Hey Georgia! Lets talk about some of the logistics of the campaign...housing!

Hi there Georgians for Obama! I'm new to the Peach State (fresh from New York City!) - moved here with my boyfriend who is stationed at Ft. Benning - and I'm also new to the campaign! I just accepted an offer to work with a liberal non-profit to reach out to undecided voters and let them know what OBAMA can do for our country!

Well, I have to do my training in Atlanta, which is 1.5 hours way from Ft. Benning, and lets face it - with gas prices, there is NO WAY I can afford to commute 3 hours round trip every day! I know there are a lot of people who are in my shoes all over the country, and all over Georgia, so I started this blog. A few people who are working DIRECTLY for OBAMA have pre-arranged housing with supporters, but there are so many more of us who are with like-minded organizations that don't have a place to stay!

If you need housing in Georgia, post here and lets see if anyone can help us out. Want to offer housing to volunteers or staff who will be relocating to your area to do campaign work? Post here and let us know what you can do to help out!

If you don't have to time to commit to the campaign full-time, this is a great way to support someone who is living, breathing and eating it for the next 6 weeks! Thanks for reading and lets get this started! (And well, if anyone can help me out in Atlanta with housing for a few days over the next two to three weeks, that would be awesome!)

In almost 30 years, deep inside me, I have been looking for something! Something that can literarily bring people together. Not Fear, Not Terrorism, Not War, Not hanging chad in Florida, Not Halliburton, Not the supreme court, but a unifying force larger and bigger than myself. Something, Someone whom the whole Nation regardless of there cultural heritage, regardless of how they came off the boat - through Africa, through Europe, BY FORCE, Voluntarily, through south of the border, SOME FORCE THAT CAN BRING ALL OF US TO THE BAR-ROOM, LIVING ROOM, HALLWAYS, INSIDE THE ELEVATORS, GATED COMMUNITIES AND YES, EVEN IN THE GHETTO. TO HOPE AGAIN, FEEL GOOD and once again to belief in the goodness of America. That force is in the person of Barack Obama. I feel it in my spirit that this time, people are wholesome in there support, convicted in their belief and I too, along with all of the optimist out there, must put our effort into working with those who are still yet to belief that there is a train of change moving through. Let's not force them or else we'll loose them. Let's not chastised them, or we'll alienate them but instead, let's work with them to show them Missouri. It's still out there. I just returned from Barack's speech at McEachern High School in Powder Springs, GA. This was my first opportunity to see Barack speak live, and I have to say it was everything I thought it'd be and then some. The atmosphere was electric, the attendance was overwhelming, and the town hall format was all it was cracked up to be -- Senator Obama was on the stage for over an hour, most of that time in a Q&A session with people chosen at random (well, not totally random as Barack insisted on doing it "boy/girl, boy/girl") right out of the stands, and not from the VIP section.

Saturday June 28th, approximately 50 people gathered at my home for the purpose of supporting Barack Obama for President. I was glad to welcome my friends and neighbors into my home to discuss our stories of support for Obama, frustration with the present state of our government, pride and amazement that our country is coming together to elect a man with values and the touch of the common man, despite is ethnic heritage. I was surprised that Middle America stood up and voted for change and I'm energized by the fact that this could actually happen. We had a diverse crowd. Young, old, male, female, black, white and Hispanic straight and gay. All expressing their willingness to get out the vote for Obama. I knew of the passion of many of my friends but I was really moved by the depth of commitment of some of my neighbors who found the meeting on the web and stepped out of their comfort zone and came to the home of a complete stranger. There were no strangers at the meeting. Everyone blended and shared and listened to each others ideas and concerns. Alvelyn Sanders our resident Obama Fellow led the discussion, shared her heartfelt story of connection with one America. So far five people have volunteered to have a house meeting; several including myself are going to participate in the voter registration drive in East Point on the 4th of July. Alvelyn told us that there are 500,000 unregistered voters in Georgia. I believe we can reach then for Barack Obama and win Georgia in the fall. We ended the meeting with a meal prepared by my friends Rob, Rob, Lawrence and myself. The 2 Buck Chuck flowed and a good time was had by all as we continued to share our passions until midnight. The obligatory reading of the course syllabus

This is it. My first blogpost. Ever. I've never had a blog, so I feel like the kid who's parents loved him enough to actually have a clown and a pony at the birthday party. It's very exciting.

Breifly, my name is Matty J, and I'm an attorney. Sure, it sounds like I'm introducing myself at a meeting of [REDACTED] Anonymous, but the analogy fits - acknowledgement is the first step to recovery.

I live in Atlanta, but I don't even pretend to be a native - I couldn't fake it if I tried. I'm really a displaced North Carolinian. I grew up in North Carolina (Greensboro and Raleigh), I went to college in North Carolina (Wake Forest and NC State), I worked in North Carolina, and I attended law school in North Carolina (UNC).

Organizing for Obama in Metro Atlanta

Hi,

My name is Jeff Joslin. My wife and I have been very active in the Obama campaign. We have volunteered and spent considerable time in 5 states working toward a primary or caucus. Here in GA, we partnered with the campaign to open a Get Out the Vote (GOTV) field office in College Park. We had over 100 volunteers help canvass over 4 days during the GA Primary. Like you, we are now turning our efforts toward the Fall Election here on the north side of Atlanta.

You may be aware of the Obama Campaign's ethic of "Respect, Empower and Include" as they work with local volunteers. What this means to me is that as the Campaign returns to work in Atlanta, they will need to reach out for the experience, structure and knowledge of local groups like the Buckhead for Obama Group as they work to get as many votes as possible for Sen. Obama in Atlanta in November. As Barack Obama frequently mentions, this grass-roots support will also be needed by President Obama after the campaign is gone and we stand with our new president ready to bring change to our county.

We are now trying to organize a group of committed volunteers in the Atlanta area to facilitate connecting every Obama Group in the Atlanta Metro area. When you think about the possibilities there are potentially hundreds of groups; groups like this one focusing on the local community, groups for veterans, women, students, professional groups, etc., etc.

My hope is that a group of very committed volunteers can facilitate the connection all of these groups, so that we may support and help with one another's events and with each groups recruiting effort. That way, when the Buckhead for Obama group has a local effort needing volunteers, it can be attended by others in the Metro Area as well. We also need a close association and coordination with both the Obama Campaign and the Democratic Party as we head into the fall election.

We have had one meeting at our home in Brookhaven. We are holding a second meeting in Union City tonight. We anticipate a phone banking effort Sunday afternoon here in Buckhead to re-connect with Obama volunteers who helped in the GA Primary. We need help with this effort. We also would like the help of those who feel very committed to the Obama for President effort and would like to help with an Atlanta Metro Organization that helps facilitate the formation and communication of local Atlanta Obama Groups. Together we can not only help win the General Election for Sen. Obama here in GA, but we can have fun, show the power of grass-roots efforts and help create groups that will then be President Obama's grass-roots support after he is inaugurated in January, 2009.

Organizing in Atlanta

My wife and I are now starting to form a group in the Atlanta Area to ensure a big Obama turnout here for the Fall Election. This group will support the current voter registration drive, help other special interest groups form, increase Obama visibility in the Metro Area, get out the vote (GOTV) and serve as a resource for Atlanta Area events and efforts.We also hope to maintain this group as a grassrots effort to support President Obama after his inauguration. If you live in Atlanta or have experience creating a network of grassroots groups, please drop me a note at obamaatl@gmail.com. This group is an offshoot of the 100+ volunteers who worked in the S. Fulton GOTV operation we organized during the January Primary. We hope to vastly expand this group and cover much of the metro Atlanta area, coordinating with the Obama Campaign, The GA Democratic Party and all of the local Obama Groups. What a day! John Edwards just endorsed Barack Obama. On Tuesday, Sen. Obama will likely win the Oregon Primary and claim an insurmountable lead in delegates. Barack Obama is close to victory as the Democratic nominee for President!

The hard work of thousands of volunteers like you has brought us to this moment.

Now is the time to start preparing for the fall Presidential Election.

We need to quickly start organizing; building coalitions of volunteers ready and willing to work for an Obama win this fall. We need to register new voters, reach out to independents. Win over disaffected Republicans, build support among friends and neighbors and make many other preparationsfor the November election.

Georgia is a critical state. It is very possible that the enthusiasm and support for Obama will turn Georgia from a Red, conservative state, to a Very Blue Democratic one in this election. We envision groups centered on local communities and neighborhoods, professions, members of companies, fund raising groups, special interest groups, the sky is the limit. We hope these groups (your groups) will work independently, yet connected through a common goal, ready to coordinate with the Obama Campaign to win Georgia for Barack Obama.

The first meetings will be held Thursday, May 22nd and Tuesday, May 27th. The meeting on the 22nd will be in our home on the North Side of Atlanta, near Lenox Mall. The second meeting on the 27th we would like to hold in the College Park or Union City area. We need help finding a placed to hold this second meeting.

Dear Mrs. Miller;

I have walked this earth now for many a mile and many a year, and there are times when it seems like every step of the way. I've been told to wait. I walked from Selma to Montgomery and beyond with Martin Luther King, Jr--and even the sincerest of people often greeted our struggle for civil rights with a plea for patience.

"You're right, " they'd say, "but the timing isn't. Couldn't you wait just a bit?"

I walked in Dr. King's footsteps after his assassination, assuming the helm of the SCLC and marching for an end to the war in Vietnam. And politicians told us, "We know this war is a disaster, but the political climate isn't right for ending it. You'll have to wait." Today, I am proud to march alongside one of the most inspiring leaders our country has seen in a generation. His name is Barack Obama, and he holds out the promise of a new politics steeped in possibility. And once more, we're hearing that tired old refrain.

"Yes," the skeptics say of Barack, "he surely is an extraordinary leader. And yes, he most certainly was right to oppose the war in Iraq back when other politicians were backing it blindly. And, why, of course he's right about all those aching and unmet needs here at home. But he hasn't spent enough time in Washington, D.C. "Why doesn't he wait?"

Well, in most respects, I've grown more patient with age--but this time around, I hope you won't begrudge me an old man's sense of urgency amid fading time, when I tell you: I'm too old to wait.

I'm too old--and too many young lives are at risk--to wait for sanity to prevail and this disastrous war in Iraq to end. Only Barack Obama had the foresight and fortitude to oppose it from the very beginning. And only Barack has shown backbone sufficient to detail a specific plan to bring every last one of our troops home within a year.

I'm too old--and too many of our neighbors are hungry and ill--to wait for someone to deal with America's twin crises of proverty and health care. These are national shames in a nation of abundance and plenty, and Barack will tackle them with the urgency they demand. I'm too old to wait for bold leadership on global warming, on education and opportunity here at home, on genocide in Darfur and AIDS in Africa, on the many issues our politics seem too small to confront. I'm too old to wait for a politics enlivened by possibility, a politics broad and deep enough to accommodate both our needs and our dreams.

I'm too old, in short, to wait for Barrack Obama to be President of the United States.

Now, I hope you won't misunderstand. I may have walked many a mile and many a year, but these legs of mine are willing to walk many miles farther--as many as it takes to see our country's promise of hope made real. But I'm old enough to know that when people are suffering, patience is no virture. It's urgency that this moment demands.

For the choice we face is urgent. It is the hope and change Barack Obama offers--or what John McCain proposes; giving George W. Bush's failed policies, from Iraq to the economy, another four years. It is up to you and me to ensure Barrack has the resources both to talk with Americans about these choices and to respond to the attacks that, sadly, we know will continue.

If you're content to wait for change, this moment may not feel as urgent as it does for me. Buti I know you're not. I know you know that America can't afford to wait. Neither can this campaign. That's why I hope you'll join me in rushing a generous contribution--the most generous you can possibly afford--to Obama for American.

I wouldn't ask you to do this just for one man who's too old to wait. I'm asking you to stand with Barack for a country that's facing too many challenges--and too many opportunities--to wait for the bold and hopeful leadership Barack Obama offers. Please respond today

Stopping Infant Abuse and Neglect! An Election Issue!

A recent report released from the CDC in Atlanta states that Infants are becoming victims of Abuse and Neglect at an alarming rate.

The study focused on children younger than 1 year of age.

Researchers counted more than 91,000 infant victims of Abuse and Neglect from
Oct. 1, 2005 to Sept. 30, 2006.

1 in 50 U.S. infants were found to be victims of such Maltreatment within their first year. About 30,000 of those cases were infants aged one week or younger. About 68 percent of those cases were attributed to neglect.

“It is a particularly vulnerable group,” said study co-author Rebecca Leeb, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This information was retrieved from National Databases of cases verified by Protective Services agencies in 45 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Other studies have looked at national child abuse and neglect cases, but this is believed to be the first to focus on infants, said Leeb, a CDC epidemiologist.

The Federal Government defines Neglect as as a failure to meet a child’s basic needs including housing, clothing, feeding and access to medical care. In addition Child Abandonment and Drug-Addicted Newborns.

Medical professionals identified about 65 percent of the maltreated newborns to protective services staff. The others came from law enforcement, relatives, friends, neighbors and from protective services staff.

The CDC worked with the Federal Administration for Children and Families to complete the study.
A similar study was conducted in Canada.

Parenting Classes can also help to prevent Infant Abuse & Neglect.

Who would want to harm an Innocent baby who did NOT ask to come into this World?

If you don't plan on properly caring for the child(ren) keep some Trojans nearby or use other EFFECTIVE methods of Birth Control.

Women should STOP making babies just to get a Welfare Check or to keep a dude!

Stopping/ Preventing this type of Abuse should be an Election Issue.

My Experience in the Primaries

I voted for Obama yesterday. I looked around while I was at the polls in downtown Atlanta, and I noticed that I was the only Caucasian person there. All the volunteers were African American and all the voters were as well. It left a feeling of contentment with me. For the first time in years the African American community voice can be heard at the poles and that is when I realized that Obama really did have the chance to make these changes happen. Communities that were once underrepresented at the polls came out in a great force to support their candidate.

44% of all registered voters in Georgia turned out to the polls yesterday. Obama, you swept our Democratic ticket. Good luck to you.

In October 1962, a young president confronted one of the greatest crises of his century. After U.S. intelligence confirmed that the Soviets were shipping medium-range nuclear missiles to Cuba — missiles easily capable of reaching the U.S. mainland, just 90 miles away — President John F. Kennedy considered whether to set fire to the Cold War.

The press was itching for a first strike by American forces, as was the public. The formidable Dean Acheson, an architect of the U.S. strategy of Communist containment, pushed for an invasion of Cuba. Gen. Maxwell Taylor, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Kennedy: "Hit 'em without any warning whatsoever," according to Robert Smith Thompson's "The Missiles of October."

But the 45-year-old Kennedy, who had barely won the Oval Office over the more experienced Richard Nixon, resisted. Instead, he pulled off a stunning diplomatic coup and averted what might have been an all-out nuclear war. Kennedy — chastened, no doubt, by the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion — had the backbone to stand up to an array of presumed wise men who wanted a military showdown.

Barack Obama, 46, has shown similar gumption. On Oct. 26, 2002, he gave a speech in Chicago opposing the invasion of Iraq.

Early voting starts Monday for the Feb. 5 Georgia presidential primaries.

If you don't want to stand in line at the polls on Election Day, you can cast an advance ballot at your county registrar's office all next week. Unlike absentee voting, you don't even need a reason. But you do have to vote in person.

You'll need a picture identification to cast an advance ballot, just as you would on Feb. 5. Under the state's Voter ID law, you'll need one of six forms of photo ID. They are:

• Any valid state or federal government-issued photo ID, including the free Voter ID Card issued by your county registrar's office or the Georgia Department of Driver Services.

• A Georgia driver's license, even if expired.

• Valid employee photo ID from any branch, department, agency or entity of the U.S. government, Georgia, or any county, municipality, board, authority or other entity of the state. This includes current photo ID from a public Georgia high school or college.

As an instructor of History at a local junior college and a doctoral student of History, my perspective is well, historical. What follows is my own reflection of Obama's significance as a part of an important legacy.

My cousin Candace, an author and screenwriter (visit her blog at: http://www.blackexpat4obama.com) who has dual citizenship, is a member of Americans Abroad for Obama in London. She sent me an email asking if Andrew Young had made any comments about Hillary Clinton’s excessive emphasis on late President Lyndon B. Johnson’s contribution to the passage of the sixties’ civil rights legislation. I sent her a reply, giving details about Andy’s apparent silence and some of the goings on in my hometown of Atlanta, Georgia with regard to Barack Obama. She later informed me that she forwarded my email and that it had actually inspired a few folks. An edited version—leaving out our discussion about replacing furnaces—appears below in bold.

What I can tell you is that Hillary Rodham Clinton assumed that by painting LBJ as the single engineer of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts implied that Black folks need the right White president to get things done. I have not heard what Andy has said about this. I can tell you that the 'Old Guard' leadership does not speak for the vast majority of Black folks and White folks under and over 60. Andy, Charles Rangel, and John Lewis are expecting some favors from the Clinton camp should she win the nomination and the presidency; that is why they are supporting Hillary. Barack does not owe them anything. This fact has been brought up every day on nationally syndicated Black talk radio shows here in Atlanta.

FYI: Obama headquarters in ATL has a throng of little old black ladies, little old white ladies, little old white men, little old black men, 20-something black and white women and men, 30-somethings, 40-somethings, etc. And we have a wall with the tallies of college participation with Morehouse College students in the lead for the most donations and volunteers. The sister who cuts my hair has Obama signs all over her hair salon. And since I do not teach on Thursdays, I arrived today for a haircut just in time to have a lively conversation with City Councilman Jim Maddox's wife, along with the wives of several Black ministers who have said, "Enough is enough." Muriel, whose last name I have already forgotten, said plainly, "If for some reason, God-forbid, Barack does not make it, then I am going down with him." They and their husbands have pledged their support to Obama, as did Mayor Shirley Franklin. A legion of them are now headed to South Carolina.

Things are thick and shifting every damn minute in Atlanta. But Obama fever is on the rise. My last phone call to a potential voter turned out to be a Black man who said he was seventy-five-years-old. I asked if he minded telling me whom he planned to vote for in the Democratic Primary on February 5th. He said, "Come on now, you don't even need to ask! You know it's Obama. And please tell me what the hell is wrong with Andy and John Lewis?!!" I love it!

I had my moment this morning when it hit me that M. L., born in Atlanta, armed with a Ph.D., eloquent in speech, mighty with a pen, led a bus boycott in Montgomery at the ripe old age of 26. Activist E. D. Nixon chose him, precisely because he was young, inexperienced, and unattached to Montgomery's white power structure. I'd like to request that Obama consider speaking also at Trinity Presbyterian in Atlanta, from my having experienced its stand with Ebenezer when MLK was killed, and from my knowledge that such as Desmond Tutu have also spoken there.

When King was killed, while RFK marched in the funeral procession, our pastor let us know that Ebenezer had extended an invitation to join their services some Sunday, and that the invitation had been returned. One closely ensuing Sunday, a noticeable percentage of our congregation absented itself, to which the pastor declared, "Now we have the church we always wanted."

Trinity is at the corner of Howell Mill and Moore's Mill roads, in northwest Atlanta, easily accessible from I-75's Howell Mill exit.

. Know hope:

The Scripture tells us that when Joshua and the Israelites arrived at the gates of Jericho, they could not enter. The walls of the city were too steep for any one person to climb; too strong to be taken down with brute force. And so they sat for days, unable to pass on through.
But God had a plan for his people. He told them to stand together and march together around the city, and on the seventh day he told them that when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn, they should speak with one voice. And at the chosen hour, when the horn sounded and a chorus of voices cried out together, the mighty walls of Jericho came tumbling down.
There are many lessons to take from this passage, just as there are many lessons to take from this day, just as there are many memories that fill the space of this church. As I was thinking about which ones we need to remember at this hour, my mind went back to the very beginning of the modern Civil Rights Era.

Because before Memphis and the mountaintop; before the bridge in Selma and the march on Washington; before Birmingham and the beatings; the fire hoses and the loss of those four little girls; before there was King the icon and his magnificent dream, there was King the young preacher and a people who found themselves suffering under the yolk of oppression.
And on the eve of the bus boycotts in Montgomery, at a time when many were still doubtful about the possibilities of change, a time when those in the black community mistrusted themselves, and at times mistrusted each other, King inspired with words not of anger, but of an urgency that still speaks to us today:
“Unity is the great need of the hour” is what King said. Unity is how we shall overcome.
What Dr. King understood is that if just one person chose to walk instead of ride the bus, those walls of oppression would not be moved. But maybe if a few more walked, the foundation might start to shake. If a few more women were willing to do what Rosa Parks had done, maybe the cracks would start to show. If teenagers took freedom rides from North to South, maybe a few bricks would come loose. Maybe if white folks marched because they had come to understand that their freedom too was at stake in the impending battle, the wall would begin to sway. And if enough Americans were awakened to the injustice; if they joined together, North and South, rich and poor, Christian and Jew, then perhaps that wall would come tumbling down, and justice would flow like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream.
Unity is the great need of the hour – the great need of this hour. Not because it sounds pleasant or because it makes us feel good, but because it’s the only way we can overcome the essential deficit that exists in this country.
I’m not talking about a budget deficit. I’m not talking about a trade deficit. I’m not talking about a deficit of good ideas or new plans.
I’m talking about a moral deficit. I’m talking about an empathy deficit. I’m taking about an inability to recognize ourselves in one another; to understand that we are our brother’s keeper; we are our sister’s keeper; that, in the words of Dr. King, we are all tied together in a single garment of destiny.
We have an empathy deficit when we’re still sending our children down corridors of shame – schools in the forgotten corners of America where the color of your skin still affects the content of your education.
We have a deficit when CEOs are making more in ten minutes than some workers make in ten months; when families lose their homes so that lenders make a profit; when mothers can’t afford a doctor when their children get sick.
We have a deficit in this country when there is Scooter Libby justice for some and Jena justice for others; when our children see nooses hanging from a schoolyard tree today, in the present, in the twenty-first century.
We have a deficit when homeless veterans sleep on the streets of our cities; when innocents are slaughtered in the deserts of Darfur; when young Americans serve tour after tour of duty in a war that should’ve never been authorized and never been waged.
And we have a deficit when it takes a breach in our levees to reveal a breach in our compassion; when it takes a terrible storm to reveal the hungry that God calls on us to feed; the sick He calls on us to care for; the least of these He commands that we treat as our own.
So we have a deficit to close. We have walls – barriers to justice and equality – that must come down. And to do this, we know that unity is the great need of this hour.
Unfortunately, all too often when we talk about unity in this country, we’ve come to believe that it can be purchased on the cheap. We’ve come to believe that racial reconciliation can come easily – that it’s just a matter of a few ignorant people trapped in the prejudices of the past, and that if the demagogues and those who exploit our racial divisions will simply go away, then all our problems would be solved.
All too often, we seek to ignore the profound institutional barriers that stand in the way of ensuring opportunity for all children, or decent jobs for all people, or health care for those who are sick. We long for unity, but are unwilling to pay the price.
But of course, true unity cannot be so easily won. It starts with a change in attitudes – a broadening of our minds, and a broadening of our hearts.
It’s not easy to stand in somebody else’s shoes. It’s not easy to see past our differences. We’ve all encountered this in our own lives. But what makes it even more difficult is that we have a politics in this country that seeks to drive us apart – that puts up walls between us.
We are told that those who differ from us on a few things are different from us on all things; that our problems are the fault of those who don’t think like us or look like us or come from where we do. The welfare queen is taking our tax money. The immigrant is taking our jobs. The believer condemns the non-believer as immoral, and the non-believer chides the believer as intolerant.
For most of this country’s history, we in the African American community have been at the receiving end of man’s inhumanity to man. And all of us understand intimately the insidious role that race still sometimes plays – on the job, in the schools, in our health care system and in our criminal justice system.
And yet, if we are honest with ourselves, we must admit that none of our hands are entirely clean. If we’re honest with ourselves, we’ll acknowledge that our own community has not always been true to King’s vision of a beloved community.
We have scorned our gay brothers and sisters instead of embracing them. The scourge of anti-Semitism has, at times, revealed itself in our community. For too long, some of us have seen immigrants as competitors for jobs instead of companions in the fight for opportunity.
Every day, our politics fuels and exploits this kind of division across all races and regions; across gender and party. It is played out on television. It is sensationalized by the media. And last week, it even crept into the campaign for President, with charges and counter-charges that served to obscure the issues instead of illuminating the critical choices we face as a nation.
So let us say that on this day of all days, each of us carries with us the task of changing our hearts and minds. The division, the stereotypes, the scapegoating, the ease with which we blame our plight on others – all of this distracts us from the common challenges we face – war and poverty; injustice and inequality. We can no longer afford to build ourselves up by tearing someone else down. We can no longer afford to traffic in lies or fear or hate. It is the poison that we must purge from our politics; the wall that we must tear down before the hour grows too late.
Because if Dr. King could love his jailor; if he could call on the faithful who once sat where you do to forgive those who set dogs and fire hoses upon them, then surely we can look past what divides us in our time, and bind up our wounds, and erase the empathy deficit that exists in our hearts.
But if changing our hearts and minds is the first critical step, we cannot stop there. It is not enough to bemoan the plight of poor children in this country and remain unwilling to push our elected officials to provide the resources to fix our schools. It is not enough to decry the disparities of health care and yet allow the insurance companies and the drug companies to block much-needed reforms. It is not enough for us to abhor the costs of a misguided war, and yet allow ourselves to be driven by a politics of fear that sees the threat of attack as way to scare up votes instead of a call to come together around a common effort.
The Scripture tells us that we are judged not just by word, but by deed. And if we are to truly bring about the unity that is so crucial in this time, we must find it within ourselves to act on what we know; to understand that living up to this country’s ideals and its possibilities will require great effort and resources; sacrifice and stamina.
And that is what is at stake in the great political debate we are having today. The changes that are needed are not just a matter of tinkering at the edges, and they will not come if politicians simply tell us what we want to hear. All of us will be called upon to make some sacrifice. None of us will be exempt from responsibility. We will have to fight to fix our schools, but we will also have to challenge ourselves to be better parents. We will have to confront the biases in our criminal justice system, but we will also have to acknowledge the deep-seated violence that still resides in our own communities and marshal the will to break its grip.
That is how we will bring about the change we seek. That is how Dr. King led this country through the wilderness. He did it with words – words that he spoke not just to the children of slaves, but the children of slave owners. Words that inspired not just black but also white; not just the Christian but the Jew; not just the Southerner but also the Northerner.
He led with words, but he also led with deeds. He also led by example. He led by marching and going to jail and suffering threats and being away from his family. He led by taking a stand against a war, knowing full well that it would diminish his popularity. He led by challenging our economic structures, understanding that it would cause discomfort. Dr. King understood that unity cannot be won on the cheap; that we would have to earn it through great effort and determination.
That is the unity – the hard-earned unity – that we need right now. It is that effort, and that determination, that can transform blind optimism into hope – the hope to imagine, and work for, and fight for what seemed impossible before.
The stories that give me such hope don’t happen in the spotlight. They don’t happen on the presidential stage. They happen in the quiet corners of our lives. They happen in the moments we least expect. Let me give you an example of one of those stories.
There is a young, 23-year-old white woman named Ashley Baia who organizes for our campaign in Florence, South Carolina. She’s been working to organize a mostly African American community since the beginning of this campaign, and the other day she was at a roundtable discussion where everyone went around telling their story and why they were there.
And Ashley said that when she was nine years old, her mother got cancer. And because she had to miss days of work, she was let go and lost her health care. They had to file for bankruptcy, and that’s when Ashley decided that she had to do something to help her mom.
She knew that food was one of their most expensive costs, and so Ashley convinced her mother that what she really liked and really wanted to eat more than anything else was mustard and relish sandwiches. Because that was the cheapest way to eat.
She did this for a year until her mom got better, and she told everyone at the roundtable that the reason she joined our campaign was so that she could help the millions of other children in the country who want and need to help their parents too.
So Ashley finishes her story and then goes around the room and asks everyone else why they’re supporting the campaign. They all have different stories and reasons. Many bring up a specific issue. And finally they come to this elderly black man who’s been sitting there quietly the entire time. And Ashley asks him why he’s there. And he does not bring up a specific issue. He does not say health care or the economy. He does not say education or the war. He does not say that he was there because of Barack Obama. He simply says to everyone in the room, “I am here because of Ashley.”
By itself, that single moment of recognition between that young white girl and that old black man is not enough. It is not enough to give health care to the sick, or jobs to the jobless, or education to our children.
But it is where we begin. It is why the walls in that room began to crack and shake.
And if they can shake in that room, they can shake in Atlanta.
And if they can shake in Atlanta, they can shake in Georgia.
And if they can shake in Georgia, they can shake all across America. And if enough of our voices join together; we can bring those walls tumbling down. The walls of Jericho can finally come tumbling down. That is our hope – but only if we pray together, and work together, and march together.
Brothers and sisters, we cannot walk alone.
In the struggle for peace and justice, we cannot walk alone.
In the struggle for opportunity and equality, we cannot walk alone
In the struggle to heal this nation and repair this world, we cannot walk alone.
So I ask you to walk with me, and march with me, and join your voice with mine, and together we will sing the song that tears down the walls that divide us, and lift up an America that is truly indivisible, with liberty, and justice, for all. May God bless the memory of the great pastor of this church, and may God bless the United States of America.

My Future's so Bright...

What a whirlwind of a day Sun., January 13th was, full of a past so inspiring & promise for a future so bright...I gotta wear shades! So the day started with a fundraising reception for Michelle Obama at The Commerce Club (http://www.thecommerceclub.org/) in downtown Atlanta, and the rest of it was consumed by preparing for, enjoying and recovering from the 2008 Trumpet Awards (http://www.trumpetfoundation.org/).

Having braved mad traffic (generated by gift, monster truck & boat shows, as well as Trumpet Award attendees, wow, is Atlanta a happening city or what???) to get to the Ceremonial Dinner on Sat. night, Sunday seemed like a logistical picnic. My wing girl Kindall agreed at the last minute to accompany me to these glitsy affairs, and as fortune would have it, we both live downtown, she, a stone's throw from the Civic Center (www.atlantaciviccenter.com/events/trumpetawards.htm) in the Renaissance Lofts (http://www.renaissancelofts.com/). This circumstance allowed us to use mostly eco-friendly modes of transportation, i.e., MARTA (http://www.itsmarta.com/) & foot, to get where we needed to go. Wardrobe changes were a breeze & we're told we looked fab, even a few pix snapped on the red carpet @ the Trumpet Awards.

This morning though, I'm in awe of the achievement and opportunities that theses events made real. Michelle's remarks at both the Commerce Club & Civic Center brought cheers from large, enthusiastic, hopeful crowds. These people are ready for an Obama Adminstration! And the accomplishments of the Trumpet Awards honorees served to reinforce Michelle's key message: we are a people capable of ANYTHING to which we set our minds & hearts. Our only barriers lie within ourselves, our own cynicism & self-doubt. Let's exorcise these demons whenever & wherever we find them, and let our lights shine so bright, even cool shades won't do, we'll need the full-on blue blockers! So I ask you now, what are the nature of your aspirations & challenges, and how would you describe your sunglasses?

The John Edwards campaign is headed to Atlanta on Friday afternoon, according to Macon blogger and Edwards supporter Amy Morton. Details to come. His last appearance was at the Depot.

And as predicted, Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama will be in Atlanta on Sunday for the Martin Luther King festivities, his campaign said today.

Details of the Illinois senator’s visit have not been released, but one report on InsiderAdvantage, says Obama will appear at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.

On a different front, it is very sad that the Clinton campaign has decided to attribute ill-advised remarks about Dr. King to the Obama campaign. Sen Clinton is on tape making the remark. Sen. Obama is nowhere in sight - what the heck did he have to do with her blunder. It really is sad to see the old-school dirty tricks people are pulling out of the bag.

The announcement by McKinney ends weeks of speculation that she would announce her candidacy. The firebrand 4th District congresswoman served six terms and was defeated in the primaries in 2006 by Hank Johnson.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Thursday told a cheering Atlanta crowd that he walked away from a U.S. Senate vote to condemn the MoveOn.org newspaper ad that attacked Gen. David Petraeus, declaring the debate was an unnecessary waste of time.

The newspaper ad, published in the New York Times, referred to Petraeus as "General Betray Us." The Senate on Thursday approved the Republican-sponsored resolution, 72 to 25.

"I happen to believe that General Petraeus has served this country honorably. And I think it probably was a distraction to try to attack him as opposed to [President] George Bush's policies," Obama said.

But the Illinois senator said he couldn't tolerate "the notion that at a time when we know young men and women are dying, and veterans are not being served right here at home.... We're wasting time debating about a newspaper ad."

"I did not vote on that bill. This is the kind of game plan that the American people are tired of," Obama said.

The candidate made his comments at a $25-a-head event at the Georgia World Congress Center that organizers said drew 2,200 supporters. A $1,000-per-person, private event followed.

Are You in Favor of a Public Dress Code?

Would I walk around in public letting my underwear be exposed from the tops of my pants? No, not I. Just because I wouldn't choose to dress this way, do I think it should be illegal - heck no! What if someone splits his or her pants at work and the underwear are exposed due to a lack of a change of clothes, should he or she be fined for the clothing splitting because the underwear are showing?

Would I go jogging in public or go to the gym for a workout in a sports bra - most definitely, especially in the Las Vegas heat. Considering my sports bras are 4 times larger than most bikini bathing suit tops, where is the harm in that? Following the logic that sports bras should be illegal in public, it appears the government will move next to ban all bikini swimsuits at public pools and public beaches.

What are your thoughts? Imagine what our government could accomplish if time weren't spent on this type of proposed legislation.

Baggy pants that show boxer shorts or thongs would be illegal under a proposed amendment to Atlanta's indecency laws. The proposed ordinance would also bar women from showing the strap of a thong beneath their pants. They would also be prohibited from wearing jogging bras in public or showing a bra strap.

Blogger Jason Pye pointed us to what could be a decision by former Georgia congresswoman Cynthia McKinney to skip the ‘08 presidential race. She had been flirting with the Green Party.

On Ron Gunzburger’s Politics, McKinney is said to have written a Monday letter to the Greens with these lines:

“After careful consideration about the political conditions facing our nation, the level of development within the [Green] Party, my own readiness to take on such a daunting task and my own long postponed personal priorities, I write to inform the Party that I must at this time withdraw my name from consideration for the Party’s 2008 Presidential Nominating contest.”

The Gunzburger blog notes that this would leave McKinney free to challenge Hank Johnson for her old seat. But we’ve no independent information that this is the case.

I'm sure by now we've all heard about the Jena 6. If not, here's a brief breakdown (according to wiki):

On September 1, 2006, hangman's nooses were discovered in a tree in Jena H.S.'s campus after a black student tried to sit with white students at lunch. The school head recommended that the noose-hangers should be expelled. The board of education overruled him (the school head) and the three white student perpetrators received in-school suspension. On November 30, 2006 an arson fire destroyed the main academic building at the school. On December 4, 2006 a fight broke out on campus, after which six African-American students, later dubbed the Jena 6, were arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder. Law enforcement officers told the Alexandria Daily Town Talk they have found no links between the noose incident, the arson fire, and subsequent fights.

The six accused of attempted second-degree murder are black and were fighting a white student after a week of intimidation by white students, including the one who was assaulted. Intimidation cited includes an incident in which a white student brandished a gun at a convenience store after a verbal exchange. Students allegedly wrestled away the gun and were then held in custody and charged with theft while no charges were made against the white student.

Great late breaking news (according to the AJC):

"Rep. Sanford Bishop, an Albany Democrat, announced Monday that he's backing Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) in the Democratic presidential primary."

"Bishop is the second African American congressman from Georgia to back Obama. Rep. Hank Johnson of Dekalb County endorsed Obama earlier and is already helping him raise money in the Atlanta area, home to a huge share of African American Georgians.

Bishop and Johnson will serve as Obama's state chairmen, Obama's campaign said."

So I'm surfin' the web, and I come across a short piece in the AJC that explains the recent study being done in Snellville to determine if they will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an official city holiday. Interesting, n'est pas?
So far, "the cities that observe the holiday are Auburn, Berkeley Lake, Braselton, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Loganville, Norcross, Sugar Hill and Suwanee."

Barack Obama Rally at Atlanta's GA Tech 14 apr 07

I attended the Rally in ATL at GA Tech's campus as a volunteer. It was probably one of the most inspiring and influential moments in my life. My duty as a volunteer was not a glamorous one; I was assigned to direct traffic to and from parking spaces. Not glamorous, but important none the less. My face along with the dozen or so others that were assigned to "parking lot crew" was the first glimpse of the attendees "Obama Experience". We were the first line of contact for many of the attendees, essentially the first impression. We had to put on the charm and be extra accommodating, especially as the parking spaces became sparse. What was truly amazing was that even though parking became sparse and people were having to park further and further away, that didn't stop them from coming. The weather didn't stop them from coming, it was supposed to storm but it held off until well after the Rally was over. According to the AJC (Atlanta Journal Constitution, for you non-ATLiens) over 20,000 people came. That number tops those of Bush and B. Clinton. I was amazed at the diversity of the crowd. I expected some groups that I saw, but I was pleasantly surprised to see others. I know God was pleased to see so many of his children from so many walks of life gathered together on one accord to hear Mr. Obama speak. The energy in the crowd was amazing; I have only felt that type of energy when I attended hip-hop concerts or my first Falcons game. The groupie in me wants to scream out, "HE SHOOK MY HAND!!!!!" I did intend get to shake hands with the future and 44th President of the United States of America. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of volunteering with the campaign team and look forward to visiting South Carolina with them soon.

Obama - "The RainMaker" in Atlanta

On a Saturday morning when the weather forecast guaranteed rain and severe thunderstorms I grabbed my trusty poncho and headed toward downtown Atlanta for the much anticipated public campaign rally of 2008 Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama. I’d been following the campaign sporadically in the press and on the Internet and was eager both for a live glimpse of Obama and a chance to hear him speak. Upon my arrival I did not need any signs to show me the way. I just followed the throngs of other people marching decidedly up the steep hill leading to the entrance of Georgia Tech’s Yellow Jacket Park. One of the first things I noticed was the diversity of the people around me both in their ages and their ethnicities. We glanced shyly at one another out of the corners of our eyes and probably each had the same question in our minds. Are we all going to the same place?

Indeed we were. As we descended upon the park I felt my first twinge of excitement. The atmosphere was charged and carnival-like with loads of people already gathering on the grass in front of a large stage set up at the edge of the park. To underscore Obama making good on his promise a month earlier to return to Atlanta, Stevie Wonder’s voice blasted over the loudspeakers singing, “here I am…signed, sealed, delivered I’m yours” and I couldn’t help but sing along. After about twenty minutes of expert maneuvering I managed to press my body into a choice spot with an excellent view of the stage. There I waited for the next hour and a half while groups of camera crews filmed the frenzy from their bird-eye view on a separate embankment and menacing storm clouds rolled by overhead. Several times people started up cheering prematurely from mistaken Obama sightings. Disappointed, we reigned in our excitement and continued singing along to the new background music, John Mayer’s catchy and apropos “Waiting On the World to Change”. But finally, just as my left leg started to fall asleep and one lady “thought she felt a raindrop”, the man of the hour arrived.

Living in the city of Atlanta I’ve had the opportunity to see more than a few famous faces. And each time I recall being struck with how different they seemed in person, as if their larger-than-life T.V. personas had somehow been sucked out of their bodies only to be reinserted on the next episode. Not so with Barack Obama. When the senator finally emerged onto the stage I was immediately hypnotized. He looked so much like himself that at first I had to keep blinking my eyes to be sure I was actually seeing him and not some digitally projected image. And then, when he started to speak, his voice was the same smooth, steady boom I’d heard so many times through the speakers on my flat screen. Still, I wondered to myself “Is he really real?”.

Determined to find out I continued to stand for nearly another hour alternately listening, cheering, and yelling out the occasional unsolicited affirmation. I no longer noticed the humidity or my tired legs and feet or the other voices in the crowds around me. Instead I was wholly mesmerized not only by Senator Obama’s commanding presence and energy and the sincere deliverance of his common sense message, but also by the fact that even in an outdoor forum he seemed to take up all the space in the room and had somehow found a way to refract sunlight in his favor. Yes, he was really real.

Also undeniably real were the people from all different races, backgrounds, and ages who came out to support the campaign. I’d like to think of myself as a 360 degree eyewitness because everywhere I turned I literally saw an amazing awareness blooming all around me. Behind me four freshman college students, two White, one Hispanic, and one Middle Eastern, engaged in a spirited debate about the Electoral College and the way in which votes from each state are calculated during elections. On my left a Black mother entertained her two young children, a boy and a girl, during the long wait by playing hangman on the back of a campaign flyer. It turned out that the answer to her puzzle was, “I will vote for Barack Obama”. To my right an older White gentleman struck up a conversation with me about why he supported Obama. He said he had been watching on a small television at work that evening back in 2004 when the senator addressed the nation at the Democratic National Convention.

“I’ve never had anyone grab my attention that way before,” he told me. “I didn’t really know who he was at the time but I knew right away that there was something special about him and I believe he’s what our country needs right now.”

Later we would hold hands as renowned civil rights leader Reverend Joseph Lowry opened the rally with a heartfelt prayer. And then there was me---a thirty-year old Black woman who’s never been very interested in politics attending my first campaign rally ever. In all we were nearly 20,000 people standing in a field waiting for rain, each as thirsty for change as the ground we stood on. And though not a drop of water fell from the sky that afternoon we were all quenched by the words, the presence, the possibility of Barack Obama. This is the phenomena I was compelled to write about here.

After the rally was over, I made the half-mile trek back across the North Avenue Bridge to the garage where I’d parked my car over three hours earlier. On my way out the parking attendant noticed my “Obama in ‘08” t-shirt and her face lit up.

“Are you one of Obama’s people?” she asked. “Because I’d really like to get a sticker for my car”.

“No,” I replied. “I’m just coming from the rally but I can tell you where you can get one.”

Happy that I’d remembered to bring along a stack of my own homemade campaign flyers, I proudly whipped one out of my bag and explained how she go could go onto the official campaign website to learn more. As I pulled out of the garage and pointed my car towards home I felt something swelling inside my chest. I was filled up with a sense of purpose and vision and, yes, hope. Hope. It is a word that has embodied Obama’s message from the theme of his famous convention speech to the title of his best-selling book. Now I truly understood why. And the next time somebody asks me if I’m one of Obama’s people I’ll be sure to respond without any hesitation. Yes, I am!

Obama Is Coming

According to the AJC, Barack Obama is coming to Atlanta.

On March 26, Obama will be holding a fundraiser at a yet-to-be-determined location. The VIP pre-reception is $2,300 a head, while the actual reception is $500 a ticket. I understand the need for funding completely, but here's hoping that the precedent from his campaign so far will prevail, meaning that we'll get some kind of day-time free-for-all rally. Maybe in Piedmont Park? As good a place as any ...

Optimistically, asking for that day off from work might be good planning.
