Presidential Inaugural Address Delivered by President Barack Obama on 20 Jan 2009

My fellow citizens -
I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.
That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.
These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.
Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met.
On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.
On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.
We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.
In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.
For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.
For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.
For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.
Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.
This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.
For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act - not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do.
Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions - who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.
What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.
Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control - and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart - not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.
As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort - even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.
For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.
To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.
To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.
As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment - a moment that will define a generation - it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.
For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.
Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends - hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism - these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.
This is the price and the promise of citizenship.
This is the source of our confidence - the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.
This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed - why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.
So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:
"Let it be told to the future world...that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet it."
America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

The Ohio Ground Game Dominates: Canvassing for Change in the Buckeye State

Canvassing is the meat and potatoes of the field effort here, and in that regard the Ohio Campaign for Change has created an incredible machine. Built by Neighborhood Team Leaders, operated by teams, this movement is almost totally run by volunteers. They take responsibility, and they get the job done.

And often "the job" means knocking on a lot of doors. Like a whole lot of doors. Like more than 385,000 doors in one weekend. Ohio took on the Obama field staff in Pennsylvania and avenged the Buckeyes' football loss by besting them by 7000 doors. Other statistics from that week include:

691,858 - Phone calls placed to fellow Ohioans by volunteers across the state last week
463,958 - Number of doors knocked last week
385,684 - Number of doors knocked last weekend
9,712 - Number of volunteers knocking doors last weekend to help beat Pennsylvania

Much of that ground firepower comes from setting up shop in areas that have never seen a field force from a Democratic candidate, ever--like in Dover, where a supporter created her own unstealable version of a yard sign

Reporting from Delaware, Ohio — John McCain has targeted this wealthy area just north of Columbus as one of 15 counties in Ohio where he needs to drive up his vote tally if he is to beat Barack Obama on Tuesday in this must-win state.

But on Friday night, only nine volunteers manned the 24 phones in the McCain campaign office. The phone bank began operating on a daily basis just two weeks ago. And only five people have shown up on most weekdays since then to canvas local neighborhoods.
Obama's campaign, in contrast, has flooded this Republican bastion with volunteers. Some canvassers first hit the winding streets of nearby subdivisions in March during the Democratic primary, and they have worked almost nonstop ever since in search of supporters.

Ohio is a battleground in the presidential race, and here's the view on the front line: McCain's get-out-the-vote operation has struggled to build momentum, and it appears outgunned by Obama's.

This time, the Democrats have shifted strategies -- and may have the upper hand.

Learning from the Bush effort, Obama has taken his fight directly into suburban and rural GOP strongholds in an effort to curb McCain's potential margins. Obama has 82 offices in the state, nearly twice as many as McCain. Labor unions are backing his effort with more than 12,000 volunteers.

"McCain does not have the kind of ground organization that Obama has, not even close," said Nancy Martorano, associate professor of political science at the University of Dayton.

"I've never seen anything like the Obama ground game," agreed Paul Beck, professor of political science at Ohio State University in Columbus. "It is light-years ahead of what the Democrats did four years ago."

Ohio has played host to the Clintons these past couple days while they hit the trail for Barack. Today, Senator Hillary Clinton held rallies in Youngstown and Delaware to address why Ohio needs a Democrat in office.

In Delaware, she was preceded by Delaware County Field Organizer Libby, who told the heart-wrenching story of her reason for change: her father, who worked hard, paid his taxes, and passed away in January of a heart attack, with no access to healthcare. She asked the crowd to think of their own reasons for change, whether it be a parent or a child, adding,

It's not enough to hope for change, or pray for change, or vote for change. You have to bring about change.

She encouraged everyone to volunteer, make calls, and go door to door to bring about change.

Another Delaware volunteer, Linda, was thrilled to introduce Hillary, her longtime personal heroine.

Hillary looked right at home in the Buckeye High School gym, and her speech proved her deep understanding of Ohio and Ohioans' needs.She recounted her last trip to Ohio earlier this year, as well as her impressions of the people of Ohio:

I was heartened and impressed, not just by the resilience of the people I met, or by how hard Ohioans work, but by how much Ohio deserved a better future.

Everyone knows that Ohio is a critical state for every presidential election. However, Hillary pointed out how this election is especially critical for Ohio. She noted that four of the top ten cities most affected by foreclosures are in Ohio. The crowd broke out in cheers and applause as she explained why she believes her fellow Democrats, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, are the answer to Ohio's troubles.

I have been fighting for the middle class for a long time...because I know that if we don't have a prosperous middle class, we don't have a prosperous America. That's who I'm fighting for today, that's who Barack and Joe are fighting for, and because that's who they're fighting for, I'm fighting for them.

In the course of the afternoon, Hillary also unveiled her idea for a new slogan, one she feels captures the feeling of our times. To the delight of the crowd, she shouted,

Jobs, Baby, Jobs!

While the enthusiasm and energy in the gym was infectious, Hillary warned that no one should take this election for granted, no matter what the polls say. She reiterated Libby's call for volunteers, also noting the importance that young Americans who are excited and involved for the first time encourage their friends to get out and vote.

This campaign depends on you. Not only your vote, but your canvassing, your phonebanking, your conversations with your friends, will determine the outcome of this election. As the Senator concluded,

On the morning of November 5th you're going to wake up and think one of two things...either four more years, or change is on the way!

2) The TWO STATE SOLUTION!!!!!!! (And awesome synopsis from Biden about how Bush policies have worsened the middle east situation and Israel's
own) and then Palin affirmed that!!!!!! Two of the very biggest flash points between that lunatic right fringe and everyone else!

And some of the "sound bites" that Joe Biden is using tonight is bringing me back to last year October/November/December when I was trying to pull together the news to match the candidates for this campaign -- and you know what? I'm thinking now that back then last year, I was getting Biden confused with McCain LOL!!!!

And Joe Biden nails the issue about Dick Cheney and the office of the Vice President....

And Sarah, darling, I'm proud of you, even though I still disagree with you on very fundamental things. I hope you keep up on the same track as I'm seeing tonight. This is not your election, but you can take this "lemon" of an opportunity that McCain has disengenuously offered you, and turn it into nice lemonade for all of the USA. I really do hope that
is where this point in your career takes you if that is where you want to go.Watching the rest...This one was even better than the debate between Obama and McCain!

The short rebuttal to Palin's obfuscation about Gen. McAllen saying
the surge wouldn't work in Afganistan was not to say "Yes he did."
The effective emotive rebuttal is " You can shape this whatever way
you want Governor, but how are you going to get around the fact that
he used the word "SURGE" in saying what wouldn't work. Only the
McCain Palin ticket could find wiggle room in something like that."

I know it's hard. I know it's like getting Wheel of Fortune alot
easier when your home than up there. But I'm still disappointed
again. I think these guys need one o' them transmitter-receiver
thingy's Bush wore under his suit in those debates.

ButI "betcha" one thing. This weekend Tina's going to be using the

Greensburg, PA: Speaking to a packed house in the Greensburg Salem High School gym Thursday, Democratic VP nominee Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) criticized the Bush Administration on its handling of U.S. military involvement in Iraq, shouting, “we will end this war.”

Introduced by NFL Hall of Famer and Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, and Norma Margonari, a local activist who comes from a large family of coal miners, Biden opened his remarks by thanking Pittsburgh for pitching in to help his family. He choked up and somberly spoke about how after his wife and daughter were killed in an automobile accident, Rocky Bleier, one of the Steelers, came to his sons’ hospital room to give them footballs to cheer them up, at the request of Dan Rooney’s dad.

Biden calmed fears when he said the Obama-Biden team would guarantee to keep Social Security intact. He answered questions on health care benefits and fixing the economy - but his most crowd-rousing comments were given about the Iraq War.

His statement, “Imagine a country where we only go to war when it is absolutely necessary” brought a big round of applause.

Biden continued, “and when we do….. we go with the support of the rest of the world.” More big applause. And then, ” Ladies and gentlemen, we will end this war.” Standing ovation.

Senator Biden’s got a personal interest in six-year long war, since his family learned their oldest son, Beau, currently Delaware’s Attorney General, and a captain in the National Guard, will be deployed to Iraq next month. But he’s been blasting the Bush Administration for several years for their lack of commitment to benefits for vets returning home, including making it extremely hard to be considered “eligible” for education and health benefits once their tours of duty are over.

Last year, the senator’s bill to provide funding for MRAPs, mine resistant ambush protected vehicles, paved the way for construction and distribution of these V-shaped hull tanks, directly leading to a dramatic drop in the deaths of US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan who were hit by roadside bombs. The bill was passed by a vote of 75-24. The one remaining vote was Sen. Hillary Clinton, who was absent in the Senate that day.

Pittsburgh has a higher than average number of residents in the U.S. military. Speaking to the veterans and their families in the crowd, Biden continued, “The only people sacrificing right now are those who have children or husbands or wives who are serving, and the families that are left behind. And we don’t mention it often enough, but we have thousands of people who have died. We have over 30,000 who have been wounded.”

He continued, “Ladies and gentlemen, we owe them. We owe them more than we can ever repay them.”

The senator stayed to answer questions (unlike his counterpart, Gov. Sarah Palin, so far…) and left to a standing ovation.

Rural Crew Brings Message of Change in the Heartland to the Farm Science Review, Delaware, and Lima

It was a packed day for the Rural crew, hauling from town after town in the far reaches of Ohio to spread Barack's agenda for the heartland. For anyone who looks at the breakdown of the issues, it's no surprise that Barack is far superior for matters that concern rural Ohioans, but it always helps to have a decked-out RV and some farm experts on hand to get the message across.

First up was the renowned Farm Science Review in London, Ohio, an annual trade show with a plethora of farm equipment and products on display, as well as delicious fresh dairy milkshakes and home-grown beef for sale. Rural Director Doug O'Brien talked shop with local farmers and radio hosts about rural issues and Barack's Plan for the Heartland.

Next were some brief stops in Delaware and Bellefountaine, but O'Brien and friends were greeted by ample enthusiasm and press coverage in Lima. In the picture below, O'Brien chats with locals about Barack's comprehensive plan to take rural America forward.

Lima is a town known for its conservative politics, but with this campaign reaching out to heartland voters like never before--be it through going door-to-door, or talking sound policy--Allen County just might turn blue this year. And having an office with awesome murals and carefully mapped out neighborhood team strategies helps too.

I don't know about you but I do not remember any other time where a news paper has ever sent out a DVD let alone one that his very biased and portrays Islam as an extremist religion!!!!!!!

I got my text message at 1:40 this morning -- Joe Biden (D-DE) will be our nation's 47th vice-president come January.

They're undoubtedly dancing in the streets of Wilmington, my hometown. One of my claims to fame in Arkansas is that I am one of the few people I know who has actually voted for Joe Biden in the past.

I'm proud to say that he was my senator for a couple of years.

I'm going to be working my Delaware connection all weekend here in Denver, looking for interviews with the First State's delegation.

Now if you'll excuse ME, I have to go collect my winnings in the Washington Center VP poll.

WASHINGTON — Senator Barack Obama has chosen Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware to be his running mate, turning to a leading authority on foreign policy and a longtime Washington hand to fill out the Democratic ticket, Mr. Obama announced in text and e-mail messages early Saturday.

Mr. Obama’s selection ended a two-month search that was conducted almost entirely in secret. It reflected a critical strategic choice by Mr. Obama: To go with a running mate who could reassure voters about gaps in his résumé, rather than to pick someone who could deliver a state or reinforce Mr. Obama’s message of change.

Mr. Biden is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and is familiar with foreign leaders and diplomats around the world. Although he initially voted to authorize the war in Iraq — Mr. Obama opposed it from the start — Mr. Biden became a persistent critic of President George W. Bush’s policies in Iraq.

At a local nonprofit fundraiser tonight in Wailea, Maui, I ran into a friend who has attended a number of Democratic National Conventions. My wife is a delegate and I'm an alternate.

In Denver, the Hawaii delegation has been assigned to the Marriott South Park Meadows hotel in Littleton, Colorado. One Hawaii delegate figured out based on the light rail schedule that we'll be about 50 minutes away from the Pepsi Center where the Convention evening activities will take place.

My friend the DNC veteran commented that Hawaii is always in the "boonies." We might be the birthplace of the party's nominee but in the hierarchy of things political, the islands' delegation doesn't command center stage. She wonders, however, about the placement of Arkansas in the same quarters -- I suppose Kremlinologists speculate that the Razorbacks got favorable housing during the Clinton years but now end up in the same place as four electoral vote Hawaii. Delaware, the home of another possible Vice-Presidential nominee, is the third state in our billet so I would rather think it's just the luck of the draw. But then my buddies think I'm an idealist. . . .

If Hillary Rodham Clinton or Joe Biden is picked, the opening reception Sunday night at South Park Meadows may be a little more memorable than expected. Both HRC and JB are expected to speak to the HI, AK and DE delegations at one of the breakfast meetings next week.

I would guess that Hawaii's delegation includes the largest proportion of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, including our Senior U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, who is heading up our delegation, junior U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka, U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, former Governor John Waihee, Honolulu mayor Mufi Hannemann, State Senator Colleen Hanabusa, State Senator Donna Mercado Kim, Edmond Arquero, Donna Hoshide, Al Lewis, State Party Vice Chair Kari Luna, Dayton Nakanelua, Jadine Nielsen, Stephanie Ohigashi, Caroline Sinaivaiana, and Jennifer Tsuji. That's sixteen of the twenty-nine delegates. In addition, alternates Melody Aduja, Lono Lyman and me are also AAPIs.

We leave for Denver on Saturday night on a direct flight from Kahului with a couple of others from Maui.

Delaware GOP's Ting Pays Price for Supporting Obama

The Delaware Republican Party's standard-bearer in the 2006 race for U.S. Senate has been expelled from his position in the state GOP.

His crime? Quietly supporting Democrat Barack Obama for president.

Ting said he has long had a number of reservations about Arizona Sen. McCain because of the candidate's age, 71. He also has concerns about McCain's temperament and past positions on illegal immigration and the Iraq war.
McCain was closely associated with an unsuccessful immigration reform effort that critics, like Ting, called an amnesty program.
Ting said that, like other Republicans, he has become convinced that the Iraq war is a mistake that is needlessly costing American lives.
Ting said his wife Helen was an enthusiastic Obama supporter, "so I took a closer look." And he said he made his first donation to Obama's campaign around the time of Obama's visit to Delaware.

Turning into my grandmother!

So I've been busy writing letters instead of writing my Thesis for grad school- whoops!

But its for a good cause, that's for sure!

My letter total so far is 4, which isn't bad... but I'm sure it will continue to grow as this race heats up. We always used to tease my grandmother for how she constantly writes letters to politicians and anyone else she has an issue with. If ever she told us of a story or incident that just wasn't justified, or handled poorly- we would say- "you Gonna write them a letter?" and of course she would.

So here I am, having just finished letter #4 as i slowly turn into my grandmother!

That's 3 letters to my Senator- Senator Joe Biden of Delaware. That's two emails and one paper letter. two before Feb 5th and one just today- Feb 13th- after Obama's potomac sweep.

The other Letter is to my local paper- the News Journal, which was published the weekend before Super Tuesday! Hooray! My Parents were actually proud, and for once the teasing about my Patriotism for Barack was replaced with pride. They sent a copy to my -letter-writing Grandmother!

So here's my most recent letter to Senator Biden

Dear Senator Biden, I wanted to share with you my experience canvassing in Delaware on Super Tuesday. I took the train down from Philadelphia and stayed with my parents for the week while I volunteered for the Obama Campaign. In my earlier letters to you- I explained how as a registered Republican I wanted to help Obama win Delaware since my vote could not.

I learned a lot that week about campaigning and about my fellow Delawareans. I met a lot of people who took vacation days from work to volunteer, others who not only volunteered but housed those from out of town. I met a man who flew in from the Netherlands, an 85 yr old White male who canvassed for 5 hrs straight, and many people who had been with the campaign during the past year. There were students from Sanford and little kids who wouldn't be able to vote for ten more years, but stopped by to help get out the vote! It was truly inspiring. I also got out of my comfort zone by knocking on doors and speaking with local Delaware residents whose neighborhoods I have never visited before. I kept thinking- today, on February 5th you have the easy choice to make your life, and your family's life so much better by voting for Barack Obama. I loved volunteering and will do so where I currently live in Philadelphia as the PA primary continues. Despite what the Media or others might say about this campaign, the results of last night's potomac primaries said it all. Obama is not just receiving the black vote, he is receiving all votes and winning the majority. He has united this country and he will be able to beat McCain in November. Once again, I am writing you to ask for your endorsement of this exciting Democratic Candidate for President. Your state has spoken and as its representative we would love if you would join us in helping elect Barack Obama for President of the United States! all the best,

Here is my letter to the Editor of the News Journal on Feb 1st

I'm a Republican who thinks the American people as well as the international community are speaking out for change and integrity in the White House. Even though Delaware is a small state with few delegates, it just takes one person to stand up and bring about change.

We can start by endorsing Obama on Feb. 5 and all the way to the White House in November. The alternative is the same dirty politics that has made us wary. I choose to back a candidate who is honest and trustworthy, who would not lie to the American people.

I cannot support a candidate such as Hillary Clinton, who has ties to big business, big oil and once sat on the board of Wal-Mart, a corporation that thrives on sweat shops. I cannot support an American monarchy of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton.

Obama has experience helping ordinary citizens, and is willing to bring his fresh approach to a tired political scene. Obama has the ability to invigorate citizens to participate in their democracy, as opposed to becoming apathetic in response to the Iraq war and politicians who do not listen.

We helped Barack Win in Delaware

Hello Eveyone,

If you know me, you know I'm not one to blog. But, I wanted to let eveyone know how we put our boots to the streets and helped Barack win Delaware. Several of us from the University City group drove to Clamont and were dispatched over several days from an Obama supporter's home to houses in Claymont, Edgemoor and Wilmington. The whole team, comprised of people from Philly, Phiily suburbs, Washington, DC, and Delaware, hit hundreds upon hundreds of doors and spoke to voters up to 7:45 PM Feb. 5th. Happily, Barack won every precinct we canvassed. My feet are a little sore, but it was worth it.

What's next??? We'll be working on getting Barack and his delegates on the ballot. We have to get voters to sign petitions. I'll let you know how that's going.

Yesterday morning I went to my polling place to vote for Barack Obama and was stunned upon arrival at the polling place. I saw somewhere around twenty to thirty Hillary Clinton signs, one John McCain sign, and not one single Barack Obama sign. I was deeply concerned about this and after voting, went home to tell my wife that I was going to the Dover campaign office to see if I could help. She asked if I intended to go to my Sociology class at 1pm, and I assured her that I did.

When I arrived at the office there were a handfull of supporters getting ready to go out to canvas the city for Obama, and with a certain degree of trepidation I decided to lend a hand. I was paired up with a gentleman from Washington, D.C. who had been in South Carolina and I learned that I was one of about four people who had come in from my town to help. I was immediately worried that the state was going to vote Hillary overwhelmingly.

This gentleman and I were given a tier one canvas of a local project, and I being from Annapolis originally joked that the people of Dover, De thought about this area like he and I would think of South East D.C.. We went door to door asking people if they had voted, if they intended to vote for Obama, if they needed a ride, etc. To me this was important in breaking a foolish class related ethnocintricity, as I had forgotten that no matter where you go, no matter how much someone makes, people are people. I was greeted, in most cases, with a handshake and a smile, and for the most part people were greatful for the reminder to vote. I felt like I had become a part of something greater than myself. After a few hours we went back to the office. I went home to get myself a couple of cigarettes and to talk to my wife who was watching our son. She asked me if I was going to Sociology prompting me to look at the clock. It was 12:15.

I thought about my attendance record in class, which is perfect, and how my professor would feel if I told him I skipped class to work for the Obama campaign. My wife looked at me and estimated that my pensive stare meant that I was unsure of myself, and told me that whatever I decided to do with the day was entirely up to me. I thought about the stack of clipboards sitting on the table in the barren office, and about how much work there still was to do, and how few there were to do it. I decided that if my Sociology professor (who I have the greatest respect for) was there he would have smacked me in the head for not doing something to help the cause I have grown to believe in. Class would have to wait. When I returned to the office my partner and I were sent to a poll for a little while, after which we returned to the office.

At the office we were asked to go canvas in the roughest part of town, so we did, only this time, I had no trepidation.

I would like to thank all of the people who came to Delaware to help, I learned a lot yesterday.

Yes We Have!

Everything that Senator Obama believes in and stands for was achieved today in the great State of Delaware.

I left Pennsylvania and drove to Wilmington, Delaware where I met more than five hundred fellow Obama volunteers – a diverse crowd of every race, age, gender and background. We came together because we believe in Senator Obama’s vision; we believe in each other.

I paired up with a friend and she and I walked around the streets of Wilmington knocking on every door of a registered Democrat. One by one, we were greeted with excitement as we explained that we were from the Obama campaign. When we learned that a person had already voted earlier that day, we would ask “Did you vote for Barack Obama?,” the answer was almost always “You know I did!”

The children returning from school would spot our Obama stickers and run to us with excitement as they explained that they were voting for Obama (perhaps we can revise the voting age to include elementary students)! We handed the children of all ages Obama stickers and they wore them proudly.

One woman stopped us and explained that it wasn’t that she didn’t like Clinton. She explained, “It’s just time for a change.”

I’m excited tonight knowing that Senator Obama won Delaware because of inspiring all of us to believe in ourselves. I’m optimistic that Senator Obama will win his campaign for the presidency. Yet, I know that he and we have already won.

Senator Obama and we can take great pride in knowing that his dream is now our dream and that our dream is now the dream of the children.

Yes we can! Yes we have!

I know I woke up yesterday excited about the rally in California even though I'm in DC (I watched it on c-span 3 times!) and then logged on to the major news networks and to tv to see Barack making up considerable distance in the polls. I was overjoyed! Then when Maria Shriver walked out, there are no words. There were tears but no words. I started calling everyone to make sure they knew what was happening. It was another one of those moments in this campaign that just brought it home.

So as we are all looking forward to Tuesday and we are anxious, excited, scared and every other emotion in between, I want us all to stay Fired Up! Make the calls, talk to our friends, family and neighbors and don't ever give up hope. A quick story to share. I was volunteering in South Carolina. I have a bum ankle so I volunteered to drive people to the polls and volunteers to canvas. It was about 45 minutes before the polls were going to close and I had three college girls about 18 or 19 years old who were out knocking on doors. On their list of houses was one marked vacant. They decided to knock anyway and at least leave a door hanger about Barack.

I know Super Tuesday is on our minds right now. It is indeed on mine.

But let us think about AFTER. Yes, even after the Washington State Caucus that many of us are volunteering for.

Let us endeavour to getting Senator Barack Obama to Oregon, before May.

We will need a LARGE space for the event — one that will fit 20,000-plus people, because I know he'll draw that many. He pulled in 14,000 PEOPLE in firetruck-red Idaho, in the midst of a winter storm. They were expecting 8800.

He pulled in 20,000 in Delaware, and that is how I know we'll get at least that many to turn out here.

What sayest ye? Let us do this thing.

I'm excited. This is really great to get behind some one who I actually trust and believe in.

I really enjoyed the email that was sent out today. Its nice to know that I was not the only one who donated the other night after the NH caucus. Its very easy to watch the news, to pay attention to the media hype and feel that there is a great challenge ahead. Don't get me wrong, there is still work to be done and through continued commitment- progress will be made.

So, what I've done so far- being a student, who is currently working through her last canned goods in the cabinet, I could only personally donate so much. So I have begun to send out emails to others who might be interested in donating to Obama's campaign.

I just finished an email to my Senator, Senator Biden- asking him to endorse Obama. If I knew that I would start this blog I would have copied the email so whoever looks at this little blog would have been able to read it. Oh well, I do have to say that it was a tactful email- writing to a former Democratic presidential candidate has the potential to be awkward, but I think I did a good job.

I've done little things too, joined a Barack facebook group, posted similar items to my profile, as well as asked my friends on the network to consider donating to Obama.

I continue to watch video clips online, and participate in polls. If anyone else has read the tipping point, they would know that little things can have a rippling effect and cause things to "tip". So even taking a Poll on Ellen.com can send a message- even if its- That Ellen watchers support Barack, yeah it might be a specific dynamic, perhaps primarily women, but hey, that's what the reporters were saying after NH- that Hillary has a better corner on the women vote. Yeah, maybe in NH...

WHAT I Plan to do, Or WOULD Like To DO:

Since I live in Philadelphia, but am registered in Delaware, I am looking into some Philadelphia events. Currently there aren't any actually in the city that are listed- so that only says to me that that needs to change. So tomorrow I will look into it- find a venue that a group of supporters could inhabit to watch an upcoming debate, or to have a brainstorming- fundraising event. We'll see, the possibilities are endless!

And that's what I love about this campaign, the grass roots focus- you have to give responsibility to the American people in order to gain their trust, interest and attention! because lord knows that has not happened for a long time, if anything this current administration has left the American people out of the loop- with restricted information, and an unwillingness to answer questions. Its a disgrace.

Barack Obama sent out an e-mail to supporters on Tuesday announcing plans for a big rally in New York's Washington Square Park on Sept. 27. The invitation was evidence of a campaign planning for a potentially extended battle against Hillary Clinton.

The idea of a protracted contest runs contrary to widespread assumptions about how the 2008 Democratic race may play out. But some analysts, who have studied the new calendar, the rules for allocating convention delegates and the financial resources of the leading candidates, believe that a lengthy contest extending into the megaprimary day of Feb. 5 and beyond may be just as likely.

It's been a crazy month for me. I've spent countless all nighters trying to improve my grassroots Barack Obama website that I hope will make a difference in the younger voters out there. There are still a few glitches to fix, but for the most part, the new site is online and ready to help promote Obama as best as it can.

Probably the biggest difference is that there is now a page for every US city and state where people can leave comments and quickly interact. I chose the simple comment system because I know that many younger voters won't take the time to sign up for Barackobama.com but still want their voices to be heard, so this is their chance to be heard.

The most time consuming part of the whole website redesign was the creation and upload of over 30,000 images people can get on t-shirts. Like I mentioned earlier, there are a few problems with a few cities and states, but basically, EVERY CITY has its own Barack Obama t-shirt.

Let me say that again... EVERY US CITY has it's own t-shirt design!

I'm an artist and web designer, and this is how I'm supporting Obama. It doesn't matter what you're good at.. there's definitely something you can do to help him get noticed.

I will gladly bring a table chairs and bumper stickers and buttons and flyers and a giant 4ft by 8ft banner (with a stand).

I just need you to find the locations and get the rights for me to bring my stuff and set it up.

You don't even have to be there. However, if you can that would be great. Try to find locations where many people are there. If i drive a long distance to say lehigh or lancaster counties please try to make it an all day event to justify the drive for me from delaware county pa.

Extinguishing Apathy: Delaware students plan trip to New Hampshire

The school the Princeton Review ranked # 4 in the nation for political apathy is rallying behind US Senator Barack Obama by planning a major effort to bring as many University of Delaware students to the New Hampshire Primary as possible (UD has the entire month of January off school)

This interest in politics is unprecedented for UD. The Princeton Review has ranked it among the most apathetic colleges in the nation for the past ten years.

Obama message of a new kind of politics is shifting the tide.

With very little promoting and no visibility, the campaign has already signed up nearly 20 student volunteers for the last three weeks before the primary date. Our goal is to bring 30 students, however we anticipate to far exceed expectations.

We are working closely with the national leadership to plan the logistics of our trip, here are some of the basics:
* The campaign is providing free housing to all students who are interested in going
* We are on our own for transportation. If anyone has any ideas of cheap ways of getting a mass number of students to New Hampshire from Philadelphia, they'd be greatly appreciated
* We will leave around Jan 4 and stay 3 weeks until the 26th (after the primary)
Delaware SFBO will be issuing press releases in September and putting up posters to advertise to UD students around the same time. If you're a parent of a UD student, encourage them to join up!
