“Goodbye Reagan Democrats” is the title of a rather vitriolic column by pollster Stanley Greenberg in the Nov. 11th New York Times. Brian Dickerson has a good column in the Nov. 12th Free Press, responding to it. Here are some excerpts from Greenberg‘s column.

I’m finished with the Reagan Democrats of Macomb County in suburban Detroit after making a career of spotlighting their middle-class anger and frustrations about race and Democratic politicians. …

For more than 20 years, the non-college-educated white voters in Macomb County have been considered a “national political barometer.” … After Ronald Reagan won the county by a 2-to-1 margin in 1984, … I conducted focus groups that “found that these working-class whites interpreted Democratic calls for economic fairness as code for transfer payments to African-Americans.” So what do we think when Barack Obama, an African-American Democrat, wins Macomb County by eight points? …

Before the Democratic convention, barely 40 percent of Macomb County voters were “comfortable” with the idea of Mr. Obama as president, far below the number who were comfortable with a nameless Democrat. But on Election Day, nearly 60 percent said they were “comfortable” with Mr. Obama. About the same number said Mr. Obama “shares your values” and “has what it takes to be president.”

Given Macomb’s history, this story helps illustrate America’s evolving relationship with race. … But focusing on the ways that Macomb County has become normal and uninteresting misses the extraordinary changes taking place next door in Oakland County — a place that played a bigger role in Mr. Obama’s success and perhaps in an emerging national Democratic ascendancy.

While Macomb County is home to the white middle class that America’s auto industry made possible, Oakland County is home to the affluent, business-oriented suburbanites of Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills, some of the richest townships in America. Just a quarter of Macomb County residents have college degrees, but more than 40 percent do in Oakland. …

Oakland County has formed part of the Republican heartland in Michigan and the country. … Over the past two decades, Oakland County began to change, as an influx of teachers, lawyers and high-tech professionals began to outnumber the county’s business owners and managers. Macomb has been slow to welcome racial diversity, but almost a quarter of Oakland’s residents are members of various racial minorities.

These changes have produced a more tolerant and culturally liberal population, uncomfortable with today’s Republican Party. … On Tuesday, Oakland County voters gave Mr. Obama a 57 percent to 42 percent victory over John McCain. … That helped form one of the most important new national changes in the electorate: Mr. Obama built up striking dominance in the country’s growing, more diverse and well-educated suburbs.

So, good riddance, my Macomb barometer. Four years from now, I trust we will see the candidates rush from their conventions to Oakland County, to see the new America.

Last weekend, the California Obama Campaign held a rally phonebank at an Oakland park. We are fired up to do it again next weekend bigger and better.

Over 300 supporters gathered at an Oakland city park, kicking off the rally with music and speakers. Then we got to work. Volunteers split up into groups calling different battleground states and relaxed on the grass while making calls to swing state voters.

Groups of friends and families enjoyed beautiful, sunny weather and were excited about the opportunity to make such a big difference in such a great setting. We had a bouncer and art table for the kids, Obama gear to buy, balloons, music, and local food vendors who set up shop next to the park.

In less than 3 hours, we made over 16,000 calls - more than 5000 calls an hour! We're fired up to do it bigger and better this weekend. Join us at our SF Rally on Saturday and make a difference in the final days of this election.

Eklectyk Creative Media has released an innovative music video for the group, Napalm Clique, in support of Barack Obama. The video begins with an excerpt from his "A More Perfect Union" speech, and launches into a multimedia celebration for the political candidate. The video-editing and creativity behind this video have truly raised the bar for independent Hip Hop artists. In this production, real Hip Hop is used as a vehicle to inspire youth to vote and become involved in national politics.

It was last year when Obama came to Oakland. I remember I was excited as I drove there with my mom. When we got there, finding a parking space was pretty difficult. Finally though, we made it to the rally. It was jam packed and HOT. We were far from the front and had no way of seeing him. Only people with special tickets could get in the front. That didn't matter to my mom. She held firm to my hand as we squeezed our way closer to the front. But the closer we got, the tighter the squeeze. Finally, we couldn't go forward any further. There was no big screen so the majority of the people would not see him. However, my dearest mother offered to let me on her shoulders when he came out. I was going to see him!!!

I just want to thank you for the children of Hawaii that you so deeply care about. Although I live in California and graduated in the early 1970s, I still carry and fondly remember my 6th grade elementary school teacher, Mr. Bray at Lockwood Elementary School in Oakland, CA.

My mother died the year before I entered the 6th grade and I was so depressed when I returned to school that I was no longer interested in learning. Mr. Bray was a very caring, patient and hard working young white male that taught my mixed race classroom of middle class students. He made learning fun and turned history, math, the arts & sciences into living processes that kept us interested in learning. No test could have ever done what Mr. Bray did for me in 1966-67, a lost little Black girl. He was determined to re-ignite my love of education and to improve my future career chances by helping me to believe in myself and to earn a good education.

So I applaud and thank you Victor from Laupahoehoe, HI. For the sake of our nation's children, PLEASE do not give up on your passion to teach. Some people may not know it yet, but we will really need you to help change the way our educational system runs when we take our government back.

My fellow Americans,

The title of this post comes from a t-shirt I witnessed adorning the torso of a collegiate Obama supporter at the Oakland rally on St. Patrick's Day. Seeing that shirt, looking around at the myriad colors and people filling the square to overflowing, hearing the Senator's name chanted over and over as the anticipation of his arrival grew to a fever pitch (not unlike that of a rock concert or college football game) I found myself overcome by a strange thought...

This guy might actually win.

Don't get me wrong. I am a dyed-in-the-wool optimist (and an idealist at that). I respect the Senator immensely and my respect grows with every speech I hear, every stand he takes on every issue, every smile he flashes to the cameras, every coy answer he gives to the media vultures who continue to marginalize him like they would a third-party candidate. But to be perfectly honest, I was content to spend the next year-plus of my life on a fool's errand, content to spread the Senator's name and good will across the land, to build a foundation for the "real" campaign surely to come in 2012 (should Hillary lose). But as I wandered the grounds of the Oakland Civic Center on Saturday afternoon, the optimist inside me was transformed into a full-fledged delusional zealot. Sitting here in the aftermath of that 10,000-plus-person political paradise, I dare you to tell me this guy CAN'T win.

I face the grumblings of co-workers who spot my Obama '08 shirt as I walk into the office on Tuesday afternoon after a long weekend. "That'll be a collector's item one day," is the common refrain. I laugh to myself. I keep my mouth shut. They'll find out soon enough that this is for real. This is actually happening. And there will be no Al Gore and Leo DiCaprio to save them from the big, scary man telling the big, scary truth...

People are finally ready for this. Not every last American soul, but enough to make all the difference. Democrats are sick of the in-fighting, sick of the back-stabbing, sick of the oatmeal candidates, sick of the whole darn thing. They are ready for something new, and that it what the Senator brings to the table, on so many levels. Republicans are sick of themselves. The Neo-Cons are the illegitimate child of a once-proud family that can trace its ancestors all the way back to Lincoln, and the family is about to disown them. In many ways, they already have. Once hard-line GOP mouthpieces abandoned the right during the '06 midterms, flocking toward the middle in a vain attempt to out-flank the Dems attacking from the far left, and they figure to go even more moderate come primary season. McCain? Giuliani? These guys are running scared. And now is the perfect time to strike.

Nay-sayers say it's too early, that this will play itself out by January and we'll be left right where we started, pulling hard for Clinton, Part Deux. But seriously, does any self-respecting liberal really want that? This is our candidate, and as we get closer to the real heat of this campaign, the people will come to understand that he is the best candidate, not just this year, but in a long, long while.

We have been waiting for this since before I was born. I came along nine years after RFK, 14 years after JFK, 33 years after FDR. I have no concept of what it is to truly admire the leaders of this nation. I have no examples of prudence and honesty and integrity from which to choose my heros of the political arena. (My idolatry is typically reserved for athletes.) As the old saying goes: You shouldn't fall in love with a politician, you're bound to have your heart broken. Well, I can feel myself falling, and though I try to maintain a calm demeanor, I want to scream it from the rooftop: THAT'S MY GUY!

As my friend and I were joining the line for the Oakland rally (which wrapped around two city blocks at one point), a teenage girl called to me from her mother's minivan, which had pulled up by the curb. She asked what was with all the hub-bub and I told her about Senator Obama. "Who?" she asked incredulously, as if I had made up the name. "Barack Obama is speaking at City Hall," I repeated. "Is he famous?" she asked after conferring with her mother. "Well," I said. "He's running for President." And he's going to win.

The Oakland rally was a huge success (as you can see). No matter who I talk to about the event, almost the first thing I hear about is the diversity of the crowd.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama brought his platform of audacious hope Saturday to the largest and most diverse crowd to pack downtown Oakland in recent memory.

It's becoming more and more clear that Barack's message resonates with people of all backgrounds. This is just another example of how Barack Obama is bringing people together instead of embracing the politics of divide.

I took BART across the Bay to see (well, actually just hear - he was in a pit rather than up on a podium, so I couldn't see him) Senator Obama. What a great turnout he had so early in the campaign!

I do have suggestions:

1) Practice the spiel a bit more - there were some portions (health care especially) that sounded like the thoughts were scripted and not natural thoughts.

2) Get a platform, cherry picker bucket, or a stack of boxes to stand up and allow your supporters to make eye contact with you when you come visit us next time.

3) Make the sale more plain for folks - we want action steps. What can we do? Ask for money. Ask us to go to the local MeetUps. Ask us to talk with our neighbors and start organizing our own Barack Obama for President clubs.

It is early ... you'll learn. Thank you for running!

My Obama Mania and the Oakland Rally

I can't believe it has been only a month since Barack Obama officially proclaimed his candidacy for president on February 10th. That's the day I went to his website and signed up for the Sacramento for Obama Group. Since then we had our first organizing meeting on February 22 where 55 of us introduced ourselves, formed committees and broke up into our respective committees to make plans for our future actions.

I'm on the Communications Committee for our group. We had a day-long meeting at Richard and Suzanne-Marie's house the following weekend in Placerville and determined who our targeted audience was going to be for our communications effort and how best to reach them.

Our campaign website was up and running and we produced our first Update newsletter which was emailed to 137 members on March 6th. Our first local gathering of Obama supporters at the Blue Cue in Sacramento on March 10th had more than 200 people in attendance, along with media from 3 local news stations.

The second Update newsletter was produced as a special edition for the upcoming Rally with Obama in Oakland on the 17th. That one was emailed to 234 members on March 14th.

Our Sacramento group had our own t-shirts made but they didn't yet have any in my size so I ordered one, cut out the logo then sewed it onto one of my own red shirts. It turned out great and I was quite proud of my handiwork.

I was so excited the night before that I could not sleep. I finally got up at 3 am to read email hoping that would make me sleepy. After a 3 hour nap, I was up again at 7am preparing to head down to Natomas to meet up with the rest of our caravan. The first shift of 35 volunteers from our Sacramento group left Natomas earlier at 8am. Our group of 15 people departed at 10:30. We were sure glad we did!

Governor Schwarzenegger's act this week of moving the California primary next year to February 5th is great for Senator Obama. First, his huge rally yesterday in Oakland had excellent timing...I love that the press was reporting the new primary date at the same time it was covering the success of the rally. Linking the two events I'm sure will stick with California voters, as it does with me. Second, the '08 campaign (for all candidates) was losing its luster with me: their was all the new-campaign buzz when the candidates made their announcements, the Geffen brou-ha-ha, and then Selma that had me focused on the primaries. But then all my attention went to Scooter, Walter Reed, and fired US Attorneys (in fact I didn't even post a blog here for weeks). It's nice to have my attention directed back towards something positive instead. Finally, I'm a West Coast voter. I think Democrats on the West Coast are often labeled as surfers, hippies or tree-huggers (or all three at once). I like knowing that the East Coast-central media will have to give some early campaign coverage to every-day people who care about this election and who are not automatically throwing their love to Senator Clinton. There are voters, for goodness sakes, who live further west than Iowa.

Oakland rally

Just got back from Barack Obama's rally in front of Oakland City Hall. This was his first major Bay Area rally since he announced his candidacy. The crowd numbered about 5,000 to 8,00 or more (I couldn't tell precisely, and numbers-estimating is hard, given that we were in th middle of the crowd). He was introduced by Oakland mayor and former U.S. Rep. Ron Dellums and a returning Iraq war veteran.
His message centered on principal issues of improving the economy for the broadest segments of the population, calling for national health care in the first term of an Obama presidency, and ending the war in Iraq. This last element drew the loudest applause.
He also recognized the work of U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, who often stood alone in Congress in her early opposition to U.S. military involvement in Iraq.
He built up to greater applause toward the end of his speech, when he recalled all the great efforts in the U.S. to "form a more perfect union." These included the abolition of slavery, the rise of women's suffrage, successful union organizing, and the struggles of immigrants.
The event drew what I would call Obama's power base, which at least in the urban areas includes students, progressive, college-educated professionals, teachers, unionists, and average city dwellers. He will need to extend this base significantly to win in '08.
This rally was a perfect start in a part of the country that he will surely do well in the primaries. With California now an early, decisive primary state (moving from June elections to February), this state is a natural for Obama to win.
I'd love to hear more about how people feel his message is getting across: what are the most effective points? where can he improve his points?

Getting to the Oakland Rally

I've been figuring out how to get to rally without too much hassle. This is what I've come up with:

- Drive from San Mateo to the 5th and Mission garage (at 833 Mission Street, between 4th and 5th Streets) in San Francisco.

- Park there and hop on the Powell Street BART station.

- It's just a short block from the station to City Hall Plaza.
