Tribe, for whom Obama served as a research assistant.

Unfortunately, those who claim Obama is “just an empty suit” shows serious signs of having an empty head!

In November, Obama will defeat McCain by a minimum of 341-197, with 525-13 being possible, if people can get beyond their stupid race concerns.

Incidentally, Obama is not black, he is both white and black. He is simply sporting a “natural tan” and I think if most people were honest with themselves, they would realize that color of skin scores a zero on importance of qualifying a candidate for the Presidency. It matters zero, nada, zilch. Race and gender are simply the issues the under-educated fret over — not even relevant in today’s world.

In November, the down ballots loses for the Repubs will be extensive, leading to a 60-40% majority in both chambers of Congress. Mark my word, it’s going to be a Democratic Party rout come November. Oh happy day.

Send a GET WELL Teddy Bear to Sen. Kennedy

Dear KiDS for Obama across the United States,

As you may have heard, Senator Edward "Teddy" Kennedy, who has been an incredible supporter of Barack Obama and his campaign, is seriously ill.

It would be an incredible gesture on behalf of all the OBAMA kids across America, to send a teddy bear with hand-written "well wishes" note attached (hole punch with ribbon around heck or arm of the bear). He is the LION of the Senate, but he is always a teddy bear at heart.

The mailing address is:

TO: Senator Edward "Teddy" Kennedy, 2400 JFK Federal Building, Boston, MA 02203
FROM: KiDS for OBAMA - (YOUR NAME HERE)

Let's show our support for this man who showed us HIS support.

Thanks,
Rexie

Godspeed Ted Kennedy

My post is very brief tonight. I just want to send my thoughts and prayers to Ted Kennedy and his family. There are so many people in the states of West Virginia and Kentucky who have been the beneficiaries of Ted Kennedy's five decades of service to our nation in the United States Senate. The Kennedy family tradition has always been one of speaking up for equality and justice. It is no small symbol of his commitment to the great ideals of the Democratic Party that Ted Kennedy wholeheartedly endorsed Barack Obama for President. I believe that in his gut, his instincts led him to embrace Barack, the lesser known of the two still standing candidates. Barack Obama exemplifies all that is inspired, all that is possible, in this country we love. I can think of no greater tribute to the brilliant Kennedy legacy than to elect Barack Obama as our next President.

Ted Kennedy, Best Wishes for Recovery

I just heard the news about Ted Kennedy. My best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to his family and to our Nation.

It has been said that everyone remembers where they were when they heard that JFK had been shot. I'm one of those. I was walking down the hall to the Commandant's office, his secretary stepped out of her office and saw me. Almost as if she was in a daze, she turned and addressed me by first name. I knew her from the church we attended, but never expected her to address me by first name on base. Especially since she was probably thirty years my senior. "They've killed the President."

My response seems odd when looking back, but I asked, "Which president?" When she replied that President Kennedy had been shot, I suggested she contact Capt. Bowman immediately for directions. Little did I realize that just a few years later, I would face a similar shock in June of '68 when Bobby was killed after beating Eugene McCarthy in the California Primary.

I had great hope that the "Third Kennedy" would be a unifying agent at the upcoming Democratic Convention.

I have little doubt, but that some of the radical radio talk show hate mongers will rant that the Senator's seizure is God's punishment for the sins of his former lifestyle and Liberal views. Fortunately, I won't be listening to their programs.

For the sake of our nation, my best wishes for a speedy recovery and the ability to continue to serve our country.

Ted Kennedy

Edward Kennedy, the veteran Democratic senator and patriarch of America’s most famous political dynasty, has been airlifted to hospital after what his family describe as a seizure. APMr Kennedy recently endorsed presidential candidate Barack ObamaRead the full article
Our thoughts are with the Kennedy family at this time. Ted Kennedy was one of the first big names to endorse Senator Obama. He has contributed significantly to this campaign. His experience has been very useful within the camp and we really appreciate the sort of positive effect he has had thus far.

God bless him at this time. We hope that he's going to be okay.

Where is Our Leadership? (Has Anyone Asked Illinois?)

This is stunning, and a disappointment...

I wish someone could explain to me why the best candidate we've had for President of the United States continues to have to be drug into the media to defend himself over two individuals. Whether it's a former pastor or real estate developer, why do we continue to see any candidate weather a storm like this with so much as stake right now?

Have we forgotten about the characters in the lives of both Bill & Hillary Clinton? Of John McCain? In our own lives?

Again, it is stunning to see that in the year 2008 we are here on a Tuesday night in the Spring season and our attention remains fixed on this while gas is almost unaffordable, food choices at the grocery store are having to be seriously altered to meet a budget that no longer can sustain it, and jobs that can sustain average Americans are harder and harder to find. We have troops on the ground in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, and all over the world. A soaring trade deficit, national debt, and we are talking about a man not even in the running for the most powerful political office in the world?

Where is our Leadership? Where is the muscle in the Democrat and Republican Parties of the United States? Where are the decent political leaders who should be outraged that Barack Obama is continually being attacked over this mess? Where are any of our leaders?

Are we going to gamble away this wonderful opportunity we have to shake this off, roll up our sleeves, and make a fantastic nation even better?

Still want answers? How about asking Illinois? I ask you. Barack Obama is the junior Senator from your state. Are we to believe that your collective judgment somehow overlooked this man, passing through your State Senate, onto the U.S. Senate, and to the position of Presidential Candidate Frontrunner and you somehow missed whatever secret everyone keeps digging for? Or, can we just say that Senator Obama is a great guy, and we can all follow him together?

Super Delegates: The Reluctant "Elder Statesmen"

We all know that this play looks increasingly like a Greek tragedy. I've already suggested the worst-case scenario. That's the "Train Wreck in the Station" that turns the Denver Democratic Convention into a modern-day "Chicago '68". There is also the more insipid, but similarly destructive possibility for which there is already evidence in the tone of the campaign and polls of Democratic voter attitudes. That is the nominee is selected "free and fair", but fails to win a significant share of other contender's support, allowing McCain to slide through in November. The chances for this outcome could improve the longer this race drags on.
No wonder the pundits are now wringing their hands in search of an elder statesman to save the day. Albert Hunt sees the need for someone to sort out the Michigan/Florida mess. After all, if George Mitchell can hammer out a plan for Northern Ireland and the Middle East, as well as professional baseball, he can certainly work out something for the DNC. I concede that these renegade states are important to the Democrats’ electoral total in November. But solving the problem created by the queue-jumpers may not solve the Clinton-Obama stalemate, only prolong it.

Breaking News: Maria Shriver backs Barack Obama

Breaking News: Maria Shriver backs Barack Obama
In a dramatic moment at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, California First Lady Maria Shriver just strode out onto a stage that had already seen its share of celebrities -- Oprah Winfrey and Stevie Wonder among them -- and announced that she was joining the Kennedy half of the family backing Barack Obama, reports our colleague Mark Z. Barabak, who is there.

More details will be posted shortly and in tomorrow's print edition, but Shriver reportedly was waiting backstage wavering over whether she should make her support public, and then finally strode out on stage. Her husband, Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, earlier this week announced his endorsement for Sen. John McCain.

The Kennedy family has split over the two top Democratic contenders, with Ted Kennedy joined by Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg -- daughter of his brother John F. Kennedy -- and his son, U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, all going with Obama. Ethel Kennedy, widow of Robert F. Kennedy, also went with the Illinois senator.

But Hillary Rodham Clinton picked up the support of three of Robert and Ethel's children -- Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Kerry Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

UPDATE:

-- Scott Martelle

Senator Kennedy on El Piolin

Yesterday, Senator Ted Kennedy was on Piolin por la Mañana, the number one morning radio show in the country, and took some time to talk about Barack's commitment to Latinos, families, and comprehensive immigration reform.

Barack, Senator Kennedy pointed out, has been consistently willing to stand up for the rights of immigrants even when others wouldn't.

Only two senators marched for immigrant rights on May 1, 2006, one in Washington and the other in Chicago. I marched in Washington and Barack Obama marched in Chicago. He was not afraid to stand up when others wouldn't... I'm committed to coming back on the immigration bill and Barack Obama will be with me. He is the one candidate who has said that he can do this in his first term. There's too many people that are living in the shadows. Men and women of dignity who love their families who love their faith. I'm on their side and Barack Obama is on their side.

Here's the full recording of the visit (complete English & Spanish transcript here)...

Last August, Barack had the chance to discuss similar issues with Piolin in person.

You can listen to a full recording of that discussion in the audio player below, but you can hear Barack speak a little bit about his role in the May Day marches in 2006 about eight minutes and twenty seconds in.

Find out more about what how Barack will work to secure our borders, fix our broken immigration system, and respect famlies by reading his full plan for comprehensive immigration reform.

Al Gore - Endorsing New Ideas and Fresh Faces

Whoa. Not just betrayal, but ultimate betrayal. By women everywhere.
I don't know about you, but as a woman, I find that just a teeny bit insulting. Doesn't a female candidate deserve to be judged by the content of her character, rather than the content of her... underwear?
Kennedy's jump aboard the Obama Train!

Somehow I lucked out and was at home to watch this live. It brought back memories from when I was nine and JFK was elected -- of how this country was energized by his courage, diplomacy, heartfelt concern for the underprivileged; my mother quit crying as much over her meager teacher's wages. She went back to school to work on a Master's degree. There was more joy at home.

It was a time when we felt united around common causes. The Kennedy's brought a certain dignity to the White House, the nation; accompanied by humility, gratitude, and respect for those they served.

John and Jacklyn Kennedy always seemed so honored to be our first family. We revered them.

Then just three years later, our hope was crushed. The whole country mourned for days, weeks, and months as we worked through that tragedy. We were dumbfounded -- how could someone do this to our nation?

We did climb back up onto our feet, yet the mourning was always on a low grade simmer.
---
People who want to downplay the importance of an inspiring orator do so at their own peril.

Experience, often over-rated, by old men (or women) who nod wisely but speak stupidly, is trumped by vision.

We've seen enough criticism in the last few weeks. We in the Obama Camp; those who have touched his garment or have shaken his hand, perhaps looked him in the eye -- we know how much this means to Barack, to his future. And not just his, but ours!

He was at once humble and confident, the consummate Statesman. He received these three momentum building, campaign invigorating, sustaining Kennedy endorsements with dignity, honor and resolve.

I am quite certain millions were moved to tears, if not the streaming kind, then certainly the teary-eyed kind. Oh what a glorious day for the Senator from Illinois -- our emerging great Statesman from Illinois. May you carry your torch high above the squabbling as you ascend; voter by voter, city by city, state by state, toward your dream -- for our nation, for you, your family, and for all.

God bless you, Edward, Caroline, and Patrick Kennedy. And God bless you, Senator Barack H. Obama. It was indeed a momentous day for the United States of America. You make Ann and Barack, and your supporters, proud.

What the Kennedy endorsement means to me

I was happy to hear of Ted Kennedy's endorsement today, especially such a symbolic announcement at American University, in front of thousands of young voters. Seeing the daughter of JFK, the brother of JFK, and the nephew of JFK together in support of Obama meant a lot to me because I wasn't alive when JFK was president. Like Obama, I heard about the assassination of JFK from my parents, who explained it to me and remembered exactly where they were when they heard the news.

I don't have a personal frame of reference for the 1960s. So, when baby boomers who came of age in the 60s tell me that Obama is too young and inexperienced, who am I to respond and tell them they're wrong? I just sound like an angry, inexperienced young person.

Kennedy's endorsement was more than symbolic. Hearing from the elder statesman of the Democratic party made me feel empowered to participate in government. Kennedy is telling all of us that it's ok to get involved, and that we're not naive or foolish to support Barack Obama.

Obama told us this evening that Kennedy's endorsement was a validation to him that we must "dream big dreams". And as thousands of baby boomers consider the future of the country, I feel that Kennedy gives a validation to me as well.

I might be younger, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.

To the older generation - don't believe the lie. You were not wrong to be optimistic. And we're ready now. It will be different this time, if you stand strong and don't let fear defeat us. Don't become a neo-conservative. Don't lose your idealism - our nation's future depends on your trust in young people like me.

I am bringing a baby into the world this year. I want to bring the next generation into a country that is led by someone with integrity, strength, wisdom, courage, and the support of the American people. I know that Barack Obama will not be popular with everyone, but he will be able to lead a "new majority" (as Kathleen Sebelius called it) to solve the problems facing our nation.

Barack Obama: The New JFK

On this great day for the campaign when we received the endorsements of the reverred Kennedy Family, it may be a good thing to remember that JFK's speechwriter and confidant - Ted Sorensen, was already on board several months ago. Here's a great editorial that he wrote about what he perceives to be the parallels between his former boss and Barack Obama - the next President of the United States...

Ted Kennedy to endorse Obama on Monday.

Wow. This is huge, folks. Two Kennedy endorsements in as many days.

Here's Mark Halperin of Time magazine's reasons why the Kennedy endorsement will have a very positive impact for Obama:

HALPERIN’S TAKE: Six Reasons Why the Kennedy Endorsement is a Big Deal
While endorsements don’t usually matter much, Edward Kennedy’s does because:

1. He has a huge following with Hispanics, a big deal in California and other Super Tuesday states, and one of Obama’s weaknesses.

2. The symbolic Kennedy family thing — the ultimate message of change, viability, Democratic legitimacy, and youthful excitement.

3. The national press will be obsessed with the story for days and days to come, with no downside for Obama; the local press coverage when Kennedy travels for Obama will be ginormous.

4. It sends a message to other senators and superdelegates that it is OK to be for Obama — they don’t have to be afraid of the Clintons.

5. He has a huge following among working-class, traditional Democrats, one of Obama’s weaknesses.

6. He has a huge following among union households, another of Obama’s weaknesses.

[Source: http://thepage.time.com/halperins-take-five-reasons-why-the-kennedy-endorsement-is-a-big-deal/]

Seriously, the NY Times is horrible sometimes

Would any other paper than the NY Times try to dillute the Kennedy endorsement of Sen. Obama? Underneath the headline that Sen. Kennedy is endorsing him, this is the article.

Yeah. That's right, omg, it's like the Kennedy family is totally fighting over who should take the JFK legacy. Except, not really, because as we all now, the brother and daughter of JFK are supporting Sen. Obama. I used to like the Times, but they are really making me angry with their increadibly biased coverage of this primary.

Obama '08

I'm so happy that it's been confirmed that Ted Kennedy is going to endorse Sen. Obama! Here is the link. I think it's great that the establishment characters are obviously being inspired by Sen. Obama, just like the rest of us. I also think it says something that they are acknowledging that Sen. Obama is the best chance for the Democrats to win the Presidency in '08!

I've always loved Sen. Kennedy! He just seems like a really likeable and real guy, and this is probably why he chose to endorse Sen. Obama - like attracts like.

Obama '08!

Rah! Rah! Sis-Boom-Bah!

It's the end of the week. sigh I'm tired. I need to save my energy for spreading the word about Barack, this country's next President. Ok, I'm sounding a tad like a cheerleader here, and Lord knows I'm not a cheerleader. I couldn't fit into one (or two) of those little pleated skirts, and the pom-poms would get stuck in my wheels if I was in my chair. Did you ever try to roll a wheelchair with pom-poms in your hands? Rah! Rah! Aaaggghhh!
I've heard the whining about Barack's lack of experience, but he has the experience that counts. He worked the Chicago community, he did the big-name college gig, he's even had a few years of the state and federal political process. Just enough years, I think, to teach him the big lessons, a few of the smaller lessons, and not turn him into a jaded, DC wheeler-dealer. From where I sit, I think he approaches his responsibilities as a leader and a representative of his public with grace, style (ok let's forget that cheesy bathing suit shot; damn paparazzi), intelligence, compassion, and fresh ideas. That, friends, is what counts in my book. Look, I cried when Paul Wellstone died, and my favorite liberal lion Ted Kennedy still floats my boat (ok, so I mixed a metaphor, shoot me). Barack is one more reason for me to have faith in my old-guard, Democratic, with a capital D, ideals. God bless him.
I like what Barack says. I like what he has done so far. I like what he stands for and reperesents. I like his astute, intelligent equal in Michelle. That's enough for me and it should be enough for you. At least enough to get you to check out www.BarackObama.com and then help me spread the word. That includes my Minnesota friends and cohorts (you know who you are). And, if you happen to be in the Downingtown area, I could use some help pushing my chair. Someone has to do it if I'm gonna be twirling these damn pom-poms.
Sue :)
