LDS Church encourages member involvement in political process

While the LDS Church has long affirmed its political neutrality regarding political parties, platforms and candidates, it is reminding its members of their duty to vote and of the church's right to speak out on political and social issues.
In a letter sent to priesthood leaders dated Sept. 11 to be read from the pulpit in LDS congregations nationwide on Sunday, the church's First Presidency titled its message "Political participation, voting and the political neutrality of the Church."
Church leaders each year read a statement of political neutrality from the pulpit and encourage members to get involved in the political process, but this year's letter differed from previous years in the urgency with which it encourages individual political participation.
"As citizens, we have the privilege and duty of electing office holders and influencing public policy. Participation in the political process affects our communities and nation today and in the future," the letter reads.
"Latter-day Saints as citizens are to seek out and then uphold leaders who will act with integrity and are wise, good, and honest. Principles compatible with the gospel may be found in various political parties."
"Therefore, in this election year, we urge you to register to vote, to study the issues and candidates carefully and prayerfully, and then to vote for and actively support those you believe will most nearly carry out your ideas of good government," the letter said.
As in the past, the letter affirms the church's "neutrality regarding political parties, platforms, and candidates. The Church also affirms its constitutional right of expression on political and social issues."
In June, the First Presidency sent a letter to church leaders in California — also to be read from the pulpit — asking church members to "do all you can" to uphold traditional marriage. The move came following a ruling earlier this year by the California Supreme Court that overturned a previous referendum outlawing gay marriage.
Voters there will decide in November whether to approve the proposed amendment, and opponents have grown increasingly vocal in their criticism of the church's stance and the political involvement of its members.

Ok, at last I've got a couple of minutes to rub together, so I'll make my introduction.
I am Bryan Belrad (obviously), and I'm best known (at present) for hosting Belrad Universe, the fastest-growing talk show in America today, and the number 1 show on the Internet. I've also garnerd quite a bit of notoriety as a maverick physicist - my best-selling book "Testing the Big Bang" debunked the broken Big Bang Theory in 2007.
I'm still active in the field of physics - I recently published a paper that disproves Graviton Theory, for example. But let's not focus on the negative :) I also developed a rather unique idea on why gravity works (the 'how' is already pretty well covered).
My favorite thing in the world is to write. I love to spread ideas, share information, and otherwise improve the general quality level of the world through written communication. I do enjoy my talk show (shows, now - see BelradUniverse.com for info on that), but, I've found, written words often reach a far greater audience than spoken ones.
After all, how many people have read the story of Moses, versus those who have heard it from his own lips?
So, a good deal of my energy also goes into fiction, where I can spread my viral philosophies of honor, responsibility, and compassion - things which don't fit well into science texts. To that end, last year I also published a fantasy novel, "Rage of Night", which is doing exceedingly well.
Anybody can feel free to check up on both books - they're available pretty much everywhere.
There's a lot of other things I do, too. I'm a minister of the Universal Life Church, and I write other articles for a variety of publications, covering a vast range of topics. Many of my articles, such as the "News in Brief" brand, are syndicated, but I try to keep everything linked up through BelradUniverse.com, so that it's easy for anybody to find anything.
Besides all of that, I'm also a life-long student, currently attending the University of Phoenix - the very best of all the institutions that can meet my hectic schedule, and I teach a bit on the side (privately, not for a University).
I've already got ph.d's in theoretical physics (hence the first book), metaphysics (religion & philosophy), and a few honorary ones that I sometimes forget about. I also hold an MBA and a small horde of BA's, BS's, and AS's, which I stopped counting when they covered an entire wall in my home. Yet, I just keep going after more.
But most important of all, I'm a father of three of the sweetest children in the world. Believe it or not, even with all this other stuff going on, I spend the majority of my time caring for them. As it should be.
So, that's pretty much me in summary. As you can see, I'm one busy boy - and what's listed here isn't the half of all the things I'm up to; this is just the starter-kit for the get-to-know-me program of study.
However, that IS all the time I have at the moment. The children are calling, so, until next, I bid you all a fond farewell.
