Obama St. Patricks Day t-shirts, Updates, and Nobody Messing With Joe

It's been quite a while since I updated this blog, but felt like enough has happened recently that an update is due. I've been busy following all the recent events with the economy and of course I watch Obama's speeches when they happen. This past one inspired me to not only create some stuff around the whole "nobody messes with Joe" slogan, but also made me start a new blog devoted to all the products that end up being created when events like that happen.

My most recent blog is about another seemingly popular topic that comes around this time of year. I remember last year, Irish Obama stuff was all over the place during St. Patrick's Day. I don't see things slowing down in regards to this love of both green beer and Obama, so I wrote an article on Barack Obama's St. patrick's Day t-shirts. It's interesting that on the site I use for all my designs, "Obama Irish t-shirts" are the very first thing you see on their St Patricks Day t-shirts page. He's got to be poplular if he's getting that much attention. It makes me with I had designed some shamrock'ed out designs myself. Maybe next year :/

In other news, I think Obama's first 4 days of being in office were sensational. There were so many reversals of Bush's laws that happened in such a short period of time that it was amazing to witness. The fact that he jumped in and changed things right off the bat makes me think more and more that he's got an idea of the direction he wants to take things toward. I think Bush not only lacked direction, but with what direction he had, he was poorly misguided.

Obama's Change.gov is also another major shift in the way of government. There's something truly beneficial to having all the expenses of government in the close scrutiny of the eyes of its citizens. My only hope is that not only do they keep the information public, but that they also make a way to comment and/or submit feedback on various expenses. I have a feeling the large US population will be able to spot waste more efficiently than a handful of people in the whitehouse.

I'm going to try to update this more often as I get the time, but until then, I wish everyone who reads this the best in these crazy times.

Where's my T-Shirt? Part Deux

So I've seen a few others asking the same question. I went to my.barackobama.com on Nov. 5, the day after the election, just on a whim...curious to see if they had already updated the site. Of course they had, and the new front page was asking for donations to the DNC. In appreciation, I would receive a special "2008 Victory T-shirt". I happily donated (of course, the t-shirt was more motivation). But I'm wondering if I will receive my shirt months later as others have remarked. I'm sure they've been inundated with donations for these shirts, but I would hope that they were ready for the surge of donations and were ready to send out shirts as soon as the donations were made. Are they waiting to send them en masse at a later date? It's been 20 days and I haven't received it yet, but I'll hold on to my "hope"....

But I do know that I am going to skip out on orchestra practice on Tuesday so I can plunk down and watch CNN for 7 hours straight. =D

As a UK citizen I unfortunately cannot vote on November 4. However, after having lived in the States for a couple of years, I was keen to somehow get involved in the movement and this is my way of contributing to the campaign and spreading Obama's message.

My grown son was born with Down syndrome and grew up included in the mainstream of our community and public school classrooms with the support and encouragement he needed to show us his true potential. The crashing economy will have a huge effect on adults with disabilities as well as children growing up who deserve the same or better opportunities than my son enjoyed.

I believe that it is important for us to speak up and be visible in our communities so that our neighbors and extended family know we respect Barack Obama and trust him to lead us through the present economic crisis, deal with other pressing priorities that affect every person in our family and neighborhood.

You can make a difference in this election even if you cannot donate money to the campaign. Speak up and speak out about why families of adults with Down syndrome and other disabilities support our candidates, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Post pictures of your sons and daughters with the candidates and create videos for YouTube. Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper. We do not trust the rock star Sarah Palin to be an effective or informed advocate for our grown sons and daughters or the average child with Down syndrome.

My Middle Name Is Hussein

With the New York Times article and now syndicated articles ALL OVER THE WORLD, I am very excited to say that I was there in (close to) the beginning of this movement to change my middle name to Hussein. I saw many others doing so on this very website, in blogs, and I became so inspired that I decided to create a t-shirt dedicated to it. The main purpose was to help America open up dialogue and not sweep it under the rug. Barack's middle name IS Hussein, and it's sweet and beautiful. I challenge you all to also change your Middle names to Hussein (at least for blogging) to open up further awareness. I was also excited to get a call from a reporter for a newspaper in France, to get my opinion on the matter. The article will come out on Thursday. Mark Hussein Montalbano has a Hussein t-shirt for sale. I don't have one yet, but we agreed to swap a blog post for a shirt. So here it is. Mark says the following about the shirt:<p> Barack Hussein Obama. It's a beautiful name, which means handsome or beautiful. Barack Hussein Obama, despite the birth-given name, is not Muslim, though, the name symbolizes his openness to all walks of life. Acceptance. This Obama t-shirt was designed to celebrate his birth-given name. It's more of an effort to celebrate acceptance of anyone's name, but it was created mainly because of the fact that our soon-to-be President has many times been unfairly smeared because of the name he goes by. Marietta tavern owner Mike Norman says the T-shirts he's peddling, featuring cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana, with "Obama in '08" scrolled underneath, are "cute." But to a coalition of critics, the shirts are an insulting exploitation of racial stereotypes from generations past.

"It's time to put an end to this," said Rich Pellegrino, a Mableton resident and director of the Cobb-Cherokee Immigrant Alliance. He was among about 15 people who protested outside Mulligan's Bar and Grill Tuesday afternoon against the sale of the "racist and highly offensive" shirts.

Word of the controversy drew native Mariettan Pam Lindley, 47, to show up in support of the protesters.

"I don't want people to think this is what Marietta is all about," she added, pointing at tavern.

Two protesters, who stationed themselves near the tavern entrance, approached Norman and asked him to stop the T-shirt sales. He told them he won't and asked them to leave his property, though the confrontation did not escalate.

Just down the street from Marietta's famous Big Chicken, Mulligan's has carved a provocative niche in an increasingly multicultural area, thanks to its owner's ultra-conservative political views. If you live in Marietta, it's impossible not to know what's on Norman's mind, as he posts his views on signs in front of Mulligan's.

Among his recent musings: "I wish Hillary had married OJ," "No habla espanol -- and never will" and the standard "I.N.S. Agents eat free."

"I'm saying out loud what everyone in this town whispers," Norman said in an interview before Tuesday's protest.

Whatever residents think of the signs, organized opposition to his blunt commentaries -- ongoing for 16 years -- had been nonexistent. No longer, says Pellegrino, who, though familiar with Norman's politics, said he was still surprised by the stark imagery of the Obama T-shirts.

"There's a lot of people hurt by this," he said.

Norman said those offended are "hunting for a reason to be mad" and insisted he is "not a racist."

Norman said he sees nothing wrong with depicting Obama as Curious George. "Look at him . . . the hairline, the ears, he looks just like Curious George," Norman said. He said he did not design the shirts himself but bought them through a Web site.

He said he views it as just coincidence that the character on the T-shirt is a monkey. Norman also said proceeds raised from sales will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Nation of Islam and the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials were among the organizations represented at Tuesday's rally.

"Mulligan's is promoting and selling racially offensive T-shirts, and Marietta and Cobb County residents and taxpayers abhor and cannot condone, any longer, this type of divisive and incendiary behavior in our community," said Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of GALEO.ay more???

So yesterday was Valentine's Day and I received candy and a bunny from my son and his dad, but I also received a pleasant surprise. My son's dad had ordered one of the Obama '08 t-shirts and wore it out to dinner last night. Now I should start by saying that Oregon's primary isn't until May 20th so there hasn't been much advertising done around here, but what a reaction we received at McGrath's Fish House. Everyone commented on this shirt. From the waitstaff to the people waiting for a table; they all had comments of encouragement, solidarity, and curiosity of where they too could get such a cool shirt. What a fantastic Valentine's Day of hope. For $20 or $25 you too could be a walking billboard of support for our choice for the next president of the United States. I created a t-shirt design that I am hoping to generate support for around the Virginia Tech campus and elsewhere through a network or relatives and family friends. Please let me know if you would be interested in buying one of these shirts (I'm not sure what the exact price will be yet but it will be under $10) and all proceeds will be donated to the campaign. The design is my current profile picture, however, I am planning on changing the colors to shades of green rather than blue to support "thinking green." remember marketing mix: buy obama gear & get it fast

i ordered my obama gear a weak ago with the fear that my obama gear may not arrive until the weekend of the primary. as it turns out, yesterday my complete order is displaying that it shipped. excellent news! the store warns against a two or three week delay, but perhaps my order size or location was flagged... who knows?

when i didn't receive the delivery today, i called to get a tracking number because UPS from the ohio warehouse should have been here already. i was told there had been a computer glitch and my order had not shipped. in talking to the customer service rep, however, i discovered that by upgrading from UPS ground to EXPRESS SHIPPING, i could receive in-stock items within two or three days! the additional cost was nominal given my order amount. with postal increases on irregular packages, always price check UPS or FedEx before assuming the savings is worth the extra wait.

all in all, if you read my previous blog... i am very concerned with what i see as a lack of mobilization in ohio. merchandising was just one thing i had in mind.

to get gear faster, knock-offs are sold on ebay. keep in mind that anything bought through the obama store is a donation to the campaign which is why t-shirts cost twice as much. this means directly funding the battle against clinton attacks. a win-win! however, to assure you arm the team with resources in a timely manner, upgrade to EXPRESS SHIPPING.

huge oversight in merchandising. by now, the marketing folks should have already invested in meeting demand by addressing the supply issues as well as the online store distributor's problem in expediting orders in a timely fashion. i was told by the warehouse that they do not have the staff to expedite in-stock orders quicker and they are unable to advertise the guaranteed EXPRESS SHIPPING because it would likely result in an influx of requests that they could not meet.

if we are willing to use our bodies as billboards, whomever is in charge of merchandising should be overcoming all obstacles to accommodate.

TO RECAP: I AM AWARE THAT WHEN YOU PAY FOR SECOND DAY EXPRESS SHIPPING THROUGH THE OBAMA STORE, YOU WILL RECEIVE MERCHANDISE IN 2-3 DAYS INSTEAD OF 2-3 WEEKS. I PERSONALLY HAVE HAD A SIGN IN MY KENTUCKY YARD FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS!!! FEEL FREE TO PLACE ORDERS... DON'T SELECT USPS OR UPS GROUND.

When you are placing a large order as I did, you'll find the additional cost to be nominal. Call to upgrade to EXPRESS SHIPPING for orders previously placed. I was told this is not widely advertised because, if everyone requested EXPRESS SHIPPING, they would not be able to meet EXPRESS needs. IF SOMETHING YOU WANT IS ON BACKORDER, IT WILL SHIP SEPARATELY at a later date.

Targeting Our Nation's Youth with Cool Obama T-Shirt Designs

Why is it so difficult to reach out to the youth of my generation? Many of them have become consumed by My Space pages, Blogs, and Hollywood stereotypes. It’s hard to compete with the flashy disbursement of hype and entertainment found across the internet and school hallways. I don't even understand how kids at under the legal working age have found a way to accessorize their lifestyle with high fashion brand names like Louie Vuitton hand bags. I guess it’s no different than my parents generation where wearing a shirt with a rainbow was their statement of a unified belief - a symbol of idealism.

I was born in between generation X/Y and I speak both languages. I understand what it is like to make a statement through what I wore and have others make comments about it. In some respect, this is the natural phenomenon of stereotypes, a characteristic of human judgment that I have recently come to terms with. When I was in grade school I wore brand names of my favorite skateboard companies. This showed all my classmates that I was involved in skateboarding and that if they too where involved in skateboarding, then we would have something in common - we spoke the same language.

It is amazing how much of an impact visual appearance has on the psyche. Watch a football game on television and feel the intensity in the crowed of a packed stadium divided by the colors of each team. As an artist I have always believed that you can influence society through an artist’s experience, much like entering a cathedral filled with gold iconography and motifs. It is truly amazing. When the hippies of my parents' generation wore their flowers and braids, held up the two finger peace signs and pointed at their rainbow t-shirts, they were making a statement. This statement changed our governmental awareness and would resonate in American history forever.

So what is the statement of my generation? It has nothing to do with Louie Vuitton. So what are the kids proud of? What is their statement? During this next presidential campaign, my friends at APB Clothing and I are making efforts to shift the paradigm and reach out to our nation's youth. We have created a line of cool Barack Obama t-shirts that kids would actually wear. This is their chance to make a statement and be heard without compromise to their culture. We are reaching out to our generation - we speak the same language - we are going to make a difference.

This is a great idea... a site featuring fan generated top 10 Barack Obama t shirts. The official shirts are nice, but I don't personally feel they show the unique qualities of each person who wears them, so naturally, supporters have been creating their own to do just that. I can't wait to see what all designs develop in the next year and a half.

Obama Store Order

I placed an order from the official Obama store on February 10, and it still hasn't shipped. I generally try to be patient about these things, but I really would like to get these things before our March 3 meeting.

So, I called customer service at 800.844.3739 and spoke with a gentleman named Justin.

Justin told me that they were out of medium t-shirts in both colors, but they hoped to get some in from the Obama campaign next week. I asked if there were any small shirts, that I could substitute, and explained that I really wanted the other materials for a campaign event I'm hosting. He took my number and called me back about 10 minutes later. He tells me that there are small shirts available, and that he would try to get my order shipped tomorrow.

I love it when I have good customer service experiences like this!

I definitely won't hesitate to place my next order with them for a bunch more signs and stickers.
