Meeting with Zoe Lofgren

"Politics of the possible"

Tuesday, September 1, my SO and I had a face to face meeting with our congresscritter, Rep. Zoe Lofgren.

I had emailed her office last week, asking to set up a meeting. They called me Monday, said she'd had cancellations, could I come the next afternoon for a ten minute meeting. Of course I said yes - I'm unemployed, and live a few blocks away, but even if I'd been working I would have taken time off.

Knowing full well that ten minutes just wouldn't be enough to cover all of the issues I was concerned with, I typed up a list - my own words, the real concerns I had.

At the top of that list was healthcare. Then came GLBT issues. Then economy and finance, and more.

We brought copies, one for us, one for Zoe, one for her aides.

Yes, she has to be diplomatic, she has to negotiate with the rest of the House. She declined to comment on my sentiment that Grassley and Baucus were a waste of space. I felt like she was trying not to chuckle.

But I also felt that she needed to hear from the little people - the working (or unemployed) person, the woman trying to start a small consulting business, the people paying the highest tax rates when working because they're gay, childfree renters without tax shelters.

If people like me are willing to fork over for singlepayer, or at least a strong public option, then the rest of the contry can give up a little for the assurance that they and their children will have healthcare regardless of their economic circumstance.

She agreed with me on the GLBT items, talked about trying to get some of the more strident religious folks to see how gay marriage really isn't a threat to their religious freedom.

She told me, she has to be diplomatic, but as an activist, I don't.

Activists and advocates don't need to put their positions in terms of compromise, and we shouldn't.

The right wing knows this, and is ready to fling shit.

We need to push, and hard. We need to let our congresspeople know what we need.

Believe me, Rep Lofgren will be seeing me again. I'll be keeping track, and there will be praise given or questions asked.

Your Reps work for you. Make the time to go see them. Write down your concerns, so they have stuff to take back to Washington with them.

The New Girl in Town on Change...

So, for a while now I've been wanting to blog. I guess it would only be appropriate if I do so on a site that I love so very much. Barackobama.com. As an introduction to myself I am a; Mother, Wife, Sister, Friend, Poet, Novelist (soon to be published hopefully), Midwife-to-be, and all around Feminist! All while being able to leap any obstacle in a single bound. I AM SUPERWOMAN...less the cape blowing in the wind! I contribute greatly to my community, East Garfield Park in Chicago, especially to the women and their children who reside here. It is one of my great hopes that I will wake up to a better existence here in America. When that day arrives, we will owe it to the life altering seeds that we have collectively help to plant.

My partner and I have six children and we had to fight for proper education of those children in Chicago Public Schools. I am sure that every poor American has also had to endure this battle. To gain a better level of education and educational resources my children awake everyday at 5a.m. From there they are bused out of their community to receive that just education that their mommy and their forefathers fought to capture and retain.

In as much Certified Professional Midwifery care for women, which I know for a fact provides superior maternal, infant, and family unit support and medical care is a felony in the state of Illinois. Yet within most minority communities, especially the African American community, the infant mortality, maternal mortality, and cesarean rates are up. As a contras, adequate social and health care support is down. Imagine women going to jail and being fined for providing a safe haven for women and adequate medical support!

A just educational system and adquate health care is the fight I wake up with every morning. Yet, I will not be moved. As long as there is breath in me, and I know what is right; I will speak out, support President Obama, and work towards the betterment of my community, the American Community. Mercy,Charity,Justice, and dignity starts at home! What better time to be an activist and activate yourself into a culture of humanity.

Keesha

OBAMA Administration: Equal Rights for All

This is the content of the Whitehouse Civil Rights platform, as posted on January 21, 2009. Currently, on this site, which is a holdover of discussions before the election of November 4, these were not spelled out. They are now, and we will hold this Administration to answer for them.

Support for the LGBT Community

"While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect."
-- Barack Obama, June 1, 2007

VERY Disappointed

I am heartbroken and disappointed by Mr. Obama's choice of Rev. Rick Warren to deliver the invocation. To chose someone who has been grossly opposed and insulting to a group of people who overwhelmingly supported Mr. Obama's bid for the White House is nothing less than a slap in the face. I don't feel as though Mr. Obama wants to be my president (or any liberal-minded democrat's), but wants more to prove to right-wingers that he will be their president too. I am all for listening to differing views, but to give such an historic voice to this blatant bigotry is WRONG.

Black Voters, Gay Voters - The Bait and Switch

Yet Another Glass Ceiling With Many Cracks...

I write this blog post in a moment of bittersweet victory. Having campaigned my heart out for Barack Obama over the last 3 months, I am overjoyed at our victory and feel that real change is finally coming to Washington and Main Street.

On election night, I partied in the street on the West side of Fort Lauderdale - a gay white boy surrounded by black people, most of whom were probably heterosexual. It could not have made a difference at the time, because we were all so optimistic and excited. The following morning was a different experience entirely... My friends and I were informed that Amendment 2 had passed and that not only would gay marriage now be outlawed but also civil unions and commonlaw marriages would be denied legal status.

So drops the other shoe.

The most disappointing part of the experience was the media coverage. Every news station was telling us that Black People were to blame... That all of the blacks who came out in droves to vote for Barack Obama had not listened to his supportive speeches and had voted specifically and willfully against my rights... The media maintained that Black people had not returned the "favor" of equality.

I'm not buying it. Here's something that the media is not telling us:

According to the same exit polls from CNN which indicate that Blacks voted for Prop 8 & Amendment 2 at higher percentages than whites, there is a key bit of information that needs to be explored - The total number of black voters for the anti-gay amendments is still not even 1/3 the total number of white, Evangelical voters who voted for the Amendments in the rural areas of the state... In fact, most black voters did not vote on Amendment 2 at all...

It is unfair, unreasonable and devisive for the mainstream media to pit blacks and gays against eachother at a time when we should all be celebrating eachother's diversity... As a white, gay male who supported and voted for Barack Obama with all my energy, I can honestly say that I have not experienced the slightest amount of homophobia from anyone in the Campaign For Change. I have never really felt any exceptional homophobia from the Black community at large, either...

Furthermore, it was not black people who put this Amendment on the ballot in the first place. Once again, this hateful bit of legislation has been brought to you by those "true Americans" who live in the remote grassy knolls that you drive by on your way to better places.

I think it's time to stop blaming races and sexual orientations for problems which are largely brought to us by Republicans. That's the other missing statistic here... Those who voted for John McCain also voted 91% in favor of Amendment 2.

It's time for Black people and Gay people alike to stand up for ourselves and refuse to let Republicans and the mainstream media continue to assail us in the name of "divide and conquer"...

God Bless all of you who helped on this campaign and remember to keep your cool and love your neighbors... even the bigoted ones. We shall overcome.

We, the GLBT community, must ACT to bring the change that we desire

Dear GLBT family,

Can you see the beautiful golden glow of the dawn of our community's first truly happy morning together, in celebration of our victory over centuries of lies, murder, oppression and inequalities against our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters by state and ecclessiastical authorities?

At first, I felt disappointment when it seemed that Barack hadn't clearly stated his committment to the restoration of the civil rights that gays and lesbians are guaranteed by our Constitution. But then, as I observed him, and then after he released his several clear messages to our community, I had hope for the first time in my life that my Sweetheart and I might be able to live together in the same country (in America) after Barack's elected president. My beloved Dzmitry lives a harsh existence in a small homophobic European country called Belarus. Discriminatory U.S. law doesn't recognize my family relationship with him, because we're of the same sex, so I cannot bring him here to live with me as I could easily do if I were heterosexual. I keep thinking about what President Lincoln did to end the disgraceful and embarrassing dehumanization of our black brothers and sisters. He set them free by executive order, justly reversing what probably hundreds of more years would not have done!

My discernment tells me that Barack Obama and Joe Biden have come at just the right time. They are the only two candidates who have specifically and clearly stated that they will use their influence to clear away the debris that is still denying us our Rights - barred by hateful crowds of religious fanatics who have infiltrated and hijacked our federal and state governments and are trampling us like we're filth! The GLBT community may be the key lever to alter America's course so that our country doesn't lapse into a modern Taliban-like theocracy that would be far worse for us. Have you listened to all of Barack's talks and speeches, read his book, and read between the lines of what he and Joe have been saying to us? I'm filled with so much hope, yet the happy expectation as I ponder the immensity of the opportunity before us, makes it difficult for me to receive the hope. But the sobering reality of another possible alternative future that could overtake our country instead of a future with Obama, causes me to get off my duff and do everything possible to get him and Joe elected. But the sobering reality of another possibIe alternative future that could overtake our country instead of a future with Obama, causes me to get off my duff and do everything possible to get him and Joe elected. We have two choices - two very different futures for America and for the GLBT community. Obama is a modern compassionate leader who shares our vision and who wants America to be a beacon of hope for all humanity.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden, with our support, will represent us, protect us, and reverse the damage that has been done to our community and country by both parties of the worn out old-world mentality. We can be certain of this, because we know who we are, and Barack and Joe have reached out to us, and we can get them elected. So we must work now, immediately to do everything to get them elected.

We're part of a new generation beginning a new millenium. We're stepping out of the old and embracing the new. We've left all the hate and division behind us. We know that we're all ONE! Our time has come. It is here now. The dark clouds are rolling away and the warm, happy sunshine of liberty and justice will rise from our Great Republic of America, from two compassionate, wonderful men who represent the best of our African and our European ancestors! All people is America need healing. We, the GLBT community MUST ACT and bring on the change! Go vote for Barack!

I love you all, and I love Barack and Joe for what they are doing for our country!

Madison Reed

Huntington, West Virginia

http://www.lotusopening.blogspot.com

Not only is this inequitable, it's fuckin dismissive and disrespectful.” — Steven Driscoll, National Stonewall Democrats Board Co-Chair

Can anybody tell me why HRC had such prominence with the Obama Campaign once Hillary was officially out of the race? They even proffered their own handpicked trans person, a relative unknown to the trans community itself that they brought onto the business council, to be the campaign’s transgender steering committee member. And this for what support they’ve shown?

As Andrew Sullivan noted at the time Hillary dropped out, HRC’s own board of directors had given to the following presidential candidates’ campaigns:
That’s right, zero to Barack Obama’s campaign by the time Hillary Clinton had suspended her campaign. Immediately after, Obama graciously allowed HRC’s current and former executive director, and one of their board doing the speaking on a campaign conference call to the LGBT community (including, though rarely mentioning, the plethora of trans leaders who long worked the campaign). HRC even played petulant, suggesting it would take time for their ranks to come around and pleading for “patience” from the campaign until they decided to engage.

“Well I'll be damned, here comes your ghost again. But that's not unusualIt's just that the moon is full and you happened to callAnd here I sit, hand on the telephone,Hearing a voice I'd known a couple of light years agoHeading straight for a fall” — Diamonds And Rust, Joan Baez

“They were fast-moving opportunists encased in cynicism and proud of it.” — journalist, Jay Carr

For some reason, it seemed like a lot was going on while we were convened in Texas’ Democratic Convention last weekend. The economy tanked. Hillary Clinton suspended her campaign. And for trans supporters, Barack Obama held a conference call with the LGBT community. (No, I don’t get invitations to those things … I just volunteer on the campaign, organize, get others involved in volunteering and win a delegate slot to Denver instead. That’s plenty on the plate, I reckon.)

The Obama Campaign LGBT conference call focused on bringing in (of all people) HRC leaders, as in Human Rights Campaign or Hillary Rodham Clinton supporters – however you want to slice it. Indeed during the conference call, there was apparently some issue with the HRC (the group) focus and how “99% of the issues voiced” were gay or lesbian, while transgender was mostly never heard. For those in Trans America, we know we’re not Johnny-come-latelys and had long ago thrown our support to Obama (knowing Clinton’s gay/lesbian-only propensity).

Some of the trans participants in the conference call expressed surprise, hurt or “dismay” (as Donna Rose noted in her blog) at the focus of the subject matter due to HRC’s prominence in the call. For those who’ve been at this since the 90’s, especially old-line NTAC folk like me, having transgender being an equal part of something HRC-focused would’ve been the surprise. This opportunism and self-focus was classic HRC. If anything, how the conference call played out should serve to remind trans leaders that HRC is still HRC, and is still (as always) gay and lesbian. Period.

A Quick Fix?

Dear Fellow Americans,

Just short time ago Sarah Palin 44, a social conservative, former union member and mother of five has been governor for two years joins the GOP presidential ticket as John McCain’s running mate. This is JUST what McCain needs--so he says.

She is young, fresh, bright and attempts to paint McCain as the not so usual Washington puppet as we have ourselves done so in the past.

But really now, what do we know about Palin?

Introduction

Hi everyone,

I am posting here for the first time so thought I'd introduce myself. I am a blogger/podcaster/youtube video producer and I just got back from Denver. It was electric and I am fired up to do what I can to help Barack win. I've just signed up on this site, I plan to contact my election office Monday to see about being a poll watcher and I intend to be an active member in the GLBT Tennessee group here. I invite you to check out my regular blog (http://avalonfarmblog.wordpress.com) for posts from the DNC. I had a guest blogger in Denver: Marisa Richmond, Tennessee's first African-American transgender delegate. She posted daily from the convention floor at the Pepsi Center and Mile High Stadium. I was blogging from The Big Tent along with several hundred other bloggers. There were several exciting glbt events we covered including the HRC premier show with Melissa Ethridge, Cyndi Lauper and others. Cheers to all and let's go take our country back!

Peace & Love,

Val

Reel In the Hillary Voters Today!

Sensitivity Training: How To Talk To Hillary's Voters

My name is Jarrett. I am a life-long Democrat who campaigned and voted for Hillary Clinton in the highly contested swing state of Florida. Once again, Florida will decide the Presidential Election for the year 2008/09.

I have now switched my support to Barack Obama because his policies and outlook are far closer to my ideals than those of John McCain. The decision was easier for me than it will be for many Hillary voters because I am more familiar with the cut-throat nature of politics.

What I've noticed, since joining the Campaign for Change, is that many long-time Obama supporters don't really know how to effectively communicate with Hillary's supporters. Without further delay, I will explain the "do's and dont's" concerning the way we should solicit support from a Hillary Clinton voter like myself:

Remember H.I.L. (Humility, Interest, Love)

Humility - Hillary voters don't want to hear about you are the best and you beat them... They don't agree. We know that Hillary Clinton actually won the popular vote in swing states that will matter later on... If Obama supporters seem unaware of this inconvenient fact, they will appear foolish and egotistical to a Hillary supporter. The best thing you can say to a Hillary voter is "We REALLY need your vote/help in this election... We can only do it with support from motivated and knowledgeable folks like yourself."

Interest - Take a moment to hear what Hillary voters have to say and brace yourself... They might want to talk about how Hillary was railroaded by the media, about how sexism prevented her from winning, or about how she had the right idea concerning Universal Healthcare. You must NOT take these statements as a threat to the Obama campaign, but rather assume that these statements are a SUPPORT for the Democrats as a whole. Show the supporter that you agree with their concerns and that is why we need to stick together... Just remember that letting a Hillary voter do the talking will satisfy them - they want to educate YOU, not the other way around. The only thing they want to hear from you is that you are against Bush/McCain.

Love - Hillary solicited votes from Women, Young People, Gays and Lesbians and African Americans by speaking gently and lovingly about how much she cherishes each and every supporter. She speaks at great length about how amazing and inspiring each and every supporter is. You probably missed this if you were watching the mainstream media - but her supporters got wonderful HTML emails expressing gratitude and gifts and warm wishes. At her rallies, Hillary spent hours waving and smiling and shaking hands, and LISTENING to others. Quite frankly, this seems missing from the Campaign For Change because we are approaching crunch time. We need to always keep in mind that these are our neighbors, grandmothers, best friends, classmates and teachers. We have waited our whole lives to see a Female President of the United States of America and we are VERY concerned about Healthcare for our loved ones. Hillary voters WANT to support Barack Obama, but any percieved insult or indifference to Hillary as a person will steer them FAR away from that goal. Do not distract us with old arguments from the past. This is the NOW and we are all friends again.A good thing to say regarding this might be, "Gosh, it's really unfortunate that they wound up running against eachother in the primary because they are both such wonderful candidates."

Hillary voters MUST be reassured of the following things:

Barack Obama likes Hillary and appreciates her support in his campaign.

That Michelle Obama will be a phenomenal First Lady that we can all be proud of - JUST LIKE HILLARY IS.

Hillary is still in the game. She is a great asset to the Democratic party and to Barack Obama's campaign.

That Obama takes Healthcare very seriously and will create a path for Hillary's vision of proper care for EVERY American whereas John McCain simply does not care.

We LOVE Hillary too and we were never really "against" her... It's a race against John McCain and the corruption within the Bush Administration - Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton share a common vision and will work TOGETHER to clean up America!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and please forward it to only your friends who are active in the campaign so we can continue to Ba-Rock the Vote together.

- Jarrett For Obama/Biden '08

Hillary Supporters and or GLBT persons who question Barack

I am a 66 year old gay man and originally supported Hillary to be our next president. I knew where Hillary stood on human rights and on GLBT issues. I did not know much about Barack at all, and until just recently was not at all certain where he stood on GLBT issues.

The more I learned about Barack, the more I watched and listened to Barack, the more I believed he was the right choice for our next president, --- yet I was still not sure where he stood on GLBT issues. I understand the challenges he is facing and the prejudice many have against him. I understand he doesn’t need more prejudice based doubts from his constituents by being “out” about supporting GLBT issues. Still I needed to KNOW if he was going to stand up for equal rights for me as a gay man. I also did not know how to answer all the questions I got from my friends who were either GLBT and or Hillary supporters.

All those doubts and questions have been put to rest by watching one video. Michelle Obama’s speech at the DNC Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council in New York City is very powerful and put all questions or doubts I may have had to rest.

I think it is a must see for any LGBT and or Hillary supporting persons to watch. This one video can have a major impact on any voter that may be temped to vote for McCain because of their personal disappointment about Hillary not getting the nomination.

getting event invites

The invitations are starting to come--in the mail AND by email. I don't know which ones to choose!

So far I'm going to the Unconventional Women Symposium, the Airplane Pilots party, and a panel discussion hosted by Chevy Chase. Next, I have to make sure I can get in to the Daily Show tapings.

I've downloaded 16 pages of convention related events and activities. They were published to compare to the lame Republicans events.

I really hope some group, like GLBT gets Kathy Griffin and Margaret Cho perform at a party. That would be amazing.

OK - I am still learning Obamas position on the issues (especially GLBT issues)...not easy to find. What sealed the deal for me was the interview with his family...you can tell everything about someone through their eyes and the eyes of their family...genuine to the core!! Was it right to do the interview? ABSOUTELY 1000%...keep it real and be real Obama and you will win!

Obama on GLBT

I read an interesting interview in The Advocate discussing Obama's stance on GLBT. He's for civil unions, but still believes that the term marriage should be used for man/woman relationships. I disagree with that, but at least he believes that gays should get the same benefits as straight couples in committed relationships. He also said something to the effect that the GLBT community should not wait for him, or any president, to give them their freedom where rights are concerned. I imagine he meant that to be empowering, but is it hard for people who are gay to hear that, when so much of their lives is dictated by the government?

It was truly a joyous experience having crowds of people yelling for Obama, yelling for us, the Obama supporters. Joann and I had made Obama Pride logo buttons and I passed out about 500 Obama buttons which didn't even last half way through the route. People were SO excited to get Obama stickers and buttons!

The Obama group won the parade's People's Choice award! Joann took photos as she marched: http://www.flickr.com/photos/buttons4obama/sets/72157605909020106/

Great work Jen and Jake for organizing this wonderful event!

P.S.I said in a recent post I stated I was going to get the Obama Pride video ready for the iPhone.
Unity has invigorated this campaign!

In the past month, especially just since our Unity district-wide event this past Saturday in Fremont, CA, that drew 150 mostly brand new volunteers for Obama, I've seen a thunderclap of energy erupt in this campaign that I only dreamed of in the primary season.

Don't get me wrong, we've had great energetic volunteers throughout this odyssey. We wouldn't have gotten here without them, and we share the beginnings of this astounding movement that's taken the nation, and the world, by storm - we were at the birth, together.

But there are three new groups, new additions to the Obama Family, that we are all so happy to be working with, at last: Hillary's devoted supporters, the entire local Democratic Party family, and all the new or reenergized political participants fired up to be part the historical triumph of the grassroots in November.

I want you all to have a sense of how intense this desire to be part of change, to get out of the armchair, turn off the TV, and get out and talk to people, has become, because you won't know it from the media. Not from mainstream media, not from the pundits trying to out-yell each other, not even from the liberal blogosphere. Those are all competing for the same audience, thriving on conflict more than solutions, parsing people into categories as if we were still more separate than united. To see the reality, let me share our events.

Hello Obamaland and the GLBT Community - Help Needed

I have been a member of Obamaland since the beginning of March but as you can see I haven't blogged much. However, I am a regular blogger in the DNC.org blog called partybuilder and boy do we need help. We have a pretty diverse group that blog frequently, and some not so often. We still have a few of Rush's chaos pundits hanging around, quite a few staunch, die-hard, Hillary supporters who state they will write her in or vote other and some Republican Trolls that can be quiet nasty at times. A few others from partybuilder have recently sounded the alarm in here and watching them come in the other night one after the other was like watching the Calvary ride in! Yes, it's been that bad. But we are in need of more support, especially those of the GLBT Community.

We have many from the GLBT Community that are frequent bloggers in partybuilder but not one is an Obama supporter, if there are they don't say so. Since Hillary suspended her campaign we have had many new Hillary people from the Community joining and looking for answers to their questions. While there are many of us straight people that do our best to inform your presence is very much missed and very much needed.

Tonight, Friday the 19th, there will be a GLBT Forum to inform and educate people regarding Obama's stand on Gay Marriage, California's new law and his stand on Civil Rights for the GLBT Community.

Here are two links to two short postings from one of our Hillary members regarding the forum GLTB FORUM ON PB and Open Public Forum: GLTB Civil Rights And The Democratic Party

I hope you will join us with your Unity Spirit, not just today but as often and as much as you can.

Peace,

Jan

p.s.

Jan CO in partybuilder

One Voter's Thoughts on The Advocate Interview

If the internet is a race, I should've posted this a few days ago. Maybe that only matters if you're blogging for money. I'm not, which is why I didn't post this a few days ago when, well, I was working for money.

But yeah, there was this interview. I realize most of you weren't sitting around like I was, waiting for this interview to be published. I certainly wasn't alone in my anticipation, though. The Advocate's opening question asked Obama to address what had become a growing criticism of his making us wait so long for an interview with what many consider to be the flagship news magazine of the LGBT press.

To continue reading this post on my blog, please click here.

Michelle Obama Rally @ WSSU

Todays rally at WSSU for Michelle Obama was an truly awesome experience! Mrs. Obama spoke with such compassion and you could feel in your soul how much she believes in her husbands ability to be our next President. At the close of the event she shook my hand and we hugged. I shared with her how much my partner and I love her as do many in the GLBT community for taking a stand in support of equality for us all!

Barack Obama waded deep into Clinton
territory Thursday evening at a private LGBT
fund-raiser in New York City where the price of
admission was $2,300 per person.

Held at the apartment of GLSEN founder and
executive director Kevin Jennings and his partner,
Jeff Davis, the event drew about 125 people and
raised $170,000. No press were admitted, but based
on several accounts, attendees were struck by the
Illinois senator’s candor as well as his fluency
with LGBT issues.

“I’ve been to many events over the past 10 years
of candidates running for office,” said Corey
Johnson, one of the hosts, “This was the most
forthright, eloquent, and detailed stuff I’ve heard
from a politician [regarding gay issues].”

Molly Lenore, 43, compared Obama’s discussion of
the LGBT community to the speech he gave about race
in America last week. “During his race speech,
everybody said afterward that he treated the
American people like adults, and I felt like that’s
what he did,” said Lenore, who is transgender and an
Obama supporter. “I might not agree 100%, but I want
to have an intelligent conversation with somebody.”

According to those present, Obama spoke for about
30 to 35 minutes about queer issues and then fielded
questions, most of which were not LGBT-specific.

Johnson, who is 25, has supported Obama for about
a year but prefaced his remarks by saying he has
never been an “Obama-phile.” He said the senator
addressed some of the most contentious LGBT issues
without prompting, such as same-sex marriage and the
inclusion of transgender people in the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act. In fact, those were the two
issues Sen. Obama singled out as being potential
disappointments to the LGBT community right now,
while he signaled that a hate-crimes bill could
likely be passed and signed into law and that repeal
of “don’t ask, don’t tell” might be on the horizon.

According to several sources, including Johnson
and Lenore, Obama said he did not think it was
“politically feasible” to secure marriage rights for
same-sex couples in the country at this point. Sen.
Obama acknowledged that the community wanted full
marriage rights but said that he favored civil
unions for now while leaving open the possibility
that his position might evolve in the future.

In terms of ENDA, Obama said he supported an ENDA
that included transgender protections but that he
didn’t believe a fully inclusive bill had enough
votes to pass the Senate at this time.

 “I don’t agree -- I think we’re much stronger
united as a community,” Lenore said of keeping
transgender protections in the bill. “But I do
understand the politics and I do appreciate the fact
that he said, hey, it’s not going to pass in this
political climate. Many other politicians haven’t
really done that. They make decisions but they never
really address the trans community.”

Should he become president, Obama said his first
three priorities would be designing a safe exit
strategy for Iraq, working on affordable health
care, and addressing greenhouse gases and the
environment.

As Sen. Obama made his way to the door, Johnson
said he asked the senator directly to do more
interviews with the gay press, citing the fact that
he has conducted only one interview with an LGBT
outlet during his presidential campaign. “I said,
‘Your speech tonight was so moving to all of us, the
way you spoke about our community. You need to do
more [interviews],” recalled Johnson. “And he said,
‘You’re right, absolutely. We do need to do more
with the LGBT press.’” (Kerry Eleveld, The Advocate)

DNC Chairman Dean is Right

DNC Chairman, Dr. Howard Dean, was reported on PlanetOut.com as critizing GLBT people, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans for aligning themselves with the Republican party and its platform. The Gay and Lesbian members of the Log Cabin Republicans group reported that they were insulted by Dr. Dean's words, ("Who in their right mind, if they were African-American or Hispanic or Asian-American, if they were gay or lesbian, would join the Republican Party?"). Has the Republican Party ever stepped up for its GLBT members and people of color who align with the Republican Party?

Wake up America

I have always had a definate opinion when it comes to politics and presidential races. In the past, I have voted republican for every presidential race since I was 18. This was often to the dismay of many of my friends. I have been ridiculed for voting for George Bush, called names, and caused quite a stir among my small group of GLBT friends. I must confess, it was not because I was a huge fan of the republican candidate, but because the Democrats couldn't put up a candidate worth voting for. Let's face it, Gore and Kerry haven't exactly been the sharpest knives in the drawer. Bill Clinton was a disgrace to the office of President, and by in large, the Democratic Party has been so self righteous on deciding what was best for us sad, uneducated, and pitiful folk, that in any good conscience, I could not support them.

Just when I thought I'd be resigned to voting once again, not for someone I was enthusiastic about, but rather choosing from the lesser of two evils, along comes Sen. Obama. The first time I heard his name was while watching the 2004 Democratic National Convention. I was impressed with his speech, but figured he was just the flavor of the day and paraded in front of the camera to show the party's sad attempts to show how they are "equal employment opportunitst". When he was elected to the senate, i decided to do a little research on the man. I read his book "The Audacity of Hope" and began to read every article I could find on him. I truly find this man to be a breath of fresh air. He says what he believes and acts accordingly. He doesn't say what he thinks people want to hear him say, but he speaks the reality of the situation. Certainly unlike his opponent Hillary who will say anything or do anything to get a vote and gain power to continue their "dynasty". He's the real deal. I am 44 years old, and no one in my lifetime, including Reagan, has united people like him. for the first time in my life, I'm excited to vote!

In closing, I hope the American people can see thru the deceitful, do anything at any cost, tactics of Hillary Clinton. I hope they start to realize the fine line Senator Obama must walk as to not offend white voters, while not disassociating himself from the African American voters. Hillary will continue to use subtle "race" comments (or at least her stooges as to distance herself from it) to remind the white folk that he's not one of us, and trying to cause dissention among the African American community because Sen. Obama doesn't speak out more vigorously against these comments. She is evil and will stop at nothing to get the nomination. We cannot allow our country to miss the opportunity to finally send someone to Washington who does what he says he will do and can unite this country. I could continue to ramble, but I'll save it for my next blog Yes we can change Washington, yes we can be united, yes we can defeat Hillary Clinton and turn the page on the "Bush-Clinton" years. It's time for change, it's time for Barack Obama. God Bless the United States of America and God Bless and keep Senator Barack Obama.

Proud to be Gay and Supporting Obama

I am a gay male living in Chester County, PA who has been out as a gay male since my late-teens. I came out to some of my friends in high school, family after graduating high school, and was openly gay (for the most part) while active duty military in the mid-1980s. I am also living with HIV disease and have been HIV positive for nearly 23 years and am open about this fact with everyone in my life and have always been so. I believe that these two facts play an important role in my life and have shaped my political views. However, I have to admit that I was raised by two liberal Democrats in the SF Bay Area, which certainly helped provide me a framework for such political views.

Prior to moving to Chester County, PA in August 2007, I lived in Washington, DC from spring 1984 until the time I moved here; except for 1 year when I lived in Olympia, WA to care for my dying father. During the years of being in Washington, DC I was a part of the Government industry (as it were) under many different administrations. (See personal blog titled "Hope" that was posted on 2/13/08 for more details.)

As a gay man living with HIV, I have witnessed a great deal of inequality and inequity within the various social, political, and cultural groups and/or environments within the U.S. I witnessed the lack of compassion and support from the Reagan administration of people living with HIV disease. I witnessed and experienced the discrimination toward people living with HIV disease by both the heterosexual and GLBT communities. I have witnessed the inequities of health care for people living with HIV disease. I have witnessed and experienced the inequality and discrimination of GLBT people within the military and in the larger social context. (Although I personally have never experienced discrimination because of being gay outside of the military.) Even with all these experiences, I remain a proud and open gay man and open about my HIV status.

The reason I am supporting Senator Barack Obama is simple: His message of hope. I am a firm believer that hope is an important element to life. It is hope that gives me the ability to continue to fight and thrive. It is hope that gives me the strength to survive a few near-death experiences. It is hope that gives me the motivation to continue to believe in the democratic process that we hold so dear in these United States. It is hope that allows me to see that change can happen. It is hope that underlies everything.

This is the first time in my 44 years of living that I have been involved in a political campaign. This is the first time in my life that I have ever contributed money to a presidential candidate. Quite simply, this is the first time that I feel a presidential candidate is concerned about me, my issues, my concerns, etc. This is the first time that a presidential candidate has inspired me and touched me at the mental, emotional and spiritual levels.

Peace,

Mickey

Opening Remarks

2 days ago I believed in nothing. Talking with my mother on the phone I exclaimed "I can not care this year. Give me a democrat, anyone, and I will vote for them. No matter their policy, no matter their ideals, I will vote for whatever democrat we put on the chopping block." In return for this outcry of disgust with our system, my mother insisted I watch Sen. Obama speak. Reluctantly I visited this website, and clicked play on the video of Barack Obama speaking at Tulane University. Quietly, I sat there, listening, watching a man impress upon me the importance of striving to create change. I didn't want to believe in him, I didn't want to be let down again with a stolen and corrupt election. Speech after speech though I watched, unable to stop myself. I could not get enough of the Hope he presented to me. 8 years of hate and fear filled government have left me feeling desolate and hopeless about America. 8 years of policies designed to limit my rights as a women and GLBT citizen. 8 years of fearing my government. Barack Obama spoke to me through this haze of fear, he reached out to me and showed me that we can make change happen. I truly believe that Barack Obama is the leader our country needs to pull ourselves out of this mess, to get back on the right track and bring equality and justice back to America.

I plan on using this blog to document and explore my experiences not just as a GLBT citizen, but as a trans woman fighting for Hope in America.

Hillary as a candidate of change?

Hillary failed miserably with her health care plan during her husband's presidency, so how can she in all honesty, belittle Barack over his program? She says she's been a candidate of change for 35 years? She hasn't done anything. She has not made any difference in this world in the past 35 years. She wasn't even famous until the Bill Clinton sex scandel. Being the first woman president is change, says Hillary. Well, so is having a monkey as president. This country needs real change, not an angry woman that simply wants more power.

I have never been excited about politics before. I assumed there was never any hope, this country was never going to change. Thank you for sparking that fire within me, Barack! North Carolina and the GLBT community of Charlotte, NC is behind you, Barack!!

We had "the talk"...

A few days ago I had "the talk" with Zachary, my seven year old. NO, not the "birds and the bees" talk, but a talk about homosexuality and what being gay means.

While you all are aware of who I am supporting for president, so are my children. Both Zach and Andrew are huge Obama supporters (well, as huge as you can be at 7 and 5). Recently, I have overheard Zachary making statements like "I hate Mitt Romney" or "Mitt stinks".

Now, I am not a Romney fan, but I don't want my kids walking around saying things like that. If, by some crazy chance, Romney does get elected, I want the children to respect him as our president. I don't want their views of him tainted by the things that I believe.

Anyway, back on track here.....

I felt that it was time to talk with Zachary about the differences between the candidates. I want him to understand that I don't HATE Mitt (or any other candidate) I just might not agree with them on some issues. Of course, this means I have to discuss the issues. And while discussing these issues I need to keep it on a seven year old level.

I started by explaining just that. That I just don't agree with Mitt on the issues. Of course, my brilliant little man wants to know more. Like "what issues".

Me: "You know 'X' right? What do you think of him?

Zachary: "I think he's a good guy."

M: "Do you think he is married?"

Z: "Yeah"

M: "Well, actually, he isn't."

Z: "But he probably has a girlfriend, right."

M: "Actually, no, he doesn't. He's gay. Do you know what that means?"

Z: "No."

M: "Well, it means that he falls in love with boys."

Well, Zach CRACKS UP! He thinks that this is the funniest thing that I have ever told him...either that or he is SO embarrassed that he doesn't know what else to do. Eventually, he pulls himself together (as much as a 7 year old can) and we move on.

M: "Right now, because of the laws, 'X' can't get married like boys can get married to girls. This is one of the reasons that I am voting for Obama. Mitt Romney doesn't believe that he should be allowed to." - Keeping it on his level I decided not to explain the difference between civil unions and marriage...

Z: "Well, if he just changed his mind, then he could get married."

M: A little giggle on my part...."It doesn't work that way, man. Gay people are born that way. 'X' was born to like boys, not girls. You can't change being gay, because you are born that way."

Z: "Well, you weren't born that way and Daddy wasn't born that way and I.......was I born that way?"

And now it's my turn to laugh that nervous laughter...

M: "Well, I don't know, baby. I guess that is something you will figure out as you get older."

We went on to discuss a few more of my friends that are gay and eventually, the conversation turned to civil rights (which I compared to what MLK Jr did for African Americans because that is what he knows).

Then he asked me about more issues...and I did my best to explain my thoughts on the war and social security on seven year old terms.

It was not an easy conversation but in it I realized something: my parents never had this conversation with me. This is not because they were homophobic (actually quiet the opposite, they were always comfortable with my gays friends and never discouraged my relationships with them). But the world is changing.

Part of this every changing world terrifies me - it terrifies the mother in me. The other part of me is SO excited about this changing world - the part of me that loves "X" with all my heart, the part that wants for "his" world and "my" world to be equal in so many ways, the part that has never understood why EVERY human being is not treated equally.

Children today seem to be oversexualized (ask me someday about the time I took Allyson school shopping while trying to keep the school dress code in mind) and never seem to get enough attention. I wonder about this...

Recently a person from an online forum that I am part of blamed all this change on "the pill" - as in the birth control pill. He claims that due to the ease of pregnancy prevention women have stopped having children, raising children and the world has been in a downward spiral ever since.

Now, I don't agree with this person but I wonder how close this is to true...

I wonder when we (and I am not talking just women here, men too) lost sight of what is important. I wonder when we stopped worrying about so much abut who was raising our children and started worrying more about keeping up with the "Joneses". I wonder when we changed so much and what brought us to this.

I digress....

I was so happy with the outcome of Zach's and my conversation. It was such a big boy conversation and he handled it so well. We saw "X" this weekend and it was like nothing had ever been discussed.

While it terrifies me to have a conversation like this with my little man, I am so proud of him. No matter how hard it is to have these conversations - it is so important that he learns to be open minded, openhearted and kind and children learn that in their home. I am so proud that he has never once judged someone by their skin color, sexual orientation or otherwise.

This is what I want my boys to be! These are the men I want to raise! What better way to raise these young men than by having a president that encourages this as well? I hope that Barack realizes (whether he wins the nomination or not - though I am doing my best to be sure that it happens) how many lives he has changed and will continue to change as long as he keeps fighting the good fight!!

To all members of allGLBTforObama i thank you for your hard work

I started this group when i first joined this campaign back in early febuary. I tried to set an example where we could have a group of educated members, or those willing to become educated on the issues, who cared enough to spend time and discuss the issues of the GLBT. Well i am happy to say i am impressed with the educated discussions going on here. many of you have done your research well. This group really has it going on.

Lately i have been busy with field work and blogging outside the site and so i haven't had much time to get here as i am so busy.

Remember though i just started the group but you all make the group special.

thanks Danielle

Barack Obama: Please Make Everyone Welcome at Gospel Concert!!

Barack Obama has shocked and disappointed many of us with the news that he will appear with an anti-gay evangelical gospel singer Donnie McClurkin. McClurkin was a favorite of George Bush, during his 2004 campaign. His work promoting anti-gay ballot measures in 2004 mobilized right-wing voters.

America Blog writes: "Funny how Obama is a big supporter of civil rights when blacks are being maligned, but not so much when gays are the victims. Kind of puts his screw up over General Pace's homophobia in a whole new light."

Pams House Blend writes: "McClurkin believes one can pray away the gay, that it is a choice, and, according to Keith Boykin, Donnie McClurkin compares gays and lesbians to liars."

And from Truth Wins Out: "We strongly urge Obama to part ways with this divisive preacher who is clearly singing a different tune than the stated message of the campaign," said Truth Wins Out's Executive Director Wayne Besen. "We can only hope that Obama is unaware of McClurkin's anti-gay history and will swiftly condemn such intolerance. Real leadership includes standing up to those who drive wedges between the American people."

Still, Obama continues to back Donnie McClurkin. He released the following statement on his website:

"I have clearly stated my belief that gays and lesbians are our brothers and sisters and should be provided the respect, dignity, and rights of all other citizens. I have consistently spoken directly to African-American religious leaders about the need to overcome the homophobia that persists in some parts of our community so that we can confront issues like HIV/AIDS and broaden the reach of equal rights in this country. I strongly believe that African Americans and the LGBT community must stand together in the fight for equal rights. And so I strongly disagree with Reverend McClurkin's views and will continue to fight for these rights as President of the United States to ensure that America is a country that spreads tolerance instead of division."

It is hard to grasp why Obama would choose to continue to appear with someone who has a track-record of attacking the LGBT community. Given the General Pace Incident, it's only natural that LGBT community members would be concerned by Obama's decision to stand on stage with an anti-gay minister Donnie McClurkin. Top Democrats have been telling us what we want to hear for years, but actions speak louder than words. And this action is troubling.

Barack Obama is best advised to pull Donnie McClurkin out of the gospel concert lineup. If he insists on moving forward with McClurkin, however, he should make a genuine effort to show the LGBT community that we are welcome. Unfortunately these kinds of debates often play out as "evangelicals vs. gays" or "African Americans vs. gays". This means that unfortunately, LGBT Christians and LGBT African Americans are left out of the debate.

Let's change that.

Obama can demonstrate that the LGBT community is welcome at this Gospel Concert, by inviting an LGBT Gospel Choir to perform alongside the other performers. I know here in Washington DC, we have an amazing gospel choir at the Washington DC Metropolitan Community Church. I would venture to guess that at least one of the Metropolitan Community Churches in South Carolina has an excellent gospel choir as well.

If Barack insists on keeping Donnie McClurkin at this gospel concert, he must demonstrate that LGBT folks are welcome and part of this event. LGBT community members need a president who will do and say the right things not just at LGBT community forums, but all the time. At this moment, Obama has an opportunity to demonstrate that.

Any surprises?

http://visiblevote08.logoonline.com/2007/08/13/who-got-your-vote-any-surprises/#comment-1821

All through the weekend since Thursday, visitors to the site here have been asked to “Sound Off” and place a vote for the candidate they’re most behind.

Which could mean both who they thought performed well during the VisibleVote08 Presidential Forum on Thursday night (which you can watch again tonight at 9pm ET, if you missed it), and just who they support the most in general.

And the results may surprise you… As of 1:50pm today, here are the numbers:

WHO’S YOUR CANDIDATE?
Barack Obama 45%
Dennis Kucinich 25%
Hillary Clinton 14%
Mike Gravel 8%
John Edwards 5%
Bill Richardson 3%

Surprised? Obviously, Obama inspires and comes off amazingly well. And people respond to him as a maverick and a fresh voice. But is it surprising that he fares so much better than his biggest rival, Hillary Clinton? And would you have expected higher numbers for her?

Kucinich and Gravel benefitted from their warmly received, pro-gay performance on Thursday, but it’s hard to know whether Kucinich’s vast jump in the rankings here (he sort of trounced Clinton) translates to any real boost for him. More so, it demonstrates how enthusiastically gay voters respond to a candidate who embraces them and vows to fight for them.

And it looks like neither John Edwards nor Bill Richardson won themselves much of a gay boost in support… But might that change?

.......................................
It seems right to me with how Barack wants to repeal DOMA and has since 1996. Why clinton won't do this is beyond me. Or Edwards for that matter. Also barack has a forum on his site which is open to discussion whereas the others don't

go to http://my.barackobama.com see people scroll down to LGBT issues

http://pride.barackobama.com/page/content/lgbthome

Fundraising for "Come Out with Pride" Event

Attention everyone, this is an urgent request for financial assistance for our participation in the 3rd annual, GLBT event "Come Out With Pride", to be held at Lake Eola, on October 14th, 2007. We need to raise between $325-$435 for our booth space and parade participation (depending on walking in the parade vs. motorized vehicle in the parade) ASAP. Any and all donations will be accepted and VERY appreciated. Orlando 4 Obama in conjunction with Florida GLBT's for Obama are working together on this event. Our friends in Tampa/St Pete have made donations towards this event, let's show them our Orlando volunteers can raise $$ too. Please contact me ltsambug@cfl.rr.com, or 407-963-7387 to submit your pledge.

Thank you in advance for your swift response to this request!!!!!!!!!

Theresa & Laurie

Also barack has a forum on his site which is open to discussion whereas the others don't

go to http://barackobama.com see people scroll down to LGBT issues

http://pride.barackobama.com/page/content/lgbthome

full transcripts at my blog below

http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/danielleclarke/CJnX

Now who do I vote for??

I don't know who to vote for. I love Obama and Kucinich, I like Biden a lot too. I'm disappointed in everyone but Kucinich over the gay issue. I find it appalling that in our country some people still have to pay equal taxes for less than equal rights. I love Obama and I can't help but wonder how he'd have felt if black people weren't offered the right to marry, only to have something with all the same rights, just don't call it marriage. I missed their debate dealing with gay issues. I can't believe I missed it.

I'm a 54 year old Christian. I remember there was a lot of religious and political rhetoric about why we shouldn't have integration back in the sixties. Yes, if you're young believe it or not they used the bible to defend their RIGHT to integration. I remember John F Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy knowing how the country felt (the white people were all that counted back then) and saying they had to do what was right anyway.

Then years later, I was watching a special about the sixties with my then very young daughter. During a commercial she said, "that show is a lie! That stuff didn't really happen" and when I asked what was a lie she said (and it still brings tears to my eyes when I think of it today) Our country didn't make black people drink out of separate water fountains, go to different schools, not let them eat in restaurants!"

You talk about a rush of mixed emotions!! I was thrilled that a child could live in an America so greatly improved that she couldn't even believe we'd been that stupid. I was devastated because I had to explain to her the truth, that it was that cruel and unfair and yes, those horrible things and worse, did happen, they were born in ignorance and if not for Martin Luther King and the likes of John F. Kennedy, we might still be no better.

Now I'm looking forward to the day when my grandchild and I watch a special about the early 2000's.... and turns to me and says, "that can't be true! They're lying! We never kept gay people who were in love with each other from getting married! We never tried to keep them paying equal taxes for less than equal rights."

And I'm trying to decide who to vote for that will be the John F. Kennedy for gay people. And for the rest of us so we don't have to keep living in such ignorant times. I mean sure, the most important thing at the moment, the fire that must be out first, is Iraq... stop the killing, stop us having to live in the United States of Halliburton. But I'd really love to be a proud American. And that means cutting the most ignorant b.s. from our government rules.

Sure, Kucinich is willing to fight for their rights, but can he win? Probably not and if he can't win, then we have to figure out which democratic presidential hopeful will do the most good and the least harm in the cause of equal rights for equal taxes.
First Obama Blog Posting: Greetings to All

Just a note to say hello.

I'm excited about this campaign and -- since you're here -- presume you are too. Obama is how Democrats can win in 2008 without sacrificing our core beliefs. Obama is right on ending the war now, right on civil rights and equality, right on preserving our freedoms, right on jobs and health care. And he speaks with an eloquence and dignity lacking in American politics today.

A brief note about me: I'm a veteran of lots of campaigns and causes over the years, as both a professional campaign communications consultant in 130+ races and as a volunteer in a bunch of others. In the 2004 race I was an early Howard Dean supporter and was the GOTV Captain in Concord Ward 2 in New Hampshire for the primary. Also active over the years in GLBT and environmentalist causes here in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area (where I've lived for most my life and practice law).

I also publish the Politics1.com website (online since 1998). Check it out, as you can see lots more of my writing -- and you'll see I'm proud to be a liberal and proud to be an Obama supporter and contributor. I'll only post here once in a while because I write so much on Politics1.

Feel free to drop me a note and say hello. A new America begins on 01.20.07!

Take care,
Ron
