Their move comes as a conservative group has bought $250,000 worth of airtime in several presidential battleground states to raise concerns about the appointment of liberal justices to the Supreme Court — without mentioning any political candidates. The MoveOn ad, called "Fighter," features a woman with cancer who questions whether she'll have coverage under the Republican presidential candidate's health care plan. McCain wants to provide tax credits to encourage Americans to purchase private health insurance. To pay for part of his plan, he has proposed requiring workers to pay federal income taxes on the health benefits they now receive tax-free from their employers. The woman in the ad claims she could lose the insurance she gets through her job under his plan, and wouldn't be able to get coverage on her own with a pre-existing condition like cancer. "He wants me to fight cancer and the insurance companies?" she asks. "Fine. I'll take you both on." "Ask Sen. McCain which side he's on," a male narrator says. The ad, which began airing in North Carolina on Thursday, was launched by MoveOn.org's political wing and a coalition of labor unions and Democratic-leaning organizations called Health Care for America Now. The 30-second spot costs $590,000 and runs until Nov. 3 in North Carolina — a substantial buy, about half the size of the North Carolina TV ads bought directly by Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. The groups are also spending $100,000 on online advertising and about $310,000 on DVDs about McCain's health care plan that will be mailed to senior citizens in the state. The health care group also has run a version of the TV ad in several congressional districts around the country. Recent polls show Obama mounting a serious challenge in several traditionally Republican states, including North Carolina. Also on Thursday, the Judicial Confirmation Network began airing an issue ad in some areas that are key to the presidential race. The television spot does not mention either presidential candidate, but it suggests that a more liberal judicial appointment to the Supreme Court would jeopardize the country's values of liberty, equality and inalienable rights. Negotiating Isn't Appeasement
Bush, McCain and other conservatives are on the wrong side of history when they dismiss Obama's foreign policy.

In a speech to the Israeli parliament Thursday, President Bush took a swipe at Barack Obama for his willingness to negotiate with evil regimes.

"Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along," Bush said. "We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is--the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."

But if there is anything that has been discredited by history, it is the argument that every enemy is Hitler, that negotiations constitute appeasement, and that talking will automatically lead to a slaughter of Holocaust-like proportions. It is an argument that conservatives made throughout the Cold War, and, if the charge seemed overblown at the time, it seems positively ludicrous with the clarity of hindsight.

The modern conservative movement was founded in no small part on the idea that presidents Truman and Eisenhower were "appeasing" the Soviets. The logic went something like this: Because communism was evil, the United States should seek to destroy it, not coexist with it; the bipartisan policy of containment, which sought to prevent the further spread of communism, was a moral and strategic folly because it implied long-term coexistence with Moscow. Conservative foreign policy guru James Burnham wrote entire books claiming that containment--which, after the Cold War, would be credited with defeating the Soviet Union--constituted "appeasement."

Containment, negotiation, nuclear stability--each of these things helped protect the United States and end the Cold War. And yet, at the time, conservatives thought each was synonymous with appeasement.

The Bush administration has been little different, refusing for years to talk to North Korea or Iran about their nuclear programs because it wanted to defeat evil, not talk to it. The result was that Pyongyang tested a nuclear weapon and Iran's uranium program continued unfettered. (By contrast, when the administration negotiated with Libya--an act that its chief arms controller, John Bolton, had previously derided as, yes, "appeasement"--it succeeded in eliminating Tripoli's nuclear program.)

Alas, John McCain accused President Clinton of "appeasement" for engaging North Korea, instead calling for "rogue state rollback," and now he dismisses the idea of negotiations with Iran. Given conservatism's historical record, Obama's inclination to negotiate seems only sensible. When will conservatives learn that it is 2008, not 1938?

It's funny, when I was doing research before the NY Democratic Primary, I started doing something similar to this - looking up all of Obama's bills and Hillary's bills to see exactly what each of them has been doing in the Senate. However, lack of time and sheer laziness took over, and I never continued. Thankfully, there are people out there not as lazy as myself. Check out this post from Daily Koz (thank you, VDB!) that succinctly discusses the issues and bills that both major Dem candidates have worked on and supported during their time in the Senate.

I've finally realized why my gut tells me Obama, and it has nothing to do with policy decisions, nor does it have anything to do with him "being cute" (Adam). Quite simply (albeit egotistically), voting for Obama would be like voting for a Harvard-educated, more well-traveled...me. Except for his past coke problem. The more I read about him, the more I see that he views the world and everything in it, not just politics, the same way I do. Strange, but true. Still have to read "Dreams From my Father", which I borrowed from Alex ages ago (after giving it to him the Christmas before last). Anyway, I've been sitting on this article for a while - skimming it here and there when I have the chance - but I've only now had the chance to read it fully, and I'm glad I did. I've always had respect for Andrew Sullivan, even when he was a Republican and I disagreed with him, because his opinions are always based in careful thought and he is extremely intelligent. So, in his article "Goodbye to All That: Why Obama Matters", which appeared in Atlantic Monthly back in November, he explains not only why we should vote for Barack Obama, but why we need to vote for him now, why we shouldn't continue to allow Baby Boomer politics to frame our current debates, and why Obama's life experiences most closely mirror those of most Americans, making him the candidate best equipped to deal with both wars in which our country is currently embroiled - the one in Iraq, and the one between left and right here at home. This is an important article for any Democrat who's still considering their vote to read.

None of this, of course, means that Obama will be the president some are dreaming of. His record in high office is sparse; his performances on the campaign trail have been patchy; his chief rival for the nomination, Senator Clinton, has bested him often with her relentless pursuit of the middle ground, her dogged attention to her own failings, and her much-improved speaking skills. At times, she has even managed to appear more inherently likable than the skinny, crabby, and sometimes morose newcomer from Chicago. Clinton’s most surprising asset has been the sense of security she instills. Her husband—and the good feelings that nostalgics retain for his presidency—have buttressed her case. In dangerous times, popular majorities often seek the conservative option, broadly understood.

The paradox is that Hillary makes far more sense if you believe that times are actually pretty good. If you believe that America’s current crisis is not a deep one, if you think that pragmatism alone will be enough to navigate a world on the verge of even more religious warfare, if you believe that today’s ideological polarization is not dangerous, and that what appears dark today is an illusion fostered by the lingering trauma of the Bush presidency, then the argument for Obama is not that strong. Clinton will do. And a Clinton-Giuliani race could be as invigorating as it is utterly predictable.

But if you sense, as I do, that greater danger lies ahead, and that our divisions and recent history have combined to make the American polity and constitutional order increasingly vulnerable, then the calculus of risk changes. Sometimes, when the world is changing rapidly, the greater risk is caution. Close-up in this election campaign, Obama is unlikely. From a distance, he is necessary. At a time when America’s estrangement from the world risks tipping into dangerous imbalance, when a country at war with lethal enemies is also increasingly at war with itself, when humankind’s spiritual yearnings veer between an excess of certainty and an inability to believe anything at all, and when sectarian and racial divides seem as intractable as ever, a man who is a bridge between these worlds may be indispensable.

We may in fact have finally found that bridge to the 21st century that Bill Clinton told us about. Its name is Obama.

Reforms urged for drug companies.

The reports claim Merck & Co. frequently paid academic scientists to take credit for research articles prepared by company-hired medical writers, a practice called ghostwriting.
They also contend Merck tried to minimize deaths in two studies that showed that the now withdrawn Vioxx didn't work at treating or preventing Alzheimer's disease.

Obama: No earmarks for 2009. Obama did earmark $330 Million for 2008, but he supports an ammendment by Sen. Jim DeMint and will not earmark for 2009.

(Well, I still think that this meeting is a good idea, even if it means I disagree with Obama's assessment of the Middle East as I think it is oversimplified and there is more than one contibuting factor for the current situation).

First Read: Obama and the Olympics: I'm curious here. I know Obama has said that he "is of two minds" concerning this issue, though I wonder how he will resolve this. He did pretty well with his questioning of Gen. Patreus, so I hope he will resolve his internal debate in his mind.

I saw an article posted here yesteday. An except worth repeating:

"In 1961, a young African-American man, after hearing President John F. Kennedy's challenge to, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," gave up his student deferment, left college in Virginia and voluntarily joined the Marines. In 1963, this man, having completed his two years of service in the Marines, volunteered again to become a Navy corpsman. (They provide medical assistance to the Marines as well as to Navy personnel.) The man did so well in corpsman school that he was the valedictorian and became a cardiopulmonary technician. Not surprisingly, he was assigned to the Navy's premier medical facility, Bethesda Naval Hospital, as a member of the commander in chief's medical team, and helped care for President Lyndon B. Johnson after his 1966 surgery.'

"For his service on the team, which he left in 1967, the White House awarded him three letters of commendation. What is even more remarkable is that this man entered the Marines and Navy not many years after the two branches began to become integrated. While this young man was serving six years on active duty, Vice President Dick Cheney, who was born the same year as the Marine/sailor, received five deferments, four for being an undergraduate and graduate student and one for being a prospective father. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both five years younger than the African-American youth, used their student deferments to stay in college until 1968. Both then avoided going on active duty through family connections. Who is the real patriot? The young man who interrupted his studies to serve his country for six years or our three political leaders who beat the system? Wright joined the military if he were in southern USA he was not allowed to use a rest room in public bus stations, service stations, eat at a dime store lunch counter, sleep at hotels and motels or watch an integrated sports game. He was serving his country when the third Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964 ending Jim Crow law. I wonder what mental wounds Senator Obama's former pastor received 40 years ago today.

However, there will come a time where those whom he will try to work with will have essentially fundametally uncompromisable stances against the interest of the people. Meaning, he will have to take a side against strong organizational interests in support of the people, and he may have to work with people he may have never worked with before with positions unlike his own, but with similar concerns for the affairs of the people, like some of the people mentioned at the end of this blog entry of mine.

In a long church rally today, called to promote racial reconciliation after several recent high-profile crimes, Mayor Edward G. Rendell joined Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader, in challenging residents of Philadelphia and the nation to put aside ethnic differences.

Mr. Rendell became one of the few big-city mayors ever to share a podium with Mr. Farrakhan, a circumstance that was all the more unusual because Mr. Rendell is Jewish and Mr. Farrakhan is widely regarded as anti-Semitic. Representatives from the city's leading Jewish and Roman Catholic organizations were invited to participate in the rally, but all declined.

As the keynote speaker before an enthusiastic audience of more than 3,000 at the Tindley Temple United Methodist Church, h Mr. Farrakhan praised Mayor Rendell, a popular Democrat, for ''his courage and strength to rise above emotion and differences that might be between us or our communities.'' Mr. Farrakhan added: ''I believe, Mayor Rendell, that history will applaud your efforts.''

Mr. Rendell, whose speech preceded Mr. Farrakhan's, commended the Nation of Islam for its emphasis on family values and self-sufficiency.

Eleanor Roosevelt is quoted as saying: "Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people."

I have mentioned before my freelance writing at Associated Content online. La Velle Jones, an Obama supporter, took my advice and already has garnered a small following from AC's Content Producers. It seems many Obama supporters have no problem writing articles on blog posts and they might do well to be publishing them at AC. This is my plea for help.

A small minded AC CP wrote this: "I am emphatically stating his followers are displaying the same types of messianic worship that Hitler's followers displayed toward him."

That prompted me to write 3 myth busting articles in support of us supporters. Another CP has over 300 comments on her: Obama is a racist article. When an article gets many pageviews, many comments, emailed a lot, AC editiors take notice and highlight it.

I do not care if you read my articles. I ask that you take a moment to leave a comment: I am an Obama supporter and whatever reason you support him. Can we not beat 300 plus comments on a negative article? As Obama would say: Supporters, we can do better than that! Thanks so much for your help.

Born on October 16, 1947 in San Francisco he grew up with his adoptive parents in Atherton, California. This performer was expelled from several schools due to undiagnosed dyslexia. Singer, songwriter and guitarist, he is best known for being the founder of a popular rock group.

He has two children with his wife, whose sister is a NASCAR race car driver. Can you name that star?

Born on September 11, 1943 this drummer won a Grammy Award in 1991 for Best World Music Album. Growing up in California he became interested in percussion drumming when a Nigerian drummer performed at his school and he was asked to try out the instrument. With his father, a champion rudimental drummer, he owned and operated a music store, selling drums and other musical intruments. In 1967 he became a member of a popular rock band which he left in 1971. He has traveled the world gathering information to write and publish 4 books on the tradition of dumming throughout history.

In addtion he is on the Board of Directors of the Institute for Music and Neurologic Foundation; on the Board of Trustees for the American Folklife Center and Spokesperson for Save Our Sounds initiative. He also serves on the Library of Congress National Recorded Sound Preservation Board, often recording and reissuing historical and cultural sound recordings. Can you name that star?

Do you think stars who have had their own groupies or adoring fans would be "starry eyed" or faint in Obama's presence? The AC CP seems to think so.

Born on August 17, 1943 in New York city, he won two Academy Awards in addition to a Golden Globe. His mother was a painter. His father was an abstract expressionist painter and sculptor. He dropped out of school at age 13 to join a street gang and studied at Lee Strasberg's Actor's Studio. His career began at age 16 working in theatre and off-Broadway productions. The actor has also directed and produced films. Off camera he invests in real estate and other ventures such as founding a film studio, film festival and restaurants.

A March 12, 2007 article written by acclaimed Washington columnist Robert Novak sheds a very revealing light on the true sentiment of Hillary Clinton during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement. Clinton recently was found to have minimized the great and monumental strides taken by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by stating that it was Lyndon B. Johnson, then president, who should receive the credit for the civil rights progress including the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The fact is, in 1963, not only was Hillary Clinton a republican, but she was also a staunch supporter of republican Senator Barry Goldwater, well known as a segregationist and one of the most vocal senators adamently against the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which is why he lost in his presidential bid to Lyndon B. Johnson. Novak writes "...how then could she be a 'Goldwater Girl' in the next year's presidential election?" He continues, "...she described herself in her memoirs as 'an active Young Republican' and 'a Goldwater girl, right down to my cowgirl outfit.'

While Clinton was re-inventing her past, her road to the White House is not going as planned. Instead of a steady procession to coronation at the Denver convention, she is involved in a real struggle against credible opponents led by Obama. No wonder she and her handlers were tempted to imply the existence long ago of a young lady in Chicago's suburbs who never really existed."

Reports have stated that information in her 'secret thesis' could be the 'Swift Boat' ammo to be used by the Republican Party against her should she become the nominee. (read more about 'secret thesis' at MSNBC).

Interview: Barack and the Post & Courier on "American Dream" Plan

Yesterday, Barack's speech on reclaiming the American Dream -- which focused on creating a middle class tax cut and guaranteeing paid sick days and family leave for working families, making college cheaper for students with a $4000 refundable tax credit made available at the time of enrollment, and ensuring a secure retirement for all by enrolling workers in portable retirement accounts -- was a big hit around the country.

This morning, the Charleston Post & Courier has an interview with Barack about his effort to reclaim the American dream.

Obama explains 'American Dream' plan

Post & Courier (P&C): The plan you outlined today includes tax breaks and credits for working families, college students and for the elderly making less than $50,000 a year, as well as increased spending on after-school programs. Do you have an estimate of what this will cost?

OBAMA: "We have ensured that all these are paid for because I have a strong commitment to pay-go, to making sure that if we have tax breaks, we find offsetting spending cuts, that if we have increases in spending, we have the revenues to pay for it.

The primary way that we pay for the tax cuts is to shift away from some of the tax cuts that are currently going to companies that are shipping jobs overseas and using tax havens and so forth. There it's really a shift of tax breaks away from corporations and those who are doing very well to the pockets of working Americans."

P&C: This speech addresses Americans' pocketbooks. How important do you think that is relative to the other issues, such as Iraq, energy independence and immigration, and the other issues out there?

OBAMA: "People feel like the American dream is slipping away. I see it all the time when I'm traveling through South Carolina, when I'm traveling in Iowa and New Hampshire. It's not just one region of the country. People generally feel like they're working harder. They haven't seen income growth. Their costs for health care, for gasoline, for home heating, for college have all risen, and they're using credit cards to stay afloat. They're using home equity loans to stay afloat."

P&C: Under your plan, people not only would be able to deduct their mortgage interest from their taxes but also would get a 10 percent tax credit based on their annual mortgage payments?

OBAMA: "That would be for those people who don't itemize. The problem we have right now with the way our mortgage deduction works is the guy with a $1 million house gets a much bigger tax break than the guy with a $100,000 house. If you take the standard deduction, then you're generally not getting that break, and we think it's important, given the problems a lot of homeowners are having around the country, to give them some relief."

P&C: What do you expect would be the most difficult part of this plan to accomplish?

OBAMA: Obviously, getting health care done is going to be a heavy lift because the drug and insurance companies have spent $1 billion over the last decade fighting reform. That's going to be my first priority when I get into office domestically is to get that done. Once we get that done, I think the changes in the tax code are long overdue, and I that think most Americans, including wealthy Americans, recognize that there has been unfairness in the system. There's a reason why the top 1 percent have doubled their share of the income and wealth in this country over the past couple of decades -- doubled it -- whereas ordinary Americans have literally seen their wages and incomes flat line during the same period."

P&C: Can you be more specific about how you would 'take on the insurance industry' and pass universal health care?

OBAMA: "One of the things I've always said is I give credit to Senator Clinton in trying to push health care reform back in 1993. I think the process she took was fundamentally flawed because she went behind closed doors. ... I would take a reverse process. I think the more open and transparent the debate is, the more included the American people are, the better off we're going to be. I would get everybody sitting around a big table --all the parties concerned: employers, employees, doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, patients rights advocates, the relevant congressmen.

.... This would be on C-SPAN, and we would have a lengthy debate about how we're going to move this process forward and make sure the American people understand that they're already paying, if they have health insurance, an extra $900 in added premiums because of uncompensated care. We've got a system of universal care. It's just the most inefficient imaginable. That's why we pay twice as much as any country on earth."

P&C: What do you feel has been the most overlooked issue in the campaign?

OBAMA: "We have not had in the debates a serious conversation about education. ... When I'm traveling around South Carolina, through the Corridor of Shame, and walk into schools built in the 1800s, I can tell you a lot of folks in South Carolina are deeply concerned about education. I think that the plans that we have to expand early childhood education, to close the achievement gap, to provide higher teacher salaries and better professional training and support, to change No Child Left Behind so it's not punitive and forcing teachers to teach to the test but is instead encouraging creativity in arts and music and a well-rounded education for children.... Those are all issues that I would like to see discussed more in future debates."
