We have just had another of those strange flight travel incidents, which nobody seems to be able to explain or resolve in any way. It seems that a Continental plane pulled into Rochester, Minnesota because of bad weather, then sat on the tarmac, about fifty feet from a gate, for twelve hours. Everyone involved has diligently and rationally absolved themselves of fault in this situation. Again. The passengers suffered pretty badly, with just one bathroom. That bathroom was clogged up and inoperable. No food and no drinks were served by the one flight attendant, while all this went on. The Airport says that the terminal was open and available, but the crew of the aircraft would have had to request clearance to dock. The Airline says it knows nothing at all about any of what went on. The crew of the plane says that the terminal was closed and they had no place to dock. That someone's lying here is being totally ignored.
But it is vitally interesting to listen to interviews of the passengers after they were finally deplaned. The succession of lies that they were told by the crew of that plane is unbelievable. It is almost of daytime soap opera caliber stuff. They were told that the terminal was closed. They were told, time after time, that they would be flying out very soon, until they started to be told that a bus was coming to take them back to Minneapolis (60 miles away). Then they were told that the bus had broken down. They were served nothing by the lone flight attendant, but a pack of self-serving lies. There was no bus. There was no flight clearance. The crew never contacted the terminal to ask for docking privileges. There could be only one motivation for all the lying and misrepresentations. Money. Why else would anyone perform like that crew performed?
Flight crews start getting paid as soon as they pull away from the gate. That crew was well into overtime pay while that plane sat there on the tarmac. Not only that, but the crew was using up hours of 'air' time which would give them time off in the weeks ahead, because of the way flight rules are structured within the industry. The passengers were 'gamed' by that crew. The media allows this to continue by not letting the public know about the true motivation behind this kind of miserable flight violation.
And you might think that the passengers kind of deserved what they got because they did not get violent or complain to the point of intolerance? Think again. Post 9/11. Yes, think TSA. Think about the expressions you yourself observe on many of the near-moronic faces of airport security 'officers.' You cannot, as a passenger, encounter flight personnel, or security personnel, with an 'attitude' anymore. You will be charged with a felony, and our ridiculously skewed court system will find you guilty. It happens more than three thousand times a year in this country. The passengers had to do what they did. They had to stay quiet and take the lies. They probably even knew that they were being lied to. And there is the cell phone issue I heard brought up this morning. Once you pull away from the gate you are not allowed to use your cell phone on the aircraft. Only the crew could give you permission to do that, and guess what. Yes, you guessed it. The crew said no cell phones.
The crew will not be fired or punished for their behavior. Anymore than Officer Crowley will be punished for his illegal harassment, humiliation and arrest of Professor Gates. In fact, they will all be rewarded. The flight crew will get the off time and overtime pay, while Crowley will get promoted and have some badly written book published. Some injustices that occur in our culture are actually rewarded. I am not sure why, exactly. Maybe it is just that Jupiter is in transit, or Venus is trining Mars. But, if the airlines do not stop supporting outrageous behavior committed by their flight crews, there will be an occurance of violence at some point. One of these days, or nights, an overheated and fully stuffed aluminum tube is going to explode like a bratwurst left too long on the grill. That coming event is so easily preventable, but, sadly, I don't think anything will be done. Our whole culture is sitting on the dock of the bay, watching .....

KAAL reports on yesterday's National Security Town Hall in Rochester:
(ABC 6 News) - Polls are showing a tight margin between Barack Obama and John McCain. As we get closer to Election Day we can expect to see more local politicians rallying for their presidential candidate. In the first town hall meeting for Senator Barack Obama in Rochester, national security experts took the stage stumping for the democratic hopeful. They unveiled Obama's foreign policy vision for national security. It includes withdrawing troops from Iraq within 16 months and refocusing the fight towards Al Qaeda and the Taliban."Focus on the people who actually perpetrated 9-11 on us that's taking this to Afghanistan and making sure Pakistan is brought into this," Tim Walz. Republicans in our area stumping for John McCain were quick to respond to the proposal. In a phone interview Minnesota Republican Chair Ron Carey criticizes Obama's plan."On Iraq, Barack Obama says he wants peace, but if he continues to oppose the strategy that has lead to a tremendous reduction of violence, his calls for unconditional withdrawal could result in a renewed violence," said Carey.Democratic Congressman Tim Walz disagrees."The currently policy under President Bush supported by Senator McCain has been solely focused on Iraq, that had nothing to do with 9-11, and had used our resources, our troops to the point where it's very difficult to focus on the greater need," said Walz.

This morning's Rochester Post-Bulletin includes this story about a 75-year-old Caledonia woman who is fired up about Barack's candidacy:
Back in the day, Julia Massman knew them all. She had shaken their hands and heard them speak at state conventions -- political leaders like Wendy Anderson and Rudy Perpich and Hubert Humphrey. Then the Caledonia woman fell away from active involvement in the DFL Party and stayed away for years. Then she began to feel her political soul stirred again.Though she had never been a national delegate or even tried to be, Massman campaigned actively at the DFL district convention in Albert Lea to be a national delegate. She won it on the basis of a speech she delivered at the district convention that included this simple declaration:"I'm a 75-year-old, Irish, Catholic white woman, and I'm supporting Barack Obama," Massman recalled.Massman knew there was political potency in the statement. It directly refuted the conventional wisdom at the time that older, white women, particularly supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, never would support Obama's candidacy. At age 75, Massman -- a former dairy farmer, mother of 13 and grandmother of 27 -- will be attending her first national convention as the state's oldest national delegate when the Democratic National Convention kicks off Monday in Denver.Massman makes no secret of what it was that re-ignited her passion for politics. The moment for her came during Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. Massman instantly was converted.Massman calls Obama intellectual and thoughtful, someone who has grown up in different places and countries and knows what it's like to live in those environments."He represents the perfect American. I'm Irish-Dutch. He's Irish, Scotch and Kenyan, and most Americans are more than one nationality. We are a melting pot, after all," she said.DFL leaders say the DFL delegation will be one of the most diverse ever. It will include 25 African-Americans, six American Indians, 10 Asian-Pacific Islanders and seven Latinos. Its youngest will be 17-year-old David Gilbert-Pederson of Minneapolis. Its second youngest will be 18-year-old Sam Hagedorn, a native of Rochester and a graduate of Mayo High School.John Stiles, the state DFL Party's communications director, said the DFL delegation will almost certainly be more reflective of the state's diversity than the GOP delegation, which he said will be almost "entirely white," older and mostly Christian, "with no people of different religious beliefs in it."

Today's Rochester Post-Bulletin included an article about Joe Book, a retired firefighter and Campaign for Change volunteer.
Obama volunteer likes message of changeBy Matthew Stolle Post-Bulletin, Rochester MNJoe Book was performing an act of political penance last week. He was door-knocking in northwest Rochester, seeking to drum up support for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama's run for the presidency. Book, a 28-year retired veteran of the Rochester Fire Department, doesn't particularly enjoy door-knocking. In fact, he hates the activity. "I got a hundred better things to do than this," Book said, pausing on a sidewalk, clipboard in hand. Yet Book, 52, cites two overriding factors for his willingness to involve himself in the Obama campaign as an unpaid volunteer. The first is Book's regret for voting for George W. Bush in the 2000 election, a decision he admits was largely driven by his disgust with President Clinton's scandal-plagued, boorish behavior in the White House and then-Democratic presidential contender Al Gore's failure to repudiate it. The second reason is his belief that Obama represents the best chance for steering the United States in a new direction. The change message that has been at the core of the Obama camp has resonated powerfully with the former firefighter. When it comes to his political views, Book is something of an open book. Even as he goes door-to-door, Book maintains a steady conversational pace. He wants a new direction in foreign policy, with a greater focus on Afghanistan. He is enthused about Obama's plans for expanding health care insurance to more Americans. But the subject that really gets Book's juices flowing is energy issues. The debate over man-made global warming may rage in some circles, but Book is convinced that the phenomenon must be dealt with as a reality. The United States, he says, can no longer afford a delay in embracing a new energy future, based on wind and solar power, electric cars and a lighter carbon footprint. The Republican mantra of drill, drill, drill is fool's gold in Book's mind. "I got five grandchildren," Book says. "This is a last chance, if we don't do this now." Although Book's personal prognosis can come across as grim, his personality is upbeat and optimistic. For a person who can at times speak apocalyptically about America's future, Book has enough faith in the future that he's building a new house, one based on new green technology. He is also convinced of one man's ability to make a difference. Hence his door-knocking activity one Sunday morning. At one door in a northwest Rochester home, Book is greeted by a woman clad in a nightgown. She tells Book she was planning to take a shower, yet she holds the door open and agrees to answer Book's questions. By early afternoon, Book was feeling upbeat about the responses he was getting from his door-knocking. The economy and the war in Iraq were among the top issues for some. The majority of respondents had expressed an openness, if not an intention, to vote for Obama, he said. "No one has slammed the door in my face yet. That's kind of nice," Book said.
Today's Rochester Press-Bulletin included an article about this past Saturday's office opening there.
Sen. Barack Obama opened a presidential campaign office in Rochester over the weekend as the Obama campaign readies its ground game for the November election. The opening of Obama's Campaign for Change office, located at 401 16th St. N.W., Suite 105, took place on Saturday at an event headlined by Democratic Congressman Tim Walz. "The office will be used as a sort of regional headquarters for the campaign to organize our neighbor-to-neighbor efforts," said Nick Kimball, a spokesman for the Obama campaign In Minnesota. The office is one of nine that the Obama campaign has opened across Minnesota.

First off, We need to win the presidency.
It may actually be hard to lose it, but as the National Democratic party has shown, even historically if you go back 40 years, is that it is inept at actually presenting the principles and platform of the democratic populus. Us.
Even Clinton (William Jefferson) won his presidency in spite of, rather then because of, his democratic ideals. Fact is he won because he was Bill.
Clinton magaged to drop George 1 and we were so tickled that we dropped the ball in the very next mid-term (94) and let that ’Contract with America’ knock our donkey on his ass, neck deep in elephant dung.
So we need to open fire on the Republican party. Come at them hard and fast, and try to hurt them nationally in all the places we can. Target both weak congressional positions as well has some of the rampant neocons. Settling if we must in merely seating a more malleable new Republican rather then seeing the incumbent keep and strengthen their seat.
Now, the Republicans will try very hard to separate themselves from Mad King George and his administrations directives. But, we cannot fail to take advantage of this. We must Focus on showing McCain and other Republicans as just that, Republicans.
We MUST destroy the already badly damaged meme, the cultural perception at what the ’right’ stands to represent.
Or at least rebrand it so that the general population sees them for what it actually is. See. Most people think the republican party still represents smaller government, States rights, fiscal conservation, non-intervention policys and focusing on America first.
But the ’neocons’ are about corporate interest, Military Industrial manipulation and sales, and the malignant growth of the separation of wealth.
And those wealthy who play their game are sadly socking away the profits of America’s blood, sweat, and tears in offshore banking institutions, further isolating that capital OUT of America.
Offer up Democracy for America.
Democrats for a Democratic America.
Start running commercials that show our recent history.
Focus on specific events such as Enron, the handling of the ongoing catastrophe that was Katrina and is New Orleans , The crumbling infrastructure of our nation, our economy, our military, our housing industry, hell you have not been able to walk the streets of our nations Capitol without feeling damaged since Nixon insinuated his stench into the Repugnican gestalt. Sadly there isso much to draw from.
Perhaps 15 second spots building factual timelines of how badly these events impacted our nation.
Build references in the american consciousness and be able to trigger them as we get closer to the election in heavily loaded commercials, consolidating all these loaded references and tying it to the republican persona.
End these with a simple message for change., Don’t say ’change’, Just use suggestive statements such as
’Time to vote Democratic’ and put Democracy back in charge’,
or
’Please, this time support your Democratic party and support Democracy for America.
The Media will gladly clarion the ’Change’ moniker for us.
You know, During the entire 04 election I never once saw truely harsh commericals against Bush. And I’m not talking about dirty advertisement, I’m talking about telling the truth.
And the truth is that Bush was easy to beat, he handed out ammunition against continuing his policys left and right. We just ignored his administrations faux’pas (sp?) and floated a mortician who acted like he belonged on the table instead of working on it.
So this time let us take of the gloves and reveal steel, Lay waste.
Damage the Republican image so badly that they either completly rebuild the party or suffer the loss of power for a dozen election cycles, or until we drop the ball again.
It may sound kind of hard line, but the reality is that for the bulk of Americans, it will not be hard on them at all, they will experience the immediate removal of a chain or two, then more and more of them as we clear up this mess.
And believe me this is a mess, a very large mess all mixed up into a swamp.
And that means that we, the American people need to do more then just go vote every couple of years (though it seems that not nearly enough Americans will commit to even that little.), we need to
step up.
Wherever we can make a difference that we can be proud of.
Step up.
Wherever we can, help another understand just why you are stepping up, so that they might also stand.
Step Up
Maybe even help two or three people that we can know just how much we can do if we just
STEP UP.
Make it Viral.
Please.
Up
The momentum is building in the Empire State as we run up to our primary on Super Tuesday. Yesterday, our grassroots supporters in Western New York staged a simultaneous rally in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse which drew hundreds of attendees, netted some local endorsements and capitalized on the energy of the room by handing out literature and encouraging them to take to the streets of their neighborhood.
Approximately 500 people rallied in the Rochester headquarters yesterday, easily dwarfing meetings for other candidates in The Flower City. As we have seen across the country, the crowd was a mixture of young and old, rich and poor, Democratic stalwarts to people inspired by Barack's message of change to get involved in the first campaign of their lives.
Fired up and ready to go!
Our presidential endorsement - Barack Obama By Mary Anna Towler on Jan. 22nd, 2008 ... Read in-depth articles about him, and study his issues papers, and you find plenty of substance. You may not agree with his proposals (and many of them differ little from Clinton's and Edwards'), but the charge of "no substance" is simply wrong. He wants to reduce Americans' dependence on foreign oil and address climate change. He supports raising fuel-efficiency standards. He supports a cap-and-trade system in which polluters will have to pay for emissions, "rather than giving these emission rights away to coal and oil companies." He would use some of the revenue to invest in clean energy, in research and development, and in helping workers affected by the transition to a new kind of economy. He wants the US to rejoin international efforts to combat climate change and wants to create an international global energy forum of the world's largest energy-consuming nations. ... The nation needs fresh ideas, fresh approaches, fresh blood: change. Barack Obama best represents it, and he offers the best hope for it.
Wow did this take a long time to get posted, but I'm a newbie in video editing, and have no guidance. Nearly everybody on the video is new since the Iowa caucus. Enjoy.

Despite the bitter cold, Barack supporters throughout New York State braved the elements to show their support, passion and organization. Keeping an eye on the incoming results from the Nevada Causes, where Barack walked away with the most delegates for the nomination, our New York hope mongers made phone calls, answered questions and signed up new volunteers throughout the day.

To show support for Barack on the day of the Nevada Caucus, over 200 volunteers from the area crowded Venu-Restro Lounge & Nightclub on St. Paul’s Street in Rochester, NY.
Margaret, who only began working with RochesterDems for Obama in the past week, enthusiastically reported, “In forty-four years of working in campaigns from local to national, I have never seen this kind of passion mixed with focus and organization… The closest I can remember was in 1968, when I worked as a volunteer coordinator for Bobby Kennedy -- that's the closest thing I can remember.”
Rochester natives cheer Barack’s biographical video.
These supporters from the Metropolitan area came from all walks of life, young and old, filled with hope and ready to work for our grassroots movement for change. They watched Barack’s biographical video, cheered him on as the results came in from Nevada, and signed up for commitments for the days leading up to the New York State Primary on Feb. 5. The organizers of RochesterDems for Obama fired up the crowd by reviewing how far we’d come and what is still possible if we stand up for Barack throughout the Empire State.
The event received heavy press coverage on local stations and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
Margaret summed up the feeling of hope and possibility emanating from the rally: “What I have experienced in one short week of working with RochDems for Obama is that there is such unity of purpose because there is unity of pride in our candidate that if ANYONE can do it -- we can!”
I am glued to the results in New Hampshire, and not trying to get overly confident (when all the signs are there as in IOWA) that Obama got his message out~again!
I am proud of Barack for keeping his cool, and staying on message, while under attack from his competition (which is totally acceptable~it's a campaign) and also under attack from a group who came to heckle him last night at his Rochester rally (it was on CSpan, and oh my gosh, AM I ADDICTED OR WHAT!!!!) At his rally, a group of pro lifers chanted and heckled and Barack said "I'll meet with you after", and then while they were escorted out of the building he said something like "You have to give them credit for organizing and getting their voices heard". He also stopped the crowd from booing them. He put his words into actions at that critical point to see how he held up under real pressure. I love him even more because it doesn't matter if we differ on any certain issues, but he treated everyone with respect and that says more about him than any words!
I am invested in what New Hampshire will do tonight, and by all indications, it's another win for all of us and for the US!
Ba ROCK THE VOTE!!
so we attempted to make it to the _5:30_ doors at the opera house in Rochester.... yeah us along with 500+ others it appears. I was a bit disappointed. We ended up back at the house, watching Obama speak to the packed opera house on cspan. I don't think I've seen that many ppl in the opera house ever. It raised my spirits a little knowing that people were there to at least hear what had to be said.
Something that really has struck me with all the mud that has been thrown from a certain camp is the way that the Obama camp has only responded, but not thrown mud back. Granted that there is a lot of mud out there... I mean whitewater alone conjurs up enough.
We'll see how tomorrow goes in ye old NH.
You can tell that voting will start in less than 12 hours from the crowds and the energy. The Opera House in Rochester is packed, with voters straining to get a view of Barack.
A packed balcony.
With Barack’s momentum building, the hunt is on for remaining undecided voters.
