Give Me Strength

God is out there somewhere. I don’t know where. Once, when I was in an African prison I yelled back at some would-be reborn Christian preacher: “God has never come to my bunk.” He had been, as is the custom of reborn preachers, ministers or flock-leaders, indicating that God had spoken to him in the night, and instructed him regarding something I ought to do. For some reason God never instructs His acolytes in what they ought to do on their own, other than raise money and make members of the flock serve them.

It does not say, anywhere in the Bible, that God will not give you a burden too heavy to carry. That common saying is just pure bullshit. Think about the death camps in Germany, just for a second, and consider such idiotic God-driven nonsense. I do not believe you can ‘Trust in God,’ or even ‘Let go and let God.’ I think those are buzz-phrases created by reborn idiots. I do believe that if you pray to Him for strength, however, that He will definitely send you more problems so you can grow stronger in attempting to deal with them. My own life is proof of that little homily.

Nobody knows I smoke. Not one soul living on this planet. A couple of people used to know, but they died shortly after they discovered my secret. I don’t like to execute people without some ceremony. Instead of offering the intended victim a cigarette, however, I have one myself. They get the extra time while I finish the process of smoking it. That’s only fair. I smoke Marlboro cigarettes. The long ones with filters. Like the guy on the horse in those old ads. He died of lung cancer, I heard sometime back. I don’t think I’m going to die of lung cancer. I picked a career, or rather it picked me, that will likely preclude that.

It was raining just beyond my tucked-in corner of the railroad station. I smoked there because the station was filled only with members of the native population.

They knew I was nearby, back pressed firmly into the peeling wooden boards, but they made believe I didn’t exist. To me that was the same as not knowing anything.

About my smoking secret, I mean. The natives were like Knuckle-draggers, they didn’t count as living souls. They were just there, like the rocks, the trees or even the rain. I’m not prejudiced on the basis of color. I’m just prejudiced on the basis of the business I’m in.

When it rains in Nairobi, it rains for quite some time. The water coming down is clean, however, unlike the rest of the dusty dirty city. I love Nairobi, don’t get me wrong. And I love the rain in Nairobi because it drives everyone inside, then cleans the streets and universally broken sidewalks. I walk in the rain. I breathe it in. Plus its cool. Nairobi is pretty hot most of the time. I like it cool, but I don’t get many assignments up on the Bering Sea, or down in Tierra del Fuego. Africa is kind of my beat. And I’m not a Knuckle-dragger either. I don’t do the wet stuff at all. I’m one of the rather more rare guys who have guys who do that sort of thing. Maybe there are a few women who do what I do, I don’t know. I’ve never met one, or even heard of one, but these are changing times. Some of those guys, the Knuckle-draggers, were who I was standing near the rain waiting for. The train was overdue out of Lake Victoria, stopping in Nairobi, before making its way down to Mombasa.

Across the tracks I could see old rusting steam engines sitting on bare ground. Steam had given way to diesel ten years back. I remember riding the steam- powered train down to Mombasa, so long ago. The night had been filled with burning cinders, falling down and away past the dining car windows. It had not seemed romantic at the time, but in retrospect it was all of that, and more. I wistfully drew in the last of the Marlboro smoke, then pinched out the stub and replaced it in my red and white cardboard pack. I would leave no evidence of my secret behind, not that anyone around me cared. Kenyan natives are great. They pretty much respect and appreciate white folk, like me. They give deference and they don’t get in your face, as in some other cultures.

The train came in. Just like that. No whistle of warning. I was not in Europe or America. The rules were different. The old cars rocked slowly to a stop, compressed air hissing out from the brakes, resembling steam, up and down the line. I waited.

The natives crammed aboard the train as the passengers tried to get off. It was a mess of water-soaked bedlam, but it wasn’t noisy. The people of Kenya are a quiet lot. Another feature I like.

My guys climbed down just as the whistle of the engine finally sounded, indicating that the train was pulling out. Conductors in blue sweaters and black caps pushed and pulled stragglers aboard. The train creaked as it eased from the station. I turned and headed for the gray Nissan Pajero parked illegally in front. It was an old rental thing with a five speed, unlocked because there were no locks, only holes in all the doors. But I had left nothing inside. I carried nothing except my cigarettes, money and a passport. The rental papers for the car were not even there, as I wouldn’t return the vehicle, just call and tell the agency where to pick it up. My guys would have stuff. It was what they did. If they got caught with any of it, then they’d have to count on some other operatives to get them out of trouble. Or not.

I drove. Two of them in the back and one up front with me. We didn’t talk. They knew the mission. We were not, and were not going to be, friends. If there was to be violence I didn’t want to be grieving over the loss of any of them, or they of me.

Fucking New Guy Syndrome we’d called it, after the Nam. And it had its proper place in our work.

I drove fast. As fast as a three liter Pajero would go, which was not that fast at all.

One hundred and forty kilometers per hour was about max, which was about seventy miles an hour, or so. The roads out of Nairobi were built for about half that, however, so it was a rough scary ride. The guys gave no indication of discomfort or fear, however. It was that kind of business.

We were headed for a village just South of the big National Wildlife Park outside of Nairobi. I never could remember the park’s name. The village is a Masai place. The Masai are tall lanky natives who wear weird throw-back attire and carry long ugly spears. The men, anyway. And they stink to high heaven, as they never ever wash. Ever. I like them, but then, my former wife had once told me that I had no sense of smell. I guess didn’t have much taste in women either. I’d never found any who trusted me. And I couldn’t be around people who didn’t trust me. If they were ‘inside the wire’ kind of women, part of my tribe, then my trustworthiness should have been beyond question. I trusted them. But women don’t trust so easy, I discovered. So I was alone. I worked in a field that did not lend itself well to either trust or believability. Alone was not okay, but it simply had to do.

The village appeared next to the road about twenty clicks on the other side of the park. The inside of the Pajero was filled with dust, even though the rain had done a lot to cut it back. The park had been nothing but dirt roads and dust. Rain only sealed the top inch of the dust, and the dust went down a good four inches deeper than that. The village was a ram-shackle affair of branch constructed hovels, mud huts and half-thatched roofs behind flimsy fences. The fences were to keep animals in, not out. No self-respecting lion would ever allow itself the indignity of being speared full of holes on the interior open plaza of a Masai village.

I drove through a likely hole in the fence. Chickens and a few dogs scattered. I knocked down a few small pieces of stacked junk, and maybe a three-stone fireplace or two. I parked in the center of the village and shut off the engine. We sat. Nobody appeared. The Knuckle-dragger next to me spoke for the first time.

“I’m Burt, and these are Tom and Walt,” he said, as he pointed toward the back seat.

I didn't laugh when a cloud of dust formed near the end of his extended finger.

“Hey,” I responded, looking carefully at each of them. We would not be friends, but our mutual survival was now dependent upon the performance of each of us. Missions involving violence seldom ever went smoothly. Aberrantly strange things were always cropping up.

“The target is being held somewhere nearby. I don’t know where. Our contact is supposed to meet us here." I said the words with finality. We were not going to go social at this tense point of the mission.

I looked at my Omega. It was the same watch the astronauts had worn to the moon. Or so the salesman had told me when I’d purchased it. It was pretty damned accurate, I had to admit. Our source had twenty minutes to make contact or I’d scrub the mission. While we waited, we were targets ourselves. It was a risk that came with the territory. We waited in the vehicle. It wasn’t likely that any force was going to take out four white guys, armed to the teeth, sitting inside a rental four-wheel-drive in the middle of a pacified Masai village. Getting out could lead to booby-traps or other hidden hazards. We waited inside.

A tall Masai warrior appeared between two of the hovels to our front. He motioned with his characteristic spear. The four of us got out of the vehicle. I looked at my guys to assure myself that nobody was coming out locked and loaded. Violence escalates from the things you do before violence happens, I knew. We needed to be just four white guys walking, escorted, across the Serengeti. Everyone was cool.

We followed the nearly seven foot tall native through the saw grass just East of the village. It was a well-beaten path so we had no trouble. We could have followed the tribesman with blinders on, as his aroma was that overpowering, even twenty feet back. I do have a sense of smell I thought, sending a mental message to my ex-wife.

We came upon a clearing at the base of one of those huge Baobab trees, its trunk at least twenty feet thick. A man lay on his side next to the tree, his hands tied behind him with what appeared to be vines. The man was white, wearing the phony safari gear so common to visiting tourists. Even his canvas hat was there, on the ground next to him. I was surprised by that, as the Masai are known for stealing anything not tied, glued or welded down. The warrior stood next to the laying man, planting the base of his spear down on the man’s torso. He looked at me, but said nothing.

I pulled a two inch stack of Kenyan Shillings from my back pocket. I’d exchanged two hundred dollars worth of U.S. currency at the rail station. I handed the warrior the cash. He grabbed it, then walked away immediately, back toward the village. I waited until the five of us were the only humans evident out on the Savannah. Then I crouched.

“You alive?” I asked the downed man. His eyes opened. He nodded vigorously. I stepped back. Automatically, Tom and Walt grabbed the man by his shoulders and roughly seated him, back to the Baobab trunk. They backed away.

“Burt,” I whispered. Carefully, Burt took a medium sized automatic out from under his rain coat and handed it to me. Then he reached inside the coat a second time and came out with a polished black cylinder. I handed the automatic back. Burt finished assembling the silenced killing machine.

“We’re not supposed to talk to you, but what the hell, I never do exactly what they tell me to do anyway,” I offered to the man against the tree, by way of passing time, as I moved to get my pack of Marlboros out.

“I did it,” the man whispered out. “I know you’re his people. I did it. I went to that prison and told them about him. I admit it. But I had to do it. If I didn’t do it he’d have ruined my family. Our business would have been gone. We have nowhere to go. We’re Lebanese. We’re not welcome anywhere. We don’t even have passports.

I even dressed like a tourist, just like he told me.”

I sat on my haunches, no longer reaching for my box of cigarettes. The mission was to take out the man who had deliberately informed on one of our agents, getting that agent very dead, indeed. Payback was uncommon to the intelligence business, I knew, at least payback in violence, but there were certain circumstances. This had appeared to be one of them, as the dead agent had also been a highly decorated former Marine Officer and well connected politically. Unlike myself, he’d also been rumored to be well-liked. The fact that I’d been instructed not to talk to the target had not gone down well with me, although I had not remarked at the time. If I have to be involved in someone’s passing, I like to make certain that some sort of justice in the universe is being balanced.

“What have you got for me?” I asked. The Lebanese just looked back at me.

“If we are not to end this all right here, then you have to give me some reason why your passing should not take place.” I stared into the man’s black eyes, seeing nothing but truth. Everything thing he’d said so far had reeked of truth, and that made me very uncomfortable.

“I don’t have anything,” the man said, his chin sagging to his chest.

“Who was going to destroy your family?” I prompted him. He looked up. Then he looked from Burt to the other two Knuckle-draggers, then back at me. I stood, both knees and the small of my back in pain at the same time. I grunted.

“Take a hike out on the Serengeti for a bit,” I said to Burt. He grimaced, then handed the suppressed weapon to me. I took it. I knew the three of them probably had six more weapons among them, or more. Knuckledraggers were big on toys and equipment, cramming diplomatic sacks with all manner of pyrotechnics.

I waited for the guys to get a good thirty yards down the path, before I squatted back down.

“Paul Haggerty,” the Lebanese expelled with one soft breath. I said nothing back.

I didn’t have another question. I was too shocked. Paul Haggerty was the American

Ambassador to Kenya. Ambassadors never ever get involved in operational agency business, at least I had never heard of it happening before. For an Ambassador to be involved with the killing of a field agent was almost too impossible to consider.

“I understand that you have to kill me. But my family. They won’t be hurt, will they?

I have a wife and four children.” He tried to go on but I held up one hand in front of his face.

“Do you have any idea why Paul would want the agent dead?” The Lebanese shook his head violently. “Do you have any idea who killed our man?” I followed up, beginning to wonder exactly what had taken place in that prison outside of Nairobi.

Kenya was not exactly an enemy of the United States. The Soviets were long gone.

Terrorism was mostly a geographically limiting situation, excepting 9/11, of course.

Why the revelation that a man was an agent of the CIA would get him killed in a place like Kenya had no comforting answer that I could come up with.

The man shook his head again. I believed everything he’d told me. But I didn’t know what to do with it.

I rose to my feet once again with same groan. I stepped away from the Baobad and saw Burt pacing in the distance, nervously. If I got myself killed it would not look good in the after-action report, for him, or the other guys. They had to do what I said, but they also had to protect me. I waved him back.

“Cut him loose,” I said, when the three had shambled back. I handed the silenced weapon to Burt. “We won’t be needing that.”

Tom and Walt got the Lebanese to his feet and cut through the vines. The man glanced around him like he was some sort of hunted bird, looking for the next direction of attack.

“What do I do?” he asked, finally. I took the eighteen remaining hundred dollar bills of mission cash from my front pocket. I put the small stack into his hand.

“We’re taking you back to your family. Then you’re going to disappear for a few weeks while I get this all sorted out. And I mean disappear. Do you understand?”

“You did not know?” the Lebanese asked me, looking at my three guys, without going on. I shook my head.

“There will be trouble, I think,” he said, with an air of finality.

The village was as dead when we returned, as it had been when we’d arrived. It was obvious that no one had touched the Pajero. The villagers wanted nothing to do with us. As I drove madly toward Nairobi, the Lebanese wedged in between Tom and Walt in the back seat, I supposed that nobody in the U.S. Embassy was going to want anything to do with us either.

Well today the Nobel Peace Prize goes to a man who has overcome American bias/bigotry to become the country's first African American President. A feat, which I believe in itself is a tremendous accomplishment, and is no less than that of Nelson Mandela becoming the first Black President of South Africa after the end of apartheid. I tip my hat to the Honorable President.

Obama's award reflects wonderfully on America and is indeed the world's approval of the new direction this country is moving.

I believe that Obama deserves this award, and the critics, as usual, is grasping at straws, and showing their terrible bias with almost screams for the Nobel Peace Prize committee to withdraw the award.

It is a very impressive thing to see a Black man accomplishing so much and not being on the wrong side of the law. The only people that he does not inspire are ardent bigots.

Michael Steele's criticism wreaks of jealousy and self hate, and it is not a good look to have them attacking the President for everything that happens to him.

If GOD came out of the sky and gave Obama an award his critics would most definitely argue with GOD about President Obama's deservedness; at which point GOD would probably snap his fingers and send them to hell. Guess my point is that no matter what good President Obama does it may never be good enough for some people.

The people who voted to give the award to the President did so after serious debates, and their decision should be respected and not second guessed just because the recipient is Obama. The President should feel nothing but pride and joy at this honor, and make no excuses for the nobel peace prize committee's choice.

The map, based on 18 months’ worth of satellite data, shows very high levels of NO2 above major European and North American cities and across much of north-east China. South-east Asia and Africa also have raised concentrations of the gas due to their burning of vegetation. “Ship tracks are visible in some locations,” says Steffen Beirle, one of the research team at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. “Look at the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean between the southern tip of India and Indonesia.” Although NO2 is formed naturally by lightning and by microbes in the ground, it is also released into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels by power plants, heavy industry and vehicles. Large quantities of the gas can cause respiratory problems and lung damage, and can also contribute to harmful ozone forming near ground level.

Obama has commented on helping poor nations to develop clean technologies but as you can see, it is not the poor countries that harm the planet the most. It is the rich large countries doing all of the damage. We first need to look at home and prevent the devastation that has been ongoing. United States, China, and Europe need to change the way they live first before they can start criticizing other poorer nations that only amount to about 11% of emissions around the world. Our polar ice caps have lost nearly a third of its size from 1981 to 2003(NASA Data). Your plan is to reduce amounts of emissions by the year 2050. By your logic, we won’t have a polar ice cap left. There won’t be anything to save. The climates around the world are already beginning to shift. Racism – The Durban II, Geneva Conference

The past week - April 20 -24, 2009, Geneva, Switzerland hosted ‘The Durban II conference’ on racism. The preceding event in 2001 held in Durban, South Africa marred by racial overtones and negative attacks against the state of Israel evidently led the United States and Western allies to boycott the recent U.N meeting.

It was a United Nations gathering to address the persisting contemporary discriminatory practices often transforming into persecution, oppression and even genocide in some parts of the world. According to the White House and media reports, the reason behind United States and allies’ absence at the symposium was the blue print content notably against Israel by the Islamic Republic of Iran. However, the United Nations’ assurance to eliminate any anti-Israeli inflammatory remarks from the Iranian President’s speech failed in convincing the United States, Israel and others to attend the world forum.

Meanwhile, predictably the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinijad’s rhetorical speech caused spectacle prompting other European diplomats to briefly abandon the summit. To the United Nations’ credit, the subsequent address by the Iranian President modified to reflect reality on the tragic holocaust previously denied by the political figure.

Whenever a consortium organized to deal with sensitive humanitarian issue of great magnitude, the stage is set for fireworks and doesn’t require more than a spark to ignite the flame into blazing fire. All those refuting the one nation’s contentious repetitive conduct, regrettably ignored the wide spectrum of humanitarian crises around the world. The objection against a particular nation’s demeanor effectively dismissed the urgency for unanimous solutions to global problems affecting humanity.
Further, such action conspicuously displayed hierarchy prevalent in the humanitarian priorities.

Every continent has nations with dark legacy and embarrassing episodes of human rights violation. In the new millennium, the global community challenged to empathize with those currently enduring incessant suffering due to lack of freedom, inequality, injustice including intolerance.

The Geneva conference was a great platform for the nations that boycotted the meeting exclusively the United States and Israel to express serious commitment in resolving the age-old Middle East conflict between Israel and Palestine. Any glimpse of hope in the two states solutions approved by vast majority of population on both sides with a free Palestine comprising West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem alongside the democratic Israel unequivocally accepted as a sovereign state in the entire region would have instantaneously gained credibility in the large presence of the United Nations.

Needlessly, as holocaust victims Israel was better qualified to condemn any crime against humanity and set an example by leading the world in the establishment of peace and democracy with its neighbor Palestine. Israel had a unique opportunity in Geneva to demonstrate solemn pledge and action to aid those, relevantly the Palestinians deserving similar liberty granted to Israel predominantly with the support and solidarity among the nations around the world. Israel’s unprecedented humanitarian gesture would have made it incumbent on the Arab nations at the conference to forge alliance in promoting regional unity and peace.

If the world would not have heeded to the humanitarian call for an Independent Israel, it could have resulted in the devastating annihilation of a specific human race. Likewise, South Africa proudly declaring results from a democratic election today would have succumbed to oppressive apartheid without the international community’s involvement in the freedom of that nation.

There is immense misery and extreme hardships in various parts of the world. People in these regions generally exposed to despair, depression and death at infancy consider themselves fortunate if they live beyond the short life expectancy because of poverty, disease, war and deprivation of basic human rights.

Geneva conference reached a broad based consensus against racial and gender discrimination, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia other than human rights abuses across the globe. An international assembly by governments from most parts of the world had the moment and venue to review pertinent matter concerning different nations and people. Unfortunately, the U.N committee presumably under intense pressure from nations prioritizing political agenda in their allegiance to a single ally, did not layout the importance of relieving humanity from the perpetual violence through war, invasion and occupation reminiscent of the twentieth century’s imperialism and colonialism .

Is there deficiency in related topics involving the remaining population on the planet seeking entitlement to the international representation, rescue and relief from burgeoning crimes against innocent civilians?

Only if rationality and utilitarianism prevailed over popular political dogma of individualism, the desirable goals for fairness and justice are attainable in human affairs.

Is the struggle for peace and independence by the population in Palestine, Burma, Tibet, and North Korea any less significant than the international feud between Israel and Iran?

What about the status quo of civil wars contributing to genocides in Rwanda, Darfur, Congo and other parts of Africa?

Should the world ignore the escalating ethnic cleansing in Sri Lanka as an internal matter rather than an international moral issue?

Where was the denunciation of the pervasive Taliban abuse of women in Afghanistan now dangerously spreading to the Northwestern regions of Pakistan?

Why did the summit not extensively focus on the various abuses in Latin, Central and South America and China, notwithstanding the denial of equal status to women in the Middle East and other Islamic nations?

On the generic concept of racism, xenophobia - typically the fear of the unknown, homophobia - the overt hate crimes against gay and trans-gender community and other horrific incidents in human trafficking, child pornography and numerous offenses were excluded during the five-day long international meeting.

Apparently, the interpretation of ‘tolerance’ in the crimes against humanity is subject to the relationship among existing and emerging economic and political powers in the global society.

The protocol on protests, boycott and co-operation alike varies depending on the nations along with political and economic repercussions arising from such action.

For example, the Iranian President’s controversial stance against Israel held responsible for the Western nations’ boycott of the latest Geneva conference on racism while implying the other attendees’ motive questionable.

Nevertheless, the human rights activists’ plea to boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympics to draw attention towards the plight of the Tibetan population persecuted by the hour and suppression of the democracy movement in the People’s Republic of China rejected by the participating nations prominently those who recently boycotted the Geneva conference.

It is widespread knowledge that the emerging economic power China being the treasury and
Exchequer for the world economy, a nuclear nation possessing veto power routinely exercised against common benefit in the U.N. Security Council decisions, privileged with supreme diplomatic immunity in all things inhumane.

In the recent G-20 summit, call for globalization over protectionism dominated the theme for global economic revival. Synonymously, in the environmental matter and international security collective effort embraced as a successful strategy. Henceforth, collaborative action regarded imminent to resolve international crises.

Ironically, abstaining from leadership at the summit to formulate policies in the restoration of human rights, freedom and civil liberties, the fundamental requirements for peace, progress and prosperity, creates a vacuum rather than serving the real purpose.

History is testimony to the rise and fall of civilizations that fair well when guided by wisdom, compassion and courage for universal good.

Rescue Campers in West Ashley Waiting to Help African Child Soldiers

April 26, 2009, Charleston, SC- The campers have moved to the corner of a busy intersection behind a suburban Barns and Nobel where cars wiz by on their way to the beach on a warm April Sunday afternoon. They are trapped and await rescue as do the thirty thousand children in Uganda, the Congo and Sudan who are carrying weapons in a war they did not start, do not understand and cannot escape without our help.

These campers have committed to live in third world conditions like that of the child soldiers until major political leaders acknowledge their movement and agree to work towards bringing the abductor war lords in Uganda, the Congo and Sudan to justice and the battle scarred and abused children home to their families. As of 1 pm Sunday, they’re out at the corner of Highway 61 and Old Wallace Road, behind the Barnes and Noble waiting on a Senator, Mayor or Congressman to visit and “liberate” them.

Some of the campers have gone back to school. Others, from Cities where the event has already been successfully concluded by the arrival of a person of compassionate influence have been liberated and are on their way to reinforce Charleston. They’re going to camp on a nearby lot and demonstrate on that corner until the Political system responds. They are peaceful, positive and friendly, but they’re out there trying to change the world.

They have circulated petitions and written letters, but the indifference of our times pushes those of goodwill and hope to commitments which confront a society obsessed by the recession’s disruptions of their shallow material expectations. We may miss a vacation. Our children may have to trade their worn out Nikes for shoes from pick and pay. It’s hard to remember how lucky we are.

We could be losing sleep at night wondering if our 12 year old son has been killed in the unending civil war in Uganda, an unwilling and uncomprehending conscript in a contest which looks more like a war between street gangs than a military contest. We don’t have to live that way and we forget that tens of thousands of families in villages in Africa do. Some children get wounded. Some get raped. Some get killed.

These Rescue campers in Charleston want us to remember. They want our leaders to act. They didn’t fully understand how conservative and complacent South Carolina is when they committed to this. Most have little experience with politics and community organizing. They’re a collection of college students and church volunteers led by a few activists.

If you know someone of political influence, ask them to pay a visit. Go by yourself to say thanks and shake hands. Learn about what they are doing.

Remember we are all captives of the indifference and complacency which surrounds us. Even those of us who fight hard and long know the frontiers of what we achieve are limited by the attitudes which infect our culture. Let’s make sure our encouragement reaches these people so they successfully conclude their campout and their witness reaches and liberates the children whose pictures hang from the tent ropes.

America’s Earliest Terrorists

Lessons from America’s first war against Islamic terror.

At the dawn of a new century, a newly elected United States president was forced to confront a grave threat to the nation — an escalating series of unprovoked attacks on Americans by Muslim terrorists. Worse still, these Islamic partisans operated under the protection and sponsorship of rogue Arab states ruled by ruthless and cunning dictators.

Sluggish in recognizing the full nature of the threat, America entered the war well after the enemy’s call to arms. Poorly planned and feebly executed, the American effort proceeded badly and at great expense — resulting in a hastily negotiated peace and an equally hasty declaration of victory.

As timely and familiar as these events may seem, they occurred more than two centuries ago. The president was Thomas Jefferson, and the terrorists were the Barbary pirates. Unfortunately, many of the easy lessons to be plucked from this experience have yet to be fully learned.

The Barbary states, modern-day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, are collectively known to the Arab world as the Maghrib (”Land of Sunset”), denoting Islam’s territorial holdings west of Egypt. With the advance of Mohammed’s armies into the Christian Levant in the seventh century, the Mediterranean was slowly transformed into the backwater frontier of the battles between crescent and cross. Battles raged on both land and sea, and religious piracy flourished.

The Maghrib served as a staging ground for Muslim piracy throughout the Mediterranean, and even parts of the Atlantic. America’s struggle with the terror of Muslim piracy from the Barbary states began soon after the 13 colonies declared their independence from Britain in 1776, and continued for roughly four decades, finally ending in 1815.

Although there is much in the history of America’s wars with the Barbary pirates that is of direct relevance to the current “war on terror,” one aspect seems particularly instructive to informing our understanding of contemporary Islamic terrorists. Very simply put, the Barbary pirates were committed, militant Muslims who meant to do exactly what they said.

Take, for example, the 1786 meeting in London of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja, the Tripolitan ambassador to Britain. As American ambassadors to France and Britain respectively, Jefferson and Adams met with Ambassador Adja to negotiate a peace treaty and protect the United States from the threat of Barbary piracy.

These future United States presidents questioned the ambassador as to why his government was so hostile to the new American republic even though America had done nothing to provoke any such animosity. Ambassador Adja answered them, as they reported to the Continental Congress, “that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.”

Sound familiar?

The candor of that Tripolitan ambassador is admirable in its way, but it certainly foreshadows the equally forthright declarations of, say, the Shiite Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in the 1980s and the Sunni Osama bin Laden in the 1990s, not to mention the many pronouncements of their various minions, admirers, and followers. Note that America’s Barbary experience took place well before colonialism entered the lands of Islam, before there were any oil interests dragging the U.S. into the fray, and long before the founding of the state of Israel.

America became entangled in the Islamic world and was dragged into a war with the Barbary states simply because of the religious obligation within Islam to bring belief to those who do not share it. This is not something limited to “radical” or “fundamentalist” Muslims.

Which is not to say that such obligations lead inevitably to physical conflict, at least not in principle. After all peaceful proselytizing among various religious groups continues apace throughout the world, but within the teachings of Islam, and the history of Muslims, this is a well-established militant thread.

The Islamic basis for piracy in the Mediterranean was an old doctrine relating to the physical or armed jihad, or struggle.

To Muslims in the heyday of Barbary piracy, there were, at least in principle, only two forces at play in the world: the Dar al-Islam, or House of Islam, and the Dar al-Harb, or House of War. The House of Islam meant Muslim governance and the unrivaled authority of the sharia, Islam’s complex system of holy law. The House of War was simply everything that fell outside of the House of Islam — that area of the globe not under Muslim authority, where the infidel ruled. For Muslims, these two houses were perpetually at war — at least until mankind should finally embrace Allah and his teachings as revealed through his prophet, Mohammed.

The point of jihad is not to convert by force, but to remove the obstacles to the infidels’ conversion so that they shall either convert or become a dhimmi (a non-Muslim who accepts Islamic dominion) and pay the jizya, or poll tax. The goal is to bring all of the Dar al-Harb into the peace of the Dar al-Islam, and to eradicate unbelief. The Koran also promises rewards to those who fight in the jihad, plunder and glory in this world and the delights of paradise in the next.

Although the piratical activities of Barbary genuinely degenerated over the centuries from pure considerations of the glory of jihad to less grandiose visions of booty and state revenues, it is important to remember that the religious foundations of the institution of piracy remained central.

Even after it became commonplace for the pirate captains or their crew to be renegade Europeans, it was essential that these former Christians “turn Turk” and convert to Islam before they could be accorded the honor of engagement in al-jihad fil-bahr, the holy war at sea.

In fact, the peoples of Barbary continued to consider the pirates as holy warriors even after the Barbary rulers began to allow non-religious commitments to command their strategic use of piracy. The changes that the religious institution of piracy underwent were natural, if pathological. Just as the concept of jihad is invoked by Muslim terrorists today to legitimize suicide bombings of noncombatants for political gain, so too al-jihad fil-bahr, the holy war at sea, served as the cornerstone of the Barbary states’ interaction with Christendom.

In times of conflict, America tends to focus on personalities over ideas or movements, trying to play the man, not the board — as if capturing or killing Osama bin Laden, for example, would instantly end the present conflict. But such thinking loses sight of the fact that ideas have consequences. If one believes that God commands something, this belief is not likely to dissipate just because the person who elucidated it has been silenced. Islam, as a faith, is as essential a feature of the terrorist threat today as it was of the Barbary piracy over two centuries ago.

The Barbary pirates were not a “radical” or “fundamentalist” sect that had twisted religious doctrine for power and politics, or that came to recast aspects of their faith out of some form of insanity. They were simply a North African warrior caste involved in an armed jihad — a mainstream Muslim doctrine. This is how the Muslims understood Barbary piracy and armed jihad at the time, and, indeed, how the physical jihad has been understood since Mohammed revealed it as the prophecy of Allah.

Obviously, and thankfully, not every Muslim is obligated, or even really inclined, to take up this jihad. Indeed, many Muslims are loath to personally embrace this physical struggle. But that does not mean they are all opposed to such a struggle any more than the choice of many Westerners not to join the police force or the armed services means they do not support those institutions.

Whether “insurgents” are fighting in Iraq or “rebels” and “militants” are skirmishing in Chechnya or Hamas “activists” are detonating themselves in Israel, Westerners seem unwilling to bring attention to the most salient feature of all these groups: They claim to be acting in the name of Islam.

It is very easy to chalk it all up to regional squabbles, economic depression, racism, or post-colonial nationalistic self-determinism. Such explanations undoubtedly enter into part of the equation — they are already part of the propaganda that clouds contemporary analysis. But as Thomas Jefferson and John Adams came to learn back in 1786, the situation becomes a lot clearer when you listen to the stated intentions and motivations of the terrorists and take them at face value.

On my travels for the past few days, I have been reading a book which tells the story of a quite astonishing part of British history of which I was previously unaware. In ‘White Gold’, Giles Milton records the appalling details — gleaned,it appears, from a wealth of historical documents including diaries and letters — of a seaborne Islamic jihad against Britain which lasted for no less than two centuries.

From the early seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, thousands of British men women and children were kidnapped by Arab corsairs and sold into slavery in Morocco where they were kept in conditions of unspeakable barbarism. The astounding thing is that these British victims were not merely seized at sea where they ran the gauntlet of such pirates in places such as the Straits of Gibraltar. They were actually abducted from Britain itself.

Corsairs from a place in Morocco called Sale — who became known in Britain as the ‘Sally Rovers’ — sailed up the Cornish coast in July 1625, for example, came ashore dressed in djellabas and wielding damascene scimitars, burst into the parish church at Mount’s Bay and dragged out 60 men women and children whom they shipped off to Morocco. Thousands more Britons were seized from their villages or their ships and dispatched to the hell-holes of the Moroccan slave pens, from where they were forced to work all hours in appalling conditions building the vast palace of the monstrous and psychopathic Sultan, Moulay Ismail, who tortured and butchered them at whim. Most of them perished, but the book records the survival of a tenacious Cornish boy Thomas Pellow, who survived 23 years of this ordeal and whose descendant, Lord Exmouth, finally ended the white slave trade when he destroyed Algiers in 1816.

The book makes clear that this assault upon the British people (and upon Europeans and Americans who were similarly seized) was a jihad. The Sally Rovers, writes Milton, were called ‘al-ghuzat’– the term once used for the soldiers who fought with the Prophet — and were hailed as religious warriors engaged in a holy war against the infidel Christians who were pressurised to convert to Islam under threat of hideous punishment. What is even more striking was the response of the British crown. For almost two centuries, it made only the most ineffectual attempts to rescue its enslaved subjects. Those who had succumbed to the torture and inhumanity of the Sultan and converted to Islam were deemed to be no longer British and therefore outside the scope of any rescue. The pleas of Pellow’s parents were simply brushed aside. Popular outrage forced successive Kings to dispatch a series of feeble emissaries to try to get the Sultan to end this vile traffic and release the slaves, all to no avail.

But this went on for virtually two centuries. For almost 200 years the British state either sat on its hands or wrung them impotently while the Islamic jihad seized, enslaved and butchered its people. And then it appears, this staggering onslaught was all but airbrushed out of our history.

Soon after winning independence from England, the United States faced another war. Muslim pirates operating off North Africa’s Barbary Coast were seizing U.S., as well as European, ships sailing in international waters, holding them for tribute payment or plunder.

In 1786, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, meeting in London with Tripoli’s Muslim ambassador to Britain, inquired as to the reason for such Arab hostility. Acknowledging their attacks were unprovoked, the Tripoli ambassador explained it was their right and duty under the Koran as faithful Muslim followers to plunder and enslave the unfaithful - with those Muslims dying in the process going to paradise. To stop the attacks, the United States initially agreed to pay the Barbary pirates tribute, equal to about 20 percent of government revenues. Only later did an indignant United States launch two wars against them, ending in victory in 1815 and no further payments. European nations, acting individually and collectively, suppressed pirate activity as well, with the French conquest of Algiers in 1830 providing the last nail in the Barbary Pirates’ coffin.

Today, Muslim pirates again sail the seas off Africa’s coast. Mostly Somalis, these pirates have already attacked more than 60 ships this year in the vicinity of the Gulf of Aden - almost 5 times more than occurred all last year. Pirates gain confidence as owners prove willing to pay ransoms for the safe return of ships and crews, much like the United States first did with the Barbary Pirates.

In the capitalist world, a person that works hard has a right to earn more than the others.

In this case, people who have brought financial ruin on their company walk away with Millions

in Bonuses.

Something must be wrong with our system.

I remember 2 years ago when the FORD leadership met, introducing its new C.E.O. who promised to reverse the losses his predecessor made, I thought, another loud mouth shnook.

Two years after, all car companies are on the brink or ruin.

It might not all be their fault, but flying to Washington with Private Jets, and then cry for more funds from the taxpayer is impertinent, to say the least.

Any massive lay-offs will create turmoil, so blackmailing the government is very easy.

President Obama tries to rectify some of the past mistakes, yet resistance from the Republicans is overwhelming as expected.

Any legislation, bill passing becomes a frustrating matter, with Republicans eager to put the blame on President Obama's government.

In the meantime those who managed to rob the Banks and Financial houses sun themselves in the Bahamas and Mexico, and the rest of the crowd is living from unemployment benefits.

It has to be said, people like Madoff do not belong in Park Avenue, they belong into the slammer.

Justice in America has its own arm.

I hope that President Obama 's stimulous package will bring the desired effect on the economy, I am afraid though, the Trillions spent on Iraq ( in Arms contracts ) should have been utilized in a different way.

Bush, Cheney, Rice should be held responsible for their negligence.

This tantamounts to gross negligence in the best case.

Toronto, ON, Canada, — As the U.S. financial meltdown continues in 2009, attention is now directed toward the wider and long-range impact of globalization. In theory, globalization is increasing the mobility of goods, services and capital throughout the world by removing the barriers to free trade and increasing closer integration and the inter-connectedness of national economies.

For the West, that has translated into relocating labor-intensive and smokestack industries to countries where costs are lower. Europe and the United States have envisioned themselves as the world’s bankers, financial masters and influence peddlers – which was great in theory, if only the crooks in the U.S. financial sector had been kept away from the proceeds of globalization.

Since 2001, the United States has been awash with cash. It came from oil-producing Arabs and from the export proceeds of China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and India. That cash found a home in the subprime mortgages that have started the financial meltdown that is pulling the world down.

Europe and the United States were winning the globalization race until 2008, as master bankers handling the export earnings of other states. On the sidelines, China, Asia’s Tiger economies, Brazil and India began generating some cash and technology and building their own economies, leading to rapid increases in their gross national products. However, the benefits did not extend to the rest of Asia, Africa and other less-developed countries.

Ese es el mundo en el que vivimos, el que algunos pretenden perpetuar con planes anti crisis que enterrarán miles de millones para salvar grandes corporaciones financieras y comprar activos sobrevaluados tras las bendiciones de las cumbres de turno. Pero se equivocan. La respuesta a los nuevos tiempos requiere de nuevas políticas, nuevos liderazgos y nuevos comportamientos éticos, incluso a nivel global. No saldremos de esta crisis sin el compromiso y una respuesta a las necesidades energéticas que necesariamente pasan por lograr las máximas cotas de independencia energética. El desarrollo de la energía del hidrógeno, pasando por las alternativas y hasta incluso llegar a la nuclear antes que depender de un petróleo que esclaviza y empobrece a las sociedades y es el principal factor del cambio climático. Además, este nuevo tiempo requiere de una respuesta clara a la mayor tragedia del mundo actual que se llama África, el continente olvidado y condenado a vivir en el hambre, el SIDA y la nada. Una lenta destrucción que contrasta con la codicia de estados y especuladores que compran hoy ingentes cantidades de suelo con los que cultivar los agros combustibles, generar mayores reservas para garantizar sus suministros alimenticios y de papel mientras la mitad del continente se muere de hambre. La ONU ha dado la voz de alerta sobre esta situación en un continente que requiere otras respuestas encaminadas al desarrollo de las personas y de un territorio masacrado por la codicia del llamado mundo desarrollado.

La lucha concertada contra la pobreza y las enfermedades será sin duda una señal de progreso para todos, ya que el desarrollo del llamado tercer mundo será también la garantía de supervivencia del estado de bienestar de los países desarrollados, desde la cooperación. En apenas cincuenta años el mundo en el que vivimos ha multiplicado por cuatro su población y los recursos siguen siendo los mismos, o menos según se mire. El reciclaje será sin duda una necesidad y también uno de los nichos de nuevo empleo, junto al de las energías alternativas, la agricultura ecológica y la cooperación social. Europa debe ser consciente de su enorme responsabilidad a la hora de garantizar una agricultura europea capaz de hacer frente a cualquier crisis alimentaria futura, con garantías de calidad en sus productos para su población y también para atender la demanda creciente. Bruselas debe brindar un apoyo real a los productores y vigilar a quienes utilizan los productos básicos para la especulación. Este nuevo mundo requiere también de respuestas a los enormes problemas del agua y su suministro, desde la solidaridad, el reciclaje continuo y el uso racional, así como una inmigración que demanda mayor cooperación y desarrollo en sus países de origen. La actual crisis es la antesala de un nuevo tiempo, que requiere de nuevas respuestas en las relaciones mundiales, en las alianzas para combatir el terrorismo del hambre o la falta de libertad, de personas y de los pueblos. El presidente electo de EEUU, Barack Obama, es sin duda el inicio de una nueva generación de líderes que deberán dar respuesta a los nuevos retos, siendo conscientes de los errores cometidos en el pasado. Obama ha anunciado un plan para crear 2,5 millones de empleo así como una revolución energética con el aprovechamiento de las energías alternativas y el hidrógeno. También anuncia la retirada de las tropas de Irak en un tiempo máximo de año y medio, entre otras medidas como un plan de salud publica en un país en el que hasta morir es un triste negocio. Obama es consciente también de la importancia del desarrollo de una agricultura por su valor ambiental, de desarrollo local y empleo que permita atender las urgencias alimentarias que se desatan en el mundo y hasta que algún día podamos poner fin a las plagas de hambruna. Son sin duda nuevos tiempos que no solo está en manos de nuestros gobernantes dar respuesta, sino fundamentalmente en nuestros propios comportamientos, en el consumo de agua, de energía, de alimentos saludables, así como la hora de exigir el respeto al medio ambiente e incluso la justicia que merecen nuestros agricultores antes de que sea demasiado tarde.

1. end the dealth penity! it should be life without any patrol or 50 years with 20 years in solitary confindment with no early patrol
2. grant pardons, patrol, or retry political prisoners and either let them go or keep them behind bars
3. subspend all forecloser for 180 days and order all parties involed to redo the payments and terms of the contract
   those who can aford the home keeps it those who can be moved to loans, grants, and payment programs that will aloud them
   to keep their homes get to stay and those who can't keep their homes are moved to apartments or trailers that they can aford.
4. fix the credit and securities market get moneys flowing again to the people not the greedy enforce the regulations!

6. create a national jobs and infrastructure building program now!
7. get rid of laws that prevent people from getting jobs if they commit a crime and have served their time, have low credit, or test positive for drugs or health disablities and vote

Resolving Your Obama Race Dilemma -- How You Got it and Where to Put It

Are you reluctant to vote for Obama because he is black? Hesitant to pull that lever or punch the keyboard even though his ideas and character are compelling? Do you think, if only Hillary had won I wouldn’t have this dilemma? To make matters even worse, are you hesitant to share your latent – and somewhat embarrassing -- uncomfortable feelings with others? Did you grow up in the 1940’s, 50’s or 60’s? If so, your feelings are perfectly understandable, especially if you grew up in a home where equality wasn’t taught. Have you always thought you were an open minded person, yet here you are, surprisingly reluctant to vote for Obama?

Where Were the Black Professionals When You Were Growing Up?

How many black professionals did you encounter growing up? Doctors? Dentists? TV reporters? Police and firemen? Managers? Lawyers? How many black kids were your classmates? Neighbors? Did you meet black kids at summer camp? Did you know that President Woodrow Wilson segregated the federal work force in 1913? And that it and the armed forces were legally segregated until Harry Truman issued two executive orders on July 26, 1948? Did you know that Truman’s now famous low approval ratings in 1948 – before Korea and firing Macarthur -- were due partially to his civil rights activism? Truman was furious when he learned in 1946 that Isaac Woodard, a black serviceman in uniform, returning home from the war, was blinded by a beating inflicted by police in South Carolina. His bus driver complained that Woodard caused trouble by asking the driver to stop so he could relieve himself. Besides that, Truman was the first president to address the NAACP in 1947.

Did you have relatives who told you blacks were dumb, lazy, and good for nothing? That’s what an uncle told my good friend Dennis in Tennessee in the 1950’s. When Dennis came home and told his mom he met the niggers, his school teacher mom was furious. She set Dennis straight and banned the uncle from her home. Dennis clearly remembers being taken around a poor black community and receiving the racist indoctrination from his uncle. “Dennis, these are niggers, and this is how they live. “ If his mom hadn’t sternly told him his uncle was full of crap, Dennis could be experiencing a similar dilemma. Dennis wound up marrying a black woman. They have three adorable teenage girls and are still married.

My mom drummed equality into my soft head. In the 1950’s my mom told me about a black singer named Marian Anderson who was not allowed to perform in Washington’s Constitution Hall in 1939 by its owners, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) , because she was black. It was one of the earliest incidents that brought racial discrimination to our attention. Where We Were and Where We Are Today -- From Slavery to Obama

Due to many factors, the black people you encountered growing up were probably maids, factory hands, garbage men, and laborers. They lived in segregated run down communities on the wrong side of the tracks. They spoke funny slang, hung around together, ate weird foods like collard greens, weren’t seen at the restaurants your folks ate in – except as busboys and waiters – BUT they were easily identified by their color.

So how did all this happen, and why in 2008 is our society suddenly chock-a -block with black professionals? Go to any school now and you will see black teachers, administrators, and principals – not just janitors. Go shopping and you will meet black supervisors. Buy a car, insurance, or clothes and you will often see black personnel. Turn on your TV and there is a black anchor or expert being interviewed in his area of expertise, which is not race relations.

And most intriguingly, why did many African students studying here in the 1980’s and 90’s return to Africa and tell me they had more white friends than black ones on campus? Why were black Africans readily accepted into white social circles when black Americans were either excluded or segregated themselves into all black dorms?

To get to the bottom of this, and to get you off the hook, let’s return to how black people wound up living on the wrong side of the tracks and how in 2008, many more of them are your neighbors or workmates. What in world changed? Why do kids of all colors in my son’s high school eat lunch together in 2008?

Blacks were the only group that came here involuntarily, in chains. They were captured by rival black tribesmen and sold to Arabs who subsequently sold them to slave dealers. Coming from different tribes, most of the slaves couldn’t even communicate with each other in a common language. Thousands of slaves from all over Africa converged in the American south and didn’t even share a common language or history. They were ripped away from their familiar world and, unlike prisoners of war, couldn’t even talk to each other initially. They weren’t allowed to learn how to read, write, or even swim.

They eventually had kids, but these kids could never be taught the legends or stories that make up a culture. They lacked the fundamental accouterments of culture that include shared beliefs, art, language, institutions, manners, dress, religion, rituals, and so forth. All they knew was the plantation and their narrow world. So when freed from slavery in 1865, they had no skills, capital, land, or even literacy. Their real culture was agriculture – plus what they created as slaves. They had the slang they created and, of course, each other. Since whites gave them few responsibilities, they developed few skills and consequently had the reputation of being lazy, shiftless, and dumb. They learned to believe they were inferior -- and often reinforced that stereotype by acting commensurately.

Imagine for a moment how that gets into your head. Most of what we become as adults is tattooed onto our soft brains as toddlers. My mom used examples to teach me that all people were equal. Having the term inferior branded onto your character often relegates a person to life’s junk heap. Ambition and dreams are snuffed out. People who define themselves as being not good or smart enough just shuffle along life’s paths. They don’t feel they can succeed, so often don’t even try.

If you think the effects of slavery and segregation have vanished, you are wrong. I recently chatted with a racially mixed mom – her dad was white mom black – at a football game both our kids were playing in. We started chatting about where we were from. She was from Louisiana so I asked about segregation in the 1950’s.

“My dad made me lay down on the rear floor of our car when we stopped to eat. I wasn’t allowed to go inside so he’d buy my favorite food and bring it to our car.” So imagine growing up and not being allowed to have a fun vacation meal with our parents on the way your Florida vacation. From the day she was born, society told her she wasn’t good enough to enter public facilities in her home state. And do these feelings trickle down to her 16 year old son in 2008? Probably.

After slavery ended, blacks had freedom FROM, not freedom TOO. Since they had no access to the adequately funded schools we white kids attended by the accidents of our births, they never learned the essential survival and social skills we white kids acquired naturally. Their segregated educations were inferior; they were banned from attending the flagship state universities in the south until 1962 when James Meredith was escorted to class at the University of Mississippi by federal marshals.

During the hundred years from emancipation in 1863 to 1962, black people just shuffled around generally carrying out jobs immigrants perform today. Consequently they banded together for community and self preservation. They lived in segregated communities, founded black churches and over 100 black universities and colleges, developed their own way of speaking English, and lived in an inferior parallel society.

Results of School Integration and the Civil and Voting Rights Acts Are Huge

The civil rights movement sprung out of the black churches in the 50’s and 60’s. This led, after much bloodshed, to the civil and voting rights bills being passed in the mid 1960’s. Prior to the voting rights act of 1965, many blacks were excluded from voting due to poll taxes, literacy tests, and residency requirements that were applied only to black voters, particularly in the south. That was barely two generations ago! When the Civil and Voting Rights bills were passed in 1964 and 65 and the Supreme Court ruled segregation was unconstitutional in 1954, the doors of limited privilege began to creak open.

As these doors opened in the 1950’s and 60’s, blacks began slowly entering mainstream society. In the 1970’s and 80’s we began seeing black reporters on TV and some blacks were featured in TV commercials. More and more black faces were seen on college campuses. Yes, many felt insecure and kept to themselves. Many had congenital inferiority complexes caused by lying on the floors of cars and being banned from selected business and public places, like bath rooms and schools. They also knew from their parents that keeping a low profile was a survival skill. Who wanted to wind up lynched like Emmet Till?

Now, just 46 years after James Meredith integrated Ole Miss, 20% of the student population there is composed of students from minority groups. Most surprisingly and positively, the university sponsored the prestigious first presidential debate this season. And who could have imagined in 1962 that this would occur and that one of the major candidates would be black? Black professionals are in every profession and serve all customers, not just blacks.

Beneath Our Radar, Dynamic Shifts are Taking Place in Schools Today

Folks my age just shake our heads in bewildered awe. It happened again yesterday at another football game on a glorious afternoon. I chatted with a well dressed white woman – native Houstonian -- from an oil services company.

As helmets loudly cracked on the field, we discussed Obama and, more importantly, how much racial mixing there was at both our high schools. She was astonished that her son once dated a black girl without the slightest sense of scandal or tittle-tattle. According to her son, kids of all colors shared lunch table in the cafeteria, and there was no racial tension. She was also astounded that these changes were occurring out of the blue and beneath her radar.

My son’s school is 30 percent each black, brown, white, and 10 percent Asian. They hang around together, enjoy the same lousy music, and don’t cluster in segregated groups. Looking at the legs of the football players from the stands provides a vision of the new America – every shade of human color is represented. It is the same watching 3000 kids as they stream out of school in the afternoon, chattering away in diverse groups. And when I ask my son about racism – he is mixed – he sighs and says “Dad that is such an old school question.” I don’t even ask any more.

Black accents are fading as more and more blacks enter mainstream society and worry more about their job prospects, portfolios, and retirements than racism. Parents of racially mixed kids (me) are dumbfounded and thrilled that the racism I anticipated when my little girl was born in 1986 never materialized. Problems arose more from selected black peers who felt there should be black solidarity. Like my African friends experienced, the racism came from the blacks, not the whites.

This occurred amongst some old-school Blacks when Obama initially declared his candidacy. Some blacks felt because he didn’t grow up in the ghetto he wasn’t a legitimate black person. They slowly came around, but initially there was much skepticism and resentment. Finally many realized that their sacrifices paved the way for an Obama to emerge.

Relax, Your Racial Dilemma is Normal

But you are still reluctant to vote for him. I understand. When you were growing up and learning how the world worked, blacks weren’t your peers at all. They did the mindless drudge and dirty work. They were aliens; a visible underclass. And because of their color – unlike similarly unschooled working class whites – they were easily identified. Hence, it was normal to chant, “Eeny meeny miney moe, catch a nigger by the toe.” Or to ask, “How far did you chase a nigger for that tie?” Then there were those familiar playground terms from the popular song “Colored Spade” 1960’s musical Hair. I’m a Colored spade, a nigger, black nigger, jungle bunny Jigaboo, coon, Pickaninny, mau mau,
Uncle Tom, Aunt Jemima, Little Black Sambo, Cotton pickin, 'Swamp guinea, junk man, Shoeshine boy,
Elevator operator, Table cleaner at Horn & Hardart, Slave, voodoo, Zombie, Ubangi lipped,
Flat nose, Tap dancin' Resident of Harlem…”

When you saw a fellow white person, you had no idea who he was, where he came from, or what he stood for, especially if he dressed appropriately. There were many poor whites, but their skin bestowed immunity on them. They blended in and did not have the stigma of coming to America as involuntary slaves. No one owned their great grandparents.

Since your impression of blacks was forged prior to blacks entering mainstream society, those old programs are still running in the background of your brain. And that is as normal as all the other values you picked up as a kid like rooting for your favorite sports team, liking a certain food, or knowing hard work is a virtue. You grew up seeing black people as chronic underachievers. Of course many were. They had no access to the institutions you accessed due to the lucky accident of your birth.

It Is Class, Not Color

These negative ideas do not automatically make you a racist. Now I’ll demonstrate that you really aren’t racist after all. When I quizzed African students who studied here, some mentioned that American blacks often gave them an ultimatum. Don’t hang out with whites. Choose us or them! If you hang out with whites you will not be welcome in our black society. A black girlfriend I had in 1979 when in grad school received the same treatment from her black peers. “Why are you dating a white boy? Aren’t we good enough?

It eventually dawned on me that racism was a socioeconomic phenomenon. And people were “racist” only because blacks stood out like sore thumbs due to their color. But why were Africans welcomed into white society, why did they readily accept the friendship of their white peers, and why didn’t they care about the threats they received from black Americans? One Somali friend of mine even hung out at a redneck country bar in Michigan where he was the only black person. He went because he liked the music and it was the easiest place to pick up girls. “And the redneck guys?” I asked. “I was polite, sized up the situation, wasn’t pushy, and gradually got to know everyone and became a regular. No one cared that I went home with white girls. They even asked around if I missed a few days.”

Soon I realized that the Africans were middle to upper class kids who had much more in common with middle to upper class white kids on campus than they did with black students who grew up in poor segregated communities . It was culture that mattered, not color. The Africans never defined people by color. They discriminated instead by tribe. Where they came from, everyone was black. Consequently they had little in common with black American students, aside from their shared skin color. The American blacks were yet another alien tribe to them – and a subservient one at that! Color counted for nothing, just like white skin is not the number one catalyst for white bonding.

The Africans were never denied anything in their home countries due to race. So they naturally hung out with their social class peers, white middle class kids. Few reported any racial problems in the 15-20 years I posed the question. They knew some of their most brutal repressive dictators, like Idi Amin from Uganda and Mengistu from Ethiopia, were black.

Now You Can Vote For Barack

And your perceived racism? A myth. You just want to hang out with your peers and don’t want to spend time with people you have little in common with. Since African students and white kids shared a common class background, they were well matched -- far better than black Americans whose criteria for friendship were based on shared discrimination and color. Black Americans and black Africans shared little in common at all, just pigment. Hence the reluctance of the African students to be friends with them just because they shared a common color.

Back to Barack. You are attracted to him. You like his message of hope. You admire how he took withering fire over Reverend Wright and survived. He is battle tested. You also recognize that McCain clumsily stumbles from issue to issue and has a weak grasp of economics. He said the fundamentals of our economy were strong, and then abruptly reversed himself just fours later. You like Obama’s choice for vice-president and think McCain used poor judgment and acted impulsively and irresponsibly when he chose Sarah Palin. You thought when McCain suspended his campaign it was a gimmick. You worry about your retirement, yet McCain offers no solutions. And you know you would vote for Obama in a heartbeat if only he were white.

Obama is black. But he is a 2008 Black man, not a 1948 model. But after just two generations of many blacks having access to the same institutions we attend, look what happened. In an amazingly short time, racism is vanishing from our kids. There are black professionals in every field. And that was just what Lyndon Johnson and civil rights leaders hoped for and anticipated in the 1960’s when the civil and voting rights bills were passed. The idea was that once the doors of opportunity were thrown open to all citizens, discrimination and racism would slowly fade away. And that is exactly what is happening in many of our schools today. Johnson also predicted that his civil rights legislation would set the Democratic Party back at least 25 years. He was absolutely right. The republicans capitalized on white resentment. Nixon’s southern strategy in 1968 was a wink and an approving nod to the racists. The message was, we understand your resentment towards civil rights legislation, and we support you. The South then flipped from voting democratic since reconstruction, to voting for the party of Lincoln, the GOP.Due to Supreme Court decisions and congressional legislation, blacks are represented in all professions. Black people have been elected as mayors of major cities since the1960’s. And now a black candidate is running for president.&nbs

Hi,

I'm an Angolan (African) black man in my 40's that loves the USA and is proud of them. I look forward to an Obama's win and that the American policies and hence the world change for the better. In 2000 I was working at USAID in my hometown Luanda and hoping for an Al Gore win; unfortunately that did not happen and the World is leaving on the most darkness times I have memory. As many people around the World and America I have my doubts on how 9/11 could have happened in a country with such intelligency services and seeing the way the World leaned after that explains a lot of things to me.

Hopefully, God does exist and I am looking forward to a new prosper era - the dawn of the Barack Obama's era. As most of the people in the World that favour him I am anxious for the wealthier hopefull times he'll bring from November 4th.

Fellow Americans, Congolese and Friends of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire),

I'm Franklin Katunda, community leader and organizer. Since 2001 I'm been president and editor of the Congoboston Network --that helps thousands of African immigrants to social networking online and through events. I learned about Senator Barack Obama after the 2004 DNC Convention, have learned about his judgement and character during his US Senate during the War in Iraq. I endorsed Barack Obama for US Senate Re-election in December of 2006 after he adressed my "Class of 2006" at the Universirty of Massachusetts-Boston. I did not know he was going to run for the higher office, but I have watched his US senate's moves to pass bills working with both sides of the aisles and ... I discovered the Man's mind.

I knew Obama is the "Man with the Plan", not a follower! Now, soon as he announced his candidacy in February of 2007, It was easy for me to back someone that I as a role model, a leader, a charismatic visionary; young and refreshing politician like I would like to be. I knew which candidate, against all odds of backing a least experienced candidate, to choose from Clinton, Biden, Dodd, Edwards bids, and I decided to believe and to back Barack Obama (D. Illinois) in the 2007 pre-primaries.

Currently I am a Non-paid Field Organizer, and an Online Group Coordinator; I am working on an ambitious current project to rally a voter's registration that supports and raises awarness in politics from newly African Naturalized US-Citizens. I work in campaigning for and in helping to elect Barack Obama as President of the United States of America. This year has been busy for us since the launch of the campaign in February of 2007, so we put our Congoboston's activities on hold to make sure the Illinois Senator is elected "President of the United States of America", first.

Why Barack Obama? Well, it is not because he is running for office and has a better chance at winning, but because the United States of America is seen and wanted as a strong ally by African countries, and particularly to the Congo. (Second), because among all US Senators from the 109th US Congress, Democrat Senator, Barack Obama is the only one who dared to introduce a bill that was passed and signed into law to require the Bush Administration to eefectively act on protecting the new Congolese Nation's choice of governance.

After a five years period of civil war and a coslty, unprepared and yet rigged election in 2006 in Congo, the US Senate and US House's bill was needed in DC to ensuring the welfare of not less than 40 millions of desperate Congolese, entrapped in a series of civil wars and social misery, as a result of a four decades reign of Mobutu. This is a vast and war-torn country that continues to provide to US and European Corporations tons of minerals such as the Coltan, the Uranium, the Cupper, Diamonds, and Gold. The Congo produces also a dozen of more unheard of minerals (exploited even during the recent killings that resulted in the loss of more than 5 million souls. In December 2006 when the bill was introduced, passed and signed into law, Senator Barack Obama, works in a bi-partisan way to make sure this bill also called the " S.2125" : Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act of 2006, could be used by both the Executive Branch of the US government and Congress as a test piece to measure how the Bush foreign affairs' cabinet would handle this country's fate. The bill tells where the US stands in its diplomatical efforts to help to prosperity and peace in Congo. Response: The US government has done almost nothing since 2006 to ensure the bill was acted upon. The War (another insurrection) has started again in the eastern Congo, President Kabila of Congo has violated human rights on numerous occasions; his operatives (army, security agencies and presidential guards) continue to persecute and/ or to murder opposition leaders; Congolese protests are being shut out, when manifestants are being killed at every occasion without our embassy getting involved in checking facts; More than ever, I strongly believe that the future of this vast country in the heart of Africa is on the 2008 US presidential ballot.

Facts About US- DR Congo Foreign Affairs

The Bush GOP Cabinet had all the diplomatical tools to run a better foreign policy in regards to the DRC, [ ...and we had not need to sit with "hostile" leaders in order to save these innocent lives], but acted timidly, according to most US and Congo's politicians, newsmedia makers and well-informed human rights and citizen's networks in the DRC and here in US. How do we know it? Check facts on the ground: The Democratic Republic of Congo has plunged once again (September 2008) into another civil unrest in the eastern region where thousands of citizens are being bodily-mutilated with machettes and displaced by dissident troops of the war lord and domestic terrosist; Sir Nkunda Batware.

This man is well-known for his fame in killings and terrorism on civilians by the US State Department's African Affairs Office in Washington DC; His prouesses are well-acknowledged by the UN's Mission and its "Bush Friend" Mission's coordinator -- Mr William Swing. Yet Kunda Batware is being ignored by our embassy officials while he should be arrested as he is the most dangerous war criminal to be "deported" to the the Hague's Court. This former rebel and Kagame's army dissident is backed by current authorities of Rwanda (Congo eastern-border neighboring country). Amazingly, Sir Batware has been a close friend and a former political ally to the current Congo's president Joseph Kabila. [Bush supports Kabila who made it to the White House for official visits more than twice in less than four years of Bush re-elect term in the Oval Office.] Both Congolese President Kabila and Rwanda's president Kagame (another beloved-Bush ally in North Eastern Africa's region) have not done enough to crack down on dissident Nkunda Batware's operatives in the Kivu Eastern Region of the Congo; a pre-condition in restoring peace and democracy in Congo, and to ensure welfare of citizens in the region.

How long are we going to count our failed US diplomacy deeds, while a clear foreign policy was pushed by a known US senator on a bi-partisan way? Why do we have to continue another four years-period of uncertainty in the Congo if the United States has a chance to elect democrat candidate to wipe the republican failure? When issues of lack of consistency and involvment in our relationships with African countries are clearly established in the current GOP agenda -- the Congo has been flagged as a threat to national security and our strategic position in Africa. Congo is a strong ally to the US since the 60s when the country became politically independent from the Belgian Kingdom.

The DR Congo had aligned itself as one of the most pro-American philophical "stronghold" in Central Africa for three decades while the country has been surrounded by socialist colors; (pro-former USSR, pro-China, pro-North Korea and even ... because of its African roots, pro-Cuba) .... The regime of Kinshasa has resisted ideals and ties to African military regimes in countries like its neighbors: the people's republic of Congo-Brazzaville, the people's republic of Angola and some left progressist leaders such as the Zambian president Kaunda (in South) or the mighty President Machel of Mocambique; far the Congo secured America's presence in southern Sudan in efforts to stop the Khartum socialist agenda, their push in Ethiopia, Guinea and so forth etc...

The Congo ( known as Zaire) has been a reliable US "pied-a-terre", serving as a US military runway (the Kamina military base) to face and to deter both the rise of a communist ideology during the 30 years long civil in the war-torn country of Angola (South-Western border) and to help the US diplomacy to reign in isolating and rallying other African countries in the region to help end the threat to human rights, segregation and racism in the South Africa's Racist White-Supremacist regime of Peter Botha.

Minerals and components used in most US weaponry and the world's telecommunication devices are put together for decades with resources extracted from the Congo's soil. Congo has offered a best terrain to most US Presidents like Jimmy Carter (D), Ronald Reagan (R), Bush Sr (R) and Bill Clinton (D) to execute very complicated but vital national security decisions in regard to the stabiltity of Africa, by establising our intelligence in the region, a competitive market and intelligence strategy that helped the US to compete with Europe and Asia. The sin about our relationship with Africa, and for this case the DR Congo, is that we often benefited from all of the above for a less sustainable cooperation tools of diplomacy in regard to how African leaders offer a better governance, a sound fiscality, and the observance of citizens' human rights.

No doubt the DR Congo should remain a strong US ally in the Central African region where the French and the Belgians did nothing to disengage the "former" Soviets-aligned "Eastern-European Regimes" to establish their strong holds and networks in Africa. Now How in the world, with today's rise of another Russia's "impulse" with Georgia and its attempts to raise fears of an imminent "cold war", are we going to afford another war-torn Congo in the midle of Africa?

Distabilized - the Congo still produces tons of extractions of its massive "Uranium", very essential to make nuclear weaponry. That we cannot afford... remaining silent in America after it has been established that many Al-Qaeda and other terrorist operatives have been seeking to exploit and engage in illicit trade of these highly dangerous materials that can provide them with real weapons of mass destruction. The world knows it, President Bush does and Congress (with what I call Obama bill) warns it too!

Breaking the Silence (0n the behalf of Congo)

Many NGOs and associations around the world are observing a "Seven-Days" or the "Congo's Week". It is an Awarness Campaign with a theme: BREAKING THE SILENCE on the behalf of the DR Congo across the US and around the world. They have gotten the attention of several media cells in Western countries: France, Belgium, US, Australia etc to learn and advocate for the Congo, at least by talking about theese atrocities that took place when elections are taking place in US. I cannot tell you enough how important and timely right it has been for US citizens who long for justice, equality and peace and the world; for those US-born Congolese, Americans and Friends of the Congo to rein in with their vote and support only "15 days" left before the 2008 elections to pass on this message. With this November 4th's Countdown to US elections, let all remember that the 109th Congress in its Democratic Majority with the help of 12 senators: 4 prominent Republicans and 8 Democrats had joined to co-sponsor a bill initiated by Senator B. Obama (D, Illinois). This 2006 bill had unanimousely (with few amendments and fewer objections) passed, and was signed into law to ensure better foreign policy , security, development, better governance in the Congo, and yet "nothing" consistent [ in other words "just a little"] has been done to follow through.

One among our failed approaches in diplomacy with AFRICA

The GOP's last eight years continues to prophecy without actions for the US to rely on the Department of State's reports and on our European Allies' out-of-touch lines of diplomacy towards Africa; our current foreign service envoys are still using those heavily-biased and politically-partisan lines of policies that are ( ... as old as Pres. Nixon's talking points on African Affairs; demoded in their essence like the pre-Berlin Reagan's views on our relationships with Africa; our policies have been much of the former French president Mitterand's philophy; he forecasted a "pro-but-fake" democratic way of governance in Africa) -- And no wonder we cannot be relevant in solving most crisis in Africa where the United States have common strategic and national security interests as the Europeans, but where we still lagging in being equally involved economically like the Europeans are, and even the Chinese, the Russians and South-Koreans have been.

The US cannot afford being less politically and diplomatically involved in Africa in 2008, and expect our relationships to be economically sound in trades and to earn respect from the African People. News stories and real facts on the ground show that the Russians, the Chinese, and even South-Africans are developing sound trade deals and back-door deals with or without the Congo's approval in its soil. All this is happening far ahead of Washington's less aggressive approach in its African Affairs agenda. We are talking about the Congo in a vast continent, the one Historian Frantz Fanon said: (Africa) "...It has the map-shape of a gun with its trigger located in the Congo"

He was right because like I said before, the strategic plan to position in the region comes a sustained stability, peace and democracy in the Congo. This is an African country where, if there is not a strong leadership in Washington DC, our national security interests in the region will be in a permanent danger for real. Congo's strategic location on the Africa's regional map is economically a better market to engage and invest in, and with respect to the US intelligence and our military overahaul strategies in the region, the next president of the USA should do better than "all" his predecessors.

Change We Need in our relations with AFRICA

Where have we been all this time? Good question. I will tell you what? We always have developped that mentality that to deal with Africans, we ought to be careful on who (public officials) we send out to carry the message in Africa; we are always careful in choosing our "envoys", we emphasize on their ethnic and religious backgrounds; we base our selection of diplomats or State departments Officers on what is their knowledge of the region as we anticipate "wrongly" that our African counterparts (presidents, royalties or their ministers) would line up with how Europeans lines of diplomacy would dictate our stance, given the history of Africa colonists in the 1960s. For e.g. countries like Portugal, Spain, England, France, and even smaller numbers of Germans and Italian adventureers in Africa have marked their foot-prints, cultural landmarks and have shaped political philosophies in Africa.

In 2008, just like in other continents where colonists have no longer dictate the way business should be conducted, countries and territories like Hong-Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Brasil, India and many other lands where colonists left their foot prints, citizens and their government decided to "admit" they are ready to be on their own, and to embrace new ideas, new horizons, new opportinities -- to launch new markets of the 21th century. What Can the US do at this point? It is the role of the USA, I believe, to engage a new quality diplomatic approach that restores confidence from the African People's stand point. The US have to guarantee two aspects with a new and successful diplomacy tactic in its relationship with Africa: Engaging in Economic and Strategic Security Initiatives in the Continent and to Restoring democracy and a regulated and fiscally-sustained system of governance.

The African Affairs Office at the Department of State ( during the next Obama Administration) should actively work in exploring ways to offer "sticks and carrots" to hold African leaders "accountable" to respect of their signed-and-agreed upon treaties, their local politics dealings and issue promises, their binding bi-lateral agreements with the United States. We should compete with other countries like China, South-Korea or Argentina where African leaders are NOT being asked much to qualify in dealings. Economically speaking , it is about securing America, in one hand, our trades and investments' operatives (guarantying peace and stability) for "highly" profitable African markets. On the other hand, the US should ensure civil liberties are respected, they should reward fiscally-sound governance and encourage the enactment of national laws that promote the eradication of the culture of corruption as a way to monitor the improvement, to re-enforce the laws and ensure the respect of rule of law overahaul, as the 2006 Congo's "Obama Bill" outlined.

Besides many other failures to enforcing our treaties and bi-lateral accords in the African Affairs office at the Department of State, there are these US Governemt's weak actions that did not do much US initiative to Africans in terms of reenforcing the presence with the peace corps, humanitarian organizations and educational and relief organizations on the ground to work with local networks that canvass their communities.

The US should engage pre-emptively the health and human services approach in Africa in order to prevent diseases, pandemies and better nutrition for the population. To denounce and to stop adverse trends in ways of governance that leed to recent African Nation's cases of Genocide, such as Darfour (In Sudan) , Rwanda and the Eastern-Congo. Our relationships with African Leaders have to go beyond just helping them to stay capable militarly but to offer them logistic assistance when it comes to dealing with conflict resolution of hot national topics.

Our embassies in Africa should double efforts like do their couterparts in middle-eastern regions with bi-cultural and bi-lingual envoys to deal with and to clearly decongest the national political apparatus in every country where foreign service officers are assigned to. We need to learn how culture, history and tribal aspirations can shape and benefit US present and future relationships; they have to be active, as intelligence becomes available, to not only report, but to repudiate violations of human rights and to work in these countries' educational settings. Our cooperation in education should promote an agenda that eradicate sentiments of hate and philosopies that oppose the US...

The US should assist and reward only those countries that offer a progress report with fiscally-sound ways of governance; the observance of democracy and human rights. They haven't been doing so in the last decades, because we buy into fallacious French "Mitterand" ideas that because there: "... was election in a given African country, means that country's regime is "democratic".

It's Time to Turn the Page !

The 2008 elections is a time to change course in our foreign policy and to recognize our moral and historical responsibility in regards to Africa; It is an opportunity to raise awarness to the facts that the US has crucial need of a solid "diplomatic machine", made of a new generation of effective "foreign service" officials, effective appointed-government officials, foreign affairs officers in DC and in our consulates. Paramount, the US should show a stronger leadership in the White House that will level with a better diplomacy and will apply a "Peace-and-Democracy" philosophy versus the current "Our interest-Only" approach in Africa.

Like never before there is a need of a US President and an Administration in DC that hold a pro-democracy and human rights-compliant agenda in Africa. Senator Barack Obama (author of S. 2521) has the record to prove it, maybe did not articulate much about it, but worse John McCain never been vocal (not even once) for such an agenda in Africa. He won't do it, won't promise he would look into it. We can't even hold him accountable in doing some thing about it because I doesn't KNOW much about !

Barack Obama is the only alternative to save millions of lives who die in civil conflicts, of diseases and pandemies, of lack of economic development, because of political persecutions or ethnic cleansing! I will be launching a "MySpace Outreach Page" to continue rally efforts from Americans, Congolese-Americans, Africans, Friends of the Congo and Organizations that work for peace, prosperity and the economic development of this nation. We want to help solidify and organize thousands more entities for this humanitarian cause.

I believe that Africa and the Congo's fate are definetely tied to the outcome of the US Presidential Elections.

Broward County could/will offset the physical geography advantage of the conservatives in Florida (Broward County had risen to almost 1.8 million people, and increased by 10.1% between April 1, 2006 and July 1, 2006. Similarly, the assorted versions of pan-Arabism — Nasserism, Ba’ athism — were seen as alternatives to Islam, when in fact they were not alternatives at all. They merely displayed, for quite specific and local reasons, an emphasis on “Uruba” or Arabdom that was explicable given the impoverished state of the “Islamic world” and the fact that there were local stumbling blocks to pan-Islamism (including the lack of financial wherewithal). In Turkey Kemalists were in control; in Iran there was the Shah, trying in his maladroit way to emphasize the pre- Islamic past. Pan-Arabism was a version of pan-Islamism, a subset, which at the time seemed to be as much as one could hope for. Nasser or Saddam Hussein could dream of being King of the Arabs, but the idea of a much bigger operation, especially since for both Nasser and Saddam Hussein the most dangerous political opposition was mosque-based (the Muslim Brotherhood for Nasser, the Shi’a clerics for Saddam Hussein), was out of the question.

Syrian Liberal Nidhal Na’isa On the West, Pan-Arabism, Islamism, and Al-Jazeera

Syrian liberal author Nidhal Na’isa began his career in journalism as a teenager, at the government dailies Al-Thawra and Syria Times,(1) but today he is a vocal opponent of the Arab regimes and the pan-Arab ideology, as well as of Islamism and Islamist terrorism. He has written that due to the Islamist “tsunami,” the Middle East could be declared an “intellectual disaster zone”; that if one were to try to sell pan- Arab identity to “the bushmen and the cannibals” they wouldn’t buy it; and that the pan-Arab media is “a harbinger of ill, pain, and destruction.” In contrast, he praises the West for its humanism and its respect for the individual, and writes that, given the current state of affairs in the Arab world, the real question is not “why does the West hate us?” but rather why it does not.

The following are excerpts from some of Nidhal Na’isa’s recent articles:

“We Could Declare [The Middle East] an Intellectual Disaster Zone After the Surging Fundamentalist Tsunami Swept Through”

In an interview published April 23, 2007 on the liberal Arab website Aafaq, Na’isa discussed the Islamist phenomenon:

“The world is swept up in globalization, whereas our unfortunate regions are being swept up everywhere by fundamentalism. We could declare [the Middle East] an intellectual disaster area after the surging fundamentalist tsunami swept through it.

“This is a wave that came after the slaughter, on the debris of the failure and disintegration of the leftist pan-Arab projects, [when] their intellectual hollowness and the superficiality of their proposals... became evident...

“Fundamentalism is a notion that disturbs the sleep of everybody concerned with the present and the future of this region. All of us are fundamentalists, when fundamentalism is taken in the sense of tenacious clinging to [our] opinion and rejection of the other. I see fundamentalism on the faces of all, in their thoughts and proposals. Nobody comes to terms with the other; no one pays attention to anyone else. In my view, this is fundamentalism in its more important and fuller meaning...”

“In Our Totalitarian Societies... Leaving [the Fold of] Collective Thought is Considered Error, Heresy, and Atheism”

When asked about the phenomenon of increasing religiosity in Syria, Na’isa said that it was part of “the spread of the culture of the herd and ‘group’ thinking, which means the negation of the individual and the individual’s importance in creation, development, and originality.”

He continued: “Western civilization was founded on unleashing individual initiative and glorification of individual reason – and not collective reason, which is generally emotive and not of sound judgment.

“In our totalitarian societies, the collective ‘I’ prevails over the individual ‘I,’ and all become equals under the podiums of the [Islamic] jurisprudents. Leaving [the fold of] collective thought is considered error, heresy, and atheism...”

Na’isa’s praise for the West does not, however, extend to current U.S. policy in the region, which he feels has been counterproductive and has fed extremism: “Much of the religiosity in our societies is based on the principle ‘not out of love for ‘Ali, but in order to spite Mu’awiya,’ [i.e.] in order to spite the current regimes, and in order to goad George Bush and the U.S., which acts in a reckless, thoughtless, and foolish manner, and, through its policies, increases the strength of this [fundamentalist] current...

“So long as the [Syrian] nationalist opposition forces remain repressed and banned, and religious activity is the sole [kind of activity] permitted and tolerated, many will see in it a shelter for the expression of... their identities as [people who] reject the Arab constellation of despotism...”

The Syrian Media is “A Mongoloid Child, Retarded and Underdeveloped”

In the interview, Na’isa draws a clear distinction between past heroes of resistance to colonialism and those whom the modern Arab media crowns as martyrs:

“It goes without saying, and is clear to anyone with eyes to see, that there is a distinction between [on the one hand] someone who ends a life full of human giving and sacrifice... and who worked for a noble and lofty goal, and [on the other hand] someone with a black history... The lying pan-Arabist, Islamist-propagandist media will never succeed in creating saints and martyrs out of slaughterers, butchers, and hired killers...

“The hypocritical pan-Arab hissing [i.e. the pan-Arab media]... has poisoned our lives and turned them into a cheap lie.... The viper, before it bites, emits a hissing sound, which is a harbinger of ill, pain, and destruction.”

Na’isa said of the Syrian media in particular that it is “a mongoloid child, retarded and underdeveloped.”(2)

“In Truth, I Think That Those Wicked ‘Infidels’ Love Us More Than We Hate Them”

On April 22, 2007, Nidhal Na’isa published an article on the liberal Arab website Elaph titled “Why Don’t They Hate Us?” in which he lampooned the Islamists’ anti-West discourse:

“A great part of the fiery, devout, [Islamic] revivalist discourse... is based on [the claim] that the ‘infidel’ West is our mortal archenemy, that it hates us with the greatest hatred, and that it does not let any opportunity pass for hatching conspiracies and striking at us.

“[It is also based on the claim] that all of the backwardness, misery, deterioration, decline, defeats, and baseness currently present in the Arab and Muslim worlds are due to an uninterrupted flood of machinations on the part of those evil infidels. [The claim is] that they target our religion and our being because they have no religion, and because we are better than them in Allah’s view, and that they envy us for this very reason.

“[The Islamists claim] that we are a great source of concern for [the West], and that we are their sole preoccupation and fear, and that the green [i.e. Islamic] ‘giant’ is ambushing them with its extraordinary capabilities of poverty, hunger, corruption, despotism, ignorance, prisons, delusion, superstitions, and preachers.

“[According to the Islamists, Islam] is, for this reason, the only one capable of destroying Western civilization, defeating it on its home ground, and wiping it out of existence through ‘a few explosive belts’ that do nothing other than kill and target Arab and Muslim children and their innocent blood.

“[They say that] the mother of all decisive [battles] – the fateful war with the atheist, sinful infidels – passes by way of those innocents, and that if it were not for accursed Israel, wicked America, the infidels, and the descendants of apes and pigs that lie in wait for us night and day, our countries and homelands would be like Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, and Oslo... When Allah rids us of those wicked, accursed people, we will live in tranquility and bliss, and live happily ever after, and we will have offspring, and girls whom we will dress in chadors, veils, and hijabs.

“But in truth... I think that those wicked ‘infidels’ love us much more than we hate them. If it were not for them, life would be transformed into hell and fire.”

“London Has Become a Safe Haven for Fundamentalists Fleeing the Hell of Middle Eastern Despotism”

“[The West] has contributed greatly – through material aid, technical expertise, and advisory assistance – to many of the amenities of life we enjoy. Tens of millions of humans have benefited from the West’s achievements in the sciences, and Western universities have opened [their doors] to the multitudes of students arriving from all countries of the world.

“They have granted citizenship and inducements – material and other – to all of the outstanding, the gifted, and the creative to live in those countries – and even to those who were chased out of their own countries. For instance... London has become a safe haven for fundamentalists fleeing the hell of Middle Eastern despotism. They release, from London, their fiery communiqués for the destruction of the infidel West ...

“The prophecy has been fulfilled, and [these Islamists in London] have, in fact, become the only group to be redeemed from the inferno of tyranny, the hell of oppression, and the fire of despotism.

“It was the infidel West, for instance, that extracted oil from the Arabian desert, and turned it into a green paradise and expansive oases full of vitality. [In these oases,] various kinds of economic, intellectual, athletic and artistic activities flourish, and conferences and conventions are held to revile the infidel West and to accuse [other Arabs] of treachery, in the intoxicating atmosphere of the heart of the desert.

“If it were not for this massive technological aid, those countries would be living now as [they lived] in the earliest period of that great, time-honored history of theirs, before there was a West and before there were infidels.

“In addition, this infidel West dedicated its utmost efforts and thinking... to the medical sphere, and eliminated many of the contagious, infectious diseases that used to be predominant in the world. And it is this same West that gives [the Arabs] electricity with which to desalinate water...

If the West Were To Reciprocate the Enmity of the Arab Satellite Stations, “It Could Turn Their Lights Off and Send Them Back to the Early Camel Age”

“And it was [the West] that launched satellites ‘that float in the sky’(3) [that made possible] the [Arab] satellite TV stations which show up every day on the [TV] screens, and which sprinkle their unique ‘masterpieces’ over mankind. If the West wanted to, and if it were to act with the same logic of unveiled enmity [as the Arab satellite stations do], it could turn their lights off with one push of a button and send them back to the deep black depths and the Early Camel Age...

“I believe that applying oneself to putting forward all of the overwhelming conclusive arguments concerning the humanism of the West, the loftiness of its endeavors, and the nobility of its intentions, would be... a pointless linguistic digression. The general concept can be summed up by [the fact] that the West has not been grudging in [sharing] its humanism and its civilization with others, and it demands of them only a bit of quiet – if there is to be no good faith, recognition, and return of the favor...

“The world has become a narrow lane in a small global village. It listens, follows [developments], thinks, contemplates, and analyzes – and it cannot at all fathom the motives and the goals of this hostile and vicious discourse of incitement that some tirelessly market, exploiting their alliance with despotic regimes.

“One painful conclusion can be drawn from all of this... [and it is] that the more logical question... is not ‘why do they hate us?’ – if there is indeed some degree of hatred – but rather ‘why don’t they hate us?’...(4)

Al-Jazeera Talk Shows as a Window on Arab Society

In an April 15, 2007 article on Elaph.com, Na’isa took issue with those who criticize the popular Al-Jazeera talk show “The Opposite Direction.” In a rather backhanded compliment, he “praises” the confrontational show as an accurate, if pale, reflection of the conflictual state of contemporary Arab society:

“I don’t understand why many criticize ‘The Opposite Direction’... and call it... a cockfight, or a boxing ring, or a dialogue of the deaf.

“All the aforementioned program does is to pass on, through its participants and its unaffected interviews, some random aspects of a head-butting, fragmented Arab reality...

“’The Opposite Direction’ is a microcosm of the larger ‘opposite directions’ that are to be found in every home, in the street, within every institution, group, and political party, and in every small gathering, even those around a hookah and a backgammon table in a popular café, or in an out-of-the-way village.

“In fact, relatively speaking, [’The Opposite Direction’] is far less violent than what goes on in reality: the deafness, the anger, the resistance, the mutual shoving and head-butting. It often seems to me as though no one understands the other, and no one wants to listen to the other.

“If Allah, may He be praised and elevated – and the fact that he has not done this is [due to] His great wisdom – [but] if Allah were to bestow upon us weapons of mass destruction, we would destroy one another down to the last man... And then we could rest, and give tortured humanity a respite from our long and wearying problems, discussions, and talks.

“Hopefully our discussions will remain at the level of the ‘The Opposite Direction’ – a ‘bit’ of yelling and vituperation... and will not transform into a deadly hell and tremendous bloodshed...

“So first off, I would like to sincerely thank all of the participants... in this program, because they express, in a true and spontaneous manner, the nature of our societies, their innermost being, without any ‘touchup’... These are our people and our peoples. This is how we are. This is what we have to offer...”(5)

On the Arab Media’s Version of “Arab Identity”

In an April 26 article on Elaph, Na’isa wrote: “The charlatan... propagandistic media glories in the bombastic term ‘Arab identity,’ and it extols it and promotes it as the heavens’ gift to those sinking into a morass of backwardness...

“In truth, I tried hard, exhausted with fatigue and worn down by sleeplessness, and I [still] am trying, to define the basic characteristics of this identity vaunted by the Arab nationalists, professional pan-Arabists, and the Islamists, [thinking that] perhaps I could find a single reason or convincing explanation as to the uniqueness of this gift of nature that they dote on night and day.

Arabism and Arabization - asides from association with the a movement for unification among the peoples and countries of the Arab World, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Arabian Sea. it is more about Arab nationalism which asserts that the Arabs constitute a single nation. Europe: A few examples in France: Already in October 2000 among a very long and troubling list of attacks, Jews threatened and shoved by Arabs outside O.Y. Synagogue in Paris (first of two incidents) & 'Death to Jews' painted on two Synagogues in Marseilles [48], between 2000-2001 200 Arabs attacked Jews on the Champs Elysees [49], in March 2003 French Arab Muslims attack Jews in Paris in an "anti-war" march [50], in 2003 Jewish congregations in Sweden have noted a sharp increase in "harassment threats and attacks by Arabs and Muslims against Jews [51], in 2004 Six Arab youths attacked a twenty three year old young mother with her thirteen month old baby [52] after "deciding" she was Jewish, cut her hair with knives, slashed her clothes and scrawled swastikas on her belly in black felt-tip pen [53],in March 2006 Jews attacked in Paris suburbs by Arabs [54] in June 2008 Jewish Boy Attacked by Arab Muslim Mob in Paris [55], A 17-year-old French Jew Rudy Haddad attacked by North-Africans (Arabs) Jewish teen brutally beaten in apparent anti-Semitic attack in Paris, "[Sarkozy] assures the victim and his family of his support and renews his total determination to fight all forms of racism and anti-Semitism," said a statement from Sarkozy's office. A 23-year-old French Jew, Ilan Halimi, was found naked, tortured and covered in burns near Paris on February 13, 2006, after being held captive for three weeks. He died on the way to the hospital. The crime shocked France and raised fears of surging anti-Semitism among French Muslims. In February of this year, another Jewish teenager was tortured in the same town in which Halimi was killed, in yet another anti-Semitic attack. [56].

At the UN, The Arab Lawyers Union of Egypt in Durban in 2001, distributed a booklet of violently Ani Jewish cartoons and has, since then, continued its incitement to Jew-hatred [57].

Jeremy Jones wrote in a report in 2004 on Australia that some of the most overt anti-Jewish rhetoric in recent years has come from the Muslim and Arab groups & communities, and within the Arab and Muslim communities there is a group of activists who seek at every opportunity to denigrate Jews, not only in association with attacks on Israel[1].

On campus: The university of Columbia's investigation into charges of anti-Jewish intimidation by Arab professors [58].

Harassment on Jewish students in Canadian universities by Arabs like in Carleton [59], Concordia University [60] which has been described by some as "centre of militant Arabism in Canada" [61]. [62] there were charges (in 2002) of militant Arabism in Canada's Concordia University.

More on campus, On May 7 2002, an example has been seen at the SFSU while a large, angry crowd of Arab Palestinians and their supporters swarmed a Jewish peace rally (where students wore t-shirts that said "peace" in English, Hebrew and Arabic) members, used physical violence, and shouted "Get out or we will kill you" and "Hitler did not finish the job" [63] [64] [65].

There are complaints against the Muslim Students Association MSA of racism against Jews coming from its Arabs, Muslims, in 2008 Author David Horowitz, a popular conservative writer, was derided in a Nazi-like anti-Semitic cartoon, put out by the Muslim Student Association. The cartoon, which was copied and spread around campus, portrays Horowitz, a Jewish man, as a hooked-nose Nazi hiding in a trash can [66].

Pundits explain that the conflict in the middle east Arabs Vs Israel (that started with racist massacers on Jews accompanied with the slogan "Itbach al Yahud - Kill the Jews" [67] already in the 1920's [68], through Hitler's buddy [69] the Mufti Mohammad Amin al-Husayni is just another Arab Muslim intolerance, the plight of Israel - being a minority in a majority hostile middle east. [70] [71] [72] And even progressive, left wingers in Israel realize that Arab racism must go, and that "There will be no peace around here before Arabs view Jews as human beings." [73], or as others have phrased it: Racism and Middle East Politics, As long as middle-eastern Arabs teach their children to hate Jews, there will be no lasting peace [74]. 'Facts and Logic About the Middle East' asks: Racism in the Islamic World How can peace prevail in the Middle East in the face of Islamic bigotry and hate? When will moderate Muslims speak out? [75], and the phenomenon of the new anti-Semitism which demonizes Jews and Israel alike, has fused itself with the "old" European anti Jewish bigotry [76]. Saddam Hussein's "Three Whom God Should Not Have Created: Persians, Jews, and Flies" [77] who also led a racist [78] genocide campaign [79] against the Kurds, coincides with that in moments before his death, he shouted: 'Palestine is Arab', meaning only Arab. [80], as part of a culture of hatred, the racism that denies historic roots of the Jews to Israel [81].

The first recorded Arab attack on Jews in Palestine was already back in 1886 in Petach Tikva [82][83] [84] [85].

Regarding the racist expulsion of 850,000 to 900,000 Jews from Arab countries [86] [87] the ethnic cleansing of the Jews [88], the UN Watch Mar 19, 2008 has raised the importance of Historic truth in: Testimony at the UN - "Racism and Historical Truth: Jewish Refugees from Arab Lands" [89].

On anti-Jewish racism's effect on clarity of the middle east, Interfaith Office Acknowledges (May 2008) Anti-Jewish Motifs and Stereotypes in Commentary About Arab-Israeli Conflict [90], concern about Carter's pro-Arabism and veteran historian of Islam and the Middle East [91] & Bernard Lewis is concerned that the �Arab strain of racism, untruths and hatred against Jews and Israel is not only more virulent than its European counterpart, but is not counterbalanced by true scholarship or competing reason.� As a result, he believes, attitudes and beliefs �long discredited in the modernity of western countries take root with gullible, impressionable Middle Eastern audiences from a pre-modern culture.� [92].

There's extensive research on 'Palestinian Anti-Semitism' [93], In its official media, the PA daily described: The Fable of the Holocaust [94], the JCPA elaborates About Anti-Semitism among Palestinian Authority Academics and how The Palestinian Authority's academic anti-Semitism has built an extensive case against Jewish existence [95] This Palestinian racism is particularly dangerous because this hatred of Jews is portrayed as the will of Allah. [96] The Arab-Palestinian racism of killing only Jews In Israel, for the sole reason of being Jewish. they target every Jew, regardless of his or her individual political views, and they apologize when they accidentally kill a non-Jew, regardless of his political view. [97]

Rachel Neuwirth Wrote "Judenrein Palestine?" about Arabs forcing Israel to remove Jews from their historic Judea and asks: Why can�t Jews live in their historic homeland if there really is peace? After all, there are 1.2 million Arabs living as citizens of Israel in the one Jewish country in the world, while there are only a handful of Jews living in any of the 22 Arab countries. In fact, in Jordan and Saudi Arabia, not only is it illegal for Jews to be citizens, they are not even allowed to live there. Therefore, she proves, instead of Israel being the "apartheid state" in the region, it is the Arab world that is not only apartheid, but also racist and religiously exclusive" [98].

Arab Racism against Black Africans [99] [100], Darfur is but one example of Arab racism toward non-Arabs within the broader Arab world [101]. In the New York Times June 5, 1988 about Libya's leader: Qaddafi is bringing a truly racist crusade against Chad and Africa, Chad's President, Hissen Habre, told [102]. blacks who live in Arab countries subject to racism, most Arabs refer to blacks as "Abed" which means "slave" in Arabic. [103]. Umarlee details it: �Ugly Black Women�, Perfect Arab Wives, and Matters of Race, Arab racism is not akin to American white racism. Let it be said that Arab racism is different from white (American) racism [104]. In an article in The Guardian 2008, titled 'A paler shade of black' a former Sudanese Arab described his growing up (by his family) as "superior" to blacks, that were referred to as "abd" (slave), yet when he moved to Saudi Arabia he found out that his Arabness didn't measure up, he wasn't Arab enough in Saudi Arabia's racist society. [105] Some charge the Arab attitude on Darfur, 'to the True Nature of the Twin Fascisms of Islamism and Pan-Arabism' [106].

Eritreans in Egypt suffer from racism [107], in 2008 alone at least 20 Darfurian refugees (who tried to break free from Egypt's oppression into democratic Israel) have already died at the hands of Egyptian forces [108].

Palestinian-Arab Racism: Secretary of State Rice has been the subject of some vicious racial attacks [109] including an anti-black Racist Rice Cartoon in Palestinian Authority's controlled Press Al Quds 'Black spinster' label pinned on Condi Rice Palestinian media use racist terms including 'colored dark skin lady'[110] Condemned by Black Activists [111].

The Christian Science Monitor 2004 affirms that Racism is at root of Sudan's Darfur crisis [112], a writer at RaceandHistory.com calls it 'Arab Racism And Imperialism In Sudan' [113], Darfur crisis linked to Arab racism, Slavery [114]. and this genocide has been described as an example of Arab racism at its worst [115]. Sudanese decry the "Apology of racism", that some Sudanese people of Arabic origin consider themselves superior than the indigenous Sudanese [116]. Der Spiegel writes about the Janjaweed: Sudan's War within a War - regime that uses tribal conflicts and Arab racism [117]. Pundits of Sudan write about "Arab racism, Islamic bigotry and discriminatory practices are the most divisive issues in the Sudan" and its terrible effect, crimes on non-Arab Sudanese [118].

Angola's election last Friday

The MPLA and UNITA are in the news again. I am having visions of Nixon and Kissinger crafting cold war African policy. The two Angolan political parties haven't been in American newspapers much since 1975 but The ruling MPLA and challenging UNITA faced each other in an election in Angola on Friday. I have included below a very well written Council on Foreign Relations article on the election. Angola is rising and it is now the biggest producer of oil in Africa and most of the world. But it has an uneducated young populace. Now they have had their first election in sixteen years. I don't know if the MPLA will stay in power but Angola might be one of the fastest rising countries in the world.

Sarah Palin of Alaska to be he's running mate. Wow, this man has taste. Ladies ask yourselves does Mr. Mccain think you are not smart enough where does he come from? He thinks that all of you would vote for him if he just picks someone who has similar body paRTS as you do. We got news for Sen. Mccain, women's ability is not limited to Vice Presidency, they can be President. Please stop taking women for granted! He is doing this out of despair you can tell when someone is about to lose he or she would do anything. After watching, seeing one of the most great speeches that ever given in the 21st century by Sen. Barack Obama for his presidential nomination. The republican party and their candidate got scared to death all of a sudden they can not think straight. Gov. Sarah Palin, why are you accepting to be used, you are simply your party's scapegoat. You are making a bad name for all women, they are better than that this is why Sen. Hillary Clinton ran for the highest office in America...more power to her. We have a trememdous respect for her. She changed America not you, Gov. Palin, she was not picked out of the chery bowl. On November 4th, we are going to vote for Obama, Mr. Mccain, you cannot help us. We are witnessed when it comes to battle you go and hide your true self. We will not let that happen inside the WHITE HOUSE. We won't find Mr. Mccain if elected he is going to run away. Africa was a few short paragraphs and they used some of the contributions I gave word for word in some places. You can tell in the paragraphs that they actually used our ideas even if the wording was different. They also gave credit to my Africa Platform meeting in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Nigerian author Wole Soyinka has linked the Darfur genocide to the history of Arabs enslaving Negroid Africans in Sudan, the Harvard Crimson has reported.

The first African winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and a consistent critic of the Sudanese government asked the Arab section of Sudan to confront its enslaving past and acknowledge its current role in the violence in Darfur as racist instead of remaining in a “state of amnesia.”

An articulate intellectual and dramatist, Soyinka delivered the speech “Darfur: Anything to do with Slavery?” to a full house at the Center for Government and International Studies, Harvard University. He addressed the ongoing violence that has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of displaced refugees.

Soyinka argued that Arabs played a historic role in the African slave trade, and a feeling of supremacy still prevails among the Janjaweed, a militia terrorizing the Negroid part of the Sudan.
Soyinka said the Janjaweed are “motivated” by a mentality in which they see their victims as slaves. “You destroy a people if you treat them with disdain,” Soyinka is quoted as saying.

Along with other related articles, three covering the Middle East and North Africa caught my eye on April 26th.

The first was written by a journalist whom I have long admired--and I don’t admire many in the mainstream media.

I met Tom Teepen, now a syndicated columnist for Cox News, some three decades ago. I was visiting Cincinnati for a few days out of my Columbus office and had assorted media, university, and other visits, lectures, and televised debates scheduled. We have, on occasion, briefly touched base afterwards over the years.

Tom was editorial editor, I believe, for either the Cincinnati Post or Enquire. We spent a good deal of time reviewing the Middle East. Unlike too many others in the liberal camp, Tom still has maintained clear vision when it comes to Arab-Israeli politics. The real surprise was that my local newspaper published his op-ed. After many years of batting heads with the paper brass (first on my own, then with others), I’m finally noticing a bit more balance.

So, Tom’s Blaming Israel, Freelancing On Hamas--What Is Jimmy Carter Thinking? made it into the Daytona Beach News-Journal. He recapped Mr. Peanut’s recent hot date with Hamas in Syria, where Carter tried his best to make the deliberate disembowelers of Jewish babes and other innocents look good by getting it to provide him with some foggy cover for his non-stop assault on Israel, but Hamas--to its credit--wouldn’t let him. Headlines soon claimed, anyway, that Mr. Peanut achieved a breakthrough, with Hamas offering to ‘accept’ Israel.

When will they learn? Tom exposed Carter’s nauseating comedy act.

While an allegedly ‘born again’ Carter evidently doesn’t put much value in honesty, Hamas does. It has no--and will never have--any intention of granting Jews in one tiny state what Arabs demand for themselves in some two dozen others on over six million square miles of territory...including one already created from almost 80% of the original 1920 borders of Mandatory Palestine renamed ‘Jordan.’ The new state Arabs insist on creating on the ashes of Israel, not along side it, would be their second--not first--in ‘Palestine,’ the name the Roman Emperor Hadrian gave to Judaea after the Jews’ second costly revolt for freedom in 133-135 C.E. He renamed the country after the Jews’ historic enemies, the Philistines--a non-Semitic sea people from around Crete. Contemporary Roman historians such as Tacitus, Dio Cassius, and others wrote extensively about this themselves.

To most Arabs, the whole region is simply purely Arab patrimony...in their own words. As for the scores of millions of non-Arabs who have been conquered, massacred, and suppressed, Egypt’s past Uncle Tom Copt Foreign Minister, Dr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, perhaps said it best...accept forced Arabization and /or dhimmi status (like he did) or else. Copts were the native Egyptians conquered by Arabs after the 7th century C.E. along with numerous others.

As Mr. Peanut also knows, regarding the above, Hamas is no different than the alleged moderates of Abbas’s latter day Fatah Arafatians--regardless of how much whitewash he, Washington, and others throw upon them both. In order to force the Jews to play ball, a supposed Arab good cop had to be created to counter the State Department’s Arab bad cop.

Fatah (with as much, if not more, blood on its hands than Hamas) is simply more willing to play the Arabs’ well-known destruction in phases ‘diplomacy’ game vis-à-vis Israel to use petrodollar greased-international pressure to force Israel back to its pre-’67, 9-mile wide, armistice line--not border--existence to set it up for a combined Arab/Iranian final blow...something that UNSC Resolution 242 expressly stated was not to happen in the aftermath of the 1967 War.

But, Honigman, you say, you keep repeating these same points in many of your articles.

Yes, I do.

And as long as Arabs keep on repeating their lies and distortions, and morons or deliberate accomplices like Mr. Peanut do the same, those of us who care must repeatedly answer them. Their approach is if they repeat a lie often enough (and it goes unanswered), it will be accepted as truth.

Teepen did a good job with his short op-ed, especially since he has been a fan of Carter in the past. But let me continue to pick up yet a bit more where he left off.

With a new Presidential election approaching, I’ll never forget the last televised Democratic National Convention featuring ‘Apartheid Israel’ Mr. Peanut chasing ‘Israel is one of the top three evils in the world’ Michael Moore all over the convention floor. Closer soul brothers do not exist--unless you want to throw in a more slick Obama and the company he keeps to make a trio.

It was befitting that Carter visited Hamas in Syria, for Syria--not ‘Palestine’--was indeed the birthplace of Hamas’s patron saint, Sheikh Izzedin al-Qassam (for whom its ‘militant’ wing and rockets are named )...Latakia, to be exact. Of course, back then, many if not most Arabs in the area considered themselves to be southern Syrians, espousing one version or another of a Greater Syria plan. ‘Palestinians’ were the Jews.

Along with scores (if not hundreds) of thousands of others who poured into the Palestine Mandate (after the break up of the over four century old Ottoman Turkish Empire) due to its economic development by Jews, the Sheikh joined numerous other ‘native Palestinians’ who entered relatively recently from the latter 19th century onwards from Syria, Egypt, and elsewhere in rejecting the rights of Jews to do the same thing in any part of the ‘purely Arab patrimony,’ the Dar ul-Islam. Recall that half of Israel’s Jews were refugees from so-called ‘Arab’ and /or Muslim lands.

Moving on.

Article # 2, in the same paper, quoted Mahmoud Abbas complaining that, in his recent Washington visit, no one was talking about forcing Israel back to the ‘’67 borders.’

I do admit, that was a pleasant surprise.

While the State Department (and President Clinton and President Bush off and on) has tried its best to ignore 242’s call for the establishment of secure and recognized borders to replace Israel’s absurd 1949 armistice lines (which simply marked the point where Arab invading armies were halted upon Israel’s rebirth in 1948), Israel, despite the weakness of Prime Minister Olmert and his crew, has evidently made it clear that it took President Reagan’s words seriously when he stated on September 1, 1982:

In the pre-1967 borders, Israel was barely 10-miles wide...the bulk of Israel’s population within artillery range of hostile armies. I am not about to ask Israel to live that way again.

Not only were there mostly no Arab-Israeli ‘borders’ back then, but the Abbas/Arab claim that Israel is setting up settlements on Palestinian land has the same amount of truth in it as does the ‘67 border claim.

When Transjordan (army led by British officers)--created from most of the Mandate of Palestine in 1922--attacked Israel along with a half dozen other Arab states loaded with arms left over by the Allies in World War II in 1948, it seized Judea and Samaria...British imperialism’s west bank (of the Jordan River) as opposed to the Trans(’across’)jordanian east bank. Sir Alec Kirkbride, the Brits’ East Bank rep, wrote extensively about this in his A Crackle Of Thorns: Experiences In The Middle East.

The Arab land grab was illegal, only two nations recognized it. Still, Transjordan renamed itself Jordan, since it now held both banks, and saw to it that no Jews could reenter lands where their ancestors had lived and owned land for thousands of years until their massacres by Arabs in the 1920s and 1930s.

At the same time, huge numbers of Arabs continued to pour in...more Arab settlers setting up Arab settlements.

All together, so many Arabs were recent arrivals themselves into the Palestinian Mandate that
the United Nations Relief Works Agency--UNRWA--had to adjust the very definition of the word ‘refugee’ from its prior meaning of persons normally and traditionally resident to those who lived in the Mandate for a minimum of only two years prior to 1948 when counting those who fled the fighting Arabs started upon Israel’s rebirth.

Contrary to the Arabs’ claim that these were ‘occupied Palestinian lands,’ Judea and Samaria were non-apportioned parts of the Mandate, and leading international legal authorities such as Eugene Rostow, William O’Brien, and others have stressed that these areas were open to settlement by Jew, Arab, and other residents of the Mandate alike.

How could you occupy lands taken from an illegal occupier?

The territory in question is indeed disputed...not occupied Arab lands a la Abbas, Hamas, and Mr. Peanut.

When Israel captured Judea and Samaria in the ‘67 War as a result of a bad decision by Jordan to join Egypt’s Nasser, Syria, and others in the Arabs’ latest attempt upon its life, it came to hold territory of the Mandate officially apportioned to no one...not ‘Palestinian’ land. The Arabs themselves rejected a proposed 1947 partition of the remaining 25% of the Mandate left over after the creation of Transjordan in 1922.

While I do not advocate Israel holding on to the entire area, certainly a reasonable territorial compromise which corrects the travesty of the ‘49 armistice lines--a la 242--is a must. And Judea--land of the Jews--must never become Judenrein again...unless Arabs are prepared to see the one-fifth of Israel itself who are Arabs--many hostile--get the boot as well. Such population transfers have indeed already occurred elsewhere. Consider those involving Turks, Greeks, and Bulgars, Israel’s Jewish refugees from ‘Arab’ lands, and India and Pakistan for starters.

Now, about those Jewish settlements Abbas complains about in that second article.

If Jews are to return to Judea and Samaria in the context of a 242-type territorial compromise, then how and where else will this come about if not by establishing/reestablishing Jewish towns and so forth--’settlements?’ Without the latter, Israel doesn’t get the former.

Article # 3...

The News-Journal finally gave the genocide in Darfur some of the attention it deserves...large front page article with maps and big pictures.

Unlike the Arab-Israeli mess, however, the perpetrators might as well have come from Mars. No where was the word Arab mentioned.

After the Arabs burst out of the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century C.E. and forcibly Arabized millions of non-Arab peoples in the process, the Sudan (Nubia, etc.) held out for quite some time. In other parts of North Africa, native Jews aligned with Imazighen (’Berbers’) to resist this conquest as well. We’ll revisit this a bit later.

Back in the ‘60s, the first modern civil war broke out between the non-Muslim black African south and the Arab and Arabized (remember Dr. Boutros-Ghali’s comments above?) north in the Sudan.

Sudanese President Nimeiry’s stated during the slaughter of over a half million blacks at this time (and over a million more ever since) that...

‘the Sudan is the basis of the Arab thrust into...black Africa, the Arab civilizing mission (Arabism and Pan-Arabism in Sudanese Politics, Journal of Modern African Studies, Vol. 11, #2, 1973, pp. 177-78).’

Rudyard Kipling’s late 19th century poem, ‘The White Man’s Burden,’ supposedly typifies Western colonialist and imperialist attitudes towards the Third World. If that’s the case, then what does Nimeiry and the other example below, expressed in the Syrian Arab Constitution of the Ba’th, typify?

‘...The Arab fatherland belongs to the Arabs. They alone have the right to direct its destinies...The Arab fatherland is that part of the globe inhabited by the Arab nation which stretches from the Taurus Mountains, the Pacht-i-Kouh Mountains, the Gulf of Basra, the Arab Ocean, the Ethiopian Mountains, the Sahara, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea.’

Yet, the more recent full scale outbreak of violence in the Sudan in the 21st century has an even more revealing twist.

While earlier bloodshed there and elsewhere could largely be seen as modern extensions of the fourteen century-old clash between the Dar ul-Islam and the Dar al-Harb, the one in the Sudan’s Darfur (as those in Arab-occupied Kurdistan and much of the rest of North Africa) is mostly about Arab racism and chauvinism...pure and simple. You know, those folks who like to scream about ‘racist Zionism.’ Over a thousand years earlier, this led to the overthrow of the Syrian-based Arab imperialist Umayyad Caliphate.

So, in Sudan’s western region of Darfur, it’s Arab and Arabized versus black Africans...regardless of religion. Ditto for Arab versus Kurd, Amazigh, and so forth. These victims are mostly Muslims.

Even more recently, Morocco has outlawed the creation of an Amazigh political party...especially since it espoused good relations with Israel.

Keep in mind that Morocco has had, relatively speaking and as an ‘Arab’ country, reasonable relations with Israel itself. Hundreds of thousands of Israeli Jews had their roots there. But the prospect of former and current fellow victims of forced Arabization getting together has implications for Arabs that even the Moroccans can’t allow. Much if not most of North Africa is of Amazigh--not Arab--descent.

Among other comments in that debate, the Amazigh spokesman pointed out that both Jews and Berbers predated the Arab conquest by thousands of years, fought long and hard against that conquest, and want nothing to do with Arab identity and forced Arabization. Keeping in mind that in modern times many Berbers have already been killed by Arabs for less, very brave words indeed.

Having said this, journalists and folks like ex-Presidents shoulder huge responsibilities and should therefore dig much deeper before commenting and pontificating a la Carter on such issues.

Obama's father's economic critique

I just finished reading Barack Obama Sr's critique of Jomo Kenyatta's ecomomic plan of 1965. Obama warned of economic disparity, underused land, lack of good jobs for native Kenyans and poor investments. If Kenya had followed Obama who was Kenyatta's senior economist at the time Kenya may not have had a riot over land redistribution after the December 2007 election. Obama's crtique may have been written by his son today because it urged how everyone in Kenya could help improve the country. Obama did not advise Kenyatta that foreigners would ruin the country but that native black Kenyans needed to have a share of running their country and producing goods. Obama senior had a plan for his country similar to a John F. Knnedy or Barack Obama Jr. If only Kenyatta had listened to his senior economic advisor. The feeling of inequality now in Kenya probably wouldn't exist.

What happened to Africa?

Obama is very cool. I support him because of his experience. For the first time, he has the experience of growing up overseas. For the first time since the days of Thomas Jefferson, he has a parent from another country. For the first time, that country is Africa. No one can match that.

So, what happened to Africa? In this election cycle, about that continent, I have heard . . . nothing. I've heard a lot about Europe, and the Middle East, and a bit about South America. And that's as it should be. But Africa is a country in great need, and usually ignored by this nation. I kind of thought that we would hear more about it with a President who is half-African. Not half African-American; rather, half-African.

I don't think Obama needs to worry about white voters or the electorate in general turning on him if he discusses Africa. Maybe if that was all he focused on, or if he focused on it too much. But the occasional mention would not injure, and would greatly help us in remembering the Forgotten Continent, where there is today so much misery. Barack Obama, where is your Africa Policy Statement?

Obama Needs to Hammer Recent Disastrous Economic Decline and Foreign Policy Failures in Bush/Cheney Years

I am truly reluctant to be so presumptuous as to tell Obama some ideas on how to improve his campaign. This is a guy who only 4 years ago gave a rousing speech at the Democratic Convention, starting at that point to turn the Democratic party on its ear, kind of reminiscent to a student of history like me of the way Gandhi turned the British Empire on it is ear, and back in touch with the real people, its traditional base.

Money raising is far from my interests in Presidential Politics, but hey, this is still America, so therefore, I must note that Obama has raised more money than any candidate in American History. So it might seem like arm chair politics or Monday morning football for anyone to offer any advice or to suggest changing the course or changing the tack might be in order, so that above all he doesn't lose the idealistic and ideological base of his appeal and his power.

[The AP reports that Barack Obama reversed a two-month downward trend by raising more and spending less. He took in $52 million in June, more than twice the nearly $21.5 million raised by John McCain. Obama had $72 million cash on hand to McCain's $27 million.

The Politico points out that Obama raised $25 million on the last day of June alone; his one-day haul represents nearly half of his monthly total and more than Republican rival John McCain generated for the entire month. During the month, McCain did not have a single day in which he raised a million dollars.

Having said all of that, let me offer some strong advice, and I hope the 300 foreign affairs policy advisors, the pundits, and the professional political arm chairs and Monday morning quarterbarcks don't leap to any conclusions beyond the obvious, which is that I want Obama to win, and then I want to see him overhaul the USA's Foreign Policy and its entire image at the core of 7 billion peoples' thinking. This is decades over due, and really a dire situation internationally. I try to make this major point as humbly as possible:

OBAMA REALLY NEEDS TO HAMMER WHAT BUSH AND CHENEY HAVE DONE TO THE U.S. ECONOMY FOR THE PAST 8 YEARS, BY DUMPING SO MANY BILLIONS IN WAR. ONE LEVEL OF GOOD GOVERNMENT IS HOW YOU CHANNEL THE MONEY, AND THEY HAVE FAILLED REALLY BADLY. WE MAY BE TOO LATE AND TOO FAR INTO THE LAST STAGES OF IMPERIALISM.

If that sounds too Marxist, too bad. Marxian economic analysis is at the very core of the most successful historians and politicians, as a historical tool in determining what we are doing wrong, the downward spiral we are on in terms of the collapse of most of post World War II society. In Hegel and Marx's theories, this is simply called DIALECTICAL MATERIALISM.

And our brave military firing US missiles into not one, but a series of Afghanistan wedding parties, and within two more weeks, breaking into a home in Iraq a few days ago, and WHILE HE SLEPT: this is a disaster, not just "collateral damage."

These kinds of things are happening repeatedly, and they make all Americans very ugly indeed, as Ugly as we have actually become, or as ugly as Halliburton, Brown and Root and Blackwater have made us in the eyes of billions of people, for their ghastly excesses in Iraq and for the many mistakes by the military in Afghanistan.

The support for Obama's Timetable in Iraq from the Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki, even if he is kind of US Puppet, rather than for Bush's vagueness: that is real progress, make no mistake.

And seeing Obama walking with Afghani President Karzai: he proved one obvious point: his Presidential carriage, demeanor, and style.

This is urgent. This is long overdue. This is mandatory, not only for Americans, but for the rest of the entire world to further realize that Obama is a straightshooter, honest, and solutionary. To not do so is to miss the greatest opportunity and challenge any USA President has ever had.

The speech in Berlin might be the best place to start doing this, but even after: it will never be too late to take this course of action I am here prescribing!

This week we've had two issues that had as much drama as any tv miniseries in recent months. The UN security Council first voted on sanctions for Zimbabwe after an election that was as strange as any episode of Desperate Housewives. Robert Mugabe apparently terrorized enough Zimbabwe voters that his opponent refused to keep running. Mugabe acted surprised that his opponent dropped out and declared a fair victory. At the UN Russia and China voted no to economic sanctions. Mugabe was like what's all the fuss this was a fair election. I have to admit I didn't even know the vote took place because I was in northwest Alabama in a place so remote that the newspaper didn't cover events outside the county. Unless a world leader gave birth to calves it wasn't news. I tried watching tv but with an antenna you can pick up a lady who was abducted by aliens tell her life story to Montel Williams. So I watched two minutes of television in ten days.

Then President Bashir was going to be convicted by the International Criminal Court. The Sudanese President has been suspected of atrocities in Darfur since 2003 but he was finally convicted in a world court. Now they have to try to arrest him. I wonder if a Charles Taylor operation will be done?

So I had a lot to get caught up on when I came back on Sunday. I did read a lot of my four volume set on George Marshall. Where is he now? Where is the next George Marshall or Ralph Bunche to help Obama?

Maybe some of you, like me, is really worried about the last problems of democracy happened in Harare, Africa, where has been a "false election" made by Mugabe. He has been Head of State (Zimbabwe) in the past 28 years; in the last election, he was the only contendant...pretty easy to win, don't you think ?

All the World is acting right now to stop this tiranny.
What can we do, for this ?

Obama finally speaks out on Zimbabwe!

Senator Obama has finally spoken out on Zimbabwe. He called Tsvangirai which is good. He handled the situation just as I thought he would. He wants African and international pressure on Mugabe. As a Senator having an impact on foreign policy is difficult and under our Constitiution properly left to the President for better or worse. I guess with gas prices so high Obama can't realistically concentrate too much on Zimbabwe. The media is finally covering this story better. It just won't get much air time because American troops won't be going to Zimbabwe and our impact will very mininal. A President Obama could now plan his diplomatic team to address African problems in a sound and effective manner. Obama as president can offer careful deliberation and effective action. That's why he needs to win. Obama's comments are on the Obama main blog.

Yes Zimbabwe can!

The news did not look good for Zimbabwe early Tuesday. Morgan Tsvangirai was out of the race. Mugabe was running by himself on Friday and ready to congratulate himself for reelection when he terrorized his opponent. But then a new strategy came into play. Some African leaders are speaking out against Zimbabwe. One of the stronger leaders was Desmond Tutu. I wrote the other day to someone that the best strategy we could do was to get Africans and international organizations like the UN to go against Mugabe. This hurts his credibility when he "protects" his country against "white imperialism" even though Africans and people of African descent like Desmond Tutu, Mbeki of South Africa, Condeleeza Rice and Jendayi Frazer are speaking out against him. A President Obama could rally African leaders against Mugabe because he would have established leadership and a connection with African leaders and the African Union. When we are the sole superpower and can only give a letter of reprimand by our Secretary of State, we are as President Bush once said "running the country like a corporation." Now Morgan Tsvangirai is calling for armed peacekeepers to force a fair election.

Is Zimbabwe hopeless?

The election in Zimbabwe on Friday will be meaningless. Morgan Tsvangirai has dropped out of the election because people supporting him in the election have been harrassed and could be killed. Voters for Tsvangirai on Firday were threatened with punishment. Tsvangirai braved running for president of Zimbabwe in 2002 and was beaten and jailed. He valiantly ran again but now does not want to risk the lives and safety of others. Therefore Mugabe will stay as president. Tsvangirai forced a runoff in a disputed earlier election and gained more votes but supposedly not the more than 50% needed. With no meaningful election in Zimbabwe Friday how will the U.S. nd the world react?

Keep in mind Africa has produced a Mugabe, Charles Taylor and an Idi Amin. But it also has produced a Nelson Mandela, a Morgan Tsvangirai and Kenyan economist who lost his cabinet position for speaking his mind named Barack Obama. Morgan Tsvangirai has not yet been recognized for service to his country by the world. Now maybe he will.

The situation in Zimbabwe is also destabilizing South Africa with inconvenient refugees right as high food prices are hurting the developing world. I wonder how Obama adderessed this issue in his national security meeting last week?

Barack Obama's nomination as the presidential candidate of a major political party in the US has caused a great deal of excitement in Africa. Nation correspondents ARGAW ASHINE in Ethiopia, ANGELO IZAMA in Uganda, CHRISTOPHER KIDANKA in Tanzania, and TONY ELUEMUNOR sample the reactions in a few countries. Africans clearly seem ecstatic and the American with Kenyan roots has a huge fan club.

Until he started making news as a possible contender for the US presidency, Barack Obama, who this week won the Democratic ticket in the White House race, was almost unknown in Ethiopia. Now, he has a huge fan club in the country, with one of his greatest fans being Ms Birtukan Mideksa, former deputy chair of Ethiopia's opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) party.

Mideksa, who was jailed by the government of Meles Zenawi for two years for 'treason and inciting genocide' said that George W. Bush's administration backed the Zenawi government despite its 'betrayal of Ethiopia's democratisation effort in 2005'.

Mideksa is inspired by Obama's promise of change and hopes that, if Obama becomes president, the US will be more willing to nudge Mr Zenawi in a more liberal political direction.

'Senator Obama is an agent of change. I am sure he would restore basic civil rights, which many are being denied in the name of war on terror all over the world,' she said. 'I am highly impressed by his determination, courage and wisdom. He is my role model and I have fallen in love with his philosophy of change.'

She said she hoped African leaders would learn from Obama how to win the hearts of their people and also respect their rivals instead of fomenting hatred and confrontation.

Meanwhile, Abreham Kumela, a young NGO worker, has been nicknamed 'Obama' because of his strong support for the Illinois senator.

'He is not a politician; he advocates tolerance. He teaches us all how to effect change,' Kumela said, explaining his admiration for Obama.
He pointed out that, although Ethiopians at home will not vote in the American elections, he is campaigning among the thousands of Ethiopians in the US, who are also raising funds for Obama, to vote for Obama.

'Obama is bigger than just an politician with African roots; he is a symbol of tolerance and multiculturalism,' Kumela said.

Equally hopeful, but on for different reasons, was Dr Costentinos Berhe, former UN adviser to Nigeria. He believes that, if elected president, Obama might just solve the complex situation in the Horn of Africa.

'The war on terror should not just be a military project,' said Berhe. 'It should also address the cultural, social and political changes in this part of the world. 'I hope that, because of his African heritage, Senator Obama realises that this change is necessary.'

Human rights
When Obama spent a day in Ethiopia during his African tour in 2006, many Ethiopians realised that he did not support the actions of the current Ethiopian regime. His support for the Bill accusing Ethiopia of having a poor human rights record and proposing serious sanctions, including aid cuts, helped strengthen that view.

Indeed, Dr Rewodros Kiros, an Ethiopian lecturer at Harvard University, US, argues that Obama's victory might be disastrous for régimes like Ethiopia's, which do not respect human rights.

Evne in Uganda, where the British Premier football league is a must-watch for many, Obama is as recognisable as the premiership superstars.

'I support Obama for ethnic reasons,' said a university lecturer. He is a black man doing something extraordinary.

In the capital, Kampala, Obama merchandise is highly visible, from locally made T-shirts bearing the senator's picture and the words 'Change you can believe in', to bumper stickers.

Masaka town, 130 kilometres Kampala, has even named a road after the US Presidential candidate.

'Obama Boulevard', though not a boulevard in the ordinary sense of the word, was the brainchild of a local businessman, Frank Gashumba, who together with his neighbours, decided to bestow the honour on the Illinois senator.

'Obama has shown us all that you can come from a humble background and give the entire world hope. He makes you proud [to be] black,' the businessman said.

Meteoric rise
Younger educated Ugandans have formed an Obama fan club. And their name, Ugandans for Obama, gives a notable ring to the senator's meteoric rise in American politics. The founder, Bernard Sabiti, said he was inspired to form the group when he found people in a bar asking, 'How is a Kenyan going to rule America?' The group mainly comprises university students with access to the Internet, where they campaign for him.

Another group, the Obama Support Group, says it admires Obama because of his oratorical skills and inspiration. Their aim is to lobby Ugandan-Americans as well as US citizens in Uganda to vote for Obama. Excitement about Obama's candidature is also evident in neighbouring Tanzania, where many people view him as one of their own. After all, his father was a Luo from Kenya, but Luos are also found in Tanzania, some argue. The Obama-mania cuts across the different sectors of society, with many city commuter taxis now having the name 'Obama' emblazoned on them.

As news of Obama's victory in the Democratic party nomination spread in the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam, a local fan, Ave-Maria given remarked: 'At least America can have a president who is one of our own!'
Peter Tumaini-Mungu, a lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, gave a somewhat philosophical explanation for his support for Obama.

'Being a person of African origin might not be that important,' he said. 'Obama's policies towards Africa are ambitious, and he has a keen interest in the continent. That is something a person of any origin can have.'

The lecturer, who has attended several Obama campaign in the US, says Obama is a passionate and visionary whom the world needs to make it a better place.

'Obama articulates his policies in favour of the poor and the marginalised, something both Africa and Tanzania need,' he said.
And in West Africa, The Lagos State House of Assembly in Nigeria in April this year launched a website to popularise the Illinois senator and campaign for his White House bid.

During the launch, Lagos was turned into an 'Obama state', with taxis draped with banners bearing the senator's pictures. Their Vote Obama Initiative website explains their stand thus: 'Though without a voting right in the ongoing party primaries of the Democrats in the USA, like everybody around the world, we are very much involved because of the global implications the outcome of the elections would have on the world.

'We are particularly thrilled by Obama's feat because, for the very first time in the history of the US, he has successfully broken the colour bar. We are even more thrilled that white voters can rally forcefully behind this charismatic black man in his quest to become the first black president in the most powerful nation on earth.

Like Martin Luther King Jr said, today he is no longer being judged by the colour of his skin, but by the content of his character, which has propelled him from near obscurity to international limelight.

In Barack Obama, the agitations of early black nationalists such as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey and so many others found concrete expressions as he attains leverage in the political calculation of the US that would no longer ignore Afro-Americans and their electoral strength. To us, this is a feat worthy of celebration as the dawn of a new era.'

Obama spell
So potent is the Obama spell that a group of militant youths in Nigeria's Niger Delta were taken in by the tricks of a creative-minded security agent who, left with no answer to the fire power of the militiamen, decided to send them a message they could not ignore. He simply sent an e-mail purportedly from Obama, in which he asked that the militants stop the war in the area.

Surprisingly, the militants agreed and announced to the world that Obama had been requested to observe a ceasefire by a person they could not defy!

World oil prices were just starting to fall when the real Obama denied that he was the one who asked for a ceasefire. The young men of Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta returned to their trenches immediately.

Obama also enjoys huge support in Ghana, where Godwin Yaw Agboka, a columnist, tried to explain his appeal thus: 'Obama appears to have a magic wand that appeals to the youth, independents, and liberals. For the first tim, in many decades, the expectations among voters, are reaching boiling point - call it a crescendo. Voters seem to want things to change in Washington. Obama represents the change they want. Forget about the fact that he is black. Obama has transcended race. He talks about hope, and believes that 'there is nothing false about hope'. He knows how to say the right things at the right time'.

African initiative
With Obama now the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, one can expect the African Initiative for Obama group to swing into action - selling posters, caps, and other merchandise, all to support him.
The group has affiliates across West Africa, and plans to spread throughout the continent.

On Tuesday, its chairman and continental coordinator, Elvis Agukwe, told Daily Nation in Abuja that in about a week, they will approach church leaders and Imams to ask their congregations to begin special prayers for God to guide Americans in their choice of president.

Beyond the buzz, however, Obama has clearly touched something profound among many Africans. As Patricia Jebbah Wesley, a Liberian poet, puts it, 'It is a good thing that I am alive to see all of this, and it is a good thing that you are reading this ,and you too, are alive to record this for your children'.

C'est là que Barack Obama apparaît et redonne une lueur d’espoir, parce qu'il est debout (il n’a pas eu peur d’oser lui, un NOIR, de postuler pour la magistrature suprême des USA, balayant ainsi deux siècles d’histoire), parce qu'il rassemble, parce qu'il parle d'union, de soutien des uns aux autres, de tolérance, parce que son attitude est foncièrement démocrate, humaniste, universelle, divine, il fait quand même partie d’une église évangélique très progressiste. Si Obama correspond au candidat qui semble le plus capable de fructifier cette mission, pourquoi pas ? Le mouvement Obama est ancré dans l’idée de rupture, du changement. Dans son discours le soir de sa victoire sur Hillary, à St Paul dans le Minnesota, Barack Obama a déclaré : "c'est notre moment. C'est notre moment de tourner la page des politiques du passé." Actuellement, Obama a l’oreille du monde entier (ce n’est plus le candidat des seuls américains, mais de tous ceux qui aspirent au changement partout dans le monde), mais plus particulièrement d’une nouvelle génération de jeunes (à cause de son côté jeune idéaliste) qui veulent une rupture avec l’ordre ancien. En effet il vaut peut-être mieux dire "change" for "hope" que "change" because I have experience. Barack Obama a une qualité qui est indispensable quand on cherche à être élu : il a du charisme. Il parle bien, il sait être sincère et faire adhérer les gens à ses idées. Cette qualité réside au niveau des énergies (c’est divin). Quand Barack Obama s'adresse à des foules, son désir sincère d'être utile à ses semblables, l'amène lui-même à accéder à des hautes fréquences énergétiques aux quelles seuls les véritables altruistes ont accès. “It’s not about me,” “Je ne suis pas là pour moi-même”. Ceux qui veulent le pouvoir pour eux mêmes ne peuvent y avoir accès, aussi accusent ils celui qui le possède, de faire de beaux discours ! Democracy Zimbabwe style!

Zimbabwe is now ordering officers in the army to salute Mugabe but not Tzvangarai if he is elected president. So we can now appreciate how in our system of government all military officers must salute and be loyal to any commander in chief. Officers in the American system also cannot criticize a commander in chief. In Zimbabwe there is pressure to only vote for Mugabe. Our officers can vote, but not campaign for a challenger to a sitting president. In our country we can appreciate a balance between loyalty and personal rights. I think Zimbabwe is showing us the superiority of our system. We Americans can certainly learn democratic ideas from other countries, but at this time certainly not Zimbabwe.

New problems in South Africa

In the past few days there has been disturbing news from South Africa that citizens have been attacking newcomers. A large part of this problem has been the people fleeing Zimbabwe. A runoff has been set for June 27 in Zimbabwe between Morgan Tsvangirai and Robert Mugabe. This will be a big election that could either be a big win for Tsvangirai or a win for Mugabe that will possibly cause unrest.

With many African countries in distress that could be stabilized with good U.S. leadership, a President Obama's State Department selections are very important. Since we will be leaving Iraq, Bill Richardson and Susan Rice have African experience as possible top Secretary of State and Undersecretary positions. Richardson as an undersecretary may actually uderutilize his expereinces. Susan Rice would be in a higher position than her previous experience as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. It'll be interesting if Obama selects Middle Eastern, African or European specialists at the State Department. U.S. Ambassador positions will have a great influence on the success and uniqueness of an Obama foreign policy of change.
