Focused Attention: House Party to Discuss Economic Stimulus

Neighbors in Riverside gathered on Sunday, February 8th, 2009 for a House Party to discuss the proposed economic stimulus package with sharp attention to a call to action, concern for our local community, and energy for getting to work to affect meaningful change.

Ten concerned citizens met on February 8 in Henderson, NV, to discuss the Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Plan, better known to many as the stimulus plan. They are incensed that Republicans in the Senate have, yet again, hijacked democracy and derailed not only our best chance at getting this country back on the fast track to recovery but quite possibly our only chance of survival in today’s rapidly (rabidly) declining economic conditions, apparently oblivious to what led to their demise in the recent election.

Poll results obviously have not changed our landscape, but the same rumble that rocked this country to its new leader is fueling the small groups gathering in dining rooms and living rooms in every state, to talk about how to light flickering fires and fan bigger ones. Ten people around a table watching a governor answer questions may not seem like much, but those ten people brainstormed ideas to push this stimulus through. The idea that ultimately saves our nation could come from a similar meeting.

The more important outcome is what happens with the ten people at this meeting: Each has committed to bringing more friends to the next meeting and growing a larger coalition of like-minded people devoted to healing our nation’s ills. They will strive to rebuild a sense of community that works together to link elbows to take on the forces of resistance that persist in blocking any and all proactive measures to correct the destructive legacy of the previous administration.

Another goal is to present to the Obama Administration, through the Organizing for America arm, a set of suggestions put together by the group that they believe will be instrumental in various aspects of what is happening at a particular juncture. Right now, of course, the primary focus is on getting the stimulus passed, helping more Americans understand its importance, and ensuring its transparency when it does pass.

The Las Vegas area has been hit particularly hard by foreclosures, unemployment, and – contrary to what Senator Ensign would have the country believe – dramatic state budget shortfalls ($2 billion) that will decimate our education system, state services like firefighting and peacekeeping, social services, unemployment, etc., at a time when the need for these services is at a pinnacle. Everyone in the state has a personal stake in this stimulus. If someone is not already personally affected by the economy, they likely will be in the very near term. Every homeowner has been affected by loss of equity, whether they plan to sell or not. Every renter is at risk of eviction without notice, because laws do not protect tenants if landlords are foreclosed. There is no notification process or requirement. Every worker is at risk of job loss, with the remote exception of the military (and even they are not exempt as the 1992 reduction in forces proved to the author of this piece). State employees are facing a forced salary reduction if our governor’s plan is passed.

There were thousands of meetings around this great country of ours similar to this one. The Henderson group is dynamic and diverse. They are serious and focused. Most of them have been politically astute for many years; however, they would like for others to become more involved in their communities and more politically active to effect the type of change that is needed in today’s climate. Just as it took a storm to elect this president, it will take a tsunami to bring about the type of change he promised and this country so desperately needs. The storm has subsided. The tsunami is building strength: it started with ten (times thousands); those ten will bring twenty more. Then those twenty will gather their forty. You don't have to know us to join our group. Victory Now Change House Party 12/13/08

On Saturday, December 13, 2008 I hosted a Victory Now Change house party at my home. While I only had 5 guest, we had a very good discussion on a broad range of issue that we felt will have the greatest impact on our community and our country.

We discussed reaching out to our Republican counterparts during future house meetings since the issues being discussed affect all Americans and not just Democrats. We also believe it may be wise to join forces with the members of house party groups in our surrounding area to add emphasis of like type issues.

Our top 4 issues include:

The Economy
1. We would like to see the appointment of a bipartisan panel that would be responsible for the oversight of companies who ask for and receive federal bailout dollars. This group would ensure that the money and the direction of the companies is in the best interest of the American people and not the company executives and shareholders.
2. We would like to see government guidance that would ask banks to renegotiate individual mortgages that are in default.

i. We believe that the federal and state government to should limit new home construction if there is more than a certain percentage of available houses in the area. Continued building is causing the market to be oversaturated and is driving down the value of existing homes. New homes could still be built if the construction would replace an existing home.

ii. We believe that banks should be encouraged to loans in default to extend the loan term and set a fixed interest rate. An entry should be made on the borrower’s credit reporting to reflect this renegotiation of terms.

iii. We would also like to ask that these borrowers who are in default be required to have their finances reviewed by a non-profit credit counseling agency prior to being considered for restructuring to see if the default is as a result of bad lending or poor personal financial management.

1. We would like to see increased oversight of the stock market. Currently a limited number of Americans and an increasing number of foreign governments are holding large volumes of stock in key US assets. As we have seen in recent weeks this gives these groups the ability to adversely affect our economy.
2. We believe that America has to increase the amount of manufacturing within the United States and find ways to encourage companies to stop outsourcing work. US Manufacturing is now dropped to 1942 levels which places our national security at risk.

Healthcare
1. We definitely support the concept of a basic universal healthcare for all tax paying Americans.

i. Americans who can afford it should be provided additional options to pay for an upgrade to their coverage which would include addition service.

ii. We think there should be a not for profit organization designated to oversee this universal healthcare program. As long as for profit insurance companies are involved medical care in America will continue to deteriorate.

iii. We would like to see these benefits limited to citizens who are paying their far share (taxes) to support the needs of our country. We cannot continue to provide people (non-resident and non-tax paying Americans) a free ride.

iv. We would like to see an overhaul of the Medicare/Medicaid that would streamline the program and provide patients with the proper treatment for their doctor’s diagnosis.

v. We would like to see oversight to speed the implementation of online medical record that would speed patient treatment and reduce cost.

Defense
1. We do not believe there is a win or lose scenario in Iraq and believe that we should turn the responsibility for security over to the Iraqi government as soon as possible.
2. We do believe that there is still a threat to U.S. security from Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda and the Taliban hiding in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The U.S. should redirect resources from Iraq to Afghanistan to track down and destroy these threats.
3. The federal government should immediately overhaul the VA system to ensure that our troops who have given so much to defend our way of life are properly provided for when they return home.

i. Period of Transition from deployed troops from Combat to Civilian

ii. Medical care

iii. Job Training and Placement

iv. Housing Assistance

1. We need to renew our military capability

i. Need to inventory and replace inadequate, worn and outdated equipment

1. Provide the manufacture of MRAPs assistance to speed production and deployment of MRAPs to combat zones to replace the outdated and inadequate HUMVEEs.

a. Perhaps as a condition of an auto industry bailout the big 3 auto makers could be enlisted to improve production

ii. Need to immediately return all National Guard troops to the U.S. These troops are designed to protect and defend our homeland.

1. Many of our troops currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan have been over-utilized and need to be replaced.

2. Need to consider at least a limited draft that would require young men to serve a period of two years in what could be called a non-deployable ready reserve. At least a percentage of these draftees would elect to re-enlist and would then be deployable. The others would incur a 5 year inactive reserve commitment.

a. In return we should offer them a 4-year college education at one of their state’s universities.

Energy & the Environment
1. We support the immediate investment of tax dollars to develop alternative fuels and more fuel efficient vehicles.
2. We believe America should immediately explore and encourage the development of ways to reduce fuel consumption. Here are some examples of ways to immediately reduce fuel usage are:

i. Home or neighborhood officing

1. Using broadband to perform administrative duties from home or community office.

2. Create jobs converting uninhabited buildings that are available in nearly all communities to be used as individual office space with IT support and an office environment.

a. Worker or employer would basically rent an office space within the community.

3. Reduce daily commute times from 2 or more hours to just a few minutes.

a. Reduce carbon emissions

b. Reduce Fuel Consumption

c. Reduce Highway and public transportation congestion.

d. Reduce employee stress

e. Increase involvement in the family and community

ii. Four day work weeks

iii. Limiting businesses and retail to 6-day weeks

1. Need the Transportation Secretary to take a look at our current trucking industry to see if there is a more efficient way to move goods within the U.S. that would reduce fuel consumption of over-the-road trucks.

i. Mandatory conversion of truck stops with in window power/heat/air and communications.

ii. Change from Interstate trucking to Regional trucking using increased rail transportation of goods.

iii. Development of more efficient trucks

1. Investment in resurrecting train technology in America .

As a group we agreed that during this holiday season that it would be difficult to develop and conduct a public service project other than those we are already involved in. We did discuss contacting our respective cities to see what committees or boards have openings and submitting an application to serve on one or more of these committees.

Post-election organizing.

Our group host Gene and his wife Linda opened their home on a cool and cloudy Sunday (14-Dec-2008). We introduced ourselves, watched a short video, and then went around the room sharing with each other this issues that are important to us.

We decided that we wanted to take action immediately by delivering 10 pounds of food each to our local Food Bank in one week (December 21, 2008). We wanted to do something to support the Food Bank before the week of Christmas.

Since leaving the House Party we have kept in touch through email and two more people have joined the Group.

The great thing was the amount of enthusiasm and energy people want to contribute to help Barack Obama achieve success of his visions. While I canvassed for Barack a number of times during the past year, yesterday's house party was the first time i got to sit down with a group of my fellow canvassers/volunteers to discuss the issues that concern our precincts (Hollin Hall and Sherwood). It was enlightening to hear such divergant opinions from food safety to retirement security. Thanks Jeanie for hosting such a great event.

For the People! By the People! We had a great event here on Sunday at my house. With eight people in attendance we were comfortable in the living room and not crowded. My daughter Alexa and her friend Taylor made chocolate chip and snickerdoodle cookies for us and we sat around the Christmas tree and discussed our issues and ways to help our communities. We talked about a lot of things here at the event with all of our issues seeming to be wrapped up mostly around the economy and the idea that if we fix the economy then we can get the rest of the problems fixed. Healthcare, foreign policy, the environment and ethics in politics seemed to be major themes as well. We discussed doing a few different community service events such as a food drive or an inauguration ball with profits to go to the people in our community who need the help the most.

What issues are most important to your group?:
Environment, particularly important in the upper delaware watershed which provides drinking water to 25 million people, and there are many threats including a gas drilling gold rush, pipeline and powerline expansions, loss of farm land and development.

Other issues include sustainable local agriculture, permaculture, energy production, education, healthcare, Supreme Court appointments, Cabinet level appointments (members of group are against Joel Klein for DOE), ineffectivenes and lack of participation in local democratic party, federal deficit.

Who are your local officials and representatives? Does anyone in your group have connections to them?:
The group encompasses people from two states and 4 counties (Delaware and Sullivan in NY and Pike and Wayne in PA). We have contacts with local reps.

How will you build relationships with your representatives and let them know which issues are important to you?:
We discussed infiltrating the local democratic committees.

What are your local media outlets? Do you have any relationships with the local media?:
We will contact the local newspapers including the River Reporter, Hancock Herald, Wayne Independent. We have relationships with them.

How do you plan to publicize your actions and amplify your voices?:
We will encourage members to invite new people to join.

What will you do even before Barack Obama is President? Describe the service event your group has committed to before inauguration:

The group discussed two actions.

One involves publicising the existence of the local group as a conduit for communications of local issues to local representatives and the Obama organization. This entails distributing flyers, posters and links at local libraries to the group's blog and whatever other mechanism the Obama organization develops to funnel up communication. We encourage you to create such a system, through multiple online and offline media, to fulfill the promise of increased transparency and local democratic participation.

The second event, potentially scheduled for 1/19 would be a celabaration of the innauguration in the courthouse square of Honesdale, the county seat of Wayne County.

So I've been watching the Democratic National Convention on C-Span every night, and I"m so happy to be a democrat. The speeches by Michelle, Hillary, and of course, VPCantidate Joe Biden. Last night was fabulous, and having Barack show up was phenomenal... I'm so glad he got the chance to see all of his delagates together, in one place, not to say that they won't be there tonight, but the intimacy of the Convention at the Pepsi Center is unlike anything. Sure, I'm not there, I don't really know that, but it's an atmosphere that can never be recreated, especially after just being nominated. and now, this night, the final night, is so exciting! I'm at a party at the Steelworkers local union hall, and we're having a "house party" they're welcoming us here... and it's so cool to be here, to be a part of this campaign... I'm signed up to do volunteer work, and I'm psyched.

More later, but this night is so amazing... I'm glad to share it with the entire country!

Having a House Party

I never thought I would be "politically active" (other than donated to Obama online), but tonight we're hosting a House Party for the Obama acceptance speech. This came about by talking to the Chase City Obama office manager who suggested it and then put my name in the online Obama network for this area. With Virginia being one of the battle ground states, we can expect more Obama offices to open and more knocks on our doors asking us to get involved in creating the country we want. We can expect more house parties.

You know, this message of Yes We Can is a deeply spiritual message that goes right to the core of our relationship with God and our self, a relationship that in our time is changing right beneath our feet. The existential question being asked is simple: are we the created or are we co-creators in this life we are all living? In other words, are we separate from God, just puppets in His show or some game of chance, or are we also the sleeping puppeteers who have unknowingly handed over the string of our life to our conditioned ego and social institutional powers? Do we have the power to create our world or are we just the created characters in some absurd play signifying nothing. Is our story given or can we write our own story? There are so many ways to frame the question but only one solution.

The fundamental message of Obama and his campaign is a spiritual one, a radical message when taken to the heart that awakens our souls and moves us to action. Yes we can take back America and our lives. Yes we can choose to be who we really are. Yes we can take affirmative action and change the stage of our play. We are the authors of our existence.

But for Obama and his message, this is not an intellectual belief, not an armchair philosophy; this is a belief with muscle. This is a faith with arms and feet and a voice. This election is a call to life and to reclaim our birth right of freedom from the frozen ideologies of the past.

So yes I'm excited about Obama, but not only for his personality, for his policies, and for his promise. I'm excited about Obama because I'm excited about our own freedom that Obama through his courage helps us get in touch with.

CD-5 Organizational Party for Barack's Birthday

I just recieve an email from Medhi Alhassani, the Regional Field Director for CD-5, about the organizational meeting to celebrate Barack's 47th birthday they held at the Campaign for Change office in Minneapolis.

There was great turnout for the meeting/party, just another sign that Minnesotans are eager for change, and ready to help make Barack Obama our next president.

Here's how Medhi described the night:

The party was a huge success. At the start of the event, people went around the room introducing themselves and saying each person would give Senator Obama for his birthday. Field Organizer Andy Holmaas said he wanted to give the Senator 47 voter registration cards for his birthday.
By the end of the party he was at 44 but claimed he still had three hours to get the remaining three…he’s currently in the field trying to fulfill his promise.
UPDATE [10:50 PM] Medhi just emailed me to say Andy called him... he hit 50 voter reg cards!
One of the highlights of the evening was that the party was accompanied by local Jazz Legend “Cornbread” Harris. The 82 year old musician wants to do everything he can to help the Senator win and everyone enjoyed the rhythm he brought to the party.

As in so many campaign events we’ve seen, the crowd was very diverse. A pastor from Fridley, some college students, to Southside Minneapolans- all coming together because they believe Senator Obama has the right judgment and message to bring about the change Americans are yearning for.

I would like to attend the DNC and can get there and have friends to stay with, but our oldest (her first election to vote!) is moving in at college and I doubt it'd be possible to get in to events anyway!
I am hosting "an Obama House Party" next week, and have invited 50 of my friends+acquaintances as well as a handful of teens, friends of our daughter, who will be voting for the first time this year! I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. Though meteorologists called for gloom, the sun peaked its head through the clouds and happily exposed itself, lifting my spirits as I called my two Republican friends to help me set up. Belle, Karen and Jen, two of whom had voted for George Bush, were on their way to my house to help me Unite Americans for Change. We set out shrimp cocktail and croissant sandwiches along with an assortment of sodas, and breathed a sigh of relief as we finished and the doorbell rang. At promptly 12:00 p.m. guests came rolling in, with big smiles and hellos, and even a few "YES WE CANS!" I put on a DVD of Barack's speeches while we ate and got to know one another. It's amazing what happens when people actually stop and take the time to say "hello" to their fellow American. Next, I told my story of why I am supporting Barack and Ryan (an Obama fellow who helped to run the event) shared his as well. We then let all who attended share why they were here. We were a group of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Catholic, white, latino, and black. Asians, sports fans, CEO's, and line workers.....Americans. Americans who all sat inspired and ready to get this country back on track. An investment banker at Merrill Lynch, who said he came because he was interested, but not a supporter, yet by the end of the meeting, he signed up to volunteer for Obama! A Republican who was worried about taxation from Dems, who stated that all her life she had voted 'Republican' yet after learning the truth on Obama's taxation policies that she would change this year. A Hillary supporter, as passionate about Universal Health Care as anyone I had ever met, who came because she believed that Obama would finally be the one to deliver it. From those who have been with the movement since Obama's Senate run in Chicago to those who just signed on with movement; through all our differences, sitting in my basement and out on the patio, there was so much more we had in common.

Obama's ideas for our country and message to Americans are attainable, doable, common sense policies that I know will help to turn this economy around. When people stop to listen and learn, not just vote a party, but voting from knowledge of proposals the choice is clear. We learned this day that your options this election are Obama's policies of new ideas to lower taxes for the working American, health care for every American, new jobs through energy independence. Or John McCain's policies that are the same Bush policies that have and will continue to destroy our economy, obliterate the middle class and increase poverty levels and therefor crime, while selling our country to China and Europe. As I said before, the choice if very clear for anyone willing to listen. Americans came to my home, every religion, race, class and age. They came to unite to make our country a better place for us and our children. Together we will.

I have decided to host a gathering of people in Beloit and area at my house, 2501 Shopiere Rd., Beloit, WI 53511, on July 26th from 2:00 pm-4:00 pm. I am anxious to meet People who like me, support Barack Obama for president and are willing to put a little time in to make his campaign successful. Last election, only 48% of eligible voters actually voted. 65% of those not voting were Democrats. So gather up your family and friends and come to my place to talk about what we can do to change the direction of our country. We are also in the position to register new voters, so bring them and we will hook them up! We will be serving cookies and iced tea, and a whole lot of love for Obama and our country, and our neighbors.

FEC Guidelines for TPM-aholic (and other) house parties

I had some questions regarding the FEC and Obama campaign rules for hosting a fundraising house party, including:

how much can I spend on drinks, etc., and do I have to report it? and
how do I collect money and what information do I need to get from donors.

My First Obama House Meeting

Wow! I went to my first Obama house meeting last night and it was amazing! The Obama Fellow that lead the discussion, Joe Kay, was amazing. There were about 20 people - maybe more -It started by having the host, Ms Lesie Lyons, give a short talk on her extensive history as a democrat, and why she was an Obama supporter. Then the Fellow gave his chat, we all introduced ourselves and gave a short reason for why we were there, and then watched the 17 min Obama video.

this week. I had a fellow homeschooling mama and her kids over. She saw my Obama sign in the front window and started asking if I was going to work for Obama in the fall. I told her about my primary work and how yes, I was absolutely going to do some in the fall and she wanted to talk about what she could do to help. Maybe I can get her to cohost a house party with me. Just finding a homeschooler who was NOT a right wing fundamentalist Huckabee type was exciting, but another Obamamama!!! Awesome!

Powhatan County Unite for Change house party!

On Saturday evening there was a small congregation of cars parked along side the road in Red Lane. As drivers rode past, they may have wondered why all of the cars were there, until, perhaps, they noticed all of the cars had Obama '08 stickers on them!

Powhatan County had its first Unite for Change gathering in order to bring Obama supporters together and to brainstorm and organize future events. One of the Obama fellows, Beth, came all the way down from Charlottesville to help out and provide information about the Obama campaign. It was a nice crowd and a diverse one at that: young, old, white, African-American, male, female, Christian, and Jewish. As Beth left, she said Powhatan was the most organized and eager of the groups she had met with. We are most definitely FIRED UP AND READY TO GO!

Unite for Change Party Decorah Iowa

I was unable to hold a Unite for Change party of my own this weekend due to prior engagements. But I decided to check out what events were coming to my area (there are usually none, I live in such a rural area) I was happy and excited to see that in the neighboring town of Decorah there was a Unite For Change party scheduled for Sunday.

Kathy was gracious and had a wonderful home acreage. The area was carved out neatly from the surrounding corn fields and seemed like everything Iowa should be.

As people began to show up it was nice to see people I had talked with on the blog as well as people I had seen through the campaign back in Jan. Even though this party was out of my county I was happy to be involved with supporters who were proud to be helping out and excited to get things started. It gave me some great ideas for my upcoming party on July 19th.

We all introduced ourselves and told our stories about how we became "hope-mongers". Sometimes I forget that I was not involved in politics before this campaign until I tell my story and hear myself speaking the words. That "LBB" Life Before Barack seems like a million years ago.

There were people there that were close to 90 and the young and up and coming. One of the younger people there brought up the idea of a "happy hour" for Barack every week at a local bar/restaurant as an opportunity for people to get together in a "less organized" and "less threatening" way. Although calling it happy hour is out of the question she thought of calling it "Barack Hour" but thought that sounded like an evangelical "hour of power" kind of thing. I am not sure what the final name will be but what a wonderful idea to get people to be comfortable and talk about Barack and for those who may not know him to get to know him.

We decided that the biggest problem for most people is that they just have not spent enough time getting to know Barack and what he stands for, especially some of the supporters of other candidates. There were woman there that struggled themselves with the choice between the first woman and Barack as well as Edwards supporters that have all come to read up on Barack and fully support him.

I know I have not spent a ton of time researching Hillary or McCain so I assume that of others and their lack of information on Barack. We are hoping that we may, by being in a public place, pull others into the conversation or at least get the information in their ears from across the room.

There is a huge 4th of July celebration in a neighboring town and some of the people are going to set up a table with information and hope to get some attention there. I think that the opportunity we have on such a patriotic holiday, the one in which we celebrate the biggest CHANGE America ever struggled through, is a great starting point for getting ourselves out their and introducing the biggest force of change this country has seen in 40 years!

I know this is not my normal "exciting" post, but I thought the ideas we had might be shared.

Unite for Change Arvada CO

Respect, Empower, Include! These sentiments were evident in the excitement and enthusiasm at the 'Unite for Change' event at our small house in Arvada, CO on Saturday night. My husband and I were excited when by mid week we had 18 people signed-up. Then 46 people showed up and our house was bursting at the seams. It was inspiring and encouraging to see so many people talking about what had brought them together and what their hopes were for the future. Many stories were shared, and one in particular stood out. A woman spoke who had been a staffer for Republicans in congress for more than 15 years and since then her current work had provided her with the opportunity to meet many world leaders. She had also met Barack Obama and she eloquently described her feelings about him; she believes him to be a leader and visionary of the highest quality. She said, "Once in a generation the world is gifted with someone of his talents." We must do everything we can to elect Barack Obama the next President of the United States.

Colorado Unites for Change

The message of this campaign has always been about bringing people together. Now, as we start working on the general election, people across the country are holding Unite for Change events to spread the message of unity and bringing about change from the bottom up.

One of these events took place in Eagle County, where Peggy, a volunteer who had been actively involved in the February caucus, invited her neighbors over for brunch to help reach out to new supporters and help grow the movement for change.

After some conversation, blueberry pancakes and bacon, Peggy sat down with a group of neighbors, people from nearby counties, and even a couple out-of-state supporters to talk about what issues are important to them and how their involvement in the campaign and their community can change America.

Peggy shared her story:

I was like so many others, where you think ‘I go and I vote for president and I’m really just trying to decide who I don’t want more than who I want.’ And until this man, Barack Obama, came along, that’s what it was for me. I was very cynical; I didn’t think there was any hope for this country. And then I thought about my three grand children and I realized they’re going to have fewer opportunities in life -- for education, for living a good life, for work opportunities; unless I care about it and I get involved.

Many of the people who came to the meeting were new to politics or had not been involved for a number of years. Others had supported different candidates during the caucus, but all of them were excited to talk about the campaign and how they wanted to engage their communities and build our grassroots movement.

Later yesterday evening, another Unite for Change event took place in Evergreen, where Katherine invited people from the surrounding area to her house, where they talked about policy and what led them to get involved in Senator Obama’s campaign.

Across the country Democrats, Republicans and Independents are coming together to discuss what changes they would like to see in their community and their country. You can host one of these events or find one near you.

I did it! It's my first experience at campaign involvement and I love it! It was scary because I didn't really know what I was doing but I'm so glad I did. Getting contacted by a full-time Obama campaigner who helped me gather participants really made the difference. Anyone on the fence about trying a house party should go for it. Just get the word out, keep it simple and contact a campaign office near you if you're struggling.

We had a great get together today at Noon, about 30 People came.We had Democrats, Obamacans, and undecideds. We watched a video about the campaign provided by Mary Anne who did the Obama fellowship training and is now working her butt off to get our guy elected. Following the video and some munchies, we had a lively discussion that ranged from people's feelings about where the U.S. has been for the last seven or so years, and where we are going.We talked about strategy, and made connections and enjoyed each others company.We had some laughs too, sometimes at George Bush's expense. The idea was to simply put people together in a room who are excited and enthusiastic. What a good group! My wife Judy and I did not know what to expect because many people were meeting for the first time. But these folks are intelligent, friendly, and energetic. It went off really well, with lots of talking and sharing of info and ideas and feelings. Really, all we had to do was create a space, and the rest just unfolded. We are in a really conservative part of Florida, so many of us were surprised at the turnout. The momentum is building, the change has begun. C'mon, join us. You know you want to.

Stepping up the pace for the General Election

Things are starting to jump in PA. Our county has 11 Organizing Fellows and a paid Staffer. This weekend there are at least 18 Unity parties planned. Voter registration is in full swing. I heard reports that the Organizing Fellows are getting 100 registrations a day. There are Hillary supporters hosting Unity parties for the campaign. In my area volunteers are registering voters at carnivals, community yard sales, in grocery store parking lots, at 4th of July events, and many other places. What is happening in other areas?

Precinct 277 Organization and House Party

Several of the Obama delegates from Precinct 277 have managed to locate and contact each other and we have begun the work of coordinating our Precinct for the Senatorial District coming up. However, we have only identified six delegates and one alternate. Since there were 20 Obama delegates and a good number of Obama alternates, we need to find more so they can be brought into the loop.

We will be having a House Party on March 27 at 7:00 to work on our planning in person at the apartment of two of our delegation members. House Party Precinct 1806

What a great experience. I'm more excited than ever. So was my four 1/2 year old Meredith who was the official greeter. She made sure one volunteer was going to vote for Obama. We even had our Obama precinct campaign organizer, Adrienne, attend and boy, was she awesome! She enthusiastically and deftly explained Texas precinct politics and Texas precinct captains volunteer opportunities on the texas precinct captains website. We even had some very knowledgeable enthusiastic ladies from Barack Stars who shared some wonderful ideas on calling and the helpful DFW Obama website. Many thanks to them. We all talked and felt we are going to be part of history. We are motivated by the idea of helping to create a just society where we care for each other and help each other. Everyone talked about the common theme of being excited Barack will return our government back to the people for a true democracy. Also, he really can win the Presidency. Each of us are believing that America will be much better after Barack can make changes. Several people had never volunteered before and it is so exciting to see people moved so much to want to act and help elect Barack. Several of us are getting back together tomorrow to make calls and maybe if we get the end of our list in sight, we might go knock on a few doors! I'm was having the most empowering time going around my neighborhood meeting Obama supporters and seeing the joy on their faces when they see a fellow Democrat Obaman! I'm learning my neighborhood is more diverse than I thought and this gives me such a feeling of connectedness and hope. Hope at work again!

Late Bloomer

Well, I've gotten into this a bit late and feel like I'm playing catch-up, but I'm doing the best I can. My husband and I are having a house party today, though (probably because I'm a little late) no one has signed up yet. I looked at my precinct list and there is absolutely NO ONE on my street on my list! So, I'm going to go door-knocking. I am looking into becoming a registrar so I can register voters as I do that.

I'm attending a house party nearby (in Texas, that could be half an hour to 45 minutes away!), just to see how they run it, so I have a better idea of what to do. If the one tonight fails, I'll have another one next week, after I door knock and before the primary on the fourth. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Closing the Deal in Bow, NH

With momentum building in the Granite State, voters are hearing from Barack’s “Closer”, Michelle, at house parties across the state.

Yesterday, one of these parties drew nearly 100 voters, many of them undecided, to Bow NH. Michelle urged the audience to vote their aspirations and imagine a country where people believe in their government again.

“We need inspiration right now. We need someone who can excite people enough to get involved in their government,” she said.

She added that Barack has demonstrated the ability to do just that, judging from the thousands of people across the country that he has inspired to enter the political process.

The Obama Confession

I had the pleasure of attending a house party given by one of my Sorors over the weekend as part of this weekend of house parties for Obama in GA. The function was well hosted and the host was well prepared to share her enthusiasm for Sen. Obama as a candidate. There were some undecideds at the event, however I believe those undecideds can become supporters. I didn't support Sen. Obama in the beginning. Here's my confession.

During the start of this very long campaign season I was leaning toward other candidates. Admittedly, that leaning was without knowledge of anyone's positions on any issue, let alone issues that were important to me. My thinking was that Sen. Obama could not win. As an African-American, I believed that in this country, with its history of racism and its inability to truly resolve issues of race, an African-American man could not possibly stand a chance of becoming President in this America. I'd been there before, having "kept hope alive" as a staunch supporter of Jesse Jackson in 1988. As an idealistic college student I believed that Rev Jackson came closest to representing the issues that were most important to me and told everyone who would hear why they should support him.

Circling back to 2007, being a middle aged cynic my voting pattern had become "the lesser of two evils," i.e. the candidate that seemed least corrupt and had some semblance of a positive record on issues of importance to me would get my vote. There is no real expectation of change so rolling with the punches was the only alternative (in my mind). Then I heard the business owner of my favorite Caribean restaurant say to me "why should Obama wait? If not now when?" That is when the light bulb came on for me. I began to listen to Sen Obama and the other candidates and began to check where they stood on the issues and finally realized and understood that where Obama stands, I stand. By the fall my mind was made up, now is the time for Obama.

This "confession" was made to share with other cynics who have felt disenfranchised, disgusted, disappointed and even disinterested in the policies of the current administration and those before it. My hope, and yes now I do have some, is that Americans can set aside all of their fears and doubts about the political process and be a part of process that can finally change America for the better.

Las Vegas, Nevada – The Barack Obama campaign announced today that “Desperate Housewives” actress Kathryn Joosten will phone bank with local volunteers and supporters tomorrow, Saturday, December 29th in the Southwest Las Vegas office. Joosten, who previously starred as Mrs. Landingham in “The West Wing,” will call Las Vegas residents to encourage them to support Senator Obama and join his growing grassroots movement for change in Nevada and across the country. Later in the day, Joosten will attend one of the Women for Barack Obama house parties being held across the state. Senator Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, will call into the gatherings.

House Parties with Samantha Power

In addition to speaking at a forum on Darfur and Africa yesterday, Samantha Power (Harvard professor, award-winning author, and foreign policy advisor to Barack Obama) spent quality time with undecided caucus-goers and Obama supporters at two house parties in Nevada.

At each house party Ms. Power gave a short introduction about herself and Barack’s vision for a post-Bush administration world. She then welcomed the audience to ask her whatever was on their minds and promised to relay Nevadans’ concerns to Barack himself. She was asked, “When should we stop negotiating with dictators?” Here’s her answer:

"There’s plenty bad to say about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad but to say it from here, from Washington, from America and throw these verbal grenades – the idea that that’s tough but going in the room is somehow weak and naïve? When have we ever achieved anything in the way of diplomacy or peace making by lobbing verbal grenades from far way and not by meeting with theses guys? Nixon went to China and met with Mao. Kennedy talked to Khrushchev. We will not diffuse global tensions unless we’re willing to get in the room and Obama was the first candidate who was prepared to say and do that."

Ms. Power began at a gathering in Sun City Las Vegas.

The Audacity of Convincing People to Vote for Barack

We had a great House Party meeting this evening with a group of Auburn residents, many of whom were undecided voters. Every attendee, even the undecided voters, purchased a copy of The Audacity of Hope.

That book convinced me to not only vote for Barack but to join the campaign. I can only hope all those who read the book will get fired up as well.

Pushing Beyond the Comfort Zone for Barack

After a couple of weeks of phone calling and sending nearly 100 postcards, we hosted our first house party for our precinct last week. We began by going around introducing ourselves and why we support Obama (or are undecided), then we watched the wonderful DVD introducing Barack. Our local field organizer and a campaign policy person were there to address concerns and add to the discussion. After two hours of refreshments, questions, and lively conversation, the undecided voters were leaning a little closer, and one "leaner" turned into a signed supporter. Although I was hoping for more people, I know the ripple effect is important. The attendees will talk to other undecided voters about Obama.

For the party, I had a nicely typed up "speech" I was going to share about why I support Obama for president. When it was time for me to introduce myself, I spoke without my notes and most of my well-crafted points flew directly out of my head! But as I saw heads nodding to some of what I was saying, I realized it really didn't matter. Whether we were undecided or a fully-committed supporter, Barack Obama's message and tone have touched something in us that politicians normally don't reach these days. And whether I was eloquent and smooth, or a bit rough but genuine wasn't really the point -- we were all there because we care about our country and want a change--a change I know only Barack can bring!

I also did my first canvassing this past weekend. I know, I know....many people have been doing this for months. But I am more suited to creating signs for parades (and walking in parades), writing letters to the editor, bringing food to headquarters, and volunteering at events--and talking to friends and acquaintances about Obama and why I support him. I have had to push myself to do the hands-on outreach work--it's hard work for an introvert!

Door-knocking actually seemed more comfortable for me than the phone calling. Interacting face-to-face with folks in my neighborhood/precinct is "easier" than talking to a disembodied voice -- probably because of my oral history interviewing. That doesn't make it entirely comfortable.... And it's not something I would do for just anyone!

This election is different. This candidate is different. I don't want January 3 to arrive and feel like I haven't worked hard to help Iowa be the first step in putting Barack Obama in the White House. That's why I joined my precinct team.

So, don't be afraid to push yourself beyond your comfort zone! You aren't alone! We only have a couple of months before the caucus. You know what to do!

Reflections on Saturday’s Women for Obama House Party in Cedar Rapids

When the call went out about a Women for Obama House Party and the promise of a conference call with the Senator himself, of course we turned out! What was most interesting to me, though, was the variety of women who showed up. Don’t get me wrong – to be able to talk directly with Senator Obama was the highlight – but I can’t help but reflect on the interesting group of women who gathered on Saturday. First-timers to the political process (first-time voters, maybe?) seated next to seasoned veterans, across the table from women well-versed on so many topics, who sat next to women who listened without speaking.

Topics ranged from affordable child care to flex time to the ERA. (Just for the record, there were women who didn’t know that the ERA was the Equal Rights Amendment, so we had to do a quick history lesson for them.) And there was the added bonus of meeting Marianne Markowitz, the CFO for the whole Obama for President campaign, who came in from Chicago, just for the day.

The point of all my rambling is to say that Barack Obama is the best candidate for president because, just like he attracts the widest variety of people to his campaign, he will include the widest variety of people in changing this country! I’m always glad to hear Senator Obama say that he can’t change things by himself – he needs us! Everyone will have a seat at the table in the Obama administration. Thankfully.

Hi ya'll!

We had a house party for the first time here in Howard Co.

It was storming and I mean storming that night. But we had some great people show up that were from several of the towns surrounding Cresco. It was very nice to meet them all.

We talked about how we became involved in the polictical process. Each of us had very different stories but we all felt very very attached to Barack Obama mostly from hearing him speak and feeling the hope and inspiration that he brings to every place he goes.

We ate some food and planned to meet again in one month and bring more friends. This is going to be a tough nut to crack here in Howard CO. But we are going to get the fire started!

Numbers that never add up!

I am watching Gen Petraeus report to Congress on C-SPAN. Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen was brown-nosing the success in Iraq. As I listen the numbers that she regurgitated and then as I hear our Generals regurgitate the numbers of "progress", I keep thinking to myself, "We at the lowest level in the Army, can't report solid numbers"

The reason I say this is because, I've noticed that my time in the Air Force and Army,we report numbers that may or may not be accurate. I've noticed that people in general like to exaggerate to make them self look better or used as a tool to defend their actions.

Every time I hear reports, Its hard for me to believe reports of Data that reflect numbers because as the numbers make it up the chain of command, the numbers gets skewed. I currently deal with numbers and data that is reported to me and then to higher levels. I never feel comfortable with the data that I collect from the lower levels.

There are so many things that I wish was done right but I believe this war is going to be reported by numbers as to show progress. Remember Vietnam, that was all about skewed victories measured by enemy casualties.

Countdown for Change Party

I so badly want to host a Countdown for Change party on September 15. This will be the first major campaign event which I'm not participating in. I am in the process of moving, and that will be the next to last weekend I have to get my stuff moved.

I haven't yet seen any Countdown parties planned for Utah, but hopefully we'll see a few planned here. They don't have to be elaborate productions - host a small party for 5 - 10 people, your friends and neighbors. Even the fundraising goal isn't hard:

Depending on which early state you choose, set a fundraising goal for your house party that’s related to the number of days between the date of your event and the caucus or primary.

If you choose Iowa, your goal will be $121.
If you choose Nevada, your goal will be $126.
If you choose New Hampshire, your goal will be $129.
If you choose South Carolina, your goal will be $136.

East Lake Harriet House Party A Success!

We had a terrific house party in East Lake Harriet this afternoon. The 7 of us spent the afternoon getting to know each other, listening to the webcast and talking politics. Oh, and enjoying yummy treats! Everyone felt that Obama did a great job listening and really answering the questions from the audience. He covered key issues is a clear, understandable and accessible way. And we all agreed we're definately in need of a change in government's direction. Next time we'd like to hear more about his point of view on the environment and specific social issues.

We did have difficulty with the webcast and kept getting bumped off while it 'buffered'. Fortunately we got the conference call number off the website, dialed in on a blackberry and popped the call on speaker phone. How times have changed -- 50 years ago, we would have been crowding around a large cabinet radio -- today, listening intently to a blackberry the size of a candy bar!

What a great way to meet new people and get re-engergized. Thanks to everyone who came over: Ted, Joe, Michael, Caitlin, Miriam, Carl, Rebecca and her son.

Bowling for Obama "Roundup"

I organized Bowling for Obama "Get Out of the House" Party, which was held in conjunction with our "Honk for Obama" event this past Saturday and it went off great! I thought I would pass along some of the info about our event!

The idea was to kick off the house party season in the Seattle area, have fun and raise money. After spending the last 4 years in Democratic Politics, I know how crucial the FUNdraising events are for campaigning, thus the "Get Out of the House" Party concept was born. We had about 40 attendees and raised over $1000 for the campaign and had a fantastic time! We'll be doing it again, for sure! We even had buttons and bowling shirts made up for the event!

We asked everyone to pledge a certain percentage of their score for Obama and after the game, they made the donations, which was a great way to integrate the activity with the giving. The event brought out both Obama devotees and people interested in just learning about him. We even sold signs and a shirt to the bowling alley staff! Please comment on my blog if you would like more info about the event or if you are interested in info/materials for organizing "Bowling for Obama" in your area! I can even get you info for a union print shop that orders and prints our bowling shirts (the printer is an huge Obama supporter)!

Middle of North Dakota -- We Need A March 31st House Party!

What a fantastic map on the Obama '08 Home Page! I'll toss out this challenge to the Minnesota movement -- we need a "pin dot" in the middle of North Dakota! When you look at the map it looks like there are no Obama supporters in North Dakota -- YET right now there are 4 house parties in North Dakota (HOORAY!!) -- but because they are all along the eastern border the state looks empty. Time to email family and friends to see if we can't get a couple of parties out on the prairie! Anybody else up for the challenge??

I am happy to report that Bowling for Obama was a great event--we had great turnout and raised over $1000 for Obama!!!! Donations will be mailed out ASAP to make the March 31st deadline!!!!!

We would like to thank the Garage for covering the cost of shoe rental for all attendees!

I would also like to thank everyone who attended, we had so much fun!!! We'll definitely do it again!

House Party DVD Arrived Today! EXCELLENT!

In today's mail was my Obama Hope. Action. Change. house party DVD! It's excellent! You get a wonderful overview of his background, his charachter and hope for the future.

The DVD included s video clips to help you share information about Barack and get others excited:

House Parties: Can You Take the Lead?

I'm sure that most of you, by now, have heard about the national community House Party day (hosts invite friends, neighbors, associates, etc.) set for March 31. Given that Sen. Obama will be speaking to those hosting events via conference call, the events are certain to be somewhat exciting. Additionally, hosts will be receiving a DVD w/an important message from Sen. Obama.

UNFORTUNATELY, I'm going to be out of town for the last 8 days of March and the first 2 of April, so if I'm partying at a House Party, it won't be mine or yours, and it will have to be in Oakland.

You all *know* that I'd be representing our group w/ one of these events if I were going to be around. So, is there anyone in our group who is ready, willing and able to host? I'd be happy to help do whatever I could before I have to leave.

House Parties -- How to Host

I found this very cool bit of info in the comments section attached to another great blog piece that I highly recommend, recounting how Deval Patrick used the kind of 'new politics' Obama is talking about to win in MA (here is a link to that piece: Link />The information I found interesting, though, was a set of directions on how to get on the list to host a house party. MoveOn.org used house parties regularly and well in 2004, and I expect that Obama will be using very similar strategies this time. House parties are a *great* way to meet folks and gear up the energy! I think this is the kind of thing that local groups can really hit the ground running with. Here are the directions as I found them:

Obama Blog and Event Roundup

This is the first in a series titled Obama Blog and Event Roundup that I hope to publish daily.

Jack has some very insightful writings on his blog. I especially like his recent entry, titled "The War in Iraq: demonstrating to our friends that Barack has wisdom".

He starts off with this statement:

Most of our friends are concerned about Barack Obama's experience, and whether or not he will have what it takes to guide this country forward in a world full of uncertainties and dangers.

And goes on to ask some really good questions, before showing, via quotes from Obama, how Obama has shown a lot of wisdom in his political history. Jack makes some very good points that could easily be used to talk with people on the subject of "Is Barack experienced enough?"
