Today we held the memorial service for my 24 year old daughter in-law and her unborn baby girl. Jenny did not have health insurance and was not properly treated at for-profit ER. Within 24 hours she went to the next ER and was diagnosed with severe double pneumonia, Septic shock and Respitory failure and laid in an ICU unit for the next two months at a cost of $22,000. a day.

When there was no hope of survival we removed Jenny from life support and said our good byes to this beautiful young woman. She left behind a husband (my son) and a two and half year old daughter. Jenny's crime and death sentence was that she could not afford health-care.

In the richest country in the world our Jenny died.

Don't allow another family to suffer the pain that we have. Stand up for the Public Option, stand up for what you believe in, get out of your chairs, your house, your comfort zone and speak out for this injustice. In the richest country in the world Jenny died....don't let there be another Jenny..

I noticed that the more we go deep in President Obama agenda, the more we do encounter a stronger resistance, not only from pure Republican machine, but also from some Democrats who still not understand the message of change. We should fight and achieve our objectives in Healthcare, Education, Energy, and keep the economy going. The more we demonstrate our focus, all our opponents will finally believe in our commitment, and it will be difficult to continue their resistance movement.

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 - Since everyone is at least a bit familiar with John McCain’s record when it comes to strolling through a market in Baghdad with hundreds of his closest guards, or how he wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years (except when he flip flops on that).

But not that many really, truly know just how horrific his voting record is when it comes to the troops. And it is pretty consistent – whether it is for armor and equipment, for veteran’s health care, for adequate troop rest or anything that actually, you know, supports our troops.

This is chock full of links to the roll call votes, and the roll call votes have links to the actual underlying bills and amendments. I present this so that there is support and things that can be rattled off when saying that McCain is not a friend of the military. Feel free to use it as you want, but this can be tied into the "Double Talk Express". But here is a very quick statement - John McCain skipped close to a dozen votes on Iraq, and on at least another 10 occasions, he voted against arming and equipping the troops, providing adequate rest for the troops between deployments and for health care or other benefits for veterans.

In mid 2007, Senator Reid noted that McCain missed 10 of the past 14 votes on Iraq. However, here is a summary of a dozen votes (two that he missed and ten that he voted against) with respect to Iraq, funding for veterans or for troops, including equipment and armor. I have also included other snippets related to the time period when the vote occurred.

September 2007: McCain voted against the Webb amendment calling for adequate troop rest between deployments. At the time, nearly 65% of people polled in a CNN poll indicted that "things are going either moderately badly or very badly in Iraq.

July 2007: McCain voted against a plan to drawdown troop levels in Iraq. At the time, an ABC poll found that 63% thought the invasion was not worth it, and a CBS News poll found that 72% of respondents wanted troops out within 2 years.

March 2007: McCain was too busy to vote on a bill that would require the start of a drawdown in troop levels within 120 days with a goal of withdrawing nearly all combat troops within one year. Around this time, an NBC News poll found that 55% of respondents indicated that the US goal of achieving victory in Iraq is not possible. This number has not moved significantly since then.

February 2007: For such a strong supporter of the escalation, McCain didn’t even bother to show up and vote against a resolution condemning it. However, at the time a CNN poll found that only 16% of respondents wanted to send more troops to Iraq (that number has since declined to around 10%), while 60% said that some or all should be withdrawn. This number has since gone up to around 70%.

June 2006: McCain voted against a resolution that Bush start withdrawing troops but with no timeline to do so.

May 2006: McCain voted against an amendment that would provide $20 million to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for health care facilities.

April 2006: McCain was one of only 13 Senators to vote against $430,000,000 for the Department of Veteran Affairs for Medical Services for outpatient care and treatment for veterans.

March 2006: McCain voted against increasing Veterans medical services funding by $1.5 billion in FY 2007 to be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes.

March 2004: McCain once again voted for abusive tax loopholes over veterans when he voted against creating a reserve fund to allow for an increase in Veterans' medical care by $1.8 billion by eliminating abusive tax loopholes. Jeez, McCain really loves those tax loopholes for corporations, since he voted for them over our veterans' needs.

October 2003: McCain voted to table an amendment by Senator Dodd that called for an additional $322,000,000 for safety equipment for United States forces in Iraq and to reduce the amount provided for reconstruction in Iraq by $322,000,000.

April 2003: McCain urged other Senate members to table a vote (which never passed) to provide more than $1 billion for National Guard and Reserve equipment in Iraq related to a shortage of helmets, tents, bullet-proof inserts, and tactical vests.

August 2001: McCain voted against increasing the amount available for medical care for veterans by $650,000,000. To his credit, he also voted against the 2001 Bush tax cuts, which he now supports making permanent, despite the dire financial condition this country is in, and despite the fact that he indicated in 2001 that these tax cuts unfairly benefited the very wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

So there it is. John McCain is yet another republican former military veteran who likes to talk a big game when it comes to having the support of the military. Yet, time and time again, he has gone out of his way to vote against the needs of those who are serving in our military. If he can’t even see his way to actually doing what the troops want, or what the veterans need, and he doesn’t have the support of veterans, then how can he be a credible commander in chief?

My Post-Debate Letter to the Editor

After the first debate, Moveon.org sent out an email requesting that Obama supporters write letters to editors arguing why OUR guy won. Having been a newspaper reporter years ago, I am well aware of what editors are looking for in such letters. Here's what I wrote:

"To the Editor:

I think the most revealing facet of last night's debate was that Senator Obama showed he has the cool head and steady hand this country needs in its President right now. He demonstrated that he has a plan for withdrawal from Iraq and the redistribution of our military resources in places like Afghanistan. He also spoke to the need for the United States to restore its reputation in the world community--a reputation that was once stellar but has been eroded by 8 years of divisive Bush policies.

By comparison, Senator McCain revealed a mindset that is stuck in the past. His lines like, "I looked into Putin's eyes...and saw...K-G-B..." are straight out of a Cold War playbook. In fact, I think McCain would have been a very good Cold War president, but the world is different now. It's much more complex, and there are very few black-and-white issues or players on the international stage.

I went into watching the debate looking for a reason to vote for McCain [NOT true; but I sent this to a paper in a highly Republican district], and sadly instead of the "maverick" and strong leader that I'd hoped for, I saw a feeble old man who is desperately out of touch with everyday Americans.

Last night was the first of many 8 Weeks to Change calling parties hosted by MoveOn.org for the Barack/Biden ticket. Here in San Antonio, it was a huge success! We had several new volunteers make first time phone calls. They all sounded so confident on the phone. They really believe in the message of hope and change and it comes out in their voices and their message! We recruited several Minnesota volunteers to attend training later this week.

MoveOn.org recently aired a television commercial featuring baby "Alex" and his mother. Alex's mother had a message for John McCain and his plan to keep American troops in Iraq for 100 years. The message: If you were relying on Alex to help you with this plan, "You can't have him."

It's true that the Bush administration's failed policy in the Middle East has made it increasingly difficult for our nation's military to sustain its numbers and (in some cases) recruit new members. If this policy is continued by John McCain, as he has announced, it will become nearly impossible to sustain our forces at a level that will keep America safe.

But the impulse to say "not with my child" is ultimately a terribly troubling message. It implies that military service is something to be feared, that a young person's enlistment is a disappointment or a loss, and that a person's choice to join the armed forces is a political decision about a current administration's foreign policy.

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of service. The choice to defend this country is a calling to public service. It's a choice to forego wealth, status and power in order to serve something bigger than oneself. It is taken seriously and with a great measure of pride, patriotism and strength by those who are daring and selfless enough to accept it.

If Barack Obama becomes president, he can count on the loyalty and excellence of the men and women in uniform, even if they do not vote for him. John McCain can count on the same. It is one of the triumphs of our democracy that free people are willing to so serve the constitution.

So today we issue a challenge to the crafters of the MoveOn ad and those of their ilk: Open your minds about the men and women of this nation's military and about the nature of military service. Don't confuse politics with the oath to serve. Americans have the right to choose not to serve in this manner, but foregoing military service is not an accomplishment.

It is an honor and a privilege to defend this country. When we talk about honoring the troops, don't just honor their sacrifices and suffering in a time of war. Honor their patriotism, their incredible volunteerism, their community spirit and their generosity.

Military families donate millions of dollars worth of volunteer hours to their communities each year. They help out their neighbors when a spouse is deployed. They care for each other's children and support each other emotionally and spiritually in wartime and peacetime. They should be held up as an example of what this nation can be when its citizens are civically, actively engaged.

So we say to Alex's mother, you may not want your son to serve in Iraq, but please don't deny him the opportunity to honor his family and all of us by serving his country.

Media Accountability: Letter to Mark Halperin, Time

Dear Mr. Halperin,

Have you read the latest study by George Mason University's Center for Media and Public Affairs? The link is provided at the end of this for your convenience.

The study results oppose the views that you expressed on MSNBC. In fact, the study shows that ABC, NBC and CBS have been tougher on Obama than on John McCain during the general election campaign. Statements about Obama were 72% negative, compared with 57% for McCain.

Further, the study indicates that much of Senator John McCain's confusion on issues and mistaken facts have gone unreported by the media. Examples of this selective reporting includes Senator McCain calling Social Security a "disgrace", referencing Czechoslovakia as a country in existence and discussing the "Iraq-Pakistan border" another obvious error.

In my opinion, these are examples of "imbalanced" and "unfair" coverage. I believe continuing to screen out factual reporting about Senator McCain's confusion and errors is a true disservice to the general election.

I respectfully ask you to consider reading the study. With facts in hand, it should illuminate to you that inaccurately reporting about a false pro-Obama media slant feeds this right-wing belief and both your readers and the general election deserve better.

Lying isn't Perjury

I'm not sure where this myth came from that criminals cannot profit from their criminal activity.

First, there are are the speculative profitting by criminals. The two most prominent examples are Bush the Lesser and his VP. If Bush the Lesser has even the pre-Oz brains of the Scarecrow, two days before his term is up, he will grant Cheney a full pardon for all crimes. Then he will resign and let Cheney take office as President for one day and grant Bush a full pardon for all crimes. It still won't stop them from being prosecuted for international war crimes. As long as they don't kill anyone while quail hunting, golfing, or fishing, they should be safe from prosecution.

As to McClellan, he wasn't under oath when standing in the White House Press Room. Lying isn't perjury. As pointed out by a recent President, it's okay to lie if Hillary asks him if her pantsuit makes her hips look too big.

Even if his activity was criminal and the statute of limitations has run, can he profit from his book? Sure. Kurt Blome was one of more than a thousand Nazi war criminals secretly granted immunity and brought to the United States to be hired in biological and chemical warfare programs by private firms. What was the compelling reason for granting this war criminal lucrative contracts as part of Project Paperclip? He had developed and tested German nerve gases on men, women, and children at Auschwitz. Japanese war criminal General Shiro Ishii killed tens of thousands in biological and chemical experiments. He was particularly noted for freezing prisoners and then dissecting them while they were still alive. Why did the United States grant him immunity and allow him to be hired to work in Maryland? The government had plans for Antarctica and wanted his "expertise" from the freezing experiments. He also profited by working on biological weapons systems. This was a villan who is rotting in Hell along side Mengele, yet our government rewarded him and he profited. Let's not forget all those German rocket scientists hired by NASA. These were the same weapons designers that were sending rockets to kill innocents in England and would have expanded to the United States if they hadn't lost the war. They were paid very handsomely and granted US citizenship. Even lesser criminals of the garden variety felons can profit from their criminal activity. Many burglars have been hired by security firms. Computer hackers have been hired by computer security firms. Counterfeiters have been hired by manufacturers of bank paper. The prohibition against profit from a book or movie, depends on the jurisdiction and the crime.

I have received numerous emails today and a comment to my blog about MoveOn.org and their effort to pressure Scott McClellan to give away his earnings. Four writers have indicated that they are removing their names from the rolls of MoveOn.org. I'm not sure I concur with their actions. My membership in a church or organization has always been a matter of balancing the positives and the negatives. I haven't agreed 100% with all the actions or goals of any church or organization to which I have been a member. Numerous times, I have supported change from within. On one occasion. I did resigned an office and disassociated myself from membership. Hopefully, MoveOn.org will re-evaluate their position on Mr. McClellan. I hate saying wordls like "ought" and "should". However, MoveOn.org should and ought to be encouraging more people to shine the light of revealation into the dark recesses of Cheney's and Bush the Lesser's minds and machinations.

One of the responses added points that I had not mentioned that are worthy of my passing on to others. The reply stated that the Bible says a workman is worthy of his wages. "I would not presume to be qualified to tell him to give away his earnings for three years of writing the lengthy expose on the Bush administration. ... I think a whistleblower needs money to live on, as he probably has blown all future employment in his field, whether an engineer from NASA, or press secretary to the "men who rule the world",Bush&Cheney. Remember, some whistleblowers have literally lost everything for revealing the Truth,i.e., their job, savings, family, and even health. Intimidation from MOVEON to give away his book earnings "for penance" could discourage future whistle blowers faced with no prospect of career."

MoveOn.org's Brain Aneurysm!

For months I have emailed and blogged about inane and stupid positions espoused by Hellery and her minion Terry McAullife. Thanks to the latest blunder by MoveOn.org, the feeble-minded idiocy of Hellery and her camp has been surpassed.

MoveOn.org wants Scott McClellan to donate his total proceeds from his whistleblowing book to vets. Here is a man who, because of his moral principles, has alienated himself from all his life long friends. Scott McClellan, prior to his book and appearance on Keith Olbermann, was NOT on my list people to applaud. That has changed. He isn't in the class as our heros in uniform, but he deserves to be applauded for coming forward. I know there has been criticism for his not publishing earlier, however, I accept his statement on television that the past two years have been spent refining and re-drafting the book. My most recent book is in my nineteenth re-write, so I sympathize with Mr. McClellan. A book from conception to actual publication can easily consume several years.

MoveOn.org's position is penal. If they prevail, it will discourage present and former members of "Bush the Lesser's" administration from coming forward.

Shame on you MoveOn.org. Kudos to Scott McClellan.

It seems that Barack Obama isn't the only victim of having private meetings recorded. The Huffington Post today has the audio of Sen. Clinton complaining about how all those new activist voters (read: that should have been HERS) flooding into the caucuses have been dominating them. So, she's aparently against increased voter participation unless it benefits her. Some Democrat. Apparently she counted on Moveon.org, which was originally founded to protect Bill Clinton from impeachment, supporting her and is pissed that the group and its over three million members/worker bees threw their support to Barack Obama.

1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has "evolved," yet he has continued to oppose key civil rights laws.1

2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says McCain "will make Cheney look like Gandhi."2

3. His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain voted against a bill to ban Waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban.3

4. McCain opposes a woman's right to choose. He said, "I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned."4

5. The Children's Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children's health care bill last year, then defended Bush's veto of the bill.5

6. He is one of the richest people in a Senate filled with millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a "second job" and skip their vacations.6

7. Many of McCain's fellow Republican senators say he is too reckless to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."7

8. McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than McCain has any of the other presidential candidates.8

9. McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in recent years. The pastor McCain calls his "spiritual guide," Rod Parsley, believes America's founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a "false religion." McCain sought the political support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church "the Antichrist" and a "false cult."9

10. He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a zero—yes, zero—from the League of Conservation Voters last year.10

Today I participated in a calling party at Jean and John's house in North Hills (LA). They are directors of the Waldorf Institute at Northridge and do volunteer work with MoveOn.org. My sister Mary Ann is involved with the Waldorf program and talked me into coming along against my better, shy, judgement. We called Texans to get out the vote for the Texas Two Step---especially the evening caucus that a lot of folk don't know about.

We made about 250 calls! It took a while for me to get warmed up on the phone but now that I've broken the seal, I'm 'fired up' to make more calls. If I can do it, anyone can. You should give it a try!

Ohioans have a lot to be proud about their Great State! Most other Americans do not know that while North Carolina was the testing place for full flight of the first aeroplane, it was in Ohio that the Wright Brothers built the first aeroplane ever. Ohioans are a people who value wisdom, creativity and most importantly integrity and honest government.

Senator Barack Obama seeks to change America by, among many other things, changing the way things are done in Washington, DC. No more of the same old unethical and corrupt 'business as usual' practices. In his serious efforts to change things in Washington Senator Obama, during the 109th Congress, worked to have a Bill he co-sponsored with Senator Tom Coburn (D-OK), such as the "Coburn-Obama Transparency Act". This act provides the legal and fiscla means for the maintenance of a web site USAspending.gov, managed by the Office of Management and Budget (and based off of the more extensive fedspending.org, managed by OMB rival and partner OMB Watch) that lists all organizations receiving Federal funds from 2007 onward and provides breakdowns by the agency allocating the funds, the dollar amount given, and the purpose of the grant or contract. In the first month of the newly Democratic-controlled 110th Congress, Obama worked with Russ Feingold (D–WI) to eliminate gifts of travel on corporate jets by lobbyists to members of Congress and require disclosure of bundled campaign contributions under the "Honest Leadership and Open Government Act", which was signed into law in September 2007. He joined Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in sponsoring S. 453, a bill to criminalize deceptive practices in federal elections, including fraudulent flyers and automated phone calls, as witnessed in the 2006 midterm elections.

Those are just a few of the many things Senator Barack Obama has done to show that he is much more than a great speaker, political campaign organizer and incredibly successfuk uniter. Senator Barack Obama is a man who delivers on his promises and brings with him real change at a time when our country needs both real change and greater unity.

Our world today is a very different world when compared to the one in which President Bill Clinton began his first term in office. In 1992 America had not yet experienced the kind of massive socio-economic disruptions and harm caused in great measure by the 9-11 terror attacks of 2001. In 1992 our country was not as divided along political lines as it became under the years of George W. Bush's illegitimate Presidency. After all, George Herbert Walker Bush was slightly wiser than his son, and knew better than to openly mix religious preferences with his politics, the Unconstitutional way this Bush has. In 1992 we did not have a major war fiasco like we do today in Iraq, where most Iraqis say that it is OK to kill our precious young men and women, our brave and honorable troops.

Senator Hillary Clinton acts like we Americans are so naive to believe that she can repeat the economic successes of her husbad's Presidency in a world so different from the pre-9-11 yeas!

There are many other differences between then and now, but these three; a divided country, a country that has had a major attack on its economic stability and civil liberties, and a country that is no longer respected and loved like it used to be; make it a country that needs a very different kind of President than Senator Clinton or Senator McCain would be!

Our country needs someone who can really unite us in a way no President has been able to in such a long time, our country needs a President who is best able at rallying Americans, to inspire and motivate, most importantly, our younger generations, who can be seen as proof that America is truly the diverse and yet united country it claims to be, a President who, though a Church-going Christian, can reach out to all other faiths and cultures in a way that neither Senator Clinton nor Senator McCain can ever do!

Only Senator Barack Obama has what it takes to meet the daunting challenges of our times and restore America's Constitution and insure that America's Law Enforcement is once more serving the very interests of The American People, their freedoms, liberties and democratic institutions, as required by The Constitution. Only Senator Barack Obama has the humility and wisdom to know that no one person in today's ever-complicated world can govern an entire nation as great, powerful and diverse as America, without the wisdom, which Obama has, to know which other people to seek advice, counsel and feedback from! Senator Barack Obama knows the value of asking for advice from great American patriots like Senators Joe Biden, Tom Daschle and Ted Kennedy! Only a man who knows that his experience alone will not carry the day and open the way to achieving the many things that our next President must! Only Senator Barack Obama has the kind of experience in uniting, motivating and inspiring people the way our country most urgently needs! Only Senator Barack Obama will have the public American unity and the image of a truly diverse America that will allow him to go and talk to the leaders of the world, both our friendly allies and our current enemies, and convince everyone that America is restored, knows the limits of its great power and influence and is open for business again!

Senator Hillary Clinton has failed over and over again to bring together the kind of broad support, broad and diverse coalition of Americans that America needs, not only to stop McCain from taking The White House and delivering more of the same old crap, but to bring a bright new day to America, to politics in Washington, to our lives and places of work, to the World!

No. We cannot afford to miss this unique opportunity to have a President in The White House who is most able to deliver what Senator Barack Obama can! Senator Barack Obama is going to be the President who can undo the damage done by Bush, restore our country, its Constitution and challenge our adversaries to work with us and not against us!

Also, Senator Barack Obama will be a powerful voice and presence in an America that suffered greatly from the kind of divisive politics that turned a seasonal Hurricane into what Katrina actually became, our own National Nightmare and Shame! What a beautiful irony it would be if America can have its first African American President in Mr. Barack Obama, whose very reality will inspire and motivate so many young Black men and women to seek opportunities to serve the public good and run for office! What a wonderful thing it will be to have an America that lives up to its promise as a Democracy of The People, By The People and For The People! What a grand new beginning, a bright new day, will it be when Senator Barack Obama stands at the steps of Our Nation's Capitol House and having sworn to defend and uphold Our Constitution becomes the first Black President in United States History!

But if we fail to do our civic duty and truly read up on the actual platform and list of ideas that Presidential Candidate Barack Obama has on his campaign web-site, if we fail to make a truly informed decision, and if we fail to heed the advice of some of the wisest and greatest Democratic politicians; then we might fail to elect the kind of person most able to unite our diverse nation, to restore Our Great Constitution, and to unite our allies around the world as no other candidate can! And if that were to happen, then what would become of all those young Black men and women who would have been inspired, motivated and empowered?? What will become of all those young Americans, educated college students and those still yearning to be educated, who could have been inspired, motivated and empowered to build a great new America! And what will become of all the Independents and Swing Voters who might have become so encouraged and optimistic about Our Democratic Party and its ability to be unifying and yet diverse??? And, last but not least, what will become of YOU? Will you be able to live with the knowledge that you helped STOP HOPE and CHANGE from HAPPENING IN AMERICA?!?

The Endorsements Just Keep Coming…

On the heels of last nights debate between Obama and Clinton, Edwards leaving the race and an endorsement from Sen. Ted Kennedy and according to Gallup, Obama has reduced Clinton's lead nationally to just 4%, several organizations and unions endorsements Obama today.

This morning MoveOn.org endorsed Senator Barack Obama. The grass roots political action committee has 3.2 million members (including 1.7 million members who live in Super Tuesday primary states. MoveOn conducted a survey of its members after Edwards dropped out of the race – of those who responded 70% voted for Obama.

The Transportation Workers Union today also endorsed Obama. The union which endorsed Edwards last September, represents about 140,000 active members of transit workers in NYC, flight attendants for Southwest Airlines, ground crews for American Airlines and other transportation workers around the US.

The Service Employees International Union this morning endorsed Barack Obama . The SEIU includes city, county and state workers, as well as in-home support and health care workers and represents around 650,000 members.

Pandering

As I mentioned in this post, I was pleased when Barack Obama spoke against the following advertisement from MoveOn.org:

Now, I am against the Iraq War, as I have been since it started. I even participated in an anti-war rally in Appleton, WI a few weeks before we invaded on March 17, 2003. And for the most part, I feel that Petraeus' testimony was overly optimistic.

However, he is a general who is taking orders from the Bush administration, where the policy is actually set and is thus only doing his job, which is to fulfill his mission to the best of his ability and report on its progress. The real onus should be on the Bush administration for hiding behind a general as a way to push through policy.

However, what annoys me about the ad is not so much that they are directing their energy at the wrong target but that they have reduced their discourse to petty name-calling, and not only is it petty, but it also harkens back to the beginning of the war when many war proponents questioned the patriotism of war opponents.

By accusing Petraeus of betrayal for carrying out his mission and reporting on it optimistically, MoveOn.org has lost the high ground. This of course, did not go unnoticed by Senate Republicans who rallied around a resolution put forth by Senator Jon Conryn (R-TX), which condemned the ad and passed it with a 72-25 vote.

This vote was an obvious pander to the pro-war constituency, which makes up a majority of the Republican base but it was more than that: it was a political trap for the Democratic presidential candidates in the Senate. Senators Chris Dodd and Hillary Clinton took the option to use the vote to pander to the ardent anti-war crowd.

However, the other two presidential candidates in the Senate, Joe Biden and the candidate I support, Barack Obama took the, in my opinion, more intelligent, principled path of abstaining from the vote. Both have spoken against the ad before, with Biden calling it "dead, flat wrong" and Obama calling it "counterproductive".

But the ad was not the only thing silly in this episode. So was the vote which was nothing more than a political gimmick, something that Obama recognized when he said in a written statement:

The focus of the United States Senate should be on ending this war, not
on criticizing newspaper advertisements. This amendment was a stunt designed only to score cheap political points while what we should be doing is focusing on the deadly serious challenge we face in Iraq. It's precisely this kind of political game-playing that makes most Americans cynical about Washington's ability to solve America's problems. By not casting a vote, I registered my protest against this empty politics. I registered my views on the ad itself the day it appeared.
All of us respect the service of General Petraeus and all of our brave men and women in uniform. The way to honor that service is to give them a mission that is responsible, not to vote on amendments like the Cornyn amendment while we continue to pursue the wrong policy in Iraq.

I wasn't sure he'd do it, but Senator Obama hit the nail on the head.

This past week was very important for Iraq policy proposals for the United States Senate. I will focus on four amendments brought forth by Senators John Cornyn (R-TX), Russ Feingold (D-WI), Carl Levin (D-MI), and Jim Webb (D-VA). I will also include how Democratic Presidential candidates (Senators Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Chris Dodd) voted. Overall, the proposals for change in Iraq were defeated.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Thursday told a cheering Atlanta crowd that he walked away from a U.S. Senate vote to condemn the MoveOn.org newspaper ad that attacked Gen. David Petraeus, declaring the debate was an unnecessary waste of time.

The newspaper ad, published in the New York Times, referred to Petraeus as "General Betray Us." The Senate on Thursday approved the Republican-sponsored resolution, 72 to 25.

"I happen to believe that General Petraeus has served this country honorably. And I think it probably was a distraction to try to attack him as opposed to [President] George Bush's policies," Obama said.

But the Illinois senator said he couldn't tolerate "the notion that at a time when we know young men and women are dying, and veterans are not being served right here at home.... We're wasting time debating about a newspaper ad."

"I did not vote on that bill. This is the kind of game plan that the American people are tired of," Obama said.

The candidate made his comments at a $25-a-head event at the Georgia World Congress Center that organizers said drew 2,200 supporters. A $1,000-per-person, private event followed.

I was obviously already impressed with Barack Obama, but it's even more impressive to read his smart, conservative take on investing. I was also happy to see that he immediately dumped the stocks that his broker bought without his knowledge. And unlike the other candidates, he invested in absolutely nothing that conflicted with his Presidential agenda. That's integrity.

I was a fan of Bill Clinton for the most part, and as a woman, I respect Hillary's intelligence, political savvy and, to an extent, even her ruthlessness. To be honest, I believe she was the brains behind Bill's successful campaigns. As a politician, she knows how to win.

But then, so does Karl Rove. Did that help our country?

As a president, her political savvy and her ruthlessness will do nothing that hasn't already been done by Bush, which is to further tear the fabric of this country into two. I can't think of one good "change" that she initiated, throughout her years of experience that she so readily touts. Bill Clinton, she is not.

And this would be a depressing thing as a centrist Democrat for me to face, if I had to vote the lesser of two evils in yet another election. But I don't.

In Barack Obama's extensive experience, he has initiated much needed change many times, and most of the time this was done hand-in-hand with like-minded Democrats AND Republicans. You can see for yourself here.

I researched Hillary's site as well, and while she touts numerous Senate bills that she "supported", "helped to pass", and "sponsored"…I notice that most, if not all, were simply votes with rank-and-file politicians' stances that were popular at the time. See for yourself here.

My point is this: it seems to me that Hillary's stances have always been spelled out TO her by politicians, lobbyists, and left/right extremists, whereas Barack has the leadership to take stances that aren't always the most popular with D.C. politicians, lobbyists, or extremists on either side. Furthermore, he's shown the capacity to initiate these changes, based on common sense and concern for the ordinary American.

That's not just change…it's change for the better.

How I Stopped Being Quiet.

I grew up trusting Presidents. I actually liked Reagan and even Bush Sr., if you can believe that. I loved Bill Clinton, and the prosperity he brought in the 90's. So I voted for Gore in 2000, but still accepted the election results with little complaint. I am a centrist, so I always loathed political debate, feeling it accomplished nothing for me. I would debate quietly, with my vote.

After 9/11, I trusted George Bush to do the right thing, accepted our war on Terror, waved our flag and supported our troops (as I still do). In 2003, I listened with growing unease as WMD's were supposedly found in Iraq. I listened to both sides -- or so I thought -- but while I was beginning to see through Bush, Colin Powell still had my unwavering trust. I wanted to believe that America would never, ever, preemptively strike a country without clear and present danger. After all, the entire world had come together to support us after 9/11. We wouldn't let them down, right?

Boy, was I duped. The house of cards started falling down -- first Colin Powell resigned, then the Valerie Plame scandal broke. Then Bush was joking about "where are those WMD's?" at the While House Press Reception. My stomach churned. The bad omens continued. Yet, still I was not a political activist. I was quiet.

It was clear that Bush should not be a two-term President. I mean, he had to wage a Supreme Court fight just to win the last time. Surely it will be easy to vote him out in 2004, I thought. I didn't participate in the primaries, but just waited for the candidate to emerge, because I believed the DNC would choose the best one. OK, it's John Kerry -- he's a war hero, good deal. Anything's better than Bush, that was the Democrat's mantra.

And as I watched with awe as newcomer Barack Obama blew everyone away at the DNC (watch an excerpt here), I smiled with confidence, feeling inspiration in the Democratic Party. Maybe there was hope in the future! Without debate or fanfare, I quietly voted Democrat in central Illinois -- John Kerry for President, Barack Obama for Senator.

What I didn't realize was this: That incredible inspiration and hope I felt came from Barack Obama himself, not the Democratic Party at all. Once he left the stage, the Democrats' house of cards fell. Kerry/Edwards lost. Bush/Cheney not only won, but then proceeded to smear the victory into our faces, touting their "mandate" and running amok as things got worse in every way. The DNC started infighting. My heart sank, and I started to feel jaded about my own country.

Then I joined MoveOn.org. I'm not sure why; perhaps at first it was just to commiserate with other Democrats. But as time went on and MoveOn grew, I started to see sparks of something -- a real grassroots movement. Before, I had always thought of "grassroots" as the kiss of death for politics, just an idealistic minority who split the vote a la Gore vs. Nader. But this movement wasn't just about a presidential campaign.

MoveOn was gaining traction in legislation, first through their own Senators and Representatives, and then as a force to be reckoned with on both sides of Congress. We were starting to stand up to the big lobbyists and get our voices heard. I realized I myself could be part of the solution. Still, loathe to offend anyone, I kept my political emails to folks who I knew would agree. Quietly, I signed petitions and donated to the cause.

In 2006, I started to emerge from my political shell. Being in the MoveOn network empowererd me, because I didn't feel so alone anymore in my beliefs -- there were plenty of centrist Democrats like me who craved change. And with MoveOn's technological advances, I was able to use my own cell phone at home (now in California) to call people on Election Day in November. I made sure to keep it fairly neutral, just making sure folks knew it was Election Day and where their polling places were, while stating that I myself would be voting Democrat. I was so nervous! I think I made about 12 calls that day, and reached only 6 or 7 actual voters.

It was a small step for me, but a giant leap for my movement. Apparently thousands of MoveOn folks, ordinary people with similar political backgrounds as myself, had done just what I did, adding up to hundreds of thousands of phone calls. And it worked! The tremendous amount of pride and accomplishment I felt that day was addictive. I am thankful for MoveOn for breaking me out of my shell.

So why am I writing this on a BarackObama.com blog, instead of waiting for MoveOn to endorse a candidate? Because since that day watching the DNC, I have been more and more inspired by the Obamas -- who they are, what they've done, and what they believe. I've realized that I don't have to let anyone else tell me who's best to run this country -- I have to figure it out for myself through extensive research, and then make it happen myself through action. I've come full circle in my political evolvement, going back to my true centrist Democrat roots.

That being said, I truly believe that Barack Obama can bring us all back together, to trust our President once more. And I'm done being quiet about it.

P.S. Just wanted to add that I've grown apart from MoveOn.org recently. Not so much because of the notorious "Betray Us" ad, but in general they seem to be skewing towards the extreme left and moving away from my own centrist beliefs. It seems like the leadership has changed at the organization, which makes me very sad. I hope they go back to their populist roots.

This meeting will probably be the most important in helping MoveOn.org in deciding on a presidential endorsement given the organization's focus on ending the Iraq War.
