Larimer County honored Public Health 'Hero'

I had to repost the story below. In my mind Health Care takes many forms. I don't want us to be machines working towards only Obama's idea of Health Care. When this is all done we (the people) will still need to help each other live healthier and happier. This is one way someone in Larimer county has done that...

The original article posted below can be found at (http://www.coloradoan.com/article/20090609/UPDATES01/90609017/Harbison+honored+as+public-health+hero)

The Larimer County Board of Health has named Lupe Harbison, health care program coordinator for the Women's Resource Center in Fort Collins, as the recipient of this year's Joseph Jabaily Public Health Hero Award.

Harbison has worked nine years at the resource center. Her work includes helping low-income resi-dents to receive breast- and reproductive-health services, such as mammograms.

She also provides outreach to the Latino community for various health programs, according to the board of health.

The annual "hero" award is given in memory of Dr. Joseph Jabaily, a Loveland neurologist and public-health advocate who died in a charity bicycle race in 2004.

The award will be presented Thursday at the health board's meeting at 7 pm, at the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment, 1525 Blue Spruce Drive, in Fort Collins.

WHO IS THAT GUY BARACK OBAMA? HE IS US.

..... Contact: http://Alex.Karoub@gmail.com
(orig. posted 11/7/08)
We have made historic headway by together pointing our nation in the right directions. After decades, we have America focused on the issues of fundamental importance. Now, each of us acting in concert can together move our country to lead the world to the fruitfulness of moral goodness. I have no doubts about my abilities and the abilities of fellow Americans to work smart and hard to achieve these goals.

Barack Obama has the visions, leadership, and integrity for us to correct and redirect our country to once again lead the world for the fruitions of good. Let's closely listen, learn, and move forward based on that which we know deep inside is good and which we can validate with our hearts.

I hope that those who had but a few reasons to support Obama, look further into the other issues more deeply. I found the more I explored, studied, and listened to Obama the more I found us in agreement. The couple of issues that I did not have depth of knowledge of, quickly became obvious in need. This was unusual for me since I have always refused to be any kind of a follower, and still am not. I find Obama to be a deep thinker who is articulate and inspirational; and, of most fundamental importance, Obama makes excellent moral sense.

Hopefully, our country has learned lessons from the past of mistakenly following leadership blindly, as was done with Nixon and Bush. There are leaders who are simply in it for themselves and will cater to individuals or groups in order to grab for their own benefit. Corrupt and bad leaders hide at all levels. This is especially true in city government as well as county and state government. The corrupt deals of politicians need to be exposed, and those responsible need to be weeded out in the coming local elections. Others need to be investigated by law enforcement and be prosecuted for illegal dealings; for deals they often make for their hidden personal agendas. Let’s look at the bad experiences of the past as bitter medicines, let’s eliminate the need for such bad medicine in the future. Let us use what we know is good to go forward.

I believe we have chosen wisely, not by greed and not by misguided retaliatory anger. I believe this time our country has chosen with open eyes, with each of us listening and examining our choice of leadership closely, driven and validated by our hearts.

I hope we can continue to make our efforts even more inclusive (in many more ways than I touch on here). Far right republicans will be stubborn to change, but we will need to include them to change if we are to succeed. Sure a few more will leave our country, but that is not the American way. No, we really don't need their false fronts of power, money, insider knowledge, or other trappings that they have taught many to 'respect?'. Let's recruit as many as we can, that's the American way, evolving and changing together as one nation. Try to be understanding as we move forward; by better understanding each as individuals and people with various desires and needs we will find ways to reach out with friendship and have them join our causes of good.

Be on the lookout, and root out bad leadership in government and business. Do not be intimidated by those who use the false fronts of power and give a false sense of security in order to lead. Be extra leery of those who say or imply ‘Trust me’; those who give a sense that they somehow omnipotently know better. No longer will Americans be dazzled by phony displays of brilliance or baffled by baloney. There are government aristocrats and business leaders who still believe in the old adage of: “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle em with bullshit”. We can embrace complexity by demanding true, fundamental, and understandable explanations. We can root out falsehoods by not accepting double speak. We as Americans know how to grow ourselves by first believing in ourselves. Don’t be a follower. Don’t be a follower of followers.

However, when we find leaders who are good; a leader that thinks, speaks, and acts from their heart; one that is honest, has integrity, and leads by sincere examples; then we need to in a big way, join them, support them, and promote their causes of good. From much research, investigation, and scrutiny, I believe Barack Obama is such a person. I hope we search for and find many more who are similar, who we can add to service at all levels of government. We need to add/replace leaders in business with ones that have honesty, integrity, and show quality in leadership. We need more people in leadership roles who are moral, like Barack Obama.

Remember, we are not fighting a battle, we are the artisans and sculptors of the future for ourselves and generations to come. Rarely do societies have opportunities to make such dramatic moves forward as we now have in this opportunity of today. Take pride and practice in being inclusive as we stride forward. In moving forward, create opportunity not only for yourself, but also for all. Hope is a wonderful thing to behold; but without opportunity, hope can become but a dream never achievable. We can, will, and must, create opportunity.

In the coming year I hope that we do not lose our spiritedness, but instead continue to build and make headway. I hope we all continue our campaign for change in government and business. We will succeed in moving forward once again, it will take much effort and good oversight on the part of each of us. We will make great strides in the months and years ahead in order to achieve the fruitions of good. Let's keep our enthusiasm progressing through these coming toughest of times. Let us use the light of goodness and love to motivate us with historic momentum.

I have chosen Barack Obama because he best represents my deepest beliefs in America. Please take time to read the issues that Barack Obama has published on this website. Also, give your attention to see how he leads us to move our nation forward in the time ahead. Most importantly, be part of America's great future, participate in the greatness that together we will make. Participate!

We will each and all flourish, if we think, speak, and act, by using the love in our hearts.

Your reply is welcome.
Goodbye Reagan Democrats, and Good Riddance to the Pollster, Stanley Greenberg

“Goodbye Reagan Democrats” is the title of a rather vitriolic column by pollster Stanley Greenberg in the Nov. 11th New York Times. Brian Dickerson has a good column in the Nov. 12th Free Press, responding to it. Here are some excerpts from Greenberg‘s column.
I’m finished with the Reagan Democrats of Macomb County in suburban Detroit after making a career of spotlighting their middle-class anger and frustrations about race and Democratic politicians. …

For more than 20 years, the non-college-educated white voters in Macomb County have been considered a “national political barometer.” … After Ronald Reagan won the county by a 2-to-1 margin in 1984, … I conducted focus groups that “found that these working-class whites interpreted Democratic calls for economic fairness as code for transfer payments to African-Americans.” So what do we think when Barack Obama, an African-American Democrat, wins Macomb County by eight points? …

Before the Democratic convention, barely 40 percent of Macomb County voters were “comfortable” with the idea of Mr. Obama as president, far below the number who were comfortable with a nameless Democrat. But on Election Day, nearly 60 percent said they were “comfortable” with Mr. Obama. About the same number said Mr. Obama “shares your values” and “has what it takes to be president.”

Given Macomb’s history, this story helps illustrate America’s evolving relationship with race. … But focusing on the ways that Macomb County has become normal and uninteresting misses the extraordinary changes taking place next door in Oakland County — a place that played a bigger role in Mr. Obama’s success and perhaps in an emerging national Democratic ascendancy.

While Macomb County is home to the white middle class that America’s auto industry made possible, Oakland County is home to the affluent, business-oriented suburbanites of Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills, some of the richest townships in America. Just a quarter of Macomb County residents have college degrees, but more than 40 percent do in Oakland. …

Oakland County has formed part of the Republican heartland in Michigan and the country. … Over the past two decades, Oakland County began to change, as an influx of teachers, lawyers and high-tech professionals began to outnumber the county’s business owners and managers. Macomb has been slow to welcome racial diversity, but almost a quarter of Oakland’s residents are members of various racial minorities.

These changes have produced a more tolerant and culturally liberal population, uncomfortable with today’s Republican Party. … On Tuesday, Oakland County voters gave Mr. Obama a 57 percent to 42 percent victory over John McCain. … That helped form one of the most important new national changes in the electorate: Mr. Obama built up striking dominance in the country’s growing, more diverse and well-educated suburbs.

So, good riddance, my Macomb barometer. Four years from now, I trust we will see the candidates rush from their conventions to Oakland County, to see the new America.

(end of excerpts)

Here is the letter I sent to the NY Times.

America - Together (post election)

..... Contact: http://Alex.Karoub@gmail.com

WHO IS THAT GUY BARACK OBAMA? HE IS US.

The Moment of Change

It was a beautiful autumn day along the Mississippi River. My wife and I were on our way to Pike County to help Nick Wertsch, Obama's man on the ground, canvass Louisiana, Missouri. This small town happens to be the birth place of Mark Twain, though his family would move farther north while he was still young to his legendary home at Hannibal, Missouri. Louisiana is smaller than Hannibal, but in some ways much more authentic as former steamboat towns go. There is a substantial black population in the area that has been there since before the Civil War.While we were out talking to the folks of the town, I met a 73 year old woman named Jesse, a woman of color, though by her account of it she was light-skinned on account of "having white in my family". I am a burly guy, I own a building supply business in Eureka, Missouri outside of St. Louis. I am told that I look like a redneck and people are always suprised to learn that I have supported Barack Obama months and months before the primaries started. Jesse was kind and spoke freely of the years of prejudice and persecution she had endured. She talked about how she got along with her white neighbors but it had not always been easy. Then she looked at me and said, "I never thought I would live to see the day that an army of white people would be pushing for a black man to be president." "This changes everything," she said. "Even if he don't win, this changes everything." We talked about the civil rights movement in 1964 and how black folks lead the way, but that thousands of whites hade joined in to change the country -- a change that could not have happened without everyone working together. I pointed out that this was different. "This time", I said, "Barack Obama is running as both black and white, for both black and white." "This changes, everything", I said. Jess knodded and replied, "it sure does". She asked me why I was out walking up and down the streets for the Obama campaign. "Because I believe", I said. "I believe that we can be one family of people." "I believe we can care about each other." I told her that I had to lay off my first worker just two days before. "I came up here 100 miles from my home to ask you to help me avoid any more lay-offs." She smiled. She offered to volunteer at the Obama headquarters. A block away, I met a tall white man with clear blue eyes and white hair. We talked about the condition of the nation. He told me that he was a Viet Nam veteran and that did not feel that the Republicans had ever kept their word to veterans. He said quite candidly, "I generally don't like black people, but I am voting for one in November." I was a bit surprised to hear this. In rural Missouri, racial prejudice is common, but this man was on the verge of a profound change. "He is smarter and will do a good job" he said. This is a man at the moment of change. He went on to ask for a yard sign and before I left he said, "I feel bad for you". "Why's that?" I asked. "Because you are about to go through some pretty hard times. We are heading into some real problems. I am not going to be around to see that, but you are." I asked him why he didn't think he was going be around. "Bone cancer", he said, "there's no curing it and I stopped taking chemo." "But after this year, I will have seen it all." For myself, I have decided that the labels black and white, concoctions of the 1960s, are not only inacurate, they are divisive. I am not white. Copy paper is white. Jesse is not black, nor is Barack Obama. An eight ball is black. We are all brown. Infinite shades of glorious brown. Brown is perfect because we can all be it. Together. Meet your neighbors. Love your neighbors. Let them work out for themselves what it will take for them to be a part of the new world that is coming. Ask them to vote.

Hello!

I am brand new to this and very relieved to find a place that I can feel hope that where I am in life may be understood! I am a mother of six kids. My oldest two have pretty much left me for higher ground and my youngest four have been in fostercare for 15 months here in Kenosha county based on false accusations that I beat them. The system is so quick to judge those with mental health issues that even the police officers and investigators will call you a liar instead of allowing you to clarify their inaccurate assumptions. I chose to go on disability so could be stable and attentive to my children and the county is one day's hearings away from giving them to a drug addicted father who just got out of jail after many failed attemts to be a father rather than return them to a mother on disability. I have not given up, but a healthy person would crack under the pressure! I have to be in denial to survive some days! I came to Wisconsin because there was so little help in Illinois, so I am more than please to hear Senator Obama set the record straight about what this country needs! Don't let our children slip through the cracks Senator Obama!! I believe with all my heart that you are not about greed! Give us a voice!

Election Fraud... the McCain/Palin way

An interesting note I thought I'd pen today on the issue of subtle (or more barefaced in some cases) election fraud that the Republicans are undertaking in the guise of "getting out the vote". I'd heard of many instances, through left-wing media sources, of people being mailed Absentee Ballot Application forms by the McCain campaign with deliberately incorrect information on them (incorrect city clerk addresses, etc.) but I'd not seen any hard evidence... until now. My mother was mailed one of these forms, attached to a screed about how "Democrats are voting to raise your taxes next year". I gave it the once over. The address listed on the form is:

COUNTY AUDITOR - 300 S 6TH ST - MINNEAPOLIS MN 55487-0999

Now the address itself IS the address for the Hennepin County Government Center... so it looks just fine... EXCEPT the county's own Absentee Voting information page states:

You may also download and print the Absentee Voter Application and mail or FAX it to your city clerk [author's emphasis]. The "Absentee Ballot Application" and "Cities in Hennepin County" links can be found along the right margin of this page.

So the County wants these applications submitted to the City! So this isn't the right address after all... and while the County Auditor will doubtless try to forward these on to the correct city... it adds another layer of abstraction to the process... and that assumes that this would go directly to the County Auditor's Office to begin with. According to the Hennepin County Government website, the Auditor's Office that handles Elections is as follows:
Elections Division
Michelle DesJardin, Manager

Hennepin County Elections
A-600 Government Center
300 S. 6th Street
Minneapolis, MN 55487-0060

The Elections Division provides voter registration and election administration services for Federal, state and local elections. For additional information, please visit Voting & Elections.

So, same building... different Suite and ZIP. So, you fill out the form and mail it... then it needs to be forwarded within Hennepin County to get it to someone who's job it might be to address it, and then it needs to be forwarded on to the appropriate City Clerk for actual processing. Oh, and that link for "Voting & Elections"? That's the one that says to send you application to the city clerk ;-)

Very slick, I just hope they're counting on this to improve the Republican voter turnout ;-)

Andy

County Republicans for Obama Yard Signs

I could not find a decent quality Republicans for Obama yard sign, so I made my own. I decided to put my county on it, especially since it's the most Republican county in Indiana. After ordering my own, I figured I'd make it available to anyone and raise some money for the campaign.

Here's a Hamilton County Republicans for Obama yard sign:

http://www.cafepress.com/wwobamad.279087309

I created one for Marion County (state doesn't matter):

http://www.cafepress.com/wwobamad.279101456

If anyone is interested in a design with a different county, let me know at chuck@whatwouldobamado.info what county and I'll create it and put it up there, and send you a link. In fact, I'll keep the following page updated with any new counties:

http://www.whatwouldobamado.info/cafepress.html

I'll be adding to this store over the next few days. Net proceeds will go to the Obama campaign.

http://www.cafepress.com/wwobamad

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thoughts for the Week

We have ended another week, and have many more to go until Election Day. I want to continue encouraging you to donate to Obama for President and also encourage you to buy his products and display them proudly. You never know how many people will decide to vote for him by knowing that you and others support him so proudly--they will feel that they are not alone.

Earlier in the week I was having a conversation with a male co-worker who has decided (and told me so) that he will vote for John McCain because Hillary did not win the nomination. Will he vote for him if Hillary is on the ticket as VP? I don't know. But, we argued about South Carolina. I told him that SC was going to become a swing state and vote democrat this year, in favor of Barack Obama. The primary turnout showed support for him in all but 2 counties--yes we can! To make a long story short, he told me that SC would vote republican because our state is uneducated, largely majority white, and only cares about three things--religion, guns, and abortion. I say we should prove him wrong. If we all educate others about Obama and spread how we feel, we can really have a major effect on others. So let's do as I encouraged you above--donate and display.

On another note, please visit and encourage others to visit www.fightthesmears.com to learn the truth about our future President of America. Have a good weekend.

Worked the Hamilton County Polls

My wife, Sharon, and I, worked at a Westfield poll today - me as the Democratic judge, and Sharon as the Democratic clerk. It is an experience I recommend to everyone, as you see the process from the inside. In our precinct, Obama got twice as many votes as Hillary!! We did great work in Hamilton County!!! This is even with a significant Operation Chaos showing. We had quite a few Republicans ask for Democratic Ballots. No big deal, since we like crossovers for sincere reasons, but several of these people were "wink wink nudge nudge" so I believe they were voting Hillary to screw with the Democratic primary.A gentleman showed up, in a VERY nice suit, and said he was the "<strike>RNC</strike> GOP Chairman." He asked how many Democrats were voting versus Republicans. We told him there were significantly more Democrats than Republicans. He grinned hugely and said, "Operation Chaos," and raised his eyebrows a few times, apparently showing approval for the illegal, treasonous Limbaugh plan to sabotage the Democratic primary. For the past several weeks the media has said this exact scenario - a huge win for Obama in North Carolina, and a minor win for Hillary in Indiana, means Hillary loses any further justification for remaining in the running. So, Yes We Did!

Up To Speed, The Trail So Far

"Today we begin in earnest the work of making sure that the world we leave our children is just a little bit better than the one we inhabit today." - Barack Obama

I think this quote, more than anything else sums up my daily life. As a new father, that one simple sentence means more to me than a non-parent can possibly imagine. My name is Brandon Safford, and before Barack Obama ran for president, I was one of the many disenfranchised voters who felt their vote would never again make a difference. That we would forever see the days where partisan divisiveness, petty bickering, mud-slinging campaigning, and choosing the lesser of two evils would be not only the norm, but the eventual downfall of our country.

I am a loyal patriot and natural born citizen of the United States of America, and thus, feel fully justified in saying I am utterly disgusted with my government at the moment. It is only because of my love for my country that I still have enough faith left in the system to hope that, one day, it will change for the better. Hope that in time we will repair the damage done to our international relations, our economy, our Constitution, and our own sense of national pride. The damage that Bush has wreaked upon my nation will take decades to repair and pay for, and the lives lost in his illegal war against a country that never invaded us can never be regained. He has traded the blood of my countrymen for the oil of an oppressed nation. He has metaphorically redacted our Constitution with a record-number of signing statements, and sent us down a path to becoming the sort of horrific 1984ish Tyranny that his own party 20 years ago raised me to believe stood for everything that was evil in the world: sanctioned torture of ones own citizens, big brother spying on its own populace, and gross violations of international and domestic law.

It is times like this when I thank God that I was born in a nation where our forefathers forsaw a time when government would so overstep its bounds, and so often, that it would be necessary to replace them in a bloodless coup every 2-6 years. Few people appreciate this fact. Few understand that an election is more than just casting a ballot in one's spare time for whoever a blind-party nominee is. Indeed, it is nothing less than non-violent revolution by the people, for the people, and a way for our country to maintain stability and rule of law, free of bloodshed. I shudder to think of what life would be like otherwise, and firmly believe that, given half of a chance, Bush would remove even this power from us. If another Republican is elected into office, it will demonstrate to America and the World that my citizens and I not only am comfortable with the policies of the Bush Regime, but that we endorse them for another four years. For that reason, I have given the Democratic Party my full support this election. My ballot is my pitchfork, and Obama is my torch. The castle we storm is nothing less than the White House itself.

One might even ask why I chose Senator Obama over Senator Clinton. To that I say that I expect of Hillary Clinton what I would expect from all the other political candidates before her: mild competance, four years of the balance being shifted into party control, some special interest pork, and a lot of muck-raking politics. To date, she has demonstrated nothing more than this to me.

Obama, on the other hand, has shown himself to be the Gentleman Politician that I only read about in storybooks as a child. He is the sort of character that I always imagined the founding fathers to be (before I actually started reading more in-depth history books). He is at once charismatic, stately, eloquent, refined, intelligent, and the sort of man that an entire nation would stand behind to support, and in front of to defend. He is a natural born leader, and of every candidate I have ever known, stands the greatest chance of going down in history as the greatest president since Washington.

It was because of these feelings that I not only voted for Obama in the primaries, but when my professor divulged to me about the Texas Two-Step process, I proceeded to bring my wife and infant son to the Caucus on March 4th, and vote for him again, contributing to his overall delegate win, and then staying afterward to become a delegate for Precinct 3037, District 12. 20 years from now, when my son casts his first Presidential Ballot, he will be able to say he was there, the day it all changed.

On Saturday, March 29th, we awoke before dawn to get dressed and meet with the rest of our Precinct Delegates before the County Convention. There, we discussed who amongst us we would send to state. The choice came down to myself and a woman named Sharon, who unfortunately had to leave to see her husband in the hospital, but not before she spent over five hours working the registration booth at the convention itself. I believe she needs recognition for this incredible work on her part. The registration process at the country convention was a nightmare, with 3000 people waiting in line for hours on end, and 87 precincts contested by the Hillary camp, on technicalities that were thankfully eventually settled by a team of lawyers by 3pm.

To say there were a lot of people there would be an understatement. To those familiar with the gargantuan Gaylord resort in Grapevine, TX, they filled TWO BALLROOMS from wall to wall. Whereas four years ago, the democratic post-caucus convention managed to hold 7 Districts worth of people in one high school gymnasium, our space at the Gaylord barely managed to accomodate ONE district. Literally thousands of people stuck around, and it wasn't until near 5pm that we finally got down to the voting process of who would represent each precinct at the State Senatorial Convention.

I must applaud my local precinct, we turned out in force, and admirably so. 19 delegates showed, 10 for Hillary, 9 for Obama, and we still had a few alternates on the side. Despite strong support on both sides, no one so much as raised their voice at each other, and the Convention Caucus was very quickly, politely, and efficiently settled. Texas Precincts get 1 state delegate for every 12, rounded down, and 1 alternate. It is settled by simple majority vote, and only one vote to determine both. The Hillary Camp won the delegate slot with 10 votes for Terri Anderson. The Obama Camp won the alternate slot with the remaining 9 votes. I was chosen as that alternate.

And now we wait... so far as I am presently aware, the State Convention will be held June 5-7 in Austin, TX. Both my wife and I also applied for the positions of Delegate-At-Large, on the basis that a secure-seat to represent Obama would be better than an alternate seat. However, even if I am an alternate, if Terri should have to abandon the Convention, then at least one more delegate vote will flip from Hillary to Obama. I expect this will be the case in many precincts, actually. So, despite the news stories and the count by the Associated Press, the reality is that the 30/37 split of Texas State Delegates to the DNC in August is mere speculation. Many closely contested precincts may find their representation flipped because their alternate was for the opposing candidate.

It is my sincerest hope to go to the Democratic National Convention. If I end up a Delegate at Large, or I am upgraded from Alternate to Delegate at the State Convention, then I will be one step closer to seeing that dream become a reality. And to my other fellow Texans fighting the good fight in this long, arduous, and extremely confusing process, good luck, and God Bless.
Fantastic Saturday for Indiana

Crowds of Obama volunteers were plentiful around Indiana on Saturday for the openings of the state HQs at 10AM. Attending the opening of the Indy HQ was a wonderful experience. Everyone huddled on the lawn at Fulton Street, had a certain spirit about them. You could really feel the excitement for Indiana as we entered the doors. Lines stretched throughout the building. Some folks were buying t-shirts, others were checking out the new diggs, and visiting with familiar faces. Everyone was smiling and boisterous. It was a diverse group representing every demographic.

We have become a sort of family. As each week passes, we meet in coffee houses, libraries, restaurants, and our homes with other supporters and volunteers. The Indiana Obama community is growing and as each of us meets one another, we become friends. We are friends who have found a reason to hope, to volunteer, and to vote. Most of us have never felt this type of interest for a presidential election before. We have never felt this urgency, to help register voters, to get to the polls, and to fix our own communities. There are many different stories why an individual may support Obama, but they all have the same truth. He is a candidate who can come in fresh to this job, look at what is wrong, and do his best to correct our problems. He won't have to answer to old Washington or big donors. He will instead answer to us, each of us. Our lives will change. From the moment he sits in the Oval office, this country will finally be on course. There will be no more misdirection. It will take time to accomplish the things that each of us need, but he is the only one to do it. Each of us believe in him and each of us has put ourselves in the action.

Members of the official campaign spoke a few words of encouragement and instruction for volunteers. The packets that were assembled for volunteers, with the highlighted streets, voter registrations and Obama campaign flyers disappeared in a hurry. Everyone paired up and headed to their chosen areas with a passion.

I left the Indy Headquarters and headed to my SCI group in Morgan County. Nine volunteers helped canvass neighborhoods with me. Hours passed before I realized I hadn't eaten that day or taken a break. Though I'd had plenty of coffee in the morning. Oops. Canvassing is always a thrill and I tend to get carried away. No matter who you meet, everyone in Indiana is looking forward to the primary. The occasional supporter for the other guy is usually very cordial and appreciative of the effort to register voters, no matter who they might choose on election day.

Finally, at 7:30 PM, I returned to the old IPS school building that houses the HQ. Outside, a dedicated campaign member was busy entering gathered supporter information into a computer. Inside volunteers and workers were all about the building, sorting stacks of registration forms and various volunteer collected papers. It appeared to be a successful day for Indy. As I handed SCI's stack of forms into the collection, I thought, how fantastic. This group has done so much to build a terrific grassroots effort and it truly is getting the job done. Thank you to every volunteer out there in Indiana who spent their weekend working to make Sen. Obama our nominee. We will continue this effort for the next week, please volunteer for another event. Whether you find one new voter or twenty, in this election every one counts. For the first time, EVERYONE counts.

AP has Obama new Iowa totals WRONG

AP states that it's 23 Obama, 14 Clinton and 7 Edwards with 1 to be decided. THEY ARE WRONG!

I've taken the IDP totals from each County and applied them to their Congressional Districts and the math shows that it should be:

25 Obama

14 Clinton

6 Edwards ....

reaction to advocate article: obama dominating LGBT endorsements

there is not doubt that obama offers the honest, CONSISTENT, more progressive record of leadership as well as policy toward LGBT issues. in fact, i have three blogs saying so!

what i doubt is no targeted activity or reinforcement of prior messaging to capture LGBT votes in ohio, considering the dense population in franklin county. clinton, technically weaker on the issues, acted quickly in a targeted message which is one of the stark differences in support of obama. (point #2 of my last blog)

late january, clinton distributed an open letter and it was quickly disseminated among individual voters via social networks and email distribution lists.

lead like sheep into the slaughter house. in turn, i published my rebuttal in blog form on february 6, and then scripted an abridged version which i sent to my personal contacts and OHIO HQ.

however, i did not see an open letter from OBAMA FOR AMERICA until just before the ohio/texas primaries. yes, obama has given many speeches and made better proposals... but this time, somehow, clinton was beating obama via peer contact and new media. how can this be... or more importantly, why are lesbians and homos quick to fall in line under clinton? it's a misitake by gays, and i am only human to speculate that a significant percentage of lesbians are also feminists and that a significant percentage of homos are associate with a mother-figure.

holy freudian slip-up batman! but, before anyone sends me hate mail, let it be known i've heard many rebuttals in favor of clinton resorting to her gender and the idea of wanting a woman in office... all logic be damned.

fortunately, obama won franklin county... home of columbus (dense LGBT population). yet, i am not convinced he won the gay vote. obama faired well in each metropolitan area, winning three of ohio's largest counties such as franklin.

furthermore, i'm pretty disappointed in the official obama LGBT myspace. there's been no activity since before super tuesday. no one has approved comments or circulated the open letter among the thousands of people listed with the site. tragic oversight. that's how clinton set off a domino effect among gay-friendly ears.

i get it. bigger fish to fry? but alas, perhaps this advocate article signifies better targeting in the future.

~ j

Just finished a great bike ride with Bob and Jen Letscher and am now getting ready to go to SFO to get on my flight to DFW. Just received this from the an Obama supporter in Texas. Really unfortunate news in my mind.
Election 2008Clinton aides threatened lawsuit over Texas caucuses, officials sayBy Jay Root | McClatchy Newspapers

Posted on Thursday, February 28, 2008

AUSTIN — The Texas Democratic Party warned Thursday that election night caucuses scheduled for next Tuesday could be delayed or disrupted after aides to Hillary Clinton threatened to sue over the party's complicated delegate selection process.

In a letter sent out late Thursday to both the Clinton and Barack Obama campaigns, Texas Democratic Party lawyer Chad Dunn warned a lawsuit could ruin the Democrats' effort to re-energize voters just as they are turning out in record numbers.

Spokesmen for both campaigns said there were no plans to sue ahead of the March 4 election.

"It has been brought to my attention that one or both of your campaigns may already be planning or intending to pursue litigation against the Texas Democratic Party,'' Dunn wrote in the letter, obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "Such action could prove to be a tragedy for a reinvigorated Democratic process.''

Democratic sources said both campaigns have made it clear that they might consider legal options over the complicated delegate selection process, which includes both a popular vote and evening caucuses. But the sources made it clear that the Clinton campaign in particular had warned of an impending lawsuit.

"Both campaigns have made it clear that they would go there if they had to, but I think the imminent threat is coming from one campaign,'' said one top Democratic official, referring to the Clinton campaign. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity.

Another Democratic official who was privvy to the discussions confirmed that Clinton representatives made veiled threats in a telephone call this week.

"Officials from Sen. Clinton's campaign at several times throughout the call raised the specter of 'challenging the process,' the official said. "The call consisted of representatives from both campaigns and the Democratic Party.''

The source, who asked not to identified by name because he did not have authorization to speak about the matter, said Clinton 's political director, Guy Cecil, had forcefully raised the possibility of a courtroom battle.

But Adrienne Elrod, Clinton's top Texas spokeswoman, said campaign and party officials had merely discussed election night procedures and that the campaign was merely seeking a written agreement in advance. She could not elaborate on the details of the agreement the Clinton campaign is seeking.

"It is our campaign's standard operating procedure that we need to see what we are agreeing to in writing before we agree to it,'' Elrod said. "No legal action is being taken. We have no reason to take any legal action.''

Obama spokesman Josh Earnest said the Obama campaign had no plans to sue.

"We're confident that by working closely with the Texas Democratic Party and the Clinton campaign we'll have a caucus that Texans can be proud of — because every eligible voter will be allowed to participate and have their vote counted in a timely manner," Earnest said.

The letter to the two campaigns did not specify what procedures or rules might trigger a lawsuit. But one party official said the campaigns were most concerned about the caucus process, or, as the party refers to it, the "precinct conventions.''

Texas has 228 delegates, the biggest single cache remaining. But only 126 delegates are doled out based on the selection voters make at the ballot box. Another 67 delegates — more than in many states — are to be apportioned based on the number of people who participate in the caucuses that begin in over 8,000 precincts once the polls close at 7 p.m. (The remaining 35 are so-called "superdelegates'' free to support whomever they choose).

Clinton campaign aides have argued that caucuses favor Obama, whose campaign organization has turned out overwhelming numbers at caucuses in other states.

Democrats have described the enthusiasm in Texas, as evidenced by the record turnout among early voters in the most populous counties, as a sign that the party is undergoing a revival after years of decline under virtually unchallenged Republican rule.

"If it is true that litigation is imminent between one or both of your campaigns and the (Democratic Party), such action coule prove to be a tragedy for a reinvigorated democratic process that is involving a record number of participants here in Texas and across the nation,'' Dunn, the state party lawyer, wrote"

Bob says "Waaaaaah, Hillary."

Anyhow., I am heading off so the next blog will be from DFW. I stay overnight to catch the early plane to Corpus Christi where I will be joining in the

Canvass for Change (Official Event)

Time: Saturday, March 1 at 9:30 AM - 0 days

Location: 413 Waco Street

            413 Waco Street

            Corpus Christi, TX 78401

Thanks for all of your support. We are going to BARACK texas!!!

Karen

Take It Easy (Obama Wins Washoe!)

Some Obama supporters question fairness of county convention.

I say "chill."

Close-quarters combat with the Hillary camp can be stressful stuff. I attended the Washoe County Democratic Convention Saturday and I can attest to a thick sense of hostility floating around the Reno Convention Center Ballroom. A line was painted (literally) down the middle of the floor, separating the Obama and Clinton factions definitively.

1,666 delegates decided which candidate was the best representative voice for Northern Nevada. That voice belonged to Barack Obama. In the first alignment of 1,666 delegates, there were 77 votes for John Edwards, 668 votes for Hillary Clinton and 915 votes for Barack Obama with six undecided voters. After the first alignment, John Edwards was declared a nonviable candidate and Edwards voters were required to realign with either Clinton or Obama. After the second alignment, there were 1,655 delegate votes with 11 refusing to support one of the two viable candidates. Of the 1,655 votes, 683 went to Clinton with 15 Edwards votes and 972 went to Obama with an additional 57 votes coming from the Edwards camp.

I’m hearing stories of Clinton supporters behaving unfairly to some Obama supporters at Saturday’s event. All I can say is, “what did you expect?” Following 11 major losses and the announcement of an horrendous campaign debt reaching the millions, Clinton supporters are justifiably bitter. One thing I believe--despite any failings of bureaucracy or treachery from bad-egg supporters--is the event went alright. It wasn’t perfect, but it was okay. It could have always ran smoother, but that’s hindsight. A handful of people ran a convention full of 1,000-plus divided Democrats and did so rather fairly. There will always be complaints, but one or two angry people is better than an event cancelation -- like what happened in Clark county.

I’ll admit that I saw some things I didn’t agree with, but I think that, as an Obama supporter, I was already on the defensive. In January my caucus was led by a self-proclaimed, “recovering drug addict” Clinton supporter who nearly had a “panic attack” when some Obama supporters disagreed with her declaration to close doors at 11:30 a.m. (instead of noon). Apparently, this kind of thing happened all over Nevada -- prompting legal action from both camps and the writing of letters to Congressional Candidate Jill Derby regarding voter disenfranchisement (in thousands of precincts). I think these experiences made a lot of Obama supporters (including myself) ultra-sensitive to the issue of fairness.

When I entered the convention, I analyzed the floor like a hawk. I was prepared for anything. Questions like, “why is the Clinton half of the room closer to the main entrance?,” “why are the Hillary posters bigger than the Obama posters?” and “why are Hillary people signing in delegates?” ran through my mind. I questioned the fairness of the arrangement of alternate and guest seating. I took my seat in the bleachers and waited for the worst.

Nothing much happened.

There was a heated debate over what would be done with any remaining John Edwards delegate votes if there weren’t enough Edwards supporters in attendance. Delegates debated for what seemed like an hour until we came to the decision that remaining Edwards delegate votes would be split proportionately in accordance with Nevada caucus results. Well, there were enough Edwards supporters, so the debate was completely moot.

Sometime later, alternates got to enter the delegate floor. I was one of over one-hundred people that changed their name tags from “Alternate” to “Delegate” in support of Obama. When I went to cast my vote, I didn’t know where to turn in my candidate preference card. A Hillary supporter guided me in the wrong direction and mumbled something like, “I dunno I think it’s somewhere over there.”

I learn fast.

I found the nearest Obama supporter who pointed me in the right direction and even helped me with my little, bead-necklace thing (which wasn’t necessary but still very nice of her to do).

I guess what I’m getting at is that we need to stick together and not focus on the negativity of the Clinton camp and their steadily declining bid for the presidency. We should be focusing on the positivity of our own campaign and the fact that we worked together to make Washoe County, Obama Country. We should focus on the fact that, despite the long day, we got the job done with minimal pain.

Variation in Demographics across SC Irrelevant, We won Everywhere!!

As the Clintons and some media observers have been busy qualifying Barack Obama's landslide victory in South Carolina, I've been thinking about the demographics of SC. Yes, a third of the state's population, give or take, is African American. BUT that percentage is not distributed evenly across the state. Almost all of the voters in some counties, especially in the SE corner of the state, are African American, whereas other counties have much lower African American populations.

If the South Carolina vote was merely the result of race politics, Obama would have won where black people are concentrated and not in the whiter counties. HE WON 44 of 46 counties. Obama prevailed in ALL except two counties (John Edwards took Oconee, where he grew up, and Hillary Clinton took Horry, where Myrtle Beach is located). Obama did not prevail only in places like Orangeburg and Kingstree and Jasper County.

He took Greenville and Spartanburg. He took Lexington County, one of the whitest and most republican counties in the state. He took all but one of the counties in the upstate, which are demographially more similar to North Carolina that the lowcountry of South Carolina. The NY Times has a map showing the margin of victory and prevailiong candidate by county. In Nevada and NH, Obama took substantial geographical areas of the state. The maps for Iowa, NH, and NV show that Obama and Clinton both took a good number of counties. The map for SC, with its great expanse of green (Obama's color on the map) reveals what a landslide this was for Obama. (As a side note, the Republican map looks almost evenly divided between McCain and Huckabee - the democrats were more unified than the republicans were last Saturday.)

I wish the media would focus on the votes and not the exit polls. All of this talk about the black vote is based on polls. Remember the polls in NH? How about the exit polls in the 2000 presidential election? Why are the exit polls in SC going unscrutinized?

Further, I am sick and tired of Bill Clinton's attempts to make this election all about race. For him to compare Obama's win to Jesse Jackson's wins in the 80s is nonsense. For one, Jesse Jackson was a native son, like John Edwards. Jesse Jackson took only 10% of the white vote, whereas Obama took almost a quarter of the white vote. Funny that Bill didn't mention that he won the SC democratic primary. That seems like a better comparison to me.

Do you remember when all of the talk was about whether African Americans would even support Obama? It wasn't that long ago. Some people said it took Iowa to convince African American voters in SC that Obama could win white votes. The results show me that he can and did win those white votes. Instead of looking at SC as a whole, and dismissing the results, because other states don't share it's demographic profile, I think we should look at the counties. I think we would find that some of the counties, especially in the upstate, are reasonably similar to to the February 5 states.

The fact that Obama won SC overwhelmingly, in all areas of the state, tells me all I need to know about his success from here on out. Remember, also, that he won in IOWA, a place with very few minorities. There is room in this tent for everyone, regardless of race, who is more concerned about the issues than partisan politics.

A Model for Organization

I recommend we use the categories outlined in directory of Michigan groups. Remember this process is organic. We do not wish to impose structure, but in a limited way. We adapt our organization based on what IS. The most active group is designated. If not the owner/admin, there will be at least one person within that active group that can make a physical commitment to be at a meeting.
