Thou would’st that I should cast asideGood faith and truth,—my joy and pride,—That I may present good secure,And flee the ills I now endure.Thou would’st persuade me not to dreadThe pains that wait the wicked dead;Thou would’st that men should all despise,—With scorn reject as silly lies,—The earnest words of all who teachA future life, and duty preach.Thy words, I know, are kindly meant, But thou hast failed in thine intent. As wholesome words at first they sound,But proved, are false and noxious found.A show of right they have, but tried,They cannot reason's test abide.Believe me, all the good and wiseThat foolish, wilful, man despise,From virtue's path aside who turns,And all restraints impatient spurns.By conduct only men we know,As pure and noble, vile and low;Their natures we can only test,As acts those natures manifest.Should I the sacred books despise,And act as thou dost now advise,—Would I not all the world deludeBy seeming noble, pure, and good,'While I was vicious, vile, and base,A blot upon the royal race?
If virtues garb assuming, IShould virtue by my deeds deny,Should lead a base and vicious life,With order, law, and right at strife,How could I, leading men astray,By such a course, from wisdom's way, Aught else but condemnation sternFrom righteous men and sages earn?By such a course should I not missBoth present joy, and heavenly bliss? The kings their subjects' weal who seekShould never fail the truth to speak;Whatever promise once they make,Though tempted, they should never break. The good examples rulers giveDirect their people how to live; For common mortals watch the great,And all their doings imitate.A righteous King will rule by truth,And temper, too, his acts with ruth. When truth abides its guiding law,Then kingly sway is free from flaw. Both gods and holy Seers delight,In those who practice truth and right;Though such on earth no bliss attain,The highest future good they gain.
Good faith and truth are virtue's root; From them abundant blessings shoot.Truth rules supreme on earth, and noughtSurpassing truth can e’er be thought. All holy rites, all acts austere,The sacred books which men revere,—Which duty's laws and forms disclose,— These books themselves on truth repose. Why should I then be led astrayMy sire's command to disobey? No fancied good, no dazzling lure,My sense of right shall e’er obscure,Or tempt me under foot to treadMy sacred promise to the dead.
Definition of terrorism: 2) Technique used by Governments to manipulate public opinion in order to further an agenda.
"The truth is, there is no Islamic army or terrorist group called Al Qaida. And any informed intelligence officer knows this. But there is a propaganda campaign to make the public believe in the presence of an identified entity representing the 'devil' only in order to drive the TV watcher to accept a unified international leadership for a war against terrorism. The country behind this propaganda is the US ..." Former British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook They wrote in the old days that it is sweet and fitting to die for one's country. But in modern war, there is nothing sweet nor fitting in your dying. You will die like a dog for no good reason. - Ernest Hemmingway -The pioneers of a warless world are the youth that refuse military service. -Albert Einstein -"Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism." - George Washington -"It is part of the general pattern of misguided policy that our country is now geared to an arms economy which was bred in an artificually induced psychosis of war hysteria and nurtured upon an incessant propaganda of fear." -General Douglas MacArthur, Speech, May 15, 1951 - "War paralyzes your courage and deadens the spirit of true manhood. It degrades and stupefies with the sense that you are not responsible, that 'tis not yours to think and reason why, but to do and die,' like the hundred thousand others doomed like yourself. War means blind obedience, unthinking stupidity, brutish callousness, wanton destruction, and irresponsible murder." - Alexander Berkman -"The aim of military training is not just to prepare men for battle, but to make them long for it." - Louis Simpson - Nothing is more despicable than respect based on fear. - Albert Camus -It is when power is wedded to chronic fear that it becomes formidable.- Eric Hoffer - You see what power is -- holding someone else's fear in your hand and showing it to them!- Amy Tan -One of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the great struggle for independence: - Charles A. Beard - "This so-called ill treatment and torture in detention centers, stories of which were spread everywhere among the people, and later by the prisoners who were freed . were not, as some assumed, inflicted methodically, but were excesses committed by individual prison guards, their deputies, and men who laid violent hands on the detainees." Mrs. Henry Pott writes in "Francis Bacon and His Secret Society, "The organization or method of transmission he (Bacon) established was such as to ensure that never again so long as the world endured, should the lamp of tradition, the light of truth, be darkened or extinguished."In closing a comment from Noel Fermor from Baconiana 1981 "After all, in John Dee we have a man who had a profound influence on Renaissance thought and on the deep laid schemes of Francis Bacon for the betterment of mankind. Dee wrote, "Farewell, diligent reader; in reading these things, invocate the spirit of Eternal Light, speak little, meditate much and judge aright."
I wonder if anyone wonders how God feels? How painful it must be to watch His children fight each other over territory, beliefs, wealth and other material items. If we are all a part of God or a higher power, some energy source which creates and has the capacity of a love we humans cannot comprehend and I believe we are all a part of something much larger than ourselves, I can only imagine the agony He must feel. War, like cancer, is a disease and it seems we do nothing but feed it. We can build machines to destroy each other but we can't seem to help the starving and the truly needy. We spend billions of dollars to send people and objects into space but we cannot seem to take care of the human race. Have we lost the ability to truly communicate with one another? Why are our priorities aimed toward destruction instead of taking care of one another? All this energy wasted on such negative objectives, which have very little chance for positive outcome if we don't do something to save ourselves. Like feeding the hungry, offering free health care and creating a sense of compassion felt throughout the world. Even if the belief system is taken out of the equation, for the atheists and agnostics out there, shouldn't it still be common sense to take care of our own? Would you let your children or even your animals for that matter live in the horrible conditions some humans are subjected to? I know I wouldn't. I would do everything in my power to not only help my own family; I feel it would be second nature to help our neighbors as well. It feels as though we are racing towards something and I'm afraid it's our extinction. As long as we abuse the planet the way we do and let apathy be our guide, we are all one huge train wreck waiting to happen.

Now that the dust has settled from a fascinating campaign, I am reveling in Barack Obama. He is a strong, smart, charismatic leader. He has wasted no time in making fundamental changes in how we relate to each other and the rest of the world. He has inherited a financial problem of nearly unimaginable proportions, yet he has the confidence to lead us out of the morass.
This is Barack's "Perfect Storm." Things couldn't be worse. They can only get better, of their own volition, but under Barack's leadership we can enjoy some optimism about the world we share.
Is there not a very important lesson to learn from the "Virginia Tech Shootout" of the United States when a single person shot dead thirty two inmates before committing suicide? Was that person a naxalite, a fundamentalist or a terrorist i.e., an extremist in any sense of that term? He was just one of those outcasts who were deprived of interactions with the main stream.
It is these outcasts who eventually become the building blocks for extremism of every kind on this earth. As birds of same feather flock together outcasts with typical deprivations come together. They are spotted and picked up by established groups and taken to their training centers. They are well received and made to feel at home by the seniors. They instantly become loyal cadres of these groups. By the time they complete their training they are impregnated with a missionary zeal and passion.
They vow to wipeout the establishment and bring in a system which guarantees an equitable status for all. They are ready to undergo any ordeal to make that change happen. Their own dear life seems insignificant and trivial compared to what they would achieve. Their belief that by dying in a battle against hypocritical rulers they attain martyrdom is unshakable.
The rulers have always been busy with more serious confrontations between themselves. Their budgetary allocations are inevitably increasing by leaps and bounds for defense. Their continued apathy and insensitive approach towards the problems of the deprived is resulting in a steady increase of outcasts year after year. The supply lines of human resource for every kind of extremism are thus getting stronger day by day. There can be no denial of the fact that if the present rate of birth of outcasts is allowed to continue for a few more years extremism would gain the potential to bring about the most disastrous terminal wars on earth.
A diametrically opposite approach and hence a mindset towards the deprived sections has to come about urgently. For this change to be effective and lasting it has to emerge from the very top, And there it is required to have the most passionate heart which is inclusive of every single human being born on this earth. Hence the Heads of Nations, forgetting all their mutual misunderstandings and joining hands, possibly under the auspices of the United Nations Organization, should come forward and examine the new scheme spelled herein which would certainly reverse the trend of extremism.
A few years of implementation of this scheme would see that there are no more deprived sections anywhere, no outcasts are born and that extremism as a culture has just vanished.
Instead, treating them as born enemies and spending enormous resources to fight them with more lethal and destructive weapons will result in heavier losses of innocent lives on one hand and an increasing number of cadres becoming hardcore on the other. There will be a steady increase in the spread, frequency, intensity and sophistication of violent outbursts. The life of common man everywhere will become a nightmare. The citizens will press the governments for more stringent proactive actions against the extremists. The governments would become impatient and revengeful.
The Governments naturally feel that they have an upper hand in their battle against extremists and that they would ultimately win. They would be proved wrong on two counts. The extremists' spirit of self sacrifice and the unpredictability of their operations can never be matched by the conventional armies and their methods. The Governments' expansive forces and access to unlimited resources will be of little use under tricky situations. The entry of highly intelligent minds into extremism is now an accepted reality. The chances that this intelligentsia with the daredevil spirit of the hardcore would one day sneak and penetrate into one of those massive stockpiles of warfare and turn the table cannot be ruled out.
In the end, the extremists turned desperados and the rulers turned bravos will fight the most furious uncontrolled wars ever fought on earth, both sides having free access to all kinds of mass destructive weapons. Mankind would get caught in the crossfire and see its last days. The earth would get scorched beyond recognition.
Extremism is extreme violence due to extreme disgust. It cannot be met with another form of violence. Such blind reactions would only spiral the intensity of violence. The only way is to bring down the disgust by attending to the causes of disgust and to dissolve it with compassion and understanding. Where there is no disgust extremism has no place.
No single person, a group, a nation, an ideology, a religion or a race can be identified as responsible for the chaos in which the world now finds itself. It is all of us, every human being - of course not any other creature - is responsible. More powerful one is more responsibility lies on him. More powerful a nation is more responsibility lies on that nation. Hence there is no doubt that the highest- nay the total- responsibility lies on the shoulders of the Heads of powerful nations. They have failed to lead the rest in the proper direction. Now it is they who have got to take the lead in seeing the world in a new light.
Can man come out of his conditioning and act? Yes, only when he becomes aware of his conditioning. No one can help him to become aware. If he, as he performs his task can constantly observe his feelings with total attention and without any judgements over them he would become aware of his conditioning. The disintegrating thoughts understand and end themselves. Thus all his past falls off. His mind becomes innocent and fresh as just born. He finds love. He does not distinguish between man and man. He sees all as himself - oneself. For him the whole existence is that single self getting presently shattered into pieces due to hatred. With his newly found love he re-establishes peace on this earth.
It is time that the Heads of powerful Nations taking full cognition of their obligations towards the global peace strongly observe, advocate the principle of peaceful co-existence. As the first step they should take the lead and bring all the Heads of Nations without exception for a frank discussion on this scheme.
When the Heads of Nations collectively become aware of their conditioned minds their passionate look at the impending collapse of the mankind would evolve a fresh set of activities bringing an end to the sufferings of the depressed, thus bringing an end to extremism.
Nobody was put on this earth to be a waiter. People were not born to work, yet we have no choice. A human's right to be alive is oppressed by money. Without money to buy those necessary to survival, one would die. We are slaves to the dollar; however, freedom is imminent. My critical theory of proper progression and redirection states that certain technological advancements will liberate us from enslavement and as a result, end poverty, solve the economic crisis, stop global warming, and create world peace. For the purposes of this essay, I take “green” to mean environmentally friendly. Also, I take “technology which generates basic necessities” to mean a device, which will evolve from manufacturing advancing and getting smaller, that uses nanotechnology to create food, water, medicine, material, etc. If we re-landscaped the earth so that every residence, connected by a free green train, was converted into free green skyscraper resorts that provided free access to green technology which generates basic necessities for free, and robots took over the jobs of the working class for free, then money would lose all value and cease to exist. Money would no longer be a need nor would it dictate our lives and we would finally, truly be free: free from doing jobs that we don't want to do and free to pursue our passions, free to spend time with the ones we love, free to travel the world for free, free to learn for free, and free to live for free. In a world without money, there is no poverty. There is no economic crisis. There is no money-related crime. We would see a second renaissance period. The concept of building community would thrive. Exchanging of information over the internet would fluctuate—movies, music, books, lectures on video/audio, and communication would soon all be accessible and spread through the internet; this eliminates the need of physically producing such media and saves natural resources like the trees needed for paper. Innovation and education would continue through schools, universities, and the internet; our focus would be redirected towards research and getting a broader education, rather than a specialized education geared for commercial business. Redirection from our dependence on earth's limited natural resources to using green technology in production, housing, and transportation, will stop global warming. Because society will no longer be dependent on oil to run the very transportation that fuels each nation's economy, war for oil would end. Furthermore, in this technologically advanced society, war over land, money and resources in general would end. Incidentally, the only war that technology cannot solve is war over religion, but that can be solved with an education in the concept of tolerance because it eliminates hate, and the use of marijuana because it causes amotivation. All things considered, when we reach this evolution of society, we will create world peace. With that, I challenge everyone--world leaders, philosophers, scientists, and engineers of all sorts --to take a second to imagine, find flaws in my theory, and build on this outline of a call for action. Together, we can progress towards a brighter tomorrow and make the world a better place.

Election Day on November 4, 2008 will arguably be the most important date in US history and it’s because the world’s fate is in the hands of the next United States President. We've already been punctured with the global economic crisis, so take your pick if you want to further that wound with World War III or preferably repair it with World Peace.
Obama has been such an extremely genuine candidate. I "read" people extremely well as it is a "gift" of many that God gave me of extra sensory perception.
With these "ads" about being a "celebrity"? ALL I CAN picture (I am a freelance photographer) is McCain throwing a "temper tamtrum"...ie; "Sniff-sniff... He is getting ALL the attention! Why am I not getting this type of attention? I am "McCain"! I was on T.V. on a late night show! I was FUNNY TOO! I WASN"T EVEN "THINKING ABOUT EVEN BEING A PRESIDENT!" (so he said....)
I see McCain as a child that will play whatever childish games can be played to get attention. The "celebrity" ad? That is as childish as it gets...
Why is Obama getting a LOT of attention?... It is all because we have had Bush in the White House for 8 years and have seen him almost EVERYDAY on television with the same old stories. McCain is almost like a "fratenal" twin of Bush. There is the answer. Why does anyone even WANT to hear the SAME thing Bush has already done? It is not "news" BECAUSE it is not "NEW".
I genuinely believe that the ONLY people that could even WANT McCain in the White House are the ones who have turned a blind eye to Bush's screw-ups. (hard headed republicans) and way to "proud" to have that "name".)
Anyone who hasn't noticed but it seems that some of "Obama's" ideas on the war in Iraq are NOW being used by the "White House" Gee! Obama IS a great leader!... Bad part is that the "republicans" are wanting to take credit....
I admit, I voted for Bush. BUT, at that time he did seem less "wishy-washy" yet I found that "underneath" it all was an ulterior motive for his OWN personal gain, along with his staff of course.
I HAVE to get this off my chest and I mean nothing disrespectful by my "choice of words"... I am sick and tired of the McCain campaign screaming "race-card". I am white, female. I do NOT see Obama as "black" or "white"... "OREO" is the word. (that was not an insult by any means) A good slang possibly for this situation though. My son is dating a girl who's Dad is Haitian and her mother is from Arkansas. She is a beautiful girl! WHY is McCain always wanting to bring up "RACE" when it should NOT even be mentioned. When it IS mentioned it only brings up the fact that some people will NOT get PAST "racism"... Obama is neither black nor white. He is Obama. A person of sincere integrity and genuine enthusiasm to do whatever is necessary to make this WHOLE world a better place. We are ALL ONE people and we DO need CHANGE.
Obama has parents of a black and white color. Why is Obama referred to as "BLACK"? He is a "person" with great intelligence. The trip overseas? I think it was a GREAT idea given the fact that Obama wanted to be able to say that he "first handedly" experienced other countries. Now? McCain cannot say Obama has no experience in foreign policies. Obama comes across to me that EVERY human being in this world has to be given a "chance". Again.. We ARE all ONE people. Obama put his life at risk just to give these foreigners a "chance" that has NOT been even given by MOST other presidents. I applaud that. Obama may not be able to break some bad habits or ways of life of these foreign countries BUT at least he IS willing to try. How else are we ever going to have the dream of "world peace"?
I know that Obama is very genuine and also that McCain is playing "schoolyard" games but I know Obama will come through. If I were to give "down to earth" advice to Obama? It would be this:
Don't let the old croney get on your nerves. Then he will accomplish what he is set out to do. Since he is acting in a childish nature (he REALLY does need to get psycho-analyzed and checked for dementia... SERIOUSLY! I hope that it can be arranged.) Have the attitude that "sticks and stones will break my bones... but words will never hurt me" type attitude. Not that you ever have or ever will but never lower yourself with political ads to "get back" at him. He already looks foolish. (Brittany and Paris? come on!) YES! Obama IS a celebrity actually and THAT was an extreme compliment! I looked up the words definition: Noun1.celebrity - a widely known person; "he was a baseball celebrity" famous personimmortal - a person (such as an author) of enduring fame; "Shakespeare is one of the immortals"important person, influential person, personage - a person whose actions and opinions strongly influence the course of eventssocial lion, lion - a celebrity who is lionized (much sought after)guiding light, leading light, luminary, notability, notable - a celebrity who is an inspiration to others; "he was host to a large gathering of luminaries"personality - a person of considerable prominence; "she is a Hollywood personality"toast - a celebrity who receives much acclaim and attention; "he was the toast of the town" 2.celebrity - the state or quality of being widely honored and acclaimed fame, renownhonour, laurels, honor - the state of being honored
Gee Obama! I think you should call and "thank" McCain for his "compliment" that actually came out of his childishness.
As far as McCain "experience" in foreign policies? Bless his heart, he HAS been through a LOT but people also have to realize that THAT kind of experience such as being a POW or "tortured" can do only one thing to a person's mind and THAT is to have nothing but "tunnel-vision"... To him? Everyone overseas is NOT to be trusted or even given a "chance"... My brother was in Viet-nam... He has never gotten over it (He is also "mentally warped" and I cannot even be around him!)
Anyway, Keep that chin up Obama! God will look out for us... Dust off the childish ads off your shoulders and continue being a.. well?... A CELEBRITY.....
Thank you for the "hope" you have given us...
Sincerely,
Bonita

Dear Senator Obama: I will send this message to you via your "Contact" form on your website... but am sending it here, too [sent it to info@barackOBAMA.com ] - in order that you generally receive it and to "cc" it to others interested and with whom I've discussed this matter: I listened to your views regarding Israel at the below-cited link. I do understand your wanting to carefully maintain the policy of the USA 'friendship' with Israel, not necessarily mentioning to Israelis the plight of the Palestinians, especially at this time in your political position marching toward the presidency. I thought your responses to the questions were thoughtful, unrushed, even contemplative in nature....contemplative toward PEACE, too, via the more popular "two-state solution". However... ...we who have worked on the Israel-Palestinian situation are questioning if you will eventually acknowledge and mention publicly to Jews/Zionists and Jews/non-Zionists -- and to Israelis everywhere and World members interested -- that Palestinians have rights too. We know that many Israelis and Jews the World over are still in fear from the Holocaust history and the fact that many more million Arabs surround Israel, many of them hostile toward Israel. However, it still stands that Palestinians have rights too and have often been the victim of Israel (as well as Israelis being victim of Palestinians). Will you eventually, at the right time politically, mention this to the Israelis -- that no country is 'perfect' and that the whole situation must be considered, even while Israel is 'our friend'. And, even though Israel is our friend and the US knows that Israel wants to feel and be safe, we must consider in the Peace Process that Palestinians' rights concerning Land and human rights are important--as all Human Rights are important for all races, ethnicities, and nations; and that Palestinians must be more and more assured that their rights count, in tandem with Israeli rights and safety -- all this assured via intelligent, compassionate, and effective negotiations--? AND, that this approach is the BEST for a safe and whole Israel; otherwise, the angers from Palestinians to Israel continue... and between them, continue. Supporting bribey AIPAC-right-or-wrong has actually HURT Israel. It is hoped that our Congress, under your presidency, can free itself from the stranglehold of AIPAC's lobbby; and that our Congress can think freely, intelligently, and with a true Peace motive, without fear of AIPAC and others...in its decisionmaking. These resources you may already know: Please see www.Tikkun.org -- run by Rabbi Michael Lerner regarding this fairness approach and his inspired version of former VP Al Gore's "Global Marshall Plan". Also see info about the relatively new Israeli-Palestinian Confederation founded by Josef Avesar - which seeks Peace via an added legal / governmental approach of confederate oversight!--: www.aboutIPC.org . --------- I understand that Hamas has offered a "HUDNA"--a cease-fire of ten years in order to negotiate a peace--and realize same--with Israel; but that Israel has not responded to this, nor shown a willingness to negotiate with Palestinians. Hamas offering such is, in itself, a recognition of Israel... even if Hamas thinks that Israel "should not be on the map" historically speaking. http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=RNWE,RNWE:2006-03,RNWE:en&q=HUDNA+offered+by+Hamas+to+Israel Perhaps the legitimacy of this hudna peace offer should be investigated, tested... Of course "beware of Greeks [or anybody] bearing gifts"! However, if this was offered by Hamas, and it can be deemed that it was offered "in good faith", what are Israel's reasons for supposedly ignoring such? It never hurts to at least talk -- even with those whose "offers" might be suspect (in which case that in itself can be talked about in a negotionary meeting!) (Israel totally ignoring such offer sounds like the Bush administration saying, "do as I say" or I won't negotiate with you -- which is a Catch 22 of course!--and then makes it "convenient" to cry "foul" and cheneybush types can get ready for yet another imperialistic, blindly arrogant war. It is, of course, UNFAIR! And it is dangerous.) Impure motives always cause problems... I would hope that you truly are, as you say, willing to "negotiate" with any adversarial situation--wisely at the right time and under appropriate circumstances; instead of provoking hatred (so that the US can "invade" and keep its military "active" for imperialistic gain or whatever); and instead of bullying any given country (such being truly undemocratic, just as the process of relating to another person via bullying is not democratic). I HOPE for the highest standards from you, at least the standards which help promote the highest good: world Peace being the bottom line, the highest practicality. (And, then we as a World can get down to better brass tacks solving the Global Warming and Planet-in-[im]Balance problem.) ======== I hope that you, in your heart, hold PEACE as the bottom line and the highest standard re all foreign policy, and re Israel-Palestinians in particular; rather than merely supporting a "US-Israeli friendship" for personal gain, etc.. And I hope that the flaws of Israeli foreign policy are just as scrutinized as those of Palestinians'. Otherwise, Palestinian anger will continue and is understandable, even if terrorism isn't 'justified'; and terrorism will continue (which of course bushcheney don't mind in that "then" they/Israel can justify invading in that region and others related--which of course is diabolical provocation of the most dastardly!). Indeed, under conditions of the continued policies re Israel-Palestinians, I believe you/we will NEVER get PEACE in that Region. It's time for a NEW APPROACH to this and many foreign policy problems...as you have mentioned. America has caused much of the resentment, hatred toward itself, and has even caused much of the terrorism in the World via UNFAIR FOREIGN POLICIES which seek only personal gain or "personal interests" at the expense of peace and other values...and by meddling where meddling is not due; and via other subsequent actions as a result of such policies. Thank you for your anticipatec consideration... In defense of fairness--not just "Israel-right-or-wrong", julieanna thompsonactivist et al.marina del rey, cau.s.a.citizens for global solutions, et al. ========================= Tony Wicher

Dear Sen. OBAMA:
This is what the Dems are up against in this coming Election. IRAQ has to be explained as a blunder, NOT A DEFEAT -- because leaving Iraq DOES NOT MEAN DEFEAT! It means we did a job there: Saddam and his sons are gone. The Iraqi People convicted; the American military killed the sons in a "shoot out". And we have stayed and stayed and stayed and fought these creepy terrorists who have infiltrated there but who weren't there before we invaded. So, by our being "there" / using another country, we are keeping our country "safe"? Wow is that creepy and sleazy and MEAN. And not necessarily accurate, certainly.
Plus doing oil deals while there and building a mammoth, vulgur u.s. embassy there?
there's a lot that WeThePeople don't know, of course; but there is evidence of LIES and KILLING and LOSIING BILLIONS and USING BILLIONS--------
hey, that in itself is a DEFEAT. The LIES of this administration is DEFEAT. Let's RETREAT FROM DEFEAT and get out NOW! That is the victorious thing to do!! Carefully and systematically bring the Troops home.
Sen. OBAMA: SPEAK, with your good skills of communicating and of oratory, SPEAK to these protestors against anti-war protestors:
PLEASE READ AND CONSIDER CAREFULLY FOR YOUR CAMPAIGN, as you are in earnest:

The article below originally appeared on Barack Obama’s website as “Friends Waiting to Be Made in an Alliance of Civilizations” on January 22, 2008. I am re-publishing it now especially to share it with my compatriots in Spain, such as those in “Obama Supporters in Spain”, a group of friends of Barack’s which I joined today, 1st February 2008.
As this re-release of “Friends Waiting to Be Made in an Alliance of Civilizations” is aimed at readers who may be more familiar with Spanish politics, I should also provide the caveat beforehand that I have serious reservations about the Zapatero Government’s apparent willingness to negotiate with groups which use violence and vandalism in an attempt to achieve their objectives and its fuelling the flames of independence-seeking movements within Spain, a country I love almost as much as my own. Furthermore, I question the warm relations Zapatero’s Spain has sought with regimes like Castro’s Cuba and Chavez’s Venezuela, relations which are already bearing bitter fruit for Spain. However, I strongly support the Alliance of Civilizations as an initiative to promote peaceful relations between countries and peoples. I encourage US policy-makers like Barack Obama and those Israeli policy-makers inclined towards peaceful relations with their Palestinian neighbors to engage in the Alliance and other initiatives which aspire to create a more peaceful world.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The American foreign policy I have known and loved is one in which war is a last resort. Sadly, in recent years, a very different policy has emerged in the current culture of fear propagated by America’s own leaders. Regarding one of the conflicts in which the US is currently mired in particular, Barack Obama says, “…the war in Iraq should never have been authorized, and it should never have been waged.” (1) With the truth better known about the Bush Administration’s real motives for the invasion of Iraq as opposed to what the public and even high-ranking officials in the Administration were told in the build-up to the war, it is now even more clear that precious US credibility was lost precisely at a time when it was most needed.
Barack Obama offers a fresh change of course for innovative leadership to restore America’s standing in the world and enable the US to once again be the protagonist for peace in the Middle East it has been when peace in this region was at least in sight, if not in reach. As an American residing in Spain, the Alliance of Civilizations (AoC), a United Nations initiative underway since 2004, sounds as tailor-made for Barack Obama as those trendy gray suits he wears. US participation in the Alliance or in some other similar peace initiative, led by an Obama Administration, could result in peace and understanding winning out over war and extremism.
Spain has had many centuries of experience with Muslim countries and peoples. Its record is most certainly a mixed one of being a bridge between Europe and Africa for finding common ground, but more often, of confrontation led by religious zealotry on both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar. From its history and geographic position on the planet, Spain is a place where Christians, Jews and Muslims have, in its better moments, lived together in harmony, and in its worst, clashed in confrontation. However, in today’s tumultuous world, Spain would seem to have learned from its own experience.
Spain’s version of 9/11 was 3/11, that tragic day in March, 2004 when 192 innocent lives were taken by terrorist bombers on early-morning commuter trains in Madrid. Instead of lurching to the right and pursuing a policy of war in a culture of fear as might have been expected, the Spanish people rose up and swept a progressive new president, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, into power. He has taken a markedly different approach to addressing the fundamental issues dividing people in our world.
On September 21, 2004, Zapatero presented a proposal for an Alliance of Civilizations at the 59th General Assembly of the United Nations. According to the Mission Statement for this innovative organization, “The Alliance of Civilizations (AoC) aims to improve understanding and cooperative relations among nations and peoples across cultures and religions and, in the process, to help counter the forces that fuel polarization and extremism.” (2)
The Alliance of Civilizations fits hand-in-glove with Barack Obama’s goals to fundamentally change the approach of American foreign policy. At a speech to the Chicago Council on Global Affairs in April, 2007, Obama stated, “In today's globalized world, the security of the American people is inextricably linked to the security of all people.” In the same speech, he provides five ways in considerable detail “…to let the world know that we are committed to our common security, invested in our common humanity, and still a beacon of freedom and justice for the world.” One of these five measures in summary is “…to invest in our common humanity - to ensure that those who live in fear and want today can live with dignity and opportunity tomorrow.” (3)
This approach represents the America which in its best moments has been a proactive positive force for international relations based on peace and shared prosperity for all peoples. The Alliance of Civilizations has already been putting machinery in place to constructively work towards the goals and vision presented by Barack Obama. Notably-absent US and Israeli membership and participation in the Alliance are crucial if its good intentions are to be converted into potentially dramatic progress towards a common security rooted in our common humanity. US leadership and dialogue between warring nations is essential if there is to be peace in the Middle East. Sadly, the absence of that US proactive and positive intervention in recent years has created a void in which extremist elements have won out over more moderate ones and conflict has spread like a wildfire in that critical region.
Nobel-Peace-Prize-winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu says, “An enemy is a friend waiting to be made.” (4) Barack Obama understands that talking to so-called or even self-proclaimed enemies is essential if there is going to be any chance for peaceful resolution of conflicts. Some individual representatives of nations may speak of other nations being sworn enemies and of wiping them off the map (often for domestic political consumption), but without US dialogue to “give peace a chance”, those flames are only fanned further and there is little if any chance for cooler heads to prevail.
In addition to concrete on-the-ground steps for fostering understanding and cooperative relations among nations, such as those taken at the Alliance of Civilizations Forum in Madrid on January 15-16, 2008 (5), the AoC provides a setting in which constructive dialogue can take place. However, US involvement to bring all parties to the table and US pressure on all sides to bring them to agreement will be needed to settle long-running disputes.
I wonder what has happened to US leadership as a problem solver. Barack Obama’s insight gives me hope that the US will once again take its place as a confident leader to make real progress on issues like world development and world peace, two issues which both Obama and the Alliance of Civilizations program recognize as intimately related. A strong US role is needed in the AoC or some other similar initiative which can offer some hope for Middle East peace. Barack Obama offers the vision we need to lead again and for peaceful resolution of conflicts in the world to be paramount to US foreign policy.
