Bruce and Barack Share the Stage in Cleveland

Bruce Springsteen and Barack Obama held a rally in Cleveland tonight. Bruce played, Barack spoke, both their families were there, and so were 80,000 other people. As Barack got to the conclusion of his speech--which was simultaneously a closing argument for change, and a call to push ahead for the final two days--it began to rain.

Words (and even pictures, really) do not do it justice. But you can get an idea of the moment by watching this video, which captures the same speech, as well as the sense of urgency and historic weight that was in the air:

More than anything, Barack's message was about the country coming together to solve its problems. It was about how America belongs to everyone--no one is more or less American than anyone else. Fittingly, just a few minutes before, Bruce had played the Woodie Guthrie classic "This Land is Your Land." You can take a listen to the performance right here:

Between songs, Bruce told the crowd what Barack Obama, and this moment in our history as a country, means to him and his music. Although long, it is one of the best and most powerful articulations of the importance of this moment as you will ever hear.

I've spent 35 years writing about America and its people--what does it mean to be an American, what's our duties and our responsibilities, what are our reasonable expectations when we live in a free society. I really never saw myself as partisan but more as an advocate for a set of ideas: economic and social justice, America as a positive influence around the world, truth, transparency, and integrity in government, the right of every American to have a job, a living wage, to be educated in a decent school, and to a life filled with the dignity of work, promise and the sancitity of home. These are the things that make a life. These are the things that build and define a society. I think that these are the things we think of on the deepest level when we think about our freedoms. But today those freedoms have been damaged and curtailed by 8 years of a thoughtless, reckless, and morally adrift administration. But we're at the crossroads today.
I've spent most of my life as a musician measuring the distance in my music between the American Dream and the American reality. I look around today and for many Americans who are losing their jobs or their homes or seeing their retirement funds disappear or their health care, or have been abandoned in their inner cities, the distance between that dream and that reality has grown greater and more painful than ever. I believe that Senator Obama has taken the measure of that distance in his own life and in his own work. And I believe that he understands in his heart the cost of that distance in blood and in suffering in the lives of everyday Americans. And I believe as President he'll work to bring that promise back to life and into the lives of so many of our fellow Americans who have justifiably lost faith in its meaning.
Now, in my job I travel around the world and I occasionally play to big stadiums or crowds like this, just like Senator Obama does. And I continue to find out that where ever I go, America remains a repository for people's hopes, their desires; it remains a house of dreams. And a thousand George Bushes and a thousand Dick Cheneys will never be able to tear that house down. That's something that only we can do, and we're not going to let that happen. This administration will be leaving office--that's the good news. The bad news is they're going to be dumping in our laps the national tragedies of Katrina, Iraq, and our financial crisis. Our house of dreams has been abused, it's been looted, and it's been left in a terrible state of disrepair. It needs defending against those who would sell it down the river for power, for influence, or a quick buck. It needs strong arms, strong hearts, strong minds. We need someone with Senator Obama's understanding, his temperateness, his deliberativeness, his maturity, his pragmatism, his toughness, and his faith.
But most of all it needs us. It needs you and it needs me, and he's gonna need us. 'Cause all that a nation has that keeps it from coming apart is the social contract between us, between its citizens. And whatever grace God has decided to impart to us, it resides in us, it resides in our connection with one another. In honoring the life and the hopes and the dreams of the man or the woman up the street or across town--that's where we make our small claim upon heaven.
Now in recent years, that social contract's been shredded. Look around today and you can see it shredding before our eyes. But tonight and today we are at the crossroads. We are at the crossroads, and it's been a long long long time coming.
I'm honored to be here on the same stage as Senator Obama. From the beginning, there's been something in Senator Obama that's called upon our better angels, and i suspect it's because he's had a life where he's had to so often call upon his better angels. And we're going to need all the angels we can get on the hard road ahead. So Senator Obama, help us rebuild our house, big enough for the dreams from all our citizens. 'Cause how well we accomplish this task will tell us just what it does mean to be an American in the new century, what the stakes are, and what it means to live in a free society.
So I don't know about you, but I know I want my country back, I want my dream back, I want my America back. Now is the time to stand with Barack Obama, and Joe Biden, roll up our sleeves, and come on up for the rising.

The Excitement Builds...

It has been almost two months since my grandmother started her blog at 85andchange.com. Working on this project with her has been so exciting. She never ceases to amaze me with her energy and tenacity. She is a most amazing woman, and it means so much to me to have had this experience. I wish every grandchild could have a bonding experience like this with their grandparents. We have so much to learn from our elders.

Over the last several weeks have traveled to see Joe Bide, Bill Clinton, and Hillary Clinton. Each speaker has been an inspiration and motivational. But today the excitement hits an all time high. Today we get to go downtown and see Barack, Michelle, and Bruce Springsteen! What an appropriate and fitting end of the campaign. We are both so excited, we can't contain ourselves! The only excitement that can compare to it will come on Tuesday evening when it becomes clear that the nation has chosen Barack Obama to be the next president of the United States!

Cleveland, Akron, New Philadelphia and Middletown Newspapers Endorse Barack!

In what looks like it's becoming a trend, four major Ohio newspapers recently endorsed Barack for President. The Cleveland Plain-Dealer's backing is a boost for the campaign given its huge market, and the Akron Beacon-Journal's support reflects an understanding that Barack will help large sized towns like Akron. But the New Philadelphia Times-Reporter and Middletown/Hamilton Journal's words are especially remarkable, given that they come from typically Republican-voting areas. But in this election, with a candidate whose policies support rural and small town areas, the map is definitely shifting.

It seems people from all over the state are hungry for change. Here is what the Plain-Dealer had to say:

After eight years of George W. Bush, America needs a change in direction and a change in tone.

It needs a president who understands that, yes, the world can be dangerous, but it is also complex. That the United States cannot defend its freedom by abandoning its principles. That it cannot ignore its allies one day and demand their help the next.

It needs a president who knows that optimism, not fear, defines America. That tax cuts and deregulation alone are not an economic strategy. That Washington cannot sit idle when a great city is devastated by nature or when millions of hardworking Americans are devastated by losing their homes, their jobs, their health care.
It needs a president who will listen and learn, and not confuse loyalty with competence. Who will ask Americans to sacrifice in the service of their country, not their party or self-interest. Who will be the leader Bush promised eight years ago -- a unifier, not a divider.

Barack Obama can be that leader.

Barack Obama calls for change. So does John McCain. Each has spent the past year or more attempting to define his version.
So, yes, change, by all means, and the candidate who has articulated more clearly and persuasively the course the country should follow is Barack Obama... How solid his campaign has been, the organization, grit and, most important, the direction and themes.
Where does Obama want to take the country? He wants to enhance the investment in education and research, essential to competitiveness in the knowledge economy. If his pledge to reduce the typical premium for health insurance by $2,500 a year is mostly guesswork, his overall plan reflects the pragmatism required to repair a costly and inefficient system of health care. He seeks to add fairness to the tax code, responding to trends in income, wealthier households doing far better, too many Americans experiencing flat paychecks in this decade.

On these and other matters, including energy, the aim is to mobilize better the country's talent and capital, grasping the indispensable role of government, reinforced by the turmoil on Wall Street in recent weeks. In a related way, such a focus on what is most important will drive his selection of federal judges and Supreme Court justices.

The Times-Reporter believes Democrat Barack Obama is the better candidate to lead the country out of these trying economic times and today gives its endorsement to him over opponent Republican John McCain.
In the past, The Times-Reporter has shied from endorsing Democratic presidential candidates primarily because of their promises of additional entitlement programs that grow government rather than shrink it. But the last eight years have blurred the picture with Republicans spending as wildly as their counterparts across the aisle.
Then there's a host of countries to worry about, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Georgia and others. And still on the table will be other key issues – the environment, energy, education, infrastructure and health care. And have we mentioned that our image abroad needs a little polishing?

We believe Barack Obama is the better of the two candidates and the one who can lead us through one of the most difficult economic times since the Great Depression. We urge T-R readers to cast their ballots for him and his running mate, Joe Biden, the senior U.S. senator from Delaware.

The election is Nov. 4, although Ohio voters can cast "no fault" absentee ballots now or vote at their respective boards of elections.

The overarching question surrounding the 2008 presidential election is whether this nation can lift itself from the financial and political morass that threatens its prosperity, its security and its very future. To be successful, this country needs a strong leader who can pave a new course that improves the lives of Americans and others around the globe.
Electing Obama next month does declare to the entire world that a new, positive and optimistic course has been set for America, with attainable and desirable goals that will lift up the 305 million people who call this country home.
Obama, D-Ill., and his opponent, U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., have squared off in three national televised debates and have survived a demanding primary season to get to this point. Even though he lacks the experience of McCain, we believe Obama has demonstrated himself to be the more knowledgeable, serious, stable and articulate candidate — and he has the most comprehensive agenda for getting America back on its feet.
"No Child Left Behind," launched by President Bush here in Butler County, had the right goals, according to Obama, but lacked adequate funding and wasn't implemented correctly. Obama plans to reform NCLB, as well as attack America's high dropout rate and soaring college costs, and emphasize teacher recruitment and retention. "Now is the time to finally meet our moral obligation to provide every child a world-class education, because it will take nothing less to compete in the global economy," Obama said in his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in August.

Granny Gobama has decided that she wants to see Joe Biden speak in Warren, OH tomorrow. We're hopeful that the Obama campaign will make another stop in Cuyahoga County at some point, but with Warren being only an hours drive, we thought it might be worth the trip! With the final debate coming up this week, we look forward to hearing from our future Vice President!!

It's Official... She's Staying Through the Election!

I'm happy to report that Granny Gobama has decided to stay in Ohio through the election. She already sent her request to California for her absentee ballot and has changed her flight home. The project that we launched together - 85andchange.com - has been more popular than we could have imagined and after all our effort, we could not imagine being apart on Election Day. So my grandmother will be moving over to my house to stay for a few weeks.

Together we will focus more energy on her blog, and try to get her out to even more events. This will also allow her to have further face-to-face conversations with some of her older friends here in Ohio and tell them again why she is supporting Barack Obama. Maybe... just maybe... she'll be able to convince another voter, as she was able to convince her Florida voting Son!

Protecting American Voting Rights!

In America, your right to vote makes you an American. In America, your right to vote makes you a tax-payer. In AMerica, your right to vote gets you one step closer at being a citizen. All around the country, voter registration drives, have re-boasted the vibe of voting. Organizations like A.C.O.R.N. which means: Association of Community Organization for Reform Now, have been working too hard in order to get people registered. Yet, the House Republican Base, who's seats are endangered see this organization or any organization like A.C.O.R.N. as a problem. This problem is the same problem that helps people get registered to vote: more like Rock the Vote. In fact both of these two organizations fuel off the same information and ideas set down by the federal government.

What I can't understand is why two programs that do idnentical things, in terms of functioning and voter's rights -- are at the opposite side of the House/ Republican's table: here's an idea! A.C.O.R.N. brings in 90% of their voter drives to the Democratic Party, While Rock the vote brings in 45% of their drives to the Democratic Party. Rock the Vote turns in 55% for the Republican Party, and A.C.O.R.N. turns in 10% to the Republican party -- so this means the Republicans can't inspire their base so they want to pick which program works and what doesn't to favor them. Fact are: 55% of newly registered voters are Democrat, with 25% are independent -- with 20% Republican. Now they want to take away your rights.

The Repubs base wants to say this: These people are criminals, these people are illegally here; these people are not competent enough to vote. Listen, they ARE WRONG: During the primaries, you voted on the voter act initiative; which protects your rights unless you are mentally challenged -- and even then you still have the right to vote with assistance.
Here's you voting rights for 11/4/2008

1: To be registered by 10/4

2: U.S. Citizen that has a residence in the states county for more than 30 days on Election Day: Including a P.O. Box from the stats post office.

3: 18 years of age before Election Day.

4: If you are not in prison or on parole for a felony convicition on or two weeks before election day.

5: College students have a right to use the dormitory as a primary residence -- home or school: and they can oly vote ONCE.

6: Only a person with a misdemeanor conviction can still vote, and they have the right to vote from the jails: MISDEANORS ONLY.

7: A felony conviction can only register: after they have been cleared from: parole, probation, and their current charge.

8: A homeless person can vote if were they usually stay: they can use that place like: a park, a shelter, or a citizen sibling in good standing -- in which they reside in the county of the state they are registering in to vote.

These are the rights you have to vote and these are the rights that A.C.O.R.N. and Rock the Vote is using. She has made two posts already, is working on her third, and is toying around with the idea of making a video that we can post to her blog and to You Tube. People seem to have gravitated to her site to find out more about this 85 year old blogging grandmother and they seem encouraged by her message of change. Her site has already receieved almost 500 hits!! UNBELIEVABLE!! So... the point is... the message is spreading. And even an old lady who isn't very mobile has found a way to reach out and pass on her hopes and dreams and a positive message of change to hundreds of people who may not have otherwise taken the time to listen to someone her age. A huge part of what can bring Barack and Joe to the White House this year is a staggering number of new voters. But these voters cannot let their voice be heard unless they GET REGISTERED. Well, at 10:00pm this evening, we called it a night. After attending a meeting of the Democratic Party of the Chagrin Valley, my grandmother decided to grab some dinner and call it a night. Pretty good for the first day of volunteering! Her take away from this day seemed to be that there are a lot of democrats talking to each other about the campaign and how much they love Obama, or how frightening they find Palin to be, or out of touch McCain is, BUT there doesn't seem to be any action on coming up with creative solutions on how to get the vote out. She feels that there just isn't enough attention being paid to helping the seniors make sure they vote, or to even bring undecided seniors to the table for discussions. I'm not sure she has the answer....yet.... but I wouldn't put it past her to do her best to figure something out!

And she's off!

Well... after a somewhat productive meeting at Headquarters, my Grandmother is off and running. This evening I take her to her first meeting at an Assisted Living Community. She has already contacted a Cleveland Heights woman who has provided her with Voter Registration forms and they plan on coordinating further to get out to places in the Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights and University Heights areas. It will be interesting to see how her plan to get out there to help evolves and develops!

She has decided to see if she can be of use for this campaign by reaching out to the senior demographic. It is people like her that inspire this whole campaign. I am so proud of her and ispired by her!

It was a packed day for the Obamas and the Bidens yesterday in Ohio, as the two families criss-crossed the state and made nothing short of four stops for a variety of events.

The climax of the day was no doubt the Rally in Dublin, at Dublin Coffman High School, where 19,000 people packed both sides of the football stadium, not to mention the sprawl of the sidelines, to hear Barack and Joe. The two Senators were introduced by Governor Ted Strickland, Senator Sherrod Brown, and Ohio hero and former Senator John Glenn. Pictures from the event, and the rest of the day, are posted below:

Even before Barack took the stage and shouted "O-H!" (to the roaring reply of "I-O"), the energy in the open air stadium was off the charts. Joe Biden aptly explained what's behind all the excitement in his introduction of Barack:

"I watched a guy tap into, just by his very being and his ideas, tap into the age-old American belief that many have forgotten. And that is, you don't have to accept a situation you cannot bear; you can change it."

The rally was preceded by a stop in tiny Marengo, in Morrow County, where Barack and Joe stopped at a sweet corn stand.

Before that, in Cleveland, the families attended the memorial service of Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who died on August 20th. Senator Clinton and President Clinton were also present, and though the service stretched to four hours, Barack stayed for the duration, and made remarks as well.

The duo kicked off the morning with some breakfast at the Yankee Kitchen Diner in Boardman, near Youngstown. The stop was caught on video, which you can check out here:

Today, Barack and Joe were in Lima and then Toledo, for a discussion on the economy at the Toledo-Lucas Library. More on those events coming soon...

A Change is Coming

We've been doing great things in Ohio, particularly Cleveland, OH. Buckeyes for Change (an Ohio Obama support group) and my company, JR Productions, through a collaborative effort, created a song that we feel captures the spirit of the Obama campaign. This song, "A Change is Coming," was written to inspire everyday people to participate in the campaign with the hope to make a difference, make a change. Howard Dean and Kal Penn Hit the Road in Ohio to Register for Change!

Tomorrow in Columbus and Cleveland, Democratic National Committee Chairman and former Governor of Vermont Howard Dean will hit the streets with actor/producer Kal Penn ("Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle," the TV show "House") as part of their Register for Change voter registration drive. Their drive (in a bus) takes them across the heartland, from Indiana to Ohio to Pennsylvania, getting the word out about the importance of voter participation.

Today, Dean pumped up new registrants in Cincinnati by reminding them that Kerry lost Ohio in 2004 by a what averages of 11 votes per precinct. He also underscored a survey taken in 2005 that found that of all voter outreach methods used in an election, canvassing, and specifically neighbors talking to neighbors had the most positive effect, with 12% impacted. Fortunately, the newest and most innovative program of the campaign that allows you to do that: talk to neighbors in your neighborhood about Barack.

With neighbors talking and new voters registered, Ohio can't help but go blue come November!

Live: From the Warped Tour in Cleveland!

The same unbeatable energy of young people that fuels Barack's movement is here in Cleveland today, with all efforts devoted to rocking out at the Warped Tour.

Throngs of people hover from stage to stage, catching bands like the Street Dogs, MC Chris, and the Bouncing Souls. It couldn't possibly be hotter outside, but that didn't get anyone down--there was even a Slip-n-Slide and a free water spray, in addition to all the tents promoting bands, t-shirts, websites, and causes.

The cause that's catching everyone's attention is of course that of the Obama campaign. Besides manning their own tent, volunteers and organizers are out among the crowd in full force, casting a wide net for any and all unregistered voters. Clipboard in hand, they've registered over 180 voters already, and Obama Warped Tour coordinator Julie says they've snagged more than 2000 total over the course of the tour. Obama Organizing Fellow Farooq registers one such voter below.

But supporters are not solely among the audience. Numerous bands and band members have expressed enthusiasm, to say the least, about Obama's candidacy, many willing to let their voices be heard in the name of Barack. For example, the Bouncing Souls, shown below, made it known that they are hard-core Obama fans.

After giving a shout-out on camera to the voters of Ohio, the Souls hit the main stage here and rocked Cleveland hard. With such dedicated volunteers and organizers in place, and a healthy dose of voter registration forms filled out, the campaign can expect to rock Ohio just as hard come November.

In news this week: Stephanie Tubbs Jones, an Ohio Congresswoman representing the 11th district (aka the downtown and eastern Cleveland area), is hosting a rally on behalf of our campaign next week.

The news is especially notable because Ms. Tubbs Jones was an avid Hillary supporter during the primary. She joins the legion of Hillary supporters joining forces with Obama supporters to help chart a new course in this election.

The public event, and Ms. Tubbs Jones' support, will surely help boost our candidate's already stupendous following in the greater Cleveland area.

Here in Ohio, everyone from community leaders to everyday folks to big name representatives like Ms. Tubbs Jones are making a stand for change.

Buckeyes for Change Make Headlines

UPDATE: Buckeyes for Change, one of the largest prObama groups in Ohio, and which was featured in a previous blog post, got some serious exposure on Cleveland local news the other night. The news clip, found here, covered the Unite for Change event the Buckeyes held in a park downtown, and the choreographed dance they performed there. In the clip, producer James Reid talks about plans to distribute a video of the dance on the internet, to raise money and support for our campaign for change. You can catch a brief glimpse at the dance by checking out the clip (which also features a quick shot of our very own Ohio for Obama blog and website!).

Congratulations to Lisa, Zakiyyah, and all the Buckeyes for Change, for their newfound fame!

But Lisa and friends weren't the only Obama fans who got some mention in the news. Volunteers from Lima held a 4th of July event in Faurot Park (one of hundreds across the state), and the story got picked up by WLIO. They registered voters, recruited more volunteers, and dished out some Obama gear.

Looks like some good deeds do go noticed!

Jammin for Change: Cleveland Gets Funky

Gayle had been a dedicated Obama supporter ever since she saw him speak in Cleveland a week or so before the primary. After that, she joined MyBarackObama.com, cruising the site for events once a week, then once a day--looking for Obama events and groups in her area. It was at one of these events that she met Walt.

"We were listening to this song, 'She's a Bad Mama Jamma,' when Walt told me that he knew the guy who wrote it [Carl Carlton]."

Walt, as it turns out, was Walter Johnson, a veteran of the R&B music business of over 30 years. A prolific writer, he not only knew Carl Carlton but managed him, and played with the classic soul band The Delfonics. Walt had plans for his own Obama group, to promote a series of events across Ohio and a kind of concert telethon on behalf of Obama. "My idea is to do a PBS kind of fundraiser for Obama, utilizing all the musicians in the area who have supported him," says Walt.

And so, with Walt, the group "Bad Mama Jammas and Friends for Obama" was born. The description on MyBarackObama.com reads: "Motivated, active Obama supporters who love 70's music and want to 'party with a purpose.'"

Walt and Gayle plan on using the group to promote different fundraisers across Ohio--cookouts, concerts, meet-n-greets, as well as the aforementioned large-scale show that will combine old footage and live performers... some screening from other cities. It's possible that Walt was inspired for such a multimedia approach by the event that the Bad Mama Jammas attended in Cleveland on Saturday. "Buckeyes for Change," led by Lisa Davis and Zakiyyah Saleem, hosted a Unite for Change party in the park at Lakeshore Avenue and 9th Street, and performed a specially choreographed line dance, in hopes of distributing the video of their moves and their message on YouTube.

The event was designed to unite a bunch of smaller, online groups like Walt and Gayle's. It was followed later in the day by another very well-attended event (complete with music and finger food) a couple blocks away at the FOP Union Hall.

Cleveland truly united for change on Saturday. But with creative ideas like Walt's, and large, relentlessly active umbrella groups like Buckeyes for Change, this is just the tip of the spear for the Obama movement in Ohio.

Reality Check

Believe it or not (given the title), this post isn't about the March 4 primaries.

I went to Cleveland this past weekend to help canvas neighborhoods. I went through two neighborhoods in two days. Both bore the signs of a city hurting - vacant houses, many recent arrivals and departures (our voter list was almost useless), people struggling to make ends meet.

There was a superficial "this is why we're doing this" feeling, but it didn't feel deeply authentic. What does feel authentic: I really, truly believe that an integral approach is the only way forward. The republican solution has been reliance on the free market, or, in extreme form, denial that there's a problem at all (because if the people were really willing to work and apply themselves, they'd be doing better). The democratic solution has been a focus on external forces - emphasis on education and government assistance, or, in extreme form, welfare.

Problem is, both those solutions are woefully partial; but both contain truths that are part of a better approach. Long-term, an integral approach is our only chance.

If You Want People to Vote in Cleveland DON'T BLOCK THE STREETS!

I went to vote yesterday in Cleveland, and of course, I was super AMPED to finally voice my support for Obama.

What I wasn't prepared for, however, was the crazy ride down Chester and Euclid after seeing humongous ROAD CLOSED signs blocking both entrances to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

Imagine this: I'm driving with my two sisters in tow, trying to get at a parking space for the Cuyahoga County Board Of Elections, and I see two looming signs:

On one side, the roads simply said: ROADS CLOSED. On the other side it said: ROADS CLOSED: Local Traffic Only. Signs lined the other side of Euclid Avenue, where the street to BOE is actually on.

But what was "Local traffic" supposed to mean? This is Cleveland, where those silly street cameras take pictures of your car and charge you 100 dollars for going 5 miles over the set speed limit. This is the city where a great many police officers are corrupt and will pull you over for minor offenses and charge you major fees, even if you've made a mistake.

If you don't follow the rules in Cleveland, you get fined. Massively. So, understandably, people were stopped at the road, saw the sign, then drove off, obviously confused as to what to do.

The officer in the car just sat inside, looking as cars stopped, waited, then sped away.

I drove around for a couple minutes, trying to find a spot somewhere close, to no avail. All the streets were filled with cars and people and dogs and snowy, nasty mud...but there was not a poll worker or police officer in sight to direct us would-be voters to the right path to the Board Of Elections.

My sister, I'll call her Eagle-Eye, spotted up ahead that a car drove around the cop car, the sign and rushed down the street.

I decided to follow suit.

We made it through the street, and parked in the University parking lost. We hopped out and took the short walk to the BOE.

Inside, a security guard was talking with a police officer.

"There are not really that many people here," he said softly, "I think it's because you guys have the streets blocked off."

My sisters and I looked at eachother. The police officer grumbled a reply that I couldn't hear. He saw us staring, and pointed us to the elevators.

Upstairs, I went to get my provisional ballot and I asked the poll worker at the desk why the roads were blocked off in that manner.

She only stared at me, shocked, "What? They ARE?"

I nodded.

She left me for a moment, then came back with my sign-up sheet. "Fill out the form, please."

And no mention was made of the semi-blocked off streets.

I don't know why the streets were blocked off in that manner. I just don't understand why there were no visible signs or people directing us where to go, where to park or what route we should take to get to the Board of Elections.

It obviously affected the turnout, in my opinion. It may seem simple in hindsight, but in a city that notoriously has had problems with its government, and with the disdain many officers hold for the common people, I assure you the reality is a lot heavier.

I had a great time volunteering for Barack Obama in Cleveland last weekend. I knocked on doors in a couple of neighborhoods and had a very positive response. People are fired up!

I helped sign up new volunteers at a campaign organizational meeting in Cleveland. An enthusiastic crowd of about 400 people came to hear speakers and find out how they can help Obama win Ohio.

Congressman John Conyers of Detroit was the featured speaker for the event. He said this is the most exciting Presidential campaign he has ever seen and that goes back to Adlai Stevenson.

The campaign is encouraging people to vote early and they have good reason to do so in Cleveland. Cuyahoga county was recently ordered to adopt new voting machines just a few weeks before the election, leaving little time for the public or election judges to familiarize themselves with the new system before election day. People thought this would be a lower turn out election on which to test the new system. But now, the Democratic Presidential nomination could be decided by results from Cleveland and the rest of Cuyahoga.

At the least, I expect returns to come in slowly from Cuyahoga, which has the largest number of Democratic voters of any county in the state. If I lived in Cleveland I'd be voting early too.

Unforunately my camera batteries ran out so I don't have any pictures. I might go back again before the primary.

A friend and I made the spontaneous decision that Barack Obama could use our help in Ohio for the March 4 primary. I lived in Cleveland for a while in 2003 when I worked on Kucinich's last Presidential campaign, so the trip sounded like a good excuse to see old friends. We traveled from Springfield Illinois yesterday.

I knocked on some doors today in Lakewood, just outside of Cleveland, and the response is very good so far. People are fired up for Obama! My friends have seen commercials for Obama but not Clinton yet. Campaign staff just opened a few makeshift offices in the Cleveland area. I'll post a report with pictures when I get back home.

As usual with intraparty battles, the policy and ideological differences between Clinton and Obama are slight. Both share the party's liberal traditions on social and domestic issues. Both are committed to expanding health coverage and to closing the gap between rich and poor. Both oppose the Bush administration's strategy in Iraq. Both promise to break America's addiction to carbon-based fuels.

Given these similarities, Ohio Democrats have to ask themselves which candidate is more likely, first, to win the White House, and, then, to persuade a closely divided country to embrace his or her vision of change. Put even more pointedly: Who is more likely to change the world of a child born in 2008?

The answer, we think, is Barack Obama.

Although Obama stands on the precipice of a historic breakthrough, his personal story is a classic only-in-America saga: A white mother from Kansas. A black father from Kenya. A childhood in multi-ethnic Hawaii. Scholarships to Ivy League schools. Work as a community organizer and later a law professor in Chicago. Two terms in the Illinois Senate, then a landslide election to the U.S. Senate. An electrifying keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

That speech laid out the template for this campaign. He has challenged America to move beyond rigid racial, religious or partisan divides to focus instead on shared, national goals. It's a message that appeals to young voters and independents, to disillusioned Democrats eager to regain a sense of possibility and, yes, hope.

Obama's frequent talk of hope strikes some people as naive. It leads others to question his toughness. But Obama understands something his critics do not: Change requires vision and optimism, shared sacrifice and mutual trust. Hope can sustain those elements; a presidency defined by political tactics cannot.

Hillary Clinton is an exceptionally bright and accomplished woman. Only a fool could dispute that. It would be nice if Obama's policy proposals were as meaty as those she has put forward. It's no wonder she wants Democrats to see this race as a choice between resumes.

But in a campaign where history matters, she carries an inordinate amount of baggage. Who wants to relive the soap operas of the 1990s?

Bill Clinton says his wife excelled at "making positive changes in other people's lives." Consider that construction. Then listen as Obama talks of bringing people together to change their own lives.

America needs a fresh start. Barack Obama is the Democrat to provide it.

Every once in a while the world produces true leaders people like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, The Dalai Lama and so many others. I ask you, could Barack Obama be one of these rare leaders that world so despartly needs? If so or if not do we have the capabilities to see these qualities? Can we judge without bias? I urge all Americans to open their hearts and their minds to the great legacies of the great leaders that history was so fortuante to share the world with. Can we look forward or are we too provincial and unable to look beyond the past?

The largest newspaper in Ohio, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, broke from a sometimes-conservative past to endorse Barack Obama as the Democratic candidate this past Sunday. What a wonderful suprise to open the paper to the Forum section and see the endorsement on page 2. They also endorsed McCain as the Republican candidate, but if you read the articles carefully, one can't help but sense that they are really pulling for Barack if these two candidates meet in November.

The Plain Dealer has been producing a gritty series of feature articles in recent months about the day-to-day struggles of Clevelanders and their neighborhoods, highlighting issues of safer neighborhoods, increased violence, the mortgage crisis, unemployment and underemployment, affordable health care, and the brain-drain from Northeast Ohio as our highly educated university graduates move away to start careers elsewhere. Accounts of yet another death in Iraq of a northeast Ohioan are pretty much a weekly event. I think that the newspaper sees that only a clean break from the past will move us forward.

A woman on another blog mentioned how the "Yes We Can" video motivated her and so I went to the website http://yeswecansong.com/ just to check it out, but not expecting anything out of the ordinary However, this is a special video - the kind you could play every morning and go out to meet the day excited about helping Obama win. Watching this video evokes the same feelings that I had yesterday when I witnessed the enthusiasm of folks from all over Ohio coning to Columbus to start planning for February, because as it turns out the day after Super Tuesday, Ohio will play a central role in this election. Young, old, black, white, Latino - the sound of voices filled up the room.

So many people showed up for the Ohio planning meeting that not only was the sardine-packed room a fireman's nightmare, but people spilled into all of the adjoining rooms and hallways and some had to stand outside on the sidewalk. Buses came from Cleveland and vans from Akron, Dayton, Toledo and that Cinncin.......city that I still can't spell. At first when Dick Durban started addressing the crown, I felt pride that this articulate man was an Illinois senator. That was before his words brought me and my husband to tears. We haven't worked for a candidate since Harold Washington died, and listening to Senator Durban, I realized why Obama had brought us out of our shells.

The weather was frigid tonight, but with Durban's words ringing in our ears, my husband and I stood on the curb for a Columbus "honk and wave" along with OSU students who have led the way in gathering new voters for Obama. There's joy in the air when five cars in a row sound their horns for victory. Mary

The so-called "big dog" of the Clinton campaign will be appearing to "lead a rally at Cuyahoga Community College's Eastern Campus, 4250 Richmond Road, with Gov. Ted Strickland, Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Warrensville Heights Mayor Marcia Fudge.

The rally, in the Student Services Building gymnasium, is free and open to the public. Doors open at 3:15 p.m.

Clinton will speak around 4 p.m. before heading to a private fund-raiser at Dante's Restaurant on Rockside Road in Valley View."

We all met for the first time and had some snacks and we watched Barack's live simulcast. We planned on a general meeting about every 2 weeks at 8:00 Wednesdays at the Bean Counter so Bertron could make it. We planned for our first such meeting to be this Wednesday, April 4, at 8:00 at the Bean Counter.
We decided that it would be a good idea for Suzy to write to the papers when we want some publicity.Rileyann said that she could help us get involved on the Delta State campus.At our meeting tomorrow we planned to discuss:The Deltans for Obama Rally-we are hosting- I am unsure of the date we decided on, if we did decide on one.-We want to bring voter registration forms, in town as well as absentee registration forms, to all our events and get as many people, and specifically students, to register to vote.-Voter Registration-sounded like it would be a priority. I heard someone from the meeting say "How many students can we register to vote from now until November?"--sounded like a possible mantra.
-Make Petitions for State Senators and State Representatives, as well as our U.S. Senators and Representatives- to get them to endorse Obama. Also I guess the Governor should be included, and Amy Tuck, etc.I made a public group for us on Google, a facebook group, and a group on BarackObama.com

i saw barack last monday

I underestimated his popularity in cleveland this early in the election.

i had tickets to the event and came promptly at six at cuyahoga community college.

i was escorted to the overflow. upset but not angry, i waited the next hour and a half talking with others in the room. finally the ceremony had begun, my friend said. "i bet he'll come in the room. i mean, he only needs to come in and say hi and that would make a great impression." no more than 3 min later than did Barack obama walk in and the place lit up. he has much more presense and charisma in person than i had expected. very impressed with presense in this meeting. that vestle stuff he talk about is great as well.

anyways that is considered sighting number one. i vow to meet this man.

I was lucky enough to attend the Obama rally in Cleveland. I left feeling excited and inspired. We finially have a Presidential candidate that believes in the individual. If all of us individuals band together we can actually change the trajectory of our future. That is exciting to me, and it is my hope that it excites everyone.

Obama spoke about the many times in our past the we changed the path of America--the colonies, women's rights, civil rights, the list went on. I believe we must change our current path. Most foreign countries recognize that there is a divide between Americans and American policy. There should not be a disconnect between us and the people we have elected. Obama recognizes this, and I am confident that he will dissolve the distance between Washington and the rest of us.

Dare I even mention his brilliant ideas on health care reform, improving schools, alternative fuel sources, and ending the war in Iraq? There are countless reasons that we need Barack Obama to be the next President of the United States.

A Trip to Cleveland

Monday, I was able to attend the rally at Cuyahoga Community College near Cleveland, Ohio. Senator Barack Obama and 7,000 of his supporters were entertained and educated by Cleveland area success stories. Then the star of the show came out to speak to a pumped up crowd, the Senator spoke of his hopes for America, including improving education; energy security, independence, and innovation; healthcare availability; free but fair trade; and ending the war in Iraq. The crowd was an amazing mix of racial and ethnic persons, hopefully ending the talk that he is not being supported by African Americans. I attended more than a few events in the past for President Clinton, Gov. Dean, and Senator Kerry as well as others for Senatorial, Representative, and other local candidates, and never have I seen a larger, diverse, and energized crowd so early in the election process. Well it was quite a night! My sister and I both received Barack Obama's book The Audacity of Hope for Christmas, and we were eager to hear him speak live at the Tri-C East campus last night.

We went a couple hours early to wait in line. When we got there, there was already an impressive line reaching just about to the outside door! I became so excited that I literally forgot myself. I became paraniod about punk teens cutting in line (I hate that!). A couple of girls jumped in just behind me. I didn't think and just lashed out, asking them if they were just going cut in line like that. I'm an idiot. They were there to meet their mom or something in line. I was embarrassed and guilty.

My embarrassment stayed when I entered the gym. My sister and I got a great spot, just against the rail that blocked off the walkway/stage that Sen. Obama would walk across. There was fun entertainment and explosive energy in the gym. Finally Barack came out and gave his speech. I got some great pics because I was so close. His speech was great! He covered many topics including health care, the war in Iraq, and foreign relations.

When his speech was done, he started walking down along the rail to greet people. He was coming our way!! My sister was first, shaking his hand and tell him her intention to win him Ohio. I shook his hand and told him I'd be praying for him. He put his arm on my shoulder and said, "Thank you so much, I believe in prayer." And that was that.

What a great encounter with Illinois Senator, and perhaps future President Barack Obama.

This is a call and response message to the world. Hope is yet upon the horizon. Politics as we know it--to be a game of shame-a power struggle-an endless web of finger pointing-ducking and dodging-and just plain and blundt-piss-poor job performance is now over. Americans are demanding a change. We are demamding an abandonment of the current order of things. Politics don't have to be so crude-so uninspiring-so unattainable. Our hope is in Barack Obama and we are on the move to make sure that our hope checks in for duty in 2009. Please be advised that your life is about to be forever changed--you are about to be injected with a patriotic spirit never experienced before in this country--a spirit of proudness never attained in the victories of war or in the victories of an ill fated foreign policy. This is a sense of Patriotism that you get from truly feeling as if the world is a better place--a peace that passes all understanding--a bond with others and a unity stronger than anything.
